Anthropogenic activity, such as conversion and degradation of habitats, is causing global biodiversity declines. However, our understanding of how local ecological communities are responding to these changes taxonomically and functionally is still limited. The effects of the replacement of native by introduced pastures on biodiversity are some of those examples with limited understanding. Here, we sampled dung beetles in native and introduced pastures using standardised sampling protocols during the dry and rainy seasons in the Brazilian Pantanal. We used multifaceted β-diversity partitioning of taxonomy-, abundance- and trait-based approaches to evaluate spatial (i.e. between pasture types) and temporal (i.e. between seasons) patterns of dung beetle changes in composition, abundance and species traits. Spatially, we found no effects of pasture type, season and their interaction on taxonomy-based β-diversity and its components. For abundance-based β-diversity and its components, pasture type had effects on both Bray-Curtis dissimilarity and balanced variation in abundance. Higher values of both metrics were found in native pastures. For functional-based β-diversity, Sorensen dissimilarity with higher values in the dry season, while pasture type also had an effect on functional nestedness, where higher values of functional nestedness were found in introduced pastures. Seasonally, we also found no effects of pasture type, season and their interaction on taxonomy-based β-diversity and its components. However, pasture type had effects on Bray-Curtis dissimilarity, with higher values found in introduced pastures. No effects on balanced variation in abundance and abundance gradients were found. Pasture type influenced the functional turnover, but not functional dissimilarity or nestedness. Higher values of functional turnover were found in native pastures. In summary, we demonstrate that the type of pastures and climatic seasonality have effects on abundance- and functional- but not on taxonomy-based β-diversity patterns of dung beetles in the Brazilian Pantanal.  相似文献

Small soda lakes represent one of the most vulnerable ecosystem types due to their high hydrological sensitivity to climate change and anthropogenic interventions. Since diatoms are excellent bioindicators, determining the β-diversity and the structuring dynamics of diatom metacommunities can provide valuable information for conservation planning for soda pans. In this study, two diatom metacommunities were surveyed monthly during a one-year period from distinct regions of the Carpathian basin: the Fert?-Hanság National Park (FH) between 2013 and 2014, and the Danube-Tisza Interfluve (DT) between 2014 and 2015. We explored whether β-diversity of diatom assemblages in the two regions is enhanced by species turnover or nestedness (related to richness differences) and investigated the role of deterministic and stochastic processes in shaping β-diversity patterns. Furthermore, we evaluated the contribution of environmental variables, geographic distance and temporal variation to community structure. High β-diversity (>90%) was revealed for both metacommunities, and was maintained primarily by species turnover. Within the metacommunity of the DT where the natural hydrological cycle of soda pans is not disturbed, diatom communities assembled mainly due to the selection force of environment at a spatiotemporal scale. In the soda pans located in the habitat reconstruction area of the FH, besides species-sorting, significant temporal variation in community structure appeared as a result of water management and periodic water supply. Our results point to the need for a conservation management strategy which maintains the natural hydrological regime of small saline lakes, and therefore their habitat heterogeneity which is of high conservation value.  相似文献

Biodiversity is believed to be low in regions with vegetation that has adapted to water stress. Additionally, there is little interest by authorities in establishing and expanding conservation units in these areas. In Brazil, the Caatinga and the Cerrado biomes comprise this xerophilous vegetation. In both, climate is tropical and the dry season is long and well-defined. The Caatinga is the Brazilian biome with the smallest area protected by conservation units. This study evaluates the efficacy of conservation units in the Caatinga biome based on abundance and richness of drosophilids. Flies were collected inside and outside these areas. In total, approximately 23,000 flies of 32 species were collected in six conservation and six non-conservation sites. Two non-described species occurred exclusively inside protected areas, underlining the importance of conservation efforts in the maintenance of biodiversity. Other species were recorded exclusively outside conservation areas, which emphasizes the importance of establishing and expanding conservation units in the Caatinga. Native species were significantly more abundant inside conservation units, though the richness was similar in protected and non-protected areas. Abundance of exotic species outside conservation areas was statistically different in comparison with that of native ones.  相似文献

