Eustrongylides sp. larvae were found to be numerous in Bagrus docmac, Clarias mossambicus and Haplochromis spp. from Lake Victoria, rare in Haplochromis spp. and absent from B. docmac and C. lazera from Lake George, East Africa. Larvae encyst in the mesenteries, spleen and in Haplochromis spp. also in the gonads. Unencysted larvae were observed in muscles. Cyst walls consisted of fibroblasts, collagen strands, and were often infiltrated with fat cells. Fatty changes were observed in infected spleens; the muscle tissue, around the unencysted worms, was digested and infiltrated with fibroblasts. Infected gonads, particularly ovaries were deformed and in heavy infections degenerated completely. The biological implication of this infection with larval Eustrongylides sp. on the host populations in Lake Victoria is discussed.  相似文献

Lake Edward, East Africa, harbours a largely understudied assemblage of haplochromine cichlids that displays a range of adaptions to various specialised trophic niches. In this system, we discovered specimens of Haplochromis with morphologies similar to those of oral-mollusc shellers from Lake Victoria. These morphologies are characterised by short oral jaws with stout teeth that are used either to crush molluscs or to grab the soft bodies of snails and wrench them out of their shells. A morphometric study on 47 specimens from Lake Edward revealed the presence of three new species with an oral-shelling morphology: Haplochromis concilians sp. nov., H. erutus sp. nov. and H. planus sp. nov. All three species are formally described. Stomach-content observations confirmed an opportunistic oral-shelling ecology for H. concilians sp. nov. and H. erutus sp. nov. Within H. planus sp. nov., only large specimens displayed a specialised oral-shelling morphology, but their stomachs were nearly empty, while small specimens consumed mainly Ostracoda and Hydrachnidia. Remarkably, the three species differed considerably in morphology from each other, but they each resembled oral-sheller species from Lake Victoria.  相似文献

The cichlids of Lake Victoria are a textbook example of adaptive radiation, as >500 endemic species arose in just 14,600 years. The degree of genetic differentiation among species is very low due to the short period of time after the radiation, which allows us to ascertain highly differentiated genes that are strong candidates for driving speciation and adaptation. Previous studies have revealed the critical contribution of vision to speciation by showing the existence of highly differentiated alleles in the visual opsin gene among species with different habitat depths. In contrast, the processes of species-specific adaptation to different ecological backgrounds remain to be investigated. Here, we used genome-wide comparative analyses of three species of Lake Victoria cichlids that inhabit different environments—Haplochromis chilotes, H. sauvagei, and Lithochromis rufus—to elucidate the processes of adaptation by estimating population history and by searching for candidate genes that contribute to adaptation. The patterns of changes in population size were quite distinct among the species according to their habitats. We identified many novel adaptive candidate genes, some of which had surprisingly long divergent haplotypes between species, thus showing the footprint of selective sweep events. Molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that a large fraction of the allelic diversity among Lake Victoria cichlids was derived from standing genetic variation that originated before the adaptive radiation. Our analyses uncovered the processes of species-specific adaptation of Lake Victoria cichlids and the complexity of the genomic substrate that facilitated this adaptation.  相似文献

Lake Victoria is famous for its in evolutionary terms young but species‐rich assemblage of cichlid fishes. This ‘superflock’ also includes additional species from adjacent water systems. Lake Victoria is surrounded by several smaller lakes that are connected to the main water body of Lake Victoria only through swampy areas. Lake Kanyaboli is one such lake, harbouring a much poorer species diversity, mostly comprised of Lake Victoria endemics, some of which are now considered extirpated from the main lake. The focus of this study was on the modern haplochromine component of the cichlid fauna, represented by Lipochromis maxillaris, Astatotilapia nubila, Xystichromis phytophagus and Astatotilapia sp. ‘Bigeye’, as well as a number of morphologically distinct haplochromine specimens that could not be assigned to any of the recognized species. We used five microsatellite markers to distinguish these five taxa. Genetically, L. maxillaris was clearly differentiated from all other taxa, and A. sp. ‘Bigeye’ was moderately differentiated from the remaining three. Astatotilapia nubila, X. phytophagus and the unidentified specimens constituted a partially overlapping cluster. As each of the clusters had several (5–14) private alleles, extremely recent divergence is suggested. As all taxa except for A. spBigeye’ and the unidentified specimens also occur or at least occurred in Lake Victoria, it is likely that they evolved as part of the Lake Victoria superflock, while A. spBigeye’ and the unidentified specimens may have currently evolved in situ. The observation of slightly distinct albeit overlapping body shapes and the extremely close genetic relationship between three of the five taxa are fully compatible and in support of the hybrid swarm theory of adaptive radiation.  相似文献

