The variation in two sets of morphological characters of the flowers of the highly inbreedingScleranthus annuus (Caryophyllaceae) was assessed using 15–20 plants from each of 20 natural populations from the southernmost region of Sweden. The stamen fertility data set consisted of 10 characters describing the degree of fertility of the ten stamens/staminoids, while the sepal/gynoecium data set comprised 10 sepal characters, together with style and stigma length. Substantial variation was found in both the degree of development and the fertility of the stamens, the degree of variability in stamen fertility being related to stamen position within the flower. Considerable variation was found in the characters of the sepal and the gynoecium. Hierarchical analyses of variance indicated that 29% of the variation in total male reproductive effort was distributed among populations, 28% among plants within populations and 43% represented within-plant variation. The corresponding averages for the characters from the sepal/gynoecium data set are 26, 38, and 35%: a greater proportion of the total variance in female reproductive characters is accounted for by among individual variation than is the case with the male reproductive characters. Significance tests of Mahalanobis distances derived by canonical variate analyses indicated that all populations were significantly separated using the sepal/gynoecium data set, while only 50% of the pairwise comparisons on the basis of the stamen fertility data set were significant. Cluster analysis did not reveal any aggregation of the populations. The incongruence of the two data sets and their ability to discriminate between the populations is discussed.  相似文献

The flowers ofDillenia are highly elaborate pollen-flowers adapted to buzzpollination byXylocopa bees. Two major forms of floral architecture (revolver flowers and roundabout flowers) are associated with two different pollination modes. In the first (e.g.,D. suffruticosa), the pollination organs are connivent to a cone; the pollinator grasps the entire cone with its legs and buzzes it; it revolves around its axis and repeats the buzzing in different positions. In the second (e.g.,D. alata, D. philippinensis), the stylar branches are spreading and the stamens are arranged in two sets of two different forms and colourations. The inner set has fewer and longer stamens that are cryptic pollination stamens; those of the outer set are shorter but optically conspicuous feeding stamens. The pollinator squeezes itself under the stylar branches and handles only the outer set by grasping part of the set at a time; it moves tangentially around the flower with several buzzing-stops; when buzzing pollen is sprayed onto its side and back from the inner stamen set. Centrifugal polyandrous androecia are a constitutive feature of flowers inDilleniaceae. InDillenia the centrifugal initiation of stamens proceeds for an unusually long time and is still not finished when the gynoecium is completely closed (in contrast toTetracera). The differentiation of heteranthery seems to be functionally correlated with the extended centrifugal inception. The latest formed stamens are small and sterile in many species. Generic features ofDillenia flowers can be understood from the roundabout architecture: big size, increased number of carpels, syncarpy forming a firm pedestal and spreading firm stylar branches with small, concave stigmas at the end, stamens with short, stout filaments and much elongated poricidal anthers, heteranthery, recurved stamens of the inner set.Dedicated to emer. Five new taxa with affinities to extant lineages that diverged at an early stage from the main line of eudicot evolution are established from the Early Cretaceous (late Aptian or early Albian) Vale de Agua locality, Portugal. Staminate flowers of Lusistemon striatus and pistillate flowers of Lusicarpus planatus are unisexual without rudiments of the opposite gender. They are linked by the association of an unusual pollen type found in situ in the stamens and adhering to the stigmatic surface. The staminate flower, Lusistemon striatus, is composed of six stamens subtended by small perianth parts. The arrangement of the stamens is difficult to ascertain, but their variable sizes suggests a spiral arrangement. Pollen found in situ is tricolpate and striate with densely‐spaced, sparsely diverging and anastomosing muri that are aligned more or less parallel to the polar axis. The muri have a conspicuous supratectal ornamentation of fine transverse ridges. The granular infratectal layer forms an indistinct internal reticulum. The foot layer is thin. Pollen is closely similar to dispersed grains from the Aptian of Egypt described as STRIOTRI‐SEGMUR. It also resembles pollen of the dispersed pollen genus Rutihesperipites, as well as some dispersed pollen assigned to Striatopollis. Pistillate flowers of Lusicarpus planatus consist of a bicarpellate, syncarpous gynoecium borne on a short stalk. The styles are bent outwards and expose the double‐crested stigmatic regions on their ventral sides. The only organ preserved besides the gynoecium is a lateral scale‐like organ at the base of the stalk. Pollen of the same type found in Lusistemon striatus occurs on the stigmatic surface of the carpels. Comparisons with extant taxa demonstrate that Lusistemon and Lusicarpus share many characters with early diverging groups of eudicots, in particular Buxaceae. In addition to the LusistemonLusicarpus flowers, the Vale de Agua samples also contain three other pistillate reproductive structures that may be related to early diverging lineages of eudicots. Silucarpus camptostylus has a bicarpellate and syncarpous gynoecium with two styles; Valecarpus petiolatus and Aguacarpus hirsutus have tricarpellate gynoecia that are distinguished from each other in the shape and extension of the stigma as well as other details.  相似文献

