All aromatic plants emit volatile substances into the environment either during their life or during the decomposition process. During decomposition, these volatile constituents affect the top soil microflora and the nutrients recycle process. Lavandula stoechas is a perennial aromatic shrub, rich in aromatic substances which can be found abundant across the Mediterranean. The aim of the present study was to investigate the essential oil degradation during decomposition process of L. stoechas and how the essential oil major compounds are released during this process. Fresh leaves and flowers of lavender were used for this study using the litter bag technique. The essential oil content of the initial plant was 1.46% dw and after seventeen months period dropped at 0.06%. There were no differences in oil degradation among the different experimental sites. Most of the essential oil compounds had disappeared after a year. However, the most toxic compounds in the plant material still remained after seventeen months.  相似文献

A critical question among the researchers working on fungal lipid biology is whether the use of an enriched growth medium can affect the lipid composition of a cell and, therefore, contribute to the observed phenotypes. One presumption is that enriched medias, such as YPD (yeast extract, peptone and dextrose), are likely to contain lipids, which may homogenize with the yeast lipids and play a role in masking the actual differences in the observed phenotypes or lead to an altered phenotype altogether. To address this issue, we compared the lipids of Candida albicans, our fungus of interest, grown in YPD or in a defined media such as YNB (yeast nitrogen base). Mass spectrometry-based lipid analyses showed differences in the levels of phospholipids, including phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylglycerol, lyso-phospholipids; sphingolipids, such as mannosyldiinositolphosphorylceramide; and sterols, such as ergostatetraenol. Significant differences were observed in 70 lipid species between the cells grown in the two media, but the two growth conditions did not affect the morphological characteristics of C. albicans. The lipid profiles of the YNB- and YPD-grown C. albicans cells did vary, but these differences did not influence their response to the majority of the tested agents. Rather, the observed differences could be attributed to the slow growth rate of the Candida cells in YNB compared to YPD. Notably, the altered lipid changes between the two media did impact the susceptibility to some drugs. This data provided evidence that changes in media can lead to certain lipid alterations, which may affect specific pathways but, in general, do not affect the majority of the phenotypic properties of C. albicans. It was determined that either YNB or YPD may be suitable for the growth and lipid analysis of C. albicans, depending upon the experimental requirements, but additional precautions are necessary when correlating the phenotypes with the lipids.  相似文献

Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) has been identified as a potential whole-plant source of poly phenol, oil, and polymeric hydrocarbon. Based on in situ sampling, a range of 4.7-14.4% (dry weight) polyphenol + oil (variation significant at 1% level) and 0.2-1.2% polymeric hydrocarbon (variation significant at 5% level) were found among 48 Maryland and northern Virginia populations. In a 2-yr replicated evaluation of progenies from 41 populations, significant differences (5% level) in vigor,Aphis nerii feeding preference, numbers of plants surviving the seeding year, and numbers of tillers produced the second year were observed. Genetic variation for agronomic traits was generally small, but appeared sufficient to justify a breeding program. Excluding aphid feeding-preference, all agronomic variables were positively correlated with each other (significant at 1% level); aphid feeding-preference was weakly, negatively correlated with the remaining agronomic variables (significant at 1% level). Chemical and agronomic data were not significantly correlated. Factor analysis indicated that plants which performed well early in their life cycle would be expected to perform well on a long term basis. Based on cluster analysis, the environment in which some populations developed may have affected in situ production of poly phenols + oil and polymeric hydrocarbon as well as the subsequent agronomic performance of their progenies.  相似文献

Juniperus communis L., also known as the common juniper, is a dioecious aromatic evergreen shrub and has been traditionally used in many countries as a diuretic, antiseptic, and digestive and as a flavor to aromatize certain alcoholic beverages. We analyzed the chemical variability in the volatile profiles from berries of J. communis, harvested in one of the oldest European parks, the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise (PNALM, Central Italy). We examined the berries in different phases of the biological cycle for 1 year (at six ripening stages). Hydrodistilled essential oils from the fresh berries were analyzed by gas chromatography–flame ionization detection (GC-FID), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and principal component analysis (PCA). A total of 90 components were detected, and remarkable qualitative and quantitative differences were observed in the chemical components during the ripening stages, from the green unripe berries to the bluish-black berries harvested at full maturity. The essential oils were an α-pinene (13.43–32.34%) chemotype. The monoterpene hydrocarbons decreased during the ripening with a progressive increase in sesquiterpenes such as germacrene D (12.29–17.59%) and β-caryophyllene (7.71–8.51%), which are the major components in ripe berry essential oils. The sesquiterpene hydrocarbon fraction (65.3–47.9%) also contained α-humulene, germacrene B, δ-cadinene, bicyclogermacrene, and eudesma 4(14),11 diene. Germacrene D and β-caryophyllene in high concentrations may be considered as marker components of the genus Juniperus from the Molise region. This particular chemical composition has been reported for the first time. It is interesting to note the presence of β-caryophyllene (7–11%), whose inhalation has been reported to affect anxiety and depression in a rat model. An in vitro antifungal assay showed that the essential oil from green and ripe berries inhibits the growth of Sclerotium rolfsii, a phytopathogen fungus that causes post-harvest diseases in many fruits and vegetables.  相似文献

