The bony falx (BF) and bony tentorium (BT) of spotted dolphins ( Stenella attenuata ) at different growth stages were observed. The BF and BT were observed to have the shape of the entire falx cerebri (FC) and tentorium cerebelli (TC), respectively, in adults, but were not seen in fetuses at all. Partially formed BF and BT were observed in the young. The BF and BT of spotted dolphins are formed by ossification in the FC and TC in the course of aging. Based on age determination by means of dentinal growth layers of the maxillary teeth, the ossification in the FC and TC of spotted dolphins begins by about 1 yr of age, and is completed, except for the passage of nerves and blood vessels, by about 9 yr of age. The BF and BT of spotted dolphins are formed possibly by continual dietary intake of large amounts of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D.  相似文献

The close relationships of pinnipeds to other carnivorans were studied based on morphological characteristics of the bony tentorium (BT) and bony falx (BF) of carnivorans. It appears to be an important characteristic of the Carnivora that the clear BT is present in almost all species including pinnipeds. The BF is present in all species of pinnipeds, and only in the genus Ursus among fissipeds observed.
The parietal bone of all otariids and odobenids observed shows an extremely characteristic form as compared with other carnivorans. The sagittal and squa-mous borders of the parietal bone of these groups are bridged by a thin bony plate which forms large portions of the BT and BF. In phocids, the aspects of the BT and BF vary among species, but are apparently distinct from those of otariids and odobenids.
The BT of carnivorans can be divided into four types which appear to be useful for classification of the Carnivora. On the basis of the BT and BF form, the Otariidae and Odobenidae appear to have a specific sister relationship to the Ursidae, while the Phocidae appears to have dose affinities to the Mustelidae. Morphological differences of the BT and BF among pinnipeds strongly support the diphyletic origin of pinnipeds.  相似文献

The influence of the falx and tentorium on brain injury biomechanics during impact was studied with finite element (FE) analysis. Three detailed 3D FE head models were created based on the images of a healthy, normal size head. Two of the models contained the addition of falx and tentorium with material properties from previously published experiments. Impact loadings from a reconstructed concussive case in a sport accident were applied to the two players involved. The results suggested that the falx and tentorium could induce large strains to the surrounding brain tissues, especially to the corpus callosum and brainstem. The tentorium seemed to constrain the motion of the cerebellum while inducing large strain in the brainstem in both players involved in the accident (one player had mainly coronal head rotation and the other had both coronal and transversal rotations). Since changed strain levels were observed in the brainstem and corpus callosum, which are classical sites for diffuse axonal injuries (DAI), we confirmed the importance of using accurate material properties for falx and tentorium in a FE head model when studying traumatic brain injuries.  相似文献

Fish protamines are highly specialized molecules which are responsible for chromatin condensation during the last stages of spermatogenesis (spermiogenesis). However, not all fish contain protamines in their sperm nuclei; rather, there seems to be a random distribution of protamines within this group. The origin of this sporadic presence of protamines in the sperm and its significance have not yet been precisely determined. In this paper we have conducted an exhaustive survey of the literature available on the different types of nuclear protein composition of the sperm of teleost fish in order to try to correlate these data with what is presently known about the taxonomy of this group. The results of this analysis have allowed us to make the following observations. The divergence between protamines and histones has occurred several times during the evolution of the bony fish. However, the relative frequency of this divergence is almost negligible during the differentiation of genera and species (intrafamily variation) and is very small during the differentiation of families (interfamily variation). Nevertheless, the divergence is very noticeable among the different orders. It is therefore possible to conclude from all this that the sporadic distribution of protamines in bony fish is not a random event as initially believed. Furthermore, such a heterogeneous distribution of protamines cannot be easily accounted for by a mechanism of horizontal retroviral transmission through repeated and independent acquisition of a prot amine gene as has been recently proposed (Jankowski, Stater, Dixon (1986) J Mol Evol 23:1–10). Rather, it could possibly be explained by a repeated and independent loss of the expression of the protamine gene (or loss of the gene itself) which mainly occurred during the diversification of the orders of this group.Correspondence to: J. Parelaphostrongylus tenuis was found in 79 (62.2%) of 127 white-tailed deer heads (Odocoileus virginianus) collected in New Hampshire. Prevalence of infection was higher in fawns and male deer, but older female deer (5.0 + years) had a higher intensity of infection (3.1) than any other age or sex class. Male deer in forest cover type 2 (northern hardwoods-hemlock-white pine) had a significantly greater prevalence of infection than the females in the same habitat (P less than .05). Adult females had a higher prevalence of infection (67.0%) than female fawns (20%) in forest cover type 1 (spruce-fir-northern hardwoods). In the craniums examined, P. tenuis was found most frequently in the tentorium cerebelli (23.6%) while the falx cerebri, the most prevalent site of infection in fawns, was a significantly less frequent site of infection in older deer (P less than .02). Male deer of age class 3.5 years had a significantly higher rate of infection in the dura mater-olfactory lobe than any other age or sex group (P less than .02). The cavernous sinus was the most frequent site of parasitism in male fawns (25.0%) and was the second most common location in all deer (13.4%).  相似文献

