Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is the leading vegetable grown and consumed in the Philippines, and the eggplant leafhopper is one of its most important insect pests. Nine local populations of leafhopper infesting eggplants were collected from major eggplant growing areas in Luzon Island to determine if these populations are constituted singly or by different species and to assess the level of variability among them. Morphological analysis of the adult male abdominal and genital traits and partial mitochondrial COI gene sequence identified the eggplant leafhopper populations in Luzon Island as belonging to Amrasca (=Sundapteryx) biguttula (Ishida) (Hemiptera:Cicadelliae). Observed male specimens exhibited modifications in the pregenital abdominal tergites VII and VIII that were previously reported to not be found in other Amrasca species. Principal Component Analysis of four morphometric genital traits revealed high similarity among the leafhopper populations regardless of eggplant production areas. Partial COI sequence analysis idenfitied 11 sequence variants (haplotypes), with one predominant haplotype. Overall, the leafhopper populations from Luzon Island exhibited moderate haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity, indicating low genetic diversity. Topologies from a maximum likelihood tree indicate all eleven haplotypes cluster in a single clade with other A. biguttula infesting cotton and potato in India, but the Philippine population forms a separate subgroup although with weak bootstrap support. Further analysis with the Generalized Mixed Yule Coalescent (GMYC) method classified the different haplotypes into a single GMYC entity. 相似文献

The natural populations of Dactylorhiza hatagirea have been greatly affected due to incessant exploitation. As such, studies on its population attributes together with habitat suitability and environmental factors affecting its distribution are needed to be undertaken for its conservation in nature. Present study aimed at accessing an impact of anthropogenic pressure on population structure and locate suitable habitats for the conservation of this critically endangered orchid. Considerable changes in the phytosociological attributes were observed on account of the changing magnitude and extent of anthropogenic threat in their natural abode. The distribution pattern of species indicated that more than 90% of the populations exhibit substantially aggregated spatial distribution. Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) distribution modelling algorithm was used to predict suitable habitat and potential area for its cultivation and reintroduction. Twenty-seven occurrence records, nineteen bioclimatic variables, altitude, and slope were used. MaxEnt map output gave the habitat suitability for this species and predicted its distribution in the North-Western Himalayas of India for approximately 616 km2. Jackknifing indicated that maximum temperature of warmest month, annual mean temperature, mean temperature of the driest quarter, and mean temperature of the wettest quarter were the governing factors for its distribution and hence, presented a higher gain with respect to other variables. According to permutation importance, precipitation seasonality and mean temperature of wettest quarter shows the prominent impact on the habitat distribution. Results of AUC (area under curve) were statistically significant (0.940) and the line of predicted omission falls very close to an omission on training samples, validating a better run of the model. Response curves revealed a probable increase in the occurrence of D. hatagirea with an increase in mean temperature of the wettest quarter and maximum temperature of the warmest month contributed more than 50% to predicted habitat suitability. Direct field observations concurrent with predicted habitat suitability and google-earth images represent greater model thresholds for successful inception of the species. Together, the study proposes that the species can be conserved in or near its present-day natural habitats and is equally effective in determining the possible habitats for its cultivation and reintroduction. 相似文献

Natural resource managers face the challenge of developing conservation plans for key species and given that anthropogenic climate change (CC) effects on biodiversity are becoming increasingly evident, the new challenge is to properly incorporate CC adaptation strategies into such plans. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the potential CC effects on the climatically suitable areas for two Colombian endemic titi monkeys Plecturocebus ornatus and P. caquetensis and to identify the prospective climate refugia as macro-ecological adaptation strategies for each species. A detailed ecological niche modeling (ENM) approach was applied with the maximum entropy algorithm, using presence records and different sets of bioclimatic variables describing baseline (1960–1990) and future climates (∼2070). Models of future climatic suitability were generated using projections of variables under a stabilization (RCP4.5) and business as usual (RCP8.5) scenarios with data from two general circulation models (GCMs) describing storylines of increasing (CESM1_CAM5) and decreasing (CSIRO_ACCESS1_3) rainfall patterns. The results for both species indicate that in a warmer future, opposite rainfall patterns and choice of the bioclimatic variables may lead to divergent responses on the extent and geographic distribution of their climatic niche, which varied from regions gaining, losing, and retaining suitability in potential climate refugia. Moreover, CC represents a serious threat for P. caquetensis and P. ornatus since their ranges may be largely exposed to novel climates. Their baseline climatic suitability area is projected to shrink and shift to higher elevations in the Andes mountains, and the climate refugia identified for both species are poorly covered by protected areas. Therefore, the climate refugia identified in this work and the management recommendations offered should be considered by species conservation plans to contribute to the selection of priority regions for conservation actions. The modeling approach reveals the uncertainties arising from the selection of bioclimatic variables and GCMs in ENM, which can be replicated to identify climate refugia targeting different species of conservation concern. 相似文献

