Chemical communication by scent‐marking is widespread among mammals and can serve different purposes, such as territory demarcation, mate attraction and self‐advertisement. In this study, we examined scent‐marking behavior by subordinate Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber) in a population in southeast Norway. We conducted scent experiments in 18 family groups, simulating a territory intruder using experimental scent mounds (ESM). In total, we recorded 196 territorial reactions (destroying and/or overmarking of scent mounds). Subordinates contributed 14% of all territorial reactions and first overmarked 12% of the ESM, and the number of subordinates in the family group did not increase the total number of territorial reactions. This suggests that the contribution by subordinates plays a minor role in territorial defense. The number of territorial reactions by subordinates was positively related to the age of their parents, suggesting that subordinates might take over territorial duties with increasing parental senescence, likely because they have increased chances of inheriting the territory. Increased experience in territorial activities possibly helps subordinates to successfully gain and defend a territory of their own.  相似文献

Forage availability for wild rodents varies with season. In turn, the composition of food can affect morphometric parameters of the digestive tract. This study was performed in Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber) whose population was close to extinction in most Eurasian countries, but has now increased. Due to the previous low number of studies, information about the effect of forage availability on the digestive tract morphology has previously been lacking. This study was performed using beavers captured from the natural environment during three seasons of different forage availability: winter, summer and autumn. It was found that the diet of the beaver varied during the year; in winter it was dominated by woody material consisting of willow shoots, whereas in summer the diet was primarily herbs, grass and leaves. Season also affected the mass of digested contents of the digestive tract. The digestive content increased in the caecum and colon in winter and autumn, when poor-quality food dominated the beaver’s diet. The results indicated that the digestive tract parameters of beavers varied based on the composition of available forage.  相似文献

Surveys of the prevalence of the intestinal protozoan Giardia spp. in animal populations have relied almost exclusively on the detection of cysts in fecal samples. We have determined the prevalence of Giardia spp. in beaver and muskrat populations in four northeastern states and Minnesota by using both the detection of trophozoites in mucosal scrapings from live-trapped animals at necropsy and the detection of cysts in fecal samples collected from kill-trapped animals. In muskrats the prevalence of Giardia infection was 36.6% by cyst detection in fecal samples (n = 790) from kill-trapped animals and 95.9% in live-trapped muskrats when the intestinal contents were analyzed for the presence of trophozoites (n = 219). Similarly, in beavers, Giardia infection was 9.2% by cyst detection in fecal samples (n = 662) from kill-trapped beavers and 13.7% in live-trapped animals examined for the presence of intestinal trophozoites (n = 302). The detection of trophozoites in mucosal scrapings from live-trapped animals consistently yielded a significantly higher prevalence for both muskrats and beavers than did the method based on detection of cysts in the fecal samples. The prevalence of Giardia infection in juvenile and adult live-trapped muskrats was similar (92.5 and 94.4%, respectively), but the prevalence in juvenile live-trapped beavers (23.2%) was significantly greater than that seen in the adult animals (12.6%). No difference in Giardia prevalence on the basis of sex was seen in either animal species. Regional variation, often statistically significant, was seen in the prevalence of Giardia in beavers in the northeastern states and Minnesota, but was not detected for muskrats.  相似文献

Ontogenetic allometry of the cranium was studied in 580 individuals of the Eurasian beavers Castor fiber in two subspecies out of six autochthonous and reintroduced populations using the methods of multivariate nonparametric statistics. It was noted that the growth dynamics demonstrates a correspondence to trajectories of ontogenetic rodent models with the difference that intensive beaver growth finishes by the age of four years. Significant differences in the dynamics of age variability were detected in the beavers of two subspecies; with somewhat smaller initial postnatal sizes, C. fiber belorussicus grows faster than C. fiber orientoeuropaeus.  相似文献

Foraging herbivores have to trade-off between energy requirements and predator avoidance. We aimed to study the relative roles of these factors in beavers (Castor canadensis) when foraging on land. We hypothesized that beavers were able to assess the risk of predation by using two main cues: the distance from the water and the presence or absence of predator odors. First, we studied the food selection of beavers in relation to distance from the water in natural settings. The transects were made at beaver ponds, and the diameter, species, and distance from the shore of intact and beaver-cut trees were recorded. Secondly, we placed rows of aspen sticks (Populus tremula) perpendicular to the shore around beaver ponds, and treated each row with a neutral, alien, or wolf odor. We found that aspen, downy birch (Betula pubescens), and speckled alder (Alnus incana) were the preferred tree species. More of these species were cut close to the shore, and cut trees were smaller further away from the shore, except in the case of aspen. In the experiment, most of the aspen sticks were taken close to the shore. As predicted, beavers took less aspen sticks in rows treated with wolf odor than water. As the predator odor did not affect the foraging distance from the shore, it is likely that our observation that foraging was the most intense close to shore is due to energetic constraints. However, predation risk probably affects the decision whether to forage on the land in the first place.  相似文献

