Two species of marine mites belonging to the families Hyadesiidae and Halacaridae, Hyadesia sp. and Copidognathus sp., respectively, were found associated with the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis from Baja California in NW México. The first species was found inside the mussel gut with an intensity ranging from one to six mites per mussel and their prevalence was from 20.0 to 46.7%; this species was also found living free in the sediment at a density of 0.7 mite/100 ml. The second species was found on the mantle and gills of the host with an intensity ranging from one to three mites per host and their prevalence was from 3.3 to 6.7%; this species was abundant (4.5 mites/100 ml) and living free in the sediment around mussel clumps. Hyadesia sp. was found alive and attached in the gut of the mussel. A histological analysis revealed this species in the lumen of intestine surrounded by mucus and attached to the epithelial cells of the intestine, where some disorder of epithelial cells was associated. Moreover, this mite may be encapsulated by hemocytes inside the digestive diverticulum, the reproductive follicle, or the connective tissue surrounding the diverticulum. No damages to branches or gills resulting from the presence of Copidognathus sp. were observed. The results suggest that these mites are occasional invaders of mussels; however, as a result of this infestation, Hyadesia sp. may produce damage in the host's tissues. This is the first record of marine mites inside the gut, reproductive follicles, branches, and mantle of a marine bivalve.  相似文献

Aquaculture is growing rapidly in response to an increasing demand for protein and the over-exploitation of wild fisheries. Mussel (family Mytilidae) production has doubled over the last decade and currently stands at 1.5 million tonnes production per annum. Mussels produce organic biodeposits which are dispersed around the production site and, potentially, impact the receiving environment in a number of inter-linked ways. The reported benthic impacts that occur, primarily through the accumulation of these biodeposits and associated organic enrichment, vary widely between studies. The objectives of this research were to determine the nature of the relationship between sediment redox (a proxy for oxygenation) and farm-proximity and covariables whilst accounting for, and quantifying, differences in redox between sites. Sediment cores (N = 159) were taken remotely around a random sample of mussel farms, redox was measured at 10 mm sediment depth and linked to farm-distance and sediment organic/shell content and particle size, using an additive, mixed, weighted regression model. Redox varied considerably between sites and there was a highly significant reduction (50 mV) in redox adjacent to the mussel lines. Redox increased non-linearly with distance, rising rapidly at >7 m from the farm edge. The modest reduction in sediment oxygenation in close proximity to mussel farms reported here suggests that farms located over sediments characterised by pre-existing oxygen stress are likely to exacerbate benthic species impoverishment associated with reducing sedimentary conditions whilst those located over highly oxygenated sediments are likely to increase benthic productivity.  相似文献

The short-term effect of mussel dredging in a brackish Danish sound was studied. A commercial dredging track was identified and an analysis of the species composition inside the track and at an adjacent control area showed that dredging changed the community structure by reducing the density of polychaetes. In order to investigate the extent and the duration of the dredging impact experimental dredging was conducted. The experimental dredging removed 50% of the mussels in two dredged areas. Immediately after dredging, a significantly lower number of species was measured inside the mussel beds in dredged areas compared to control and boundary areas. This effect lasted for at least 40 days. The analysis of the species composition showed that the dredged area had a significantly lower density, particularly of polychaetes compared to the boundary area. An increased number of species was recorded outside the mussel beds just after dredging, but this effect lasted for less than 7 days. After dredging, brown shrimps, C. crangon invaded the dredged areas. This species is an important predator of smaller invertebrates, and it is suspected that it was feeding on small vulnerable polychaetes exposed at the sediment surface after dredging. The dredging process was observed to form 2–5-cm deep furrows in the seabed, but the sediment texture and the organic content of the sediment was not affected. The biomass accumulation of individual blue mussels was significantly lower in the dredged area compared to the boundary area. This indicates that the disturbance of the mussel bed structure reduced growth and that the lowering of intraspecific food competition caused by a reduced density of mussels did not increase the accumulation of biomass in the mussels which remained in the dredged area.  相似文献

