Cranial and dental measurements were taken on 100 skulls, consisting of 20 specimens each, representing five different human populations. In addition to traditional cranial and dental measurements, sets of nonstandard basicranial and cervical dental measurements were collected. The data were subjected to univariate and multivariate analyses to determine what kinds of data best sort human populations. Both univariate and multivariate analyses indicate that traditional and nontraditional cranial measurements separate major human groups better than do dental measurements, with traditional cranial measurements providing the best sorting criteria. The cervical dental measurements proved to be better sorters of human groups than the traditional maximum dental measurements for univariate, but not for multivariate, analyses. Thus, when utilizing univariate techniques, osteologists can increase sample sizes of teeth by collecting cervical data.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Typically, bead-based assays ("bead arrays") use the mean or median value of a population of measurements to judge ligand binding or other activity, which results in a change in fluorescence intensity. Individual bead measurements are used here to calculate population parameters integral to the measurement of a bead array. METHODS: Using a commercially-available instrument designed for bead array measurements, a set of beads were labeled with biotin and then titrated with PE-Streptavidin. Data were collected under normal machine conditions as well as variations. RESULTS: The "sensitivity" of the measurements was determined using parametric and nonparametric statistical methods as well as regression analysis over a limited range of the titration (concentration vs. response profile). CONCLUSIONS: Results at low ligand concentrations suggest that precise measurements with bead array systems require a large number of individual bead measurements to be acquired. Individual bead measurements should be used to determine the mean and confidence intervals for the calculated measurements. These results also apply to regression analysis of concentration-response profiles. Furthermore, features of the instrument can be manipulated to achieve increased sensitivity and detection of lower amounts of ligand bound to the bead populations.  相似文献

Leaf water potentials were estimated from the sum of the balancing pressure measured with a pressure chamber and the osmotic potential of the xylem sap in leafy shoots or leaves. When leaf water potentials in yew, rhododendron, and sunflower were compared with those measured with a thermocouple psychrometer known to indicate accurate values of leaf water potential, determinations were within ± 2 bars of the psychrometer measurements with sunflower and yew. In rhododendron. water potentials measured with the pressure chamber plus xylem sap were 2.5 bars less negative to 4 bars more negative than psychrometer measurements.

The discrepancies in the rhododendron measurements could be attributed, at least in part, to the filling of tissues other than xylem with xylem sap during measurements with the pressure chamber. It was concluded that, although stem characteristics may affect the measurements, pressure chamber determinations were sufficiently close to psychrometer measurements that the pressure chamber may be used for relative measurements of leaf water potentials, especially in sunflower and yew. For accurate determinations of leaf water potential, however, pressure chamber measurements must be calibrated with a thermocouple psychrometer.

The survey of a French male population allowed us to ascertain 75 propositi with one or two missing ULI, 59 propositi with one or two reduced ULI and 99 controls on whom measurements (mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters) of all teeth of the superior arch are available. Principal Component Analysis gave a first estimated principal component highly correlated with each of the dental measurements or arch measurements. This size factor was eliminated by observing the plane of the second and third principal components. Strikingly different clusters of MD diameters or BL diameters were observed for the controls, the propositi missing one or two of the ULI and the propositi with reduced ULI. For the controls, the arch length is correlated with the MD molar diameters and the MD incisor diameter, the arch width being isolated from the other measurements. For the propositi with missing ULI, among the dental measurements the MD and BL diameters cluster, the arch length is isolated as are the arch widths. For the propositi with reduced ULI, the arch length is closer to the dental measurements while the widths, especially the first one, are isolated. The best discriminant measurements are the diameters of the first premolars and the canine, the first arch width and the arch length. Among controls, the arch is narrowed and shorter for the propositi with absence and wider for the propositi with reduction. Teeth measurements are always smaller in propositi.  相似文献