By means of silver nitrate impregnation and hematoxylin -- eosin staining the microcirculatory bed of the human brain dura mater (the second half of the mature age) has been investigated. Owing to the analysis of the morphometrical data of module organization of the hemomicrocirculatory bed, an objective quantitative characteristics of its peculiarities in various layers and areas of the dura mater is presented. In three layers of the dura mater in the fornix and skull basis area, falx cerebri and tentorium cerebelli venular links predominate. Most of all morphometrical parameters of the venular vessels increase in the internal layer of the dura mater in the skull basis area. Conditions of functioning for the human brain dura mater are reflected in its blood bed, its specificity manifesting at the microcirculatory level.  相似文献

Deformation of the human brain induced by mild angular head acceleration   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Deformation of the human brain was measured in tagged magnetic resonance images (MRI) obtained dynamically during angular acceleration of the head. This study was undertaken to provide quantitative experimental data to illuminate the mechanics of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Mild angular acceleration was imparted to the skull of a human volunteer inside an MR scanner, using a custom MR-compatible device to constrain motion. A grid of MR "tag" lines was applied to the MR images via spatial modulation of magnetization (SPAMM) in a fast gradient echo imaging sequence. Images of the moving brain were obtained dynamically by synchronizing the imaging process with the motion of the head. Deformation of the brain was characterized quantitatively via Lagrangian strain. Consistent patterns of radial-circumferential shear strain occur in the brain, similar to those observed in models of a viscoelastic gel cylinder subjected to angular acceleration. Strain fields in the brain, however, are clearly mediated by the effects of heterogeneity, divisions between regions of the brain (such as the central fissure and central sulcus) and the brain's tethering and suspension system, including the dura mater, falx cerebri, and tentorium membranes.  相似文献

Activity is an important behavioral trait that mediates a trade-offbetween obtaining food for growth and avoiding predation. Activeindividuals usually experience a higher encounter rate withfood items and suffer higher predation pressure than less activeindividuals. I investigated how activity of the damselfly Lestescongener is affected by larval state and predator presence andif larval behavioral type (BT) can be used to predict larvalboldness, foraging success, and adult BT. Activity level ofindividual larvae was studied without predator at 2 differentphysiological states (hungry and fed) and in 2 predator treatments:familiar predator cues and unfamiliar predator cues. Larvaedid not adjust their activity depending on state or when subjectedto unfamiliar predator cues, but a general reduction in activitywas seen in the familiar predator treatment. Hence, active individualsremained active compared with their conspecifics, independentof state or predator treatment. Active individuals were alsobolder and more efficient foragers than their less active conspecifics.Furthermore, both adult activity and boldness were correlatedwith larval BT. The results illustrate that BT of a larvae iscarried over many different situations keeping active larvaeactive even in maladaptive situations, demonstrating how a behavioralsyndrome may constrain behavioral plasticity. Furthermore, resultsshowed that behavioral syndromes can carry over from larvaethrough metamorphosis and dictate the BT of the adult.  相似文献

