Effects of 18 days of bed rest on leg and arm venous properties.   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Venous function may be altered by bed rest deconditioning. Yet the contribution of altered venous compliance to the orthostatic intolerance observed after bed rest is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of 18 days of bed rest on leg and arm (respectively large and small change in gravitational gradients and use patterns) venous properties. We hypothesized that the magnitude of these venous changes would be related to orthostatic intolerance. Eleven healthy subjects (10 men, 1 woman) participated in the study. Before (pre) and after (post) 18 days of 6 degrees head-down tilt bed rest, strain gauge venous occlusion plethysmography was used to assess limb venous vascular characteristics. Leg venous compliance was significantly decreased after bed rest (pre: 0.048 +/- 0.007 ml x 100 ml(-1) x mmHg(-1), post: 0.033 +/- 0.007 ml x 100 ml(-1) x mmHg(-1); P < 0.01), whereas arm compliance did not change. Leg venous flow resistance increased significantly after bed rest (pre: 1.73 +/- 1.08 mmHg x ml(-1) x 100 ml x min, post: 3.10 +/- 1.00 mmHg x ml(-1) x 100 ml x min; P < 0.05). Maximal lower body negative pressure tolerance, which was expressed as cumulative stress index (pressure x time), decreased in all subjects after bed rest (pre: 932 mmHg x min, post: 747 mmHg x min). The decrease in orthostatic tolerance was not related to changes in leg venous compliance. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that after bed rest, leg venous compliance is reduced and leg venous outflow resistance is enhanced. However, these changes are not related to measures of orthostatic tolerance; therefore, alterations in venous compliance do not to play a major role in orthostatic intolerance after 18 days of head-down tilt bed rest.  相似文献

Classical venous occlusion plethysmography (VOP) of the leg, often used to assess venous compliance, measures properties of the whole calf, including volume changes at the arterial side and the interstitial fluid accumulation that occurs as a result of the enhanced capillary pressure during venous occlusion. We present an ultrasound technique to measure the compliance of one major conduit vein in the leg. Ultrasound measurements of the popliteal vein were compared with classical VOP measurements, which were performed simultaneously in one subject. Six healthy individuals were measured on three occasions to assess short- and long-term reproducibility of the measurements. Six motor complete spinal cord-injured (SCI) individuals were included to compare venous compliance in subjects with known pathological changes of the venous system with controls. The ultrasound and VOP measurements of venous compliance correlated significantly (r(2) = 0.39, P = 0.001). Ultrasound provides reproducible measurements with short- and long-term coefficients of variation ranging from 10 to 15% for popliteal vein compliance and from 2 to 9% for absolute diameters at the different venous pressure steps. In addition, by using ultrasound, we were able to detect an 80% reduction in the compliance of the popliteal vein in SCI individuals compared with controls (P < 0.01). In conclusion, ultrasound is a suitable and reproducible method to measure conduit vein compliance and provides the possibility to specifically assess compliance of one vein instead of the whole calf.  相似文献

This paper reports changes in the main parameters of lower limb veins in 35 cosmonauts in the course of six-month space missions. Major reduction in the leg volume was shown in all cosmonauts, as well as a significant increase in venous capacitance and compliance. The rate of lower leg vein filling exhibited different trends; it was decreased in the majority of cosmonauts (n = 26, 74%) and increased in the rest (n = 9, 26%). Increases in venous capacitance, compliance, and filling rates may impact orthostatic stability (OS). These changes are among the pathophysiological mechanisms of the OS loss in spaceflight.  相似文献

In multiple system atrophy (MSA), increased venous compliance with excessive venous pooling is assumed to be a major contributor to orthostatic hypotension (OH); however, venous compliance has never been assessed in MSA patients. We evaluated the severity and distribution of adrenergic, cardiovagal, and sudomotor failure in 11 patients with probable MSA, 14 age- and sex-matched control subjects, and 8 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) but not OH. Calf venous compliance, venous filling, and capillary filtration were measured using calf plethysmography. The response to the directly acting alpha-adrenergic stimulation (10 mg midodrine) on calf venous compliance was additionally evaluated. Contrary to our hypothesis, pressure-volume curves in the legs of MSA patients were flatter than in PD patients (P < 0.05) or controls (P < 0.001); this indicated reduced calf venous compliance in MSA. The MSA group had reduced venous filling compared with control (P < 0.001) or PD subjects (P < 0.001) but had a normal capillary filtration rate (P = 0.73). Direct alpha-adrenergic stimulation resulted in a slight but significant reduction of calf venous compliance in controls (P = 0.001) and PD subjects (P < 0.001) but not in the MSA group. The compliance change in MSA significantly regressed with autonomic failure (composite autonomic severity scale, r(2) = 0.56) but not with parkinsonism (Unified MSA Rating Scale, r(2) = 0.12). Our data indicate that MSA patients with chronic OH have reduced, rather than increased, venous compliance in the lower leg. We postulate that chronic venous distension that is associated with OH results in structural remodeling of veins, leading to reduced compliance, a change which may protect patients against orthostatic stress.  相似文献

