It requires the identification of a cell or group of cells and of all of their descendants during embryonic development. Resistance to pathogens is one of the most ancient traits; mechanisms for discriminating self from non-self have evolved to accomplish this task. Animal and plant immune systems use a set of similar receptors to recognize pathogens. These receptors are located either at the cell surface or inside the cell. Kinases modulate further signalling and are either associated to the receptors or are part of the receptors themselves. In this review, we compare gene families and the nucleotide binding (NB) and the Toll-interleukin-1 receptor (TIR) domains of various kingdoms that are important for the immune systems. Possibilities to deconstruct and reconstruct evolutionary events contributing to the immune systems are explored together with functional aspects. 相似文献

It has been difficult to infer the genetic history of avocado breeding, owing to the role of hybridization in the origin of contemporary avocado cultivars. To address this difficulty, we used the model-based clustering program, STRUCTURE, and nucleotide polymorphism in 5960 bp of sequence from 4 nuclear loci to examine population structure in 21 wild avocado accessions. The origins of 33 cultivars were inferred relative to the wild sample. Nucleotide sequence diversity in domesticated avocados ranged between 80% and 90% of that observed for the same loci in wild avocado, depending on the diversity statistic used for comparison. Substantial genetic differentiation among 3 geographic groups of wild germplasm corresponded to the classically defined horticultural races of avocado. Previously undetected genetic differentiation was revealed in wild populations from Central Mexico, where 2 subpopulations were distinguished based on elevation and latitude. 相似文献

Centrioles/basal bodies (CBBs) are microtubule-based cylindrical organelles that nucleate the formation of centrosomes, cilia, and flagella. CBBs, cilia, and flagella are ancestral structures; they are present in all major eukaryotic groups. Despite the conservation of their core structure, there is variability in their architecture, function, and biogenesis. Founder analysis is a method for analysis of nonrecombining DNA sequence data, with the aim of identification and dating of migrations into new territory. The method picks out founder sequence types in potential source populations and dates lineage clusters deriving from them in the settlement zone of interest. Here, using mtDNA, we apply the approach to the colonization of Europe, to estimate the proportion of modern lineages whose ancestors arrived during each major phase of settlement. To estimate the Palaeolithic and Neolithic contributions to European mtDNA diversity more accurately than was previously achievable, we have now extended the Near Eastern, European, and northern-Caucasus databases to 1,234, 2, 804, and 208 samples, respectively. Both back-migration into the source population and recurrent mutation in the source and derived populations represent major obstacles to this approach. We have developed phylogenetic criteria to take account of both these factors, and we suggest a way to account for multiple dispersals of common sequence types. We conclude that (i) there has been substantial back-migration into the Near East, (ii) the majority of extant mtDNA lineages entered Europe in several waves during the Upper Palaeolithic, (iii) there was a founder effect or bottleneck associated with the Last Glacial Maximum, 20,000 years ago, from which derives the largest fraction of surviving lineages, and (iv) the immigrant Neolithic component is likely to comprise less than one-quarter of the mtDNA pool of modern Europeans. 相似文献

for a complex structure of the ancestral population that led to the emergence of modern humans. We sequenced DXS1238 in 600
X-chromosomes from all over the world. Forty four percent of African-specific chromosomes belong to the ancestral lineage
that did not participate in the out-of-Africa expansion and subsequent colonization of other continents. Based on the coalescence
analysis these lineages separated from those that contributed to the out-of-Africa expansion 366 ± 136 thousands years ago
(Kya). Independently, the analysis of the variance in the repeat length and of the decay of the ancestral alleles of the two
DXS1238 repeats, GT and GA, dates this separation at more than 200 Kya. This suggests a complex demographic history and genetic
structure of the African melting pot that led to the emergence of modern humans and their out-of-Africa migration. The subsequent
subdivisions of human populations among different continents appear to be preceded by even more structured population history
within Africa itself, which resulted from a restricted gene flow between lineages allowing for genetic differences to accumulate.
If the transition to modern humans occurred during that time, it necessarily follows that genes associated with this transformation
spread between subpopulations via gene flow. Otherwise, in spite of subsequent anatomical variation, Homo sapiens as a species could have emerged in Africa already between 300 and 200 Kya, i.e. before the mitochondrial DNA and well before
the Y-chromosome most recent common ancestors.

