In Pseudotsuga menziesii, a secretion fills the micropylar canal about 7 weeks postpollination until fertilization. Micropylar volumes were measured and found to show variation. Dissection of the ovuliferous scales caused excess fluid to be exuded from the micropylar canal, forming a drop at the tip of the micropyle. This drop was collected, and its production quantified in three trees. Volume and percentage of ovules with drops were greatest when the archegonia in the female gametophyte were at central cell and/or egg cell stage. The volume of exuded drops far exceeded that of the micropyle. Production of subsequent drops by the ovules further confirms that the fluid is actively produced upon dissection Received: 19 September 1998 / Revision accepted: 26 October 1998  相似文献

In Sequoiadendron ovules are borne inside the ovulate cone, and pollination drops secreted from these ovules collect pollen. We examined: (1) the relation between ovular position and pollen capture; (2) pollen behavior when in contact with a pollination drop; and (3) ultrastructure of ovules during pollination drop secretion. During wet periods a water sheet forms on the surface of the cone due to bract shape and wettability. Pollination drops persist inside the wetted cone, and pollen capture resumes immediately after drying. Pollen landing on a pollination drop is taken inside the drop and carried into the micropyle when the drop contracts. Several notable ultrastructural features appear in the nucellus, integument, chalaza, and bract lamina during pollination-drop secretion. The abaxial surface of the lamina is covered by a membrane that may contribute to the wettable nature of the surface.  相似文献

Comparative study on fertilization process in Pinus sylvestris, Pinus mugo and in their putative hybrid swarm individuals was done involving pre-zygotic and post-zygotic stages. The amount of surviving ovules from open pollination reflecting the mode of interaction between pollen grains and nucellar tissue of an ovule averaged at 8.1 of sound ovules per conelet in Pinus sylvestris, 7.3 ovules in the hybrid swarm population and at 4.9 ovules in Pinus mugo. A strong correlation was observed between the number of surviving ovules and the proportion of germinating seeds in the compared species and hybrids. Normal course of embryogenesis in Pinus sylvestris and Pinus mugo contrasted with increased frequency of disturbances observed in the hybrid swarm individuals. The differential survival rates of the ovules and deviations from typical pattern of embryogenesis are discussed from the standpoint of cross-ability relationship between Pinus sylvestris and Pinus mugo.  相似文献

In many plant species with multiovulate ovaries, a considerable reduction in the number of ovules takes place. However, the underlying physiological causes are not clear. In Prunus spp., although flowers present two ovules, usually only one seed is produced. We have followed the development and degeneration of the two ovules in apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) and examined the extent to which carbohydrates within the ovule might be involved in determining the fate of the ovule. While the primary ovule grows in the days following anthesis, growth of the secondary ovule is arrested. Starch distribution along the different ovular tissues exhibits several changes that are different in the two ovules. Primary ovule growth is inversely related to starch content and this growth takes place independently of pollination since it occurs in the same way in pollinated and unpollinated flowers. In the secondary ovule, starch disappears simultaneously from all ovular structures and callose is layered at the chalazal end of the nucellus. The size of the secondary ovule does not change significantly from anthesis to degeneration, and callose starts to accumulate 5 days after anthesis. Likewise, this process occurs independently of pollination. These results are discussed in terms of the implications of the starch content of ovules in fertilization success and ovule fate. 以福州生长的成年杉木(Cunninghamia lanceolata(Lamb.) Hook.)

Patterns of seed and fruit production ofBauhinia ungulata, a small tree legume indigenous in tropical America, were studied in Costa Rica. Only about 8% of flowers produced fruits. The average pod had 19 ovules and about two thirds of these began seed development, with mature pods containing an average of 9.7 mature undamaged seeds. About half of the mature pods were damaged by herbivores and within these, 27% of ovules or seeds had been eaten. Among trees there was no significant variation in pod production, but the number of ovules per pod and seed production per pod varied significantly. Within infructescences most pods were retained at middle positions. Within pods, the probability of an ovule developing into a seed increased toward the distal end. The pattern of seed and fruit production in this species agrees well in general with that reported for other neotropical legumes. The abortion of seeds and fruits can be regarded as a way of controlling maternal investment, and as a response to herbivory.  相似文献

