Age peculiarities of functional brain asymmetry in perception of emotional information of the speech have been revealed. It was shown that the age of 4-7 years is the most important period in ontogenesis for the age dynamics of functional brain asymmetry in perception of emotions. It is in this particular age that functional reorganization of perception in stuttering children is observed. The revealed disturbances in functional brain asymmetry indicate that correction of emotional activity in stutterers should be made during early periods of ontogenesis.  相似文献

Studies have been made on individual variations in perception of speech emotional information by 7-16-year children. Significant differences between subjects from various age groups were found concerning the correct recognition of emotions, the degree of brain asymmetry and domination type. The exactness of emotional recognition increases with age, while the degree of asymmetry becomes lower, the right hemisphere domination becoming more stable in processing of speech emotional information. With age, individual type of asymmetry turns to the specific one, reflecting asymmetry formation during evolution.  相似文献

In the present study, we investigated brain morphological signatures of dyslexia by using a voxel-based asymmetry analysis. Dyslexia is a developmental disorder that affects the acquisition of reading and spelling abilities and is associated with a phonological deficit. Speech perception disabilities have been associated with this deficit, particularly when listening conditions are challenging, such as in noisy environments. These deficits are associated with known neurophysiological correlates, such as a reduction in the functional activation or a modification of functional asymmetry in the cortical regions involved in speech processing, such as the bilateral superior temporal areas. These functional deficits have been associated with macroscopic morphological abnormalities, which potentially include a reduction in gray and white matter volumes, combined with modifications of the leftward asymmetry along the perisylvian areas. The purpose of this study was to investigate gray/white matter distribution asymmetries in dyslexic adults using automated image processing derived from the voxel-based morphometry technique. Correlations with speech-in-noise perception abilities were also investigated. The results confirmed the presence of gray matter distribution abnormalities in the superior temporal gyrus (STG) and the superior temporal Sulcus (STS) in individuals with dyslexia. Specifically, the gray matter of adults with dyslexia was symmetrically distributed over one particular region of the STS, the temporal voice area, whereas normal readers showed a clear rightward gray matter asymmetry in this area. We also identified a region in the left posterior STG in which the white matter distribution asymmetry was correlated to speech-in-noise comprehension abilities in dyslexic adults. These results provide further information concerning the morphological alterations observed in dyslexia, revealing the presence of both gray and white matter distribution anomalies and the potential involvement of these defects in speech-in-noise deficits.  相似文献

Data about peculiarities of organization of motor control and brain functional asymmetry pattern in highly trained judo wrestlers are presented. It has been shown that in athletes the right hemisphere is predominant in processing of both speech and visual-spatial information, while high competition results in wrestlers with left-side stand correlates with prevalence of the left hemisphere in speech perception. It is suggested that high sport results in wrestlers are due to formation of novel long-term skills, reorganization of motor control, and interhemispheric interaction.  相似文献

The processing of faces relies on a specialized neural system comprising bilateral cortical structures with a dominance of the right hemisphere. However, due to inconsistencies of earlier findings as well as more recent results such functional lateralization has become a topic of discussion. In particular, studies employing behavioural tasks and electrophysiological methods indicate a dominance of the right hemisphere during face perception only in men whereas women exhibit symmetric and bilateral face processing. The aim of this study was to further investigate such sex differences in hemispheric processing of personally familiar and opposite-sex faces using whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG). We found a right-lateralized M170-component in occipito-temporal sensor clusters in men as opposed to a bilateral response in women. Furthermore, the same pattern was obtained in performing dipole localization and determining dipole strength in the M170-timewindow. These results suggest asymmetric involvement of face-responsive neural structures in men and allow to ascribe this asymmetry to the fusiform gyrus. This specifies findings from previous investigations employing event-related potentials (ERP) and LORETA reconstruction methods yielding rather extended bilateral activations showing left asymmetry in women and right lateralization in men. We discuss our finding of an asymmetric fusiform activation pattern in men in terms of holistic face processing during face evaluation and sex differences with regard to visual strategies in general and interest for opposite faces in special. Taken together the pattern of hemispheric specialization observed here yields new insights into sex differences in face perception and entails further questions about interactions between biological sex, psychological gender and influences that might be stimulus-driven or task dependent.  相似文献

