Environmental stresses, particularly water deficit, predispose eucalypt trees to attack by the eucalyptus longhorned borer, Phoracantha semipunctata F. (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). Our experiments with potted eucalypts revealed that reduced tree water potential was associated with lower resistance to colonization by neonate P. semipunctata, but the linear relationship between water potential and colonization success was reversed at higher larval densities. There was no indication that the bark exudate “kino” served to defend trees from borer attack. Larvae were not able to colonize the cambium of eucalypt logs with high bark moisture, and survival was low under high moisture conditions in artificial hosts composed of pure cellulose. In trees and cut logs with moist bark, larvae failed to reach the cambium, feeding instead in poorer-quality tissues just beneath the bark surface. Our findings suggest that variation in resistance of eucalypts to attack by the borer is associated with moisture content of the bark. Received: 2 September 1998 / Accepted: 8 January 1999  相似文献

In the eucalyptus woodborer, Phoracantha semipunctata, responses from single receptor neurones to host ( Eucalyptus globulus) and non-host ( Pinus pinaster, Olea europeae) plant odours were examined, using gas chromatography linked with electrophysiological recordings. Thirty-two compounds elicited responses that appeared as increased firing rates correlating with the elution of the active components. A subset of neurones classified as type A ( n=17) responded to one compound, a second subset B ( n=15) responded to two compounds and a third subset C ( n=9) responded to three or more compounds. For each neurone of type B or C, the active chemicals were structurally related. Neurones responding to monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and non-terpenoids, respectively, showed non-overlapping response spectra, whereas neurones within one chemical group showed some overlap. The results suggest that most neurones, which receive information about plant odours, are narrowly rather than broadly tuned, each specialised for the detection of one or two related compounds. Although most neurones responded to compounds released by host and non-host species, a few responded specifically to compounds of only one species. This suggests a chemical "fingerprint" mechanism for discrimination between odour blends of the different plants, where only a few compounds may be specific for a particular species or individual.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Adult winged forms of Aphis fabae Scop., the spring migrants (fundatrigeniae; alate virginoparae), the summer migrants (alate virginoparae) and the autumn migrants (gynoparae), were flown in an automated vertical wind tunnel, with a small green target presented every 60 s. On average, targeted flight developed in the spring and summer migrants after 19 and 15 min, respectively. However, in autumn migrants targeted flight occurred after 184 min of flight. No evidence of target approach was found up to 30 min prior to this time, although some movement towards the target was observed in the 30 min before the first response of autumn migrants, suggesting that a gradual change from migratory to targeted flight occurred. No correlation was found between aphid weight and the time to first response for spring or summer migrants, but a positive correlation was found for autumn migrants. Flight patterns of autumn migrants, in the absence of a target, are described and compared with flight patterns previously reported for summer migrants.  相似文献

The ultrastructure and distribution pattern of two types of basiconic sensilla (I and II) on the antennal flagellum of both sexes of Phoracantha semipunctata (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) was investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscope. Both types are thin-walled multiporous sensilla and occur mostly along the anterior border of the Fl1-Fl6 flagellomeres, while on the distal flagellomeres (Fl7-Fl9) they are more evenly distributed on both surfaces. Clusters of sensilla basiconica II are found on the distal half of the anterior border of the Fl1-Fl6 flagellomeres. Sensilla basiconica I have one bipolar sensory cell with a branched distal dendrite, whereas the sensilla basiconica II contain two bipolar sensory cells with branched distal dendrites. No sexual dimorphism was found in the fine structure and distribution pattern of both types of sensilla basiconica. Responses from single sensory cells to host and non-host plant odors were examined, using gas chromatography linked with electrophysiological recordings. Most cells associated with each sensillum type were narrowly tuned, each specialized for the detection of one or two chemically related compounds. No clear functional distinction between the two morphological types of sensilla was found, although the few cells that responded specifically to non-host volatiles were associated with sensilla basiconica II.  相似文献

