Total above-ground production isusually estimated by a combination of allometry andlitter collection. However, in coastal sites that aretidally influenced, or in juvenile or dwarf forestswhere the crown bases of dominant individuals maybegin within a few decimeters of ground level, estimates of community leaf production that depend onlitter collection may not be feasible. Thus, in thispaper, we present 1) allometric equations that allowaccurate estimation of total above-ground biomass ofthree mangrove species (Rhizophora mangle, Laguncularia racemosa, and Avicennia germinans)in very small to medium size classes, and 2) analternative method of estimating total above-groundproduction that overcomes the limitations of littercollection. The method we employ to estimate mangroveproductivity is an adaptation for woody plantcommunities of a procedure introduced by Dai andWeigert (1996) for grasslands. It incorporates adetailed census of all individuals within fixedsampling plots, along with periodic observations ofmarked leaf cohorts. The method allows the comparisonof biomass allocation patterns among forests thatdiffer widely in physiognomy and physiographicsetting. The method was applied to a South Florida fringemangrove forest in the early stages of recovery fromHurricane Andrew (August 1992), and an adjacent dwarfforest which was not substantially damaged by thestorm. Total above-ground production in the fringeforest from July 1996 through June 1997 was about 3times higher than dwarf forest production,26.1 Mg·ha-1·yr-1 vs.8.1 Mg·ha-1·yr-1, respectively. Furthermore, when compared to the dwarf forest, fringeproduction rates were approximately eight, six, six,and two times as high as dwarf forest rates forproproots, branches, stems, and leaves, respectively. Calculations of leaf production were based on mean redmangrove leaf longevities that ranged from about 189days to 281 days, depending on cohort and site.Repeated measures analysis of variance indicated thatleaf life spans did not differ significantly betweendwarf and fringe forests, but did differ among leafcohorts.Based on reported values for similar mangrove forests, the method provided reasonable estimates ofabove-ground biomass and production, while furnishingrelevant auxiliary information on spatial and temporalvariation in leaf demographic patterns. Furthermore, the partitioning of annual production between woodytissues and leaves followed the reported trend in mostforest ecosystems.  相似文献

Seedlings of the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle L., were subjected to a variety of salinity, light, and plant growth regulator treatments to examine the influence of these factors on early development. Stem, leaf, and root growth were significantly enhanced in both low salinity seawater and under reduced intensities of solar radiation. Semi-quantitative analyses of GAs by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbant assays (ELISA) suggest that under these conditions the early 3/13 hydroxylation GA1 biosynthetic pathway is predominant in R. mangle. Concentrations of GA1 and GA19-like substances were highest in propagules exhibiting enhanced development. Attempts to identify the endogenous GAs by GC-MS were unsuccessful, most likely due to undetermined impurities present in mangroves. Exogenous applications of GA3 to R. mangle were moderately successful in alleviating shoot growth inhibitions observed at higher salinities and light levels. The role of gibberellins is discussed in terms of metabolic responses to the external environment and possible impacts upon the distribution of this species.  相似文献