The Forest Stewardship Council developed the concept of High Conservation Values (HCVs) as a criteria in the forest certification process in order to promote sustainable forest management. It has six major components or values and component one and two of HCVs deal with the habitat for viable populations of “rare, endemic and threatened (RET) species” using the IUCN Red List category and other national / regional / local lists. But a consistent robust methodology for identification of these areas, does not exist. The present study tried to develop for the first time, a straight forward inclusive methodology for identification of HCVAs for the RET species on a spatio-temporal scale. A total of 50 RET and other significant species (32 flora, 10 fauna and 8 avifauna) were identified after a thorough literature review, field surveys and consultations with experts. Occurrence data of the selected species was collected from different secondary sources, field surveys, institutes and scientists who have worked on them. A 10 km grid-based approach and stratified random sampling was used for the primary GPS field surveys conducted during 2018–2019. MaxEnt species distribution model (SDM) software was used based on the occurrence data and environmental variables for identification of potential suitable habitats for the selected species. Linear support vector machine (LSVM) model was used for assessing the performance of the SDMs. The performance of each SDM has been validated through Cohen's Kappa (KAPPA), true skill statistic (TSS) and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) models. The proposed methodology addresses the urgent need for a holistic and robust set of techniques to apply the HCV toolkit. This is key to identify and map HCVAs for RET species at the landscape level and can be easily adapted to and adopted at the national, regional, state or local level in India. The methods offer an efficient, reliable approach for the application of the HCV concept, elsewhere in the world. 相似文献

Sunflower occupies the fourth position among oilseed crops the around the world. Eceriferum (CER) is an important gene family that plays critical role in very-long-chain fatty acids elongation and biosynthesis of epicuticular waxes under both biotic and abiotic stress conditions. The aim of present study was to investigate the effect of sunflower CER genes during drought stress condition. Thus, comparative analysis was undertaken for sunflower CER genes with Arabidopsis genome to determine phylogenetic relationship, chromosomal mapping, gene structures, gene ontology and conserved motifs. Furthermore, we subjected the sunflower cultivars under drought stress and used qRT-PCR analysis to explore the expression pattern of CER genes during drought conditions. We identified thirty-seven unevenly distributed CER genes in the sunflower genome. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that CER genes were grouped into seven clades in Arabidopsis, Helianthus annuus, and Gossypium hirsutum. Expression analysis showed that genes CER10 and CER60 were upregulated in sunflower during drought conditions, indicating that these genes are activated during drought stress. The results obtained will serve to characterize the CER gene family in sunflower and exploit the role of these genes in wax biosynthesis under limited water conditions.Key messageCuticular waxes protect the plants from drought stress, so we observed the expression of wax bio synthesis genes in recently sequences genome of Helianthus annuus. BackgroundAlthough immunotherapy greatly extends overall survival (OS) of patients with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC), a number of patients develop immunotherapy resistance (IR). Patterns of failure in ES-SCLC are not clarified. Our study aims to explore the clinical pattern of IR and prognostic factors for these patients.MethodsThe study was conducted from 117 ES-SCLC patients with immunotherapy between 2018 and 2022. Chi-square tests and Fishers' exact tests was used to explore failure patterns in different populations. Survival analyses of different progression patterns and subsequent treatment regimens were conducted by Kaplan–Meier curves and log-rank test.Results86 (73.5%) patients experienced IR. The patients with smoking (never smoker vs. current or ex-smoker, 59.5 % vs. 81.3%, P = 0.010), liver metastasis (extrahepatic metastasis vs. intrahepatic metastasis, 73.6 % vs. 90.9%, P = 0.050), and distant metastasis status (no distant metastasis vs. distant metastasis, 39.1 % vs. 81.9%, P<0.001) were associated with IR rates. Liver progression had a lower incidence in 1st line immunotherapy (1st line vs. ≥2nd lines, 14.0 % vs. 41.7%, P = 0.004) and a higher incidence in multiple progression (multiple progression vs. Oligo-progression, 39.4 % vs. 17.0%, P = 0.021). Cranial (41.7 % vs. 16.1%, P = 0.012) and distant lymph node (16.7 % vs. 3.2%, P = 0.049) progression were the main failure model for acquired IR in comparison to primary IR. Patients with new lesion progression only (17.73 vs. 9.17 months, P = 0.013) and non-hepatic progression (14.23 vs. 11.67 months, P = 0.042) had a longer OS. Patients in cross-line immunotherapy after IR had a favourable prognosis (17.07 vs. 11.93 months, P = 0.007).ConclusionThe most common failure pattern of immunotherapy for ES-SCLC was lung and regional lymph node progression. Brain and liver progression were the most common extra thoracic failure sites for 1st line and 2nd and more lines immunotherapy, respectively. There was a higher probability of primary IR in 2 lines and above immunotherapy. Patients with new only progression site and cross-line rechallenge immunotherapy had a better prognosis. 相似文献