Haplochromis pharyngalis and Haplochromis petronius, two endemic cichlids from the Lake Edward system (Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo), are very similar in general morphology but have been reported to differ in pharyngeal jaw morphology and distribution. This study analysed 51 morphometrics and various qualitative characteristics of 48 specimens from different localities. The morphological traits of both species strongly overlap, and differences in the pharyngeal jaw morphology correspond to a geographic morphocline. We conclude that all specimens belong to one valid species, H. pharyngalis, and consider H. petronius to be a synonym.  相似文献

The phylogeny of the haplochromine cichlids of Lake Kivu was studied using lepidological characters. Only one species, Haplochromis astatodon was found to have a closer relationship to a group outside Lake Kivu, namely Haplochromis sensu stricto. The other 14 species form a monophyletic lineage that is part of a subdivision in the large Lake Victoria-Edward-Kivu flock. The internal phylogeny of this lineage was resolved to the species level.  相似文献

The freshwater gastropod family Viviparidae is nearly cosmopolitan, but absent from South America. On the African continent, two genera are recognized; the widespread Bellamya and the monotypic Neothauma, which is confined to Lake Tanganyika. Most of the African Bellamya species are confined to the major lakes of the Rift Valley area in Africa, i.e. Lake Albert, Lake Malawi, Lake Mweru, and Lake Victoria. The phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial (COI and 16S) and nuclear (H3, 18S and 28S) DNA inferred three major lake-clades; i.e. Lake Victoria/Kyoga/Albert, Lake Malawi and Lake Mweru/Bangweulu. The endemic B. rubicunda from Lake Albert and B. unicolor from Lake Kyoga were inferred to be part of the Lake Victoria clade. Bellamya capillata as identified by shell characters was polyphyletic in gene trees. The monophyletic Bellamya species radiation in Lake Malawi was most nearly related to the Lake Victoria/Kyoga/Albert-clade. Taxa from the Zambian lakes, Mweru and Bangweulu, were inferred together and placed ancestral to the other lakes. Neothauma tanganyicense was inferred as the sister-group to the Zambian Bellamya. Within the lake-clades the endemic radiations show very low genetic diversities (0–4.1% in COI), suggesting much faster morphological divergence than molecular divergence. Alternatively, Bellamya in Africa constitutes only a few species with several sub-species or eco-phenotypic morphs. The African viviparids were inferred to be the sister-group to a clade comprising Asian species, and the relatively low genetic diversity between the clades (12.6–15.5% in COI) makes a recent Miocene dispersal event from Asia to Africa much more likely than an ancient Gondwana vicarience distribution.  相似文献

During the past 30 years, Lake Victoria cichlid fishes have encountered severe environmental and ecological changes including an introduced predator and new prey types. Furthermore, increased eutrophication has led to reduced water transparency and shifted the spectral composition of underwater light to longer wavelengths. In the present study, collections of two cichlid species, Haplochromis pyrrhocephalus and Haplochromis tanaos, from before and after the environmental changes, were compared with respect to their photopic resolution and sensitivity. Eyes of both species were dissected and retinal features were measured from tangential sections. In both species, the eyes became smaller, independently of body size. This decrease possibly occurred to make space for other structures that increased in size. In H. pyrrhocephalus, a significantly lower resolution was found. However, the size, and thus photon‐catching ability of the double cones, remained unchanged, despite the smaller eyes. In the modern populations of H. tanaos, the double cone size increased in relation to eye size, so that the photon‐catching ability of the smaller fish remained the same. However, no significant decrease in resolution was found. Shortwave sensitivity was found to be lower in both modern populations because of a reduction or the complete absence of single cones. The results obtained in the present study imply that these resurgent zooplanktivores are capable of adapting their eye morphology to the changed environmental conditions without losing crucial aspects used for survival and reproduction. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 328–341.  相似文献

