The biology of young grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L. populations of a coastal lagoon—the Negombo Lagoon on the West Coast of Sri Lanka was studied from October 1976 to March 1978. The relative abundance of fry were found to vary from month to month, with peaks occurring in December-January, May and September-October, coinciding with the end of rainy seasons. It was found that the young fry tended to migrate into the lagoon at a size of about 10–20 mm, most frequently between 15–20 mm in length, by which time they were fully scaled. The young fry after a period of growth in the shallow areas of the lagoon, when they reached a size of 30–35 mm, emigrated into the deeper waters of the lagoon. The rate of growth, as computed from length frequency distribution studies, was found to be around 0.24 mm day−1. Results of diurnal surveys showed a movement of the larger size fry into shallower waters during the hours of darkness and this movement appears to be independent of the tidal cycle. It is postulated that the cause of this migration is to escape from predators, chiefly piscine. Investigations of the meristic characters indicated that the young fry which migrated into the lagoon at different times of the year probably originated from a single spawning stock.  相似文献

The population parameters (morphometrics, population size and biomass) were determined for leopard and angulate tortoises in the Thicket Biome, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Leopard tortoises had a mean total length of 306.47mm (SD = 94.65mm, range 59–496mm, n = 89). Males were smaller (mean total length 277.31mm, SD = 71.85mm, range 73–377mm, n = 36) than females (mean total length = 332.33mm, SD = 97.64mm, range 59–496mm, n = 53). Angulate tortoises had a mean total length of 155.17mm (SD = 33.89mm, range 59–194mm, n = 18). Males were larger (mean total length = 186mm, SD = 8.40mm, range 174–194mm, n = 5) than females (mean total length = 143.31mm, SD = 32.48mm, range 59–178mm, n = 13). The estimated population density for leopard tortoises was 0.85 tortoises ha−1 with an estimated biomass of 6.02kg −1. Angulate tortoise population density was estimated at 0.12 tortoises ha−1 with a mean biomass of 0.06kg ha−1. The possible consequences of this high density and biomass are discussed.  相似文献

The eel genus Histiobranchus Gill occurs benthopelagically over the continental rise and abyss of the World Ocean, primarily beneath temperate and subpolar surface waters. Its generic status within the subfamily Synaphobranchinae is confirmed by comparison of the structure and topography of its cephalic sensory system and skeletal features with Synaphobranchus. At least three species of Histiobranchus are recognized: H. bathybius (panoceanic), H. bruuni (Tasman Sea and waters south-east of New Zealand) and H. australis (two geographical forms; South Atlantic and south-western Indian Ocean, and South Indo-West Pacific Oceans). Collections totalling 319 specimens of H. bathybius from the eastern North Atlantic (1790–5440 m depth) yielded a size range of 99–1370 mm total length ( L T), with no apparent sexual dimorphism. Length–frequency distributions indicate a mode of juvenile fish at around 100–200 mm L T and a further two around 600–700 and 1300–1400 mm L T among adults. Generally smaller fish occur in shallower regions, although the size range is broad over the whole depth range. No apparent trend occurs in the size distribution with latitude over the range 17–54) N. Females outnumber males (1 male : 1·7 females) and both sexes are largely distinguishable from 300 mm L T. Ripening eggs occur in females from both adult length modes, with running ripe and spent females of very different size indicating iteroparity.  相似文献

The ability of juvenile plaice (18–190 mm) to bury in sands varying in grain size from 0.062–2 mm was examined. For fish greater than approximately 30 mm in length the relationship between the proportion of the body covered with sand ( C ), total length ( L , mm) and grain size ( S , mm) can be estimated from the equation: logit C = 3.250 + 0.069 L – 6.771 S . Based on their performance in coarser sediments, fish smaller than approximately 30 mm did not bury as well as expected in the finest sediments (0.062 and 0.125 mm).  相似文献

SUMMARY. The rate of gastric evacuation in perch (Perca fluviatilis) (89–170 mm length) fed on fish larvae was studied at temperatures between 12.0 and 21.7°C. Gastric evacuation rates were usually described by an exponential function. The instantaneous rate of gastric evacuation ( R ) was constant for a large number of different meal sizes. At higher food rations, a lag phase in digestion was found during the first part of digestion, and this ration size was smaller for smaller perch (89–110 mm) than for bigger perch (120–170 mm). Below these larger meal sizes, gastric evacuation was similar for the different size classes studied. The relation between R and temperature was described by an exponential function. The effects of meal size, number of food items, fish size and temperature on the rate of gastric evacuation are discussed.  相似文献

