Summary The effect of inbreeding on the puffing patterns of polytene chromosomes of Drosophila subobscura was analysed. Puffing activity was studied in two strains of D. subobscura: one which had been subject to inbreeding for 288 generations, and in the hybrids from a cross between them. A strong overall decrease in puffing activity was found in the inbred line. In general, hybrids behaved in a similar way to the inbred line or showed activity intermediate between the two lines. The fertility and viability of the two homozygous lines and of the hybrids were also determined. These parameters of fitness are very low in the inbred line. Summary The meiotic behaviour of chromosomes was studied in four inbred lines and their F 1 hybrids of P. typhoides. The inbred lines showed a decrease in mean chiasma frequency when compared with the population plants, but differed from one another in their mean chiasma frequencies. Together with the decrease in mean chiasma frequency the inbreds showed variation in mean chiasma frequencies. The inbred lines showed a number of meiotic abnormalities such as extra chromosomes, extra fragments, desynapsis, persistent nucleoli and differential condensation of chromosomes. The F 1 hybrids of these inbreds exhibited heterosis for chiasma frequency. All the F 1's had mean chiasma frequencies higher than the means of the respective participating parents. The F 1's, however, differed in the degree of heterosis exhibited. In the F 1 hybrids, the variation in mean chiasma frequency, both between plants and between PMC's within plants, was significantly lower than that of the inbred lines. The effect of environment was studied in the inbred lines and their F 1 hybrids. The mean chiasma frequencies of the inbred lines were significantly lower, and the variation in mean chiasma frequencies was greater, in the stress season. The mean chiasma frequencies of F 1's did not show any significant differences between the two seasons. The F 1's exhibited less variation in mean chiasma frequency than the inbred lines, showing that F 1's were developmentally more stable. The F 1's did not show any meiotic abnormalities in either season.  相似文献

Locomotor activity rhythm of the supralittoral species Talitrus saltator and Tylos europaeus was studied under continuous light in populations of Korba and Barkoukech beaches in summer. Results showed that these two species were characterized by a nocturnal behaviour. Under the subjective night, the activity was continuous for T. saltator and interrupted in T. europaeus with the presence of a clear drift towards the right more accentuated for the second species. Whatever the site, using actograms and the waveforms, results showed the absence of bimodal profile in T. europaeus and the plurimodal one in T. saltator. Moreover, the most important activity peaks were observed around the dawn and the dusk, respectively. Furthermore, periodogram and MESA analyzes highlighted the presence of ultradian and circadian components. Whatever the component and the site, the inter-individual variability was more pronounced in T. europaeus. Moreover, whatever the site, individuals of T. europaeus were more active and the locomotor rhythm was more defined in T. saltator. With reference to environmental stability and variability, the differences of locomotor activity characteristics observed between these two species are explained as a need for plasticity to adapt to environmental changes.  相似文献

The two main factors involved in field-scale production of seed of F1 hybrid Brussels sprouts are pollen availability and honeybee behaviour. Pollen availability depends upon the extent of winter survival of the parent inbreds, their flowering times, plant size and on the number of flowers per plant. Plant losses varied between inbreds and between sites and seasons. Differences in the commencement of flowering time in pairs of inbreds varied from 7 to 21 days, and plant size affected flower number. In hybrid seed-production there was a direct relationship between the number of mature flowers on each inbred and the percentage of non-hybrid seed produced from that inbred. Bees were highly selective in their visits to inbreds, and a mean selfing-to crossing-movement ratio of 30:1 was observed. This behaviour, together with pollen availability, greatly influenced the production of ‘sibs’. Radioactive experiments showed that the amount of cross-pollen carried by a bee decreased by about 30% at each flower visited but radioactive pollen grains were detected on the tenth flower visited. Of a number of factors investigated as possibly influencing bee behaviour, differences in flower colour and plant height were associated with discrimination between inbred lines.  相似文献

