1. We examined species–environment relationships and community concordance between aquatic bryophytes and insects in boreal springs. We sampled bryophytes (Marchantiophyta and Bryophyta), benthic macroinvertebrates and environmental variables in 138 springs in Finland, spanning a latitudinal gradient of 1000 km. Macroinvertebrates were subdivided into two groups: Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Coleoptera (EPTC taxa) and chironomid midges (Diptera; Chironomidae). Our aim was to test whether EPTC taxa could be used as surrogates in biodiversity surveys and bioassessment for the two less-well known organism groups, chironomids and bryophytes.
2. Bryophyte assemblages were clearly differentiated along gradients in thermal conditions and water chemistry (pH, conductivity). Chironomids and EPTC were also differentiated in relation to thermal conditions and, to a lesser extent, physical habitat variables, but were only weakly associated to spring water chemistry. Chironomid and EPTC assemblages were more concordant with each other than with bryophytes, but all concordances were relatively weak.
3. Our results suggest that even if the overall compositional patterns of the three taxonomic groups were significantly concordant, the relative importance of environmental drivers underlying their community compositions differed strongly. The results thus imply that spring bryophytes and insects are relatively poor surrogates for each other. The proportion of spring specialists was highest in bryophytes, promoting their primacy for spring bioassessment and biodiversity conservation. We suggest that adequate variation in water chemistry be assured to protect spring bryophyte biodiversity, whereas preserving the physical variation of springs is more important for macroinvertebrates.  相似文献

Mediterranean watercourses are among the most threatened ecosystems worldwide, being increasingly important to understand environmental drivers of biotic assemblages. Our aim was to provide a comprehensive picture of bryophyte communities in Mediterranean rivers and to determine the environmental factors that influence their distribution. We used floristic data collected for inter-calibration purposes under the European Water Framework Directive and River Habitat Survey, from 474 river reaches in six countries of the European Mediterranean basin. We analysed data through classification, ordination and environmental niche modelling techniques, and classified taxa according to biogeographic and aquatic habitat frameworks developed specifically for bryophytes. These analyses revealed four types of communities influenced by spatio-temporal precipitation patterns, altitude and water chemistry factors, most notably calcium and manganese. Community types are compositionally differentiated, although they share some core taxa and show an overall tendency to have several temperate and exclusively aquatic taxa despite the intermittent nature of water flow in highly seasonal Mediterranean rivers. The modelling approach can be improved at a more local scale when more bryological data and higher-resolution environmental information become available. Given future scenarios of climate change and human alteration of hydrological regimes, broader scales studies are needed to monitor shifts in bryophyte communities.  相似文献

Bryophytes are some of the most sensitive biological indicators of environmental change. Springs have a significant presence of bryophytes and so are ideal habitats for studying their relationship with the environment. We tested whether bryophyte assemblages can be explained with macro-, meso- and micro-ecological variables (i.e. seasonal climate, altitude, water pH and conductivity) sampling bryophytes from 198 semi-natural springs distributed along montane regions in the north-eastern Iberian Peninsula. We tested the influence of environmental variables on bryophyte assemblages in springs using sparse Partial Least Squares. Our results show that variability in bryophyte assemblages is explained by seasonal climate (temperature and precipitation from winter, spring, summer and autumn and temperature and precipitation seasonality), altitude and water conductivity. The results obtained by the present study will be useful for predicting bryophyte diversity in springs using simple and easy to obtain variables such as climate, water pH and conductivity.  相似文献

The Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD) requires the analysis of biological elements of aquatic ecosystems to assess water quality. Diatoms are the component of the periphyton most commonly used to classify lotic environments. Within the context of the WFD the concept of ‘reference conditions’ was introduced and biological quality of watercourses is expressed as Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR). This study was carried out in Alto Adige/Südtirol (Province of Bolzano-Bozen, northern Italy), belonging to the Alpine eco-region, and to the hydro-ecoregion Inner Alps. During 2006–2009, epilithic diatoms were sampled from monitoring and reference sites of seven stream types. Diatom assemblages were analysed with TWINSPAN and CCA analyses to investigate species association and distribution in relation to stream characteristics. Altitude and geology resulted to be the most important factors influencing diatom assemblage composition, and were used to describe new stream types. Indicator species analysis was used to characterize reference assemblages. The biological quality of watercourses was assessed using different diatom indices: Specific Pollution sensitivity Index (IPS), Eutrophication and Pollution Index with Diatoms (EPI-D), Trophic Index (TI). We tested also the Intercalibration Common Metric index (ICM).  相似文献