At Humingbird Cay, Exuma, Bahamas, distributions of bothRhizophora mangle (red mangrove) andAvicennia germinans (black mangrove) are closely correlated with amounts of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the soil.R. mangle is primarily distributed within large areas of low to moderate H2S concentrations (mean= 40 mg/l). H2S levels underA. germinans are lower (mean = 22 mg/l), but the area immediately beyond their root zone often has extremely high sulfide concentrations (mean= 120 mg/l). These results suggest that past attempts to explain mangrove distribution in terms of monotonic soil gradients, the dispersal characteristics of propagules, and interspecific competition are incomplete, and that it will be necessary to examine the link between soil sulfur chemistry and mangrove distribution more fully.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic data from the primary producers in mangrove ecosystems are needed to investigate trophic links and biogeochemical cycling. Compared with other mangrove species (e.g. Rhizophora mangle) very few measurements have been conducted on the white mangrove, Laguncularia racemosa. The carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic and elemental compositions of L. racemosa were analyzed and compared from Florida and Belize. 13C values of L. racemosa from Florida (mean = –26.4) were slightly higher than those from Twin Cays, Belize (mean = -27.4), which may be due to higher salinity in some parts of the Florida site. There was no difference between the 15N values from L. racemosa from these two sites (Florida mean = 0.6; Belize mean = 0.3), which are indicative of nitrogen derived from nitrogen fixation in a planktonic marine system. However, higher 15N values from L. racemosa at Man of War Cay in Belize (11.4 and 12.3), which is fertilized by roosting marine birds (14.0), illustrate that L. racemosa can sensitively reflect alternative nitrogen sources. Although the isotopic data could not distinguish between Avicennia germinans, R. mangle and L. racemosa in Belize the L. racemosa had considerably higher C/N ratios (46.5 – 116.1) compared with the Florida samples (42.2 – 76.0) or the other mangrove species. Unlike some previous findings from R. mangle, substrate characteristics (e.g. salinity, NH4 +, and H2S) were not related to the isotopic or elemental composition of L. racemosa. 13C, 15N and C/N were analyzed for ecosystem components from L. racemosa habitats at Twin Cays, including other plants (e.g. R. mangle, A. germinans and seagrass), detritus, microbial mats and sediments. Results from mass-balance calculations show that mangrove detritus composes very little of the sediment, which is principally composed of microbial biomass (80 – 90%). Detritus at some sites is also influenced by sources other than that from L. racemosa, including seagrass leaves.  相似文献

Abstract The growth and distribution of the two mangrove seedling species, Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. and Rhizophora stylosa Griff., were studied in the low-shore zone at three locations along two estuaries of Darwin Harbour to determine how growth varied along the estuary and within the habitats of the low shore zone. The low shore environment was heterogenous for factors such as salinity and light, with substantial variation within and between locations. Seedlings of Avicennia were in higher densities in light gaps than in the adjacent forest, and density in both habitats decreased towards the mouth of the estuary. Growth of Avicennia seedlings, as measured through in situ growth trials and plant harvests, increased towards the mouth of the estuary. Results for Rhizophora seedlings were more complex although some similar trends were evident. This may have been due to the greater early survival of Rhizophora seedlings compared to Avicennia seedlings. The importance of propagule origin was investigated, for Rhizophora, by transplanting propagules between locations along one estuary. Increased seedling survival was observed at the propagule source site; however, this effect was subtle and probably not the most important factor affecting seedling survival at a site.  相似文献

Mangroves, woody halophytes restricted to protected tropical coasts, form some of the most productive ecosystems in the world, but their capacity to act as a carbon source or sink under climate change is unknown. Their ability to adjust growth or to function as potential carbon sinks under conditions of rising atmospheric CO2 during global change may affect global carbon cycling, but as yet has not been investigated experimentally. Halophyte responses to CO2 doubling may be constrained by the need to use carbon conservatively under water-limited conditions, but data are lacking to issue general predictions. We describe the growth, architecture, biomass allocation, anatomy, and photosynthetic physiology of the predominant neotropical mangrove tree, Rhizophora mangle L., grown solitarily in ambient (350 ll–1) and double-ambient (700 ll–1) CO2 concentrations for over 1 year. Mangrove seedlings exhibited significantly increased biomass, total stem length, branching activity, and total leaf area in elevated CO2. Enhanced total plant biomass under high CO2 was associated with higher root:shoot ratios, relative growth rates, and net assimilation rates, but few allometric shifts were attributable to CO2 treatment independent of plant size. Maximal photosynthetic rates were enhanced among high-CO2 plants while stomatal conductances were lower, but the magnitude of the treatment difference declined over time, and high-CO2 seedlings showed a lower Pmax at 700 ll–1 CO2 than low-CO2 plants transferred to 700 ll–1 CO2: possible evidence of downregulation. The relative thicknesses of leaf cell layers were not affected by treatment. Stomatal density decreased as epidermal cells enlarged in elevated CO2. Foliar chlorophyll, nitrogen, and sodium concentrations were lower in high CO2. Mangroves grown in high CO2 were reproductive after only 1 year of growth (fully 2 years before they typically reproduce in the field), produced aerial roots, and showed extensive lignification of the main stem; hence, elevated CO2 appeared to accelerate maturation as well as growth. Data from this long-term study suggest that certain mangrove growth characters will change flexibly as atmospheric CO2 increases, and accord with responses previously shown in Rhizophora apiculata. Such results must be integrated with data from sea-level rise studies to yield predictions of mangrove performance under changing climate.  相似文献