Over recent decades, changes in zebrafish (Danio rerio) behaviour have become popular quantitative indicators in biomedical studies. The circadian rhythms of behavioural processes in zebrafish are known to enable effective utilization of energy and resources, therefore attracting interest in zebrafish as a research model. This review covers a variety of circadian behaviours in this species, including diurnal rhythms of spawning, feeding, locomotor activity, shoaling, light/dark preference, and vertical position preference. Changes in circadian activity during zebrafish ontogeny are reviewed, including ageing-related alterations and chemically induced variations in rhythmicity patterns. Both exogenous and endogenous sources of inter-individual variability in zebrafish circadian behaviour are detailed. Additionally, we focus on different environmental factors with the potential to entrain circadian processes in zebrafish. This review describes two principal ways whereby diurnal behavioural rhythms can be entrained: (i) modulation of organismal physiological state, which can have masking or enhancing effects on behavioural endpoints related to endogenous circadian rhythms, and (ii) modulation of period and amplitude of the endogenous circadian rhythm due to competitive relationships between the primary and secondary zeitgebers. In addition, different peripheral oscillators in zebrafish can be entrained by diverse zeitgebers. This complicated orchestra of divergent influences may cause variability in zebrafish circadian behaviours, which should be given attention when planning behavioural studies.  相似文献

Animals of the amphipod Orchestia montagui are kept in constant darkness with two short light pulses. One pulse is applied at the beginning of subjective night (around the dusk) and the other one at the end of subjective night (around the dawn). The pulse duration is estimated in the order of one or two hours around the dusk as well as the dawn. The locomotor activity rhythm was monitored in individual animals in summer under constant temperature. Results revealed that whatever the experimental conditions, under continuous or interrupted darkness by pulses, two endogenous components have been highlighted. In fact, Periodogram analysis showed the presence of ultradian and circadian periods around 12 and 24 h, respectively. The shortest circadian period and the most important inter-individual variability was observed under pulse of 2 h around the dusk with mean value equal to τDD+pulse = 24h38′ ± 4h34′. The activity profiles are in majority unimodal. Moreover, the most activity peak showed a slipping of its location from the middle of subjective night under constant darkness to the middle of subjective day under pulse. Globally, the locomotor activity rhythm of O. montagui was better defined under pulses and specimens were significantly more active under continuous darkness. Moreover, a great variability around the activity time was observed especially with pulse of 1 h.  相似文献

In the families produced by diallel 2 × 2 crosses there were positive relationships in two experimental groups between individual heterozygosity (H0) at four allozyme loci (PGM*, G3PDH*, sMEP*, sMDH?3,4*) and the size of the fish, their morphological variability (10 traits) and the viability among families. An integrative H0 influence on complexes of morphological traits was also obtained. On the basis of factor and discriminant analysis it was shown that H0 correlated with morphological homeostasis at least within one experimental group.  相似文献

In the past 20 yr, the presence of blood platelet inhibitory activity in plant species from the genus Allium has been confirmed by a range of clinical and in vitro investigations. Although a number of Allium species have been identified as possessing antiplatelet properties, little is known of the variability for this trait among accessions in these species. Experiments were conducted to assess variability in antiplatelet activity of 58 Allium (Alliaceae) accessions. Extracts were prepared from a diverse collection of 16 Allium species accessions, 33 cultivated accessions of Allium cepa including standard cultivars, inbred lines, and open-pollinated populations, and nine Allium cepa plant introductions of diverse origin. Platelet inhibitory activity was determined via a platelet aggregation assay with human platelet-rich plasma. Relative in vitro inhibition of platelet aggregation was measured for each accession and control samples, and inhibition constants (IC50) were calculated. Dose-dependent inhibition was observed and measured for each Allium accession. Significant (P < 0.01) IC50 variability was detected among accessions, with the lowest accession IC50 values exhibiting nearly 50-fold greater inhibition of aggregation than the highest accession IC50 values. IC5() variability among Allium cepa accessions was ≈ 12 times less than among Allium species accessions. Results from this investigation demonstrate substantial variability for efficacy of the antiplatelet factor among Allium accessions.  相似文献

Four anionic peroxidase isoenzymes in main stem tissues of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) were separated electrophoretically on acrylamide gels and their individual activities measured spectrophotometrically in the gels. Activities were expressed in terms of areas of optical density peaks corresponding to the locations of the isoenzymes. Four isoenzymes were assayed for activity in this way in two inbred genotypes and their F1, F2, and first backcross progeny. Crosses were made in all combinations between the two parental genotypes and their reciprocal F1 hybrids to produce 16 progenies of the generations above. Isoenzyme separations and assays for activity were carried out on individual plants of each of the 16 progenies. A model estimating cytoplasmic effects across segregating generations as differences between all progeny of the one compared to the other F1 reciprocal hybrid, either in a male or a female direction, was fitted to the activity data by weighted least-squares procedures. Cytoplasmic effects transmitted through male gametes from the F1 reciprocals were demonstrable for three of the four anionic peroxidase isoenzymes.Supported in part by the National Research Council of Canada.  相似文献