Ovular development and morphology in some magnoliaceae species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Floral phenology and ovular development ofLiriodendron tulipifera are described. The ovule primordia are initiated in December, followed by prominent development in March, and the ovules are mature in May. The inner integument is formed as an annular rim on the incurving ovule primordia, but the outer integument develops as a semi-annular rim interrupted on the concave side of the funicle. Later, an outgrowth, which is interpreted here as an obturator, arises on the concave side of the funicle. The funicular outgrowth arises far from the inner integument, while the outer integument is close to the inner. The outer integument and the funicular outgrowth together form an envelope complex. Later the outer integument produces two distal lobes, which disappear at maturity. Mature ovules of the threeMagnolia species examined have similar lobes. It is suggested that the hood-shaped outer integument is primitive in angiosperms.  相似文献

Summary Brachiaria decumbens has sexual and apomictic reproduction. Apomixis is facultative and of the aposporic type. In early stages of ovule development, differences in the pattern of callose deposition between sexual and apomictic plants were observed which points to possible differences in carbohydrate metabolism. Therefore, a comparative study on carbohydrate metabolism between a sexual diploid ecotype and an apomictic tetraploidB. decumbens was made. A histochemical determination of two enzymes responsible for sucrose degradation, sucrose synthase and invertase, was performed for all stages of ovule development. In addition, the concentrations of sucrose, glucose, and fructose were measured for each stage of ovule development, both for sexual and apomictic plants. The enzymes were localised by immunohistochemistry with heterologous antibodies. A distinct difference between sexual and apomictic plants was observed in the localisation of sucrose synthase activity as well as in the amount of activity, especially in the early stages of ovular development. Invertase activity localisation was comparable between ovules of the sexual and apomictic plants, but its activity is clearly higher in ovules of sexual plants. The localisation of the enzymes coincided with the place of activity. For both sexual and apomictic plants the amount of sucrose in the ovaries increased with the stage of ovule development. Differences in the amount of sucrose between sexual and apomictic plants in ovaries with ovules in comparable stages of development were detected. A delay in the onset of carbohydrate metabolism during early stages of ovule development characterises the apomictic plant.Abbreviations MMC megaspore mother cell - MC meiocyte - MS megaspore - AI apospore initial - CO coenocyte - MES mature embryo sac - SuSy sucrose synthase - INV invertase - BMM buthylmethyl methacrylate - DTT dithiothreitol - DAPI 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole - PBS phosphate-buffered saline  相似文献

Effects of ovular secretions on pollen grains were examined in Pseudotsuga menziesii. The exine is cast off in the micropylar canal. A membranelike structure covers parts of pollen grains and appears to protect them. The outer intine consists of fibrous materials, but it also shows a thicker filamentous appearance in some ovules during pollen elongation. The inner intine is electron-dense. Its fibrous nature is occasionally visible. Dissolution of the outer intine varies in amount and manner in ovules from different trees. The plasma membrane near the pollen wall alternatively appears normal and distorted. These different morphologies of the outer intine and of the plasma membrane are considered to result from secretions from the ovule. The outer intine may contain electron-dense globules that are formed in the tube cell and traverse the inner intine. Pollen tube formation appears to be triggered by a secretion from the ovule. Cross-pollinated grains are less distorted compared with self-pollinated grains.  相似文献

A two-stage in vitro technique was established for the development of interspecific hybrid embryos in the genus Lens. The culture of 14-day-old fertilized ovules on MS medium supplemented with zeatin, followed by the release of the embryos from the ovular integuments, allowed the development of viable and vigorous plants.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It has been claimed that ovules linearly ordered within a fruit differ in their probabilities of reaching maturity. This was investigated by studying the effect the position of an ovule within the pod has on seed abortion and seed production in Bauhinia ungulata. METHODS: Fruits collected during the dry seasons of 1999, 2000 and 2001 were opened, and the number, position and status of each ovule within the fruit were recorded. A GLM model was used to assess the effects of population, tree identity and ovule position within the pod on ovule fertilization, seed abortion, seed damage and seed maturation in two populations of B. ungulata. KEY RESULTS: Nearly 30% of the ovules were not fertilized in 1999; this percentage dropped to 5% the following two years. Seed abortion (50%) and seed damage (15%) were the same every year during the study period. Only 15% of the initial ovules developed into mature seeds in 1999; this value increased to 35% in 2000 and 2001. However, seed survivorship was dependent on the position of the ovule within the pod; non-fertilized and early aborted ovules were found more often near the basal end of the ovary. The frequency of seed damage was not affected by position. Mature seeds were found mainly in the stylar half of fruits, where ovules are likely to be fertilized by fast pollen tubes. CONCLUSIONS: The pattern of seed production in B. ungulata is non-random but is dependent upon the position of the ovule within the pod. The results suggest that the seeds produced within a fruit might differ in their vigour.  相似文献