Increased leg venous compliance may contribute to postflight orthostatic intolerance in astronauts. We reported that leg compliance was inversely related to the size of the muscle compartment. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that reduced muscle compartment after long-duration exposure to microgravity would cause increased leg compliance. Eight men, 31-45 yr old, were measured for vascular compliance of the calf and serial circumferences of the calf before and after 30 days of continuous 6 degrees head-down bed rest. Cross-sectional areas (CSA) of muscle, fat, and bone compartments in the calf were determined before and after bed rest by computed tomography. From before to after bed rest, calculated calf volume (cm3) decreased (P less than 0.05) from 1,682 +/- 83 to 1,516 +/- 76. Calf muscle compartment CSA (cm2) also decreased (P less than 0.05) from 74.2 +/- 3.6 to 70.6 +/- 3.4; calf compliance (ml.100 ml-1.mmHg-1.100) increased (P less than 0.05) from 3.9 +/- .7 to 4.9 +/- .5. The percent change in calf compliance after bed rest was significantly correlated with changes in calf muscle compartment CSA (r = 0.72, P less than 0.05). The increased leg compliance observed after exposure to simulated microgravity can be partially explained by reduced muscle compartment. Countermeasures designed to minimize muscle atrophy in the lower extremities may be effective in ameliorating increased venous compliance and orthostatic intolerance after spaceflight.  相似文献

Aging and chronic exercise training influence leg venous compliance. Venous compliance affects responses to an orthostatic stress; its effect on tolerance to maximal lower body negative pressure (LBNP) in the elderly is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of age and fitness, a surrogate measure of exercise training, on calf venous compliance and tolerance to maximal LBNP in men and women. Forty participants, 10 young fit (YF; age = 22.6 +/- 0.5 yr, peak oxygen uptake = 57.1 +/- 2.0 ml.kg(-1).min(-1)), 10 young unfit (YU; 23.1 +/- 1.0 yr, 41.1 +/- 2.0 ml.kg(-1).min(-1)), 10 older fit (OF; 73.9 +/- 2.0 yr, 39.0 +/- 2.0 ml.kg(-1).min(-1)), and 10 older unfit (OU; 70.9 +/- 1.6 yr, 27.1 +/- 2.0 ml.kg(-1).min(-1)), underwent graded LBNP to presyncope or 4 min at -100 mmHg. By utilizing venous occlusion plethysmography, calf venous compliance was determined by using the first derivative of the pressure-volume relation during cuff pressure reduction. We found that the more fit groups had greater venous compliance than their unfit peers (P < 0.05) as did the young groups compared with their older peers (P < 0.05) such that OU < YU = OF < YF. LBNP tolerance did not differ between groups. In conclusion, these data suggest that aging reduces, and chronic exercise increases, venous compliance. However, these data do not support a significant influence of venous compliance on LBNP tolerance.  相似文献

The extent to which exercise training in a previously sedentary older population will affect venous compliance and tolerance to the simulated orthostatic stress of maximal lower body negative pressure (LBNP) is unknown. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the influence of a 6-mo endurance-training program on calf venous compliance and responses and tolerance to maximal LBNP in older men and women. Twenty participants (exercise group: n = 10, 5 men, 5 women; control group: n = 10, 6 men, 4 women; all >60 yr) underwent graded LBNP to presyncope or 4 min at -100 mmHg before and after a 6-mo endurance-training program. Utilizing venous occlusion plethysmography, calf venous compliance was determined in both groups using the first derivative of the pressure-volume relation during cuff pressure reduction before training, at 3 mo, and at the end of the training program. The exercise group improved their fitness with the 6-mo endurance-training program, whereas the control group did not change (14 +/- 3 vs. <1 +/- 2%; P < 0.05). LBNP tolerance did not differ between groups or across trials (P = 0.47). Venous compliance was not different between groups or trials, either initially or after 3 mo of endurance training, but tended to be greater in the exercise group after 6 mo of training (P = 0.08). These data suggest that a 6-mo endurance-training program may improve venous compliance without affecting tolerance to maximal LBNP in older participants.  相似文献

