Acoustic signals can encode crucial information about species identity and individual quality. We recorded and compared male courtship drum sounds of the sand goby Pomatoschistus minutus and the painted goby P. pictus and examined if they can function in species recognition within sympatric populations. We also examined which acoustic features are related to male quality and the factors that affect female courtship in the sand goby, to determine whether vocalisations potentially play a role in mate assessment. Drums produced by the painted goby showed significantly higher dominant frequencies, higher sound pulse repetition rates and longer intervals between sounds than those of the sand goby. In the sand goby, male quality was predicted by visual and acoustic courtship signals. Regression analyses showed that sound amplitude was a good predictor of male length, whereas the duration of nest behaviour and active calling rate (i.e. excluding silent periods) were good predictors of male condition factor and fat reserves respectively. In addition, the level of female courtship was predicted by male nest behaviour. The results suggest that the frequency and temporal patterns of sounds can encode species identity, whereas sound amplitude and calling activity reflects male size and fat reserves. Visual courtship duration (nest-related behaviour) also seems relevant to mate choice, since it reflects male condition and is related to female courtship. Our work suggests that acoustic communication can contribute to mate choice in the sand goby group, and invites further study.  相似文献

果蝇nasuta亚群由14个种、亚种和分类群组成,广泛分布于印度-太平洋区域。本文首次记录了nasuta亚群种的求爱歌,测量了脉冲歌时域模式的参数:脉冲串间隔(IBI)、脉冲间隔(IPI)、脉冲串时间长度(PTL)、每个脉冲串的脉冲数(PN)、脉冲时间长度(PL)、波动周期时间长度(CL)。采用计算机声谱分析技术,作出求爱歌信号的三维数字功率谱图,进行频率分析。发现D.pulauna和Taxon-F不发出求爱歌声信号,视觉在交配中可能起重要作用。对其余种、亚种和分类群的求爱歌分析表明,nasuta亚群种的求爱歌分为脉冲歌和正弦歌。对部分种的正反交F1求爱歌分析表明,脉冲歌时域参数,如IPI平均值为X染色体连锁或常染色体多基因控制,正弦歌频率偏向母方。根据不同种、亚种和分类群脉冲歌的时域模式构建nasuta亚群的系统树,对亚群中不同种、亚种和分类群的亲缘关系进行讨论。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper a detailed analysis of the physical structure of sounds produced by male Padogobius martensi is reported. Sound production occurs during courtship and inter-male agonistic encounters. Both aggressive and courtship calls are made up of rapidly repeated pulses, with a pulse repetition rate decreasing through the course of the emission. By means of computerized analysis, the pulse repetition rate, its modulation and sound duration were determined. The water temperature was found to exert a marked and significant effect on the above parameters. In particular, the temperature directly affects the pulse rate and its decrease through the course of the emission (i.e. frequency modulation) and inversely affects sound duration. By contrast, size of the calling animal does not significantly influence the sound parameters considered. Aggressive sounds last longer and have a lower pulse repetition rate than the courtship sounds. Moreover, aggressive sounds appear more variable than the courtship ones as far as pulse rate and duration are concerned.  相似文献

The courtship behavior and the effects of courtship song in inter- and intraspecific crosses were studied in the four sympatric species of the Drosophila auraria complex: D. auraria, D. biauraria, D. subauraria, and D. triauraria. Orientation, tapping, and vibration (the repertoires of male courtship) were observed in both inter- and intraspecific crosses, suggesting that signals from heterospecific females were enough to elicit such male behaviors. The crossability tests with wingless or winged heterospecific males (tests for wing effects) revealed that winged heterospecific males copulated less than wingless ones in all four species but not all the pairwise cases. Since the crossability tests with aristaless females (deaf) or normal females showed essentially the same results as the tests for wing effects, we concluded that the sound produced by wing vibration plays an important role and that the wing movement itself is less important. These findings suggest that courtship songs are of great importance in mate discrimination and the sexual isolation between the species of this complex.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Male gobies of the genus Bathygobius are soniferous during courtship. The mechanism by which the sounds are produced is, however, unknown. Early studies on sound production by males of B. soporator suggested that these sounds are hydrodynamic in nature, being produced by the forcible ejection of water through the gill opening. The mechanism of sound production by the closely related species B. curacao was investigated and three lines of evidence are presented which support the hydrodynamic hypothesis. First, similarities between the sounds produced by courting males and by ejecting water through a pipette demonstrated that hydrodynamic forces can readily produce such sounds. Second, the behavioural motor patterns occurring during sound production are consistent with the hypothesis that water is being ejected through the gill openings. Finally, morphological examination revealed an apparent lack of specialised features associated with sound production, effectively eliminating stridulatory and swim bladder mechanisms. These results represent the strongest evidence to date in support of any proposed mechanism of sound production in the gobiids.  相似文献

