Our objective was to evaluate the usefulness of the germination vs. the X-ray test in determining the initial viability of seeds of five wild species (Moringa peregrina, Abrus precatorius, Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Acacia ehrenbergiana and Acacia tortilis) from Saudi Arabia. Usually several days were required to determine the viability of all five species via germination tests. However, X-ray test will give immediate results on filled/viable seeds. Seeds of all species, except Acacia ehrenbergiana and Acacia tortilis showed high viability in both germination (96–72% at 25/15 °C, 94–70% at 35/25 °C) and X-ray (100–80%) test. Furthermore, there was a general agreement between the germination (19%, 14% at 25/15 °C and 17% and 12% at 35/25 °C) and X-ray (8%, 4%) tests in which seed viability of Acacia ehrenbergiana and Acacia tortilis was very low due to insect damaged embryo as shown in X-ray analysis. Seeds of Abruspreca torius have physical dormancy, which was broken by scarification in concentrated sulfuric acid (10 min), and they exhibited high viability in both the germination (83% at 25/15 °C and 81% at 35/25 °C) and X-ray (96%) tests. Most of the nongerminated seeds of the five species except those of Acacia ehrenbergiana and Acacia tortilis, were alive as judged by the tetrazolium test (TZ). Thus, for the five species examined, the X-ray test was proved to be a good and rapid predictor of seed viability.  相似文献

Leaves and twigs from shrub species consumed by range goats: Acacia berlandieri, Acacia farnesiana, Acacia greggii, Acacia rigidula, Celtis pallida, Cercidium macrum, Condalia obovata, Cordia boissieri, Desmanthus virgathus, Leucaena leucocephala, Leucophyllum texanum, Opuntia lindehimieri, Porlieria angustifolia, Prosopis glandulosa, and Ziziphus obtusifolia were evaluated for comparative seasonal contents of Ca, P, Mg K, Zn, Mn, Cu and Fe. Plants were collected in summer (September 12, 1992), fall (November 20, 1992), winter (February 20, 1993) and spring (May 22, 1993) in Marı́n, County, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. During spring and summer mineral concentrations were higher in general. Only Ca, Mg, K, and Fe were in substantial amounts in all seasons to meet adult goat requirements. With the exception of spring, shrubs had extremely low P concentrations. Manganese, Cu and Zn in most plants had low marginal levels to meet adult goat requirements. Moreover, potential intake of P, Mn, Cu and Zn in shrub species by goats weighing 50 kg BW consuming 2.0 kg per day DM was low. However, plants such as D. virgathus, L. texanum, P. glandulosa, L. leucocephala and C. macrum can be considered prominent components in diets of range goats because of their high mineral concentrations. It appears that ration formulations for range goats in northeastern Mexico should include P, Mn, Cu and Zn in all seasons of the year.  相似文献

We examined the potential of dendrochronology to assess biomass productivity of individual savanna species from a semi-arid ecosystem in southern Senegal. The 9 tree species examined in this dendrochronologial study included: Acacia macrostachya, Acacia seyal, Balanites aegyptiaca, Combretum glutinosum, Cordyla pinnata, Pterocarpus erinaceus, Terminalia macroptera, Daniellia oliveri, and Combretum nigricans. Dendrochronologial analyses were applied on cross-sectional disks obtained from the tree stem to reconstruct past tree growth (diameter and biomass) histories. Despite challenges with discerning annual tree rings in these savanna species (associated with ring suppression, wedging, indistinct ring boundaries, and fires), tree species (A. macrostachya, A. seyal, and T. macroptera) with the highest dendrochronology potential produced a clear thin band of marginal parenchyma. A. macrostachya had rapid annual diameter and biomass growth increments in the juvenile years (ages 1–10), compared to T. macroptera which showed greater growth past this early juvenile period. Given the same species, generally wetter forests had lower annual and cumulative growth rates that were likely due to increased inter-tree and tree-grass competition for soil moisture in the wetter forests. We concluded that dendrochronology is well suited for retrospective annual biomass assessment in savanna trees of Senegal, West Africa.  相似文献

An analytical study has been made of gum specimens from Acacia hebeclada, A. kirkii, A. newbrownii and A. reficiens (all of the series Gummiferae) and of Acacia erubescens, A.fleckii, A. mellifera ssp. mellifera and A. mellifera ssp. detinens (all of the series Vulgares). The data obtained give further support for the main chemotaxonomic differences between the Gummiferae and Vulgares species recorded previously. In addition, two of the species studied have exceptional features; the gum exudate from A. hebeclada contains 9.4% of nitrogen; that from A. erubescens contains 12% of glucose.  相似文献

