Stamen numbers were counted from flowers of cultivated plumvarieties (P. domestica), seedling clones from crosses betweenvarieties, and six other Prunus species. Varieties have a widerrange of stamen number than the presumed parental species, P.spinosa and P. cerasifera, and extend from 15.3 to 33.0 stamens. Counts on varietal and seedling clones indicate genetical controlof stamen pattern; clones have uniform patterns, but differfrom one another. Annual climatic variations affect stamen number,with varieties reacting differently. There are relationshipsbetween stamen numbers and some economic characters. Stamenpatterns may be helpful as an additional diagnostic characterand for the identification of bud-sports.  相似文献

Non-dormant flower initials are laid down in the axils of successiveleaf initials as they are formed by the apical meristem of Pisumsativum L. In cultivars with a maximum capability of two flowersper raceme, the undeveloped flower meristem divides into twoportions. One forms the first flower and the other either developsinto a small protrusion on one side of the first flower or becomesthe second flower, depending on the prevailing environment.Flower development in conditions favouring single-flowered racemeswas advanced by one plastochron. Variation in the number offlowers per raceme occurs between cultivars and between environments.The number of double flowers formed was favoured by higher lightintensity (120 Js–1 m–2) and carbon dioxide concentration(330 µ11) and lower temperature (15°C). Incultivars producing more than two flowers per raceme, lowerlight intensity (60 Js–1 m–2) plus higher temperature(20°C) increased the mean number of flowers per raceme.Soluble sugar levels in all varieties were higher (36.05 mgeq glucose g–1 fresh weight) in the low temperature/highlight environment than the high temperature/low light environment(14.80 mg eq glucose g–1 fresh weight). The flowering potential and stability of 13 cultivars have beenassessed in controlled environment and in sowing date trialsin the field. A stable variety, which consistently producedtwo flowers per raceme, was identified in controlled environmentand its stability was maintained in field trials. A linear regressionof stability of flower number in the field on stability in controlledenvironment accounted for 89.6 per cent of the variance (P<5per cent), but the flowering potential in a sowing date experimentwas not related to temperature or radiation intensity.  相似文献

The effects of seed number on set, development and growth ofa fruit, and on inhibition of later-developed fruits were studiedby varying the pollen load on the stigma of sweet pepper flowers(Capsicum annuum L.). Despite much variation, a linear increasein individual fruit weight with seed number could be observed.Seed number affected the growth rate rather than the growingperiod of fruit. When seed numbers were low, the probabilityof fruit setting was positively related to seed number. However,a relatively low seed number (50–100 seeds/fruit: 20–30%of the maximum seed number) was sufficient for maximal fruitset. An increase in seed number increased the inhibitory effect ofa fruit on set and growth of later-developing fruits. As a result,when pollination treatments were applied to all the flowersof a plant, results could be quite different to those obtainedwhen only a limited number of flowers were treated. Fruit setof the second fruit was reduced by the application of a highpollen load to the first flower, even when the first fruit abortedbefore it had accumulated much dry matter. Our results suggestthat growth inhibition of the second fruit by seed number ofthe first fruit is controlled both by competition for limitedassimilates, as well as by dominance due to the production ofplant growth regulators by the developing fruit. Components of seed yield of cv. Ultra (Lupinus albus L.) andcv. Unicrop (L. angustifolius L.) were measured when grown atthree densities. The low density (10 plants m–2) Unicropyield (34 g seed per plant) was 1.8 times that of Ultra as ithad more branches, pods and seeds per pod. Ultra seeds (310mg per seed) were heavier than Unicrop seeds (180 mg). The branchingpattern of Ultra was less dependent on plant density, henceat 93 plants m–2 it gave a higher per plant yield (7.4vs 6.4 g) than Unicrop at lower densities (83 plants m–2).Density had most influence on pod formation and only small effectson seeds per pod and seed weight. Yield components on the main-steminflorescence were influenced less by density than componentson branch inflorescences. Later formed, higher order generationsof inflorescences were most affected by increased inter- andintra-plant competition. Pod numbers on the main-stem were similarfor both species. Pods formed at higher flower nodes in Unicrop,but the lower flower nodes were less fertile than those in Ultra.Node position of flowers