A retrospective study of the course and outcome of trichinellosis in a series of 50 patients hospitalized at the Institute for Infectious and Tropical Diseases in Belgrade between 2001 and 2008 was performed. Clinical diagnosis of trichinellosis was based upon the patients' clinical history, symptoms and signs, and eosinophilia. The occurrence of cases showed a strong seasonality (P < 0.0001). The incubation period ranged between one and 33 days. The mean time between onset of symptoms and admission was nine days. Family outbreaks were the most frequent. Smoked pork products were the dominant source of infection (76%). Fever was the most frequent clinical manifestation (90%), followed by myalgia (80%) and periorbital edema (76%). 43 patients were examined serologically and 72% of them had anti-Trichinella antibodies. Eosinophilia and elevated levels of serum CK and LDH were detected in 94, 50 and 56% of the patients, respectively. All patients responded favorably to treatment with mebendazole or albendazole, but eight developed transient complications. Trichinellosis remains a major public health issue in Serbia. 相似文献

经济与环境协调发展评价是发展中国家可持续发展领域研究的热点问题。目前协调评价的模型取得了新的进展,但在应用方面多集中在现状评价,预测的案例较少;另外现有的研究多以经济子系统的发展水平与环境子系统的发展水平进行协调性评价,忽略了发展潜力这一重要变量。以连云港为分析案例,把发展潜力作为重要变量与发展水平变量相结合计算得到的综合发展指数纳入经济与环境协调评价模型中,并尝试根据系统历史与现状协调发展的演变规律运用GM(1,1)灰色模型预测系统未来的协调发展状态。现状评价与未来的预测结果表明:(1)1996—1999年连云港经济与环境系统从低级共生向环境资源的粗放利用转变;(2)2000—2006年,经济与环境的关系进入快速调整期,经济-环境复合生态系统综合发展指数不断增强,协调程度较上一阶段变化稳定;(3)到2007—2009年,环境对经济的限制作用将又逐渐显现;(4)2010—2015年,经济-环境复合生态系统整体协调度和综合发展指数都相应处于快速上升阶段。综合来看,1999年以后连云港经济-环境复合生态系统的协调度均处于0°以下,说明连云港在经济快速发展的初期往往是以环境破坏为代价的,因此在以后的发展中应主要处理好经济发展与环境保护的速度和公平问题。 相似文献

This paper discusses the economic, legal, moral, and political difficulties in developing drugs for the developing world. It argues that large, global pharmaceutical companies have social responsibilities to the developing world, and that they may exercise these responsibilities by investing in research and development related to diseases that affect developing nations, offering discounts on drug prices, and initiating drug giveaways. However, these social responsibilities are not absolute requirements and may be balanced against other obligations and commitments in light of economic, social, legal, political, and other conditions. How a company decides to exercise its social responsibilities to the developing world depends on (1) the prospects for a reasonable profit and (2) the prospects for a productive business environment. Developing nations can either help or hinder the pharmaceutical industry's efforts to exercise social responsibility through various policies and practices. To insure that companies can make a reasonable profit, developing nations should honor pharmaceutical product patents and adhere to international intellectual property treaties, such as the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. To insure the companies have a good business environment, developing nations should try to promote the rule of law, ethical business practices, stable currencies, reliable banking systems, free and open markets, democracy, and other conditions conducive to business. Overall, this paper advocates for reciprocity and cooperation between pharmaceutical companies and developing nations to address the problem of developing drugs for the developing world. In pursuing this cooperative approach, developing nations may use a variety of other techniques to encourage pharmaceutical companies to act responsibly, such as subsidizing pharmaceutical research, helping to design and implement research protocols, providing a guaranteed market, and bulk buying. 相似文献