Complex gradients in forest structure across the landscape of offshore mangrove islands in Belize are associated with nutrient deficiency and flooding. While nutrient availability can affect many ecological processes, here we investigate how N and P enrichment interact with forest structure in three distinct zones (fringe, transition, dwarf) to alter patterns of herbivory as a function of folivory, loss of yield, and tissue mining. The effects of nutrient addition and zone varied by functional feeding group or specific herbivore. Folivory ranged from 0 to 0.4% leaf area damaged per month, but rates did not vary by either nutrient enrichment or zone. Leaf lifetime damage ranged from 3 to 10% of the total leaf area and was caused primarily by the omnivorous tree crab Aratus pisonii. We detected two distinct spatial scales of response by A. pisonii that were unrelated to nutrient treatment, i.e., most feeding damage occurred in the fringe zone and crabs fed primarily on the oldest leaves in the canopy. Loss of yield caused by the bud moth Ecdytolopha sp. varied by zone but not by nutrient treatment. A periderm-mining Marmara sp. responded positively to nutrient enrichment and closely mirrored the growth response by Rhizophora mangle across the tree height gradient. In contrast, a leaf-mining Marmara sp. was controlled by parasitoids and predators that killed >89% of its larvae. Thus, nutrient availability altered patterns of herbivory of some but not all mangrove herbivores. These findings support the hypothesis that landscape heterogeneity of the biotic and abiotic environment has species-specific effects on community structure and trophic interactions. Predicting how herbivores respond to nutrient over-enrichment in mangrove ecosystems also requires an assessment of habitat heterogeneity coupled with feeding strategies and species-specific behavior measured on multiple scales of response.  相似文献

Background and Aims Rhizophora species of mangroves have a conspicuous system of stilt-like roots (rhizophores) that grow from the main stem and resemble flying buttresses. As such, the development of rhizophores can be predicted to be important for the effective transmission of dynamic loads from the top of the tree to the ground, especially where the substrate is unstable, as is often the case in the habitats where Rhizophora species typically grow. This study tests the hypothesis that rhizophore architecture in R. mangle co-varies with their proximity to the main stem, and with stem size and crown position. Methods The allometry and wood mechanical properties of R. mangle (red mangrove) trees growing in a mangrove basin forest within a coastal lagoon in Mexico were compared with those of coexisting, non-buttressed mangrove trees of Avicennia germinans. The anatomy of rhizophores was related to mechanical stress due to crown orientation (static load) and to prevailing winds (dynamic load) at the study site.Key Results Rhizophores buttressed between 10 and 33 % of tree height. There were significant and direct scaling relationships between the number, height and length of rhizophores vs. basal area, tree height and crown area. Wood mechanical resistance was significantly higher in the buttressed R. mangle (modulus of elasticity, MOE = 18·1 ± 2 GPa) than in A. germinans (MOE = 12·1 ± 0·5 GPa). Slenderness ratios (total height/stem diameter) were higher in R. mangle, but there were no interspecies differences in critical buckling height. When in proximity to the main stem, rhizophores had a lower length/height ratio, higher eccentricity and higher xylem/bark and pith proportions. However, there were no directional trends with regard to prevailing winds or tree leaning. Conclusions In comparison with A. germinans, a tree species with wide girth and flare at the base, R. mangle supports a thinner stem of higher mechanical resistance that is stabilized by rhizophores resembling flying buttresses. This provides a unique strategy to increase tree slenderness and height in the typically unstable substrate on which the trees grow, at a site that is subject to frequent storms.  相似文献