The definition of biogeographic regions provides a fundamental framework for a range of basic and applied questions in biogeography, evolutionary biology, systematics and conservation. Previous research suggested that environmental forcing results in highly congruent regionalization patterns across taxa, but that the size and number of regions depends on the dispersal ability of the taxa considered. We produced a biogeographic regionalization of European bryophytes and hypothesized that (1) regions defined for bryophytes would differ from those defined for other taxa due to the highly specific eco-physiology of the group and (2) their high dispersal ability would result in the resolution of few, large regions. Species distributions were recorded using 10,000 km2 MGRS pixels. Because of the lack of data across large portions of the area, species distribution models employing macroclimatic variables as predictors were used to determine the potential composition of empty pixels. K-means clustering analyses of the pixels based on their potential species composition were employed to define biogeographic regions. The optimal number of regions was determined by v-fold cross-validation and Moran’s I statistic. The spatial congruence of the regions identified from their potential bryophyte assemblages with large-scale vegetation patterns is at odds with our primary hypothesis. This reinforces the notion that post-glacial migration patterns might have been much more similar in bryophytes and vascular plants than previously thought. The substantially lower optimal number of clusters and the absence of nested patterns within the main biogeographic regions, as compared to identical analyses in vascular plants, support our second hypothesis. The modelling approach implemented here is, however, based on many assumptions that are discussed but can only be tested when additional data on species distributions become available, highlighting the substantial importance of developing integrated mapping projects for all taxa in key biogeographically areas of Europe, and the Mediterranean peninsulas in particular.  相似文献

According to the guidelines of the European Water Framework Directive, assessment of the ecological quality of streams and rivers should be based on type-specific reference conditions. Moreover to support biological indicators an hydromorphological analysis is also requested for each river type. The rationale for including an habitat assessment in biomonitoring study is that a biological community can be influenced by habitat quality just as water chemistry. In the present work benthic macroinvertebrates were analysed in a specific river type of Central Italy (small-sized streams, volcanic-siliceous), to identify taxa assemblages at the mesohabitat scale and to test how common measures of benthic community used in biomonitoring differ between riffles and pools in order to evaluate if differences may influence water quality classification.Macroinvertebrates were collected in 10 selected streams, covering the whole quality range present in the geographic area from ‘reference sites’ to human-impacted sites, along a pool–riffle sequence following a multihabitat sampling protocol. We compared assemblage of macroinvertebrates found in different mesohabitats using principal component analysis (PCA). Similar site grouping was obtained in riffle, pool and abiotic analysis. The measures of diversity and abundance were used as replicates in ANOVA analysis to test differences between pools and riffles within the groups of sites. There were no significant differences in terms of taxa richness and total abundance. When we compared the abundance of each taxon we found significant differences only in the group of reference sites with 18 taxa (about 25%) that showed a significant habitat preference. Our findings support that macroinvertebrates assemblages reflected primarily the environmental conditions and differences at mesohabitat scale are strongly correlated to hydromorphological condition and are maximized in reference sites. However such differences do not influence the ecological status assessment in this typology.  相似文献

We present a study of benthic foraminiferal assemblages from an Ypresian–Lutetian distal submarine fan system in the lower bathyal Gorrondatxe section (Basque-Cantabrian Basin, northern Spain). The objective of our study is to analyze the benthic foraminiferal distribution patterns and their response to sedimentary disturbance and related factors.Assemblages contain a high percentage of allochthonous taxa, such as asterigerinids and other shallow water taxa, which were transported downslope by turbidity currents.Detailed quantitative analyses, supported by R-mode cluster and Detrended Correspondence Analyses (after removing allochthonous taxa from the foraminiferal counts) allowed us to identify 6 assemblages that are divided into two groups related to the turbidite content in the Gorrondatxe section. Assemblages 1, characteristic of the turbidite-poor intervals with low sedimentary disturbance, include assemblage 1a (with highly diverse common middle–lower bathyal calcareous taxa) assemblage 1b (with common agglutinated taxa, mainly trochamminids), and assemblage 1c (characterized by calcareous taxa that are also common in the turbidite-rich interval).Assemblages 2, characterized by a high dominance, prevail in the turbidite-rich interval, and include assemblage 2a (characterized by the dominance of infaunal bolivinids and epifaunal cibicids), assemblage 2b (typified by moderate to low diversity and dominated by deep-infaunal Globobulimina species), and assemblage 2c (typified by very abundant suspension-feeding astrorhizids). The high abundance of bolivinids and Globobulimina species may be related to an enhanced input of low-quality organic matter transported by turbidity currents to the seafloor, representing different stages of recolonisation after disturbance and different energy regimes. High current activity was probably responsible for the abundance of cibicids, while moderate to low diverse and high dominance assemblages characterize the recolonisation of the substrate after disturbance. We conclude that sedimentary disturbance and other related factors such as current activity, resuspension of sediments at the seafloor, and supply of organic matter (and its quality) played an important role in the distribution of benthic foraminifera in the Gorrondatxe section. The identification of allochthonous taxa emerges as an essential aspect of the study of environments with sedimentary disturbance.  相似文献

