Abstract: The concentration dependency of the impact of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations on Arabidopsis thaliana L. was studied. Plants were exposed to nearly ambient (390), 560, 810, 1240 and 1680 μl I-1 CO2 during the vegetative growth phase for 8 days. Shoot biomass production and dry matter content were increased upon exposure to elevated CO2. Maximal increase in shoot fresh and dry weight was obtained at 560 μl I-1 CU2, which was due to a transient stimulation of the relative growth rate for up to 3 days. The shoot starch content increased with increasing CO2 concentrations up to two-fold at 1680 μl I-1 CO2, whereas the contents of soluble sugars and phenolic compounds were hardly affected by elevated CO2. The chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were not substantially affected at elevated CO2 and the chlorophyll a/b ratio remained unaltered. There was no acclimation of photosynthesis at elevated CO2; the photosynthetic capacity of leaves, which had completely developed at elevated CO2 was similar to that of leaves developed in ambient air. The possible consequences of an elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration to Arabidopsis thaliana in its natural habitat is discussed.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide and ethylene interactions in tulip bulbs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The effect of CO2 on ethylene-induced gummosis (secretion of polysaccharides), weight loss and respiration in tulip bulbs ( Tulipa gesneriana L.) was investigated. A pretreatment with 1-MCP prevented these ethylene-induced effects, indicating that ethylene action must have been directed via the ethylene receptor. Treatment with 0.3 Pa ethylene for 2 days caused gummosis on 50% of the total number of bulbs of cultivar Apeldoorn, known to be sensitive for gummosis. Addition of CO2 (10 kPa) reduced the ethylene-induced gummosis to 18%. In a second experiment the influence of ethylene and CO2 on respiration and FW loss of bulbs of the cultivar Leen van der Mark was studied. A range of ethylene partial pressures (0.003–0.3 Pa) was applied continuously for 29 days. Ethylene caused a transient peak in O2 consumption rate during the first days after the start of application. The relation between O2 consumption rate and ethylene partial pressure could be described by Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Respiratory peaks were reduced by CO2. This inhibition by CO2 could not totally be due to competition with ethylene at the receptor binding-site, as was indicated by the use of an O2 consumption model. Pre-treatment of bulbs with 1-MCP and subsequent exposure to CO2 showed that CO2 could influence respiration irrespective of any interaction with ethylene. Ethylene and CO2 both stimulated weight loss. The effect of combined treatments of ethylene and CO2 on weight loss was at least as strong as the sum of the separate effects, which implies that competition between ethylene and CO2 at the receptor binding-site was unlikely.  相似文献

Rising atmospheric CO2 may increase potential net leaf photosynthesis under short-term exposure, but this response decreases under long-term exposure because plants acclimate to elevated CO2 concentrations through a process known as downregulation. One of the main factors that may influence this phenomenon is the balance between sources and sinks in the plant. The usual method of managing a forage legume like alfalfa requires the cutting of shoots and subsequent regrowth, which alters the source/sink ratio and thus photosynthetic behaviour. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of CO2 (ambient, around 350 vs. 700 µmol mol−1), temperature (ambient vs. ambient + 4° C) and water availability (well-irrigated vs. partially irrigated) on photosynthetic behaviour in nodulated alfalfa before defoliation and after 1 month of regrowth. At the end of vegetative normal growth, plants grown under conditions of elevated CO2 showed photosynthetic acclimation with lower photosynthetic rates, Vcmax and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rubisco) activity. This decay was probably a consequence of a specific rubisco protein reduction and/or inactivation. In contrast, high CO2 during regrowth did not change net photosynthetic rates or yield differences in Vcmax or rubisco total activity. This absence of photosynthetic acclimation was directly associated with the new source-sink status of the plants during regrowth. After cutting, the higher root/shoot ratio in plants and remaining respiration can function as a strong sink for photosynthates, avoiding leaf sugar accumulation, the negative feed-back control of photosynthesis, and as a consequence, photosynthetic downregulation.  相似文献

Bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Golden Saxa) plants were grown under low artificial light or under natural daylight. The rate of net photosynthesis (PN) was measured at: CO2 partial pressure, p(CO2), of 0.03, 0.09 or 0.15 kPa; O2 partial pressure, p(O2), of 2, 21 or 31 kPa and at light intensities of 350 or 1000 μmol m−2 s−1 (photosynthetically active radiation). In plants which had been grown under natural light, stimulation of PN at 21 kPa p(O2) was found only at elevated p(CO2) and high light. It is proposed that this phenomenon is dependent on a high capacity of the photosynthetic apparatus to regenerate ribulose 1.5-bisphosphate.  相似文献

We studied the effects on the phenology, growth and reproduction of 19 Mediterranean species, of elevating the atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) to twice-ambient. Intact monoliths were taken from an old-field and put, during a six month growing season, into growth chambers in which external climatic conditions were mimicked and [CO2] was regulated. Fruit set time was significantly changed in six species under elevated [CO2] and leaf and branch senescence accelerated in most species. Grasses had fewer leaves and legumes were more branched at peak production under elevated [CO2] than under ambient. Plant seed number was not significantly changed under elevated [CO2], whereas the reproductive effort of grasses was significantly depressed. Reproductive and vegetative characteristics showed related responses to [CO2], as species with enhanced biomass had a hastened fruit set time, a higher number of fruits per plant and a higher reproductive biomass under elevated [CO2] than under ambient conditions, while species with depressed biomass had a delayed fruit set time, a lower number of fruits per plant and a lower reproductive biomass. Our results also show a high interspecific variability in [CO2] response, but some trends emerged at the family level: the production of vegetative and reproductive modules were depressed in grasses and slightly stimulated in legumes.  相似文献

Elevated levels of ethylene occur in controlled environment agriculture and in spaceflight environments, leading to adverse plant growth and sterility. The objectives of this research were to characterize the influence of ethylene on carbon dioxide (CO2) assimilation (CA), dark period respiration (DPR) and growth of lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L. cv. Buttercrunch) under ambient and low total pressure conditions. Lettuce plants were grown under variable total gas pressures of 25 kPa (hypobaric) and 101 kPa (ambient) pressure. Endogenously produced ethylene accumulated and reduced CA, DPR and plant growth of ambient and hypobaric plants. There was a negative linear correlation between increasing ethylene concentrations [from 0 to around 1000 nmol mol−1 (ppb)] on CA, DPR and growth of ambient and hypobaric plants. Declines in CA and DPR occurred with both exogenous and endogenous ethylene treatments. CA was more sensitive to increasing ethylene concentration than DPR. There was a direct, negative effect of increasing ethylene concentration reducing gas exchange as well as an indirect ethylene effect on leaf epinasty, which reduced light capture and CA. While the CA was comparable, there was a lower DPR in hypobaric than ambient pressure plants – independent of ethylene and under non-limiting CO2 levels (100 Pa pCO2, nearly three-fold that in normal air). This research shows that lettuce can be grown under hypobaria (≅25% of normal earth ambient total pressure); however, hypobaria caused no significant reduction of endogenous ethylene production.  相似文献

Stomatal conductance ( g s) and photosynthetic rate ( A ) were measured in young beech ( Fagus sylvatica ), chestnut ( Castanea sativa ) and oak ( Quercus robur ) growing in ambient or CO2-enriched air. In oak, g s was consistently reduced in elevated CO2. However, in beech and chestnut, the stomata of trees growing in elevated CO2 failed to close normally in response to increased leaf-to-air vapour pressure deficit (LAVPD). Consequently, while g s was reduced in elevated CO2 on days with low LAVPD, on warm sunny days (with correspondingly high LAVPD) g s was unchanged or even slightly higher in elevated CO2. Furthermore, during drought, g s of beech and chestnut was unresponsive to [CO2], over a wide range of ambient LAVPD, whereas in oak g s was reduced by an average of 50% in elevated CO2. Stimulation of A by elevated CO2 in beech and chestnut was restricted to days with high irradiance, and was greatest in beech during drought. Hence, most of the additional carbon gain in elevated CO2 was made at the expense of water economy, at precisely those times (drought, high evaporative demand) when water conservation was most important. Such effects could have serious consequences for drought tolerance, growth and, ultimately, survival as atmospheric [CO2] increases.  相似文献

