Emergence and seasonal regulation of the dragonfly Onychogomphus costae Selys, 1885, were surveyed thoroughly during two consecutive years from two nearby stretches upstream the Seybouse River, northeastern Algeria. The emergence season started in mid-May and lasted 68 and 58 days showing a peak in late May and early June in 2011 and 2012, respectively. During the two years 2011 and 2012, 50% of annual emergence occurred after 25 and 22 days, respectively. Sex ratio was slightly but not significantly male biased. Female exuviae were recorded at higher height than males. Height of the exuviae fixation was positively correlated to support height and head width. Percentage mortality at emergence was mainly due to deformity and predation counting from 7.9% to 9.15% of the total emergent population. The species seasonal regulation is inferred and discussed based on the emergence temporal pattern and larval development.  相似文献

Summary Nest usurpation in the subtropical paper waspRopalidia fasciata was studied in Okinawa, southern Japan. Eight of 14 usurpations occurred around the first worker emergence (within 3 days before and 3 days after the emergence). A discriminant analysis showed that the usurpers preferred colonies that had fewer adult females and fewer cells but abundant pupae, compared with non-usurped colonies in the study area on same dates. This suggests that usurpers can assess the development of other colonies and then select a nest that is easy to usurp (fewer females) but has valuable resources (abundant pupae).  相似文献

Trajectories of maize nodal roots were studied to test the hypothesis that roots which appear on a common internode have similar geometrical characteristics, and to assess the effect of soil temperature on root trajectory. Treatments consisted of three sowing dates, a comparison between mulched and non-mulched soil, a replication of one sowing date for two years in two locations, and a comparison between two cultivars at one sowing date. All these sources of variation, except the cultivar, had an appreciable effect on the trajectories of roots which appeared on the first four internodes. The horizontal component of the trajectory differed significantly between treatments, ranging from 93 to 700 mm in roots which appeared on the second internode, and from 71 to 569 for those on the third internode. The original hypothesis had, therefore, to be rejected. Mean soil temperature during the 100°C.days after root appearance accounted for the differences in trajectory between location, year, sowing date and mulch treatments, and for the differences between internodes within each location. The critical period during which temperature affected root trajectory probably began at root appearance, and ended between 50 and 100°C days after root appearance, i.e. when the root was less than 100 mm long.  相似文献

Individual size is an important factor that determines fitness in annual plants. Variation in size originates at the seedling stage based on differences in seedling vigour and time of emergence, ensuing asymmetrical intraspecific competition between early- and late-established plants. The effects of the order of seedling emergence on characteristics of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) were studied. In the first experiment, competition between pairs of plants, one of which was sown and emerged 0, 3, 6 or 12 days earlier than the other, was determined. In the second experiment, competition between two plants that were sown at the same time, but emerged at different times because of variation in seed quality, was determined. Competition decreased plant mass, tillering, height and the number of caryopses per panicle, but not time to earing or root/shoot ratio. Plants that were sown 3 days after the first plants in competing pairs grew to 32% of the size of solitary control plants, with the effect of competition accounting for 40% and asymmetrical competition 28% of the total reduction in size. When a 3-day lag in germination was determined intrinsically, plant size was reduced to 19% of the control, with the effect of competition accounting for 34%, asymmetrical competition 15% and poor intrinsic quality of the plant 32% of the total reduction in size. Small environmentally induced delays and more importantly, intrinsically induced delays in the time of emergence result in a considerable decrease in final plant size and fitness.  相似文献