We study the arterial and venous circulation of the normal leg by strain gauge plethysmography and venous occlusion (thigh tourniquet). We propose the application of a simplified linear physical model of the venous circulation. It helps to analyse the plethysmographic data recorded during and after the congestion. It ignores the arterial inflow and consider the post-occlusive venous volume decay in function of time as being monoexponential. The venous compliance (C) is measured when the volume has reached a steady-state level during the congestion (known pressure). The time-constant (T) characterizes the volume decay in function of time when the occlusion is released. The tourniquet is successively inflated with two levels of pressure (30 and 60 mm Hg) in order to check if the system is actually linear as predicted by the model. The venous outflow is not strictly monoexponential and the model is only suitable to describe the beginning of the curve. The compliance does not behave linearly, the values measured at 30 mm Hg, being higher than at 60 mm Hg ($ 26%). The time-constant T is slightly influenced by the level of pressures. The calculated resistance is therefore lower at low pressure. We also study the arterial inflow before and after the venous congestion (3 min, 60 mm Hg). We observe a post-venous occlusion hyperaemia (mean rest flow: 5.2%/min, mean hyperemic flow: 12.1%/min) followed by a drop of the inflow (mean minimal flow: 3.4%/min). We evaluate the quantitative influence of neglecting the arterial inflow on the computing of the venous properties. The simplification appears acceptable.  相似文献

Experiments carried out on anesthetized dogs have shown that reperfusion of long-ischemized leg tissues is accompanied by a significant decrease of the cardiac output and myocardial contractility. Restriction of the venous return to the heart is important in the cardiac output decrease due to an increase of venous compliance and blood pooling on the peripheral circulation. The preliminary blockade of platelet-activating factor (PAF) receptors decreases degree of the cardio- and hemodynamic disturbances after reperfusion of ischemized tissues and prevents development of pulmonary hypertension. Similarity of the postreperfusion central and peripheral hemodynamic disturbances and animal responses to injection of the exogenous PAF as well as the presence of the protective effect of PAF-receptor antagonist BNo. 52021 permit concluding, that PAF takes part in the development of postischemic shock reaction and its receptor blockade can be used to prevent postreperfusion hemodynamic disorders.  相似文献

For compression treatment to be effective in patients with chronic venous insufficiency, it is vital that leg circumference be measured accurately. If compression stockings are custom fit and appropriate for the medical indications, patient compliance will be high. Exact measurements of circumference and length are prerequisites for a good fit. The aim of the present study was to compare an opto-electronic device for the contact-free measurement of calf circumference with the conventional manual method using a tape measure. We investigated the differences between the results obtained with the two methods, and also their reproducibility. Circumferences were measured at defined heights on an anatomically shaped non-yielding leg model and on the leg of a healthy volunteer by 10 different experimenters both with the tape measure and with the opto-electronic device. The calf circumferences measured manually with the tape measure varied significantly more than those measured opto-electronically, both in the leg model and in the leg of the volunteer. A systematic error in the opto-electronic method appears unlikely, since the manual measurements on the leg model were both larger and smaller than those obtained with the opto-electronic device. Reproducibility was exceptionally high with the opto-electronic device (standard deviation 0.11-0.42 cm). The opto-electronic method yields rapid accurate measurements of circumference with excellent intra- and inter-operator reproducibility.  相似文献

Total effective vascular compliance was measured repeatedly in open-chest dogs without circulatory arrest, utilizing a closed-circuit venous bypass system with a constant cardiac output. Mutual inductance coils were used to measure the diameter of the inferior vena cava above the diaphragm at the position where the pressure change was recorded during a volume load (lambde V). In all experiments, there was a relationship which tended to be curvilinear between the diameter of the inferior vena cava and the venous pressure before lambde V. No relationship was demonstrated between the initial diameter or pressure and the calculated effective vascular compliance. During aortic constriction or infusion of noradrenaline, the effective compliance was reduced in value at any given initial venous diameter and pressure. An unaltered venous diameter and plasma volume excluded the possibility of a large change in initial venous volume as a cause of the observed changes in compliance during aortic constriction or during infusion of noradrenaline. A relationship was observed between compliance and calculated venous wall tension so that as the wall tension, developed during a fixed volume load, increased, there was an associated reduction in compliance. These results demonstrate that the measurement of effective compliance provides an assessment of combined active and passive venous wall tension and venous tone.  相似文献