Gelatin films developed from fish skin incorporated with longan seeds extract (LS) or butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) at different concentrations were prepared and characterized. The film thickness was in the range of 35 to 37 μm, and the transparency was 3.24 to 3.36 for the films with and without the addition of LS or BHT (p?<?0.05). Significant increases in redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) values were observed when the concentration of LS increased (p?<?0.05). Water vapour permeability (WVP) slightly decreased when the concentration of LS increased, while no significant change was observed between the control and the BHT films (p?>?0.05). Tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EAB) were in the range of 48 to 53 MPa and 16 to 19 %, respectively. The highest (65.7 J/g) and lowest (38.7 J/g) transition enthalpy was found in the control and LS 500 ppm films, respectively. Slight differences in protein pattern were observed under SDS-PAGE between treatments of the film. These differences were also observed in the FTIR spectrum. Films incorporated with LS or BHT showed the preventive effect on lipid oxidation of soybean oil during 30 days of storage. At the level of 500 ppm, LS provided the highest efficacy for lipid oxidation retardation as evidenced by lower peroxide value (PV), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) values (p?>?0.05). A trial was conducted to examine the effect of cinnamon essential oil supplementation on lamb growth performance and meat quality. Sixteen male lambs were randomly assigned to two groups. The first group served as control and was given a basal diet, and the second group was given the same diet supplemented with cinnamon oil (1 ml/kg of concentrated feed) for 35 days. Incorporation of cinnamon oil did not affect growth performance (P>0.05). Meat pH, colour, water-holding capacity, shear force, intramuscular fat and lipid oxidation values of longissimus thoracis muscle were not significantly influenced by cinnamon oil supplementation (P>0.05). The post-inoculation counts of Salmonella enteritidis and Listeria monocytogenes on raw meat during refrigerated storage for 6 days did not differ (P>0.05) between the two groups. The results show that cinnamon oil supplementation may not have the potential to improve lamb growth performance and meat quality characteristics.  相似文献

Although petroleum hydrocarbons discharged from the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout were shown to have a pronounced impact on indigenous microbial communities in the Gulf of Mexico, effects on nearshore or coastal ecosystems remain understudied. This study investigated the successional patterns of functional and taxonomic diversity for over 1 year after the DWH oil was deposited on Pensacola Beach sands (FL, USA), using metagenomic and 16S rRNA gene amplicon techniques. Gamma- and Alphaproteobacteria were enriched in oiled sediments, in corroboration of previous studies. In contrast to previous studies, we observed an increase in the functional diversity of the community in response to oil contamination and a functional transition from generalist populations within 4 months after oil came ashore to specialists a year later, when oil was undetectable. At the latter time point, a typical beach community had reestablished that showed little to no evidence of oil hydrocarbon degradation potential, was enriched in archaeal taxa known to be sensitive to xenobiotics, but differed significantly from the community before the oil spill. Further, a clear succession pattern was observed, where early responders to oil contamination, likely degrading aliphatic hydrocarbons, were replaced after 3 months by populations capable of aromatic hydrocarbon decomposition. Collectively, our results advance the understanding of how natural benthic microbial communities respond to crude oil perturbation, supporting the specialization-disturbance hypothesis; that is, the expectation that disturbance favors generalists, while providing (microbial) indicator species and genes for the chemical evolution of oil hydrocarbons during degradation and weathering.  相似文献

The environmental conditions to which juvenile barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) were exposed during growth were found to affect their body size at fledging as well as their final adult body size. Small juveniles showed compensatory growth from the time of fledging up to one year of age, but this did not fully compensate the differences in body size that were established before fledging. The variation in protein content in plants eaten during growth could probably explain the observed body size differences, sometimes of more than 10%, between different categories of adult geese. Our results imply that one cannot infer selection on morphological characters from differences between samples of adult birds from different localities or from different cohorts within a population, without first showing that environmental conditions during growth do not affect the development of the characters under study.  相似文献