The enigmatic Central American tree Haptanthus hazlettii has recently been placed in Buxaceae (Buxales) by molecular evidence. However, Haptanthus appears morphologically to be fundamentally different from other Buxales in having pluriovular carpels with parietal placentation and reduced male reproductive units of an obscure morphological nature. The latter have been interpreted to be pairs of unistaminate flowers, or single flowers, either bearing two stamens or a pair of phyllomes with adnate introrse anthers. We (re‐)investigated the structure of the inflorescences and flowers of Haptanthus in order to clarify their homologies with reproductive structures of Buxales. We found that, despite some distinctive traits of flower morphology, Haptanthus shares many floral characters, including the opposite and pairwise arrangement of floral organs and the fusion between perianth members and stamens, with some Buxales and other early‐branching eudicots. The plicate and pluriovular gynoecium of Haptanthus may be the result of a drastic elongation of the symplicate zone, accompanied by an increase in ovule number, and is thus a derived trait in Buxales. A new genus and species of Actinidiaceae (Parasaurauia allonensis gen. et sp. nov.) are established for fossil flowers and fruits from the early Campanian (Late Cretaceous) Buffalo Creek Member of the Gaillard Formation in central Georgia, USA. The fossil flowers, which are exquisitely preserved as charcoal, have five imbricate, quincuncially arranged sepals and petals. The androecium consists of ten stamens with anthers that are deeply sagittate proximally. The gynoecium is tricarpellate, syncarpous, and has three free styles that emerge from an apical depression in the ovary. The fruit is trilocular and contains numerous ovules on intruded axile placentae. The structure of mature fruits is unknown. Comparisons with extant taxa clearly demonstrate that the affinities of Parasaurauia allonensis are with the Ericales, and particularly with the Actinidiaceae, which have been placed among the Ericales in recent cladistic analyses. Because Parasaurauia allonensis is not identical to any one genus of Actinidiaceae, or other member of the Ericales, phylogenetic relationships of the fossil were evaluated through a cladistic analysis using morphological and anatomical characters. Results of this analysis place Parasaurauia allonensis within the Actinidiaceae as sister to the extant genera Saurauia and Actinidia. Parasaurauia allonensis differs from extant Saurauia only in having ten rather than numerous stamens.  相似文献

The initiation and development of the floral organs of Brassica napus L. (cv. Westar) were examined using the scanning electron microscope. After transition of the vegetative apex into an inflorescence apex, flower primordia were initiated in a helical phyllotactic pattern. The sequence of initiation of the floral organs in a flower bud was that of sepals, stamens, petals and gynoecium. Of the four sepal primordia, the abaxial was initiated first, followed by the two lateral and finally the adaxial primordium. The four long stamens were initiated simultaneously in positions alternating with the sepals. The two short stamens were initiated basipetal to and outside the long stamens, and opposite the lateral sepals. The petals arose on either side of the two short stamens and the gynoecium was produced from the remainder of the apex. During development, the sepal primordia curved sharply at the tips and tightly enclosed the other organs. Stamen primordia developed tetralobed anthers at an early stage while filament elongation occurred just prior to anthesis. A unique pattern of bulbous cells was present on the abaxial surface of the anther. Growth of petal primordia lagged relative to the other floral organs but expansion was rapid prior to anthesis. The gynoecium primordium was characterized by an invagination early in development. At maturity, there was differentiation of a papillate stigma, an elongated style and a long ovary marked externally by sutures and divided internally by a septum. Distinct patterns of cuticular thickenings were observed on the abaxial and adaxial surfaces of the petals and stamens and on the surface of the style. The patterns were less obvious on the sepals and ovary. Stomata were present on both surfaces of the mature sepals, on the style and restricted areas on the abaxial surface of the anthers and nectaries but were absent from the petals, the adaxial surface of the stamens and the ovary. No hairs were present on any of the floral organs.  相似文献