The seasonal changes in leaf emergence and leaf-fall in a Japanese alder stand of the fen in Kushiro Marsh were studied, and survival curves for the leaves were drawn. Leaves collected in litter traps were dried and weighed to study the seasonal changes, peaks in mid-August and late September to October suggested a bimodal annual curve. Study of the seasonal changes in the number of emerged and fallen leaves per shoot revealed a third peak about one month before the August peak, showing a trimodal annual curve. First and second leaves had a longevity of about 40 and 50–60 days, respectively. The longevity increased until the fifth leaf. With the sixth and following leaves, longevity decreased. Leaf size increased with leaf rank, with the first leaf being the smallest. The first leaf had only about 10% and the second leaf only 20% of the area of the fifth leaf. On this basis, the early to mid-July peak in number of fallen leaves was composed of first and second leaves which were smaller and short-lived. The early August and September/October peaks were high in both number and mass of fallen leaves. Compared to reports on Japanese alder of other mountainous districts in Hokkaido, the alder trees of Kushiro Marsh had about the same number of leaves per shoot, but had a season of leaf emergence which was about 6 weeks shorter. In addition, the longevity of the longest-lived fifth leaf was about 30–40 days shorter. The short life span of the leaves could be considered as an adaptive strategy of this species to environmental constraints of its habitat.  相似文献

From 1967 to 1971, wheat bulb fly females caught by sweeping from a number of localities contained mature eggs from the third week of July to the end of August. In 1971 when female wheat bulb flies were caught by sweeping, by white water traps, by suction traps as well as by light traps, the first flies containing mature eggs were caught 29 days after the first detected emergence while the first batch was laid 29–58 days after first emergence. The peak period of egg laying occurred in the fourth week of July, 24–38 days after the peak emergence. The second batch of eggs was laid when the flies were 8 weeks old, 29 days after the first; the peak for this batch was 35 days after the first. A few females laid a third batch of eggs 28 days after the first record of the laying of the second batch. A female that lives sufficiently long to lay the third batch of eggs is at least 12 weeks old. In 1970, when emergence started earlier in June, ripening and laying of eggs of the three batches was also earlier. After the harvest of cereal crops more females were caught by white water traps placed on the fallow than by other methods. The most important pathogen affecting adult wheat bulb flies was a fungus, probably Entomophthora muscae. When infection occurred early in July, fewer eggs from the first batch were laid than when infection developed later. Fewer flies were infected in 1971 than in 1970. To be effective against wheat bulb fly in the early spring, control measures-should be applied against adults before their eggs mature in early July of the preceding year.  相似文献

Abstract. The development of seedlings of the miombo tree (Julbernardia globiflora) was studied for 28 months (December 1987 - April 1990) at a Zambian grassland site from which fire has been excluded for many years. Germination occurred 10–25 days after seed planting and germination rates under laboratory and field conditions did not differ significantly. Seed germinability after one year of storage declined to 38 %. Leaf production occurred between December and April with peaks in January each year. Leaf fall occurred steadily throughout the dry season but leafless seedlings were first observed in August of each year. All seedlings had shed all their leaves by the end of November during the first year while 10% of the seedlings remained leafy throughout the second year. Annual seedling mortality was about 60 % during the first year and declined to 3 6 % during the second year. Survivorship appeared to stabilise at 3 8 % when seedlings were 5 5 - 5 9 weeks old. Every seedling experienced shoot die-back during the first hot dry season (September - November) when open-pan evaporation rates averaged 5–10 mm / day. However, shoot mortality did not necessarily result in plant mortality. Because of recurrent shoot die-back there was little increase in shoot biomass and height at the end of the second and third growing seasons. Seedlings that survived shoot die-back sprouted from roots which showed a steady annual accumulation of biomass. Early shoot die-back in seedlings of Julbernardia globiflora as documented in this study was not causedby fire but most probably by drought and / or nutritional stress.  相似文献