An experiment investigated whether the inclusion of chicory (Cichorium intybus) in swards grazed by beef steers altered their performance, carcass characteristics or parasitism when compared to steers grazing perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Triplicate 2-ha plots were established with a chicory/ryegrass mix or ryegrass control. Forty-eight Belgian Blue-cross steers were used in the first grazing season and a core group (n = 36) were retained for finishing in the second grazing season. The experiment comprised of a standardisation and measurement period. During standardisation, steers grazed a ryegrass/white clover pasture as one group. Animals were allocated to treatment on the basis of liveweight, body condition and faecal egg counts (FEC) determined 7 days prior to the measurement period. The measurement period ran from 25 May until 28 September 2010 and 12 April until 11 October 2011in the first and second grazing year. Steers were weighed every 14 days at pasture or 28 days during housing. In the first grazing year, faecal samples were collected for FEC and parasite cultures. At the end of the first grazing year, individual blood samples were taken to determine O. ostertagi antibody and plasma pepsinogen levels. During winter, animals were housed as one group and fed silage. In the second grazing year, steers were slaughtered when deemed to reach fat class 3. Data on steer performance showed no differences in daily live-weight gain which averaged 1.04 kg/day. The conformation, fat grade and killing out proportion of beef steers grazing chicory/ryegrass or ryegrass were not found to differ. No differences in FEC, O. ostertagi antibody or plasma pepsinogen levels of beef steers grazing either chicory/ryegrass or ryegrass were observed. Overall, there were no detrimental effects of including chicory in swards grazed by beef cattle on their performance, carcass characteristics or helminth parasitism, when compared with steers grazing ryegrass.  相似文献

Data obtained during feeding of infested females and males of Citellophilus tesquorum altaicus Ioff, 1936 (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae), the main vector of plague in Tuva natural plague focus, on the natural hosts and on laboratory animals were analyzed. Sexual differences in fleas were found to depend on the host. Females fed more actively on longtailed ground squirrels Spermophilus undulatus than on white mice. The feeding activity of males on the two hosts did not differ. A higher mortality of infested females and males was observed during feeding on mice. The frequency of block formation and pathogen transmission in males was higher during bloodsucking on the ground squirrel; in females, during feeding on mice. Thus, sex-related differences in the plague pathogen transmission revealed in laboratory white mice may be not the same in nature. This should be taken into account when extrapolating the experimental data on the natural relations between the plague pathogen and ectoparasites.  相似文献

White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a new disease of bats that has devastated populations in eastern North America. Infection with the fungus, Geomyces destructans, is thought to increase the time bats spend out of torpor during hibernation, leading to starvation. Little is known about hibernation in healthy, free-ranging bats and more data are needed to help predict consequences of WNS. Trade-offs presumably exist between the energetic benefits and physiological/ecological costs of torpor, leading to the prediction that the relative importance of spring energy reserves should affect an individual''s use of torpor and depletion of energy reserves during winter. Myotis lucifugus mate during fall and winter but females do not become pregnant until after spring emergence. Thus, female reproductive success depends on spring fat reserves while male reproductive success does not. Consequently, females should be “thrifty” in their use of fat compared to males. We measured body condition index (BCI; mass/forearm length) of 432 M. lucifugus in Manitoba, Canada during the winter of 2009/2010. Bats were captured during the fall mating period (n = 200), early hibernation (n = 125), and late hibernation (n = 128). Adult females entered hibernation with greater fat reserves and consumed those reserves more slowly than adult males and young of the year. Consequently, adult females may be more likely than males or young of the year to survive the disruption of energy balance associated with WNS, although surviving females may not have sufficient reserves to support reproduction.  相似文献