Fourteen microsatellite markers were isolated from the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle (Rhizophoraceae), a widely distributed mangrove plant in the New World and West Africa. The range of expected heterozygosity of these markers was 0.000–0.672 in the two populations of R. mangle. Cross-species testing was examined for five other species of Rhizophora, and Kandelia candel and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. All 14 markers could be amplified in R. samoensis, thirteen in R. racemosa, and six markers in all other species of Rhizophora. Our findings greatly increase the utility of these markers.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to study sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) seedling root density, distribution, and morphological development under NaCl and polyethylene glycol (PEG) stresses in relation to shoot growth and stomatal conductance. Plants were treated with 2 stress levels (– 0.12 and – 0.24 MPa) of NaCl and PEG 4000 for 7 months. Root observation chambers were used to monitor root growth and distribution under stressed and non-stressed conditions. Seedlings receiving NaCl or PEG treatments produced fewer roots and shallower root systems with 46 to 65% of the roots occurring in the top portion of the soil. Fibrous root weight per unit length was increased by 24 to 30% by PEG but was not significantly increased by NaCl.Root growth rate usually alternated with shoot growth in a 2-month cycle. This alternating pattern was not shifted by NaCl and PEG stresses. In all NaCl and PEG treatments, growth was depressed and stomatal conductance was reduced. Compared to controls, plants that received NaCl or PEG had smaller shoot and root dry weights, fewer leaves, shorter height, and fewer roots. Sodium chloride usually caused less damage than PEG to sour orange seedlings suggesting that NaCl and PEG acted through different mechanisms.Florida Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Series No. 9941.  相似文献

Excision and subsequent incubation of the apices (1 cm) of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedling roots in simple media severely reduced elongation from 28 mm·(24 h)-1 in intact roots to a maximum of 2 mm·(24 h)-1 in excised roots. The reduction in growth was accompanied by a loss of cell turgor in the growing zone but was correlated with a hardening of the cell walls in this region. Rheological properties were measured as percent extensibility (both plastic and elastic) using a tensiometer, and as instantaneous volumetric elastic modulus ( i) using the pressure probe. Excision decreased plastic and elastic properties with a half-time of some 60 min. Plastic extension was reduced from 2.5% to 0.9% and elastic from 4.8% to 2.6% for an 8-g load. By contrast, i was increased by excision. The observed reduction in root elongation rate was accompained by a reduction in mature cell length from 240 m to 40 m and a shortening of the zone of cell expansion.Symbol i instantaneous volumetric elastic modulus  相似文献

We present here a 4-year dataset (2001–2004) on the spatial and temporal patterns of aboveground net primary production (ANPP) by dominant primary producers (sawgrass, periphyton, mangroves, and seagrasses) along two transects in the oligotrophic Florida Everglades coastal landscape. The 17 sites of the Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research (FCE LTER) program are located along fresh-estuarine gradients in Shark River Slough (SRS) and Taylor River/C-111/Florida Bay (TS/Ph) basins that drain the western and southern Everglades, respectively. Within the SRS basin, sawgrass and periphyton ANPP did not differ significantly among sites but mangrove ANPP was highest at the site nearest the Gulf of Mexico. In the southern Everglades transect, there was a productivity peak in sawgrass and periphyton at the upper estuarine ecotone within Taylor River but no trends were observed in the C-111 Basin for either primary producer. Over the 4 years, average sawgrass ANPP in both basins ranged from 255 to 606 g m−2 year−1. Average periphyton productivity at SRS and TS/Ph was 17–68 g C m−2 year−1 and 342–10371 g C m−2 year−1, respectively. Mangrove productivity ranged from 340 g m−2 year−1 at Taylor River to 2208 g m−2 year−1 at the lower estuarine Shark River site. Average Thalassia testudinum productivity ranged from 91 to 396 g m−2 year−1 and was 4-fold greater at the site nearest the Gulf of Mexico than in eastern Florida Bay. There were no differences in periphyton productivity at Florida Bay. Interannual comparisons revealed no significant differences within each primary producer at either SRS or TS/Ph with the exception of sawgrass at SRS and the C−111 Basin. Future research will address difficulties in assessing and comparing ANPP of different primary producers along gradients as well as the significance of belowground production to the total productivity of this ecosystem.  相似文献

