This article traces the history of the Annual International Symposium on Respiratory Psychophysiology from its origins in the late 1970s at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, U.K., to the September 1993 symposium in London, U.K. (sponsored by the Department of Medicine of the Westminster and Charing Cross Medical School), where the formation of the International Society for the Advancement of Respiratory Psychophysiology (ISARP) was announced, along with plans for a new, associated journal, Breathing Research and Therapy.The workshops, symposia, participants, and publications generated since the first formal meeting in 1981 are listed. This article also provides a summary of the 1993 workshops and a request for information concerning membership and future meetings of ISARP.  相似文献

This article provides a review of selected presentations and events that highlighted the annual meeting of the International Society for the Advancement of Respiratory Psychophysiology (ISARP) and the 14th International Symposium on Respiratory Psychophysiology, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, October 1995. The meeting, which was scheduled as a satellite to the 35th annual meeting of the Society for Psychophysiological Research, included two workshops (Diana M. Innocenti on Identification of Individual Breathing Patterns and Introduction to the Reeducation of Dysfunctional Patterns in Hyperventilation, Asthma, and Emphysema and Richard N. Gevirtz on Respiratory and Psychophysiological Factors in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Functional Cardiac and Panic Disorders), two symposia (one on Breathing Retraining: Issues and Applications and one on Capnography and Hyperventilatory Hemodynamics), three invited addresses (Hans Folgering on Rehabilitation of Patients with Exercise Hypoxemia; David Stubbing on Assessing Impairment, Disability, and Handicap in Chronic Lung Disease; and Robert Banzett on Hypercapnia-Induced Air Hunger), three panel sessions (one on Respiratory Psychophysiology of Airway Obstruction, one on Applied Respiratory Psychophysiology, and one on Hyperventilation and Panic: Psychological Aspects), and a poster session.  相似文献

Altered breathing pattern is an aspect of dysfunctional breathing but few standardised techniques exist to evaluate it. This study investigates a technique for evaluating and quantifying breathing pattern, called the Manual Assessment of Respiratory Motion (MARM) and compares it to measures performed with Respiratory Induction Plethysmography (RIP). About 12 subjects altered their breathing and posture while 2 examiners assessed their breathing using the MARM. Simultaneous measurements with RIP were taken. Inter-examiner agreement and agreement between MARM and RIP were assessed. The ability of the measurement methods to differentiate between diverse breathing and postural patterns was compared. High levels of agreement between examiners were found with the MARM for measures of the upper rib cage relative to lower rib cage/abdomen motion during breathing but not for measures of volume. The measures of upper rib cage dominance during breathing correlated with similar measures obtained from RIP. Both RIP and MARM measures methods were able to differentiate between abdominal and thoracic breathing patterns, but only MARM was able to differentiate between breathing changes occurring as result of slumped versus erect sitting posture. This study suggests that the MARM is a reliable clinical tool for assessing breathing pattern.  相似文献

