In this report, we studied the formation of breaks in the frog dermis during its remodelling at climactic metamorphosis. This remodelling consisted of detachment of the basement lamella collagen from the epidermis. The detached part, called derived collagen, was progressively fractured by breaks. We focused our attention on dermal cell localization during break formation. Firstly, at early climax, dermal cells were localized inside fractures opened in the derived collagen. Secondly, at the later climax, the fractures became breaks, making room for the dermal cells themselves. Thirdly, in derived collagen of the froglet, the well-opened breaks contained elongated dermal cells. At climax, DAB immunoperoxidase staining of fibronectin revealed a granular pattern at the surface of epidermal and dermal cells. Unexpected staining revealed that the dermal breaks contained fibronectin in the form of vertical lines. The foregoing results suggest that the dermal breaks are migratory pathways for dermal cells in derived collagen remodelled at climax.  相似文献

Under a variety of circumstances, melanin occurs in the dermal compartment of the skin, being mostly observed in cells that have been termed melanophages, some of which have been identified as dermal dendritic cells. We analysed changes in the expression and secretion pattern of cytokines by dendritic cells after the uptake of melanin from various sources. Dendritic cells were derived from human primary blood monocytes or from the human monocytic cell line THP-1. Melanin uptake increased the secretion of the chemokines MIP-1β (CCL4) and MCP-1 (CCL2). The higher MIP-1β secretion was accompanied by higher MIP-1β gene expression. Elevation of MIP-1β secretion was dependent on the uptake of melanin but could not be induced by the phagocytosis of latex beads, indicating that the phagocytic process itself was not sufficient to increase the secretion of this cytokine. The data thus show that the uptake of melanin changes the cytokine expression and secretion pattern of dendritic-like cells.  相似文献

Summary: The migrating cranial neural crest cells of birds, fish, and mammals have been shown to form the membranous bones of the cranium and face. These findings have been extrapolated to suggest that all the dermal bones of the vertebrate exoskeleton are derived from the neural crest ectomesenchyme. However, only one group of extant animals, the Chelonians, has an extensive bony exoskeleton in the trunk. We have previously shown that the autapomorphic carapacial and plastron bones of the turtle shell arise from dermal intramembranous ossification. Here, we show that the bones of the plastron stain positively for HNK‐1 and PDGFRα and are therefore most likely of neural crest origin. Archaeological bone remains of sturgeon (Acipenser sturio/Acipenser oxyrinchus) from northwestern Europe are often identified to species on the basis of their surface morphology and then used to reconstruct the spatial distribution of the two species through time. The dermal bones of A. sturio are said to have an exterior surface pattern consisting of tubercles, while those of A. oxyrinchus are said to display alveoli. In the present paper, the validity of the surface pattern as a species‐specific characteristic is critically assessed. To this purpose, dermal plates from modern, genetically identified museum specimens were studied and the surface morphology observed in a series of archaeological remains was compared with the genetic identifications obtained on these same remains. The analyses show that the surface pattern of dermal bones is related to the size of the individual, with the pattern of small A. oxyrinchus being similar to that of A. sturio. In addition, variations in the surface pattern among the bones of a single individual and within the same bone have been observed. These findings explain previous conflicting results between morphological and genetic identifications and allow the formulation of some recommendations for more accurate morphological identification of isolated archaeological sturgeon dermal bones.  相似文献

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are heparin-binding protein mitogens that induce division of most cultured cells derived from embryonic mesoderm and neuroectoderm. Terminally differentiated neurons also respond in vitro by eliciting outgrowth of neurites. In vivo, FGFs have been shown to induce DNA synthesis, cell migration, blood vessel growth, and dermal wound closure. The protein and nucleic acid sequences for two different FGFs, denoted acidic and basic FGF, have been determined and recognized to be homologous. Abstract: Circumorbital dermal bones are found in most groups of early vertebrates that have dermal bony plates on the head. Taxonomic distribution of dermal sclerotic plates on the eye itself is less clear, partly because the eyeball is rarely preserved and sometimes because sclerotic bones have been misinterpreted as circumorbital bones. Based on the examination of climatiid Climatius plus mesacanthid, cheiracanthid and acanthodid acanthodiform acanthodians, we conclude that most, if not all, acanthodiforms and climatiids had sclerotic rings. Presence and number of these elements should be included as a character in phylogenetic analyses of early jawed vertebrates.  相似文献