Venous compliance is lower in older adults compared with younger adults. It is possible that alterations in venous smooth muscle tone and responsiveness may contribute to the age-related differences in venous compliance. To determine the effects of sympathetic activation [cold pressor test (cold pressor test); rhythmic ischemic handgrip (rhythmic ischemic handgrip)] and endothelium-independent decreases in smooth muscle tone [sublingual nitroglycerin (nitroglycerin)] on venous compliance in young and older adults, forearm and calf venous compliance was measured in 12 young (22 +/- 1 yr) and 12 old (65 +/- 1 yr) supine subjects using venous occlusion plethysmography. Venous compliance was assessed at baseline, during the cold pressor test and rhythmic ischemic handgrip tests, and after nitroglycerin administration. All pressure-volume relationships were modeled with a quadratic regression equation, and beta1 and beta2 were used as indexes of venous compliance. A repeated-measures ANOVA was used to determine the effect of the age and trial on venous compliance. Calf regression parameters beta1 (0.0639 +/- 0.0126 vs. 0.0503 +/- 0.0059, young vs. older; P < 0.05) and beta2 (-0.00054 +/- 0.00011 vs. -0.00041 +/- 0.00005, young vs. older; P < 0.05) were significantly less in older adults at baseline. Similarly, forearm regression parameters, beta1 and beta2 were lower in older adults at baseline. Venous compliance was not effected by the cold pressor test test, rhythmic ischemic handgrip, or sublingual nitroglycerin in either group. Data suggest that forearm and calf venous compliance is lower in older adults compared with young. However, this difference probably cannot be explained by alterations in smooth muscle tone or responsiveness.  相似文献

Leg vascular resistance is calculated as the arterial-venous pressure gradient divided by blood flow. During orthostatic challenges it is assumed that the hydrostatic pressure contributes equally to leg arterial, as well as to leg venous pressure. Because of venous valves, one may question whether, during orthostatic challenges, a continuous hydrostatic column is formed and if leg venous pressure is equal to the hydrostatic pressure. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to measure intravenous pressure in the great saphenous vein of 12 healthy individuals during 30 degrees and 70 degrees head-up tilt and compare this with the calculated hydrostatic pressure. The height difference between the heart and the right medial malleolus level represented the hydrostatic column. The results demonstrate that there were no differences between the measured intravenous pressure and the calculated hydrostatic pressure during 30 degrees (47.2 +/- 1.0 and 46.9 +/- 1.5 mmHg, respectively) and 70 degrees head-up tilt (83.9 +/- 0.9 and 85.1 +/- 1.2 mmHg, respectively). Steady-state levels of intravenous pressure were reached after 95 +/- 12 s during 30 degrees and 161 +/- 15 s during 70 degrees head-up tilt. In conclusion, the measured leg venous pressure is similar to the calculated hydrostatic pressure during orthostatic challenges. Therefore, the assumption that hydrostatic pressure contributes equally to leg arterial as well as to leg venous pressure during orthostatic challenges can be made.  相似文献

Compared with arterial hemodynamics, there has been relatively little study of venous hemodynamics. We propose that the venous system behaves just like the arterial system: waves propagate on a time-varying reservoir, the windkessel, which functions as the reverse of the arterial windkessel. During later diastole, pressure increases exponentially to approach an asymptotic value as inflow continues in the absence of outflow. Our study in eight open-chest dogs showed that windkessel-related arterial resistance was approximately 62% of total systemic vascular resistance, whereas windkessel-related venous resistance was only approximately 7%. Total venous compliance was found to be 21 times larger than arterial compliance (n = 3). Inferior vena caval compliance (0.32 +/- 0.015 ml x mmHg(-1) x kg(-1); mean +/- SE) was approximately 14 times the aortic compliance (0.023 +/- 0.002 ml x mmHg(-1) x kg(-1); n = 8). Despite greater venous compliance, the variation in venous windkessel volume (i.e., compliance x windkessel pulse pressure; 7.8 +/- 1.1 ml) was only approximately 32% of the variation in aortic windkessel volume (24.3 +/- 2.9 ml) because of the larger arterial pressure variation. In addition, and contrary to previous understanding, waves generated by the right heart propagated upstream as far as the femoral vein, but excellent proportionality between the excess pressure and venous outflow suggests that no reflected waves returned to the right atrium. Thus the venous windkessel model not only successfully accounts for variations in the venous pressure and flow waveforms but also, in combination with the arterial windkessel, provides a coherent view of the systemic circulation.  相似文献