We tested whether thermal tolerance and aerobic performance differed between two populations of Nile perch (Lates niloticus) originating from the same source population six decades after their introduction into two lakes in the Lake Victoria basin in East Africa. We used short-term acclimation of juvenile fish to a range of temperatures from ambient to +6°C, and performed critical thermal maximum (CTmax) and respirometry tests to measure upper thermal tolerance, resting and maximum metabolic rates, and aerobic scope (AS). Across acclimation temperatures, Nile perch from the cooler lake (Lake Nabugabo, Uganda) tended to have lower thermal tolerance (i.e., CTmax) and lower aerobic performance (i.e., AS) than Nile perch from the warmer waters of Lake Victoria (Bugonga region, Uganda). Effects of temperature acclimation were more pronounced in the Lake Victoria population, with the Lake Nabugabo fish showing less thermal plasticity in most metabolic traits. Our results suggest phenotypic divergence in thermal tolerance between these two introduced populations in a direction consistent with an adaptive response to local thermal regimes.  相似文献

Cichlid fishes in Lake Victoria are model organisms for studying rapid radiation and speciation. On the way to examine the molecular basis of how these cichlid fishes achieved such a remarkable morphological diversification, we constructed a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library derived from a cichlid species, Haplochromis chilotes, from Lake Victoria. The library includes 157,056 clones with the average insert size of 128 kb, corresponding to a 10-fold coverage of the H. chilotes genome. Given that the cichlid fishes endemic to Lake Victoria are closely related to one another phylogenetically and their genomes are nearly identical, this BAC library can be utilized to isolate genes from the more than 200 Haplochromine cichlid species in Lake Victoria.  相似文献

Lake Victoria holds a young but species‐rich assemblage of cichlid fishes, which form a monophyletic assemblage with additional species from surrounding water bodies, termed the Lake Victoria superflock. Lake Victoria is surrounded by smaller lakes that are somewhat disconnected from the main lake. Lake Kanyaboli is such a small lake, having markedly reduced species diversity, in part comprised of Lake Victoria species and endemics. Here, we studied the modern haplochromine component of the cichlid fauna, represented by Lipochromis maxillaris, Astatotilapia nubila, Xystichromis phytophagus and Astatotilapia sp. ‘Bigeye’, as well as a number of unidentified modern haplochromine specimens. We used landmark‐based geometric morphometrics to study the degree of morphological divergence among those young entities. Twenty landmarks and 14 interlandmark distances were used for shape analysis. Multivariate analysis revealed significant differences between all four species, but principal component analysis and canonical variate analysis did not clearly discriminate between A. nubila and X. phytophagus, demonstrating great overall morphological similarity despite clear dietary differences. Besides coloration there was sexual dimorphism in body proportions, so that only male individuals were analysed further. In all four species, the observed similarities and differences in body shape conform to the type of ecological specialization of the fish. Most unidentified specimens overlapped the range of A. nubila and X. phytophagus, while the assignment test based on the canonical variate analysis suggested 70% of the three overlapping entities as separate units. To test their reproductive distinctness and to demonstrate potential hybridization, nuclear genetic data are needed.  相似文献

Pied Kingfishers fish by diving from hovering flight or from perches; the choice is influenced by location of the prey and the weather, especially wind speed. 40–50% of the dives into Lake Victoria were successful compared with 11% on the Kazinga Channel, near Lake Edward, but dives were made more frequently in the latter area.

Analysis of pellets from the northern shore of Lake Victoria showed the bulk of the adults' diet was composed of Haplochromis, 55–108 mm (median 80 mm) total length, but that Engraulicypris urgenteus. 40–64 mm (median 52 mm) total length was more important numerically. Flying termites, Macrotermes sp., were occasionally eaten in large numbers.