Two methods for estimating the size of the maize (Zea mays l.) root system from soil cores taken in the field were compared. The spatially weighed block method of estimation accounted for variation in root density by using 18 samples per plant which varied in distance from plant and soil depth. This method was compared to an estimation which averaged all of the 18 samples together. Both methods gave surprisingly similar estimates for total root growth. Increased root growth in the surface soil layers, due to tillage and N fertilization, did not impact on the estimation of total root growth. Total root length remained unchanged or increased with N fertilization, while root weight remained the same or decreased. Root mass per length decreased with N fertilization. The estimated size of the root system was used to calculate root:shoot weight ratios. The largest root:shoot ratio was found in the vegetative stage and decreased throughout the rest of the season. In this field experiment, the estimated size of the root system at 8 weeks after planting was not significantly different from the size at silking or harvest. Nitrogen fertilization significantly decreased the root:shoot weight ratio. However, tillage did not significantly change the ratio.  相似文献

Summary Termite mound densities in typical guinea savanna, Detarium, and grassland (boval) habitats in northern guinea savanna were determined by random quadratting of 2–3 sites in each habitat (100, 10x10 m quadrats per habitat). Dominant species in guinea savanna were T. geminatus (46 mounds ha-1) and T. oeconomus (21 mounds ha-1), in Detarium T. geminatus (59 mounds ha-1) and C. curtatus (45 mounds ha-1) and in boval C. curtatus (72 mounds ha-1) and T. geminatus (22 mounds ha-1). Only C. curtatus densities and total densities differed significantly between sites within habitats, but all species differed significantly in abundance between habitats. The composition of each community was related to general environment but no particular environmental variable was shown to be a major determinant of termite distribution. Evidence for the limitation of termite populations was obtained from indirect evidence of competition between colonies in Detarium, and by experimental manipulation of fire regimes in the typical guinea savanna habitat. Harvester termites increased four-five fold over two years in fire-protected plots as a result of increased food supplies. Total termite densities in the fire-protected community equilibrated to the new population density (100 mounds ha-1) after only two-three years.  相似文献

Summary The site of settlement of barnacles (Balanus improvisus) attached on shells of bluemussels (Mytilus edulis) was mapped from a sample of mussels collected in the Baltic Sea. Most barnacles had settled near the siphonal apertures of the mussel. An experiment was made to measure the disadvantages and advantages that living in close association brings to barnacles and mussels. The barnacles on shells of living mussels were shown to grow significantly faster than those on empty mussel shells. Presence of barnacles had no effects on growth of mussels. The two-species association under study was demonstrated to be a case of commensalism.  相似文献

The role of hoplonemerteans in the ecology of seagrass communities   总被引:4,自引:3,他引:1
Seagrasses of the world harbor a rich and varied fauna, but a review of the literature revealed that little has been done to evaluate the ecological importance of nemerteans in such communities. Monostiliferous hoplonemerteans are common inhabitants of some seagrasses, e.g. eelgrass (Zostera), but generally they are seldom collected or identified or are apparently absent in other species such as schoalgrass (Halodule) or turtlegrass (Thalassia). Nineteen species of hoplonemerteans (four families) have been identified from eelgrass beds around the world; they exist mainly as epifauna, and all except two species are probably suctorial feeders. Some palaeonemerteans (2 species) and heteronemerteans (4 species) are also associated with eelgrass, but mainly as infauna. Suctorial nemerteans (4 species in 3 families) from eelgrass beds located along the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States feed in the laboratory on a variety of amphipod species that inhabit eelgrass. Tubicolous species (e.g. Corophium) seem to be preferred. Zygonemertes virescens feeds on nine species of amphipods belonging to six families, and is the only species to feed on isopods (3 species). Analyses of field studies on the occurrence of hoplonemerteans in eelgrass beds in Virginia and New Jersey, along with available information on the food habits of these worms, were used as a basis for demonstrating their potential importance as predators of peracarids in seagrass systems. More careful methods for collecting and identifying worms, continued studies on food preferences and rates of predation, and emphasis on the population dynamics of worms and prey, are recommended in order to evaluate the role of suctorial hoplonemerteans in the ecology of seagrasses.  相似文献