The development of dermal ridges, ridge configurations, and volar pad contours was investigated in the volar skin of the rat (Rattus norvegicus). The ridged structures corresponding to the epidermal ridges of primates exist only at the epidermal-dermal junction in the rat. Dermal specimens were prepared by treatment with alkaline solution and examined by toluidine blue staining and scanning electron microscopy, together with histological sections. Differentiation of dermal ridges began on day 18 of gestation on the palm followed by the sole. Ridges increased in number with advancing age. The process was complete approximately 2-3 days after birth, and sweat ducts began to develop simultaneously. As dermal ridges present various configurational patterns on palmar interdigital pad III, pattern formation on this pad was inspected in fetuses of three inbred strains possessing different pattern types, and in the hybrid progeny derived from them. Patterns and pad forms appeared to be under genetic control. It was revealed that the ridge arrangements, i.e., whorls, triradii, comb-like patterns, and others, are closely related to the pad contours during the developmental period, as hypothesized in primates.  相似文献

Summary Metastases to the lungs of guinea pigs occurred at high frequency as a consequence of intradermal implantation of tumor cells derived from the syngeneic hepatocellular carcinoma line-10. Surgery had a major influence on the proportion of guinea pigs found to have pulmonary metastases at necropsy. Without surgery all guinea pigs died with extensive lymph node metastases; macroscopic pulmonary metastases were present in a minority of the animals. Animals treated by excision of dermal tumors survived longer than untreated animals, and macroscopic pulmonary metastases were present in the majority of the animals. Animals treated by excision of dermal tumor and regional lymph nodes were rendered tumor-free. The data suggest that lymph node metastases were the most likely source of the tumor cells that spread to the lungs in animals from whom the dermal tumor transplant had been removed.  相似文献

The genus Ctemogenys was originally described as a lizard on the basis of isolated jaw fragments from the Upper Jurassic deposits of Como Bluff, Wyoming. The discovery of new material from a Middle Jurassic locality at Kirtlington, Oxfordshire, showed that Cteniogenys was not a lizard, but an early choristodere. The skull is represented by a collection of isolated bones, associated on the basis of fit and dermal sculpture pattern. The bones are here described and compared with those of the Late Cretaceous and Palaeocene choristoderes Champsosaurus and Simoedosaurus. Allowing for the much smaller size of the Middle Jurassic form, there is a close correspondence between the isolated bones of the three genera. Comparison with known choristoderes, based on an analysis of 53 derived character states, suggests that Ctemogenys is the most primitive of known genera. In general, the character states shared by all choristoderes support recent analyses which conclude that choristoderes arc derived from archosauromorph diapsids, not lepidosauromorphs as once thought. At Kirtlington, Cteniogenys forms part of a diverse microvertebrate assemblage including amiids, sharks, frogs, salamanders, lizards, mammals, crocodiles, pterosaurs, turtles and small dinosaurs.  相似文献

The formation of periodic patterns is of fundamental importance in embryonic development. One of the simplest and most frequently observed patterns is the maintenance of a minimum distance between neighbouring elements, for example between teeth, hair, feathers, digits etc. Theoretical models describing these phenomena have been proposed for feather patterning. However, there has been no detailed quantitative analysis of the relationship between cell population density and feather spacing. To define the relation between these quantities and specifically to test the prediction of a mathematical model, we have examined the formation of the feather pattern after varying proportions of the dermal cells have been killed by X-irradiation. It is known that the development of a feather primordium is normally associated with an increase in cell population density in the dermis. Using X-ray irradiation of the skin in vivo and in vitro, we show that the relation between cell population density and spacing of feather primordia indicates the importance of a threshold number of cells for feather patterning. Moreover, there is a prima facie case for supposing that X-rays act on feather spacing system, reducing the ability of dermal cells to prevent spreading of the pattern. Thus, X-irradiation may have a secondary effect on the spacing of primordia rather than, or as well as, affecting the mechanisms that determine their primary positions.  相似文献