A recently identified GTPase, elongation factor-like (EFL) protein is proposed to bear the principal functions of translation elongation factor 1alpha (EF-1alpha). Pioneering studies of EF-1alpha/EFL evolution have revealed the phylogenetically scattered distribution of EFL amongst eukaryotes, suggesting frequent eukaryote-to-eukaryote EFL gene transfer events and subsequent replacements of EF-1alpha functions by EFL. We here determined/identified seven new EFL sequences of the photosynthetic cryptomonad Cryptomonas ovata, the non-photosynthetic cryptomonad (goniomonad) Goniomonas amphinema, the foraminifer Planoglabratella opecularis, the haptophyte Chrysochromulina sp., the centroheliozoan Raphidiophrys contractilis, and two red algae Chondrus crispus and Gracilaria changii. The analyses of these EFL sequences successfully brought new insights into lateral EFL gene transfer amongst eukaryotes. Of most interest is a complex EFL evolution in a monophyletic assemblage comprised of cryptomonads and haptophytes. Since our analyses rejected any phylogenetic affinity amongst the EFL sequences from Goniomonas, photosynthetic cryptomonads, and haptophytes, the EFL genes of the three lineages most likely originated from different phylogenetic sources. 相似文献

The origins of the nearly one billion people inhabiting the Indian subcontinent and following the customs of the Hindu caste system are controversial: are they largely derived from Indian local populations (i.e. tribal groups) or from recent immigrants to India? Archaeological and linguistic evidence support the latter hypothesis, whereas recent genetic data seem to favor the former hypothesis. Here, we analyze the most extensive dataset of Indian caste and tribal Y chromosomes to date. We find that caste and tribal groups differ significantly in their haplogroup frequency distributions; caste groups are homogeneous for Y chromosome variation and more closely related to each other and to central Asian groups than to Indian tribal or any other Eurasian groups. We conclude that paternal lineages of Indian caste groups are primarily descended from Indo-European speakers who migrated from central Asia approximately 3,500 years ago. Conversely, paternal lineages of tribal groups are predominantly derived from the original Indian gene pool. We also provide evidence for bidirectional male gene flow between caste and tribal groups. In comparison, caste and tribal groups are homogeneous with respect to mitochondrial DNA variation, which may reflect the sociocultural characteristics of the Indian caste society. 相似文献

Milestones in the evolution of the eukaryotic cell are being discovered through the analysis of molecular sequences. As sequence data become increasingly plentiful, our ability to reconstruct the most distant evolutionary branchings of evolutionary trees is limited only by the mathematics of phylogenetic reconstruction. Analysis of ribosomal RNAs agrees with traditional analyses of morphological and developmental characters that all multicellular animals probably arose from a common ancestor, but highlights one of the major limitations of the various mathematical algorithms used. Refined methods of sequence analysis also suggest a previously unsuspected sister relationship between the eukaryotic nucleus and eocytes, a group of extremely thermophilic, sulfur-metabolizing bacteria, that questions the classical eukaryote/prokaryote division. 相似文献

To understand the ecology of migratory animals it is important to link geographic regions used by individuals including breeding,
wintering, and intermediate stopover sites. Previous conventional approaches used to track animal movements have relied on
extrinsic markers and typically the subsequent recovery of individuals. This approach has generally been inappropriate for
most small, or non-game animals. The use of intrinsic markers such as fatty acid profiles, molecular DNA analyses, and the
measurement of naturally occurring stable isotopes in animal tissues offer alternative approaches. This paper reviews the
use of stable isotope analyses (primarily δ13C, δ15N, δ34S, δD, δ87Sr) to trace nutritional origin and migration in animals. This approach relies on the fact that foodweb isotopic signatures
are reflected in the tissues of organisms and that such signatures can vary spatially based on a variety of biogeochemical
processes. Organisms moving between isotopically distinct foodwebs can carry with them information on the location of previous
feeding. Such an approach has been used to track animal use of inshore versus offshore, marine versus freshwater, terrestrial
C3 versus marine, terrestrial mesic versus xeric, and C3 versus C4 or Crassulacean acid metabolism foodwebs. More recently, the use of stable hydrogen isotope analyses (δD) to link organisms
to broad geographic origin in North America is based on large-scale isotopic contours of growing-season average δD values
in precipitation. This technique, especially when combined with the assay of other stable isotopes, will be extremely useful
in helping to track migration and movement of a wide range of animals from insects to birds and mammals. Future research to
refine our understanding of natural and anthropogenic-induced isotopic gradients in nature, and to explore the use of stable
isotopes of other elements, is recommended.