Aberrant hedgehog (Hh) pathway signaling is implicated in multiple cancer types and targeting the Smoothened (SMO) receptor, a key protein of the Hh pathway, has proven effective in treating metastasized basal cell carcinoma. Our lead optimization effort focused on a series of heteroarylamides. We observed that a methyl substitution ortho to the heteroaryl groups on an aniline core significantly improved the potency of this series of compounds. These findings predated the availability of SMO crystal structure in 2013. Here we retrospectively applied quantum mechanics calculations to demonstrate the o-Me substitution favors the bioactive conformation by inducing a dihedral twist between the heteroaryl rings and the core aniline. The o-Me also makes favorable hydrophobic interactions with key residue side chains in the binding pocket. From this effort, two compounds (AZD8542 and AZD7254) showed excellent pharmacokinetics across multiple preclinical species and demonstrated in vivo activity in abrogating the Hh paracrine pathway as well as anti- tumor effects. 相似文献

Bacteria within the phylum Planctomycetota are biologically relevant due to unique characteristics among prokaryotes. Members of the genus Rhodopirellula can be abundant in marine habitats, however, only six species are currently validly described. In this study, we expand the explored genus diversity by formally describing a novel species. The pink-coloured strain ICT_H3.1T was isolated from brackish sediments collected in the Tagus estuary (Portugal) and a 16S rRNA gene sequence-based analysis placed this strain into the genus Rhodopirellula (family Pirellulaceae). The closest type strain is Rhodopirellula rubra LF2T, suggested by a similarity of 98.4% of the 16S rRNA gene sequence. Strain ICT_H3.1T is heterotrophic, aerobic and able to grow under microaerobic conditions. The strain grows between 15 and 37 °C, over a range of pH 6.5 to 11.0 and from 1 to 8% (w/v) NaCl. Several nitrogen and carbon sources were utilized by the novel isolate. Cells have an elongated pear-shape with 2.0 ± 0.3 × 0.9 ± 0.2 µm in size. Cells of strain ICT_H3.1T cluster in rosettes through a holdfast structure and divide by budding. Younger cells are motile. Ultrathin cell sections show cytoplasmic membrane invaginations and polar fimbriae. The genome size is 9,072,081 base pairs with a DNA G + C content of 56.1 mol%. Genomic, physiological and morphological comparison of strain ICT_H3.1T with its relatives suggest that it belongs to a novel species within the genus Rhodopirellula. Xanthones C-glycosides are plants secondary metabolites with diverse biological activities. Among the C-glycoside xanthones, the mangiferin (MF) is of widespread occurrence in plants while isomangiferin (IsoMF) is not very common. For the present study mangiferin (MF) and isomangiferin (IsoMF) were isolated from Dryopteris ramosa. The antibacterial potential of MF and IsoMF was evaluated by using agar well diffusion method while cytotoxic properties of MF and IsoMF were assessed by brine shrimp lethality test (BSLT). The antibacterial potential of MF and IsoMF increases in dose dependent manner. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) indicated strong antibacterial potential of MF against Salmonella setubal (125 µg/mL) and Bacillus subtilis (125 µg/mL) while MF showed weak antibacterial potential against Escherichia coli (500 µg/mL). On the other hand the IsoMF showed better antibacterial potential against all the tested strain including Escherichia coli (MIC = 250 µg/mL). The MF and IsoMF showed poor cytotoxicity towards Brine shrimp nauplii as indicated by their LD50 (969.77 ± 0.67 and 768.92 ± 0.81 µg/mL respectively). The present study has highlighted the antibacterial potential of MF and IsoMF. Further evaluation of these two isomeric compounds may prove to be the future remedies for various bacterial infections and other human ailments. 相似文献