Ceratocystis wilt disease has caused significant mortality in duku (Lansium domesticum) since 2014 and has now spread to all districts in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Recently, 16 isolates from duku representing populations from various districts in South Sumatra were isolated. Analysis for the morphological characteristic of the isolate showed that the population has a uniform morphology. Genetic analysis based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and β-tubulin sequences verified that the population has being dominated by the ITS5 haplotype of Ceratocystis fimbriata and a new ITS group, the ITS7b haplotype that was localized in Musi Banyuasin. Both haplotypes were highly pathogenic to duku. Inoculation tests on various forest and agroforestry plant hosts showed that both haplotypes were highly pathogenic to Acacia mangium, moderately pathogenic to Acacia carsicarpa, Eucalyptus urophylla, and Melaleuca cajuputi, but weakly pathogenic to Dyera costulata, Hevea brasiliensis, and Alstonia scholaris. Therefore, this pathogen becomes a serious threat to Indonesia’s biodiversity due to its ability to infect forest and agroforestry plants, especially the indigenous ones.  相似文献

Condensed tannins in plants are found free and attached to protein and fibre but it is not known whether these fractions influence rumen degradation and microbial colonisation. This study explored the rumen degradation of tropical tannin-rich plants and the relationship between the disappearance of free and bound condensed tannin fractions and microbial communities colonising plant particles using in situ and in vitro experiments. Leaves from Calliandra calothyrsus, Gliricidia sepium, and Leucaena leucocephala, pods from Acacia nilotica and the leaves of two agricultural by-products: Manihot esculenta and Musa spp. were incubated in situ in the rumen of three dairy cows to determine their degradability for up to 96 h. Tannin disappearance was determined at 24 h of incubation, and adherent microbial communities were examined at 3 and 12 h of incubation using a metataxonomic approach. An in vitro approach was also used to assess the effects of these plants on rumen fermentation parameters. All plants contained more than 100 g/kg of condensed tannins with a large proportion (32–61%) bound to proteins. Calliandra calothyrsus had the highest concentration of condensed tannins at 361 g/kg, whereas Acacia nilotica was particularly rich in hydrolysable tannins (350 g/kg). Free condensed tannins from all plants completely disappeared after 24-h incubation in the rumen. Disappearance of protein-bound condensed tannins was variable with values ranging from 93% for Gliricidia sepium to 21% for Acacia nilotica. In contrast, fibre-bound condensed tannin disappearance averaged ~ 82% and did not vary between plants. Disappearance of bound fractions of condensed tannins was not associated with the degradability of plant fractions. The presence of tannins interfered with the microbial colonisation of plants. Each plant had distinct bacterial and archaeal communities after 3 and 12 h of incubation in the rumen and distinct protozoal communities at 3 h. Adherent communities in tannin-rich plants had a lower relative abundance of fibrolytic microbes, notably Fibrobacter spp. whereas, archaea diversity was reduced in high-tannin-containing Calliandra calothyrsus and Acacia nilotica at 12 h of incubation. Concurrently, in vitro methane production was lower for Calliandra calothyrsus, Acacia nilotica and Leucaena leucocephala although for the latter total volatile fatty acids production was not affected and was similar to control. Here, we show that the total amount of hydrolysable and condensed tannins contained in a plant govern the interaction with rumen microbes affecting degradability and fermentation. The effect of protein- and fibre-bound condensed tannins on degradability is less important.  相似文献

Nine herbal powders were tested against root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White) Chitwood (Tylenchida: Meloidogynidae) under greenhouse conditions. The herbal powders were collected from Gezira State, Sudan. Herbal powders were used without extraction to simplify the application by farmers. Most of the herbal powders were effective in controlling M. incognita in the soil compared to the control. Some treatments (e.g., Acacia nilotica (L.), Argemone mexicana L., and Azadirachta indica A. Juss) had statistically lower Root Knot Index (RNI) than the control. The number of juveniles per 100 g soil was lower in soil amended with Dinbera retroflexa (Vahl), Azadirachta indica, Salvadora persica (L.), and Acacia nilotica than in unamended soil. The results of both RNI and number of juveniles were not significantly different from the synthetic nematicide used. Herbal powders from A. indica and Acacia nilotica may be promising in controlling of this pest because they are readily available to farmers in tropical regions.  相似文献