Elucidation of factors responsible for enhanced thermal stability of proteins: a structural genomics based study 总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Understanding the molecular basis for the enhanced stability of proteins from thermophiles has been hindered by a lack of structural data for homologous pairs of proteins from thermophiles and mesophiles. To overcome this difficulty, complete genome sequences from 9 thermophilic and 21 mesophilic bacterial genomes were aligned with protein sequences with known structures from the protein data bank. Sequences with high homology to proteins with known structures were chosen for further analysis. High quality models of these chosen sequences were obtained using homology modeling. The current study is based on a data set of models of 900 mesophilic and 300 thermophilic protein single chains and also includes 178 templates of known structure. Structural comparisons of models of homologous proteins allowed several factors responsible for enhanced thermostability to be identified. Several statistically significant, specific amino acid substitutions that occur going from mesophiles to thermophiles are identified. Most of these are at solvent-exposed sites. Salt bridges occur significantly more often in thermophiles. The additional salt bridges in thermophiles are almost exclusively in solvent-exposed regions, and 35% are in the same element of secondary structure. Helices in thermophiles are stabilized by intrahelical salt bridges and by an increase in negative charge at the N-terminus. There is an approximate decrease of 1% in the overall loop content and a corresponding increase in helical content in thermophiles. Previously overlooked cation-pi interactions, estimated to be twice as strong as ion-pairs, are significantly enriched in thermophiles. At buried sites, statistically significant hydrophobic amino acid substitutions are typically consistent with decreased side chain conformational entropy. 相似文献

Possible factors responsible for the toxicity of Cochlodinium polykrikoides,a red tide phytoplankton

Cochlodinium polykrikoides, a harmful red tide dinoflagellate, is highly toxic to fish, but the toxic mechanism is still unknown. Recent study has suggested that C. polykrikoides generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide anion (O(2)(-)) and hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), and the ROS-mediated ichthyotoxicity has been proposed. In this study, we found that the levels of O(2)(-) and H(2)O(2) detected in C. polykrikoides were trace levels as compared with those of Chattonella marina which is well-known to produce ROS. Furthermore, no significant increase in O(2)(-) generation by C. polykrikoides was observed in the presence of lectins such as concanavalin A (Con A) and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) or fish mucus prepared from skin and gill of yellowtail, whereas C. marina generated increased level of O(2)(-) responding to these stimuli. Interestingly, the cell-free aqueous extract prepared from C. polykrikoides showed toxic effect on the HeLa cells, but the extract of C. marina had no significant effect. Furthermore, gradual accumulation of polysaccharides in the medium was observed during the growth of C. polykrikoides, and the medium gradually became viscous, but no such changes were observed in the medium of C. marina. These results suggest that multiple factors may be responsible for the toxic mechanism of C. polykrikoides. 相似文献

Purpose
Life cycle assessment (LCA) studies allow understanding all relevant processes and environmental impacts involved in the life cycle of products. However, in order to fully assess their sustainability, these studies should be complemented by economic (LCC) and societal analyses. In this context, the present work aims at assessing all costs (internal and external) and the environmental performance associated to the full life cycle of specific engineering products. These products are lighting columns for roadway illumination made with three different materials: a glass fibre reinforced polymer composite, steel and aluminium.Methods
The LCA/LCC integrated methodology used was based in a ??cradle-to-grave?? assessment which considers the raw materials production, manufacture, on-site installation, use and maintenance, dismantlement and end-of-life (EoL) of the lighting columns. The fossil fuels environmental impact category was selected as the key environmental impact indicator to perform the integrated environmental and cost analysis.Results
The potential total costs obtained for the full life cycle of the lighting columns demonstrated that the one made in steel performs globally worse than those made in composite or aluminium. Although the three systems present very similar internal costs, the steel column has higher external costs in the use phase that contribute for its higher total cost. This column has very high costs associated to safety features, since it constitutes a significant risk to the life of individuals. The raw material and column production stages are the main contributors for the total internal life cycle costs. The EoL treatment is a revenue source in all systems because it generates energy (in the case of the composite incineration) or materials (in the case of metal recycling). The composite and aluminium lighting columns present similar ??cradle-to-grave?? life cycle total cost. However, until the dismantlement phase, the aluminium column presents the highest environmental impact, whereas in the EoL treatment phase this scenario is reversed. The ??cradle-to-grave?? life cycle potential total cost and the environmental impact (fossil fuels) indicator of the steel lighting column are higher than those of the other columns.Conclusions
Even though the uncertainties in the LCC are larger if external costs are included, their consideration when modelling the economic performance of engineering products increases the probability of developing a more sustainable solution from a societal perspective. 相似文献13.
Comprehensive field data on polystomatid monogeneans record low prevalence and intensity of infection and suggest that worm burdens in this group are strongly regulated: thus, in the majority of Polystoma species infecting anuran amphibians mean abundance is typically less than one parasite/host. There is circumstantial evidence that the dominant control is attributable to host factors which over-ride variations in transmission success. This review provides a brief summary of information on Pseudodiplorchis americanus, a parasite of the desert toad, Scaphiopus couchii, and then focuses in detail on the spectrum of factors regulating infrapopulations of Protopolystoma xenopodis, a parasite of the aquatic Xenopus laevis. Infection levels of adult worms and their contribution to transmission are regulated by external environmental factors (especially temperature), by host factors (including behaviour and population density), and by a range of parasite factors including intra- and inter-specific competitive interactions and variations in intrinsic characters, especially survivorship and reproductive output. In addition to these factors whose primary effect is to modulate transmission rates, there is a major attrition in parasite numbers between invasion and maturity (3 months post-infection). Long-term laboratory experiments on the Xenopus laevis/Protopolystoma xenopodis interaction demonstrate a powerful acquired immune response. Primary infection is characterised by a high prevalence of established adult worms but the success of subsequent challenge infection is greatly reduced, leading to low prevalence and extended pre-patent period. In the small proportion of hosts supporting a second infection of adult parasites, surviving burdens are small (one to two worms/host) and show reduced egg production. These results provide an explanation for the low burdens encountered in field studies: a majority of adult X. laevis in natural populations are likely to exhibit strong, relatively long-term, post-infection immunity after the loss of a previous infection. 相似文献