Endosymbionts have gained prominence as a potential tool for biological control strategies in reducing vector-borne diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of Arsenophonus, Spiroplasma, and Rickettsia endosymbionts in wild specimens of phlebotomine sand flies, as well as in culicids collected in different regions of Colombia. Analyses were conducted through conventional PCR, Sanger sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, and phylogenetic analyses. Individuals from among 946 phlebotomine sand flies and 143 mosquitoes were selected for taxonomic identification confirmed through the analysis of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene sequences. Results showed the presence of Arsenophonus bacteria in samples of Lutzomyia longipalpis, Psychodopygus panamensis, and Pintomyia evansi. Arsenophonus sequences associated with Lu. longipalpis and Ps. panamensis are phylogenetically located near to sequences of louse flies, with K2P genetic distances of 0.006. In contrast, sequences obtained from Pi. evansi are phylogenetically located near Arsenophonus nasoniae (K2P 0.001–0.014). Other sequences of endosymbionts similar to Arsenophonus with high K2P genetic distances (0.056–0.097), when compared to different reference strains of this endosymbiont, were also found in other samples of Lu. longipalpis and Ae. aegypti. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first successful attempt to detect and elucidate the phylogenetic relationship of Arsenophonus in phlebotomine sand flies, yet its role within these insect vectors remains to be fully determined; therefore, the importance of entomological surveys that help better understand its behavior and potential use as a control agent is required to enable the proactive reduction of sand fly populations. 相似文献

Shoot flies (Atherigona spp.) are the members of muscidae family which have got economic importance as pest of several crops of Gramineae family mostly cereals and millets. One of the most effective management strategies for controlling shoot fly is the use of resistant wheat cultivars carrying specific resistant traits. Among thirty wheat genotypes screened at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad-Karnataka (India), two advanced germplasms UAS BW-12417 and UAS BW-11110 recorded least oviposition and dead heart due to shoot fly and found to be less preferred by Atherigona approximata Malloch. The morphological traits of different wheat genotypes revealed a significant negative correlation of shoot fly oviposition and dead heart with leaf length, leaf length to breadth ratio, seedling height, average seedling growth rate, seedling vigour, leaf glossiness and trichome density of wheat leaves, which indicated the enhanced shoot fly infestation as decrease in the values of above-mentioned morphological traits. Meanwhile, increase in leaf breadth and leaf area of wheat genotype aggrandised the oviposition and dead heart damage by shoot fly. Under the changing climate where, the minor insect pests attaining major pest status, the present investigation would pave way for breeders to tailor future breeding programmes to evolve shoot fly resistant hybrids with high yielding traits. 相似文献

Natural compounds (NC) are an important source of anticancer drugs. The genomic DNA of tumor cells is a major target of conventional anticancer therapeutics (cAT). DNA damage elicits a complex stress response programme termed DNA damage response (DDR), with the PI3-like kinase ATM and ATR being the key regulators. Since the DDR coordinates mechanisms of DNA repair and apoptosis, hence regulating the balance between death and survival, it is an attractive target of novel anticancer strategies. The aim of the study was to identify natural compounds derived from endophytic fungi, lichens, marine sponges or plants that interfere with mechanisms of the DDR. To this end, the cytotoxic and DDR modulating potency of 296 natural compounds, used alone or in combination with the cAT cisplatin (Cis) and doxorubicin (Doxo) was investigated by fluorescence-based analysis of the ATM/ATR-catalyzed S139 phosphorylation of histone 2AX (γH2AX), a surrogate marker of DNA damage-triggered DDR. After initial screening, a total of ten natural compounds were identified that were toxic in pancreatic carcinoma cells and activated the DDR on their own and/or promoted the DDR if used in combination with cAT. Their mode of action was shown to be independent of drug transport mechanisms. Based on their chemical structures, DDR modulatory activity and published data we suggest the marine NC 5-epi-nakijiquinone Q and 5-epi-ilimaquinone as well as the fungal compound secalonic acid F as most promising NC-based drug candidates for future synthesis of DDR-modulating chemical derivatives and their preclinical in vitro and in vivo testing. 相似文献