Oral and intra-peritoneal acute toxicity and the sub-chronic intra-peritoneal toxicity of the essential oil of Ocimum gratissimum Linn, Lamiaceae (Ocimum oil), was investigated. The acute toxicity test involved the oral and intra-peritoneal administration of graded doses of Ocimum oil prepared as a 4% v/v emulsion to 2 groups each of 30 rats and mice. LD50 and LD100 were determined for both routes and species. In the sub-chronic toxicity study, 25 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into 4 test groups (treated with three graded sub-lethal doses of Ocimum oil prepared as a 4% v/v emulsion) and a control. Organs and blood samples were taken for analyses after a 30 day treatment period. A dose-dependent sedative effect of Ocimum oil was observed during the acute toxicity study in mice and rats and in the sub-chronic test in rats. Evidence of treatment, route, and dose-dependent toxicity were detected in both studies. Changes in weight of the testes, hearts, kidneys, intestines and lungs of the rats were statistically insignificant (ANOVA P < 0.05). Data analyses of blood biochemical, haematological and histopathological findings showed significant differences between control and treated groups and revealed that Ocimum oil is capable of invoking an inflammatory response that transits from acute to chronic on persistent administration. While the study revealed that Ocimum oil might be better tolerated when administered orally for systemic delivery, the oil has toxic potentialities that should not be overlooked.  相似文献

A two-year field study was conducted in an orange grove in the United States (Florida) to characterize the phenology of the entomopathogen Hirsutella citriformis Speare infecting adults of the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama. On the average, 23% of adults observed on mature leaves were killed by H. citriformis. These dead psyllids were characterized as being mummified and covered to various extents by synnemata produced by the fungus. Mummified cadavers were most abundant on citrus leaves during the fall and winter months, with the maximal percentage of mummified psyllids sometimes exceeding 75% of the total number of adults observed. Mummified cadavers were nearly absent each spring, presumably because relative humidity levels were suboptimal for the fungus at this time. Based on dispersion analyses, a monitoring plan for mummified cadavers would best include multiple samples in individual trees as well as multiple tree samples throughout a grove. Mummified cadavers with synnemata, which serve as point sources for new infections of the fungus in psyllids, were observed to remain on leaves for a mean of 68?days (one cadaver remained on a leaf for 168?days). Rainfall was positively correlated with the number of days mummies remained on leaves while mean daily air temperature was negatively correlated. Mummified cadavers were abundant in the summer during 2006 but not during 2007. This may have been a density-dependent consequence of low psyllid host populations in the grove in 2007. Alternatively, combination sprays of oil and copper applied during 2007 may have suppressed the fungus. This latter possibility prompted a laboratory investigation into the toxicity to H. citriformis of six chemicals commonly used in citrus. Copper hydroxide, petroleum oil, and elemental sulfur at maximum label rates each significantly reduced the infectivity of a laboratory culture of H. citriformis while copper sulfate pentahydrate, aluminum tris and alpha-keto/humic acids did not. This finding indicates that citrus growers interested in capitalizing on H. citriformis as a biological control agent of D. citri should avoid applying high rates of copper hydroxide, oil or sulfur.  相似文献

The molecular and biological consequences of UV-B radiation were investigated by studying five species of marine bacteria and one enteric bacterium. Laboratory cultures were exposed to an artificial UV-B source and subjected to various post-UV irradiation treatments. Significant differences in survival subsequent to UV-B radiation were observed among the isolates, as measured by culturable counts. UV-B-induced DNA photodamage was investigated by using a highly specific radioimmunoassay to measure cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs). The CPDs determined following UV-B exposure were comparable for all of the organisms except Sphingomonas sp. strain RB2256, a facultatively oligotrophic ultramicrobacterium. This organism exhibited little DNA damage and a high level of UV-B resistance. Physiological conditioning by growth phase and starvation did not change the UV-B sensitivity of marine bacteria. The rates of photoreactivation following exposure to UV-B were investigated by using different light sources (UV-A and cool white light). The rates of photoreactivation were greatest during UV-A exposure, although diverse responses were observed. The differences in sensitivity to UV-B radiation between strains were reduced after photoreactivation. The survival and CPD data obtained for Vibrio natriegens when we used two UV-B exposure periods interrupted by a repair period (photoreactivation plus dark repair) suggested that photoadaptation could occur. Our results revealed that there are wide variations in marine bacteria in their responses to UV radiation and subsequent repair strategies, suggesting that UV-B radiation may affect the microbial community structure in surface water.  相似文献