Euchaetes egle Drury andE. bolteri Stretch produce ultrasound using paired thoracic tymbal organs in both defensive and sexual contexts. The defensive ultrasound produced in response to tactile stimulation is fully characterized. The sounds are sexually monomorphic and species specific in the number of sound pulses produced during each flexion and relaxation of the tymbal, peak frequency, peak intensity, and duration of the interval between flexion and relaxation. Ultrasonic signals play a role in the courtship of both species. Males produce ultrasound just prior to contact with females, and it is shown to be important to courtship success inE. egle. Ultrasonic courtship communication is mapped on a recently proposed cladogram for the family Arctiidae. Background

Sound production is widespread among fishes and accompanies many social interactions. The literature reports twenty-nine cichlid species known to produce sounds during aggressive and courtship displays, but the precise range in behavioural contexts is unclear. This study aims to describe the various Oreochromis niloticus behaviours that are associated with sound production in order to delimit the role of sound during different activities, including agonistic behaviours, pit activities, and reproduction and parental care by males and females of the species.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Sounds mostly occur during the day. The sounds recorded during this study accompany previously known behaviours, and no particular behaviour is systematically associated with sound production. Males and females make sounds during territorial defence but not during courtship and mating. Sounds support visual behaviours but are not used alone. During agonistic interactions, a calling Oreochromis niloticus does not bite after producing sounds, and more sounds are produced in defence of territory than for dominating individuals. Females produce sounds to defend eggs but not larvae.

Conclusion/Significance

Sounds are produced to reinforce visual behaviours. Moreover, comparisons with O. mossambicus indicate two sister species can differ in their use of sound, their acoustic characteristics, and the function of sound production. These findings support the role of sounds in differentiating species and promoting speciation. They also make clear that the association of sounds with specific life-cycle roles cannot be generalized to the entire taxa.  相似文献

Two freshwater gobies Padogobius martensii and Gobius nigricans live in shallow (5-70 cm) stony streams, and males of both species produce courtship sounds. A previous study demonstrated high noise levels near waterfalls, a quiet window in the noise around 100 Hz at noisy locations, and extremely short-range propagation of noise and goby signals. To investigate the relationship of this acoustic environment to communication, we determined audiograms for both species and measured parameters of courtship sounds produced in the streams. We also deflated the swimbladder in P. martensii to determine its effect on frequency utilization in sound production and hearing. Both species are maximally sensitive at 100 Hz and produce low-frequency sounds with main energy from 70 to 100-150 Hz. Swimbladder deflation does not affect auditory threshold or dominant frequency of courtship sounds and has no or minor effects on sound amplitude. Therefore, both species utilize frequencies for hearing and sound production that fall within the low-frequency quiet region, and the equivalent relationship between auditory sensitivity and maximum ambient noise levels in both species further suggests that ambient noise shapes hearing sensitivity.  相似文献

The role of sound production of the Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus in agonistic and mating interactions observed during hierarchy formation and in established groups was examined. Only territorial males produced sounds, during male–female and male–male courtship interactions and during pit-related activities ( e.g. dig, hover and still in the nest). Sound production rate was positively correlated with courting rate. Although sounds in other cichlids are typically emitted in early stages of courtship, O. mossambicus produced sounds in all phases, but especially during late stages of courtship, including spawning. It is suggested that the acoustic emissions in this species may play a role in advertising the presence and spawning readiness of males and in synchronizing gamete release.  相似文献

Male Codoma ornata produce sounds associated with aggression and spawning activities during the breeding season. Females do not produce sounds. Males most often produced sounds associated with escalated displays of aggression, courtship and the spawning act. C. ornata spawn in crevices, but previously were reported to spawn as egg-clusterers in cavities. Structurally, sounds are low frequency, vary in duration according to context and are not harmonic. In this study, the reproductive behavior of Economidichthys pygmaeus was investigated under laboratory conditions with simultaneous video and acoustic recordings. Males of the freshwater goby E. pygmaeus do not produce sounds either during the courtship/spawning phase or during aggressive interactions. A detailed analysis of the behavioral sequences revealed the absence of any digging and nest-building activities, whereas the other behavioral components of courtship and spawning are similar to those described for other goby species, showing also a similar function. Results were discussed in terms of secondary loss of sound production within the sand gobies, a group of highly soniferous fishes in the family Gobiidae.  相似文献