The interplay among microorganisms profoundly impacts biogeochemical cycles in the ocean. Culture-based work has illustrated the diversity of diatom–prokaryote interactions, but the question of whether these associations can affect the spatial distribution of microbial communities is open. Here, we investigated the relationship between assemblages of diatoms and of heterotrophic prokaryotes in surface waters of the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean in early spring. The community composition of diatoms and that of total and active prokaryotes were different among the major ocean zones investigated. We found significant relationships between compositional changes of diatoms and of prokaryotes. In contrast, spatial changes in the prokaryotic community composition were not related to geographic distance and to environmental parameters when the effect of diatoms was accounted for. Diatoms explained 30% of the variance in both the total and the active prokaryotic community composition in early spring in the Southern Ocean. Using co-occurrence analyses, we identified a large number of highly significant correlations between abundant diatom species and prokaryotic taxa. Our results show that key diatom species of the Southern Ocean are each associated with a distinct prokaryotic community, suggesting that diatom assemblages contribute to shaping the habitat type for heterotrophic prokaryotes.  相似文献

The biotic response of ecological systems to disturbances has traditionally been explained by attributes of the disturbance event itself, such as its intensity, the distribution of traits within a community related to resistance (e.g. physiological, morphological or life‐history) or their interaction. Another less investigated mechanism explaining variation in response to disturbance is microtopographic heterogeneity, which might modify survival rates unevenly. We tested the hypothesis that forest floor microtopography creates small‐scale refugia for bryophytes following conventional clear‐cut logging by comparing a) survival of transplanted bryophytes and b) compositional changes of forest floor bryophytes among three different positions: on the northern side of boulders and stumps and on unsheltered forest floor. The investigation was carried out as a before‐and‐after study in 12 Swedish boreal forests (eight stands subjected to clear‐cutting and four reference stands). Significantly more bryophyte transplants survived where they were sheltered by boulders and stumps (30 and 29% respectively) compared to on level forest floor (10%) and less compositional changes occurred in sheltered microtopographic positions than on level forest floor. Shelter from boulders and stumps increased survival from both microclimatic stress and mechanical disturbance but not from burial by logging residues. Our findings provide evidence that microtopography can modify initial responses to disturbances by creating small‐scale refugia. Further studies are needed to determine whether this phenomenon is commonly occurring among other organisms and in other ecosystems and to what extent scattered in‐situ survivors can increase the recovery rate following disturbances.  相似文献

This study represents a contribution to the developing knowledge about the microfloristic provincialism affecting Upper Triassic palynoflora. The compositional differences existing between the Onslow and the Ipswich microfloras are mainly based on the presence, in the Onslow microflora, of a diverse and more varied group of gymnosperm pollen grains, including typical European elements. In this study, the palynological assemblages recovered from Carnian successions of the western Tethyan margin (Sicily, Tunisia, Albany, Libya and Israel) are compared with those of West Timor microfloral assemblages, which have been referred to the Onslow microflora of southern hemisphere. They contain several common taxa, mainly consisting of conifer miospores widely recorded in Carnian European successions and less frequently recovered in the Carnian of western and eastern Australia. The number of Circum-Mediterranean sporomorphs in the Onslow microflora assemblages is wider than previously thought, providing new evidences to extend the distribution of the Onslow microflora to include Carnian associations formerly assigned to the Circum-Mediterranean assemblages. These broad microfloral affinities seem to indicate the existence of a homogeneous microflora that maintains, with minor variations, its composition from western Tethys coasts to the northern Australian margin (West Timor). The parent plant community grew in a coastal environment, along the continental margins; the establishment of an equable climatic regime influenced by warm equatorial currents and suitable humid conditions probably conditioned its diffusion. It has long been recognised that the strong floral provinciality which characterised the Late Triassic world gave way to a more homogeneous flora in the Early Jurassic. The decrease in macrofloral diversity is associated with a less pronounced microfloristic provincialism, which in turn coincides with the rise, to strong dominance, of cheirolepidiaceous conifers (Circumpolles producers). This important microfloristic event occurs in the southern hemisphere during the Early Jurassic, however this study reveals their incipient diffusion during the Norian.  相似文献