Mating type allele distribution and phenotypic variability were investigated in field populations of Laccaria bicolor. Sporophores associated with Norway spruce (Picea abies), colonized by natural sources of inoculum and growing in a seed orchard, were sampled to obtain dikaryotic strains and assay their phenotypic variability for traits important to the symbiosis. Basid-iospores were also collected for mating type analysis of different mycelia. Four sporophore mating types were identified containing seven A and five B factors. Out-breeding efficiency was estimated at 73.8% and the population was slightly inbred. Crosses with previously characterized L. bicolor strains from two nearby populations identified in total six sporophore mating types and ten A and nine B factors, for an estimated outbreeding efficiency (85.7%) similar to previous studies of more spatially disparate Laccaria spp. populations. Dikaryotic strains were tested for mycelial growth rate, as a measure of their competitive ability, on agar media containing a soluble (NaH2PO4), or an insoluble (CaHPO4) phosphate source. Their ability to solubilize the latter was also tested to assess their relative capacity to access insoluble, inorganic phosphate. In most cases, significant variation was detected among strains from the same site for all variables. On three sites (VC4, VC5 and VC7), each determined previously to possess a uniform mycelial genotype, phenotypic variability was likely due to epigenetic variation among different strains of the same genotype. Possible evidence for dikaryon-monokaryon crosses was observed in vivo on one sample site (VC2) where adjacent mycelia shared two mating factors. The phenotypic variability of different mycelial genotypes reflected their genetic variability observed as mating type allele diversity and underlined the importance of basidiospore dispersal in introducing new genotypes into the population. The reproductive strategies of L. bicolor are discussed and compared to those of other basidiomycete species.  相似文献

Mice are important models for biomedical research because of the possibility of standardizing genetic background and environmental conditions, which both affect phenotypic variability. Inbred mouse strains as well as F1 hybrid mice are routinely used as genetically defined animal models; however, only a few studies investigated the variance of phenotypic parameters in inbred versus F1 hybrid mice and the potential interference of the genetic background with different housing conditions. Thus, we analyzed the ranges of clinical chemical and hematologic parameters in C3H and C57BL/6 inbred mice and their reciprocal F1 hybrids (B6C3F1, C3B6F1) in two different mouse facilities. Two thirds of the blood parameters examined in the same strain differed between the facilities for both the inbred strains and the F1 hybrid lines. The relation of the values between inbred and F1 hybrid mice was also affected by the facility. The variance of blood parameters in F1 hybrid mice compared with their parental inbred strains was inconsistent in one facility but generally smaller in the other facility. A subsequent study of F1 hybrid animals derived from the parental strains C3H and BALB/c, which was done in the latter housing unit, detected no general difference in the variance of blood parameters between F1 hybrid and inbred mice. Our study clearly demonstrates the possibility of major interactions between genotype and environment regarding the variance of clinical chemical and hematologic parameters.  相似文献

The empirical distribution of the mean viability of mutation accumulation lines, obtained from three published experiments, was analyzed using minimum-distance estimation. In two cases (Mukai et al. 1972; Ohnishi 1977), mutations were allowed to accumulate in copies of chromosome II protected from natural selection and recombination. In the other one (Fernández and López-Fanjul 1996), they accumulated in inbred lines derived from an isogenic stock. In contrast with currently accepted hypotheses, we consistently estimated low (about 0.01) genomic viability mutation rates, λ, and a small kurtosis of the distribution of mutational effects on viability (a) in the three datasets. Minimum-distance estimates of the per-generation mean viability change due to mutation (λE[a]) were also obtained. These were very similar for both chromosomal datasets, their absolute values being about five times smaller than estimates obtained from the observed change in mean viability during the mutation process. It must be noted that, in both experiments, viability was measured relative to the Cy chromosome of a Cy/Pm stock. Thus, an unnoticed viability increase in this Cy chromosome may have resulted in overestimation of the mean viability reduction in the lines. In parallel, minimum-distance estimation of λE(a) from inbred lines data (where the selective pressure during the accumulation process was larger) was even somewhat smaller, in absolute value, and very close to the estimate obtained by comparing the mean viability of the lines with that of the control isogenic line. The evolutionary importance of these results, as well as their relevance to the solution of the mutational load paradox, is discussed.  相似文献