The mechanism responsible for the remarkable photomutagenicity of fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics remains unknown. For this reason, it was considered worthwhile to study in detail the interactions between DNA and a dihalogenated FQ such as lomefloxacin (LFX; one of the most photomutagenic FQs) and its N-acetyl derivative ALFX. Studies of photosensitized DNA damage by (A)LFX, such as formation of DNA single-strand breaks (SSBs), together with pulse radiolysis, laser flash photolysis, and absorption and fluorescence measurements, have shown the important effects of the cationic character of the piperazinyl ring on the affinity of this type of drug for DNA. Hence, the formation of SSBs was detected for LFX, whereas ALFX and ciprofloxacin (a monofluorated FQ) needed a considerably larger dose of light to produce some damage. In this context, it was determined that the association constant (Ka) for the binding of LFX to DNA is ca. 2×103 M−1, whereas in the case of ALFX it is only ca. 0.5×103 M−1. This important difference is attributed to an association between the cationic peripheral ring of LFX and the phosphate moieties of DNA and justifies the DNA SSB results. The analysis of the transient species detected and the photomixtures has allowed us to establish the intermolecular processes involved in the photolysis of FQ in the presence of DNA and 2'-deoxyguanosine (dGuo). Interestingly, although a covalent binding of the dihalogenated FQ to dGuo occurs, the photodegradation of FQ…DNA complexes did not reveal any significant covalent attachment. Another remarkable outcome of this study was that (A)LFX radical anions, intermediates required for the onset of DNA damage, were detected by pulse radiolysis but not by laser flash photolysis. 相似文献

Obesity is a very important issue in developed societies and depends on many factors. The aim of this paper was to determine a possible relationship between overweight, obesity and socioeconomic factors among adolescents in Vojvodina. A cross-sectional anthropometric study was carried out from 2001 to 2004 in towns of Vojvodina, northern Serbia. The research included height and body weight measurements as well as body mass index (BMI) of 1236 schoolboys and 1414 schoolgirls aged 15–18 years. The socioeconomic factors (SES) included parents’ level of education and monthly income per family member. The overweight prevalence of about 10% (85 < P < 95) and the prevalence of obesity of 5% (P > 95) were recorded in both male and female adolescents. A significant correlation (p < 0.01) between all socioeconomic factors was observed in male subjects, although there were no significant differences in the prevalence of overweight and obesity when different categories of subjects set by SES were compared. In females lower rates of the prevalence of overweight and obesity were detected in the subjects whose parents had a university education, but the difference was not significant. Regarding the prevalence of obesity, a significant difference was recorded between females with high and low incomes, those with a high income showing significantly greater prevalence of obesity than females coming from low income families. The results of the research indicate that in Vojvodina the family income is the only factor that significantly correlates with female obesity. 相似文献