In this study the estrous cycle of the aoudad has been analyzed and characterized for the first time, using non-invasive methods for tracking reproductive cyclicity. The duration of the estrous cycle is 23 days (range 16-32 days), with a luteal phase of 17 days (range 12-27 days) and an interluteal phase of 6 days (range 3-14 days). The estrous cycle did not differ between females, but it was affected by the time of the year. Intraindividual variation of the cycle was observed in one out of the nine individuals. The average hormone concentration values, the estrogen:progestogen ratio, as well as their minimum and maximum values for each interluteal and luteal phases of the estrous cycle, are shown. Interindividual differences found in these values were basically associated with age. Females tended to start their cycle when in the presence of an adult male. Anestrus was observed in study females except for the oldest (14 years old). Age and anestrus onset were correlated, with younger females starting earlier than the older ones. This study reveals that Ammotragus reproductive biology is more similar to that of Capra than Ovis, except for some endocrinological features.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of dietary-induced insulin enhancement during the late luteal phase on subsequent fertility of gilts. Fifty-two littermate cyclic gilts were subjected to dietary treatments where two energy sources were tested: corn starch (T1) and soybean oil (T2). The experimental diets were supposed to provide similar amounts of dietary energy, but from different sources. Gilts were fed ad libitum, starting day 8 of the estrous cycle, until the next standing heat. Blood sampling was performed in a subgroup of 20 gilts on days 14 and 21 of the cycle for analyses of glucose and insulin, and after ovulation detection until 18 h after ovulation for progesterone. All gilts were slaughtered on day 28 of pregnancy and the reproductive tracts recovered for further analysis. T1 gilts showed higher postprandial insulin peak on days 14 and 21 and lower glucose levels 4 h after feeding on day 14 (P<0.05), however, there were no treatment effects on plasma progesterone concentrations. Dietary energy sources did not affect average daily feed intake, body weight and backfat on day 28 of pregnancy. Estrous cycle length, estrus duration and time of ovulation were not affected by previous nutritional treatments either. T1 gilts showed higher ovulation rates, number of embryos, embryo weight and placental weight (P<0.05). There were no treatment effects on pregnancy rate, embryo survival rate and volume of amniotic fluid. A positive correlation between progesterone concentration 18 h after ovulation and ovulation rate was observed (r=0.75; P<0.01). These results suggest that it is possible to manipulate dietary insulin response in cyclic gilts and, thus, improve reproductive efficiency when feeding starch as the main energy source during the late luteal and follicular phases of the cycle.  相似文献

The effect of sex, source of saturated fat (lard v. palm oil) and glycerol inclusion in the fattening diet on composition and fatty acid positional distribution in the triglyceride molecule was studied in pigs from 78 to 110 kg BW. Average daily gain and carcass characteristics, including ham and loin weight, were not affected by dietary treatment but sex affected backfat depth (P<0.01). A significant interaction between sex and glycerol inclusion was observed; dietary glycerol increased lean content in gilts but not in barrows (P<0.05 for the interaction). Individual and total saturated fatty acid (SFA) concentrations were greater in barrows than in gilts. In contrast, the concentration of total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and of C18:2n-6, C18:3n-3, C20:3n-9 and C20:4n-6 in the intramuscular fat (IMF) was higher (P<0.05) in gilts than in barrows. Sex did not affect total monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) concentration in the IMF. The proportion of SFA in the subcutaneous fat (SF) was higher in barrows than in gilts (P<0.001). Within the individual SFA, sex affected only the concentrations of C14:0 and C16:0 (P<0.001). Dietary fat did not affect total SFA or PUFA concentrations of the IMF but the subcutaneous total MUFA concentration tended to be higher (P=0.079) in pigs fed lard than in pigs fed palm oil. Dietary glycerol increased total MUFA and C18:1n-9 concentration in the IMF and increased total MUFA and decreased C18:2n-6, C18:3n-3 and total PUFA concentrations in the SF. The data indicate that altering the fatty acid composition of the triglyceride molecule at the 2-position, by dietary intervention during the fattening phase, is very limited.  相似文献

建立了黑里河自然保护区油松年轮宽度年表,通过不同径级油松径向生长对逐月气候因子的响应关系,研究了干旱对不同径级油松径向生长的影响。结果表明:两个径级油松的年轮宽度指数达到极显著相关(R=0.943,P<0.01),其中小径级(平均胸径20 cm)油松年表的平均敏感度显著高于大径级(平均胸径43 cm)油松年表(P<0.01)。不同径级油松均与上年9月、当年2月及当年5—6月的降水显著正相关(P<0.05),与当年6月的平均温度显著负相关(P<0.05),此外,小径级油松还与当年7月的降水显著正相关(P<0.05);降水是影响油松生长的主要气候因子。不同径级油松的径向生长量在干旱年份均显著降低(P<0.01)且小径级油松的生长降低量显著高于大径级油松(P<0.01);不同径级油松生长量在干旱发生后1年左右的时间内均恢复正常且小径级油松恢复速度更快。  相似文献