Indigenous Sorghum species are a prominent feature of the seasonally-dry tropics of north-west Australia. Studies of the dormancy characteristics of these species were undertaken, and measurements of seedling emergence, of plant survival, growth and reproductive success, and of seed bank changes were made for one Sorghum intrans population and for three S. stipoideum populations over two growing seasons. On wetting, 90% of the non-dormant, viable seeds of nil species germinated within five days. The temperature range for optimal germination was 25 - 35°C, and germination declined with decreasing water potential. The seeds of all species had high innate dormancy at seedfall, and this was broken down over the ensuing dry season. For S. intrans and S. stipoideum height and tiller number increased steadily after emergence up to the time of floral initiation, which occurred simultaneously for primary tillers within each population. Most vegetative tillers died after this leaving a single reproductive culm which rapidly elongated to reach 1 – 4 mat maturity, depending on site and season. Seedfall occurred over a short, c. two-week period before the rainy season had finished. Seeds were dispersed within 2 m of the parent plant. Seeds were buried to less than 2 cm by the screwing action of their hygroscopically-active awns. All these annual Sorghum species appear to have transient seedbanks, formed at seedfall near the end of one rainy season and exhausted by germination following the first rains of the next annual rainy season. We suggest that S. intrans and S. stipoideum persist despite this feature because they mature at the earliest time that the rainy season has been known to end in their respective localities. Persistence is further aided by adaptations which enable individuals to survive the unpredictable short droughts which occur while they are emerging and growing. S. intrans and S. stipoideum have low fecundity (mean ? 8 viable seeds per individual) and high survivorship. They fit Watkinson's (1981) schema relating fecundity to survival for annuals with transient seed banks.  相似文献

Summary We studied the reproductive success of female Columbian ground squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus) in southwestern Alberta for nine years. We defined reproductive success as the number of offspring surviving their first hibernation, classified as yearlings. The number of weaned juveniles explained one third of the variance in number of yearlings at emergence from their first hibernation the following spring, and much of the variance in individual reproductive success originated after weaning. Weight of adult females at emergence from hibernation was correlated with annual reproductive success. The mother's survival beyond weaning and the subsequent winter's snow accumulation had positive effects on annual reproductive success, whereas population density and summer temperature had negative effects. We found no effects on annual reproductive success of date of litter emergence, weight at emergence as a yearling, presence or absence of adult kin, distance from the natal site, location within the study area, winter temperature or summer precipitation. Age of first breeding did not affect lifetime reproductive success, which ranged from 0 to 19 yearlings produced over a lifetime. The greatest source of variation in lifetime reproductive success for females surviving to breeding age was offspring survival, followed by reproductive lifespan.  相似文献

The life history and demography of Amblyseius longispinosus Evans were studied under laboratory conditions 25–28°C and 65–85% RH using the red form of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch complex as prey. The entire development from egg to adult averaged 102.5 h for both sexes with a survival rate of 90.0%. Immature females consumed more prey eggs than males, averaging 7.9 and 6.4 eggs/day, respectively. The embryonic development time for male eggs was longer (average 45.2 h) than for female eggs (average 42.6 h). The average duration of succeeding stages did not differ between the sexes: larva, 15.7; protonymph, 21.1; and deutonymph, 23.0 h. Larvae were not observed to feed. Statistically significant differences between sexes were noted with respect to consumption of the deutonymphs (female, average 4.0±0.2; male, average 2.9±0.3 eggs/day) but not of the protonymphs. Mating occurred on the same day as adult emergence and was repeated several times during the reproductive life. Egg laying started on the second day after emergence. Parameters relating to oviposition were: fecundity, gross (50.7) and net (43.3) eggs/female; hatchability, 99.6% (gross) and 99.5% (net); the oviposition lasted at most 28 days and showed a peak in the first week. Net reproductive rate (R0) was 36.7 female offspring/female/generation time (T) of 9.0 days. The sex ratio was biased toward the females (71.9%), while the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.4 with a doubling time (DT) of 1.7 days. Males lived longer (36 days) than females (30 days) with a LT50 for males of 26 days and for females of 22 days.  相似文献