Birds use a variety of sounds in their courtship displays, but the majority of behavioural studies have focused on vocalizations. In contrast, little is known about how non‐vocal sounds, or sonations, are used, even though many avian species produce them. The ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) is a useful species to examine non‐vocal sounds because they lack vocal components in their courtship and rely on a non‐vocal sound to attract mates and defend their territory. Their courtship display, known as “drumming,” is created by the wings, and the number of pulses and speed (pulse rate) varies significantly among males. Anecdotal evidence suggested that males can affect the drumming behaviour of neighbouring males in drumming “duels” in an analogous way to song contests. Here, we test whether males do respond to the playback of drumming sounds of an unfamiliar male. Using a portable speaker system, we played recordings of drumming displays to males that were actively drumming themselves. Throughout each playback, we recorded the drumming behaviour of target males so that we could assess whether drumming activity changes following a playback as well as whether males change the speed of their display. Overall, male grouse were equally likely to approach the speaker or continue drumming following a playback. For those males that continued drumming, their drumming pulse rate was significantly faster following playbacks, but they drummed less often. These results indicate that male ruffed grouse do respond to drumming sounds, but the specific response differs among males. Because the differential response was not related to colour phase or whether a male was drumming in proximity to other males, we suggest that the response of individuals likely varies with other traits, such as hormone levels or behavioural syndrome.  相似文献

Male courtship acoustic signals from five Lake Malawi cichlid fish species of the Pseudotropheus zebra complex were recorded and compared. Sounds made by males of P. zebra , Pseudotropheus callainos and the undescribed species known as Pseudotropheus 'zebra gold' from Nkhata Bay, and Pseudotropheus emmiltos and Pseudotropheus faizilberi from Mphanga Rocks, differed significantly in the number of pulses and in pulse period. The largest differences in acoustic variables were found among the sympatric Mphanga Rocks species that, in contrast to the other three species, show relatively minor differences in male colour and pattern. These findings suggest that interspecific mate recognition is mediated by multimodal signals and that the mass of different sensory channels varies among sympatric species groups. This study also showed that sound peak frequency was significantly negatively correlated with male size and that sound production rate increased significantly with courtship rate.  相似文献

Vocalizations have been elucidated in previous songbird studies, whereas less attention has been paid to non-vocal sounds. In the blue-capped cordon-bleu (Uraeginthus cyanocephalus), both sexes perform courtship displays that are accompanied by singing and distinct body movements (i.e. dance). Our previous study revealed that their courtship bobbing includes multiple rapid steps. This behaviour is quite similar to human tap dancing, because it can function as both visual and acoustic signals. To examine the acoustic signal value of such steps, we tested if their high-speed step movements produce non-vocal sounds that have amplitudes similar to vocal sounds. We found that step behaviour affected step sound amplitude. Additionally, the dancing step sounds were substantially louder than feet movement sounds in a non-courtship context, and the amplitude range overlapped with that of song notes. These results support the idea that in addition to song cordon-bleus produce acoustic signals with their feet.  相似文献

When they are disturbed, soldiers of the two termite species Pseudacanthotermes spiniger and P. militaris hit the substratum with their head, thereby producing sounds. High-speed video recordings allowed us to analyze the movement. The sound emissions were recorded and their temporal structure was analyzed. Artificial stimulation proved that head-banging acts as an alarm signal transmitted through the vibrations produced in the substratum. Perception of these vibrations induced a polyethic response. Workers reacted to head-banging by escaping. Minor soldiers reacted by escaping, becoming immobile, or head-banging, thereby indicating the existence of positive feedback in signal production. Differences in the time patterns of the drumming appeared between both species but could not be shown to play a role in species recognition.  相似文献

In captive adult Zambian mole-rats 14 different sounds (13 true vocalizations) have been recorded during different behavioural contexts. The sound analysis revealed that all sounds occurred in a low and middle frequency range with main energy below 10 kHz. The majority of calls contained components of 1.6–2 kHz, 0.63–0.8 kHz, and/or 5–6.3 kHz. The vocalization range thus matched well the hearing range as established in other studies. The frequency content of courtship calls in two species of Zambian Cryptomys was compared with that in naked mole-rats (Heterocephalus glaber) and blind mole-rats (Spalax ehrenbergi) as described in the literature. The frequency range of maximum sound energy is negatively correlated with the body weight and coincides with the frequencies of best hearing in the respective species. In general, the vocalization range in subterranean mammals is shifted towards low frequencies which are best propagated in underground burrows. Accepted: 16 September 1996  相似文献

Two species of the genus Sinipta, S. dalmani and S. hectorisperonii, exist in Uruguay, the latter reported here for the first time. Both species have quite similar morphological features and can only be distinguished by slight details, which have led to misidentifications in the past. Specimens from both taxa were studied in order to detect suitable characters to distinguish them and to clarify their taxonomic status, by integrating previously unstudied morphological, biological and molecular characteristics. Detailed structures of the stridulatory file of both sexes were studied and described for the first time, and the sounds produced by both species were studied and described on the basis of recordings made in captivity with an analog recorder. The signal was digitized and analyzed using Avisoft software. Three different types of sound were described for both species: calling song, courtship song and disturbance song. Oscillograms and frequency spectra were provided, and the physical characteristics of the sounds of interest for species identification were established. Finally, molecular studies showed that the two taxa are reciprocally monophyletic groups. The combined results of the analyses suggest that the two studied taxa are distinct species, and point to features suitable for their identification.  相似文献
