In prolonged genetic experiment two contrast inbred strains, selected for the differences in embryonic mortality have been produced (HEM and LEM). In HEM strain the balanced lethal system in 55.0 region (near B1) of chromosome 2 has been formed. Single trait selection of mice for either large body size or large litter size resulted in an increased ovulation rate because of possible enhanced ovarian sensitivity to gonadotrophins. There was no difference in pre-implantation embryonic survival in either of the selected lines when compared to control mice. Selection for body weight did not alter post-implantation embryo survival, but fewer fetuses were lost after implantation in the litter size line compared to the control line. Index selection for large body size and small litter size did not change ovulation rate but increased pre- and post-implantation embryonic mortality. Selection for small body size and large litter size increased ovulation rate and decreased early embryonic death.  相似文献

Knowledge on reproductive success is vital for successful management of large ungulates and is often measured by means of observing surviving offspring. In harvested ungulates, postmortem investigations of reproductive organs are used to estimate reproductive potential by obtaining ovulation rates and fetus numbers. However, there are differences in numbers of offspring observed, fetal/embryo counts, and ovulation rates. We hypothesize that the discrepancy between estimated reproductive potential and reproductive outcome in large ungulates is not only due to ova loss but also due to embryonic mortality. We investigated reproductive status in early pregnancy by sampling hunter-harvested moose (Alces alces) in southern Sweden from 2007 to 2011. In all, 213 reproductive organs were examined postmortem, and in confirmed pregnant moose (n?=?53), 25 % (19 of 76) embryos were nonviable and 6 % of ova was unfertilized. The discrepancy between the ovulation rate of all pregnant moose (1.49) and the number of expected offspring per pregnant female, when embryonic mortality and unfertilized oocytes were accounted for (1.08), was 27.5 %. An association between inflammation of the inner mucous membrane (endometritis) of the moose's uterus and embryonic mortality was observed. This is the first comprehensive report of embryonic mortality and endometritis in moose. The observed discrepancy between ovulation rates and early embryonic development/survival shows that ovulation rates are indicative but not accurate estimates of moose reproductive rate. The use of ovulation rates as a sole estimator of future offspring rates may lead to an overharvest of a managed moose population.  相似文献

Patterns of early embryonic development have traditionally been viewed as invariant within vertebrate taxa. It has been argued that the specific differences which are found arise during the later stages of development. These differences may be a result of allometry, heterochrony or changes in relative growth rates. To test whether early embryonic development is indeed invariant, or whether selection of adult characteristics can alter embryonic growth, we compared embryonic development in birds selected for different patterns of postnatal growth. Using quail lines selected for high and low body mass, we compared somite formation, and muscle and feather development. We obtained data that showed changes in the rate of myotome formation in the brachial somites which contribute to muscle formation in the limbs and thorax. We think these observations are connected with intraspecific changes in adult morphology, ie., breast muscle size. Our findings suggest that selection for late ontogenetic/adult stages affects early embryonic development.  相似文献

Early embryonic mortality and chromosome abnormalities were studied in three goose lines: Grey Landes (line 7), White Polish (line 4) and their synthetic line (line 9). Eggs laid at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the laying season were set. At candling at 5th day after egg set, all eggs (2847) were examined and those showing no normal embryonic development were opened 2847. Dead embryos were classified phenotypically and karyotyped. The mean ratio of embryonic mortality (EM) among fertile eggs was 9.4%, 5.2%, 7.3% in the lines 4, 7 and 9, respectively. The mean ratio of embryos with chromosomal abnormalities (CA) among the dead embryos was 8.0%, 14.8% and 13.1% in the lines 4, 7 and 9, respectively. Gander effect and layer within gander effect on embryo mortality were significant, indicating genetic factors. Father and mother of the layer effects were also significant, showing family effects. Animals producing dead embryos and embryos with chromosome abnormalities in high proportion were selected. In the selected groups the mean EM was 17.7-22.9%, and the mean CA was 11.7-34.7% among the three lines. The repetition of CA was not observed in the reproductive season of following year, while animals repeated the high EM (repeatability coefficient of 0.54). This shows that some part of EM may be resulted from other genetic factors. Ganders and layers progeny of these selected animals showed also high EM. It was concluded that culling pairs giving high EM value in their embryos could increase the average level of embryo viability and that the study of genetic determinism of that trait should be continued in geese.  相似文献