In acute experiments on 2-24 days old immobilized kittens and adult cats, studies have been made on the development of functional interhemispheric asymmetry of homotopical transcallosal responses in the parietal cortex. It was found that the number of animals with evident asymmetry increases with age. Alongside, with respect to such characters as asymmetry coefficient, mean amplitude of components of transcallosal components and the ratio of zones of direct and inverse domination, the increase in functional interhemispheric asymmetry was observed during the second week of postnatal life of kittens, which was accompanied by the inversion of its sign; in adult cats, the decrease in the asymmetry up to its complete absence was found. The data obtained are discussed with respect to peculiarities of the development and functional properties of the associative parietal cortex in cats.  相似文献

The effect of gonadectomy and sex-steroid hormones treatment on functional interhemispheric asymmetry to the reaction of pain cry avoidance of another species (emotional reactions) and motor and exploratory activity of open-field behavior in Wistar rats of 3 months old has been investigated. A spreading depression technique for hemisphere inactivation has been used. The hemispheric asymmetry of the reactions in intact rats was characterized by sex dimorphism; the left hemisphere dominated to a great extent in males than in females under the control of emotional reactions; in motor and exploratory activity in open-field behavior of rats the left hemisphere dominated in males and the right one--in female. In both sexes the neonatal gonadectomy levelled the interhemispheric differences in reactions under investigation. The following treatment of females with estradiol and males with testosterone didn't restore the asymmetry. After the castration at the age of 3 months the correlation between the size and direction of interhemispheric differences became reverse. The treatment of females with testosterone and males with estradiol both castrated in adulthood restored the interhemispheric asymmetry in males and had no effect in females. The treatment of intact rats with hormones of opposite sex led to the enhancement of left hemisphere dominance in motor and exploratory activity in males and levelled the asymmetry in females. It has been shown that in adult rats sex-steroids effect predominantly the right hemisphere.  相似文献

The perception of spatial and successive contexts of auditory information develops during child ontogeny. We compared event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded in 5- to 6-year-old children (N = 15) and adults (N = 15) in response to a digital series with omitted digits to explore age differences in the perception of successive auditory information. In addition, ERPs in response to the sound of a falling drop presented binaurally were obtained to examine the spatial content of auditory information. The ERPs obtained from the omitted digits significantly differed in the amplitude and latency of the N200 and P300 components between adults and children, which supports the hypothesis that the perception of a successive auditory structure is less automatic in children compared to adults. Although no significant differences were found in adults, the sound of a falling drop presented to the left ears of children elicited ERPs with earlier latencies and higher amplitudes of the P300 and N400 components in the right temporal area. Stimulation of the right ear caused an increasing amplitude of the N100 component in children. Thus, the observed differences in the auditory ERPs of children and adults reflect developmental changes in the perception of spatial and successive auditory information.  相似文献

Bilateral asymmetry in the structure of the second metacarpal was examined in relation to functional hand dominance in a large, clinically nonselected, healthy population sample from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. Bilateral bone measurements were made from anteroposterior hand radiographs of a total of 992 individuals, 609 males and 383 females, with an age range of 19–94 years. Hand dominance was determined on the basis of personal impression. Total width and medullary width at the midshaft of the second metacarpal were measured to 0.05 mm using a Helios caliper. These two measurements were used to derive cortical thickness, cortical bone area, periosteal (total) area, medullary area, percent cortical area, and the second moment of area in the mediolateral plane. In both right and left-handed individuals, statistically significant side differences were found in the calculated bone areas and the second moment of area, with the dominant hand being larger. Cortical thickness did not show significant side-related differences for either handedness. These results show that functional handedness leads to periosteal and endosteal expansion of the second metacarpal cortex on the dominant side, increasing bone strength without increasing cortical thickness. This is the first time this pattern of asymmetry has been reported in left-handers as well as right-handers. Our results argue for the primacy of environmental (mechanical) effects in determining bilateral asymmetry of limb bone structural properties. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The recent evidence from literature testify to functional asymmetry of the structures belonging to the limbic system: hippocampus, amygdala, and hypothalamus. Predominant activation of the right hippocampus and right amygdala during perception and memorizing of visual picturesque images and solving the tasks provoking emotional stress, apparently, concerns the functional specialization of the right hemisphere in general. The leading role of the left hypothalamus in provocation of food, sexual, and defensive responses was experimentally verified. This finding is in line with the functional role of the left hemisphere in genesis of motivational states.  相似文献