Quantitative analysis based on 93 bryophytoecological relevés and on exhaustive inventories from six forest structures (dense stands of Quercus ilex or Quercus suber) of different surfaces, isolated within the vineyard near Pierrefeu-du-Var, the outlying contact zones I (shrubby vegetation) and i (herbaceous vegetation) and the neighbouring vineyards. The results show that the contact zones take a rather limited reserve part in the maintenance of the global richness in terricolous bryophytes (RGB) of the forest structures, because the former are richer in photophilous and nitratophilous taxa than the latter. For what concerns the richness in terricolous forest bryophytes (RBF), the contact zones at the Défens-du-Bécasson (northern exposure, surface = 77 617 m2) are particularly humid and shady. They house a notable number of hygrosciophilous and xerosciophilous forest bryophytes. Their role in the maintenance of the RBF of the forest zone is consequently more important than in the other studied stations which correspond to islets and hedges of more reduced surface (13 115 to 1 165 m2), located in a dry environment.  相似文献

Palynological analyses of 60 surface sediment samples from estuarine environments near Vancouver Island, including the Georgia Strait (GS), the Effingham (EFF) and the Seymour–Belize (SB) Inlets were performed in order to document the distribution of dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and their relationship to hydrographic conditions, productivity and nutrient concentrations. We tested transfer functions using the analogue method, and suggest that dinoflagellate cyst assemblages can be used to reconstruct primary productivity, temperature and salinity. The EFF and SB Inlets are characterized by a dominance of autotrophic taxa, particularly Operculodinium centrocarpum, whereas the Protoperidinioid and gymnodinial heterotrophic taxa such as Quinquecuspis concreta and Brigantedinium spp. dominate the assemblages of the GS. Multivariate analysis shows that this distribution is closely linked to primary productivity, sea-surface temperature (SST) and spring silica concentration. The abundance of autotrophic taxa in the EFF and SB Inlets is associated with high primary productivity and low summer SST, indicating summer upwelling of coastal British Columbia, whereas the heterotrophic taxa that characterizes the GS assemblages are related to low productivity, high summer SST and high silica concentration during spring. Multivariate analysis shows that the most important environmental parameters related to dinocyst distribution in the restricted embayment of the GS, are distance to the shore, distance to Vancouver Harbor, spring sea surface salinity (SSS), spring phosphate concentration and spring productivity. The autotrophic taxa are generally more common in coastal and shallow waters, but Spiniferites ramosus and Pentapharsodinium dalei show an opposite correlation to spring productivity and salinity. P. dalei is particularly abundant around Vancouver Harbor, near highly urbanized shores and within the Fraser River plume, where salinity is low and spring productivity and continental runoff are high. S. ramosus shows its highest abundance on the western coast of GS. Protoperidinioid and gymnodinial cysts characterize distal zones within the central and southern GS that are associated with a mixture of brackish waters coming from the Fraser River and deep upwelling waters entering the GS via Juan de Fuca Strait. The relationship between dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and primary productivity in these estuarine systems differs from that in oceanic and outer neritic zones, where the abundance of heterotrophic taxa is commonly associated with upwelling and high productivity.  相似文献