We analyzed the survival rate of the immature stages of Trichogramma species and lines that differed in their mode of reproduction. Specifically, we compared the mortality of arrhenotokous (W(-)), irrevertable thelytokous (W(-)), and Wolbachia-associated thelytokous (W(+)) forms. The embryonic mortality of the W(+) strains was significantly higher than that of the W(-) lines. The embryonic mortality was negligible for the arrhenotokous Trichogramma evanescens and the thelytokous Trichogramma cacoeciae, which is not infected with Wolbachia. Only 30% of the eggs of the Wolbachia-infected strains developed to adults, while the emergence rate of the Wolbachia-free strains was more than 78%, irrespective of the origin of the strains. More than 78% of the overall mortality in W(+) strains happened during the early stages of development. About 35% of embryos of W(+) strains remain in the mitotic stage even 48 h after oviposition. Most embryos of W(-) strains had already developed to cellular blastoderm after 6 h, regardless of strains. The mortality of immature stages in W(+) strains was mainly caused by the failure of the mitotic divisions.  相似文献

I evaluated the effect of incubation temperature on phenotypes of the veiled chameleon, Chamaeleo calyptratus. I chose this species for study because its large clutch size (30-40 eggs or more) allows replication within clutches both within and among experimental treatments. The major research objectives were (1) to assess the effect of constant low, moderate, and high temperatures on embryonic development, (2) to determine whether the best incubation temperature for embryonic development also produced the "best" hatchlings, and (3) to determine how a change in incubation temperature during mid-development would affect phenotype. To meet these objectives, I established five experimental temperature regimes and determined egg survival and incubation length and measured body size and shape, selected body temperatures, and locomotory performance of lizards at regular intervals from hatching to 90 d, or just before sexual maturity. Incubation temperature affected the length of incubation, egg survival, and body mass, but did not affect sprint speed or selected body temperature although selected body temperature affected growth in mass independently of treatment and clutch. Incubation at moderate temperatures provided the best conditions for both embryonic and post-hatching development. The highest incubation temperatures were disruptive to development; eggs had high mortality, developmental rate was low, and hatchlings grew slowly. We used Xenopus embryo cells with a cell cycle of 20-30 min to detect inhibitory effects on cell proliferation. Inhibition of proliferation was observed when isolated embryonic cells were incubated for 16 h in a simple salt solution containing the well-known anticancer drugs 5-fluorouracil and adriamycin. In addition, three diterpene compounds isolated from the anticancer herbal medicine kansui: kansuinin B, 20-OD-ingenol Z, and 20-OD-ingenol E specifically inhibited the proliferation of isolated embryonic cells. The inhibitory compounds selected using the embryonic cells also inhibited proliferation of certain mammalian cell types.  相似文献

The effects of pH and aluminium on embryonic and early larval stages of Swedish brown frogs Rana arvalis, R. temporaria and R. dalmatina were tested in laboratory bioassays. In all three species egg mortality and time needed for embryonic development to hatching increased when pH declined, but no significant effects were found on embryonic development when aluminium level was elevated. In R. arvalis and R. temporaria larval mortality was affected by both pH and aluminium. In both species the frequency of occurrence of larval deformities increased in acid water, and there was a synergistic effect of pH and aluminium. In R. arvalis swimming behaviour was disturbed by high levels of aluminium at pH 5. In all three species the frequency of stressed larvae increased when pH was depressed and aluminium concentration elevated, and there was a synergistic effect when both were combined. The three species differed significantly in egg mortality, time needed for embryonic development, larval mortality, larval deformities and larval stress al low pH and high aluminium levels. R. arvalis showed the highest acid tolerance and R. dalmatina was the most sensitive to low pH.  相似文献

The aim was to determine the factors that contribute to embryonic mortality in buffaloes mated by AI during a period of increasing day length which corresponds to a natural decline in reproductive activity. Italian Mediterranean buffalo cows (n=243) showing regular estrous cycles were synchronized using the Ovsynch-TAI program and mated by AI at 16 and 40 h after the second injection of GnRH. Blood samples were collected on Days 10 and 20 after the first AI and assayed for progesterone (P4). Pregnancy diagnosis was undertaken on Days 26 and 40 after the first AI using rectal ultrasonography. Buffaloes with a conceptus on Day 26 but not on Day 40 were judged to have undergone embryonic mortality and for these animals uterine fluid was recovered by flushing and analysed for common infectious agents. Estrus synchronization was achieved in 86% of buffaloes and the pregnancy rate on Day 40 was 34%. Embryonic mortality between Days 26 and 40 occurred in 45% of buffaloes and was associated with the presence of significant infectious agents in only 10 buffaloes (8%). Concentrations of P4 on Day 10 after AI were higher (P<0.05) in buffaloes that established a pregnancy than in buffaloes that showed embryonic mortality that was not associated with infectious agents. Similarly, on Day 20 after AI P4 concentrations were higher (P<0.01) in pregnant buffaloes compared with non-pregnant buffaloes and buffaloes that had embryonic mortality. It is concluded that a reduced capacity for P4 secretion can explain around 50% of embryonic mortalities in buffaloes synchronised and mated by AI during a period of low reproductive activity and that other as yet unidentified factors also have a significant effect on embryonic survival.  相似文献