Background and purposeThe aim was to evaluate dosimetric uncertainties of a mixed beam approach for patients with high-risk prostate cancer (PCa). The treatment consists of a carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) boost followed by whole-pelvis intensity-modulated RT (IMRT).Materials and methodsPatients were treated with a CIRT boost of 16.6 Gy/4 fractions followed by whole-pelvis IMRT of 50 Gy/25 fractions, with consequent long term androgen deprivation therapy. Deformable computed tomography image registration (DIR) was performed and corresponding doses were used for plan sum. A comparative IMRT photon plan was obtained as whole-pelvis IMRT of 50 Gy/25 fractions followed by a boost of 28 Gy/14 fractions. DIR performances were evaluated through structure-related and image characteristics parameters.ResultsUntil now, five patients out of ten total enrolled ended the treatment. Dosimetric parameters were lower in CIRT + IMRT than IMRT-only plans for all organs at risk (OARs) except femoral heads.Regarding DIR evaluation, femoral heads were the less deformed OAR. Penile bulb, bladder and anal canal showed intermediate deformation. Rectum was the most deformed. DIR algorithms were patient (P)-dependent, as performances were the highest for P3 and P4, intermediate for P2 and P5, and the lowest for P1.ConclusionsCIRT allows better OARs sparing while increasing the efficacy due to the higher radio-biological effect of carbon ions. However, a mixed beam approach could introduce DIR problems in multi-centric treatments with different operative protocols. The development of this prospective trial will lead to more mature data concerning the clinical impact of implementing DIR procedures in dose accumulation applications for high-risk PCa treatments. 相似文献

Membranes form the first line of defence of bacteria against potentially harmful molecules in the surrounding environment. Understanding the protective properties of these membranes represents an important step towards development of targeted anti-bacterial agents such as sanitizers. Use of propanol, isopropanol and chlorhexidine can significantly decrease the threat imposed by bacteria in the face of growing anti-bacterial resistance via mechanisms that include membrane disruption. Here we have employed molecular dynamics simulations and nuclear magnetic resonance to explore the impact of chlorhexidine and alcohol on the S. aureus cell membrane, as well as the E. coli inner and outer membranes. We identify how sanitizer components partition into these bacterial membranes, and show that chlorhexidine is instrumental in this process. 相似文献

Kukoamines are polyamine alkaloids present in Cortex Lycii (LyC), which is the root bark of Lycium chinense Mill. or L. barbarum L. Environmental conditions and geographical distribution influence the biosynthesis and accumulation of Kukoamines in Lycium species, thus directly affecting the quality of LyC. To identify the factors that influence Kukoamine A (KuA) and Kukoamine B (KuB) accumulation, the KuA and KuB contents of L. chinense and L. barbarum LyC collected from different areas or potted L. barbarum LyC with soil collected from different areas were measured, and the correlation of Kukoamine contents with meteorological factors and soil constituents were analyzed. In both L. barbarum and L. chinense, the KuA and KuB contents of LyC planted in Zhongning were significantly higher than those of LyC planted in other areas. Three L. barbarum species planted in soil collected from different areas presented significant difference in the KuA and KuB content of LyC. The contents of both KuA and KuB showed negative correlation with annual precipitation, mean temperature, and mean humidity, while positively correlated with soil pH, altitude, mean diurnal temperature difference, and annual sunshine hours, but there was no significant correlation with any soil compositions. It might be illustrated that soil pH and meteorological factors are important aspects affecting the quality of LyC. 相似文献