The present study investigates the utility of cervical measurements in deciduous teeth and how they correlate with traditional measurements of the crown. First, this study establishes definitions by which these measurements could reliably be taken. Next, deciduous cervical and traditional crown diameters were taken on three distinct skeletal samples: a Neolithic assemblage from Central Anatolia (Çatalhöyük, n = 85), a precontact sample from Northern California (CA‐ALA‐329, n = 34), and a group of intrusive burials interred at Çatalhöyük that date between AD 60 and 1650 (n = 38). Across the dentition there are positive correlations between crown and cervical measurements, which tend to be higher in anterior teeth than in posterior teeth. Both measurements show low correlations with age; however, cervical measurements show fewer negative correlations with age. An intraobserver error study found low levels of error for both types of measurements. On a subset of the Çatalhöyük sample (n = 9), a principal components and biological distance analysis were conducted comparing the two types of measurements. Also, all three samples were subject to a canonical discriminant function analysis and the results from cervical and crown measurements were compared. All analyses produced slightly different results for each type of data suggesting that crown and cervical measurements capture different aspects of tooth shape. While cervical and crown measurements provide different statistical results, cervical measurements can provide information relevant to anthropological studies and may allow for larger datasets to be used by allowing the inclusion of teeth with modified crowns. We evaluated the EchoMRI‐900 combination rat and mouse quantitative magnetic resonance (QMR) body composition method in comparison to traditional whole‐body chemical carcass composition analysis (CCA) for measurements of fat and fat‐free mass in rodents. Live and postmortem (PM) QMR fat and lean mass measurements were obtained for lean, obese and outbred strains of rats and mice, and compared with measurements obtained using CCA. A second group of rats was measured before and after 18 h food or water deprivation. Significant positive correlations between QMR and CCA fat and lean mass measurements were shown for rats and mice. Although all live QMR fat and lean measurements were more precise than CCA for rats, values obtained for mice significantly differed from CCA for lean mass only. QMR performed PM slightly overestimated fat and lean values relative to live QMR but did not show lower precision than live QMR. Food deprivation reduced values for both fat and lean mass; water deprivation reduced estimates of lean mass only. In summary, all measurements using this QMR system were comparable to those obtained by CCA, but with higher overall precision, similar to previous reports for the murine QMR system. However, PM QMR measurements slightly overestimated live QMR values, and lean and fat mass measurements in this QMR system are influenced by hydration status and animal size, respectively. Despite these caveats, we conclude that the EchoMRI QMR system offers a fast in vivo method of body composition analysis, well correlated to but with greater overall precision than CCA.  相似文献

Determination of sex from the femur measurements has been attempted in several populations and various studies have demonstrated the importance of population specific standards in the metric assessment of sex. The present study attempts to establish metric standards for sex determination by using femur measurements for ancient Japanese populations. Osteometric data were obtained from 151 adult skeletal remains from Jomon period, Yoshigo human skeletal collection. Eight femur measurements were taken and the data were analyzed by discriminant analysis using SPSS version 10.0. For the univariate discriminant function derived, precision of sex determination was 93% with the condyle breadth. Prediction values showed that sex differentiation could be done by femur measurements with reliability between 66.9 and 100%, with values for males higher than for females. It is suggested that discriminant formulas developed by femur measurements in this study, can be used for sex determination accurately on fragmentary skeletal remains in ancient Japanese populations.  相似文献

An epi-illumination design for fluorescence polarization measurements is introduced in flow cytometry with the optical axis orthogonally aligned to the cell stream. Various optical components and designs are discussed with respect to their influence on polarization measurements. Using the epi-configuration, paired measurements with the direction of polarization of the exciting light changed orthogonally are proposed for the compensation of system anisotropies and electronic mismatch. Large aperture corrections are employed for the excitation as well as for the emission pathway. Additional parameters such as fluorescence at 90 degrees, multiangle light scattering, and high precision cell-sizing by internally calibrated time of the flight measurements, as described previously, remain available with the design proposed here. Fluorescent latex microspheres, stained intracellular DNA, and algae have been used to test performance.  相似文献