Mesosternal (MS) bristles in Drosophila are a pair of machrochaetae found at the sternal end of the sternopleural (STP) microchaetae, and are thought to be invariable. In a closely related drosophilid genus, Zaprionus, their number is four and, in contrast to Drosophila, they show interspecific and intraspecific variability. The genetic basis of MS bristle number variability was studied in Z. indianus, the only cosmopolitan species of the genus. The trait responded rapidly to selection and two lines were obtained, one lacking any bristles (0-0) and the other bearing the normal phenotype (2-2). Other symmetrical phenotypes, (1-1) and (3-3), could also be selected for, but with lesser success. By contrast, STP bristle number did not vary significantly between the two lines (0-0) and (2-2), revealing its genetic independence from MS bristle number. Reciprocal crosses between these two lines showed that MS bristle number is mainly influenced by a major gene on the X chromosome (i.e. F1 males always resembled their mothers) with codominant expression (i.e. heterozygous F1 females harboured an average phenotype of 2 bristles). However, trait penetrance was incomplete and backcrosses revealed that this variability was partly due to genetic modifiers, most likely autosomal. The canalization of MS bristle number was investigated under different temperatures, and the increased appearance of abnormal phenotypes mainly occurred at extreme temperatures. There was a bias, however, towards bristle loss, as shown by a liability (developmental map) analysis. Finally, when ancestral and introduced populations were compared, the latter were far less stable, suggesting that genetic bottlenecks may perturb the MS bristle number canalization system. MS bristle number, thus, appears to be an excellent model for investigating developmental canalization at both the quantitative and the molecular level.  相似文献

A further esterase, esterase 11, which exhibits a polymorphism detectable by electrophoresis, has been observed in the house mouse, Mus musculus. In 15 inbred strains and two outbred strains, the ES-11A phenotype has been found, composed of two bands of enzyme activity of greater anodal electrophoretic mobility than the two bands of the ES-11B phenotype found in one inbred strain, one wild stock, and 101 wild mice. In F1 hybrids (IS/Cam×C57 BL/Gr), the phenotype shown corresponds to a mixture of the two parental phenotypes. In backcrosses, ES-11 segregates as an autosomal gene, designated Es-11, closely linked to Es-2 and Es-5 on chromosome 8.This work was supported by the Medical Research Council.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to detect developmental and environmental factors that influence nuclear DNA content in H. annuus inbred lines RHA 271 and RHA 299. DNA content (2C) was determined by laser flow cytometry of nuclei isolated from the first leaf pair of seedlings grown in a greenhouse and in growth chambers. DNA content of greenhouse grown seedlings was highly variable, ranging from 3.2 to 8.0 pg for RHA 299 and 5.2 to 8.2 pg for RHA 271. DNA content only weakly correlated to the position of the achene in the head from which the seedlings derived, and not at all to the position of the head on the plant. Experimentally varied environmental parameters of heat stress and water deficit, phosphate fertilizer levels in the substrate, and pH had little or no effect on the DNA content of seedlings. Seedlings grown with increased levels of substrate nitrogen in the form of NH4NO3 showed a significant increase in the mean DNA content. Plants grown in one of two types of growth chambers possessed less variability in DNA content, 6.2–8.4 pg for RHA 299 and 6.8–7.4 pg for RHA 271. Plants grown in a second growth chamber were highly variable with DNA content ranging from 3.0 to 8.6 pg for RHA 299 and 3.0 to 7.8 pg for RHA 271. Measurable physical differences between the growth chambers were irradiance level and the ratio of red to far red light. The hypothesis is presented that DNA stability of sunflowers is influenced by light quantity and/or quality.  相似文献

Freshly adult individuals of two sympatric species, Orchestia gammarellus and Orchestia montagui, collected in spring from the supralittoral zone of Bizerte lagoon (Northern of Tunisia) at Menzel Jemil, were housed in a controlled environment cabinet. Locomotor activity rhythm was recorded in isolated individuals and groups by infrared actograph every 20 min by a data-logger, at a constant temperature of 18 ± 0.5 °C under constant darkness. According to double-plotted actograms and waveform curves, results showed the presence of two different locomotor patterns; in fact, individuals of O. gammarellus concentrated their activity during the hours of subjective night, whereas O. montagui were active during the subjective night and beyond the subjective dawn. Furthermore, whatever the species studied, periodogram analysis indicated a distinct circadian pattern of activity. Moreover, whatever the experiment condition is, the most clearly defined rhythms were found in O. gammarellus. In contrary to O. gammarellus, the group effect on the locomotor rhythm parameters seems to be less marked in O. montagui. On the other hand, a highly inter-individual variability was observed in the activity time for these two species and especially for O. montagui groups.  相似文献