Responses of host-seeking female Culicoides impunctatus (Goetghebuer) (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) to acetone, carbon dioxide and 1-octen-3-ol were measured in a wind tunnel. Carbon dioxide, presented as a filamentous plume, increased upwind flight in a dose-dependent manner, up to 0.09% concentration. A homogenous CO2 plume elicited similar upwind responses at concentrations up to 0.09%, whereas higher plume concentrations (> 0.1%) induced erratic responses with a suppression of upwind flight. Bovine equivalent concentrations of acetone (1.5 x 10(-6)g/l) and 1-octen-3-ol (1.3 x 10(-8)g/) failed to induce any significant upwind response when tested alone. In the presence of CO2, however, 1-octen-3-ol showed highly significant increases in upwind responses at concentrations of 1.3 x 10(-1) - 10(-8)g/l. Mixtures of CO2+ acetone also enhanced upwind flight at 1.5 x 10(-9)g/l. High tunnel concentrations of both 1-octen-3-ol and acetone inhibited upwind responses. These findings are discussed in relation to host finding by C. impunctatus and known mechanisms by which upwind flight is initiated and arrested at high odour concentrations.  相似文献

The responses of gravid female cabbage root flies, Delia radicum (L.), to brassica odour and allylisothiocyanate (ANCS) presented in either a discrete plume or uniformly dispersed in air passing through a wind tunnel were investigated. Relatively fast, straight flights occurred in diffuse odour conditions, while in discrete plumes flights were slower with more frequent changes of direction.Flies maintained a constant ground speed and track angle over the straight legs of their flight tracks in two different wind speeds by changing air speed and course. As flies approached an odour source in a discrete plume ground speed was progressively decreased and frequency of turning increased but track angles remained constant. This was achieved by reducing air speed and course angle.Flies released at increasing distances from an odour source moved upwind towards it in a series of short flights, the number relating to distance. The results are discussed in the light of current theories of anemotactic odour source locations and a sequence of orientated behaviour for host plant finding is proposed.

ABSTRACT. Flying male spruce budworm ( Choristoneura fumiferana [Clem.]) moths responding to virgin females and to synthetic pheromone in a wind tunnel maintained a constant rate of upwind progress when held by moving optomotor cues at a constant distance from the pheromone source. When allowed to progress upwind to the source, however, they slowed their upwind speed progressively as they approached it. They also adjusted their flight speed to maintain similar rates of upwind progress at different wind speeds.  相似文献

Anemotaxis in the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis (both well-fed and starved), has previously been studied on a wire grid under slight turbulent airflow conditions yielding weak, yet distinct, gradients in wind speed and odour concentration (Sabelis and Van der Weel 1993). Such conditions might have critically influenced the outcome of the study. We repeated these experiments, under laminar airflow conditions on a flat surface in a wind tunnel, thereby avoiding variation in wind speed and odour concentration. Treatments for starved and well-fed mites were (1) still-air without herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPV) (well-fed mites only), (2) an HIPV-free air stream, and (3) an air stream with HIPV (originating from Lima bean plants infested by two-spotted spider mites, Tetranychus urticae). Well-fed mites oriented in random directions in still-air without HIPV. In an air stream, starved mites always oriented upwind, whether plant odours were present or not. Well-fed mites oriented downwind in an HIPV-free air stream, but in random directions in an air stream with HIPV. Only under the last treatment our results differed from those of Sabelis and Van der Weel (1993).  相似文献

In a wind‐tunnel study, the upwind flight and source location of female Aedes aegypti to plumes of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas and odour from human feet is tested. Both odour sources are presented singly and in combination. Flight upwind along the plumes is evident for both CO2 and odour from human feet when the odours are presented alone. Similarly, both odour sources are located by more than 70% of mosquitoes in less than 3 min. When both CO2 and odour from human feet are presented simultaneously in two different choice tests (with plumes superimposed or with plumes separated), there is no evidence that females orientate along the plume of CO2 and only a few mosquitoes locate its source. Rather, the foot odour plume is navigated and the source of foot odour is located by over 80% of female Ae. aegypti. When a female is presented a plume of CO2 within a broad plume of human foot odour of relatively low concentration, the source of CO2 is not located; instead, flight is upwind in the diffuse plume of foot odour. Although upwind flight by Ae. aegypti at long range is presumably induced by CO2 and the threshold of response to skin odours is lowered, our findings suggest that, once females have arrived near a prospective human host, upwind orientation and landing are largely governed by the suite of human odours, whereas orientation is no longer influenced by CO2.  相似文献