had no influence on seed set in main-stemUnicrop pods, but pods from higher nodes in Ultra formed fewerseeds. Pseudocalanus species are important contributors to the secondaryproduction of the northern hemisphere mid- to high-latitudeoceans. In the coastal Gulf of Alaska, Pseudocalanus are presentyear round and are represented by three species. In 2001, Pseudocalanusmimus was the dominant Pseudocalanus species on the shelf duringspring and summer, comprising 30–100% of the total, whilePseudocalanus newmani dominated in Prince William Sound (10–90%).Pseudocalanus minutus were only abundant in Prince William Soundduring early spring. Egg production (by number and volume) wasa function of female prosome length and decreased from springto summer; however, significant variability was attributableto regional influences that were independent of size. For thesame sized female, P. newmani produced more eggs per clutchthan P. mimus. Pseudocalanus mimus, however, tended to havea larger mean egg size than P. newmani. Consequently, clutchvolumes of the two species were indistinguishable. Pseudocalanusegg production rates (EPRs) (eggs female–1 day–1)were lower in July and August (ca. 2–4) than April andMay (ca. 1–9), but total egg production by the population(eggs day–1) was nearly equivalent for the two time periodsdue to higher female concentrations in summer.  相似文献

Ethrel treatment at 960, 1920, and 3840 parts 10–6 tomale plants of M. nigra produced intersex and female flowers.The intersexual flowers showed various degrees of transformationof male sex organs into female. The complete female flowersproduced were similar to female controls. Plants of Abelmoschus esculentus were given a single foliarspray of chlorflurenol at 1, 10, 100, and1000 parts 10–6by a hand atomizer. Chlorflurenol increased the number of flowersat all the concentrations used except 1000 parts 10–6where a drastic reduction was noticed. Various stages of suppressionin the growth and reduction in number of stamens were seen inflowers of treated plants. Formation of stamenless flowers,i.e. pistillate flowers, was a striking influence of chlorflurenol.Chlorflurenol also increased fruit set, and therefore yield,up to 100 parts 10–6 but drastically reduced both at 1000parts 10–6. The crop growth rates and structures of three temperate foragegrasses Lolium perenne cv. S24, L. perenne cv. Reveille andFestuca arundinacea cv. S170, were examined in the field duringa summer growth period. The growth rates of the varieties wereremarkably similar at 7 g DM m–2 day–1. The angularstructures of the varieties were different and they varied duringthe experiment. However, these differences did not seem to affectcrop growth rates. Nevertheless, a decrease in the efficiencyof light energy conversion of approximately 24 per cent wasobserved after a change to a more prostrate form of canopy dueto lodging. There appeared to be an inverse relationship betweenthe number of tillers per unit ground area and the weight ofan individual stem. There were large numbers of relatively lighttillers in S24 whereas S1 70 had fewer but heavier tillers.Furthermore, S24 had many small leaves per unit ground areacompared with SI70 which had fewer longer leaves per groundarea and a slower rate of leaf appearance. There were diurnalchanges in the rates of leaf extension for all the varieties.The mean daily extension rates declined as the canopies developed.  相似文献

Genetically mediated sensitivity to the bitter taste of 6-n-propylthiouracil(PROP) has been associated with greater acuity for bitter andfor some sweet tastes. Thus far, few studies have explored therelationship between PROP taste sensitivity and hedonic responsesto bitter and sweet. In this study, 87 normal-weight young womenwere divided into PROP non-tasters (n = 18), regular tasters(n = 49), and supertasters (n = 20), based on their PROP detectionthresholds and the scaling of five suprathreshold solutionsof PROP and NaCl. Non-tasters had thresholds >1.8 x 10–4mol/l PROP. Supertasters had thresholds <3.2 x 10–5mol/l PROP and PROP/NaCl ratios >1.70. As expected, dislikeof the bitter taste of PROP was determined by its perceivedintensity, which was greater among supertasters than among regulartasters or non-tasters. Significant correlations were observedbetween PROP taste thresholds and the sum of intensity ratings(r = –0.61) and between summed intensity and summed hedonicratings (r = –0.80). PROP taste sensitivity was weaklylinked to enhanced perception of sweet taste, but did not predicthedonic responses to sucrose or to saccharin solutions. Giventhat the dislike of PROP solutions is determined by their perceivedintensity, hedonic responses to PROP solutions may provide arapid way of screening for PROP taster status. Chem. Green-gram (Phaseolus aureus) plants were treated with petro-cokedust, a paniculate pollutant of petroleum refineries, at