Considering the potentiality of honey in combating diseases, the present study was carried out aiming to assess the in vitro antiprotozoal activity of several honeys (Ziziphus spina-christi, Acacia nilotica, Acacia seyal, and Cucurbita maxima) against Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia by employing the sub-culture method. All the tested honeys inhibited the growth of trophozoites, and the level of inhibition varied according to the assayed concentrations and incubation times. Acacia seyal honey had completely stopped motility of E. histolytica trophozoites at a concentration  50 µg/ml after incubation for 72 h. Ziziphus spina-christi, Acacia seyal, and Acacia nilotica honeys had completely inhibited the growth of Giardia lamblia trophozoites at concentration  200 µg/ml after 72 h. These inhibitory activities were similar to that of Metronidazole? which showed IC50 = 0.27. The mammalian cytotoxicity of these honeys against normal Vero cell line which determined by applying MTT method verified the nontoxicity of the examined honeys. Also the proximate composition of the samples indicated compliance with the natural honey standards. The findings of the study indicate the need for in vivo studies and further investigations to identify active principles with antiprotozoal activities from natural honeys.  相似文献

Accurate and up to date land use and land cover (LU/LC) changes information is the main source to understanding and assessing the environmental outcomes of such changes and is important for development plans. Thus, this study quantified the outlines of land cover variation of 10-years in the northwestern costal land of the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia. Two different supervised classification algorithms are visualized and evaluated to preparing a policy recommendation for the proper improvements towards better determining the tendency and the proportion of the vegetation cover changes. Firstly, to determine present vegetation structure of study area, 78 stands with a size of 50 × 50 m were analysed. Secondly, to obtain the vegetation dynamics in this area, two satellite images of temporal data sets were used; therefore, SPOT-5 images were obtained in 2004 and 2013. For each data set, four SPOT-5 scenes were placed into approximately 250-km intervals to cover the northwestern coastal land of the Red Sea. Both supervised and non-supervised cataloguing methods were attained towards organise the study area in 4-major land cover classes through using 5 various organizations algorithms. Approximately 900 points were evenly distributed within each SPOT-5 image and used for assessment accuracy. The floristic composition exhibits high diversity with 142 species and seven vegetation types were identified after multivariate analysis (VG I: Acacia tortilis-Acacia ehrenbergiana, VG II: Acacia tortilis-Stipagrostis plumosa, VG III: Zygophyllum coccineum-Zygophyllum simplex, VG IV: Acacia raddiana-Lycium shawii-Anabasis setifera, VG V: Tamarix aucheriana-Juncus rigidus, VG VI: Capparis decidua-Zygophyllum simplex and VG VII: Avicennia marina-Aristida adscensionis) and ranged between halophytic vegetation on the coast to xerophytic vegetation with scattered Acacia trees inland. The dynamic results showed rapid, imbalanced variations arises between 3-land cover classes (areas as urban, vegetation and desert). However, these findings shall serve as the baseline data for the design of rehabilitation programs that conserve biodiversity in arid regions and form treasured resources for an urban planner and decision makers to device bearable usage of land and environmental planning.  相似文献

Theoretical models predict that the relative importance of facilitation and competition may vary inversely across gradients of abiotic stress. However, these predictions have not been thoroughly tested in the field, especially in arid and semi-arid environments. In this study, we evaluated how the net effect of Acacia tortilis subsp. raddiana (syn. A. raddiana) trees on the herbaceous species varies across a gradient of water stress in arid Tunisian ecosystems. Our results show that the influence of trees on the herbaceous stratum is beneficial. An Acacia tree improves the richness of herbaceous species around it by two to three times. The positive effect of Acacia raddiana on species composition is characterised in particular by a better development of some species of high pastoral value such as Cenchrusciliaris, Cynodon dactylon, Eragrostis papposa, Sisymbrium irio and Chenopodium album. We fitted the relationship between seasonal rainfall and the relative neighbour effect index, which varied across this gradient, to a linear model. Our results show that herbaceous plant cover, plant biomass, plant density and diversity are higher under a tree canopy and this positive interaction still increase with higher abiotic stress conditions.  相似文献