We describe and review progress towards a global strategy that aims to extend the sensitivity, dynamic range, comprehensiveness, and throughput of proteomic measurements for microbial systems based upon the use of polypeptide accurate mass tags (AMTs) produced by global protein enzymatic digestions. The two-stage strategy exploits high accuracy mass measurements using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR) to validate polypeptide AMTs for a specific organism, from potential mass tags tentatively identified using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), providing the basis for subsequent measurements without the need for routine MS/MS. A high-resolution capillary liquid chromatography separation combined with high sensitivity, and high-resolution accurate FTICR measurements is shown to be capable of characterizing polypeptide mixtures of more than 10(5) components, sufficient for broad protein identification using AMTs. Advantages of the approach include the high confidence of protein identification, its broad proteome coverage, and the capability for stable-isotope labeling methods for precise relative protein abundance measurements. The strategy has been initially evaluated using the microorganisms Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Deinococcus radiodurans. Additional developments, including the use of multiplexed-MS/MS capabilities and methods for dynamic range expansion of proteome measurements that promise to further extend the quality of proteomics measurements, are also described.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the precision and accuracy of facial anthropometric measurements obtained through digital 3-D surface photogrammetry with the DSP 400 system in comparison to traditional 2-D photogrammetry. Fifty plaster casts of cleft infants were imaged and 21 standard anthropometric measurements were obtained. For precision assessment the measurements were performed twice in a subsample. Accuracy was determined by comparison of direct measurements and indirect 2-D and 3-D image measurements. Precision of digital surface photogrammetry was almost as good as direct anthropometry and clearly better than 2-D photogrammetry. Measurements derived from 3-D images showed better congruence to direct measurements than from 2-D photos. Digital surface photogrammetry with the DSP 400 system is sufficiently precise and accurate for craniofacial anthropometric examinations.  相似文献

Factors affecting testicular measurements in situ and the relationships among the measurements and various reproductive characteristics were studied using data from 48 stallions. Mean values during the breeding season are provided for scrotal width, widths and lengths of individual testes, combined weight of testicular parenchyma, daily sperm production and daily sperm output. Testicular measurements were highly repeatable from day to day and for repeated measurements on a given day; technician provided the largest source of variation in the measurements of a given stallion. Age significantly affected all testicular measurements; testicular size for 2- to 3-year-old stallions did not differ (P greater than 0.05) from that for 4- to 6-year-olds, but was smaller (P less than 0.05) than testicular size of stallions greater than or equal to 7 years old. Scrotal width was correlated (P less than 0.01) with daily sperm production (r = 0.75) and daily sperm output (r = 0.55) and was generally the most repeatable measurement.  相似文献

PURPOSE: This investigation assessed the validity of estimates of exposure to 1,3-butadiene (BD) developed for a plant included in a study of mortality among synthetic rubber industry workers. The estimates were developed without using historical measurement data and have not been validated previously. METHODS: Personal BD measurements came from an exposure-monitoring program initiated in 1977. For each job, we computed the year-specific difference between the BD estimate and the mean of BD measurements. We also computed rank correlation coefficients and calculated the mean, across all measurements, of the difference between the estimate and the measurement. RESULTS: The mean BD concentration was 5.2 ppm for 4978 measurements and 4.7 ppm for the corresponding estimates. The mean difference between estimates and measurements was -0.50 ppm (standard deviation, 26.5 ppm) overall and ranged from -227.9 to +27.0 ppm among all 306 job/year combinations. Estimates were correlated with measurements for all 306 combinations (rank correlation coefficient, r=0.45, p<0.0001), for 82 combinations pertaining to jobs that were well-defined by a specific set of tasks and typically found in styrene-BD rubber (SBR) plants (r=0.81, p<0.0001), for 70 combinations pertaining to jobs that were well-defined but not typical (r=0.29, p=0.01) and for 92 combinations pertaining to poorly-defined jobs typically found in SBR plants (r=0.56, <0.0001). Estimates were not correlated with measurements for poorly defined jobs not typically found in SBR plants (r=0.01, p=0.93). For well-defined typical SBR jobs with measurement means that were over 7.0 ppm, estimates were consistently lower than measurements. CONCLUSIONS: Possible reasons for differences between estimates and measurements included faulty assumptions used in developing BD estimates, unstable or nonrepresentive measurements and errors in linking measurement data to the job-exposure matrix. Exposure misclassification may have been more severe for subjects from the validation study plant than for subjects from other plants in the mortality study. BD estimates for typical SBR jobs, which comprise most operations at all but one of the plants in the mortality study, appeared to be useful for ranking workers by cumulative exposure. Uncertainty analyses would enhance the utility of the BD exposure estimates for quantitative risk assessment.  相似文献