Five different types of pollen tetrads were detected from the short and long stamens of the male and hermaphrodite flowers of the androdioecious species, Mimosa pigra L. Light (LM) and scanning electron microscopes (SEM) were used in this study to redescribe the pollen forms and to identify the various pollen types encountered. An identification key and relative percentages of these pollen types were also presented. The study showed that the long stamens of the male flowers and those of the hermaphrodite ones have five (I, II, III, IV and V) and two (I and V) pollen types respectively, whereas the short stamens of both male and hermaphrodite flowers have only one pollen type (type I). We report here the first incidence of intra‐specific pollen polymorphism in androdioecious species.  相似文献

In Tetracentron sinense of the basal eudicot family Trochodendraceae, the flower primordium, together with the much retarded floral subtending bract primordium appear to form a common primordium. The four tepals and the four stamens are initiated in four distinct alternating pairs, the first tepal pair is in transverse position. The four carpels arise in a whorl and alternate with the stamens. This developmental pattern supports the interpretation of the flower as dimerous in the perianth and androecium, but tetramerous in the gynoecium. There is a relatively long temporal gap between the initiation of the stamens and the carpels. The carpel primordia are then squeezed into the narrow gaps between the four stamens. In contrast to Trochodendron, the residual floral apex after carpel formation is inconspicuous. In their distinct developmental dimery including four tepals and four stamens, flowers of Tetracentron are reminiscent of other, related basal eudicots, such as Buxaceae and Proteaceae.  相似文献

We document distyly in Damnacanthus (Rubiaceae) and investigate pollen morphology in the genus. Within nine taxa in Japan (four species, four varieties and one form), five show distyly. Non-distylous taxa of Damnacanthus always have a long style and short stamens. We examined the pollen morphology of all taxa of Damnacanthus in Japan. The pollen grains of Damnacanthus are 3- to 5-orthocolporate or sometimes loxocolporate. Polymorphic pollen is sometimes observed even within a single flower. Pollen dimorphism is associated with distyly; pollen grains from short-styled (thrum) flowers are significantly larger than those from long-styled (pin) flowers, and the muri are smooth in pin flowers whereas the pollen grains of thrum flowers have minute granules on the top and/or on the sides. In non-distylous taxa, in which the style is longer than stamens, the muri are always provided with minute granules. Interestingly, the pollen grains with granules in the non-distylous taxa contrast with the pollen of the distylous taxa, because granulate pollen grains are found only in thrum flowers. Although Damnacanthus is a stenopalynous genus, the number of colpi is useful for delimiting taxa. Based on palynological characters, we conclude that Damnacanthus should be revised. The inflorescence of Downingia bacigalupii (Campanulaceae; Lobelioideae) is an indeterminate spike. Axillary flowers have a long, linear, inferior ovary with parietal placentation, a pentamerous synsepalous calyx, zygomorphic sympetalous corolla, syngenesious stamens, and a bicarpellate, syncarpous gynoecium. On the basis of floral vascular anatomy the inferior ovary is interpreted as appendicular, representing adnation of outer floral whorls to the gynoecium. Floral ontogeny shows that sepals are initiated in an adaxial to abaxial sequence rather than the 2/5 phyllotaxis reported for other members of Lobelioideae. Growth of the common bases of sepal lobes forms a floral cup and initiation of the following floral whorls occurs along the inner margins of the cup. Continued basal growth of the cup-shaped bud results in the formation of the elongated inferior ovary. Earlier evidence for the interpretation of a cup-shaped receptacle during development of epigynous flowers is reexamined and it is concluded that the concave floral bud of D. bacigalupii can also be interpreted as common growth of connate floral whorls, supporting interpretations based on vascular anatomy. Comparison of floral development between Downingia bacigalupii and Pereskia aculeata (Cactaceae) reveals ontogenetic differences between flowers with appendicular and receptacular cups.  相似文献