Summary Drought resistance of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) as influenced by two vesiculararbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi,Glomus fasciculatum 10 andGlomus deserticola 19, was evaluated. Soil columns 0.15 m diam. by 1.20 m length were used to reduce the influence of limited rooting space. With initial soil water at 0.5 MPa (0.145 kg kg–1), plants were subjected to low-level water stress throughout the experiment and severe water stress for 24 h at one (55 days after transplanting, Feekes scale 10.1) two (55 and 63 days, Feekes 10.1 and 10.2), or three (55, 63, and 70 days, Feekes 10.1, 10.1, and 10.2) periods. After each stress period, one set of plants was watered and grown to maturity without subsequent water stress. A second set of plants was harvested 1 week after stress.G. fasciculatum-inoculated plants harvested 7 days after stress at 55 days had greater leaf area and leaf, total plant, and root weight than non-VAM plants.G. deserticola-inoculated plants had greater leaf area and leaf weight than non-VAM plants. After stress at 55 and 63 days, leaf area, and leaf and total dry weight were again greater for VAM than for non-VAM plants. However, after stress at 55, 63, and 70 days, differences in aboveground biomass between VAM and non-VAM plants were not significant at P=0.05. Aboveground biomass was not affected by VAM species in plants stressed at 55 or 55 and 63 days, butG. fasciculatum-inoculated plants produced more tillers atter stress at 55 days. When grown to maturity, VAM plants which had undergone three stress periods had twice the biomass and grain yield as non-VAM plants subjected to the same stress. The three stress periods reduced number of heads and kernel numbers of weight of non-VAM plants compared to VAM plants.G. fasciculatum-inoculated plants consistently had increased root weight and rooting depth.Contribution from the Agricultural Research Service, USDA, in cooperation with the Nebr. Many organisms with complex life cycles show considerable variation in size and timing at metamorphosis. Adult males of Megarcyssignata (Plecoptera: Perlodidae) are significantly smaller than females and emerge before females (protandry) from two western Colorado streams. During summer 1992 stoneflies from a trout stream emerged earlier in the season and at larger sizes than those from a colder fishless stream, and size at metamorphosis did not change over the emergence period in either stream. We performed two experiments to determine whether variation in size at metamorphosis affected the fecundity, reproductive success and longevity of individuals of this stonefly species and if total lifetime fecundity was affected by the number of matings. In the first experiment, total lifetime fecundity (eggs oviposited) was determined for adult females held in small plastic cages in the field. Males were removed after one copulation, or pairs were left together for life and allowed to multiply mate. Most copulations occurred in the first few days of the experiment. Females in treatments allowing multiple matings had significantly lower total lifetime fecundity and shorter adult longevity than females that only mated once. Multiple matings also reduced longevity of males. Fecundity increased significantly with female body mass at emergence, but only for females that mated once. While multiple matings eliminated the fecundity advantage of large female body size, number of matings did not affect the significant positive relationship between body mass at metamorphosis and longevity of males or females. In a second experiment designed to determine if body mass at emergence affected male mating success, we placed one large and one small male Megarcys in an observation arena containing one female and recorded which male obtained the first mating. The large and the small male had equal probabilities of copulating with the female. Copulations usually lasted all night, and the unmated male made frequent, but unsuccessful attempts to take over the copulating female. Our data suggest that selection pressures determining body size at metamorphosis may operate independently on males and females, resulting in evolution of sexual size dimorphism, protandry, and mating early in the adult stage. We emphasize the importance of interpreting the fitness consequences of larval growth and development on the timing of and size at metamorphosis in the context of the complete life cycle. The Cape Floristic Region and the Succulent Karoo in southwestern Africa are both noted for their plant species richness and high levels of endemism. The southwestern tip of Africa is one of the world's five Mediterranean-type climate regions. The biodiversity in the Cape Floristic Region and Succulent Karoo is thought to be at least partly due to changes to the climate of these regions that have occurred since the middle Miocene. Annual species are usually a significant proportion of local flora in Mediterranean-type climate regions. Previous studies of species radiations in the Cape Floristic Region have concentrated on genera that predominantly contain perennial species. Nemesia (Scrophulariaceae) comprises c. 65 species of annual and perennial herbs and sub-shrubs that are native to southern and tropical Africa. Annuals make up a significant proportion (~75%) of Nemesia species. We have reconstructed a phylogeny of 23 Nemesia species using nucleotide sequences of the ITS, ETS and trnL-spacer regions. Species were grouped into five clades, two composed of annual species, one that contained two annual and one perennial species, one that contained one annual and two perennial species, and one that was predominantly composed of perennial species. Phylogenetic dating of the ITS + ETS based phylogenetic tree using penalised likelihood suggested the genus evolved during the Miocene, and that the majority of extant Nemesia species studied radiated during the Pliocene. Ancestral state reconstruction supports at least three separate origins of the annual habit from plants with a perennial life history. One origin can be traced to the late Miocene while the other two transitions occurred more recently during the Pliocene. The transition from perennial to annual life-histories in Nemesia may have been a response to climate change.  相似文献