Diaphragmatic breathing is included as an important component of relaxation training protocols. In the present study, we report on the effectiveness of a simple behavioral technique to illustrate that choices of tight, restraining clothing significantly affect the inhalation volume of the breathing pattern. This study investigates the use of the incentive inspirometer to observe the effects of tight versus loose clothing on inhalation volume with 17 volunteer subjects. All had been trained in the use of the incentive inspirometer and slow diaphragmatic breathing (SDB) techniques. Inhalation volumes in the studies were measured with a 4000-ml incentive inspirometer and were recorded for one or two sequential breaths using SDB before and after loosening restrictive clothing. Loosening the subjects' clothing significantly increased inhalation volume. The results indicate that tight clothing significantly interferes with diaphragmatic breathing. We suggest that the demonstration of the effect of tight versus loose clothing can increase the clinician's awareness of the effects of clothing on breathing patterns. The technique also facilitates the acquisition of diaphragmatic breathing skills, and may raise the client's awareness that choices such as clothing can directly affect physiology.We gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Richard Steiner, Ph.D. for his comments and help with the statistical analysis in this article. Summary The parenchyma of the Harderian gland of the domestic duck consists of numerous tubular terminal portions, lined by a simple columnar epithelium. Its secretory surface is increased by intratubular folds. Within the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells secretory granules are observed. Polysaccharides of different nature are demonstrated. Strikingly, all centrally located cells contain a periodate reactive mucin. The successive administration of the PAS reaction and of Alcian Blue reveals the coexistence of acid and neutral mucins in the same cells. A metachromatic reaction of the mucosubstances at pH 1.0 was observed and the presence of acid sulfated groups in the Harderian gland, as demonstrated byAlcian Blue at pH 0.5, thereby confirmed. This study investigates the effects of partial exhalation to feelings of anxiety. Thirty five volunteer subjects (14 male, 21 female, mean age 40.6) were first trained in slow diaphragmatic breathing (SDB). Then subjects rated their anxiety levels on a scale from 1 (none) to 5 (extreme) in sequential conditions of SDB, 70% subjective exhalation, and SDB. During the 70% subjective exhalation phase, subjects were instructed to breathe and limit their exhalation to 70% of the inhaled volume during each consecutive breath. The International Workshop on the Molecular Biology of the Stress Response organized by the Cell Stress Society International was held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on May 27–30, 2012, as part of the development of the Latin American Chapter of the Society, a superb initiative headed by Drs. Antonio De Maio and Larry Hightower. The meeting took place in the wonderful facilities of the Pontifícia Universidade do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) and was warmly chaired by Professor Cristina Bonorino. Thirty-four invited speakers presented their work to more than 200 scientists and, even more importantly, to 150 registered students, who were the main beneficiaries of the meeting. The first day of the workshop was dedicated to an educational program for students, young investigators, and participants who were unfamiliar with the field of molecular chaperones and the stress response. Speakers in this pre-workshop were Dr. Harm Kampinga, Dr. Lea Sistonen, Dr. Larry Hightower, Dr. Ivor Benjamin, Dr. Daniel Ciocca, and Dr. Linda Hendershot. The International Symposium entitled "Germ Cells, Epigenetics, Reprogramming, and Embryonic Stem Cells" was organized by Norio Nakatsuji (Kyoto University) and Hiromitsu Nakauchi (University of Tokyo) in Kyoto, Japan (November 15-18, 2005). This study was designed to evaluate the long-term effects of paced diaphragmatic breathing on subjects who reported functional cardiac symptoms and who also demonstrated associated signs of hyperventilation syndrome. Subjects were a representative sample composed of 10 out of the original 41 subjects who had participated three years previously in a study designed to evaluate the short-term effects of breathing retraining on functional cardiac symptoms and respiratory parameters (respiratory rate and end-tidal carbon dioxide). The results of this follow-up study indicate that breathing retraining had lasting effects on both respiratory parameters measured. Subjects evidenced significantly higher end-tidal carbon dioxide levels and lower respiratory rates when compared to pretreatment levels measured three years earlier. Subjects also continued to report a decrease in the frequency of functional cardiac symptoms when compared to pretreatment levels. We conclude that breathing retraining has lasting effects on respiratory physiology and is highly correlated with a reduction in reported functional cardiac symptoms.We would like to thank the Marquette Company for the use of their end-tidal CO2 equipment. The effect of right, left, and alternate nostril yoga breathing (i.e., RNYB, LNYB, and ANYB, respectively) were compared with breath awareness (BAW) and normal breathing (CTL). Autonomic and respiratory variables were studied in 21 male volunteers with ages between 18 and 45 years and experience in the yoga breathing practices between 3 and 48 months. Subjects were assessed in five experimental sessions on five separate days. The sessions were in fixed possible sequences and subjects were assigned to a sequence randomly. Each session was for 40 min; 30 min for the breathing practice, preceded and followed by 5 min of quiet sitting. Assessments included heart rate variability, skin conductance, finger plethysmogram amplitude, breath rate, and blood pressure. Following RNYB there was a significant increase in systolic, diastolic and mean pressure. In contrast, the systolic and diastolic pressure decreased after ANYB and the systolic and mean pressure were lower after LNYB. Hence, unilateral nostril yoga breathing practices appear to influence the blood pressure in different ways. These effects suggest possible therapeutic applications.  相似文献

As the name reflects, integrative plant biology is the core topic of JIPB. In the past few years JIPB has been pursuing the development of this area, to assist the scientific community to bring together all possible research tools to understand plant growth, development and stress responses in micro- and macro-scales. As part of these efforts, JIPB and Yantai University organized the 1st International Symposium on Integrative Plant Biology in the seaside town of Yantai during August 10-12,2009 (Figure 1). To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Society of Melanoma Research and the first International Melanoma Research Congress held in June of 2003, we have described in brief, how the Society for Melanoma Research (SMR) began, the purpose, goals, and governance of the SMR, and how the society has evolved to support new melanoma researchers. In celebration of the immense progress in treating melanoma patients over the last 20 years and the impact of the SMR on these advances, we have highlighted memories and insight from early SMR members and founders.  相似文献