Flowers of the organ number (meristic) mutant clavata1-1 of Arabidopsis thaliana (Brassicaceae) were studied to examine timing and patterns of floral organogenesis as compared to the wild type. All clavata1-1 flowers examined had four- instead of two-loculed gynoecia; half showed increased numbers of stamens; and 10% formed increased numbers of sepals. An inflorescence plastochron index was used to establish the timing of developmental events during flower organogenesis. clavata1-1 flowers initiate faster but grow more slowly than in the wild type. The stages of sepal and stamen initiation were prolonged compared to those of the wild type. Although gynoecial initiation was not prolonged, the preceding stage was and it was characterized by a proliferation of meristematic cells above the initiating stamens. The clavata1-1 flower apex did not become wider than that of the wild type until after the establishment of the gynoecium. We propose that clavata1-1 is a heterochronic mutant, where flower organ number increases are due partly to prolongation of organ initiation stages.  相似文献

The inflorescence of Dracontium polyphyllum consists of 150 – 300 flowers arranged in recognisable spirals. The flower has 5 – 6 (90% of observed specimens), or 7 broad tepals enclosing 9 – 12 stamens (occasionally 7) inserted in two whorls. The gynoecium is trilocular (90% of observed specimens) or tetralocular. The tetralocular gynoecia are found at random among the trilocular gynoecia. Each locule encloses an ovule inserted in an axile position, in the median portion of the ovary. Each carpel has its own stylar canal. However, in the upper portion of the style, there is only one common stylar canal. Floral organs are initiated in an acropetal direction in the following sequence: tepals, stamens, and carpels. During later stages of development, the tepals progressively cover the other floral organs. The first floral primordia are initiated on the upper portion of the inflorescence. During early stages of development, the floral primordia have a circular shape. The tepals are initiated nearly simultaneously. During later stages of development, the first whorl of stamens develops in alternation with the tepals and is followed by a second whorl of stamens. The trilocular or tetralocular nature of the ovary is clearly visible during early stages of development of the gynoecium. Recent molecular studies show that Anaphyllopsis A. Hay and Dracontium L. are closely related. However, although pentamerous flowers have been observed in Anaphyllopsis, the developmental morphology of the flower of Dracontium is different from that of Anaphyllopsis.  相似文献

Flowers of Tupidanthus show an extreme case of floral polymery among asterids. Floral development and gynoecium structure have been examined. The floral meristem has a complex folded shape. The tiny calyx is initiated as a continuous ring primordium. The corolla is initiated as a lobed ring and develops into a calyptra. All stamen primordia appear simultaneously as a single whorl. The carpels, also in a single whorl, tend to alternate with the stamens. Some Schefflera species related to Tupidanthus are also studied. The flower of Tupidanthus is interpreted as a result of fasciation. Further investigation should determine whether mutation(s) in gene(s) of the CLAVATA family are responsible for the fasciation here. The significance of Tupidanthus for understanding spatial pattern formation in flowers of Araliaceae, and both functional and developmental constraints in angiosperm flowers with a single polymerous carpel whorl are discussed.  相似文献

Flower, enclosed ovule and tetrasporangiate anther are three major characters distinguishing angiosperms from other seed plants. Morphologically, typical flowers are characterised by an organisation with gynoecium and androecium surrounded by corolla and calyx. Theoretically, flowers are derived from their counterparts in ancient ancestral gymnosperms. However, as for when, how and from which groups, there is no consensus among botanists yet. Although angiosperm-like pollen and angiosperms have been claimed in the Triassic and Jurassic, typical flowers with the aforesaid three key characters are still missing in the pre-Cretaceous age, making many interpretations of flower evolution tentative. Thus searching for flower in the pre-Cretaceous has been a tantalising task for palaeobotanists for a long time. Here, we report a typical flower, Euanthus paniigen. et sp. nov., from the Middle–Late Jurassic of Liaoning, China. Euanthus has sepals, petals, androecium with tetrasporangiate dithecate anthers and gynoecium with enclosed ovules, organised just like in perfect flowers of extant angiosperms. The discovery of Euanthus implies that typical angiosperm flowers have already been in place in the Jurassic, and provides a new insight unavailable otherwise for the evolution of flowers.  相似文献