Leg venous compliance is a determinant of peripheral venous pooling during orthostatic stress such that high venous compliance could contribute to reduced orthostatic tolerance. We tested the hypotheses that 1) calf venous compliance is reduced during baroreceptor unloading, and 2) calf venous compliance is greater in women than men. Twelve men (27 +/- 2 yr) and 12 women (25 +/- 2 yr) were studied in the supine posture. Calf venous compliance was determined by inflating a thigh venous collecting cuff to 60 mmHg for 8 min and then decreasing cuff pressure at a rate of 1 mmHg/s to 0 mmHg. The slope of the pressure-compliance relation (compliance = beta(1) + 2.beta(2).cuff pressure), which is the first derivative of the quadratic pressure-volume relation [(Deltalimb volume) = beta(0) + beta(1).(cuff pressure) + beta(2).(cuff pressure)(2)] during the reduction in collecting cuff pressure, was used to assess venous compliance at baseline and during one-legged lower body negative pressure (LBNP; -50 mmHg). At baseline, calf venous compliance was 48% lower (P < 0.001) in women than men and decreased in men (Delta-25 +/- 8%; P < 0.05) but not women (Delta1 +/- 11%) during LBNP. Rhythmic ischemic handgrip (Delta6 +/- 9%) and cold pressor testing (Delta-9 +/- 7%) did not alter calf venous compliance in a subgroup of men (n = 6). These data indicate gender-dependent effects on calf venous compliance under conditions associated with low sympathetic outflow (i.e., rest) and high sympathetic outflow (i.e., LBNP). However, they cannot explain gender-associated differences in orthostatic tolerance.  相似文献

Recent studies in humans have suggested sex differences in venous compliance of the lower limb, with lower compliance in women. Capillary fluid filtration could, however, be a confounder in the evaluation of venous compliance. The venous capacitance and capillary filtration response in the calves of 12 women (23.2 +/- 0.5 years) and 16 men (22.9 +/- 0.5 years) were studied during 8 min lower body negative pressure (LBNP) of 11, 22, and 44 mmHg. Calf venous compliance is dependent on pressure and was determined using the first derivative of a quadratic regression equation that described the capacitance-pressure relationship [compliance = beta1 + (2 x beta2 x transmural pressure)]. We found a lower venous compliance in women at low transmural pressures, and the venous capacitance in men was increased (P < 0.05). However, the difference in compliance between sexes was reduced and not seen at higher transmural pressures. Net capillary fluid filtration and capillary filtration coefficient (CFC) were greater in women than in men during LBNP (P < 0.05). Furthermore, calf volume increase (capacitance response + total capillary filtration) during LBNP was equivalent in both sexes. When total capillary filtration was not subtracted from the calf capacitance response in the calculation of venous compliance, the sex differences disappeared, emphasizing that venous compliance measurement should be corrected for the contribution of CFC.  相似文献