Rice ( Oryza sativa L. cv. IR72) was grown at three different CO2 concentrations (ambient, ambient + 200 μmol mol−1, ambient + 300 μmol mol−1) at two different growth temperatures (ambient, ambient + 4°C) from sowing to maturity to determine longterm photosynthetic acclimation to elevated CO2 with and without increasing temperature. Single leaves of rice showed a cooperative enhancement of photosynthetic rate with elevated CO2 and temperature during tillering, relative to the elevated CO2 condition alone. However, after flowering, the degree of photosynthetic stimulation by elevated CO2 was reduced for the ambient + 4°C treatment. This increasing insensitivity to CO2 appeared to be accompanied by a reduction in ribulose-1.5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) activity and/or concentration as evidenced by the reduction in the assimilation (A) to internal CO2 (C1) response curve. The reproductive response (e.g. percent filled grains, panicle weight) was reduced at the higher growth temperature and presumably reflects a greater increase in floral sterility. Results indicate that while CO2 and temperature could act synergistically at the biochemical level, the direct effect of temperature on floral development with a subsequent reduction in carbon utilization may change sink strength so as to limit photosynthetic stimulation by elevated CO2 concentration.  相似文献

Seedlings of three species native to central North America, a C3 tree, Populus tremuloides Michx., a C3 grass, Agropyron smithii Rybd., and a C4 grass, Bouteloua curtipendula Michx., were grown in all eight combinations of two levels each of CO2, O3 and nitrogen (N) for 58 days in a controlled environment. Treatment levels consisted of 360 or 674 μmol mol-1 CO2, 3 or 92 nmol mol-1 O3, and 0.5 or 6.0 m M N. In situ photosynthesis and relative growth rate (RGR) and its determinants were obtained at each of three sequential harvests, and leaf dark respiration was measured at the second and third harvests. In all three species, plants grown in high N had significantly greater whole-plant mass, RGR and photosynthesis than plants grown in low N. Within a N treatment, elevated CO2 did not significantly enhance any of these parameters nor did it affect leaf respiration. However, plants of all three species grown in elevated CO2 had lower stomatal conductance compared to ambient CO2-exposed plants. Seedlings of P. tremuloides (in both N treatments) and B. curtipendula (in high N) had significant ozone-induced reductions in whole-plant mass and RGR in ambient but not under elevated CO2. This negative O3 impact on RGR in ambient CO2 was related to increased leaf dark respiration, decreased photosynthesis and/or decreased leaf area ratio, none of which were noted in high O3 treatments in the elevated CO2 environment. In contrast, A. smithii was marginally negatively affected by high O3.  相似文献

Gas exchange studies in two Portuguese grapevine cultivars   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Gas exchange characteristics of leaves of Vitis vinifera L. cvs Tinta Amarela and Periquita, two grapevine cultivars grown in distinct climatic regions of Portugal, were studied under natural and controlled conditions. Daily time courses of gas exchange were measured on both a hot, sunny day and a cooler, partly cloudy day. Responses of net photosynthesis to irradiance and internal partial pressure of CO2, were also obtained. A strong correlation between net photosynthesis (PN) and leaf conductance (gs) was found during the diurnal time courses of gas exchange, as well as a relatively constant internal partial pressure of CO2 (Pi), even under non-steady-state conditions. On the cloudless day, both PN and gs were lower in the afternoon than in the morning, despite similar conditions of leaf temperature, air to leaf water vapor deficit and irradiance. The response curves of net photosynthesis to internal CO2 showed linearity up to pi values of 50 Pa, possibly indicating a substantial excess of photosynthetic capacity. When measured at low partial pressures of O2 (1 kPa), PN became inhibited at high CO2 levels. Inhibition of PN at high CO2 was absent under normal levels of O2 (21 kPa). Significant differences in gas exchange characteristics were found between the two cultivars, with T. Amarela having higher rates under similar measurement conditions. In particular, the superior performance of T. Amarela at high temperatures may represent adaptation to the warmer conditions at its place of origin.  相似文献