Summary Nine half-sib families of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aït.), of known vigor and growth pattern (monocyclic vs polycyclic), were grown under continuous light in two temperature regimes. Results of germination and development to the beginning of the second flush are reported here. Families significantly differed for mean date of germination and date of first budset. After 18 weeks of continuous light most of the seedlings had set a bud. High temperature (25° C vs 25° C/20°C) hastened first budset by approximately 5 days. However, 3 families had not reached 75% budset at the end of the experiment. Variation in date of first budset was almost exclusively explained by variation in the period between initiation of primary needles and budset. Further, 2 developmental stages could be distinguished within this period, the boundary between them being the emergence of the first secondary needles. Variation in height at first budset was mostly due to variation in growth rate, not in duration. Possible causes of early budset and implication for selection are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The annual development of the gonads of Dreissena polymorpha was studied at three sampling sites in two lakes over 3 and 1 1/2 years, respectively. A resting stage occurred after the last spawning in summer/autumn. Oogenesis (accompanied by multiplying segmentation of the oogonia and early growth processes of its oocytes) restarted in specimens at least 1 year old at low temperatures (below 10° C) during winter and early spring. At one location (Fühlinger See) the onset of the spawning season was correlated with an increase of water temperatures above 12° C. At 2 m depth, two main spawning periods in May and August were normally recognized, the first at temperatures of 12–16° C, the second at 16–21° C. It was clearly demonstrated for the first time in Dreissena polymorpha that the oocytes became mature in successive cohorts within one gonad. A female mussel may spawn several times during the reproductive season. At 9 m depth, the onset of spawning also started at about 12° C; this occurred in late summer, with two spawning periods within 1 month at a temperature range of 12–16° C. At another location (Heider Bergsee) the size of the gonads and the oocytes was reduced during April of both years studied, when food supply was low simultaneously with rapidly rising water temperatures in this shallow lake. There was no spawning period during spring. The major spawning period was delayed until July (temperatures 19–22°C). This shows (1) the synchronizing influence of low winter temperatures on the annual reproductive cycle and (2) a temperature threshold of at least 12° C for the start of the spawning processes. The results are discussed with regard to the geographical limits of further spread of Dreissena polymorpha.  相似文献

Photoperiodic stimulation of quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) resulted in the appearance of a nuclear fos-like protein within neurones of the basal tuberal hypothalamus. On transfer to long days the number of neurones containing this fos-like immunoreactivity increased from about 150 to 700, the neurones being scattered throughout the length of the tubero-infundibular complex. This activation had occurred by early in the second long day and was maintained for at least three long days. Over this period circulating levels of LH increased seven-fold, indicating that photoperiodic induction had taken place in the birds. A similar time-course of fos-like induction occurred in castrated quail exposed to a single long day and then returned to short days. Activation mirrored the long-term changes in LH secretion found in this paradigm and fos-like immunoreactivity showed the same carry-over characteristics of photoperiodic induction, being maximal two days after the quail had been exposed to the single long day (and were again on short days) and when LH secretion was at its maximum. Activation of fos-like immunoreactive cells did not take place when long-day quail were transferred to short photoperiods. The evidence supports the view that the neurones being activated are involved in a specific fashion in the avian photoperiodic response.  相似文献