Sulfate reduction and sulfide accumulation were examined in fine-grained sediments from rapidly accreting abandoned channels and mussel culture areas in the Eastern Scheldt, which covered 4 and 5% of the total surface area, respectively.Reduction rates were measured in batch experiments in which the SO4 2– depletion was measured during anoxic incubation. The reduction rates in summer varied between 14–68 mmol SO4 2– m–2 day–1 and were related to the sedimentation rate. In the most rapidly accreting channels, SO4 2– was exhausted below 15–50 cm and methanogenesis became the terminal process of organic carbon oxidationOne-dimensional modelling of sulfate profiles in mussel banks indicated that the subsurface influx of SO4 2– was almost of the same order as the diffusive flux at the sediment-seawater interface, during the initial stages of the mussel bank accretion. The energy dissipation of waves and tidal currents on the mussel bank surface increased the apparent sediment diffusivity up to 3-fold, especially in the winterThe results indicate that acid volatile sulfide (AVS) was the major, in-situ reduced, sulfur compound in the sediment. The sulfidation of easily extractable iron was nearly complete. Pyrite concentrations (40–80 M S cm–3) were as high as the AVS concentrations, but there was apparently no in-situ transformation of AVS into pyrite. Agroecology and conservation must overlap to protect biodiversity and farmer livelihoods. Coffee agroecosystems with complex shade canopies protect biodiversity. Yet, few have examined biodiversity in coffee agroecosystems in Asia relative to the Americas and many question whether coffee agroecosystems can play a similar role for conservation. We examined vegetation, ant and bird diversity, coffee yields and revenues, and harvest of alternative products in coffee farms and forests in SW Sumatra, Indonesia near Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBS). BBS is among the last habitats for large mammals in Sumatra and >15,000 families illegally cultivate coffee inside of BBS. As a basis for informing management recommendations, we compared the conservation potential and economic outputs from farms inside and outside of BBS. Forests had higher canopy cover, canopy depth, tree height, epiphyte loads, and more emergent trees than coffee farms. Coffee farms inside BBS had more epiphytes and trees and fewer coffee plants than farms outside BBS. Tree, ant, and bird richness was significantly greater in forests than in coffee farms, and richness did not differ in coffee farms inside and outside of BBS. Species similarity of forest and coffee trees, ants, and birds was generally low (<50%). Surprisingly, farms inside the park were significantly older, but farm size, coffee yields, and revenues from coffee did not depend on farm location. Farmers outside BBS received higher prices for their coffee and also more often produced other crops in their coffee fields such that incentives could be created to draw illegal farmers out of the park. We also discuss these results with reference to similar work in Chiapas, Mexico to compare the relative contribution of coffee fields to conservation in the two continents, and discuss implications for working with farmers in Sumatra towards conservation plans incorporating sustainable coffee production.  相似文献

While technological characteristics largely determine the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during the construction of a wind farm and meteorological circumstances the actual electricity production, a thorough analysis to quantify the GHG footprint variability (in g CO2eq/kWh electricity produced) between wind farms is still lacking at the global scale. Here, we quantified the GHG footprint of 26,821 wind farms located across the globe, combining turbine-specific technological parameters, life-cycle inventory data, and location- and temporal-specific meteorological information. These wind farms represent 79% of the 651 global wind (GW) capacity installed in 2019. Our results indicate a median GHG footprint for global wind electricity of 10 g CO2eq/kWh, ranging from 4 to 56 g CO2eq/kWh (2.5th and 97.5th percentiles). Differences in the GHG footprint of wind farms are mainly explained by spatial variability in wind speed, followed by whether the wind farm is located onshore or offshore, the turbine diameter, and the number of turbines in a wind farm. We also provided a metamodel based on these four predictors for users to be able to easily obtain a first indication of GHG footprints of new wind farms considered. Our results can be used to compare the GHG footprint of wind farms to one another and to other sources of electricity in a location-specific manner.  相似文献

The west coast of Australia is dominated by warm, oligotrophic waters, shallow carbonate-rich sediments and little terrigeneous nutrient input. Irradiance and light penetration are generally high so that benthic primary production is substantial and can equal that in the water column. Microphytobenthos has been shown to have a major influence on nutrient cycling in northern hemisphere waters, but little work has been published on this subject describing the Western Australian marine environment. This presentation focuses upon anthropogenic impacts on microphytobenthos and sediment-water column nitrogen cycling. The effects of artificial enclosures (harbours) on microphytobenthic communities and nitrogen cycling were examined over an annual cycle at 2 locations in Cockburn Sound, Western Australia. Core and bulk sediment samples were taken from bare sandy areas in water 6–7 m deep at paired sites inside and outside sea walls. Ex-situ core incubations were used to determine rates of N2 fixation, denitrification, fluxes of macronutrients and oxygen. Bulk sediment samples were analysed for pigments, fatty acids, sterols and grain size. Significant differences were found in both flux and biomarker data between the 2 areas, inside and outside the harbours and between summer and winter. Biomarker data gave information about the algal, bacterial and faunal composition of the sediments and how it changed across the same temporal and spatial scales as the fluxes. The combination of process studies and biomarker information promises to be a powerful tool for resolving a range of questions on the magnitude and mechanisms of nitrogen inputs and exports from these shallow ecosystems.  相似文献