工业园区是工业活动的重要载体,也是水污染控制与治理的焦点对象。运用物质代谢分析方法解析水中主要污染主导元素在工业园区的代谢途径、结构与动力机制,有助于寻求提高水资源利用效率和减缓水环境污染压力的举措。以江苏宜兴经济开发区为案例,基于物质流分析方法构建了工业园区的磷代谢网络,详细解析了工业系统和污水处理模块的磷代谢途径和通量。研究表明,印染、食品加工和机械(磷化)行业是宜兴经济开发区的主要磷排放源;企业自备处理设施除磷效果不佳,磷去除率大约为60%,集中污水处理厂可以有效除磷,去除率约75%;生活污水磷去除率低;不经处理直接排入水体的降水给水体造成了较大的负荷,为34%。由此,建议企业完善简单的处理设施,污水处理厂提高企业纳管率,同时园区加强对生活污水、生活垃圾和企业固体排放物的管理。 相似文献

Purpose
Sustainability of a material-based product mainly depends on the materials used for the product itself or during its lifetime. A material selection decision should not only capture the functional performance required but should also consider the economical, social, and environmental impacts originated during the product life cycle. There is a need to assess social impacts of materials along the full life cycle, not only to be able to address the “social dimension” in sustainable material selection but also for potentially improving the circumstances of affected stakeholders. This paper presents the method and a case study of social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) specialized for comparative studies. Although the authors’ focus is on material selection, the proposed methodology can be used for comparative assessment of products in general.Methods
The method is based on UNEP/SETAC “guidelines for social life-cycle assessment of products” and includes four main phases: goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory analysis, life cycle impact assessment, and life cycle interpretation. However, some special features are presented to adjust the framework for materials comparison purpose. In life cycle inventory analysis phase, a hot spot assessment is carried out using material flow analysis and stakeholder and experts’ interviews. Based on the results of that, a pairwise comparison method is proposed for life cycle impact assessment applying analytic hierarchy process. A case study was conducted to perform a comparative assessment of the social and socio-economic impacts in life cycle of concrete and steel as building materials in Iran. For hot spot analysis, generic and national level data were gathered, and for impact assessment phase, site-specific data were used.Result and discussion
The unique feature of the proposed method compared with other works in S-LCA is its specialty to materials and products comparison. This leads to some differences in methodological issues of S-LCA that are explained in the paper in detail. The case study results assert that “steel/iron” in the north of Iran generally has the better social performance than “concrete/cement.” However, steel is associated with many negative social effects in some subcategories, e.g., freedom of association, fair salary, and occupational health in extraction phase. Against, social profile of concrete and cement industry is damaged mainly due to the negative impact of cement production on safe and healthy living condition. The case study presented in this article shows that the evaluation of social impacts is possible, even if the assessment is always affected by subjective value systems.Conclusions
Application of the UNEP/SETAC guidelines in comparative studies can be encouraged based on the results of this paper. It enables a hotspot assessment of the social and socio-economic impacts in life cycle of alternative materials. This research showed that the development of a specialized S-LCA approach for materials and products comparison is well underway although many challenges still persist. Particularly characterization method in life cycle impact assessment phase is challenging. The findings of this case study pointed out that social impacts are primarily connected to the conduct of companies and less with processes and materials in general. These findings confirm the results of Dreyer et al. (Int J Life Cycle Assess 11(2):88–97, 2006). The proposed approach aims not only to identify the best socially sustainable alternative but also to reveal product/process improvement potentials to facilitate companies to act socially compatible. It will be interesting to apply the UNEP/SETAC approach of S-LCA to other materials and products; materials with a more complex life cycle will be a special challenge. As with any new method, getting experience on data collection and evaluation, building a data base, integrating the method in software tools, and finding ways for effective communication of results are important steps until integrating S-LCA in routine decision support. 相似文献18.
The most influential conservation priority‐setting approaches emphasize biodiversity and threats when deciding where to focus investment. However, socio‐economic and political attributes of nations influence the effectiveness of conservation actions. A combination of biological and sociological variables in the context of a ‘return on investment’ framework for establishing conservation priorities was explored. While there was some overlap between megadiversity nations and return on investment priorities, only a few countries emerged as high priorities irrespective of which factors were included in the analysis. Conversely, some countries that ranked highly as priorities for conservation when focusing solely on biological metrics, did not rank highly when governance, population pressure, economic costs and conservation needs were considered (e.g. Colombia, Ecuador, Indonesia and Venezuela). No priority‐setting scheme is a priori superior to alternative approaches. However, the analyses suggest that attention to governance and return on investment may alter biocentric assessments of ideal conservation investments. 相似文献