therate of 2 g petro-coke m–2 d–1 for 40 consecutivedays between 26 and 65 d of plant age. Plant samples collectedfrom control and dusted plots were analysed with respect totranspiration rate, mineral accumulation, and contents of ascorbicacid, protein, carbohydrate, and pigments. Morphological parameters,phytomass accumulation, net primary productivity, and calorificvalues were also determined. On petro-coke treatment, transpiration rates increased at firstbut were lower in the 65 d old plants than in control plants.Accumulation of N, P, S, K, and Ca was less in treated plantsthan in the control plants at all ages. Ascorbic acid, protein,and carbohydrate contents were reduced in treated plants. Totalchlorophyll initially increased in treated plants but lateron decreased at higher cumulative doses of petro-coke. Rootand shoot lengths, number of leaves, nodules, flowers, and podswere reduced in petro-coke-treated plants.  相似文献

The carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) contents (%of dry weight) of some crustacean zooplankton were studied inthe Baltic Sea. The copepod Acartia sp. had a stable C and Ncontent (48.3 ± 0.8% C, 12.4 ± 0.2% N, C:N ratio4.5 ± 0.1). The P content was variable (1–2%),probably depending on developmental stage and season. Copepodsaccumulating fat, like Pseudocalanus minutus elongatus, hadhigher and more variable C content (50–60%), and lowerN and P content (7–12% N, 0.6–1.5% P). The highestC and lowest N and P contents were found in adult Limnocalanusmacrurus. However, the N:P ratio was apparently independentof fat content and between 14 and 27 for all copepods. The cladoceransBosmina longispina maritima and Evadne nordmanni had lower Ncontent (9.3–10.8%) and higher C:N ratio (5.1–5.7)than Acartia sp. The P content (1.2–1.4%) was similarto Acartia sp. and the N:P ratios (16–19) were in thelower range of that found for the copepods. The N:P ratio wasgenerally somewhat higher in the copepods than in seston, whichmost of the year had nearly Redfield C:N:P ratios. Potentially,nutrient recycling from crustacean zooplankton could enhanceN limitation of phytoplankton, but small stoichiometric differencessuggest that this effect is probably weak. The extent is dependenton the structure of the zooplankton community and the grossgrowth efficiencies. Acartia copepodites, which had nearly RedfieldN:P ratios, would have the opposite effect and enhance P limitationin late summer when seston N:P ratios increased.  相似文献

Background and Aims: The inflorescence of Philodendron constitutes an interestingmorphological model to analyse the phenomenon of homeosis quantitativelyat the floral level. The specific goals of this study were (1)to characterize and quantify the range of homeotic transformationin Philodendron billietiae, and (2) to test the hypothesis thatthe nature of flowers surrounding atypical bisexual flowers(ABFs) channel the morphological potentialities of atypicalbisexual flowers. Methods: Inflorescences of P. billietiae at different stages of developmentwere observed using SEM. The number of appendices in male, femaleand sterile flowers were counted on 11 young inflorescences(5–6 flowers per inflorescence). The number of staminodesand carpels on ABFs were counted on 19 inflorescences (n = 143).These data were used for regression and ANOVA analyses. Results: There was an average of 4·1 stamens per male flower,9·8 carpels per female flower and 6·8 staminodesper sterile male flower. There was an average of 7·3floral appendices per atypical flower. Staminodes and carpelsare inserted on the same whorl in ABFs. A negative exponentialrelationship was found between the average number of staminodesand the number of carpels in ABFs. If only the ABFs consistingof less than six carpels are considered, there is a linear relationshipbetween the number of carpels and the average number of staminodes.The value of the slope of the regression equation indicatesthat on average, in P. billietiae, 1·36 carpels are replacedby one staminode. Conclusions: In P. billietiae, the number of appendages in female flowersimposes a constraint on the maximum total number of appendages(carpels and staminodes) that can develop on ABFs. The quantitativeanalyses indicate that the average number of different typesof floral appendages on an ABF and the number of organs involvedin a homeotic transformation are two independent phenomena.  相似文献