Parental care occurs in a diversity of fishes, but predominantly among freshwater groups. Among the approximately 422 families of bony fishes (Osteichthyes), 89 are presently known to exhibit parental care. Grouping these families into eight categories, based on the sex of the care-giver(s), reveals male parental care is as common or more common than female parental care. Although unusual among vertebrates, parental care by males alone is very common among bony fishes. Lists of families, the forms of parental care exhibited, the modes of fertilization, the environments in which reproduction occurs, and the sources of documentation are presented. Despite achievements in dolphin conservation for the tuna purse‐seine fishery of the eastern Pacific Ocean, debate continues about the magnitude and importance of dolphin mortality caused by small (unobserved) vessels. In‐port sampling of tuna catch size composition is a potentially cost‐effective means of identifying unobserved vessels that may be catching tunas associated with dolphins because yellowfin tuna caught in association with dolphins are larger, on average, than those caught in other types of purse‐seine sets. A classification algorithm to predict purse‐seine set type (“dolphin” vs. “nondolphin”) was built from port‐sampling data on yellowfin tuna length‐frequencies and the date and location of fishing of large (observed) vessels. This classification algorithm was used to screen the port‐sampling data of small vessels collected during 2006‐2009, assuming the fishing practices of the two groups resulted in similar catch characteristics. From these results, hypothetical time series of dolphin mortality for small vessels were constructed and incorporated into a population dynamics model, along with mortalities of large vessels. Results suggest that any dolphin mortality of small vessels is unlikely to be substantially affecting trends in dolphin abundance. These results underscore the importance of in‐port sampling, in combination with at‐sea observation and fishery‐independent surveys, to effective management.  相似文献

We report a progressive disruption of 24-h rhythms in fasting blood glucose (FBG), body temperature (BT) and heart rate (HR) associated with metabolic dysfunction and the development of prediabetes (PD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in overweight middle-aged (40–69 years old) humans. Increasing BT and HR mean values and declining 24-h BT and HR amplitudes accompany adverse changes in metabolic state. Increased nocturnal BT and a phase delay of the 24-h BT rhythm, deviant 24-h HR profile and a phase advance of the 24-h HR and FBG rhythms are early signs of the PD metabolic state. In T2DM, the 24-h FBG rhythm is no longer detectable, and the 24-h amplitudes of BT and HR are greatly diminished. In addition, lepton and creatinine values were lowered in T2DM. Moreover, positive correlations between FBG and body mass index, BMI, and negative correlations between the 24-h amplitude of FBG and BMI indicate that overweight is an additional factor causing disruption of the circadian rhythms. Further studies on circadian disruption as a consequence of metabolic dysfunction are necessary. The quantitative analysis of changing circadian BT and HR rhythms may provide prognostic markers of T2DM and therapeutic targets for its prevention and correction.  相似文献

Because the hand is a complex poly-articular limb, numerous methods have been proposed to investigate its kinematics therefore complicating the comparison between studies and the methodological choices. With the objective of overcoming such issues, the present study compared the effect of three local frame definitions on local axis orientations and joint angles of the fingers and the wrist. Three local frames were implemented for each segment. The “Reference” frames were aligned with global axes during a static neutral posture. The “Landmark” frames were computed using palpated bony landmarks. The “Functional” frames included a flexion–extension axis estimated during functional movements. These definitions were compared with regard to the deviations between obtained local segment axes and the evolution of joint (Cardan) angles during two test motions. Each definition resulted in specific local frame orientations with deviations of 15° in average for a given local axis. Interestingly, these deviations produced only slight differences (below 7°) regarding flexion–extension Cardan angles indicating that there is no preferred method when only interested in finger flexion–extension movements. In this case, the Reference method was the easiest to implement, but did not provide physiological results for the thumb. Using the Functional frames reduced the kinematic cross-talk on the secondary and tertiary Cardan angles by up to 20° indicating that the Functional definition is useful when investigating complex three-dimensional movements. Globally, the Landmark definition provides valuable results and, contrary to the other definitions, is applicable for finger deformities or compromised joint rotations.  相似文献