A 105-day experimental trial was conducted to assess different levels of dietary Aleo vera extract supplementation on water quality parameters, proximate composition, growth performance and haematological parameters of fry Oreochromis niloticus. Four different percentages of dietary leaf extract powder of Aleo vera (ALE) with a basal feed, designated as, i.e., T0 (Control group; without ALE), T1 (1% ALE), T2 (2% ALE), and T3 (3% ALE). Fish fry was reared in concrete tanks (7.0 m, 1.6 m, 1.0: L, W, H; water volume 11.2 m3/tank), with an average initial weight 4.04 ± 0.03 g/ fry, and each treatment was triplicated. Fry was randomly distributed at a stocking rate of 450 individuals/ tanks. The water quality parameters revealed that temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO) and nitrates were found in a promising range as given by FAO/WHO limits. However, the record values obtained for Electric Conductivity (EC), Total dissolved solids (TDS), and alkalinities were not found in all tanks' suitable range according to FAO/WHO limits. The results revealed a significant impact of different percentages of dietary ALE supplementation on fry's body composition and haematological parameters. Moreover, the final body weight, final body length, average daily weight gain (g), net weight gain (g) and specific growth rate (%) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in T1 and T2 compared with T0 and T3 treatments. The poorest feed conversion ratio was recorded in the T2 group compared with other treatments. Thus, the current study provides information about the nutritional quality of Nile tilapia culturing in Pakistan. 相似文献

Avoidable or inappropriate nitrogen (N) fertilizer rates harmfully affect the yield production and ecological value. Therefore, the aims of this study were to optimize the rate and timings of N fertilizer to maximize yield components and photosynthetic parameter of soybean. This field experiment consists of five fertilizer N rates: 0, 75, 150, 225 and 300 kg N ha−1 arranged in main plots and four N fertilization timings: V5 (trifoliate leaf), R2 (full flowering stage) and R4 (full poding stage), and R6 (full seeding stage) growth stages organized as subplots. Results revealed that 225 kg N ha−1 significantly enhanced grain yield components, total chlorophyll (Chl), photosynthetic rate (PN), and total dry biomass and N accumulation by 20%, 16%, 28%, 7% and 12% at R4 stage of soybean. However, stomatal conductance (gs), leaf area index (LAI), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) and transpiration rate (E) were increased by 12%, 88%, 10%, 18% at R6 stage under 225 kg N ha−1. Grain yield was significantly associated with photosynthetic characteristics of soybean. In conclusion, the amount of nitrogen 225 kg ha−1 at R4 and R6 stages effectively promoted the yield components and photosynthetic characteristics of soybean. 相似文献

Analysis through logistic regression explored to investigate the relationship between binary or multivariable ordinal response probability and in one or more explanatory variables. The main objectives of this study to investigate advanced prediction risk factor of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) using a logit model. Attempts made to reduce risk factors, increase public or professional awareness. Logit model used to evaluate the probability of a person develop CHD, considering any factors such as age, gender, high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, high blood pressure, family history of CHD younger than 45, diabetes, smoking, being post-menopausal for women and being older than 45 for men. Logit concept of brief statistics described with slight modification to estimate the parameters testing for the significance of the coefficients, confidence interval fits the simple, multiple logit models. Besides, interpretation of the fitted logit regression model introduced. Variables showing best results within the scientific context, good explanation data assessed to fit an estimated logit model containing chosen variables, this present experiment used the statistical inference procedure; chi-square distribution, likelihood ratio, Score, or Wald test and goodness-of-fit. Health promotion started with increased public or professional awareness improved for early detection of CHD, to reduce the risk of mortality, aimed to be Saudi vision by 2030. 相似文献

Duckweed is recognized as a phytoremediation aquatic plant due to the production of large biomass and a high level of tolerance in stressed conditions. A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate antioxidant response and mechanism of copper and mercury tolerance of S. polyrhiza (L.) Schleid. To understand the changes in chlorophyll content, MDA, proline, and activities of ROS-scavenging enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPOD) during the accumulation of Cu+2 and Hg+2, S. polyrhiza were exposed to various concentrations of Cu+2 (0.0–40 μM) and Hg+2 (0.0–0.4 μM). antioxidant activity initially indicated enhancing trend with application of 10 μM Cu+2; 0.2 μM Hg+2 (SOD), of 20 μM Cu+2; 0.2 μM Hg+2 (CAT) and of 10 μM Cu+2;0.2 μM Hg+2 (GPOD) and then decreased consistently up to 40 μM Cu+2 and 0.4 μM Hg+2. In the experiment chlorophyll and frond multiplication initially showed increasing tendency and decreased gradually with the application of increased metal concentration. Application of heavy metal has constantly enhanced proline and MDA content while the maximum increase was observed with the application of 40 μM Cu; 0.4 μM Hg for proline and MDA respectively. The upregulation of antioxidant enzymes and proline reveals that S. polyrhiza has strong biochemical strategies to deal with the heavy metal toxicity induced by the accumulation of Cu+2 and Hg+2. 相似文献