There are significant challenges to restoring binaural hearing to children who have been deaf from an early age. The uncoordinated and poor temporal information available from cochlear implants distorts perception of interaural timing differences normally important for sound localization and listening in noise. Moreover, binaural development can be compromised by bilateral and unilateral auditory deprivation. Here, we studied perception of both interaural level and timing differences in 79 children/adolescents using bilateral cochlear implants and 16 peers with normal hearing. They were asked on which side of their head they heard unilaterally or bilaterally presented click- or electrical pulse- trains. Interaural level cues were identified by most participants including adolescents with long periods of unilateral cochlear implant use and little bilateral implant experience. Interaural timing cues were not detected by new bilateral adolescent users, consistent with previous evidence. Evidence of binaural timing detection was, for the first time, found in children who had much longer implant experience but it was marked by poorer than normal sensitivity and abnormally strong dependence on current level differences between implants. In addition, children with prior unilateral implant use showed a higher proportion of responses to their first implanted sides than children implanted simultaneously. These data indicate that there are functional repercussions of developing binaural hearing through bilateral cochlear implants, particularly when provided sequentially; nonetheless, children have an opportunity to use these devices to hear better in noise and gain spatial hearing.  相似文献

The level of the brain permanent potential as a physiological criterion of the functional interhemisphere asymmetry, as well as immunological and biochemical characteristics of peripheral blood in patients with systemic rheumatic diseases were studied. It was found that the distribution of the characteristics of immune response in patients with different types of interhemisphere asymmetry. Significant differences were observed for average values of biochemical and immunological characteristics, their dispersions, as well as for the structure of relationships between the type of the interhemisphere asymmetry and immunobiochemical characteristics.  相似文献

It is assumed that the transition from the Late Eneolithic to the Early Bronze Age in Central Europe was associated with substantial changes in subsistence and the perception of gender differences. However, the archeological record itself does not entirely support this model. Alternatively, this transition may be interpreted as a continuous process. We used asymmetry in external dimensions, and asymmetry in size and distribution of cortical tissue of humeri to elucidate the nature of this transition with respect to differences in manipulative behavior. The total sample of 67 individuals representing five archaeological cultures was used. The results indicate that the pattern of asymmetry of the humeral external measurements and the cross-sectional parameters taken at 35% of humeral biomechanical length remain stable during the Late Eneolithic and Early Bronze Age. However, females of both periods show fluctuating asymmetry for all of the cross-sectional parameters, but directional asymmetry for biomechanical length. Males are nonsignificantly shifted from the line of equivalence for biomechanical length, but exhibit directional asymmetry for the cortical area and polar moment of area. Only distal articular breadth yields fluctuating asymmetry for both females and males in both periods. Thus, the transition from the Late Eneolithic to the Early Bronze Age can be seen as a continuous process that probably affected only a limited part of human activities. We interpret the differences between females and males of both periods as evidence of gender-specific activities; males might have been associated with extra-domestic agricultural labor that resulted in asymmetrical manipulative loading and females with domestic labor with symmetrical manipulative loading in both periods.  相似文献