Metabolomic profiling of different parts (leaves, flowers and pods) of Acacia species (Acacia nilotica, Acacia seyal and Acacia laeta) was evaluated. The multivariate data analyses such as principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were used to differentiate the distribution of plant metabolites among different species or different organs of the same species. A.nilotica was characterized with a high content of saponins and A.seyal was characterized with high contents of proteins, phenolics, flavonoids and anthocyanins. A.laeta had a higher content of carbohydrates than A. nilotica and A. seyal. On the basis of these results, total antioxidant capacity, DPPH free radical scavenging activity and reducing power of the methanolic extracts of studied parts were evaluated. A.nilotica and A.seyal extracts showed less inhibitory concentration 50 (IC50) compared to A.laeta extracts which means that these two species have the strongest radical scavenging activity whereas A. laeta extracts have the lowest radical scavenging activity. A positive correlation between saponins and flavonoids with total antioxidant capacity and DPPH radical scavenging activity was observed. Based on these results, the potentiality of these plants as antioxidants was discussed.  相似文献

A new cyanogenic glucoside, isolated from pods of Acacia sieberiana var. woodii, was shown to be (2R)-2- (β-d-glucopyranosyloxy)-3-hydroxy-3-methylbutanenitrile by spectroscopic and chemical methods. The absolute configuration of this glucoside was correlated with that of proacacipetalin by oxymercuration of the latter, followed by borohydride reduction of the product.  相似文献

From the root bark of Acacia leucophloea (Mimosaceae) two new pimar-8(14)-ene diterpenoids have been isolated. Their structures have been established by chemical and spectroscopic means as 1β,15R,16-trihydroxypimar8(14)-ene(leucophleol) and 15R,16-epoxy-1β,11α-dihydroxypimar-8(14)-ene(leucophleoxol).  相似文献

Methylation and hydrolysis studies have shown that gum specimens from Acacia difformis, A. mabellae, A. retinodes and A. rubida, which belong to Bentham's Series I (Phyllodineae), subseries 6F (Uninerves Racemosae), are similar structurally to those from A. podalyriifolia and A. pycnantha. This is further evidence that A. cyanophylla, which was placed next to A. pycnantha by Bentham, is atypical of the Series I Acacias.  相似文献

The population structure of 10 common woody perennials was investigated in terms of size distribution, height, diameter and density in Wadi Gimal along the Red Sea coast of Egypt. It was attempted to assess the effect of elevation on the size, distribution and density of the studied species. These species are: five trees (Acacia tortilis subsp. raddiana, Acacia tortilis subsp. tortilis, Balanites aegyptiaca, Tamarix aphylla, and Tamarix nilotica), two shrubs (Leptadenia pyrotechnica and Nitraria retusa) and three shrublets (Pulicaria undulata, Zilla spinosa, and Zygophyllum coccineum). The size estimations were then used to classify population into six size classes: 20-80 cm for shrublets, 100-500 cm for shrubs, and 2-10 m for trees. The absolute and relative frequency of individuals and mean height, diameter and height to diameter ratio per individual in each size class were determined. Density of occurrence of most species, except B. aegyptiaca, decreased as elevation increased. The height-to-diameter ratio was less than unity for most of the recorded species except T. nilotica. Several forms - including, positively and negatively skewed, inverse J-shaped, bell shaped and more or less J-shaped distributions - were recognized along the different elevations. The size structure of some species was positively related with soil variables, such as T. nilotica with sulphate, while some others were negatively significant related to the substrate characteristics, such as Z. spinosa with salinity.  相似文献

Acacia species are multipurpose trees, widely used in the traditional systems of medicine to treat various ailments. The major objective of the present study was to determine the gene expression of enzymatic antioxidants by acetone extract from the stem bark of three Acacia species (Acacia dealbata, Acacia ferruginea and Acacia leucophloea) in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced human hepatoma (HepG2) cells. The expression of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase containing copper–zinc (CuZnSOD)/manganese (MnSOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in HepG2 cells was evaluated by real-time PCR. The results of antioxidant enzyme expression in real-time PCR study revealed that the H2O2 (200 μM) challenged HepG2 cells reduced the expression of enzymes such as SOD, GPx and CAT. However, the cells pre-treated with acetone extracts of all the three Acacia species significantly (P > 0.05) up-regulated the expression of antioxidant enzymes in a concentration dependent manner (25, 50 and 75 μg/mL). In conclusion, the findings of our study demonstrated that the acetone extract of Acacia species effectively inhibited H2O2 mediated oxidative stress and may be useful as a therapeutic agent in preventing oxidative stress mediated diseases.  相似文献