We determined the independent and interactive influences of aging and habitual endurance exercise on calf venous compliance in humans. We tested the hypotheses that calf venous compliance is 1) reduced with age in sedentary and endurance-trained men, and 2) elevated in young and older endurance-trained compared with age-matched sedentary men. We studied 8 young (28 +/- 1 yr) and 8 older (65 +/- 1) sedentary, and 8 young (27 +/- 1) and 8 older (63 +/- 2) endurance-trained men. Calf venous compliance was measured in supine subjects by inflating a venous collecting cuff, placed above the knee, to 60 mmHg for 8 min and then decreasing cuff pressure at 1 mmHg/s to 0 mmHg. Calf venous compliance was determined using the first derivative of the pressure-volume relation during cuff pressure reduction (compliance = beta(1) + 2. beta(2). cuff pressure). Calf venous compliance was reduced with age in sedentary (approximately 40%) and endurance-trained men (approximately 20%) (both P < 0.01). Furthermore, calf venous compliance was approximately 70-120% greater in endurance-trained compared with age-matched sedentary men and approximately 30% greater in older endurance-trained compared with young sedentary men (both P < 0.01). These data indicate that calf venous compliance is reduced with age in sedentary and endurance-trained men, but compliance is better preserved in endurance-trained men.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the clinical and cost effectiveness of compression systems for treating venous leg ulcers. METHODS: Systematic review of research. Search of 19 electronic databases including Medline, CINAHL, and Embase. Relevant journals and conference proceedings were hand searched and experts were consulted. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Rate of healing and proportion of ulcers healed within a time period. STUDY SELECTION: Randomised controlled trials, published or unpublished, with no restriction on date or language, that evaluated compression as a treatment for venous leg ulcers. RESULTS: 24 randomised controlled trials were included in the review. The research evidence was quite weak: many trials had inadequate sample size and generally poor methodology. Compression seems to increase healing rates. Various high compression regimens are more effective than low compression. Few trials have compared the effectiveness of different high compression systems. CONCLUSIONS: Compression systems improve the healing of venous leg ulcers and should be used routinely in uncomplicated venous ulcers. Insufficient reliable evidence exists to indicate which system is the most effective. More good quality randomised controlled trials in association with economic evaluations are needed, to ascertain the most cost effective system for treating venous leg ulcers.  相似文献

Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is a major problem after spaceflight. Its etiology remains uncertain, but reports have pointed toward an individual susceptibility to OI. We hypothesized that individual predisposition plays an important role in post-bed rest OI. Twenty-four healthy male subjects were equilibrated on a constant diet, after which they underwent tilt-stand test (pre-TST). They then completed 14-16 days of head-down-tilt bed rest, and 14 of the subjects underwent repeat tilt-stand test (post-TST). During various phases, the following were performed: 24-h urine collections and hormonal measurements, plethysmography, and cardiovascular system identification (a noninvasive method to assess autonomic function and separately quantify parasympathetic and sympathetic responsiveness). Development of presyncope or syncope defined OI. During pre-TST, 11 subjects were intolerant and 13 were tolerant. At baseline, intolerant subjects had lower serum aldosterone (P < 0.01), higher excretion of potassium (P = 0.01), lower leg venous compliance (P = 0.03), higher supine parasympathetic responsiveness (P = 0.02), and lower standing sympathetic responsiveness (P = 0.048). Of the 14 subjects who completed post-TST, 9 were intolerant and 5 were tolerant. Intolerant subjects had lower baseline serum cortisol (P = 0.03) and a higher sodium level (P = 0.02) compared with tolerant subjects. Thus several physiological characteristics were associated with increased susceptibility to OI. We propose a new model for OI, whereby individuals with greater leg venous compliance recruit compensatory mechanisms (activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and sympathetic nervous system, and withdrawal of the parasympathetic nervous system) in the face of daily postural challenges, which places them at an advantage to face orthostatic stress. Numerous studies have shown that the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone have multiple effects on the vasculature. Thus our goal was to investigate the effects of estrogen and progesterone on calf venous compliance by looking for cyclic changes during the early follicular, ovulatory, and midluteal phases of the menstrual cycle and during high and low hormone phases of oral contraceptive use. Additionally, we wanted to compare the venous compliance of normally menstruating women, oral contraceptive users, and men. We studied eight normally menstruating women (23 +/- 1 yr of age) during the early follicular, ovulatory, and midluteal phases of the menstrual cycle. Nine triphasic oral contraceptive users (21 +/- 1 yr of age) were studied during weeks of high and low hormone concentrations. Eight men (23 +/- 1 yr of age) were studied twice within 2-4 wk. With the use of venous occlusion plethysmography with mercury in-Silastic strain gauges, lower limb venous compliance was measured by inflating a venous collection cuff that was placed on the thigh to 60 mmHg for 8 min and then reducing the pressure to 0 mmHg at a rate of 1 mmHg/s. Venous compliance was calculated as the derivative of the pressure-volume curves. There were no differences between early follicular, ovulatory, and midluteal phases of the menstrual cycle or between high and low hormone phases of oral contraceptive use (P > 0.05). Male venous compliance was significantly greater than in normally menstruating women (P < 0.001) and oral contraceptive users (P < 0.002). These data support a sex difference but also suggest that venous compliance does not change with menstrual cycle phase or during the course of oral contraceptive use.  相似文献