The ultrastructure and dimensions of chloroplasts in leaf mesophyll cells were quantitatively examined in three parental inbred lines of maize (Zea mays L.) and their four hybrids subjected to two types of four-week low-temperature (LT) treatment: the abrupt onset of chilling temperatures (“severe chilling”, SC) and the gradual, more moderate one (“moderate chilling”, MC). The relationship between the response of individual genotypes to one or the other type of chilling was analyzed as well as the possibility to predict the behaviour of chloroplasts in hybrids from that of their parents. Although selected parameters of chloroplast ultrastructure (e.g. volume densities of granal and intergranal thylakoids, plastoglobuli, and peripheral reticulum) and dimensions changed due to the exposure of maize plants to LT, no general pattern of such changes was found for this species due to the observed intraspecific variability. The response of some genotype to SC could not be predicted from its behaviour under MC (and vice versa) and no clear rules could be applied for the inheritance of chloroplast response to chilling in the general sense. Thus, great caution should be always taken when interpreting the results of studies aimed at the dissection of chloroplast ultrastructure as affected by LT, particularly in case such studies are made with one genotype or under one type of chilling only.  相似文献

Calling behaviour and the characteristics of the males’ call are important for mate attraction, female mate choice and male mating success in anurans. In this study I investigated the variation in calling activity and the variation in one spectral (dominant frequency) and four temporal properties (call rate, call duration, duty cycle and pulse rate) of the advertisement call of strawberry poison frogs, Dendrobates pumilio, in two Costa Rican populations during two study periods. Regarding all call properties, no differences were found between populations or years, but between‐male variation was significantly higher than within‐recording and within‐male variation. Dominant frequency was less variable within and among males than temporal call properties and I classified the former as static and the latter as intermediate properties of the call. No call property seemed to be strongly affected by body length or weight. Moreover, I used behavioural observations to relate male calling behaviour to mating success. Calling activity was more variable between males and accounted for more variability in mating success in multiple regression models than any call property. Some call properties (call rate, dominant frequency and pulse rate) were also related to male mating success in one or two study periods. These call properties are probably important for females during courtship to assess their prospective mate and/or for competitive male–male interactions. Furthermore, I compared call properties and mating success of some males for which data were available for both study periods. Pulse rate was lower in the second than in the first year, suggesting age‐related changes in this call property. Moreover, male D. pumilio increased their relative mating success from the first to the second study year. Together with other studies, the data of this study suggest that, in anurans, endurance rivalry contributes more to variation in male mating success than does female choice based on male characteristics.  相似文献

The evolution and expression of mate choice behaviour in either sex depends on the sex‐specific combination of mating costs, benefits of choice and constraints on choice. If the benefits of choice are larger for one sex, we would expect that sex to be choosier, assuming that the mating costs and constraints on choice are equal between sexes. Because deliberate inbreeding is a powerful genetic method for experimental manipulation of the quality of study organisms, we tested the effects of both male and female inbreeding on egg and offspring production in Drosophila littoralis. Female inbreeding significantly reduced offspring production (mostly due to lower egg‐to‐adult viability), whereas male inbreeding did not affect offspring production (despite a slight effect of paternal inbreeding on egg‐to‐adult viability). As inbreeding depressed female quality more than male quality, the benefits of mate choice were larger for males than for females. In mate choice experiments, inbreeding did not affect male mating success (measured as a probability to be accepted as a mate in a large group), suggesting that females did not discriminate among inbred and outbred males. In contrast, female mating success was affected by inbreeding, with outbred females having higher mating success than inbred females. This result was not explained by lower activity of inbred females. Our results show that D. littoralis males benefit from mating with outbred females of high genetic quality and suggest adaptive male mate choice for female genetic quality in this species. Thus, patterns of mating success in mate choice trials mirrored the benefits of choice: the sex that benefited more from choice (i.e. males) was more choosy.  相似文献