Macaques are found both in broadleaf evergreen forest and in more variable habitats. The former group might be expected to be subject to less variability in their environment and hence to suffer lower rates of density independent mortality. Life history evolution models predict that species in such conditions will have lower rates of development and breeding than those found in more variable habitats where density independent mortality is high. This prediction is tested here by comparing the breeding and development rates of nine species of macaque. Although measures of developmental rate are not found to vary in a predictable way with habitat, measures of breeding rate do correlate with habitat categories used. As predicted, species that are found in more variable habitats tend to have higher birth rates and a higher intrinsic rate of natural increase than do species in more stable, forest habitats. Contrary to prediction selection does not always act to produce an early age at first reproduction in macaques living in seasonal environments. This is discussed with relation to physiological and environmental constraints.  相似文献

Cultivar and planting date effects on soybean root growth   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
To avoid late summer drought, soybean [Gylcine max (L) Merrill] producers in many southern and border states of the USA modify their cropping systems. Options include use of unadapted cultivars and changing planting dates. Because root function is important to plant health and yield, this study was conducted to determine if planting date and soybean cultivar affect root growth and distribution. Seeds of one cultivar from each of four maturity groups (MG III, IV, V, and VI) were sown in mid-April, mid-May, and mid-June in 1992 and 1993 on a Tiptonville silt loam near Portageville, MO. Root observations were performed 30 and 60 days after emergence (DAE) using a minirhizotron system. Cultivars differed for root length density (RLD) only in the 15 to 28 cm depth in 1992 and in the 15 to 28 cm and 29 to 42 cm depths in 1993, but differences were not related to maturity classification of cultivar. Average RLD was 1.02 cm–3 for MG III and IV cultivars and 1.21 cm cm–3 for MG V and VI cultivars. Average RLD for the mid-June planting date was 1.65 cm cm–3 but only 0.73 cm cm–3 for the mid-April planting date. An increase in RLD between 30 and 60 DAE occurred at all soil depths. For both years, MG V and VI cultivars produced higher yields than the MG III cultivars. Earlier than normal planting dates inhibited early root growth, but did not reduce yield. Cultivars differed only slightly for the rooting characteristics measured in this study. These rooting characteristics may not be important criteria for cultivar selection.Abbreviations MG maturity group - VCR videocassette recorder - DAE days after emergence - RLD root length density - CRLD change in root length density Contribution from the Missouri Agric. The influence of carbohydrates on ammonium uptake and ammonium transporter (AMT1) expression was investigated in roots of field pea (Pisum arvense) and rutabaga (Brassica napus var. rapifera). Ammonium transport into field pea seedlings diminished markedly following cotyledon removal, which indicated that uptake of ammonium was under control of reserves stored in the cotyledons. Excision of cotyledons decreased also the level of some amino acids, glucose and total reducing sugars in field pea roots. To investigate the importance of the sugar supply for the regulation of ammonium uptake at low external NH 4 + level, 1 mM glucose or sucrose was supplied for several hours to the field pea seedlings deprived cotyledons or to intact rutabaga plants. Supply of both sugars resulted in a substantial increase in ammonium uptake by both plant species and enhanced markedly the expression of AMT1 in rutabaga roots. The results indicate that sugars may regulate ammonium transport at the genetic level.  相似文献