The extent and ecological significance of trophic linkages across ecosystem boundaries have been the subject of considerable recent research attention. North American beavers Castor canadensis engineer terrestrial influences in aquatic ecosystems by constructing terrestrial food caches near their lodges and aquatic influences in terrestrial ecosystems by building dams and flooding low lying areas. However, it is poorly resolved to what extent beavers rely on aquatic food sources and whether this reliance is greater during winter when ice cover physically confines beavers to aquatic habitats or during summer when warm, ice free water promotes the growth and accessibility of aquatic vegetation. Working in a subarctic region, we surveyed the abundance of aquatic and terrestrial food sources in and around lotic and lentic environments and estimated their contributions to beaver diets during open water and ice covered periods using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis of hair samples. Ponds had four times more aquatic vegetation than streams, but terrestrial habitats around ponds had less than half as much shrub cover as habitats adjacent to streams. Beaver diets in this subarctic environment are estimated to be comprised of 60 to 80% aquatic vegetation, with beavers occupying ponds consuming more aquatic vegetation in winter than beavers occupying streams, which rely more on terrestrial shrubs cached near their lodge. Collectively, these results show how the influence of physical barriers on ecosystem linkages can be modified by habitat‐ and season‐specific abundances of preferred resources and the potential for animals to consume food in ecosystems and seasons different from where and when the food was harvested.  相似文献

Semi‐aquatic mammals have secondarily returned to the aquatic environment, although they spend a major part of their life operating in air. Moving both on land, as well as in, and under water is challenging because such species are considered to be imperfectly adapted to both environments. We deployed accelerometers combined with a depth sensor to study the diving behavior of 12 free‐living Eurasian beavers Castor fiber in southeast Norway between 2009 and 2011 to examine the extent to which beavers conformed with mass‐dependent dive capacities, expecting them to be poorer than wholly aquatic species. Dives were generally shallow (<1 m) and of short duration (<30 s), suggesting that the majority of dives were aerobic. Dive parameters such as maximum diving depth, dive duration, and bottom phase duration were related to the effort during different dive phases and the maximum depth reached. During the descent, mean vectorial dynamic body acceleration (VeDBA—a proxy for movement power) was highest near the surface, probably due to increased upthrust linked to fur‐ and lung‐associated air. Inconsistently though, mean VeDBA underwater was highest during the ascent when this air would be expected to help drive the animals back to the surface. Higher movement costs during ascents may arise from transporting materials up, the air bubbling out of the fur, and/or the animals’ exhaling during the bottom phase of the dive. In a manner similar to other homeotherms, beavers extended both dive and bottom phase durations with diving depth. Deeper dives tended to have a longer bottom phase, although its duration was shortened with increased VeDBA during the bottom phase. Water temperature did not affect diving behavior. Overall, the beavers’ dive profile (depth, duration) was similar to other semi‐aquatic freshwater divers. However, beavers dived for only 2.8% of their active time, presumably because they do not rely on diving for food acquisition.  相似文献

Beavers act as important agents which regulate the transfer of matter and energy from land to water and vice versa. Nevertheless, despite many examples of the regulation of energy and matter flows by beavers, we cannot extrapolate the results and get an overall picture of the role of beavers as regulators of ecosystem processes. This can be explained by the strong contextual dependency of the results of their habitat-forming activity and by changes in their behavior after repopulating the habitat area. The peculiarities of their influence on the habitat were analyzed using the example of small rivers that were recently populated by beavers and small rivers where beavers had already been living for 60–80 years.  相似文献

Abstract: The traditional method of sex identification in beavers (Castor canadensis) by external palpation can be inaccurate. We tested 2 genetic methods for determining sex in beavers, the zinc-finger DNA marker and the Y chromosome-specific sex determining region (SRY) marker. The SRY marker identified sex correctly in 57 of 67 (85%) beavers, whereas the zinc-finger technique was successful less often in only 48 of 67 (72%) animals. Sex was correctly assigned by palpation for 21 of 27 beavers (78%). Beaver studies in which accurate sex identification is critical may benefit by verifying the sex of individuals using one or both of these molecular markers.  相似文献