The turnover of community composition across space, β-diversity, is influenced by different assembly mechanisms, which place varying weight on local habitat factors, such as environmental conditions and species interactions, and regional factors such as dispersal and history. Several assembly mechanisms may function simultaneously; however, little is known about how their importance changes over time and why. Here, we implemented a field survey where we sampled a bacterial metacommunity consisting of 17 rock pools located at the Swedish Baltic Sea coast at 11 occasions during 1 year. We determined to which extent communities were structured by different assembly mechanisms using variation partitioning and studied changes in β-diversity across environmental gradients over time. β-Diversity was highest at times of high overall productivity and environmental heterogeneity in the metacommunity, at least partly due to species sorting, that is, selection of taxa by the prevailing environmental conditions. In contrast, dispersal-driven assembly mechanisms were primarily detected at times when β-diversity was relatively low. There were no indications for strong and persistent differences in community composition or β-diversity between permanent and temporary pools, indicating that the physical disturbance regime is of relatively minor importance. In summary, our study clearly suggests that there are temporal differences in the relative importance of different assembly mechanisms related to abiotic factors and shows that the temporal variability of those factors is important for a more complete understanding of bacterial metacommunity dynamics.  相似文献

Samples of fishes were collected quarterly at three reaches in the Água Nanci stream, upper Paraná River basin, Brazil: near the spring, in the middle course, and near the mouth. Richness and evenness of the fish fauna increased between reaches towards the river mouth showing a correlation with stream width, pH and the presence of riparian vegetation. These variations in species richness and evenness, verified through Principal Component Analysis and Pearson correlation, suggest relations to habitat complexity, especially characterized by both the degree of preservation of dense riparian vegetation and high width at the lower reaches of the stream, providing a wide variety of hiding places for fish. Abundant species showed correlations with some environmental factors, suggesting habitat preferences.  相似文献

Summary The peroxidase-antiperoxidase immunocytochemical technique was used to identify the ACTH/endorphin cells in the porcine pituitary at the ultrastructural level and to determine the precise subcellular localization of the pro-ACTH/endorphin fragments. The cells display different aspects: 1) large, regular shapes with numerous and large secretory granules; 2) small, irregular and angular shapes with small granules aligned along the periphery of the cell; and 3) intermediate forms. The presence of and -endorphin not only in the same cells but also in the same secretory granules that contain ACTH and -LPH clearly indicates that both the precursor or its fragments and the abovementioned peptides are stored in the same granules and released simultaneously by the corticotropic cells. The presence of FSH in some corticotropic cells is also discussed.Abbreviations used in this Article ACTH corticotropin - -MSH -melanotropin (ACTH I–I3) - CLIP corticotropin-like intermediate lobe peptide (ACTH 18–39) - -LPH -lipotropin - -MSH -melanotropin (-LPH 41–58); -endorphin (-LPH 61–91); -endorphin (-LPH 61–76)  相似文献

Beta diversity(β-diversity) is the scalar between local(α) and regional(γ) diversity.Understanding geographic patterns of β-diversity is central to ecology, biogeography, and conservation biology.A full understanding of the origin and maintenance of geographic patterns of β-diversity requires exploring both taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity,as well as their respective turnover and nestedness components, and exploring phylogenetic p-diversity at different evolutionary depths. In this study,we ex...  相似文献

For many taxonomic groups, sparse information on the spatial distribution of biodiversity limits our capacity to answer a variety of theoretical and applied ecological questions. Modelling community-level attributes (α- and β-diversity) over space can help overcome this shortfall in our knowledge, yet individually, predictions of α- or β-diversity have their limitations. In this study, we present a novel approach to combining models of α- and β-diversity, with sparse survey data, to predict the community composition for all sites in a region. We applied our new approach to predict land snail community composition across New Zealand. As we demonstrate, these predictions of metacommunity composition have diverse potential applications, including predicting γ-diversity for any set of sites, identifying target areas for conservation reserves, locating priority areas for future ecological surveys, generating realistic compositional data for metacommunity models and simultaneously predicting the distribution of all species in a taxon consistent with known community diversity patterns.  相似文献

A natural vegetation area, with 1269 ha, composed mainly by cerrado, located at Santa Rita do Passa Quatro Municipality, S?o Paulo State, southeastern Brazil (21 degrees 36-39'S, 47 degrees 36-38'W), was studied. From September 1995 to February 1997, a floristic survey was carried out, when all vascular plant species at reproductive stage were collected. The flowering and fruiting patterns of the community were studied, comparing the herbaceous and the woody species. In the herbaceous component, 239 species were found and, in the woody one, 108 species. The woody species flowered mainly at the beginning of the rainy season, while the herbaceous ones produced flowers generally at the end of that season. The proportion of anemo and autochorous species was greater in the herbaceous component. The zoochorous ones, on the contrary, were more frequent in the woody component. At the dry season, when their dispersion is more efficient, the proportion of anemo and autochorous species producing fruits was higher. During the rainy season, when their fruits become attractive for longer time, the zoochorous species fruited more intensely.  相似文献

