Surface electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF) were used to study the isometric muscular activity of the right versus the left upper trapezius muscles in 14 healthy right-handed women. The EMG activity was recorded simultaneously with force signals during a 10-15 s gradually increasing exertion of force, up to maximal force. Only one side at a time was tested. On both sides there was a significant increase in EMG amplitude (microV) during the gradually increasing force from 0% to 100% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The right trapezius muscle showed significantly less steep slopes for regression of EMG amplitude versus force at low force levels (0%-40% MVC) compared intra-individually with high force levels (60%-100% MVC). This was not found for the left trapezius muscle. At 40% MVC a significantly lower MPF value was found for the right trapezius muscle intra-individually compared with the left. An increase in MPF between 5% and 40% MVC was statistically significant when both sides were included in the test. The differences in EMG activity between the two sides at low force levels could be due to more slow-twitch (type I fibres) motor unit activity in the right trapezius muscles. It is suggested that this is related to right-handed activity.  相似文献

Muscle co-activation around the knee is important during ambulation and balance. The wide range of methodological approaches for the quantification of co-activation index (CI) makes comparisons across studies and populations difficult. The present study determined within- and between-session reliability of different methodological approaches for the quantification of the CI of the knee extensor and flexor muscles during maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs). Eight healthy volunteers participated in two repeated testing sessions. A series of knee extension MVICs of the dominant leg with concomitant torque and electromyographic (EMG) recordings were captured. CI was calculated utilizing different analytical approaches. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) showed that within-session measures displayed higher reliability (ICC > 0.861) and lower variability (Coefficient of variation; CV < 21.8%) than between-session measures (ICC < 0.645; CV > 24.2%). A selection of a 500 ms or larger window of RMS EMG activity around the PT delivered more reliable and less variable results than other approaches. Our findings suggest that the CI can provide a reliable measure for comparisons among conditions and is best utilized for within-session experimental designs.  相似文献

As an alternative to a conventional endurance electromyogram (EMG) test for assessment of muscle capacity in the upper trapezius muscle (isotonic test, IT), an isoelectric test (IE) has been investigated. Nine subjects performed the two endurance tests. The tests were performed with a straight horizontal arm in the plane of the scapula. In IE, EMG amplitude was fed back to the subject and the subject was instructed to maintain a constant EMG activity equal to the level with the arm unsupported. Subjective ratings of local fatigue were obtained during the experiments. The EMG recordings from both tests were analysed for the root mean square value as well as according to the mean power frequency (MPF) technique. All the subjects endured maximal 15 min IE while in IT the median endurance was 11.9 min. Average subjective ratings of perceived fatigue increased more in IT compared to IE. The average normalised MPF curve from IT increased while that from IE was unaffected. There was a significant difference between the MPF results at 6 and 8 min. It is noteworthy that the MPF was higher in IT in spite of a higher accumulated biomechanical load. It was concluded from these studies that the interpretation of decreased MPF as an indicator of increased local muscle fatigue is doubtful at low contraction levels. It is suggested that an IE is a more appropriate method for the functional evaluation of low threshold motor units of the upper trapezius muscle in research into occupational disorders. The human triceps surae (soleus, medial (MG) and lateral (LG) gastrocnemii) is complex and important for posture and gait. The soleus exhibits markedly lower motor unit firing rates (MUFRs; ∼16 Hz) during maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) than other limb muscles, but this information is unknown for the MG and LG. During multiple visits, subjects performed a series of 5–7, ∼7-s plantar flexor MVCs with tungsten microelectrodes inserted into the MG and LG. During a separate testing session, another group of subjects performed submaximal isometric contractions at 25%, 50%, and 75% MVC with inserted fine-wires in the MG, LG and soleus. Maximum steady-state MUFRs for MG and LG (∼23 Hz) were not different, but faster than prior reports for the soleus. No differences between the three triceps surae components were detected for 25% or 50% MVC, but at 75% MVC, the MG MUFRs were 31% greater than soleus. The triceps surae exhibit similar torque modulation strategies at <75% MVC, but to achieve higher contraction intensities (>75% MVC) the gastrocnemii rely on faster rates to generate maximal torque than the soleus. Therefore, the MG and LG exhibit a larger range of MUFR capacities.  相似文献