Giardia cysts isolated from humans, beavers, mice, and muskrats were tested in cross-species transmission experiments for their ability to infect either beavers or muskrats. Giardia cysts, derived from multiple symptomatic human donors and used for inoculation of beavers or muskrats, were shown to be viable by incorporation of fluorogenic dyes, excystation, and their ability to produce infections in the Mongolian gerbil model. Inoculation of beavers with 5 x 10(5) Giardia lamblia cysts resulted in the infection of 75% of the animals (n = 8), as judged by the presence of fecal cysts or intestinal trophozoites at necropsy. The mean prepatent period was 13.1 days. An infective dose experiment, using 5 x 10(1) to 5 x 10(5) viable G. lamblia cysts collected by fluorescence-activated cell sorting, demonstrated that doses of between, less than 50, and less than 500 viable cysts were required to produce infection in beavers. Scanning electron microscopy of beaver small intestine revealed that attachment of G. lamblia trophozoites produced lesions in the microvillous border. Inoculation of muskrats with G. lamblia cysts produced infections when the dose of cysts was equal to or greater than 1.25 x 10(5). The inoculation of beavers with Giardia ondatrae or Giardia muris cysts did not produce any infection; however, the administration to muskrats of Giardia cysts of beaver origin resulted in the infection of 62% of the animals (n = 8), with a prepatent period of 5 days. Our results demonstrated that beavers and muskrats could be infected with Giardia cysts derived from humans, but only by using large numbers of cysts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In an age of invasions, it is critical to design and test management strategies to more efficiently control foreign species. Spatially explicit individual based models (SEIBMs) are a powerful tool to explore different management scenarios to control invaders, but we rarely have enough data to parameterize these models, particularly for relatively long-lived species. Here we take advantage of our previous work estimating demographic rates of invasive beavers in Patagonia, and develop an SEIBM to model the spread of beavers in Patagonia. We used our SEIBM both to estimate dispersal distances by fitting their observed rate of spread and to test how placing a buffer zone (a longitudinal strip of land perpendicular to the direction of spread within which a fraction of beavers are culled) beyond the invasion front would work as a control strategy. Specifically, we explored six different scenarios with two different culling rates and two buffer zone widths. We found that beavers in Patagonia must disperse long distances on average to account for the observed rate of spread, and thus our model predicts that a 100 km buffer zone will be needed to slow (but likely not halt) the spread of beavers. Interestingly, culling a higher proportion of beavers within a 100 km buffer zone (90 vs. 60%) did not improve buffer zone performance. Our study shows that wide buffer zones can slow (but likely not halt) continental spread of beavers in Patagonia and potentially pave the way for beaver eradication.  相似文献

Laser Marking Machine is the most common coding equipment on product packaging lines. However, the speed of laser marking has become a bottleneck of production. In order to remove this bottleneck, a new method based on a genetic algorithm is designed. On the basis of this algorithm, a controller was designed and simulations and experiments were performed. The results show that using this algorithm could effectively improve laser marking efficiency by 25%.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Beavers (Castor canadensis) are important in ecosystems and to humans. Although beavers are increasingly protected from harvest, relatively few studies of unexploited beaver populations have been reported. Furthermore, few radiotelemetry studies exist for beavers because no practical method of attaching a radiotransmitter to beavers was available until recently. We used radiotelemetry, remote videography, and trapping data to quantify survival, dispersal, and natality of unexploited beavers in southern Illinois, USA, during 2004 to 2006. Beaver colony density was one of the highest reported in the wildlife literature at 3.27 colonies/km2. We monitored 62 beavers for survival; all mortalities (n = 15) occurred during the fall and winter seasons. The pooled annual survival rate for adult and juvenile females was (x̄±SE) 0.76±0.05. Annual survival rates for adult and juvenile males were 0.87±0.04 and 0.55±0.07, respectively. Seasonal survival only differed among sex classes and age classes during the fall. Dispersal rates for juvenile beavers ranged from 0.38±0.13 to 0.59±0.13 and did not vary by sex or age. To quantify natality and recruitment, we captured and euthanized 79 beavers adjacent to our live-capture area; we found a low pregnancy rate of adult females (36%), and no juveniles were bred. Natality of bred females was 3.6 offspring per adult female, and 0.36 kits were recruited per adult female. Apparent kit survival was 28%. Our research provides information to wildlife managers about beaver demographics for a high-density population, based on relatively large sample sizes and novel research techniques for the species.  相似文献

On the basis of a conjugate of phalloidin-colloidal gold a marker has been obtained for electronmicroscopic identification and study of marking character of filament actins. Using this marker the filamentous form of actins from rabbit skeletal muscles and chicken gizzard was revealed. The marking characters of the two actins appeared to differ at the level of electron microscopy. A periodicity of the marker setting with a step of 105.4 +/- 1.7 nm on the rabbit F-actin was revealed. A possibility of differential evaluation of the filamentous and globular forms of the actins was shown when using the same marker in dot-blot analysis procedure with the sensitivity from 15 to 50 ng.  相似文献