The first 2-4 days after an Anopheles gambiae female mosquito emerges are critical to her survival and reproductive success. Yet, the order of behavioural events (mating, sugar feeding, blood feeding) during this time has received little attention. We discovered that among female cohorts sampled from emergence, sugar feeding had a higher probability than blood feeding of occurring first, and mating rarely occurred before a meal was taken. The night after emergence, 48% of females fed on sugar in mesocosms, and 25% fed on human blood; in the absence of sugar, 49% of females fed on human blood. After 5 days, 39% of the sugar-supplied females had blood fed and mated, and were fructose negative, whereas only 8% of the sugar-denied females had both blood fed and mated by this time. The model that best explained the transitions suggests that females made use of two distinct behavioural pathways, the most common one being to sugar-feed, then mate, and then seek blood. Other females sought blood first, then mated, and forwent a sugar meal. Lipid levels were higher in females with access to sugar than in females without access to sugar, particularly for those in later gonotrophic stages, while glycogen levels in the sugar-supplied group were higher throughout. In single-night experiments with females having had access to sucrose since emergence, those given a blood meal 1 day before spending a night with males had higher insemination rates than those not receiving the blood meal. These results indicate that the trade-off between survival and immediate reproduction is resolved by young adult females in accordance with availability of resources and gonotrophic state.  相似文献

Sexual receptivity in sugar-and-water-fed females of the anautogenous blowfly Lucilia cuprinawas low when they had been housed in groups but high when they had been housed singly. Females were completely unreceptive on the second and third days after emergence, irrespective of housing conditions. There after receptivity increased but more rapidly in the singly housed females. Experiments in which females were housed singly for some days and then in groups, or vice versa, showed that receptivity could be influenced by housing conditions experienced both over the first 5 days after emergence and later in life.  相似文献

The mating behavior of the quasi-gregarious egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) was investigated under field conditions. Trissolcus basalis has female-biased sex ratios and is a protandrous species, with males emerging 1–2 days before females. Males competed aggressively for control of the egg mass, with one male assuming dominance and control of the egg mass, although changes in dominance occurred at least once on each egg mass observed. Typical mating behavior involved the dominant male mating his sisters immediately upon their emergence from the egg mass. These behaviors are characteristic of an inbreeding species that manifests local mate competition. However, several aspects of the mating behavior of T. basalis are inconsistent with that of an inbreeding species. Over 18% of emerging females were not mated by the dominant male upon emergence, 13% of females were not observed to be mated at all and may have left their natal site as virgins, 25% of females were mated multiple times and sometimes by multiple males, females remained near the natal site for up to several hours after emergence before emigrating, and males dispersed away from the natal site during female emergence. Trissolcus basalis may be a predominantly inbreeding species but its emergence and mating behavior suggest that low-frequency outbreeding is also likely to occur.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to compare the recovery dynamics in three shrub communities subjected to experimental burning and cutting, and situated on an altitudinal gradient. Climatic features are different in each area, but all had the common characteristic of very homogeneous vegetation cover before the disturbances, with only one shrub species clearly dominant, a different taxon in each area, and with different regeneration strategies. The first area was a heathland dominated by Calluna vulgaris, situated at an altitude of 1600 m, with a continental climate (mean annual precipitation 1320 mm). The second area was a heathland dominated by Erica australis, located at an altitude of 1000 m (mean annual precipitation 840 mm). The third area was a Cistus ladanifer shrubland, located at 900 m altitude, with a Mediterranean climate similar to that of the previous area, but with lower mean annual precipitation (470 mm). Erica australis recovers by vegetative resprouting, but Cistus ladanifer is an obligate seeder, as is Calluna vulgaris in these areas. Each experimental disturbance was carried out over 100 m2 in each area. Post-fire recovery is faster in Cistus ladanifer: 2 years after burning there was 40% cover vs. less than 20% in the other two species. However, recovery after cutting was similar for Cistus ladanifer and Erica australis. Calluna vulgaris recovers very slowly, with cover values below 20% even 10 years after both disturbances. Cover of dominant shrub species is negatively correlated with cover of herbaceous species. So different recovery of dominant species lead a different community dynamic in each area.  相似文献