Effects of time of initial cut and subsequent cutting interval(1, 2 or 4 weeks) were examined in a glasshouse during summer1988 for reproductive plants of three prairie grass cultivars(Bromus willdenowii Kunth), Westerwolds ryegrass (Lolium multiflorumLam.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Measurementswere made of tiller and leaf numbers, sites of tillering, reproductivedevelopment, and herbage quality and yields. Effect of timeof initial cutting on regrowth appeared to be independent ofstage of reproductive development and unrelated to any of themeasured plant parameters. Characteristics for each cultivaras identified during undisturbed growth prior to the initialcuts, were modified by the subsequent cutting frequencies. Perennial ryegrass had the highest yields under frequent cuttingwith high herbage quality. Westenwolds ryegrass and the prairiegrass cultivars ‘Grasslands Matua’ and ‘Primabel’had the highest yields with infrequent cutting, but lower herbagequality than in perennial ryegrass. At each cut, tiller deathin prairie grass was determined by the number of reproductivetillers, and in the ryegrasses also by the numbers of elongatedvegetative tillers. Recovery of tiller numbers was rapid andprimarily from inhibited tiller buds at the base of reproductivetillers. In prairie grass, tiller numbers were relatively unaffectedby cutting frequency, but at frequent cutting, many axillarytillers originated from vegetative tillers rather than frominhibited tiller buds at the base of reproductive tillers. The effect of tetraploidy on leaf characteristics and net gasexchange was studied in diploid (2x ) and autotetraploid (4x) ‘Valencia’ sweet orange (Citrus sinensis (L.)Osb.) and ‘Femminello’ lemon (Citrus limon (L.)Burm. f.) leaves. Comparisons between ploidy levels were madeunder high irradiance (I) in a growth chamber or low total Iin a glasshouse. Tetraploids of both species had thicker leaves,larger mesophyll cell volume and lower light transmittance thandiploids regardless of growth I. Mesophyll surface area perunit leaf area of 2x leaves was 5–15% greater than on4x leaves. Leaf thickness and mesophyll cell volume were greaterin high I leaves than low I leaves. In high I, average leafarea was similar for 2x and 4x leaves, whereas in low I it was30% greater in 4x than in 2x leaves. Nitrogen and chlorophyllconcentration per cell increased with ploidy level in both growthconditions. The ratio of chlorophyll a:b was 25% greater in2x than in 4x leaves. When net CO2assimilation rate (ACO2) wasbased on leaf area, 4x orange leaves had 24–35% lowerACO2than their diploids. There were no significant differencesin ACO2between 2x and 4x orange or lemon leaves when expressedon a per cell basis. Overall, lower ACO2per unit leaf area oftetraploids was related to increase in leaf thickness, largermesophyll cell volume, the decrease in mesophyll area exposedto internal air spaces, and the lower ratio between cell surfaceto cell volume. Such changes probably increased the resistanceto CO2diffusion to the site of carboyxlation in the chloroplasts. To investigate the effect of intraspecific competition on floweringin Brassica napus‘Westar’, a series of 30 pots wasestablished that spanned a range of one–96 plants perpot. In each pot, the following attributes of individual flowerswere quantified: petal length; petal width; stamen length; pistillength; pollen production; diameter of pollen grains; and nectarproduction. Certain plants contained a transgenic marker thatenabled the vigour of their pollen to be quantified by screeningthe progeny from post-pollination trials against conventionalmale competitors. Plant size was strongly affected by plantdensity; plants in the lowest density pots comprised ten-timesmore dry biomass than individuals in the highest density pots.However, none of the attributes of individual flowers variedwith density. In contrast, the number of flowers per plant declinedrapidly with density. In the face of resource scarcity, theplants apparently conserved flower size rather than flower number.There was no difference in the response to density between transgenicand conventional plants, but transgenic plants obtained morefertilizations than expected in post-pollination competitionagainst conventional competitors. A separate experiment demonstratedthat B. napus is, nevertheless, capable of plasticity in certainflower attributes (petal size, stamen length) in response todefoliation. Explanations for the stability of flower size relativeto flower number are discussed. The cell composition of the planktonic cyanobacteria, Oscillatoriaagardhii (Gomont) and Oscillatona redekei (van Goor), was comparedfor cultures grown under nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) limitation,and light climates which were energy (E) limited (photoperiods3:21 and 6:18 light:dark (LD) and irradiances 12–153 µmolm–2s–1). Increases in carbohydrate/protein ratio(CHO/Prot) and declines in chlorophyll a (Cha) and phycocyanin(PC) resulted from N and P limitation. N-, P- and E-limitedcultures could be distinguished on the basis of P content andthe ratio of PC/Cha. The P content range of 0.1–0.55%of ash-free dry weight (AFDW) for P-limited cultures was lowerthan that for N- and E-limited cultures (0.56–2.2 %AFDW).Cultures limited by N were distinguishable from E-limited cellsby lower PC/Cha ratios, ranging from 0 to 4.08, compared to3.9–6.9 for E-limited cells. Under the 3:21 LD cycle,the minimum PC/Cha ratio of E-limited cells was 4.5. Increasesin the CHO/Prot ratios were proportional to the difference betweenthe nutrient-limited growth rate and the non-nutrient-limitedgrowth rate. A comparison of the composition of the two speciesshowed greater accumulation of carbohydrate by O.agardhii undernutrient-limiting conditions, but that O. redekei had higherlevels of protein, chlorophyll a and phycocyanin and, in theabsence of P limitation, higher P contents than O.agardhii.  相似文献