Size selection related to development determines the proportions of Huplochromis and Engraulicypris in the chick's diet. by comparison with the adult most bone consumed by the chick is digested. Two caged juveniles ate about 34.5 g of fresh fish daily, 45% of their post-absorptive weights. Wild birds may consume even more.  相似文献

Clove oil can be used as an anaesthetic in the handling of marine and freshwater fish. Few studies report on its use for periods up to 48 h, for example, under long‐distance transport conditions. This study tested the effect of different clove oil concentrations for 1–48 h on recovery and survival of the cichlid Haplochromis obliquidens, an ornamental fish species endemic to Lake Victoria. Haplochromis obliquidens were anaesthetized for 1 h using 5–25 μl L?1 clove oil. There was no correlation between clove oil concentration and post‐anaesthesia recovery time (P = 0.15). On average, fish recovered within 9.5 ± 2 min, and no fish died within 24 h after recovery. Results from exposure of fish to 18–20 μl L?1 clove oil for up to 48 h suggested a narrow margin of safety as this concentration range induced mortality. At 18 μl L?1 recovery times ranged from 3 to 43 min between 24 and 36 h exposure, while fish exposed longer than 36 h recovered within 1–10 min, or within 1–2 min after 44–48 h. At the end of a 48‐h transport experiment total ammonia levels were higher in transport water containing anaesthetized fish than for non‐anaesthetized fish (1.65 ± 0.19 and 0.54 ± 0.08 mg L?1 NH + NH3, respectively). The combined use of clove oil and the selective ammonium ion exchanger zeolite was considered feasible as ammonia levels could be reduced by up to 82% compared to control bags without zeolite.  相似文献

The introduction of invasive Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and the rapacious predator Nile perch (Lates niloticus), into Lake Victoria resulted in a decline in population sizes, genetic diversity and even extirpation of native species which were previously the mainstay of local fisheries. However, remnant populations of native fish species, including tilapia, still persist in satellite lakes around Lake Victoria where they may coexist with O. niloticus. In this study we assessed population genetic structure, diversity, and integrity of the native critically endangered Singidia tilapia (O. esculentus) in its refugial populations in the Yala swamp, Kenya, and contrasted this diversity with populations of the invasive tilapia O. niloticus in satellite lakes (Kanyaboli, Namboyo and Sare) and Lake Victoria. Based on mtDNA control region sequences and eight nuclear microsatellite loci, we did not detect any mtDNA introgression between the native and the invasive species in Lakes Kanyaboli and Namboyo, but did find low levels of nuclear admixture, primarily from O. niloticus to O. esculentus. Some genetic signal of O. esculentus in O. niloticus was found in Lake Sare, where O. esculentus is not found, suggesting it has recently been extirpated by the O. niloticus invasion. In both species, populations in the satellite lakes are significantly genetically isolated from each other, with private mtDNA haplotypes and microsatellite alleles. For O. niloticus, genetic diversity in satellite lakes was similar to that found in Lake Victoria. Our data imply a low frequency of immigration exchange between the two populations of O. esculentus and we suggest that the populations of this endangered species and important fisheries resource should be conserved separately in Lakes Kanyaboli and Namboyo and with high priority.  相似文献

The Lake Victoria Cichlid fishes have diverged very rapidly. The estimated 500 species inhabiting the lake are believed to have arisen within the last 14,000 years. The fishes' jaws and teeth have diverged markedly to adapt to different feeding behaviors and environments. To examine how the genomes of these fishes differentiated during speciation, we performed comparative analysis of expressed sequenced tag (EST) sequences. We constructed cDNA libraries derived only from the jaw portions of two cichlid species endemic to Lake Victoria. We sequenced 17,280 cDNA clones from Haplochromis chilotes and 9600 cDNA clones from Haplochromis sp. "Redtailsheller" and obtained 543 different genes common to both species. Of these genes, 441 were essentially identical between species and 102 contained base replacements in their open reading frame (ORF) or untranslated (UTR) regions. Comparative analysis of 71 selected sequences has revealed that while the degree of polymorphism is 0.0054/site for H. chilotes and 0.0047/site for H. sp. "Redtailsheller", genetic distance between the two species is 0.0031/site. The genetic distance particularly indicates that the two species diverged about 890,000 years ago.  相似文献