Five variously developed embryos [142–279 mm total length (LT)] from egg capsules from the Porcupine Seabight, north-eastern Atlantic (1541 m depth) are used to establish the ontogeny and early life history of Bathyraja richardsoni. The capsules of this species and two half-formed ones from the shell glands of a large (1620 mm LT) female Bathyraja pallida taken off Ireland (c. 1900 m depth) are described and illustrated. The varying degree of yolk sac absorption found in the B. richardsoni embryos is discussed in relation to hatching size and its seeming size independence over c. 20–50 mm within the embryos' total length range. The conservative variation in external morphology with development from advanced embryos to adults among such deep stenobathic Bathyraja skates is commented upon, as is the bathymetric segregation of adults from levels in which egg capsules are deposited and young develop.  相似文献

In order to study the relative growth of the pearl oyster Pinctada radiata in Tunisia, a total of 330 individuals of this species were collected from six sites along the Tunisian coastline. Quantitative measurements of collected oysters were conducted for shell height, shell length, shell width, hinge length, height and width of the nacreous part and wet weight. The size structure of the sampled populations was described and the relative growth between different morphometric characteristics was estimated as allometric growth lines for the six P. radiata samples. It appeared that the majority of examined samples were dominated by large individuals that exceed a shell height of 42 mm. The maximum size (100.5 mm), recorded in Bizerta lagoon, is bigger than that recorded elsewhere in particular in the Red Sea. Size distribution analysis also showed that the majority of P. radiata samples were dominated by two or more size groups. Differences of allometric regression were found between the examined samples for the tested relationships. Moreover, the Factorial Discriminant Analysis, coupled with Ascending Hierarchic Classification, classified the sub-populations according to geographic locations.  相似文献

Notropis longirostris (Hay), the longnose shiner, in Catahoula Creek, Jourdan River drainage, Hancock County, Mississippi, was studied from May 1970 to May 1972. In 1971 reproduction occurred from late March into October, as indicated by gross examination of testes, breeding tubercles and breeding colour in males, and ovarian weights, measurements of ova, and gross examination of ovaries in females. Gross examination of ovaries in 1970 also indicated an extended reproductive season. Generally no significant differences from a 1 : 1 sex ratio or in the size of males and females in collections taken during the reproductive season were indicated. Males and females matured about the same size. Most females were sexually mature when 29–30 mm SL. The smallest female with mature ova was 28 mm; however, the majority of females did not have mature ova until 31–33 mm. The number of mature ova produced prior to spawning ranged from 15 to 129 for females 30.8–44 mm SL. There were significant differences in the number of mature ova with time, two peaks being indicated: the first in late March and April at the beginning of the reproductive period and the second in early July about the middle of the season. This conclusion is also supported by ovarian weight measurements and length frequency histograms. The mean diameters of mature ova ranged from 0.70–1.05 mm, averaging 0.90 mm, and were not significantly correlated with length. Most fish live about 1–1.5 years and do not live through two winters, indicating an annual turnover in the population. Maximum size was about 48 mm SL. Specific characteristics of the life history pattern of N. longirostris are discussed in relation to ecological conditions of the habitat.  相似文献

Craterocephalus sp. nov. showed sexual dimorphism in body shape during the breeding season. Pairing occurred during daylight with a single release of eggs amongst submerged vegetation between sunrise and the early afternoon on the same day. The eggs were demersal, adhesive, spherical (0.87–0.96 mm diameter) and had 12 adhesive filaments (0.5–1.5 mm long) at the animal pole. Approximately 24 oil droplets (0.02–0.08 mm diameter) persisted throughout egg and larval development. Hatching occurred 155–160 h after spawning at 25–27° C.
The yolk-sac larvae were 3.85–3.95 mm notochord length at hatching and began feeding at the surface after absorption of the yolk (3–12 h after hatching). All fin rays were developed in 9.4 mm standard length fry, which moved from midwater to feed on the substrate. Aquarium reared fish first spawned at 30 mm s.L. when 165 days of age.