The primary goal of our study was to compare photogrammetric measurements with caliper-derived measurements. We also looked at the difference between caliper-derived measurements that were taken with and without the landmarks marked. Thirteen facial measurements were repeated ten times on two adult subjects as follows: 1) Calipers were used to take the measurements before the landmarks were marked on each subject's face; 2) the landmarks were then marked with a black pencil, and the calipers were used to take the measurements again; and 3) images were taken of each subject with the markings left on the face, and the measurements were extracted from these images. Compared with the caliper-derived data taken with the landmarks marked, the photogrammetric means and standard deviations were typically larger, leading us to conclude that there was a systematic difference between the data. The generally greater variation in the photogrammetric measurements was ascribed to poor conditions, such as shadows, oblique markings, and unmarked landmarks. When the data gathered by caliper with and without the landmarks marked were compared, a systematic difference was suggested by the number of statistically significant t-test probabilities. Marking the landmarks reduced the standard deviations in some measurements by controlling two sources of variation: differing pressure on the skin and slippage of the calipers. Anthropologists, medical geneticists, and others who use measurements for diagnostic or classificatory purposes should be aware that data gathered by different techniques may yield different results. This study was conducted to quantify the relationships between in vivo measurements of testicular and seminal vesicle size and post mortem size of these organs in 30 Santa Gertrudis bulls. The in vivo measurements of testicles were obtained by transrectal ultrasonography and palpation per rectum, while scrotal circumference was measured by scrotal tape. Linear post mortem dimensions were obtained by direct measurements of the excised organs. Volume was assessed by water displacement while the testicles were weighed. Seminal vesicle length, determined by palpation, had the highest correlation with post mortem measurements (r = 0.70; P = 0.0001). Accurate estimation of the thickness of the vesicles (1.47 vs 1.55 cm for in vivo and post mortem, respectively) was performed by ultrasonograph. Of all seminal vesicle linear measurements, width had the highest correlations with volume measured by water displacement (r = 0.67; P = 0.0001 and r = 0.38; P = 0.04 for post mortem and in vivo, respectively). Testicular diameter was accurately measured by ultrasonography (5.54 vs 4.58 cm in vivo and post mortem, respectively) and was highly correlated (range r = 0.84 to 0.89; P = 0.0001) with post mortem measurements of testicular volume, weight and circumference. The correlation between scrotal circumference and diameter of the testicle was 0.75 (P = 0.0001). The correlations of testicular diameter measured by ultrasound with the post mortem measurements of testicular weight and circumference were similar to the correlations between scrotal circumference and those 2 post mortem measurements. We conclude that palpation of vesicle length is highly correlated with volume of the seminal vesicle in situ. Individual linear measurements do not seem to be an accurate predictor of the relativ size of the seminal vesicle. Furthermore, ultrasonography does not seem to be a more accurate measure of testicular size than scrotal circumference for evaluation of breeding soundness.  相似文献

A dorsal skin flap model for microcirculatory studies has been modified for "in vivo" studies of laser-tissue interaction with microcirculation. An experimental apparatus has been built implementing a laser delivery system, video microscopy during irradiation, and thermal recordings. This model has been used to study irradiation effects on microcirculation using the argon laser (488 and 514.5 nm) and the argon pumped dye laser at 577 nm. The results include: measurements of the optical properties of the model; dosimetry measurements for the production of embolized and stationary coaguli in arterioles and venules; and focal vessel disappearance of venules irradiated with the argon or the argon pumped dye laser at 577 nm; a method to determine light attenuation in the model; a unique method for measurements of blood flow velocity in arterioles and venules and measurements obtained with this method; measurements of transient and steady state temperatures during irradiation and a study of laser induced photorelaxation phenomena in venules.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether distance data based on calculations by use of digitalized geographical information systems (GIS) and distance data based on measurements on 1:5000 maps agree sufficiently with on site distance measurements to be used as input to magnetic field calculations in epidemiological studies. The analysis were performed by use of weighted kappa (kappa(w)) statistical method described by Bland and Altman for comparison of measures of agreement. Map measurements showed better agreement with on site measurements than GIS calculations did. However, we consider both methods appropriate for use in larger epidemiological studies if the results are interpreted with caution. GIS calculations have the advantage of being both time and cost saving.  相似文献