The complex geological history of East Africa has been a driving factor in the rapid evolution of teleost biodiversity. While there is some understanding of how macroevolutionary drivers have shaped teleost speciation in East Africa, there is a paucity of research into how the same biogeographical factors have affected microevolutionary processes within lakes and rivers. To address this deficiency, population genetic diversity, demography, and structure were investigated in a widely distributed and migratory (potamodromous) African teleost species, Ssemutundu (Bagrus docmak ). Samples were acquired from five geographical locations in East Africa within two major drainage basins; the Albertine Rift and Lake Victoria Basin. Individuals (N  = 175) were genotyped at 12 microsatellite loci and 93 individuals sequenced at the mitochondrial DNA control region. Results suggested populations from Lakes Edward and Victoria had undergone a severe historic bottleneck resulting in very low nucleotide diversity (π = 0.004 and 0.006, respectively) and negatively significant Fu values (?3.769 and ?5.049; p  < .05). Heterozygosity deficiencies and restricted effective population size (N eLD) suggested contemporary exposure of these populations to stress, consistent with reports of the species decline in the East African Region. High genetic structuring between drainages was detected at both historical (?ST = 0.62 for mtDNA; p  < .001) and contemporary (microsatellite F ST = 0.460; p  < .001) levels. Patterns of low genetic diversity and strong population structure revealed are consistent with speciation patterns that have been linked to the complex biogeography of East Africa, suggesting that these biogeographical features have operated as both macro‐ and micro‐evolutionary forces in the formation of the East African teleost fauna.  相似文献

Lake Nabugabo was a big bay of Lake Victoria before being separated from the latter by a sand bar about 4000 years ago. Whereas conductivity of Lake Victoria is 100 μScm−1 that of Nabugabo has been less than 30 μ cm−2 since the Cambridge Scientific Expedition, 1962. Dissolved calcium carbonate is below detectable levels although nitrate and phosphate are not significantly different from those of Lake Victoria. However, the total cations and anions are five times more in Lake Victoria than Nabugabo. Along the eastern, southern and south‐western margins of the lake is an emergent swamp composed of different types of plants. In most places, Miscanthidium violaceum forms a floating platform of matted roots and rhizomes which border the open lake; it is associated with Sphagnum, a type of moss which normally grows in acidic and low‐temperature conditions at very high altitudes and latitudes. Because of the presence of this moss, the Nabugabo swamps are sometimes called ‘Sphagnum swamps’. Vossia cuspidata (hippo grass) is yet another emergent swamp plant in Lake Nabugabo, occurring in a number of isolated narrow mats stretching from a few metres to 0.5 km or longer along the edge of the emergent swamp. These floating mats are firmly anchored to the Micanthidium platform. Cyperus latifolia is another emergent‐floating plant in Lake Nabugabo firmly anchored on to the Miscanthidium platform. Cyperus latifolia and V. cuspidata tend to grow side by side but in completely sheltered bays the former plant grows alone. Cyperus papyrus L. occurs in very few patches within the emergent swamp. In the interface zone along the emergent swamp, there are a number of euhydrophyte plant species: Nymphaea caerulea is the most dominant and widespread euhydrophyte species except in the eastern tip of the lake where it is replaced by Nymphaea lotus; interspersed among these lilies is Ceratophyllum demersum in certain bays which could either be water inlets or out‐flows; Utricularia andNymphoides indica are associated with monospecific stand of N. caerulea in the south‐western end of the zone.  相似文献

Synopsis Nile perch, Lates niloticus, and Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were originally transplanted from Lake Albert in western Uganda to the African Great Lakes, Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga, where they are partially implicated in reduction of the fish species diversity. Lake Albert is facing multiple environmental changes, including declining fish species diversity, hyper-eutrophication, hypoxia, and reduced fish catches. To examine the role of Nile perch and Nile tilapia in the food web in their native Lake Albert, we estimated their diets using stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes. In Lake Albert, the tilapiine congeners (closely related species), Tilapia zillii, Oreochromis leucostictus, and Sarethorodon galilaeus, and the centropomid Nile perch congener, Lates macrophthalmus, have narrower diet breath in the presence of the native O. niloticus and L. niloticus. A computerized parameter search of dietary items for five commercially important fish species (Hydrocynus forskahlii, Bagrus bayad, L. niloticus, Alestes baremose and Brycinus nurse) was completed using a static isotopic mixing model. The outcome of the simulation for most fish species compared favorably to previously published stomach contents data for the Lake Albert fishes dating back to 1928, demonstrating agreement between stable isotope values and analyses of stomach contents. While there were some indications of changes in the diets of L. niloticus and A. baremose diets over the past 20 years in parallel with other changes in the lake, for the most part, food web structure in this lake remained stable since 1928. The Lake Albert fish assemblage provides insight into the invasion success of L. niloticus and O. niloticus.  相似文献