The living terebratulid articulate brachiopod Liothyrella uva (Jackson 1912) was sampled from a shallow water population at Signy Island, South Orkney Islands, Antarctica. Neither shell height nor shell breadth were directly proportional to length and as a result there was a change in shell shape with size (and hence age); this change was small but statistically significant. The proportion of the total organic matter found in the shell and internal (mantle) tissues also changed with size. In small (5–7 mm length) brachiopods 70–80% of the total organic matter was located within the shell; this fraction decreased with increasing size until above about 25 mm length the proportion of organic matter in the shell was constant at 30–45%. Variability in this measure was influenced by infection with endolithic red algae. Punctal density was independent of size with a mean value of 95.7 per mm2 [SE (standard error) ± 2.2], which was greater than in populations sampled from higher latitudes. With increasing shell length there was a slight increase in the size of puncta close to the shell edge. In all morphometric measures the range of variation observed was similar to that described from populations of Liothyrella from other areas of the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Arctic char ( Salvelinus alpinus ) living in allopatry in lakes often show a distinct size dimorphism where the large char prey upon small char. We studied the relationship between size scaling of energy intake, total metabolic costs and levels of storage energy related to the niche shift from invertebrate feeding to cannibalism in an alpine Arctic char population. Gill-net samples consisted of two distinct size modes, small invertebrate feeding char (92–172 mm total length) and large cannibalistic char (265–606 mm total length). Food consumption was estimated for a one year period using a radioactive tracer (137Cs). The energy intake followed a hump-shaped relationship with fish size for invertebrate feeding char and increased monotonically with size for cannibalistic char. Total metabolic costs increased exponentially with size for both groups. Char feeding in the invertebrate niche had a maximum net energy gain at 140 mm total length with an upper size limit for positive net energy gain at 180 mm. For cannibals the relationship between size and net energy gain formed a hump shaped function with maximum net energy gain at 400 mm and a lower size limit for positive net energy gain at 230 mm. The size at maturation for both small and large char was close to the size for maximum energy gain in their respective niches. Immature individuals close to the upper size limit for positive net energy gain in the invertebrate niche had low levels of storage lipids but tended to have high mass specific growth rates. This may imply a reallocation from reversible (stored) energy to structural (length) growth as a strategy to transform into the size-range where the cannibalistic niche successfully could be exploited.  相似文献

Metamorphosis in cod, Gadus morhua L., was investigated with respect to morphological changes in the alimentary tract (mouth, stomach and pyloric caeca) and external characters (finfold and fin development). Morphometric measurements and histological investigations were made on both larvae and juveniles and all fish lengths are given as standard length. Median unpaired fins started to develop when the fish were 9–10 mm in length. The larval median finfold was resorbed when fish reached a size of 11–15 mm. The vertebrae were formed in fish of 11–20 mm. The supraterminal mouth, seen in larvae <12 mm, changed gradually to a sub-terminal position in juveniles larger than 65 mm. The development of the stomach and pyloric caeca started at 15 mm and the juvenile form was seen in fish of 40 mm. The ability to store and grind food particles in the stomach developed gradually as fish increased in size from 20 to 40 mm. Compared to many other teleost species, cod juveniles are relatively large when the stomach and pyloric caeca become fully developed. These findings may have important implications for both start-feeding of cod larvae and the weaning of juveniles on to artificial diets.  相似文献

This paper reports on the studies on growth of juveniles, 20–140 mm in length, of Cynoscion striatus in the sea and in aquaria. The monthly growth of these juveniles in the sea was determined by means of the analysis of length-frequency distributions of 5500 individuals throughout the year. Fish in aquaria were measured and weighed every two weeks, and were fed on known amounts of food. The relationship between the length and the weight of fish, and between the length, width and thickness of the otoliths and the length of fish were calculated and were expressed as exponential functions. On the basis of the analysis of length-frequency distributions and of back calculations it was determined that the formation of the first annulus in the otoliths of juveniles of this species occurs in specimens of 45–100 mm in length and of 1.16–10.0 g in weight. In the majority of the individuals the first annual ring was formed at a size of about 70–80 mm. In juveniles of 79–102 mm, at a temperature of 15–22° C, the maintenance requirement was 0.189 g, and the gross efficiency is 0.310 g of shrimp per gram fish per week. The efficiency of food conversion is high, its value being of 18.8%. The increment in length in these juveniles was 2.01 mm per week and the increment in weight was 0.896 g per week.  相似文献

The ontogeny of the digestive system of cobia Rachycentron canadum from hatching to 22 days post-hatch (dph) (20·1 mm standard length) was examined with light microscopy. The activities of selected pancreatic enzymes were also determined during this period in order to optimize current rearing methods for this species. At hatching (3·6 mm), the digestive tract consisted of a relatively undifferentiated, straight tube positioned dorsally to the yolk sac. The major morphological changes in the digestive tract primarily occurred over the first 1–4 dph (3·6–4·4 mm). During this time, larvae began exogenous feeding (3 dph) and the digestive tract differentiated into five histologically distinct regions: buccopharynx, oesophagus, stomach anlage, anterior intestine and posterior intestine. Yolk reserves were exhausted by 5 dph (4·5 mm) and the oil globule began rapidly decreasing in size disappearing entirely by 9–10 dph (6·3–6·8 mm). Gastric glands differentiated at this time, and by 12 dph (8·1 mm) surface mucous cells of the stomach anlage stained positive for neutral mucosubstances. By 16 dph (11·6 mm), the blind sac (fundic region) of the stomach formed as did the pyloric caecae which initially appeared as a single protrusion of the anterior intestine just ventral to the pyloric sphincter. Generally, enzyme activities (U larva−1) for amylase (0·0–1·8), chymotrypsin (0·0–7902·4), trypsin (0·2–16·6) and lipase (9·3–1319·0) were measurable at or soon after hatching and increased steadily from c. 8–22 dph (5·7–20·1 mm). The results of this study are discussed in terms of current and future weaning practices of this species.  相似文献