The electromyographic (EMG) activity pattern across the upper trapezius of 22 healthy subjects was investigated during maximal isometric contractions. Eight bipolar surface electrodes with 10 mm distance between adjacent electrode pairs were placed on a line from the clavicle to the scapula. At the region near the clavicle the highest EMG amplitudes were recorded during 90 ° arm abduction. At the more posterior parts the highest amplitudes were found both during arm abduction and shoulder elevation. A double differential recording technique which reduced the EMG cross-talk contribution supported the finding that the upper trapezius was differently activated when the arm posture was changed. The normalized EMG amplitude-force relationship during the shoulder elevation showed a curvilinear relationship on the anterior part of the upper trapezius with a slower increase in EMG amplitude than force at low force. The slope of the curve, at low force, increased gradually in the posterior direction on the upper trapezius. The EMG activity patterns across the upper trapezius indicate a flexibility in motor activation which maybe reflects a functional optimization of the contractions performed by this muscle.  相似文献

While different studies showed that better fitness level adds to the efficiency of the thermoregulatory system, the relationship between muscular effort and skin temperature is still unknown. Therefore, the present study assessed the relationship between neuromuscular activation and skin temperature during cycle exercise. Ten physically active participants performed an incremental workload cycling test to exhaustion while neuromuscular activations were recorded (via surface electromyography – EMG) from rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris and gastrocnemius medialis. Thermographic images were recorded before, immediately after and 10 min after finishing the cycling test, at four body regions of interest corresponding to the muscles where neuromuscular activations were monitored. Frequency band analysis was conducted to assess spectral properties of EMG signals in order to infer on priority in recruitment of motor units. Significant inverse relationship between changes in skin temperature and changes in overall neuromuscular activation for vastus lateralis was observed (r<−0.5 and p<0.04). Significant positive relationship was observed between skin temperature and low frequency components of neuromuscular activation from vastus lateralis (r>0.7 and p<0.01). Participants with larger overall activation and reduced low frequency component for vastus lateralis activation presented a better adaptive response of their thermoregulatory system by showing fewer changes in skin temperature after incremental cycling test.  相似文献

Objective:This study examined motor unit (MU) firing rates during a prolonged isometric contraction of the vastus lateralis (VL) for females and males. Methods:Surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals were recorded from the VL for eleven females and twelve males during a 45-second isometric trapezoid muscle actions at 40% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). For each MU, mean firing rate (MFR) was calculated for the initial and final 10-second epochs of the steady torque segment and regressed against recruitment threshold (RT, expressed as %MVC), as well as time at recruitment (TREC, seconds). MFR was also averaged for each subject. Results:Significant differences existed across epochs for the y-intercepts (P=0.009) of the MFR vs. TREC relationship, as well as the grouped MFR analysis (P<0.001); no differences were observed between epochs for the MFR vs. RT relationship. Significant differences existed between sexes for the grouped MFR analysis (P=0.049), but no differences were observed for the MFR vs. TREC or MFR vs. RT relationships. Conclusion:Analysis method may impact interpretation of firing rate behavior; increases in MU firing rates across a prolonged isometric contraction were observed in the MFR vs. TREC relationship and the grouped MFR analysis.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of isometric pull down exercise on muscle activity with shoulder elevation angles of 60°, 90°, and 120° and sagittal, scapular, and frontal movement planes, by electromyography (EMG) of the latissimus dorsi, inferior fibers of trapezius, and latissimus dorsi/inferior fibers of trapezius activity ratio. Fourteen men performed nine conditions of isometric pull down exercise (three conditions of shoulder elevation × three conditions of movement planes). Surface EMG was used to collect data from the latissimus dorsi and inferior fibers of trapezius during exercise. Two-way repeated analysis of variance with two within-subject factors (shoulder elevation angles and planes of movement) was used to determine the significance of the latissimus dorsi and inferior fibers of trapezius activity and latissimus dorsi/inferior fibers of trapezius activity ratio. The latissimus dorsi activity and ratio between the latissimus dorsi and the inferior fibers of trapezius were significantly decreased as shoulder elevation angle increased from 60° to 120°. The inferior fibers of trapezius activity was significantly increased with shoulder elevation angle. The EMG activity and the ratios were not affected by changes in movement planes. This study suggests that selective activation of the latissimus dorsi is accomplished with a low shoulder elevation angle, while the inferior fibers of the trapezius are activated with high shoulder elevation angles.  相似文献