An efficient method for the regeneration of zygote-derived plants via ovule culture is desirable for overcoming postzygotic cross incompatibility as well as for the development of certain methods for genetic manipulation. High-frequency plantlet regeneration from ovules of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and a hybrid Italian/perennial ryegrass excised 1 to 4 days post pollination was obtained by culture on endosperm-derived feeder cells. Ovules excised 3 or 4 days after anthesis and grown on feeder cells generally regenerated about twice as frequently as ovules grown directly on nutrient medium. In one of the genotypes tested, ovules excised 1, 2 and 3 days post pollination developed into plantlets at percentages of 38.1, 52.0 and 52.8, respectively, using the feeder-cell system.Abbreviations EM endosperm multiplications - OC ovule culture - R regeneration - 2,4-d 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid  相似文献

We investigated use of strain gauges for monitoring the water status of trees by measuring changes in the diameter of the largest spreading branch of a 27-year-old Chamaecyparis obtusa tree. The change in xylem diameter in the branch is more closely related than the change in phloem diameter to the change in leaf water potential. Since the diurnal changes in diameter match the diurnal changes in water balance (sap flow velocity - transpiration), measuring the change in xylem diameter using a strain gauge is useful in evaluating the water status of C. obtusa.  相似文献

Summary The water relations of Picea abies in a healthy stand with green trees only and a declining stand with trees showing different stages of needle yellowing were investigated in northern Bavaria. The present study is based on observations of trees differing in their nutritional status but apparently green on both sites in order to identify changes in the response pattern which might be caused by atmospheric concentrations of air pollutants and could lead to the phenomenon of decline. Transpiration was measured as water flow through the hydroactive xylem using an equilibrium mass-flow measurement system. Total tree transpiration was monitored diurnally, from July 1985 until October 1985 at both sites. The relationship between transpiration and meteorological measurements indicated that transpiration was a linear function of the vapor pressure deficit. No differences in transpiration of green trees were observed between the two sites. Canopy transpiration was 57%–68% of total throughfall and 41%–54% of total rainfall. Due to this positive water balance, soil water potential at 10 and 20 cm depths remained close to-0.02 MPa (max.-0.09 MPa) for most of the summer. Soil water potential was correlated with the difference between the weekly precipitation and transpiration. No differences in the water relations of apparently healthy trees in the two P. abies stands were observed. It is concluded that differences between green trees at the two sites in terms of nutrient relations or growth rate cannot be explained by changes in whole-tree transpiration or soil water status.  相似文献

SUMMARY Santalales comprise mainly parasitic plants including mistletoes and sandalwoods. Bitegmic ovules similar to those found in most other angiosperms are seen in many members of the order, but other members exhibit evolutionary reductions to the unitegmic and ategmic conditions. In some mistletoes, extreme reduction has resulted in the absence of emergent ovules such that embryo sacs appear to remain embedded in placental tissues. Three santalalean representatives (Comandra, Santalum, and Phoradendron), displaying unitegmic, and ategmic ovules, were studied. Observed ovule morphologies were consistent with published reports, including Phoradendron serotinum, which we interpret as having reduced ategmic ovules, consistent with earlier reports on this species. For further understanding of the nature of the ovule reductions we isolated orthologs of the Arabidopsis genes AINTEGUMENTA (ANT) and BELL1 (BEL1), which are associated with ovule development in this species. We observed ovular expression of ANT and BEL1 in patterns largely resembling those seen in the integumented ovules of Arabidopsis. These genes were found to be expressed in the integument of unitegmic ovules and in the surface layers of ategmic ovules, and in some cases, expression of BEL1 was also observed in the surrounding carpel tissue. We hypothesize that ategmic ovules derive from a fusion of the integuments with the nucellus or that the nucellus has taken on some of the characteristics confined to integuments in ancestral species.  相似文献