Coastal lagoons are highly productive ecosystems, which are experiencing a variety of human disturbances at increasing frequency. Bacteria are key ecological players within lagoons, yet little is known about the magnitude, patterns and drivers of diversity in these transitional environments. We carried out a seasonal study in the Venice Lagoon (Italy) and the adjacent sea, to simultaneously explore diversity patterns in different domains (pelagic, benthic) and their spatio‐temporal variability, and test the role of environmental gradients in structuring assemblages. Community composition differed between lagoon and open sea, and between domains. The dominant phyla varied temporally, with varying trends for the two domains, suggesting different environmental constraints on the assemblages. The percentage of freshwater taxa within the lagoon increased during higher river run‐off, pointing at the lagoon as a dynamic mosaic of microbial taxa that generate the metacommunity across the whole hydrological continuum. Seasonality was more important than spatial variability in shaping assemblages. Network analyses indicated more interactions between several genera and environmental variables in the open sea than the lagoon. Our study provides evidences for a temporally dynamic nature of bacterial assemblages in lagoons and suggests that an interplay of seasonally influenced environmental drivers shape assemblages in these vulnerable ecosystems.  相似文献

Tree crowns typically cover the vast majority of the surface area of trees, but they are rarely considered in diversity surveys of epiphytic bryophytes and lichens, especially in temperate Europe. Usually only stems are sampled. We assessed the number of bryophyte and lichen species on stems and in crowns of 80 solitary sycamore maple trees (Acer pseudoplatanus) at six sites in wooded pastures in the northern Alps. The total number of species detected per tree ranged from 13 to 60 for bryophytes, from 25 to 67 for lichens, and from 42 to 104 for bryophytes and lichens considered together. At the tree level, 29 % of bryophyte and 61 % of lichen species were recorded only in the crown. Considering all sampled trees together, only 4 % of bryophyte, compared to 34 % of lichen species, were never recorded on the stem. Five out of 10 red-listed bryophyte species and 29 out of 39 red-listed lichen species were more frequent in crowns. The species richness detected per tree was unexpectedly high, whereas the proportion of exclusive crown species was similar to studies from forest trees. For bryophytes, in contrast to lichens, sampling several stems can give a good estimation of the species present at a site. However, frequency estimates may be highly biased for lichens and bryophytes if crowns are not considered. Our study demonstrates that tree crowns need to be considered in research on these taxa, especially in biodiversity surveys and in conservation tasks involving lichens and to a lesser degree also bryophytes.  相似文献

Temporary streams are characterised by short periods of seasonal or annual stream flow after which streams contract into waterholes or pools of varying hydrological connectivity and permanence. Although these streams are widespread globally, temporal variability of their ecology is understudied, and understanding the processes that structure community composition in these systems is vital for predicting and managing the consequences of anthropogenic impacts. We used multivariate and univariate approaches to investigate temporal variability in macroinvertebrate compositional data from 13 years of sampling across multiple sites from autumn and spring, in South Australia, the driest state in the driest inhabited continent in the world. We examined the potential of land-use, geographic and environmental variables to predict the temporal variability in macroinvertebrate assemblages, and also identified indicator taxa, that is, those highly correlated with the most significantly associated physical variables. Temporal trajectories of macroinvertebrate communities varied within site in both seasons and across years. A combination of land-use, geographic and environmental variables accounted for 24% of the variation in community structure in autumn and 27% in spring. In autumn, community composition among sites were more closely clustered together relative to spring suggesting that communities were more similar in autumn than in spring. In both seasons, community structure was most strongly correlated with conductivity and latitude, and community structure was more associated with cover by agriculture than urban land-use. Maintaining temporary streams will require improved catchment management aimed at sustaining seasonal flows and critical refuge habitats, while also limiting the damaging effects from increased agriculture and urban developments.  相似文献

Oil sands mining disturbs thousands of hectares of boreal landscape, about 65% of which is wetland. Its reclamation will constitute the largest wetland reclamation project in Canadian history. We developed a unified analytical framework that we used to set reclamation targets and evaluate reclamation progress using submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV). We sampled SAV in 38 minimally disturbed wetlands to establish a reference condition and compared this to SAV in 25 reclamation wetlands. We observed 26 taxa: all were native and five are regionally rare. Using a combination of ordination, clustering, and indicator species analysis, we identified seven SAV assemblages, distinguishable based on 10 indicator species. The assemblages found in wetlands contaminated by tailings had significantly fewer taxa. Using joint plots, we demonstrate that they differ in terms of environmental variables reflecting depth, slope, salinity, transparency, water and sediment nutrient levels, and alkalinity. Collectively, 74% of reference wetlands had SAV belonging to either marsh or fen-marsh assemblages that we consider suitable targets for reclamation. Having multiple reclamation targets avoids creating a homogenous post-mining landscape with low gamma diversity. Using complementary multivariate and categorical tests, we found that reclamation wetlands failed to support either of these dominant reference assemblages. Instead, every reclamation wetland supported one of five atypical SAV assemblages, each of which was uncommon (<10%) among reference wetlands. The analytical framework we developed can be applied to other ecosystems or taxa to develop targets for reclamation, to evaluate reclamation progress, and to identify environmental characteristics associated with reclamation targets.  相似文献