该研究对地质时期樟科植物花化石的主要类群,即Androglandula、Lauranthus、Mauldinia、Neusenia、Perseanthus和Potomacanthus属分别从属和种的形态特征、分布、地层以及系统意义进行了论述,并结合现代樟科植物从地层和分布、花序类型、花部形态特征和显微构造特征进行了分析。结果表明:(1)樟科植物在中晚白垩纪期,已经起源于劳亚古陆的中纬度区域。(2)樟科植物的花序类型为Mauldinia属的侧生花序类型和假伞形花序类型。(3)花为3基数的两性花,花被片6枚排列为2轮,雄蕊12或6,排列为4、3或2轮,最内轮雄蕊不育,第三轮雄蕊基部常见一对附属腺体,雄蕊药室瓣裂,4或2药室,雌蕊为单心皮。(4)花被片上常有大量的油细胞、并列型气孔器和单细胞毛。该研究结果中樟科花化石的发现,为樟科植物的系统演化提供了古生物学的证据和资料。  相似文献

The floral development and anatomy ofChrysosplenium alternifolium were studied with the scanning electron microscope and light microscope to understand the initiation sequence of the floral organs and the morphology of the flower, and to find suitable floral characters to interpret the systematic position of the genus within the Saxifragaceae. The tetramerous flower shows a highly variable initiation sequence. The median sepals and first stamens arise in a paired sequence resembling a dimerous arrangement, but the first sepal and stamen arise on the side opposite to the bract. Transversal sepals and stamens emerge sequentially, as one side often precedes the other; sepals and stamens occasionally arise on common primordia. Initiation of the gynoecium is more constant with two median carpel primordia arising on a sunken floral apex. Several flowers were found to be pentamerous with a 2/5 initiation sequence. Flowers were invariably found to be apetalous without traces of petals in primordial stages; this condition is interpreted as an apomorphy. It is postulated that the development of a broad gynoecial nectary is responsible for the occurrence of an obdiplostemonous androecium. The gynoecium shows a number of anatomical particularities not observed in other Saxifragaceae. The presence and distribution of colleters is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The family Ericaceae is considered to be mostly hermaphroditic and only in a few cases unisexual or dioecious. Five Argentinian species (Gaultheria antarctica Hook, f., G. caespitosa P. et E., G. phillyreaefolia (Pers.) Sleumer, G. tenuifolia (Phil.) Sleumer and Pernettya insana (Molina) Gunckel), previously described as hermaphroditic, were found by us to have two types of flowers: female and male. Female flowers have both a rudimentary androecium with stamens, in which the anthers are small, collapsed and without pollen grains or are reduced to filaments only, and a perfect gynoecium with well-developed ovules filling the carpel locules. The stigma is expanded and of the wet, papillate type, with copious to slight secretion. The stigma protrudes above the anthers. Male flowers have a well-developed androecium included within the corolla and a reduced gynoecium. Anthers are as long as the filaments, except in G. caespitosa. Pollen is shed as tetrads which are 100% viable. Ovule development ranges from total absence, passing through aborted ovules of various sizes to apparently normal ones. Stigmata are neither expanded nor papillate, except in Pernettya insana. Only in two species do the style and stigma extend beyond the level of the anthers. Heterostyly does not occur in any of the five species studied. Functional dioecy thus characterizes the five species considered and is reported for the first time in the genus Gaultheria.  相似文献