This study investigated the interaction between carbon dioxide (CO(2) ) and human foot odour on activation, upwind orientation and landing of host-seeking female Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) (Diptera: Culicidae) in a wind tunnel. More mosquitoes landed on warmed glass beads coated with foot odour than on clean beads; adding a plume of 4% CO(2) did not influence the proportion of mosquitoes landing. A second experiment used 3-dimensional video tracking to assess flight performance. Activation was more rapid with CO(2) and with CO(2) + foot odour than with clean air or with foot odour alone. Upwind flights were fastest with CO(2) and with clean air, and slowest with foot odour; the CO(2) + foot odour treatment overlapped the previous three treatments in significance. Flight headings tended more towards due upwind with CO(2) and with clean air than with CO(2) + foot odour or with foot odour alone. In both experiments, many mosquitoes flew upwind in clean air. There was little evidence of females changing course upon entering or exiting the CO(2) plume or reacting to foot odour during flight.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The flight of male Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Noctuidae) towards a pheromone source was recorded during the early part of the night using a cine camera and an image intensifier. The cine films were analysed frame by frame to produce flight tracks from which it was possible to calculate the mean advance rate of moths towards the pheromone source and their projected ground speed, for a series of positions downwind of the source. As wind speed was measured the moth's air speed was also estimated. The moths compensated for changes in wind speed by varying their air speed, hence maintaining a ground speed independent of wind speed. The ground speed itself was found to decrease as moths flew closer to the pheromone source.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Summer (virginoparae) and autumn (gynoparae) winged forms of Aphis fabae were flown in an automated flight chamber for up to 100 min, while being exposed to a small green target at their own level for 5 s of each minute. Virginoparae climbed more slowly than gynoparae and responded to the target by turning towards it throughout experimental flights. Gynoparae, on the other hand, were almost completely unresponsive to the target, although some individuals began to respond after an hour or more of flight. The differences between the two migratory forms are discussed with reference to previous work on aphid flight behaviour in the field and the laboratory.  相似文献

Abstract. The flight behaviour of Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) in odour plumes containing carbon dioxide, acetone or l-octen-3-ol was assessed from video recordings. A downwind bias was evident in clean air, whereas all three test chemicals elicited upwind anemotaxis. Response thresholds were ∼0.006% for CO2, between 0.001 and 0.01 μg/l for acetone, and ∼0.0002 u.g/1 for l-octen-3-ol. Sinuosity (° cm-1) and angular velocity (° s-1) increased with C02 concentration, but velocity (cm s"1) decreased. Similar, but less clear effects were observed for acetone and l-octen-3-ol.  相似文献

Abstract. To test the hypothesis that tsetse flies use visual input from the apparent movement of the ground to assess wind direction while in flight, Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood females were video- recorded in a wind-tunnel as they entered, in cross-wind flight, a broad plume of simulated host odour (C02 at c. 0.05%). The tunnel (2.3 times 1.2 m wide) generated winds up to 0.25 m s-1 and had a strongly patterned floor that could be moved upwind or downwind to increase or decrease the visual input due to wind drift. Flight tracks were analysed for speed, direction relative to the wind, and angle of turn. Mean groundspeeds were c. 1.8 m s-1. In control measurements in still air (with or without odour) flies turned 50:50 'upwind': 'downwind'. With a 0.25 m s-1 odour-perme- ated wind, 79% turned upwind, and c. 70% left view flying upwind. When the floor was moved at 0.25 m s-1 upwind (to mimic the visual input from the ground due to a 0.5 m s_-1 wind), the strength of this response increased. If instead the floor was moved downwind, faster than the wind speed (to mimic the visual input due to a wind from the opposite direction), 59% turned downwind and c. 70% left view flying downwind, and thus away from the source (though progressing 'upwind' in terms of the visual input from apparent ground pattern movement). Upwind turns were on average significantly larger than downwind turns. It is concluded that tsetse navigate up host odour plumes in flight by responding to the visual flow fields due to their movement over the ground (optomotor anemotaxis), even in weak winds blowing at a fraction of their groundspeed.  相似文献