Selective mortality within a population, based on the phenotype of individuals, is the foundation of the theory of natural selection. We examined temperature-induced shifts in the relationships among early life history traits and survivorship over the embryonic and larval stages of a tropical damselfish, Pomacentrus amboinensis. Our experiments show that temperature determines the intensity of selective mortality, and that this changes with ontogeny. The size of energy stores determined survival through to hatching, after which egg size became a good indicator of fitness as predicted by theoretical models. Yet, the benefits associated with egg size were not uniform among test temperatures. Initial egg size positively influenced larval survival at control temperature (29 °C). However, this embryonic trait had no effect on post-hatching longevity of individuals reared at the higher (31 °C) and lower (25 °C) end of the temperature range. Overall, our findings indicate that the outcome of selective mortality is strongly dependent on the interaction between environment conditions and intrinsic developmental schedules.  相似文献

Background

A large number of studies in postcopulatory sexual selection use paternity success as a proxy for fertilization success. However, selective mortality during embryonic development can lead to skews in paternity in situations of polyandry and sperm competition. Thus, when assessment of paternity fails to incorporate mortality skews during early ontogeny, this may interfere with correct interpretation of results and subsequent evolutionary inference. In a previous series of in vitro sperm competition experiments with amphibians (Litoria peronii), we showed skewed paternity patterns towards males more genetically similar to the female.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Here we use in vitro fertilizations and sperm competition trials to test if this pattern of paternity of fully developed tadpoles reflects patterns of paternity at fertilization and if paternity skews changes during embryonic development. We show that there is no selective mortality through ontogeny and that patterns of paternity of hatched tadpoles reflects success of competing males in sperm competition at fertilization.

Conclusions/Significance

While this study shows that previous inferences of fertilization success from paternity data are valid for this species, rigorous testing of these assumptions is required to ensure that differential embryonic mortality does not confound estimations of true fertilization success.  相似文献

The problem of the presence of imprinted regions on the X-chromosome and the possible influence of the imprinted expression of X-linked genes on the embryonic development in man remains largely unsolved. A comparison of the uniparental inheritance of chromosomes or of their regions having different phenotypic manifestations provides an instrument with which to study the phenomenon of genomic imprinting at the chromosomal level. Assuming that the imprinted inactivation of X-chromosomes is functionally significant for embryonic development, we have studied several polymorphic micro- and minisatellite loci of X-chromosomes in 52 fetuses with karyotype 46.XX, which were spontaneously aborted during the first trimester of pregnancy. The purpose was to determine the contribution of uniparental disomy for the X-chromosome in any disturbances of the embryonic development. We found that inheritance of X-chromosomes was biparental in the studied embryos, suggesting the absence of any significant contribution of the parental origin of the X-chromosome to embryonic mortality occurring between 4 and 12 weeks of development.  相似文献

Superfoetation is when ovulation and fertilisation occur during pregnancy. Coupled with embryonic diapause, superfoetation presents an intriguing female reproductive advantage in terms of cryptic choice of males. Unfortunately, few studies have identified species possessing both superfoetation and embryonic diapause. We aim to reinterpret existing data on reproductive physiology in the stoat Mustela erminea and suggest it may be a previously overlooked species that possesses this combination. By increasing our knowledge of such reproductive systems, we can further our understanding of a cryptic sexually selected function and better explain the evolutionary gain and loss of embryonic diapause in mammals.  相似文献

First-instar larvae of Osmylus fulvicephalus consumed developing eggs, and chironomids preyed on newly hatched larvae.
4. A mean of seventy-two females emerged per metre of stream. Mortality during the 1993/94 life cycle was measured as a percentage of the potential number of eggs laid. Female mortality between emergence and oviposition was ≈ 80%. Eight per cent of individuals were lost during embryonic development. Larval mortality to emergence in 1994 was 11.3%. This indicates that the terrestrial life stage is probably decisive in the regulation of A. fimbriata populations.
5. Duration of embryogenesis at constant temperatures (4–20 °C) in the laboratory was described best by a negative exponential function. This species is cold stenothermal and there was no hatching success at 20 °C.