A character-selection procedure initially applied in vertebrates (viverrid carnivores and murid rodents), but with a potential, more general application, was used to select appropriate characters for a morphometric investigation of weevils on Marion Island. An initial set of 23 linear measurements, adopted from a previous morphometric study, was subjected to cluster and ordination procedures to summarize patterns of correlations between measurements. Criteria were developed for the selection of representative measurements within cluster analysis-generated sub-clusters, after the exclusion of redundant measurements. This reduced the 23 initial variables to a final set of 15 measurements. The general grouping of variables was broadly consistent across all weevil species examined. Apart from economizing, by reducing the number of characters that have to be measured for subsequent analyses, the procedure also provides a way to adequately represent the phenotype, and to investigate morphological integration.  相似文献

Measurement of newborn babies is widely regarded as being too inaccurate to justify its regular practice. It is common for infants to be weighed at birth and for no other measurements to be made. Although such assumptions are superficially correct, it is possible to train people to perform accurate measurements and for improved performance to be sustained. Accurate sequential measurements are possible and provide more information than single measurements. Detailed measurements show that postnatal growth may change rapidly and dramatically, particularly in preterm infants. Postnatal growth impairment is common in such infants and may be sustained. Limited evidence suggests that there may be a significant reduction in final stature. Preliminary data also suggest that many preterm infants may also show evidence of alterations in biochemical and physiological variables consistent with early programming and the potential for altered disease susceptibility in adult life.  相似文献

ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to dosimetrically benchmark gel dosimetry measurements in a dynamically deformable abdominal phantom for intrafraction image guidance through a multi-dosimeter comparison. Once benchmarked, the study aimed to perform a proof-of-principle study for validation measurements of an ultrasound image-guided radiotherapy delivery system.MethodsThe phantom was dosimetrically benchmarked by delivering a liver VMAT plan and measuring the 3D dose distribution with DEFGEL dosimeters. Measured doses were compared to the treatment planning system and measurements acquired with radiochromic film and an ion chamber. The ultrasound image guidance validation was performed for a hands-free ultrasound transducer for the tracking of liver motion during treatment.ResultsGel dosimeters were compared to the TPS and film measurements, showing good qualitative dose distribution matches, low γ values through most of the high dose region, and average 3%/5 mm γ-analysis pass rates of 99.2%(0.8%) and 90.1%(0.8%), respectively. Gel dosimeter measurements matched ion chamber measurements within 3%. The image guidance validation study showed the measurement of the treatment delivery improvements due to the inclusion of the ultrasound image guidance system. Good qualitative matching of dose distributions and improvements of the γ-analysis results were observed for the ultrasound-gated dosimeter compared to the ungated dosimeter.ConclusionsDEFGEL dosimeters in phantom showed good agreement with the planned dose and other dosimeters for dosimetric benchmarking. Ultrasound image guidance validation measurements showed good proof-of-principle of the utility of the phantom system as a method of validating ultrasound-based image guidance systems and potentially other image guidance methods.  相似文献

A new approach is presented for measuring the three-dimensional orientation of individual macromolecules using single molecule fluorescence polarization (SMFP) microscopy. The technique uses the unique polarizations of evanescent waves generated by total internal reflection to excite the dipole moment of individual fluorophores. To evaluate the new SMFP technique, single molecule orientation measurements from sparsely labeled F-actin are compared to ensemble-averaged orientation data from similarly prepared densely labeled F-actin. Standard deviations of the SMFP measurements taken at 40 ms time intervals indicate that the uncertainty for individual measurements of axial and azimuthal angles is approximately 10 degrees at 40 ms time resolution. Comparison with ensemble data shows there are no substantial systematic errors associated with the single molecule measurements. In addition to evaluating the technique, the data also provide a new measurement of the torsional rigidity of F-actin. These measurements support the smaller of two values of the torsional rigidity of F-actin previously reported.  相似文献