The dynamic response of the human head to side impact was studied by 2-dimensional finite element modeling. Three models were formulated in this study. Model I is an axisymmetric model. It simulated closed shell impact of the human head, and consisted of a single-layered spherical shell filled wiht an inviscid fluid. The other two models (Model II and III) are plane strain models of a coronal section of the human head. Model II approximated a 50th percentile male head by an outer layer to simulate cranial bone and an inviscid interior core to simulate the intracranial contents. The configuration of Model III is the same as Model II but more detailed anatomical features of the head interior were added, such as, cerebral spinal fluid (CSF); falx cerebri, dura, and tentorium. Linear elastic material properties were assigned to all three models. All three models were loaded by a triangular pulse with a peak pressure of 40 kPa, effectively producing a peak force of 1954 N (440 lb). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the membranes and that of the mechanical properties of the skull, brain, and membrane on the dynamic response of the brain during side impact, and to compare the pressure distributions from the plane strain model with the axisymmetric model. Very little is known about the acoustic repertoire of the Pacific humpback dolphin Sousa chinensis . This study, off eastern Australia, used concurrent observations of surface behaviour and acoustic recordings to gain an insight into the behavioural significance of humpback dolphin vocalizations. Humpback dolphins exhibit five different vocalization categories: broad band clicks; barks; quacks; grunts; and whistles. Broad band clicks were high in frequency (8 kHz to > 22 kHz), were directly related to foraging behaviour and may play a role in social behaviour. Barks and quacks were burst pulse sounds (frequency: 0.6 kHz to > 22 kHz, duration: 0.1–8 s) and were associated with both foraging and social behaviour. The grunt vocalization is a low frequency narrow band sound (frequency 0.5–2.6 kHz, duration 0.06–2 s) and was only heard during socializing. There were 17 different types of whistles, ranging widely in frequency (0.9–22 kHz) and vocal structure (n=329). The predominant whistle types used by the groups were type 1 (46%) and type 2 (17%). Most whistles were heard during both socializing and foraging. The number of whistles recorded in a group increased significantly as the number of mother–calf pairs increased, suggesting that whistles may be used as contact calls. Few vocalizations were heard during either travelling or milling behaviours. Broad band clicks, barks and whistle type 1 were the only vocalizations recorded during either travelling or milling.  相似文献

Cognitive enrichment aims to provide animals with opportunities to use their cognitive skills and to promote behaviors associated with positive wellbeing. Cooperation in mammals has been recorded during various behavioral contexts such as hunting, mating, playing, and parental care. Coordinated activity, often with some level of problem-solving action included, is required during cooperation. To investigate dolphins’ ability for collaborative problem-solving, an enrichment device was introduced to two adult male Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus). The device contained fish and ice and was designed to be opened by simultaneously pulling on both ends. After repeated presentation, it became apparent that only one dolphin had active interest in the device. To facilitate opportunities for problem-solving by this individual, an alternative collaborator, a human partner, was provided. Still, both dolphins had access to the device throughout the entire experiment. After the first opening, the same dolphin was highly successful in collaborating with the human in both joined (93%) and delayed (100%) partner conditions. The device provided a novel opportunity for the dolphin to use his cognitive skills. Even though only one dolphin participated actively, both dolphins showed varying degrees of interest to the device throughout the study. Both dolphins spent an average of 48% and 16% of their time, respectively, with the device, which resulted in a significant decrease in their other two most frequently observed behaviors: swimming and poolside observation. As a novel cognitive challenge, the device may be considered as a type of cognitive enrichment.  相似文献

Twenty-four hour patterns of body temperature (BT) were recorded during consecutive 3-10 day spans from 14 severely brain-damaged patients. Seven patients exhibited a normal circadian BT rhythm with an amplitude of more than 1°C and a normal phase position of the minimum BT being observed during the latter half of the nocturnal sleep. One patient with a dispersed type of sleep exhibited an extremely low amplitude of the BT rhythm with mean average 0.69°C. In this patient, an 24-hr observation span was insufficient to detect the existence of a BT rhythm. Two patients manifested disturbance of period. As acrophase of the BT rhythm varied from day to day, the standard deviation (S.D.) of mean acrophase wasextremely large. For these patients the light-dark cycle did not act as an entrainer because both had visual disturbance. A phase advance of the minimum BT was observed in four patients. The minimum BT appeared in the first half of nocturnal sleep. These three disturbances (amplitude, period and phase), were revealed only by longitudinal observation of the BT rhythm, indicating the importance of long-term observations over a sufficient period to make the nature of the rhythm disturbances clear. These disturbances were not related to that of the sleep-wake cycle, as two patients showed normal circadian BT rhythm in spite of their dispersed-type sleep.  相似文献

厦门海域的中华白海豚是一个受威胁的种群。以往有关该种群的调查范围主要集中在厦门以及邻近的南部漳州海域。为了获得厦门岛东部海域(包括晋江围头湾、小嶝岛以及大嶝岛部分水域)白海豚的分布和数量等信息,本文于2013年6—8月对该水域进行了船基样线法调查和照相识别研究。调查期间共目击到白海豚26群,照相识别白海豚个体27头。所有照相识别的白海豚个体均与厦门中华白海豚个体识别数据库中的个体匹配,表明厦门中华白海豚的分布区至少向东延伸至围头湾。本文白海豚遇见率为5.8群/100km和24.8头/100km,均要高于以往在厦门水域的调查结果,表明大嶝岛—围头湾水域是厦门中华白海豚的重要栖息地之一,值得优先保护和管理。  相似文献