Abstract. The ability of male spruce budworm moths, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.), to orientate to and locate virgin female moths was investigated in a laboratory wind tunnel. When presented with two caged ‘target female’ moths, more than 99% of the male moths locked on and flew directly to the females. When confined for 3 h before release, downwind of a three-dimensional array of thirty-five evenly distributed female moths (a density of 40/m3), over 90% of the males still successfully oriented to one or another of the females, although not always to the target females. With an array of thirty-five septa containing either E-11-tetradecenyl acetate on E-11-tetradecenol there was no visible change in behaviour; >90% of the males flew directly to the two target females, which indicates that neither the acetate nor the alcohol has potential for mating disruption. An array of thirty-five septa containing a 955 blend of E- and Z-11-tetradecenal, the main components of the spruce budworm sex pheromone, significantly reduced the numbers of male moths able to locate the target females, and effects were concentration-dependent. The highest concentration, which gave a release rate similar to that of a calling female, produced the same level of disruption as the thirty-five females, but sensory fatigue became a factor in addition to ‘false trail following’. Lower concentrations were significantly less effective, with no evidence of sensory fatigue. At all concentrations significant numbers of males flew to the septa (false trail following), but when male moths were left uncaged in the tunnel for a further 3h, most eventually located the females. This suggests that false trail following alone will not prevent mating. The level of disruption was not improved by the addition of 2% tetradecanal to the 955 blend. Similar levels of disruption to the 955 blend were obtained with an 80:20 blend. A 5050 blend still caused a significant amount of false trail following, but less than the other blends. The ability of male spruce budworm to orientate to off-blend trails was enhanced if the males were first exposed to the natural, female-produced pheromone.  相似文献

Abstract Free-flying wild tsetse flies ( Glossina pallidipes Aust. and G. m. morsitans Westw.) were video recorded in Zimbabwe as they flew within an artificial host odour plume at 3, 7 or 15 m from the source, or in no odour, with and without a 0.75 m2 vertical, black visual target present aligned with the wind. With no visual target present, flights in odour were strongly biased upwind, and in the absence of odour strongly biased downwind. With the target present, between 16% and 40% of the upwind approaching flies responded visually as they passed the target, by circling it, in proportion to the proximity of the source (taken to be proportional to the mean odour concentration). Crosswind approaching flies (for whom the target will have been visible for some metres away) circled more frequently (34–56%), but without obvious correlation with the odour concentration. Circling flies also responded orthokinetically, by slowing down as they passed the target. The departure directions relative to the wind of flies leaving the target were significantly affected by the odour concentration. At 3 m they left the target in all directions, except possibly avoiding due upwind. At 7 m they left with an obliquely upwind bias, but at 15 m and also in no odour, they left with a strong crosswind bias.  相似文献

Abstract The orientation behaviour of Trichogramma egg parasitoids (T.evanescens Westwood and T.pretiosum Riley) in response to the sex pheromone of their noctuid hosts {Mamestra brassicae L. and Heliothis tea (Boddie)) was investigated in a wind tunnel. Wasps were released on platforms which served as models of leaves, and were exposed to overhead light and an air stream that was either clean or loaded with host sex pheromone. The wasps exhibited: upwind anemotaxis, which was not affected by odour; odour-modulated positive phototaxis; and odour-induced inverse orthokinesis. Compared with clean air, residence times, walking times and path lengths on a platform were higher in pheromone-loaded air than in clean air. In pheromone-loaded air, walking velocity was reduced. During locomotion on a horizontal platform, net movement was upwind, regardless of the presence or absence of pheromone in the air. On a platform inclined at 45o, anemotaxis appeared offset by positive phototaxis. If wasps were released on top of a glass rod above a platform, host sex pheromone caused wasps to land shortly after take-off. These results are used to explain higher rates of parasitism of moth eggs in pheromone-treated plots in earlier field experiments.  相似文献