Glycosylation is one of the most important post-translational modifications and it is clear that the single step of -1,4-galactosylation is performed by a family of -1,4-galactosyltransferases (4-GalTs) and that each member of this family may play a distinct role in different tissues and cells. In this study, we characterized the gene expression of six 4-GalTs in mouse testis and analyzed the changes of galactosylation of testis glycoproteins during postnatal development. Northern blot analysis revealed that 4-GalT-I and 4-GalT-IV were expressed mainly in newborn mouse testis and that the expression of 4-GalT-II increased markedly and persisted at the highest levels in adult mouse testis. The expression of 4-GalT-III and 4-GalT-V, however, remained relatively at low levels during mouse testicular development. In contrast, the expression of 4-GalT-VI was undetectable in mouse testis. The gene expression of 4-GalT-II in mouse testis was further analyzed by in situ hybridization due to its unique expression pattern. Strong hybridization signals were detected in the seminiferous tubules and the expression varied among the different stages of spermatogenic differentiation. The distinct gene expression patterns of 4-GalTs in mouse testis could affect the differential galactosylation of testis glycoproteins, as revealed by lectin histochemistry analysis.  相似文献

Litterfall consumption and predation on propagules is high in Indo-west-Pacific mangroves and low in Atlantic-east-Pacific ones. However, data for the latter area comes only from Caribbean and subtropical North American mangroves. South American data on litterfall consumption contradicts this view but data on predation on propagules are scarce. We measured predation on Rhizophora mangle, Avicennia schaueriana and Laguncularia racemosa propagules and seedlings and related to densities of large (>1.5 m high) and small (1–1.5 m) plants in mature and regenerating mangroves in Ceará state, Brazil. Predation on propagules was the highest among American mangroves (R. mange, >47%; A. schaueriana, >97%; L. racemosa, >83%), especially in the regenerating area. Predation on seedlings was low (maximum of 14% for R. mangle) and did not hamper growth. The dominance of large R. mangle trees in the mature mangrove is consistent with the lower predation on its propagules but the high proportions of small plants of other species indicate that dominance is achieved by mechanisms other than predation. In the regenerating mangrove, dominance of large and small L. racemosa and A. schaueriana plants is not consistent with the high predation on their propagules. Therefore, predation is not the main determinant of the species composition in this mangrove system.  相似文献

Concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and prolactin (PRL) were measured in jugular blood and those of oestradiol-17β (E217β) in utero-ovarian blood. Samples were taken from five intact gilts every 15 min for 108 h starting between day 15 and day 18 of the oestrous cycle. In the late luteal/early follicular phase, high pulsatile LH secretion, close to one pulse per hour, was observed. This could be the stimulus necessary for the final maturation of the ovarian follicles.Thereafter, frequency and amplitude of pulses, and the baseline value, decreased and were low at least between 36 and 12 h before the preovulatory LH surge. PRL and FSH concentrations also declined. This was probably due to the increase of oestrogen secretion. As E217β concentrations were still high, the surge of LH which was accompanied by increase in FSH and PRL, occurred for approximately 13 to 20 h. While LH and PRL mean levels decreased, FSH concentrations continued to increase. Peaks of PRL were observed during the late luteal/early follicular phase and during the LH discharge. During the period of estrus, each exposure to the boar was immediately followed by one of these peaks, which could play a role in the sexual behavior of the gilt.  相似文献

Understanding the influences of dispersal limitation and environmental filtering on the structure of ecological communities is a major challenge in ecology. Insight may be gained by combining phylogenetic, functional and taxonomic data to characterize spatial turnover in community structure (β-diversity). We develop a framework that allows rigorous inference of the strengths of dispersal limitation and environmental filtering by combining these three types of β-diversity. Our framework provides model-generated expectations for patterns of taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional β-diversity across biologically relevant combinations of dispersal limitation and environmental filtering. After developing the framework we compared the model-generated expectations to the commonly used "intuitive" expectation that the variance explained by the environment or by space will, respectively, increase monotonically with the strength of environmental filtering or dispersal limitation. The model-generated expectations strongly departed from these intuitive expectations: the variance explained by the environment or by space was often a unimodal function of the strength of environmental filtering or dispersal limitation, respectively. Therefore, although it is commonly done in the literature, one cannot assume that the strength of an underlying process is a monotonic function of explained variance. To infer the strength of underlying processes, one must instead compare explained variances to model-generated expectations. Our framework provides these expectations. We show that by combining the three types of β-diversity with model-generated expectations our framework is able to provide rigorous inferences of the relative and absolute strengths of dispersal limitation and environmental filtering. Phylogenetic, functional and taxonomic β-diversity can therefore be used simultaneously to infer processes by comparing their empirical patterns to the expectations generated by frameworks similar to the one developed here.  相似文献