Seasonal variability of macroinvertebrate assemblages was examined in two regions of South Africa: Western Cape and Mpumalanga. Sampling was undertaken at reference sites using the rapid bioassessment method SASS4 (South African Scoring System, Version 4). This study examined the influence of sampling season on the occurrence of taxa, macroinvertebrate assemblages and SASS scores. In the Western Cape a few taxa were more common at certain times of the year, and multivariate analysis of macroinvertebrate assemblages showed that assemblages grouped by season. The number of taxa and the Average Score per Taxon (ASPT) were significantly different among seasons in the Western Cape, with fewer taxa recorded in winter compared to summer, and significantly higher ASPT values recorded in winter and spring than summer and autumn. Whereas more taxa were recorded in autumn than in spring, a higher proportion of sensitive and high-scoring taxa were recorded in spring. In Mpumalanga macroinvertebrate assemblages did not group by season, and differences in SASS scores were not significant, although more taxa were recorded in winter than in spring or autumn, and ASPTs were slightly higher in winter than in spring. Results are discussed in relation to ecological reference conditions and the interpretation of bioassessment data.  相似文献

In this study, we explore the relationship between the modern assemblages of organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts and sea-surface conditions (temperature, salinity, primary productivity) and water depth and distance to the coast. Statistical treatments were performed on 95 surface sediment samples from sites located along the south-western Mexican coast (14.76° N to 24.75°N). Redundancy analysis (RDA) illustrates that the principal parameters correlated with the regional cyst distribution are the distance to the coast and the productivity in the upper water column, which is closely related to upwelling intensity. Empirical observations coupled with RDA provide insight into the spatial coverage of some cyst taxa produced by dinoflagellate species potentially responsible for harmful algal blooms along the coast. They also allow the recognition of four zones of assemblages, which are linked to the upwelling intensity and the productivity and characterize La Paz Bay, the south-western Mexican margin (from 15.95° N to 23.11° N), the northern part of the Gulf of Tehuantepec and the southern part of the Gulf of Tehuantepec.  相似文献

Boreal peatlands, which contain a large fraction of the world's soil organic carbon pool, may be significantly affected by changes in climate and land use, with attendant feedback to climate through changes in albedo, fluxes of energy or trace gases, and soil carbon storage. The response of peatlands to changing environmental conditions will probably be dictated in part by scale-dependent topographic heterogeneity, which is known to interact with hydrology, vegetation, nutrients, and emissions of trace gases. Because the bryophyte community can contribute the majority of aboveground production in bogs, we investigated how microscale topography affects the response of bryophyte species production and cover to warming (using overhead infrared lamps) and manipulations of water-table height within experimental mesocosms. We removed 27 intact peat monoliths (2.1-m2 surface area, 0.5-0.7 m depth) from a bog in northern Minnesota, USA, and subjected them to three warming and three water-table treatments in a fully crossed factorial design. Between 1994 and 1998, we determined annual production of the four dominant bryophyte taxa within three microtopographic zones (low, medium, and high relative to the water table). We also estimated species cover and calculated changes in topography and roughness of the bryophyte surface through time. Total production of all bryophytes, and production of the individual taxa Polytrichum strictum, Sphagnum magellanicum, and Sphagnum Section Acutifolia, were about 100% greater in low microtopographic zones than in high zones, and about 50% greater in low than in medium zones. Production of bryophytes increased along the gradient of increasing water-table heights, but in most years, total production of bryophytes was negatively correlated with height above the set water table only for the wettest water-table treatment. Although bryophyte production was unaffected by the warming treatments, the bryophyte surface flattened in proportion to the degree of warming. These results indicate that production of bryophytes is driven most strongly by the absolute and relative height of the bryophyte surface above the water table. Predicted changes in water-table height commensurate with changes in surface temperature may thus affect both production and superficial topography of bryophyte communities.  相似文献