Summary The morphology of the gills of a primitive air breather (Amia calva) was examined by light microscopy of semithin sections of gill filaments, and gill perfusion pathways were identified by scanning-electron microscopic analysis of corrosion replicas prepared by intravascular injection of methyl methacrylate. The arrangement of gill filaments and respiratory lamellae is similar to that of teleosts with the exception of an interfilamental support bar that is fused to the outer margins of lamellae on adjacent filaments. The prebranchial vasculature is also similar to that of teleosts, whereas the postbranchial circulation of arches III and IV is modified to permit selective perfusion of the air bladder. Gill filaments contain three distinct vascular systems: (1) the respiratory circulation which receives the entire cardiac output and perfuses the secondary lamellae; (2) a nutrient system that arises from the postlamellar circulation and perfuses filamental tissues; (3) a network of unknown function consisting of subepithelial sinusoids surrounding afferent and efferent margins of the filament and traversing the filament beneath the interlamellar epithelium. Prelamellar arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs) are rare, postlamellar AVAs are common especially at the base of the filament where they form a dense network of small tortuous vessels before coalescing into a large filamental nutrient artery. Unlike in most teleosts, the outer vascular margins of the lamellae are embedded in the interfilamental support bar and become the sole vasculature of this tissue. Arterial-arterial lamellar bypass vessels were not observed. Previously observed decreases in oxygen transfer across the gills during air breathing can be explained only by redistribution of blood flow between or within the respiratory lamellae.Supported by NSF Grant No. PCM 79-23073The author wishes to thank Miss K. The 9th International Symposium on Tardigrada took place in Tampa, Florida, USA from 28 July to 1 August 2003. Fifty-four participants representing thirteen countries attended and there were fifty-two presentations of which fourteen were chosen for the publication in these proceedings. Topics include cryptobiosis, ecology, taxonomy and systematics of tardigrades. * This symposiumvolume is dedicated to Nigel Marley (Fig. 4) for his courage and persistence in pursuing research on tardigrades, despite ongoing medical challenges. His optimism and positive attitude are an inspiration to all of us, and his willingness to help other tardigradologists is gratefully acknowledged and appreciated.  相似文献

Ciliated protists have attracted wide interest among researchers from the Indian subcontinent in the last few years. An International Symposium on Ciliate Biology (ISCB) 2018 was held on 04–06 April 2018 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, India. The symposium represented a synergy with International Research Coordination Network for Biodiversity of Ciliates (IRCN‐BC), an affiliate society of International Society of Protistologists (ISOP). The symposium provided a platform for Indian and International delegates to exchange knowledge, present their latest research findings, and establish collaborations as well as creating a networking opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Nine foreign delegates from 5 countries and 300 Indian delegates actively participated in the event which included 22 oral and 57 poster presentations.  相似文献

This dedicated issue of Chronobiology International is devoted to the selected proceedings of the 20th International Symposium on Shift Work and Working Time held in Stockholm, Sweden, 28 June to 1 July 2011. It constitutes the fifth such issue of the journal since 2004 dedicated to the selected proceedings to the meetings of the Working Time Society. The key theme of the 20th Symposium was "Biological Mechanisms, Recovery, and Risk Management in the 24-h Society." The collection of papers of this dedicated issue represents the best of contemporary research on the effects of night and rotating shift schedules on worker health and safety. The contents cover such topics as sleep restriction, injuries, health, and performance of night work and rotating shiftwork, plus light treatment as a countermeasure against the circadian disruption of shiftwork. The majority of the papers are observational field studies, including some of large sample size, and three studies are well-designed laboratory experiments.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Working Time Society (WTS), and the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) Scientific Committee on Shiftwork and Working Time, are twin organisations focused on conducting research, and informing practice, regarding the impact of work hours in general, and shiftwork in particular, on the efficiency, productivity, safety, well-being, health, and biological rhythms, of employees. Every 2–3 years since 1969, the WTS and ICOH have conducted a series of international symposia in Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, and South America. The purpose of these symposia is to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge, and the discussion of contested issues, with researchers, employee representatives, regulators, and employers. The most recent symposium in this series – the 23rd International Symposium on Shiftwork and Working Time, entitled “Toward a Global Consensus” – was held on 19–23 June 2017, at Yulara, Australia, near Uluru. Since 2004, Chronobiology International has released a special issue after each symposium, and that tradition continues with a special issue that includes 17 contributions based on a selection of the 128 papers that were presented at the most recent symposium. Here, we provide an overview of the papers that comprise the special issue, and we briefly comment on the implications of the findings for shiftworkers and their employers.  相似文献

Supported by National Science Foundation (NSF), International Society of Intelligent Biological Medicine (ISIBM), International Journal of Computational Biology and Drug Design and International Journal of Functional Informatics and Personalized Medicine, IEEE 7th Bioinformatics and Bioengineering attracted more than 600 papers and 500 researchers and medical doctors. It was the only synergistic inter/multidisciplinary IEEE conference with 24 Keynote Lectures, 7 Tutorials, 5 Cutting-Edge Research Workshops and 32 Scientific Sessions including 11 Special Research Interest Sessions that were designed dynamically at Harvard in response to the current research trends and advances. Summary Evidence is presented in support of the hypothesis that a basic component underlies the subjective experience of the EEG alpha state. Corrective commands to the oculomotor system, causing movement in extrinsic eye muscles and lens adjustment, suppress occipital alpha. Somatic commands to many muscle groups block or suppress central alpha, hence the absence of such commands may be the precondition for an altered state of consciousness that can be repeatedly demonstrated by alpha feedback.Presented in part at the meeting of the Biofeedback Society, New Orleans, La., November 24–25, 1970.The author wishes to express his appreciation to Dr. Thomas B.