Trillium apetalon Makino is unique amongTrillium in having apetalous flowers. Using scanning electron microscope, the early floral development was observed in comparison with that ofT. kamtschaticum Pallas ex Pursh having petalous flowers. Morphologically petal primordia closely resemble stamen primordia in their more or less narrow and radially symmetric shape and are clearly distinct from sepal primordia with broad bases. Early in floral development sepal primordia are first initiated and subsequently two whorls of three primordia each are formed in rapid sequence, the first three at the corners and the second three at the sides of the triangular floral apex. Based on comparison in position and early developmental processes of their primordia, petals and outer stamens ofTrillium kamtschaticum are equivalent to outer stamens and inner stamens ofT. apetalon. The replacement of petals by outer stamens apparently leads to the loss of petals inTrillium apetalon flowers. Such a replacement can be interpreted in terms of homeosis. The replacement of the petal whorl leads to the serial replacement of the subsequent whorls: outer stamens by inner stamens, and inner stamens by gynoecium inTrillium apetalon. The term ‘serial homeosis’ is introduced for this serial replacement.  相似文献

Two taxa of cupulate magnoliid fossil flowers, Cronquistiflora and Detrusandra, are described from the Late Cretaceous (Turonian, ∼90 million years before present [MYBP]) Raritan (or lower Magothy) Formation of New Jersey. The fossil taxa are represented by flowers at various stages of development, associated fragments of cup-shaped floral receptacles with attached anthers, and isolated anthers. Both taxa have laminar stamens with adaxial thecae and valvate dehiscence. Pollen is boat-shaped and foveolate in anthers associated with Cronquistiflora and spherical with reticulate ornamentation in Detrusandra. Cup-shaped receptacles are externally bracteose in both taxa. The receptacle of Cronquistiflora is broader than the campanulate one of Detrusandra. Cronquistiflora also has more carpels (∼50 in a spiral vs. ∼5 in a whorl or tight spiral). In Detrusandra the carpels are surrounded by dorsiventrally flattened structures (pistillodes?) that are remote from the attachment of the stamens near the distal rim of the receptacular cupule. Detrusandra stigmas are rounded and bilobed, while those of Cronquistiflora, although bilateral in symmetry, are somewhat peltate. The fossil taxa share prominent characters with extant cupulate magnoliids (e.g., Eupomatia, Calycanthus), but also share characters with other magnoliids including Winteraceae. These fossils represent taxa that are character mosaics relative to currently recognized families. Inclusion of these fossils in existing data matrices and ensuing phylogenetic analyses effect changes in tree topologies consistent with their mosaicism relative to modern taxa. But such analyses do not definitively demonstrate the affinities of the fossils other than illustrating that these fossils are generalized magnoliids. Additional analysis of modern and fossil magnoliids is necessary to fully appreciate the phylogenetic significance and positions of these fossil taxa. However, the results of the phylogenetic analyses do introduce the possibility that extinct taxa of Magnoliales with cupulate floral receptacles were transitional between basal angiosperms and those with tricolpate pollen. The fossils provide insights into the timing of evolution of character complexes now associated with coleopteran pollination.  相似文献

A tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) monogenic semidominant mutation, stamenless (sl), which results in homeotic conversions in two adjacent floral whorls, was studied. When grown at standard temperature, flowers of sl/sl plants showed sepaloid petals in the second whorl and strong transformation of stamens to carpels in whorl three. These transformed carpels were fused with each other and with the genuine carpels in the fourth whorl to form a unique gynoecium. The mutation is semidominant since heterozygous plants showed a phenotype intermediate between that of the wild type (WT) and that of homozygous mutant plants, with nearly WT petals but with feminized stamens bearing naked ovules on the base of their adaxial face. The initiation and position of organ primordia in sl/sl flowers were not altered when compared with WT primordia although development of organ primordia in the second and third whorls deviated from WT at an early stage as observed by scanning electron microscopy. The mutant phenotype is temperature sensitive and when sl/sl plants were cultured at low temperature, the morphology of some flowers resembled that of the WT. This reversion of the mutant phenotype is also induced by treatment of young sl/sl plants with gibberellic acid, providing evidence that gibberellin synthesis or sensitivity could mediate the effect of low temperature on the mutant phenotype. Southern blot analyses using a Deficiens-homologous gene from Solanum tuberosum as a probe showed a restriction-fragment-length polymorphism (RFLP) linked to the sl mutation. This result indicates that the mutation affects a Deficiens-like gene that controls the identity of petals and stamens. Received: 10 December 1998 / Accepted: 29 March 1999  相似文献