The distribution of cell numbers and daughter colonies was determinedin a population of Volvox aureus from Malham Tarn, North Yorkshireduring summer and autumn. The following ranges were recorded:cell number, 272–2340; colony diameter, 174–520µm; daughter colony number, 2–10 (mode 6). Culturedmaterial gave significantly higher values than these. A strongpositive correlation was found between cell number per colonyand the number of asexual daughters but no correlation was foundbetween the number of daughters and mother colony diameter. The results are discussed with reference to the theoreticalpacking of spheres, which the daughters approximate. The numberof daughters and their size upon liberation was also consideredin relation to grazing pressures and the relative loss of cellscaused by the disintegration of the mother colony. Effects of Cross-pollination and Flower Removal on Fruit Set in Macadamia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Macadamia racemes were cross-pollinated and had flowers removedto determine whether manipulation of initial fruit set wouldaffect final fruit set or yield. Examination of flowers collected7 d after pollination indicated that the cross-pollination treatmentgenerally induced a small (13-19%) but significant increasein the number of pollen grains per stigma. All flowers possessedsome pollen grains, but in all cases cross-pollination approximatelydoubled the percentage of flowers with a pollen tube at thebase of the style (42-68% of flowers on cross-pollinated racemescompared with 21-35% of flowers on control racemes). Fruit setafter 14 d was always improved by cross-pollination, and thistranslated into increased final fruit numbers on two out offour occasions. In these two cases, kernel weights were increasedby 24 and 31% in the cross-pollinated treatments. This indicatesa possible xenic (paternal parent) effect in macadamia. Flowerremoval resulted in retention of a greater percentage of flowersas fruits, so that only severe reductions in flower number decreasedfinal fruit numbers. The relative importance of explant type, genotype and growthregulator regime in the determination of shoot regenerationfrequencies from complex explants of Brassica napus L. has beenevaluated. Cotyledon, hypocotyl and stem sections taken fromone spring (Westar) and three winter (Ariana, Cobra, Libravo)varieties of B. napus were cultured on three different growthregulator regimes, 0.5 mg dm–3 NAA + 2.0mg dm–3BAP, 0.5 mg dm–3 NAA + 4.0mg dm–3 BAP and 1.0mgdm–3 NAA + 4.0mg dm–3 BAP. The most significanteffects on shoot regeneration were due to explant type and variety.The regeneration from stem segments was not only two to threetimes higher than from hypocotyls or cotyledons, in all varieties,but the response was also more uniform across the varieties.The explant effect accounted for 44–95% of the regenerationresponse. In contrast, the contribution of growth regulatorregime was negligible. Although the growth regulator regimeas an independent effect was unimportant, regeneration fromboth Ariana and Libravo was significantly affected by the interactionof genotype with growth regulator regime. The importance ofboth the high shoot regeneration frequency from stem segmentsand the relative uniformity of response across the four testedgenotypes is discussed with respect to the potential benefitsof using this explant source in Agrobacterium-based transformationexperiments. The structure and ultrastructure of the nectaries of the monoeciousspecies Ecballium elaterium were studied. Large differencesin size and structure of the nectaries were observed in thetwo genders of flowers, those of the staminate flowers beingmuch larger and more developed than those of the pistillateflowers. The latter do not secrete measurable amounts of nectar.In the nectariferous cells, especially of the staminate flowers,numerous plasmodesmata are present. The pre-nectar originatingin the phloem is stored in the plastids of the nectariferouscells primarily as starch grains. The nectar appears to be exudedfrom the nectary via modified stomata. Very small insects ofthe order Hemiptera were found to dwell inside the flowers ofthe two genders, but in different numbers; their number in thestaminate flowers was more than twice that in the pistillateflowers.