1. A new open-top chamber for measuring CO2 efflux from the soil is reported here. The new design enables measurement of the equilibrium CO2 efflux, when there is no detectable pressure difference between the chamber and outside nor leakage of CO2 into or out of the chamber.
2. In previous dynamic-chamber techniques, the measured CO2 efflux is dependent on the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the chamber, and a negative pressure difference of –1Pa may cause an order of magnitude increase in measured CO2 efflux. Although the measured CO2 efflux is less sensitive to a positive pressure difference than to a negative one, a positive pressure difference of even a few tenths of a Pa will lead to a considerable underestimation in soil CO2 evolution.
3. The influence of pressure difference on measured CO2 efflux is negligible in the new design and the estimated CO2 efflux is close to the undisturbed soil respiration rate. Flow rates up to 8lmin–1, or air movement over the soil surface up to 55cmmin–1, will not affect CO2 evolution from the soil. The influence of pressure difference is related to the type of soil being measured and this has also been reported here for the new design.  相似文献

Plant responses to elevated CO2 can be modified by many environmental factors, but very little attention has been paid to the interaction between CO2 and changes in vapour pressure deficit (VPD). Thirty-day-old alfalfa plants ( Medicago sativa L. cv. Aragón), which were inoculated with Sinorhizobium meliloti 102F78 strain, were grown for 1 month in controlled environment chambers at 25/15°C, 14 h photoperiod, and 600 µmol m−2 s−1 photosynthetic photon flux (PPF), using a factorial combination of CO2 concentration (400 µmol mol−1 or 700 µmol mol−1) and vapour pressure deficit (0.48 kPa or 1.74 kPa, which corresponded to relative humidities of 85% and 45% at 25°C, respectively). Elevated CO2 strongly stimulated plant growth under high VPD conditions, but this beneficial effect was not observed under low VPD. Under low VPD, elevated CO2 also did not enhance plant photosynthesis, and plant water stress was greatest for plants grown at elevated CO2 and low VPD. Moreover, plants grown under elevated CO2 and low VPD had a lower leaf soluble protein and photosynthetic activity (photosynthetic rate and carboxylation efficiency) than plants grown under elevated CO2 and high VPD. Elevated CO2 significantly increased leaf adaxial and abaxial temperatures. Because the effects of elevated CO2 were dependent on vapour pressure deficit, VPD needs to be controlled in experiments studying the effect of elevated CO2 as well as considered in the extrapolations of results to a warmer, high-CO2 world.  相似文献

To determine how increased atmospheric CO2 will affect the physiology of coppiced plants, sprouts originating from two hybrid poplar clones ( Populus trichocarpa × P. deltoides - Beaupre and P. deltoides × P. nigra - Robusta) were grown in open-top chambers containing ambient or elevated (ambient + 360 μmol mol−1) CO2 concentration. The effects of elevated CO2 concentration on leaf photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, dark respiration, carbohydrate concentration and nitrogen concentration were measured. Furthermore, dark respiration of leaves was partitioned into growth and maintenance components by regressing specific respiration rate vs specific growth rate. Sprouts of both clones exposed to CO2 enrichment showed no indication of photosynthetic down-regulation. During reciprocal gas exchange measurements, CO2 enrichment significantly increased photosynthesis of all sprouts by approximately 60% ( P < 0.01) on both an early and late season sampling date, decreased stomatal conductance of all sprouts by 10% ( P < 0.04) on the early sampling date and nonsignificantly decreased dark respiration by an average of 11%. Growth under elevated CO2 had no consistent effect on foliar sugar concentration but significantly increased foliar starch by 80%. Respiration rate was highly correlated with both specific growth rate and percent nitrogen. Long-term CO2 enrichment did not significantly affect the maintenance respiration coefficient or the growth respiration coefficient. Carbon dioxide enrichment affected the physiology of the sprouts the same way it affected these plants before they were coppiced.  相似文献