Estrous cycle variations and the association of rectal temperature with reproductive measurements and liveweight were examined in 25-month-old 1 2 and 3 4 Brahman heifers (n = 88). The mean cycle length was longer in the 1 2 Brahmari (24.3 days) than in the 3 4 Brahman heifers (21.3 days) due to the length of estrus-metestrus, but the overall difference was not statistically significant. Cycle length was not influenced by cycle number or liveweight. Cycles were classified into 6 types: normal, short, long, anovulatory and those involving embryonic nortality and prolonged diestrus. Only 33.6% of 1 2 Brahman cycles and 36.1% of 3 4 Brahman cycles were of normal duration (18 to 24 days), and 13.3% of 1 2 Brahman and 11.6% of 3 4 Brahman cycles were classified as embryonic mortality cycles. On an individual animal basis, 25.0% and 31.8% of 3 4 Brahman heifers, respectively, had cycles in which embryonic mortality was suspected. Heifers that became pregnant were significantly (P < 0.01) heavier throughout mating and had significantly (P < 0.05) lower mean rectal temperatures. Heifers in which embryonic mortality had occurred were lighter and had significantly (P < 0.01) higher rectal temperatures than heifers in which embryonic mortality had not occurred. Correlations between rectal temperature and ambient temperature were nonsignificant after eliminating the effect of genotype, but rectal temperature was significantly (P < 0.01) negatively correlated with liveweight.  相似文献

The potential litter size of gilts that is based on the ovulation rate is much higher than the actual litter size, which depends on the fertilization rate and subsequent prenatal mortality. Prenatal mortality is divided into embryonic mortality (before Day 30) and fetal mortality (after Day 30). Prenatal loss includes both fertilization failure and prenatal mortality. Crossbred gilts (n = 149) were bred at the first observed estrus after being exposed to the boar at 200 days of age. Time of the first insemination after estrus detection was determined by measurement of vaginal conductivity using a Walsmeta meter. A second insemination was administered either 8 or 16 hours later. Artificial insemination with fresh semen (0 to 3 days old) was used throughout the experiment. Gilts were slaughtered on Day 3 (n = 26), Day 10 (n = 42), Day 30 of gestation (n = 45) or they were allowed to farrow (n = 36). Gilts slaughtered on Day 3 were used to estimate the fertilization rate. Gilts slaughtered on Day 10 and Day 30 were used to calculate embryonic mortality, while fetal mortality was calculated from the gilts that farrowed. The mean (+/-SEM) number of corpora lutea (CL) was 13.15+/-0.46, 13.36+/-0.37 and 12.97+/-0.39 for gilts slaughtered at Days 3, 10 and 30, respectively (P>0.05), and the mean (+/-SEM) number of normal embryos recovered was 11.12+/-0.69, 9.46+/-0.55 and 9.33+/-0.58, respectively. Litter size at parturition was 9.10+/-0.54. There was a significant difference between the number of normal embryos on Day 3 and Day 30 (P=0.05) and also between the number of normal embryos at Day 3 and the number of piglets at term. Ninety percent of the ova were recovered at Day 3. The fertilization rate was calculated either 1) assuming that unrecovered ova had a similar fertilization rate as the recovered ova (FRER=94.5+/-2.0%) or 2) assuming that unrecovered ova were unfertilized (FROR=84.5+/-2.5%). It was concluded that FRER was a more accurate estimation of the fertilization rate. Based on this fertilization rate, embryonic mortality between Day 3 and Day 10 was 20.8+/-8.3%, with an additional 12.5+/-7.1% loss between Day 10 and Day 30, when all gilts were included (P = 0.308). Thus the total prenatal loss, including fertilization failure, up to Day 10 was 26.3% and to Day 30 it was 38.8%. Fetal mortality was 2.2%, giving a total prenatal mortality (excluding fertilization failure) of 35.5% and a prenatal loss of 41%. Most of the prenatal loss was due to embryonic mortality. In those gilts that remained pregnant most of the embryonic loss occurred before Day 10 (19.0+/-6.3%; P=0.003). There was no further loss between Day 10 and 30 of pregnancy. There was a significant difference between the loss from Day 3 to Day 10 compared with the loss from Day 10 to Day 30 (P=0.05); therefore, most of the embryonic loss in pregnant gilts occurred before Day 10. Since fetal mortality was 3.2+/-6.3%, most of the prenatal loss was due to embryonic mortality.  相似文献

In haplodiploid species, Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) can be expressed in one of two ways: as a "conversion" of diploid fertilized eggs into haploid males or as embryonic mortality. Here we describe CI-type variation within the parasitic wasp genus Nasonia and genetically analyze the basis of this variation. We reach four main conclusions: (i) CI is expressed primarily as conversion in N. vitripennis, but as embryonic mortality in the sibling species N. giraulti and N. longicornis; (ii) the difference in CI type between N. giraulti (mortality) and N. vitripennis (conversion) is determined by host nuclear genotype rather than by Wolbachia differences; (iii) N. vitripennis "conversion genes" are recessive in hybrid females; and (iv) a difference in CI level between the sibling species N. giraulti and N. longicornis is due to the different Wolbachia infections in the species rather than to the host genotype. These results show that host nuclear genes can influence the type of CI present in a species. On the basis of these findings, we propose a model for how different CI types evolve in haplodiploids due to selection on nuclear genes modifying CI.  相似文献