Spawning of the Hawaiian coral-reef goby Asterropteryx semipunctata was diurnal, occurring at various times throughout the day. Mean length of eggs deposited in nests was 0·76 mm (range 0·67–0·84); mean egg width was 0·47 mm (range 0·41–0·52). Clutch size varied from 296 to 1552 eggs (mean=886±309), and was independent of standard length, total body weight, and body condition. Mean relative clutch size was 1·59 eggs mg-1 total body weight (range 0·84–2·43). Clutches hatched 4–5 nights after being deposited in a nest. Mean notochord length of newly-hatched larvae was 1·88 mm (range 1·60–2·04). The minimum period of time that elapsed between egg deposition and subsequent growth of a new batch of oocytes to spawning size was 5–6 days, providing a reasonable estimate of minimum spawning interval. Compared with other gobiids, tropical species tend to have shorter incubation periods, smaller eggs and smaller larvae at hatching.  相似文献

A new species, Astragalus himachalensis , is described and illustrated from the Himalaya in India. The species grows occasionally in different parts of the cold desert of Lahul-Spiti (Himachal Pradesh). It resembles A. himalayanus , but differs chiefly in the small size of the plants (length, 5–15 cm), diadelphous stamens, and small pods (length, 5–6 mm) with the stipe length (2–3 mm) more or less equal to the calyx length. The similarities and significant differences between A. himachalensis and A. himalayanus were confirmed by analyses of random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and directed amplification of minisatellite DNA (DAMD) markers. The abundance, population structure, and growth of the Pen-shell Atrina maura in the Corralero-Alotengo tropical lagoon system in Oaxaca, Mexico, were studied from February to September of 1997. An abundance analysis showed significant temporal and spatial differences (Kruskal-Wallis, p < 0.001). Two spatial groups of abundance were found in the area, one from the mouth of the lagoon system to the middle of the Pen-shell bank, and the other between the middle of the Pen-shell bank and the head of the system. Three temporal periods of abundance were found (February-April-May; July-August; March-June-September). The distribution of population size showed that benthic recruitment of A. maura occurred from February to July. Length frequency of A. maura is commonly wide-ranging; nevertheless, in this study Pen-shell organisms with a valve length of 15 cm were frequently found. The growth rate length was 3.7 cm/month during the dry season (February to May), and 3.5 cm/month during the rainy season (June to September). Sex ratio was maintained at 1:1 from February to May, but males were dominant from June to August, and the minimum length for reproduction was registered at 10 cm valve length.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Between 1967 and 1977, catches of Tilapia galilaea in Lake Kinneret fell from an annual average of about 200 tonnes to a low of 70 tonnes in 1974, and then returned to their former level. Total yearly mortality ( Z ) was estimated at 1.84 between 1970 and 1976. Assuming a natural mortality ( M ) of 0.94, total stock size averaged 300–700 tonnes in that period, while recruitment averaged < 0.7–3 million per year. Three broods hatched in years of relatively high water levels (1970, 1971 and 1972) yielded especially low recruitment.
The Von Bertalanffy growth coefficient ( K ) was estimated at 0.67, and final length (L∞) at 25–36cm total length. First year's growth, 23–152mm, was closely related to final length, which appeared to be affected by genetic variation in the population. Yearly fluctuations in size distribution were attributed to changes in the proportions of fast- and slow-growers, as well as in the abundance of year-classes. Recruitment to the fishery, at 17–20cm, occurred between ages l+and3+.
The highest growth rates for age-1 T, galilaea , 1–2% mean weight per day, occurred in April and May, the Peridinium season. However, only a small proportion of age-1 fish reached marketable size by July, when their food supply began to diminish. During the autumn months, there was hardly any length increment, and all T. galilaea became lean, especially the age-0 group. It is surmised that recruitment of stocked fish could be increased by introduction in December and by use of fingerlings which are potentially able to grow to marketable size in less than two seasons.  相似文献

Upper lethal temperature tolerance was determined for 26–81 mm, age 0 black crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus of three size classes using both a rapid transfer and slow heating protocol. Rapid transfer protocols determined 24 LT50 values of 33–8, 35–1 and 31–5° C for size classes with mean total lengths of 30–2, 45–6 and 74–9 mm. A predictive model was generated from the slow heating protocols that relates lethal temperature to acclimation temperature, total length, and condition factor (K) as predictors.  相似文献