No evidence of expertise-related changes in muscle synergies during rowing   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The purpose of the present study was to determine whether expertise in rowing is driven by a specific structure in muscular coordination. We compared seven experienced rowers and eight untrained (i.e., inexperienced) subjects during rowing on an ergometer. Both surface electromyography activity and mechanical patterns (forces exerted at the handle and the foot-stretcher) were recorded during a high intensity rowing exercise. A non-negative matrix factorization was applied to 23 electromyographic patterns to differentiate muscle synergies. Results showed that expertise was not associated with different dimensionality in the electromyographic data and that three muscle synergies were sufficient to explain the majority of the variance accounted for (i.e., >90% of the total variance) in the two populations. The synergies extracted were similar in the two populations, with identical functional roles. While the temporal organization of the propulsive synergies was very similar, slight differences were found in the composition of the muscle synergies (muscle synergy vectors) between the two populations. The results suggests that rowing expertise would not require the development of novel muscle synergies but would imply intrinsic synergies already used in different behaviors. Performance in rowing is more probably linked to adjustments in the mechanical output of the muscle synergies rather than to differences in the shape and timing of their activations.  相似文献

We investigated motor control strategies utilized by individuals with recurrent low back pain (rLBP) during active pain and remission periods as well as by back-healthy controls using the Balance-Dexterity Task. Nineteen young adults with rLBP were tested first when they were in pain and then again in symptom remission, and 19 matched controls were also tested. Trunk kinematic coupling and muscle co-activation were examined while participants performed the task by standing on one leg while compressing a spring with a maximum consistent force with the other leg. We found a decreased bilateral external oblique co-activation during the spring condition of the task compared to the stable block condition in people with rLBP compared to back healthy individuals. There was also reduced trunk coupling during the spring condition of the task compared to the stable block condition in both the rLBP active and remission groups, but no group difference between rLBP and back-healthy individuals. When individuals were in active pain, they exhibited more co-activation than when they were in remission, but the co-activation during active pain was not greater than in back-healthy individuals.  相似文献

Task-dependent differences in relative activity between “functional” subdivisions within human muscles are well documented. Contrary, independent voluntary control of anatomical subdivisions, termed neuromuscular compartments is not observed in human muscles. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to investigate whether subdivisions within the human trapezius can be independently activated by voluntary command using biofeedback guidance. Bipolar electromyographical electrodes were situated on four subdivisions of the trapezius muscle. The threshold for “active” and “rest” for each subdivision was set to >12% and <1.5% of the maximal electromyographical amplitude recorded during a maximal voluntary contraction. After 1 h with biofeedback from each of the four trapezius subdivisions, 11 of 15 subjects learned selective activation of at least one of the four anatomical subdivisions of the trapezius muscle. All subjects managed to voluntarily activate the lower subdivisions independently from the upper subdivisions. Half of the subjects succeeded to voluntarily activate both upper subdivisions independently from the two lower subdivisions. These findings show that anatomical subdivisions of the human trapezius muscle can be independently activated by voluntary command, indicating neuromuscular compartmentalization of the trapezius muscle. The independent activation of the upper and lower subdivisions of the trapezius is in accordance with the selective innervation by the fine cranial and main branch of the accessory nerve to the upper and lower subdivisions. These findings provide new insight into motor control characteristics, learning possibilities, and function of the clinically relevant human trapezius muscle.  相似文献