The present study describes a complex array of sensory nerve terminals in the human eyelid. In many respects this pattern of innervation resembles that previously described in the rhesus monkey, but in other respects it is unique to man. The most prominent nerve terminals are a complex array of lanceolate and circular Ruffini and free nerve endings that envelop the eyelashes. In addition, Merkel cells have not been conclusively identified to date in other nonhuman primate nonsinus hairs. The external root sheath collar contains Merkel cells, and dermal Merkel cells have also been identified close to the collar. The anterior cutaneous surface of the eyelid contains small vellus hairs with typical lanceolate, Ruffini, and free nerve endings resembling those of primate facial skin. Scattered Meissner and scant simple corpuscles as well as scattered free nerve endings (FNEs) can be identified on the occlusal surface of the eyelid. Intraepithelial as well as dermal FNEs were most easily identified in this region in areas lacking other corpuscular receptors. Corpuscular receptors are especially common at the occlusal/conjunctival angle. The inner or conjunctival surface of the eyelid appears to be a glandular epithelium, whereas in the rhesus monkey it is stratified squamous epithelium. This epithelium needs additional study. In summary, the present study confirms the unique sensory neural status of the human eyelid and verifies the presence of Ruffini nerve terminals by light and electron microscopy and of free nerve ending terminals at least by light microscopy, as well as a unique pattern of innervation of the human eyelash.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: An altered frequency of specific dermal ridge patterns on fingertips, such as an increased number of arches, has been observed in children exposed in utero to anticonvulsants and other teratogens. Asymmetry of the distribution of dermal ridge patterns has been attributed to environmental exposures and genetic factors. METHODS: We evaluated all of the dermal ridge patterns of 66 children who had been exposed to either the anticonvulsant phenytoin alone or phenytoin and phenobarbital. We determined the frequency of each pattern, concordance between the fingers on the left and right hands, sex differences and total ridge counts in the drug-exposed children and compared them to the findings in 716 unexposed comparison children. The frequency of each pattern was established in comparison to the most common type of pattern (ulnar loop), which showed that there were alterations in the frequency of arches, radial loops and whorls on specific fingers. RESULTS: Eight (12.1%) of 66 children had three or more arch patterns, with all but one having been exposed to phenytoin and phenobarbital. Only one of these eight children was considered by the masked examiner to have fingernail hypoplasia. There was no evidence of asymmetry in the anticonvulsant-exposed children. There were minor differences in the distribution of total ridge count. CONCLUSIONS: Subtle differences in several dermal ridge patterns, not just arch patterns, were present in anticonvulsant-exposed children, primarily in those exposed to polytherapy: phenytoin and phenobarbital.  相似文献

The ovule primordium of Costus is trizonate and both its integuments are dermally initiated. With other evidence, this strongly suggests that most, if not all, monocotyledons have dermally initiated integuments, indicating a derived status. The mature seed coat of Costus is completely formed by the outer integument and its principal mechanical layer is the endotesta.
The seed of Costus has an aril, an operculum and a micropylar collar. These structures, characteristic of zingiberalean seeds, are each initiated in a different, specific cell layer of the exostome. The aril is completely dermally initiated. The parenchymatic part of the operculum and the micropylar collar are of dual origin, namely dermal at me integumentary region and subdermal at the raphe.  相似文献

Sutures in the dermal skull roof of several Palaeozoic temnospondyl amphibians were studied, including Archegosaurus decheni, Sclerocephalus haeuseri, Cheliderpeton latirostre (Archegosauridae), Acanthostomatops vorax (Zatrachydidae), Onchiodon labyrinthicus (Eryopidae), Micromelerpeton credneri and Branchierpeton amblystomum (Dissorophoidea). Lamellae, flat bevels, butt joints, steep walls, and grooves are the sutural types occurring. Morphological sutural differences cannot be used as taxonomically relevant characters, as they mainly differ in their functional manifestations. Similarities of sutural patterns in taxa not closely related are most probably based on convergence, therefore sutural morphology allows functional conclusions rather than revealing phylogenetic relationships. The basic sutural pattern is described in Micromelerpeton credneri. Different textures and obliquity patterns of the sutural surfaces are characteristic of each region of the skull roof. In all temnospondyls studied, the median plane and the margin of the skull roof show a nearly uniform sutural morphology; the circumorbital region is most complex. Although the skulls studied are akinetic, mesokinetic movements of dermal elements along their sutures must have been permitted to guarantee the dynamic stability of the skull construction.  相似文献