Hakka and Chaoshanese are two unique Han populations residing in southern China but with northern Han (NH) cultural traditions and linguistic influences. Although most of historical records indicate that both populations migrated from northern China in the last two thousand years, no consensus on their origins has been reached so far. To shed more light on the origins of Hakka and Chaoshanese, mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) of 170 Hakka from Meizhou and 102 Chaoshanese from Chaoshan area, Guangdong Province, were analyzed. Our results show that some southern Chinese predominant haplogroups, e.g. B, F, and M7, have relatively high frequencies in both populations. Although median network analyses show that Hakka/Chaoshanese share some haplotypes with NH, interpopulation comparison reveals that both populations show closer affinity with southern Han (SH) populations than with NH. In consideration of previous results from nuclear gene (including Y chromosome) research, it is likely that matrilineal landscapes of both Hakka and Chaoshanese have largely been shaped by the local people during their migration southward and/or later colonization in southern China, and factors such as cultural assimilation, patrilocality, and even sex‐bias in the immigrants might have played important roles during the process. Many dietary fatty acids (FA) have potent effects on inflammation, which is not only energetically costly, but also contributes to a range of chronic diseases. This presents an evolutionary paradox: Why should the host initiate a costly and damaging response to commonly encountered nutrients? We propose that the immune system has evolved a capacity to modify expenditure on inflammation to compensate for the effects of dietary FA on gut microorganisms. In a comprehensive literature review, we show that the body preferentially upregulates inflammation in response to saturated FA that promote harmful microbes. In contrast, the host opften reduces inflammation in response to the many unsaturated FA with antimicrobial properties. Our model is supported by contrasts involving shorter-chain FA and omega-3 FA, but with less consistent evidence for trans fats, which are a recent addition to the human diet. Our findings support the idea that the vertebrate immune system has evolved a capacity to detect diet-driven shipfts in the composition of gut microbiota from the profile of FA consumed and to calibrate the costs of inflammation in response to these cues. We conclude by extending the nutrient signaling model to other nutrients, and consider implications for drug discovery and public health. 相似文献