The worrying increase of nutritional disorders and psychological discomfort in young population, mainly from western societies, shows that body image could be a basic variable in a population screening especially during growth when physical changes and biological and emotional development occur. This is one of the first studies in northern Italy investigating differences in body shape concerns among different age-groups and sexes. The sample consisted of 1754 Italian youths aged 11-23 years. Participants were examined during a cross-sectional study. Body image perception was assessed using appropriate Body Silhouette Charts. Body Mass Index was calculated from measured height and weight. The results demonstrated age variability and sexual dimorphism in body image perception. The analysis of body image perception is a valid source of information and should be assessed in studies on youth growth, since it varies with age, sex, population, pathologies and socio-cultural environment.  相似文献

Sex differences of hemisphere asymmetry of homo- and heterotopic transcallosal responses in association cortex of 48 cats (24 male and 24 female) immobilized by tubocurarine have been studied by means of topographic EPs recordings in both hemispheres. In males left hemisphere dominates by the amplitude of homotopic and positive wave of heterotopic EPs and right hemisphere dominates by the amplitude of negative wave of heterotopic sensorimotor cortex EPs. The individual asymmetry of EPs has been observed in sensomotor cortex of females and in parietal cortex of animals of both sex. The interhemispheric asymmetry is expressed distinctly in females than in males. It is concluded that sex dimorphism is present in functional organization of associative system of (callosal and intracortical) connections in cat's neocortex projection and association areas which means its more expressed hemisphere lateralization in males with more expressed interhemispheric asymmetry of functional transcallosal connections in females.  相似文献

In conditions of tachistoscopic presentation of visual stimuli, healthy (male and female) right-handed subjects carried out a paired comparison of the stimuli presented unilaterally and in the center of the visual field. In case of recognition of images of words and objects, the number of correct answers and motor reaction time usually did not significantly differ at two interstimuli intervals (1 and 10 s). In comparing images of faces, there also were no differences by the number of reactions, and the reaction time was less at the intervals of 1 s. The left hemisphere dominated at the identification of words and female faces, the right one--at the recognition of male faces. When the right visual field was stimulated images of various classes were recognized more differentially than at the stimulation of the left visual field. The male subjects had more prominent interhemispheric differences than the females. The increase of the interstimuli interval from 1 to 10 s brought to a weakening of the functional interhemispheric asymmetry and decreasing of the differences between the male and female subjects. The obtained data show that in the processes connected with short-time memory, functional interhemispheric asymmetry is basically formed at the initial stages of the information processing.  相似文献

A major focus of the field of organismal biology is to understand how morphology impacts performance. Although the functional implications of certain aspects of shape have been widely examined, the functional implications of a related parameter, symmetry, remain mostly unknown. We used finite‐element models to examine the effects of turtle shell asymmetry on shell strength across three morphologically distinct emydid species. The goals of this study were to: 1) test the hypothesis that increased asymmetry (independent of differences in shape) is associated with increased stress levels for a given load, and thus with weaker shells, 2) ascertain how asymmetry and the position of load application interact to influence shell strength, and 3) determine how interspecific differences in shape influence the effect of asymmetry. We found that increased asymmetry does produce higher stresses for both midline and non‐midline loads. Non‐midline loads produce slightly larger and more variable stresses. Species‐specific shell shape can mitigate the effects of asymmetry; stronger shapes are potentially more resistant to the negative effects of asymmetry. Our findings indicate that changes in asymmetry associated with relatively small changes in shape can have as much of an effect on stress incurred by the shell as the changes in shape themselves. J. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) was calculated for nine paired morphometric characters in a randombred population of house mice in order to assess the effects of age, sex, and phenotypical extremeness. FA did not significantly vary between sexes for any of the characters, and age proved to be significant only for innominate length. Additionally, FA values in high extreme individuals and low extreme individuals were compared to those for intermediate individuals to discover whether extreme individuals showed increased fluctuating asymmetry (decreased developmental stability) due to increased levels of homozygosity. Differences in fluctuating asymmetry magnitudes were found between the groups, although the extreme individuals did not consistently show increased fluctuating asymmetry and FA differences also showed no significant association with the level of heritability of each character. Potential reasons for these findings are discussed.  相似文献