To assess the surface electromyographic spectral characteristics of masticatory and neck muscles during the performance of maximum voluntary clench (MVC) tasks, 29 healthy young adults (15 men, 14 women, mean age 22 years) were examined. Electromyography of masseter, temporalis and upper trapezius muscles was performed during 5-s MVCs either on cotton rolls or in intercuspal position. Using a fast Fourier transform, the median power frequency (MPF) was obtained for the first and last seconds of clench, and compared between sexes, muscles, sides, tests and time intervals using ANOVAs.On average, the MPFs did not differ between sexes or sides (p > 0.05), but significant effects of muscle (MPF temporalis larger than masseter, larger than trapezius muscles), test (larger MPFs when clenching in intercuspal position than when clenching on cotton rolls) and time (larger MPFs in the first than in the fifth second of clench) were found. In conclusion, a set of data to characterize the sEMG spectral characteristics of jaw and neck muscles in young adult subjects performing MVC tasks currently in use within the dental field was obtained. Reference values may assist in the assessment of patients with alterations in the cranio-cervical-mandibular system.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare trunk muscular recruitment and lumbar spine kinematics when motion was constrained to either the thorax or the pelvis. Nine healthy women performed four upright standing planar movements (rotations, anterior–posterior translations, medial–lateral translations, and horizontal circles) while constraining pelvis motion and moving the thorax or moving the pelvis while minimizing thorax motion, and four isometric trunk exercises (conventional curl-up, reverse curl-up, cross curl-up, and reverse cross curl-up). Surface EMG (upper and lower rectus abdominis, lateral and medial aspects of external oblique, internal oblique, and latissimus dorsi) and 3D lumbar displacements were recorded. Pelvis movements produced higher EMG amplitudes of the oblique abdominals than thorax motions in most trials, and larger lumbar displacements in the medial–lateral translations and horizontal circles. Conversely, thorax movements produced larger rotational lumbar displacement than pelvis motions during rotations and higher EMG amplitudes for latissimus dorsi during rotations and anterior–posterior translations and for lower rectus abdominis during the crossed curl-ups. Thus, different neuromuscular compartments appear when the objective changes from pelvis to thorax motion. This would suggest that both movement patterns should be considered when planning spine stabilization programs, to optimize exercises for the movement and muscle activations desired.  相似文献

The identification of the motor unit (MU) innervation zone (IZ) using surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals detected on the skin with a linear array or a matrix of electrodes has been recently proposed in the literature. However, an analysis of the reliability of this procedure and, therefore, of the suitability of the sEMG signals for this purpose has not been reported. The purpose of this work is to describe the intra and inter-rater reliability and the suitability of surface EMG in locating the innervation zone of the upper trapezius muscle. Two operators were trained on electrode matrix positioning and sEMG signal analysis. Ten healthy subjects, instructed to perform a series of isometric contractions of the upper trapezius muscle participated in the study. The two operators collected sEMG signals and then independently estimated the IZ location through visual analysis. Results showed an almost perfect agreement for intra-rater and inter-rater reliability. The constancy of IZ location could be affected by the factors reflecting the population of active MUs and their IZs, including: the contraction intensity, the acquisition period analyzed, the contraction repetition. In almost all cases the IZ location shift due to these factors did not exceed 4 mm. Results generalization to other muscles should be made with caution.  相似文献