An open flow-through gas system was used to determine the effect of C2H2 and elevated O2 on acetylene reduction activity (ARA) and respiration of the intact, potted root system of Alnus incana (L.) Moench in symbiosis with Frankia Avcll or with a local source of Frankia . Both symbiotic systems responded to C2H2 by an immediate plateau range in ARA. The Plateau in ARA was in some cases followed by a decline of less extent than reported for many legumes. A concurrent decline in net respiration of the root system was on average 8% of the CO2 efflux prior to C2H2 introduction.
Respiration of the root systems in both symbioses responded to elevated oxygen levels in the 10 kPa C2H2 atmosphere by an increase of up to 17% of the net respiration prior to C2H2 introduction in 21 kPa O2. In contrast, the elevated oxygen levels resulted in an immediate drop in ARA followed by a minor increase to a stable level lower than that at the preceding, lower oxygen tension. The symbiosis with the local Frankia had lost all ARA when the partial pressure of O2 exceeded 50 kPa, whereas the symbiosis with Avcll still had some activity at 80 kPa O2. This difference in tolerance of elevated O2 clearly shows that the oxygen exclusion mechanisms may be controlled by the microsymbiont in Alnus-Frankia symbioses. The symbiotic systems recovered ARA to a similar extent when returned from elevated O2 levels to 21 kPa O2.  相似文献

Respiratory responses of higher plants to atmospheric CO2 enrichment   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Although the respiratory response of native and agricultural plants to atmospheric CO2 enrichment has been reported over the past 75 years, only recently have these effects emerged as prominent measures of plant and ecosystem response to the earth's changing climate. In this review we discuss this rapidly expanding field of study and propose that both increasing and decreasing rates of leaf and whole-plant respiration are likely to occur in response to rising CO2 concentrations. While the stimulatory effects of CO2 on respiration are consistent with our knowledge of leaf carbohydrate status and plant metabolism, we wish to emphasize the rather surprising short-term inhibition of leaf respiration by elevated CO2 and the reported effects of long-term CO2 exposure on growth and maintenance respiration. As is being found in many studies, it is easier to document the respiratory response of higher plants to elevated CO2 than it is to assign a mechanistic basis for the observed effects. Despite this gap in our understanding of how respiration is affected by CO2 enrichment, data are sufficient to suggest that changes in leaf and whole-plant respiration may be important considerations in the carbon dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems as global CO2 continues to rise. Suggestions for future research that would enable these and other effects of CO2 on respiration to be unravelled are presented.  相似文献

A recognized invasive weed, Canada thistle ( Cirsium arvense L. Scop.) was grown at ambient and pre-ambient concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide [CO2] (373 and 287 μmol mol−1, respectively) at three levels of supplemental nitrogen (N) (3, 6 and 14.5 m M ) from seeding until flowering [77 days after sowing (DAS)]. The primary objective of the study was to determine if N supply limited the potential photosynthetic and growth response of this species to the increase in atmospheric [CO2] which occurred during the 20th century (i.e. approximately 290 to 370 μmol mol−1 CO2). Leaf photosynthesis increased both as a function of growth [CO2] and N supply during the first 46 DAS. Although by 46 DAS photosynthetic acclimation was observed relative to a common measurement CO2 concentration, there was no interaction with N supply. Both [CO2] and N increased biomass, relative growth rates and leaf area whereas root : shoot ratio was increased by CO2 and decreased by increasing N; however, N supply did not effect the relative response to [CO2] for any measured vegetative parameter up to 77 DAS. Due to the relative stimulation of shoot biomass, total above-ground N increased at elevated [CO2] for all levels of supplemental N, but nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) did not differ as a function of [CO2]. Overall, these data suggest that any potential response to increased atmospheric [CO2] in recent decades for this noxious weedy species was probably not limited by nitrogen supply.  相似文献

The objective of this investigation was to examine the effect of an elevated atmospheric CO2 partial pressure ( p CO2) on the N-sink strength and performance of symbiotic N2 fixation in Trifolium repens L. cv. Milkanova. After initial growth under ambient p CO2 in a nitrogen-free nutrient solution, T. repens in the exponential growth stage was exposed to ambient and elevated p CO2 (35 and 60 Pa) and two levels of mineral N (N-free and 7·5 mol m–3 N) for 36 d in single pots filled with silica sand in growth chambers. Elevated p CO2 evoked a significant increase in biomass production from day 12 after the start of CO2 enrichment. For plants supplied with 7·5 mol m–3 N, the relative contribution of symbiotically fixed N (%Nsym) as opposed to N assimilated from mineral sources (15N-isotope-dilution method), dropped to 40%. However, in the presence of this high level of mineral N, %Nsym was unaffected by atmospheric p CO2 over the entire experimental period. In plants fully dependent on N2 fixation, the increase in N yield reflects a stimulation of symbiotic N2 fixation that was the result of the formation of more nodules rather than of higher specific N2 fixation. These results are discussed with regard to physiological processes governing symbiotic N2 fixation and to the response of symbiotic N2 fixation to elevated p CO2 in field-grown T. repens .  相似文献

