This Editorial for Issue 3 (Vol. 14 2022) of Biophysical Reviews first describes the Issue’s contents (five commentaries/editorials within the front matter and seven review/letter articles appearing within the main body) before going on to discuss a number of matters of potential importance to the journal and its readers. Amongst this second tranche of content is the opening of the call for nominations for the 2023 Michèle Auger Award for Young Scientists’ Independent Research.

Created in 2009, Biophysical Reviews is the flagship journal of IUPAB, the International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB 2022). Each of the journal’s six issues per year are divided into a front section, dealing with journal process and points of interest to biophysicists and IUPAB society members, and a main section, that presents scientific Letters and Reviews that are written by recognized experts in the field and are selected with an eye to providing an as wide as possible level of international participation. The first duty of each Issue’s editorial is to provide a precis of both the non-scientific and scientific articles appearing within, and we carry this out forthwith.  相似文献

Congratulations to Mario Giordano (Instituto di Scienze del Mare, Facoltà di Scienze, Università di Acona), Mustafa Kansiz, Philip Heraud, John Beardall, Bayden Wood and Don McNaughton (Monash University, Clayton, Australia) who received the Luigi Provasoli Award for the Outstanding Paper published in the Journal during 2001. Their winning paper (vol. 37, no. 2, 271-279 ) is entitled "Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as a novel tool to investigate changes in intracellular macromolecular pools in the marine microalga Chaetoceros muellrii (Bacillariophyceae)." This award is presented by the Editorial Board and honors the memory of Luigi Provasoli (1908-1992), founding editor of the Journal, and a scientist whose research on life histories and nutritional requirements of the algae continues to affect research in many fields of phycology.  相似文献

The 2008 Lasker-Koshland Award will be presented to Stanley Falkow, one of the legendary figures in the history of microbiology research. Falkow's many contributions remade the way we think about bacterial pathogens, antibiotic resistance, and infectious disease.  相似文献

I am so very honored to receive the Women in Cell Biology Sandra K. Masur Senior Leadership Award from the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB), particularly because many of the previous awardees have served as mentors and sources of inspiration throughout my own career. I also thank the ASCB for always striving to be maximally inclusive, in terms of both the scientists it supports and its broad vision of what constitutes cell biology. As a graduate student I gave one of my first talks at an ASCB meeting, and I am proud to have been an ASCB member for almost 30 years. In this essay, I describe my own career to illustrate the support that I believe is needed to achieve a career in science.

I always found it curious that in science, we value unique, creative thinkers, but we teach scientists to progress in a formulaic manner that rarely takes each person’s individual strengths into account. Surprisingly, when we break the mold, we are often rewarded for it. This cycle of learning to survive using conventional wisdom but being rewarded for a unique path outside of it seems to be an unspoken key to success. I am honored to be awarded the 2020 Women in Cell Biology Junior Award for Excellence in Research and am thrilled to share some of the unconventional guiding principles that brought me to where I am in this rich scientific landscape. The game changers in the early phase of my career were informal mentors, open scientific communication, and persistence in pursuing difficult scientific questions.