In addition to the role of muscle coactivation, a major question in the field is how antagonist activation is controlled to minimize its opposing effect on agonist muscle performance. Muscle fatigue is an interesting condition to analyze the neural adjustments in antagonist muscle activity and to gain more insights into the control mechanisms of coactivation. In that context, previous studies have reported that although the EMG activity of agonists and antagonists increase in parallel, the ratio between EMG activities in the two sets of muscles during a fatiguing submaximal contraction decreased progressively and contributed to a reduction in the time to task failure. In contrast, more recent studies using a novel normalization procedure indicated that the agonist/antagonist ratio remained relatively constant, suggesting that the fatigue-related increase in coactivation does not impede performance. Current knowledge also indicates that peripheral mechanisms cannot by themselves mediate the intensity of antagonist coactivation during fatiguing contractions, implying that supraspinal mechanisms are involved. The unique modulation of the synaptic input from Ia afferents to the antagonist motor neurones during a fatiguing contraction of the agonist muscles further suggests a separate control of the two sets of muscles.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of elastic compression on muscle strength, electromyographic (EMG), and mechanomyographic (MMG) responses of quadriceps femoris during isometric and isokinetic contractions. Twelve participants performed 5 s isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and 25 consecutive and maximal isokinetic knee extensions at 60 and 300 °/s with no (control, CC), medium (MC), and high (HC) compression applied to the muscle. The EMG and MMG signals were collected simultaneously with muscle isometric and isokinetic strength data. The results showed that the elevated compression did not improve peak torque, peak power, average power, total work, and regression of torque in the isometric and isokinetic contractions. However, the root mean squared value of EMG in both HC and MC significantly decreased compared with CC at 60 and 300 °/s (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the EMG mean power frequency in HC was significantly higher than that in CC at 60 °/s (p < 0.05) whereas no significant compression effect was found in the MMG mean power frequency. These findings provide preliminary evidence suggesting that the increase in local compression pressure may effectively increase muscle efficiency and this might be beneficial in reducing muscle fatigue during concentric isokinetic muscle contractions.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to use wavelet analyses and pattern classification techniques to examine potential changes in the joint time–frequency distribution of surface electromyographic (EMG) signals due to an 8-week resistance training program. Thirteen untrained men (mean ± S.D. age = 22.2 ± 4.0 yrs) performed eight separate submaximal isometric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors in 10% increments from 10 to 80% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). During each muscle action, a monopolar surface EMG signal was detected from the vastus lateralis. All signals were then analyzed with a wavelet analysis designed specifically for EMG signals, and the resulting intensity patterns were classified using pattern classification techniques into their respective pre-training versus post-training categories. The results showed accuracy rates (% of correctly classified patterns) that ranged from approximately 62 to 92%, but these rates did not change consistently with increases in force. In addition, for five of the eight submaximal force levels, the classification was considered to be significantly different from random. Thus, although the differences between the pre- and post-training EMG intensity patterns were not always consistent, our findings did suggest that there is the potential for wavelet analyses and pattern classification techniques to be used to examine neuromuscular adaptations during resistance training.  相似文献

Microcirculation in the upper portion of the trapezius muscle was measured percutaneously in a group of 16 healthy women of different ages by continuous laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) in relation to electromyography (EMG) during an endurance test. During the measurements the subject kept her arms straight and elevated at 45° in the scapular plane and held a 1-kg load in each hand as long as possible. This was followed by rest with the arms hanging and carrying no load. The 10-min recording period comprised 1-min initial rest followed by the endurance test and then recovery. Signal processing was done by computer on line. The LDF and root-mean-square (rms) EMG signals were normalized. Spectrum analyses of EMG mean power frequency (MPF) were performed. The amount of load produced was on average 2,267 (SD 939) N · m · s, i.e. shoulder torque × time expressed as Newton meter seconds, and the endurance time was 4.3 (SD 1.20) min. The rms-EMG as well as the LDF increased significantly during endurance, both when related to endurance time and to amount of load. The MPF showed no significant changes. The mean total increase in muscle blood flow was 175% of that recorded in the initial rest period. The average increase per each 10 s of contraction was 2.9%. Maximum was reached during the 1st min of recovery followed by a fall to the base level that was reached within 77 s on average. The amount of load produced and the blood flow increase was smaller than that found in a separate study of men, indicating a lower functional capacity. This may be of importance for the development of neck-shoulder disability in women.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to discriminate fatigue of upper limb muscles depending on the external load, through the development and analysis of a muscle fatigue index. Muscle fatigue is expressed by a fatigue index based on an amplitude parameter (calculated in the time domain) and a fatigue index based on a frequency parameter (a parameter calculated in the frequency domain). The fatigue index involves a regression function that describes changes in the EMG signal parameter, time elapsing before muscle fatigue and the probability of specific trends in changes in EMG parameters for the population under study.

The experimental study covered a group of 10 young men. During the study, they exerted force at a specific level and for a specific time in 12 load variants. During the study, EMG signals from four muscles of the upper limb were recorded (trapezius pars descendents, biceps brachii caput breve, extensor carpi radialis brevis, flexor carpi ulnaris). For each variant and for each examined muscles, the value of the fatigue index was calculated. Values of that index quantitatively expressed fatigue of a specific muscle in a specific load variant.

A statistical analysis indicated variation in the fatigue of the biceps brachii caput breve, extensor carpi radialis brevis, and flexor carpi ulnaris muscles depending on the external load (load variant) according to the task performed with the upper limb.

The study demonstrated usefulness of the fatigue index in expressing quantitatively muscle fatigue and in discriminating muscle fatigue depending on the external load.  相似文献