Abstract. Poplar shoots ( Populus euramericana L.) obtained from cuttings were exposed for 6 or 8 weeks to NH3 concentrations of 50 and 100 μgm−3 or filtered air in fumigation chambers. After this exposure the rates of NH3 uptake, transpiration, CO2 assimilation and respiration of leaves were measured using a leaf chamber. During the long-term exposure also modulated chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were carried out to obtain information about the photosynthetic performance of individual leaves. Both fluorescence and leaf chamber measurements showed a higher photosynthetic activity of leaves exposed to 100 μg NH3 m−3. These leaves showed also a larger leaf conductance and a larger uptake rate of NH3 than leaves exposed to 50 μg m−3 NH3 or filtered air. The long-term NH3 exposure did not induce an internal resistance against NH3 transport in the leaf, nor did it affect the leaf cuticle. So, not only at a short time exposure, but also at a long-term exposure NH3 uptake into leaves can be calculated from data on the boundary layer and stomatal resistance for H2O and ambient NH3-concentration. Furthermore, the NH3 exposure had no effect on the relation between CO2-assimilation and stomatal conductance, indicating that NH3 in concentrations up to 100 μg m−3 has no direct effect on stomatal behaviour; for example, by affecting the guard or contiguous cells of the stomata.  相似文献

The effects of elevated partial pressure of CO2 ( p CO2) and temperature, alone and in combination, on survival, calcification and dissolution were investigated in the crustose coralline alga Lithophyllum cabiochae . Algae were maintained in aquaria during 1 year at near-ambient conditions of irradiance, at ambient or elevated temperature (+3 °C) and at ambient [ca. 400 parts per million (ppm)] or elevated p CO2 (ca. 700 ppm). Algal necroses appeared at the end of summer under elevated temperature first at 700 ppm (60% of the thallus surface) and then at 400 ppm (30%). The death of algae was observed only under elevated temperature and was two- to threefold higher under elevated p CO2. During the first month of the experiment, net calcification was significantly reduced under elevated p CO2. At the end of the summer period, net calcification decreased by 50% when both temperature and p CO2 were elevated while no effect was found under elevated temperature and elevated p CO2 alone. In autumn and winter, net calcification in healthy algae increased with increasing temperature, independently of the p CO2 level, while necroses and death in the algal population caused a net dissolution at elevated temperature and p CO2. The dissolution of dead algal thalli was affected by elevated p CO2, being two- to fourfold higher than under ambient p CO2. These results suggest that net dissolution is likely to exceed net calcification in L. cabiochae by the end of this century. This could have major consequences in terms of biodiversity and biogeochemistry in coralligenous communities dominated by these algae.  相似文献

Influence of soil O2 and CO2 on root respiration for Agave deserti   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Respiration measured as CO2 efflux was determined at various soil O2 and CO2 concentrations for individual, attached roots of a succulent perennial from the Sonoran Desert, Agave deserti Engelm. The respiration rate increased with increasing O2 concentration up to about 16% O2 for established roots and 5% O2 for rain roots (fine branch roots on established roots induced by wetting of the soil) and then remained fairly constant up to 21% O2. When O2 was decreased from 21 to 0%, the respiration rates were similar to those obtained with increasing O2 concentration. The CO2 concentration in the root zone, which for the shallow-rooted A. deserti in the field was about 1 000 μl l-1, did not affect root respiration at concentrations up to 2 000 μl l-1, but higher concentrations reduced it, respiration being abolished at 20 000 μl l-1 (2%) CO2 for both established and rain roots. Upon lowering CO2 to 1 000 μl l-1 after exposure to concentrations up to 10000 μl l-1 CO2, inhibition of respiration was reversible. Uptake of the vital stain neutral red by root cortical cells was reduced to zero, indicating cell death, in about 4 h at 2% CO2, substantiating the detrimental effects of high soil CO2 concentrations on roots of A. deserti . This CO2 response may explain why roots of desert succulents tend to occur in porous, well-aerated soils.  相似文献