The pattern of onset and general rate of cranial ossification are compared in two marsupials, Monodelphis domestica (Didelphidae) and Macropus eugenii (Macropodidae). In both species a similar suite of bones is present at birth, specifically those surrounding the oral cavity and the exoccipital, and in both postnatal events follow a similar course. The facial skeleton matures more rapidly than the neurocranium, which is characterized by an extended period of ossification. Most dermal bones begin ossification before most endochondral bones. Endochondral bones of the neurocranium are particularly extended in both the period of onset of ossification and the rate of ossification. These data confirm suggestions that morphology at birth is conservative in marsupials and we hypothesize that the pattern of cranial osteogenesis is related to two distinct demands. Bones that are accelerated in marsupials are correlated with a number of functional adaptations including head movements during migration, attachment to the teat, and suckling. However, the very slow osteogenesis of the neurocranium is probably correlated with the very extended period of neurogenesis. Marsupials appear to be derived relative to both monotreme and placental mammals in the precocious ossification of the bones surrounding the oral cavity, but share with monotremes an extended period of neurocranial osteogenesis. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Clinical data published in recent years have demonstrated positive effects of collagen hydrolysate (CH) on skin aging clinical signs. CH use as food supplement has a long history; however, few studies have addressed the underlying purpose of CH on the cellular and molecular biology of skin cells that could elucidate clinical improvement findings. Wide diversity of characteristics has been reported for dermal fibroblasts derived from different body sites and it is unknown whether collagen peptides could modulate differently cells from chronological aged and photoaged skin areas. This study investigated the influence of CH on the extracellular matrix metabolism and proliferation of human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) derived from chronological aged (sun‐protected) and photoaged (sun‐exposed) body sites. CH treatment did not affect cellular proliferation of either cell cultures, but notably modulated cell metabolism in monolayer model, increasing the content of dermal matrix precursor and main protein, procollagen I and collagen I, respectively. These effects were confirmed in the human dermal equivalent model. The increase in collagen content in the cultures was attributed to stimulation of biosynthesis and decreased collagen I metabolism through inhibition of metalloproteinase activity (MMP) 1 and 2. Modulation of CH in dermal metabolism did not differ between cells derived from sun‐protected and sun‐exposed areas, although lower concentrations of CH seemed to be enough to stimulate sun‐exposed‐derived HDFs, suggesting more pronounced effect in these cells. This study contributes to understanding the biological effects of CH on skin cells and viability of its use as a functional ingredient in food supplements.  相似文献

The capacity of lower follicle dermal sheath to restore hair growth was tested by removing the lower halves of follicles, and then immediately implanting material containing dermal sheath cells from these bases, into the remaining upper epidermal follicle cavity. Over 60% of recipient follicles produced stout emergent vibrissa fibres and some operations resulted in multiple hair production from a single follicle. Histological examination revealed new dermal papillae within large bulb structures which were sited below the level of amputation--a feature that indicated that the new dermal papilla was derived from implanted material. For many follicles, the failure to produce emergent fibres could be accounted for after histological examination. These results provide clear evidence that lower follicle dermal sheath cells are capable of replacing those of the dermal papilla and it shows that they can do so in the context of the upper follicle. However, because elements of lower follicle epidermis were present in the implant material, the interactive sequence of events cannot be established. Dermal sheath cells have immense potential for papilla cell replacement: questions remain as to whether the distinction between sheath and papilla cells is one of context, or whether the transition requires specific external influences.  相似文献

The plumage of the Estrildidae was examined in order to determine the incidence and origin of the spotted patterns.
In the Australian grassfinches a series of feathers showing the derivation of spotted patterns from transverse barring was found in two species. In most species such patterns consisted of single broad spots, but in two species paired spots were present.
The mannikins show three types of spotted pattern. One is derived from transverse barring, another from a rachial streak, and the third from a combination of both bars and streaks. The last one is not a true spotted pattern, the effect being due to overlapping feathers.
The waxbills show spotted patterns derived from transverse barring, the development of which exactly parallels that shown by the grassfinches, but differs in that almost all patterns show paired spots.
The spotted patterns appear to have been derived from a basic barred pattern in most cases, and to represent an increasing complexity of pattern rather than a gradual loss.
It is considered that similar patterns in widely separated species are due to parallel evolution of patterns and not to phylogenetically close relationship.
Where various species show different successive stages in the evolution of a pattern, this does not indicate that one is ancestral to another. Since the species concerned have a common family relationship, the potential for such a pattern may be present throughout the family.
Since the patterns have a function in specific recognition, it is suggested that similar patterns are likely to recur in widely separated localities and that the patterns of sympatric species are likely to differ. If similar patterns are present in one area they will probably indicate close relationship.
The inference of this in relation to plumage pattern problems in some other orders is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Coralloid roots of cycads were found to originate endogenously from the pericycle of apogeotropic secondary roots or adventitious roots that have become exposed or nearly exposed to the soil surface. All mature coralloid roots are susceptible to infection by algal endophytes, which seem to enter from the soil through a break in the dermal layers. In the coralloid roots the algae inhabit intercellular spaces in a definite zone that arises from the protoderm, and in which the cells elongate radially following algal infection. The zone is completely surrounded by a persistent rootcap which is interpreted by most authors as a secondary cortex. The secondary cortex was shown to be derived from the rootcap in this investigation.  相似文献

The dermatoglyphics of 54 leukemic children do not differ significantly from those of 25 mothers and 592 unrelated controls with respect to frequency of digital pattern types, position of axial triradius, or type of palmar flexion creases. These findings do not support the hypothesis that children with leukemia have an increased frequency of unusual dermal patterns, but suggest that the dermatoglyphics of leukemic children are not distinctive and therefore have no practical value in the diagnosis of childhood leukemia. Whatever factors are responsible for the development of leukemia in children, these factors do not appear regularly to affect the differentiation of the dermal ridges.  相似文献