Calcium was localized in ovules of Plumbago zeylanica from 1 day before anthesis to 3 days after anthesis using potassium antimonate and transmission electron microscopy in pollinated and emasculated flowers. At 1 day before anthesis, embryo sacs (containing an egg cell, a central cell and zero to three accessory cells) appear mature and contain abundant calcium precipitates (ppts), in contrast to nucellar cells. At anthesis, the vacuoles of nucellar cells have enlarged, and micropylar cells, in particular, are heavily labeled with calcium ppts. As pollen tubes elongate through ovular tissues, ppts diminish in ovular cells and become concentrated in the pollen tube cell wall. After fertilization, the calcium ppts sharply diminish in fertilized ovules; in unfertilized ovules, calcium ppts remain abundant up to 3 days after anthesis (when unfertilized ovules are shed). The distribution of calcium in the ovule changes in apparent response to fertilization, suggesting that calcium content may be related to the attraction and receipt of the pollen tube. In contrast with conventionally-organized embryo sacs with synergids, Plumbago accumulates calcium in the egg cell. Received: 30 December 1999 / Revision accepted: 24 March 2000  相似文献

A survey of species of the prunoid genera, Maddenia and Pygeum, and of the genus Osmaronia has been made. The ovules of all are pendent, campylotropous, and epitropic. In the prunoids, the ovular supply is intimately connected with a central vascular plexus in the base of the carpel; that plexus is absent from Osmaronia. The prunoid carpels are marked by an extensive degree of fusion among the ovular and wing bundles, by fusion of the sutural margins, by fusion of the 2 integuments of the ovule to a single massive one, and by the presence of 3 or 5 well-developed bundles in the base. The carpel of Osmaronia also has a strongly fused bipartite ovular supply, separate bundles of which, however, become very much attenuated before reaching the funiculus; it has independent ovular and wing bundles, completely separate carpellary margins, 2 clearly separate integuments in the ovule, and 6 distinctive bundles in the carpel base. At the funiculus, the wing bundle of Osmaronia is connected with the adjoining weak ovular bundle by a well-developed vascular branch. Various particularities in the morphology of Osmaronia lend support to its segregation into a unique tribe, the Osmaronieae of Rydberg.  相似文献

Mature apricot (Prunus armeniaca L. cv. Búlida) trees, growing under field conditions, were submitted to two drip irrigation treatments: a control (T1), irrigated to 100 % of seasonal crop evapotranspiration (ETc), and a continuous deficit (T2), irrigated to 50 % of the control throughout the year. The behaviour of leaf water potential and its components, leaf conductance and net photosynthesis were studied at three different times during the growing season, when they revealed a diurnal and seasonal pattern in response to water stress, evaporative demand of the atmosphere and leaf age. The deficit-irrigated trees showed, among other effects, a pronounced decrease in leaf water potential (ψw), decreased in leaf conductance (gs) and no osmotic adjustment. For this reason, gl and ψw can be considered good indicators of mature apricot tree water status and can therefore be used for irrigation scheduling.  相似文献

Summary The relative hydraulic conductivity (k) of xylem and resistance (R) to water flow through trunk, primary roots and branches in Picea abies trees growing under contrasting light conditions were investigated. The xylem permeability to water was measured by forcing 10 mM water solution of KC1 through excised wood specimens. From the values of k, the sapwood transverse area and the length of conducting segments, R of the whole trunk, branches and roots was calculated. The relative conductivity of xylem in open-grown trees exceeded that of shade-grown trees by 1.4–3.1 times, while k was closely correlated with the hydraulically effective radius (R e) of the largest tracheids (R 2 was 0.85–0.94 for open- and 0.51–0.79 for shade-grown trees). Because of both a low k and a smaller sapwood area in shade-grown trees the resistance to water movement through their trunk, roots and branches was many times higher. The distribution of R between single segments of the water-conducting pathway differed considerably in trees from different sites. At high water status the largest share of the total resistance in open- as well as shade-grown trees resides in the apical part of the trunk. The contribution of the branches to total xylem resistance is supposed to increase with developing water deficit.  相似文献

Summary Larch sawfly, Pristiphora erichsonii Hartig, and larch needlecast fungus, Mycosphaerella laricinia (R. Hartig) Neg., are early season defoliators restricted only to Larix host trees. Larch defoliation (100%) by either the fungus or insect, but not mechanical removal, induced systemic responses that reduced sawfly consumption and digestion rates one year later. In a feeding behavior assay, larvae quickly abandoned seedlings previously defoliated by M. laricinia. Adult female oviposition choice and egg deposition were unaffected. Seedling growth was not affected during the year of defoliation by M. laricinia, but was significantly reduced one year later. Defoliation by M. laricinia reduced stem volume, radial growth, root biomass and new shoot production. The latter tissue is the only oviposition resource for larch sawfly, and, in contrast, is not influenced by sawfly feeding. We hypothesize that M. laricinia infection may limit larch sawfly populations where both species coexist. However, this reduction is at a substantial net cost to larch productivity.  相似文献