Major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) class II Ab genes have evolved into three distinct lineages. While lineage 2 alleles differ from lineage 1 alleles by the insertion of a retroposon in intron 2, the basis for the extremely large intron 2 in lineage 3 alleles has heretofore been undetermined. In this report, we demonstrate by nucleotide sequencing that the genomic sequences of prototypic alleles from all three lineages diverge significantly and that lineage 3 is derived from lineage 2 by two insertional events in intron 2. One insert, composed of a member of B1 short interspersed repetitive elements (SINEs), occurs 508 base pairs (bp) 3 of exon 2, and the other, 1141 bp 3 of exon 2 within the retroposon that distinguishes lineage 2 from lineage 1. To assess the evolutionary stability of these lineages and the extent of ancestral polymorphisms of Ab within Mus species, we extended our restriction site polymorphism analysis to include 86 alleles from 120 independently derived H2 haplotypes from 12 separate species and subspecies of Mus. A phylogenetic tree revealing the relationships of these Ab alleles with respect to restriction site polymorphisms, but excluding the retroposon insertions, demonstrated that these lineages have distinctive genomic structures beyond the retroposon polymorphisms. In summary, these mouse Ab genes were produced from successive retroposon insertion events. Lineage 1 and 2 were detected in a variety of Mus species, including Mus caroli, indicating that these lineages diverged more than 2 million years ago. Lineage 3 alleles were found only in the Mus musculus subspecies, suggesting that it diverged from lineage 2 more recently. Understanding the mode of origin of asexuality is central to ongoing debates concerning the evolution and maintenance of sexual reproduction in eukaryotes. This is because it has profound consequences for patterns of genetic diversity and ecological adaptability of asexual lineages, hence on the outcome of competition with sexual relatives both in short and longer terms. Among the possible routes to asexuality, hybridization is a very common mechanism in animals and plants. Aphids present frequent transitions from their ancestral reproductive mode (cyclical parthenogenesis) to permanent asexuality, but the mode of origin of asexual lineages is generally not known because it has never been thoroughly investigated with appropriate molecular tools. Rhopalosiphum padi is an aphid species with coexisting sexual (cyclically parthenogenetic) and asexual (obligately parthenogenetic) lineages that are genetically distinct. Previous studies have shown that asexual lineages of R. padi are heterozygous at most nuclear loci, suggesting either that they have undergone long-term asexuality (under which heterozygosity tends to increase) or that they have hybrid origins. To discriminate between these alternatives, we conducted an extensive molecular survey combining the sequence analysis of alleles of two nuclear DNA markers and mitochondrial DNA haplotypes in sexual and asexual lineages of R. padi. Both nuclear and cytoplasmic markers clearly showed that many asexual lineages have hybrid origins, the first such demonstration in aphids. Our results also indicated that asexuals result from multiple events of hybridization between R. padi and an unknown sibling species, and are of recent origin (contradicting previous estimates that asexual R. padi lineages were of moderate longevity). This study constitutes another example that putatively ancient asexual lineages are actually of much more recent origin than previously thought. The rat pericoronary adipose tissue was perfused in the presence of either the liposynthetic hormone insulin or the lipolytic hormone noradrenaline. Insulin perfusion associated with a) larger adipocyte mean sectional diameter in comparison with noradrenaline perfusion; b) glycogen deposition; c) appearance of small fat globules at discrete sites at the periphery of the main lipid drop. The two latter phenomena were apparently dose-dependent. Massive lipid deposition was induced by addition of triglycerides to the perfusion medium and this associated with appearance of prominent endoplasmic reticulum in the cytoplasm. In noradrenaline-perfused adipose tissue many small lipid droplets surrounded the central lipid deposit and the endoplasmic reticulum was in the form of both thin long, dashed cisternae sometime surrounding lipid droplets and grouped, anastomosing tubular cisternae. The present work shows that the perfused white adipose tissue of the heart is a suitable model to study, in situ, the morphological effects of hormones in adipocytes. 相似文献

The uplift of the Andes was a major factor for plant diversification in South America and had significant effects on the climatic patterns at the continental scale. It was crucial for the formation of the arid environments in south-eastern and western South America. However, both the timing of the major stages of the Andean uplift and the onset of aridity in western South America remain controversial. In this paper we examine the hypothesis that the Andean South American groups of Heliotropium originated and diversified in response to Andean orogeny during the late Miocene and a the subsequent development of aridity. To this end, we estimate divergence times and likely biogeographical origins of the major clades in the phylogeny of Heliotropium, using both Bayesian and likelihood methods. Divergence times of all Andean clades in Heliotropium are estimated to be of late Miocene or Pliocene ages. At least three independent Andean diversification events can be recognized within Heliotropium. Timing of the diversification in the Andean lineages Heliotropium sects.Heliothamnus, Cochranea, Heliotrophytum, Hypsogenia, Plagiomeris, Platygyne clearly correspond to a rapid, late Miocene uplift of the Andes and a Pliocene development of arid environments in South America. 相似文献

ABSTRACTNotably absent from assimilation scholarship are analyses that seriously engage, rather than dismiss, cultural explanations for differences in group outcomes. That dismissal has left the assimilation scholars ill-equipped to thoroughly respond to popular and quasi-academic explanations that rely on an all-encompassing view of culture to explain immigrant group differences in socioeconomic outcomes. Jennifer Lee and Min Zhou’s The Asian American Achievement Paradox embraces the cultural explanation, but traces the root of an ethnoracial culture to its class origins. In so doing, Lee and Zhou force scholars to contend seriously with ‘culture’ as part of a larger explanation for group outcomes. 相似文献