Europe’s roadmap to a low-carbon economy aims to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. Beef production is an important source of GHG emissions and is expected to increase as the world population grows. LIFE BEEF CARBON is a voluntary European initiative that aims to reduce GHG emissions per unit of beef (carbon footprint) by 15% over a 10-year period on 2172 farms in four large beef-producing countries. Changes in farms beef carbon footprint are normally estimated via simulation modelling, but the methods current models apply differ. Thus, our initial goal was to develop a common modelling framework to estimate beef farms carbon footprint. The framework was developed for a diverse set of Western Europe farms located in Ireland, Spain, Italy and France. Whole farm and life cycle assessment (LCA) models were selected to quantify emissions for the different production contexts and harmonized. Carbon Audit was chosen for Ireland, Bovid-CO2 for Spain and CAP’2ER for France and Italy. All models were tested using 20 case study farms, that is, 5 per country and quantified GHG emissions associated with on-farm live weight gain. The comparison showed the ranking of beef systems gross carbon footprint was consistent across the three models. Suckler to weaning or store systems generally had the highest carbon footprint followed by suckler to beef systems and fattening beef systems. When applied to the same farm, Carbon Audit’s footprint estimates were slightly lower than CAP’2ER, but marginally higher than Bovid-CO2. These differences occurred because the models were adapted to a specific region’s production circumstances, which meant their emission factors for key sources; that is, methane from enteric fermentation and GHG emissions from concentrates were less accurate when used outside their target region. Thus, for the common modelling framework, region-specific LCA models were chosen to estimate beef carbon footprints instead of a single generic model. Additionally, the Carbon Audit and Bovid-CO2 models were updated to include carbon removal by soil and other environmental metrics included in CAP’2ER, for example, acidification. This allows all models to assess the effect carbon mitigation strategies have on other potential pollutants. Several options were identified to reduce beef farms carbon footprint, for example, improving genetic merit. These options were assessed for beef systems, and a mitigation plan was created by each nation. The cumulative mitigation effect of the LIFE BEEF CARBON plan was estimated to exceed the projects reduction target (−15%).  相似文献

Acid volatile sulfide (AVS) is a natural agent in sediments which complexes some cationic metals and thereby influences the toxicity of these metals to benthic organisms. Because of its influence on metal bioavailability, AVS has been proposed as a key normalization phase for the development of sediment quality criteria for metals. However, studies conducted primarily in marine and estuarine systems have shown that AVS concentrations can vary markedly both temporally and with (sediment) depth. In this study, AVS concentrations were measured monthly for 16 mo in several segments of sediment cores from three freshwater lakes: Caribou Lake, Fish Lake and Pike Lake in northeastern Minnesota, USA. The concentrations of AVS in cores from the three lakes varied inversely with sediment depth. AVS concentrations also varied seasonally by as much as two orders of magnitude and were directly correlated with changes in water temperature. The correlation between AVS and temperature likely was related both to changes in primary productivity and sediment microbial activity.  相似文献

As part of the energy transition, the French government is planning the construction of three offshore wind farms in Normandy (Bay of Seine and eastern part of the English Channel, north-western France) in the next years. These offshore wind farms will be integrated into an ecosystem already facing multiple anthropogenic disturbances such as maritime transport, fisheries, oyster and mussel farming, and sediment dredging. Currently no integrated, ecosystem-based study on the effects of the construction and exploitation of offshore wind farms exists, where biological approaches generally focused on the conservation of some valuable species or groups of species. Complementary trophic web modelling tools were applied to the Bay of Seine ecosystem (to the 50 km2 area covered by the wind farm) to analyse the potential impacts of benthos and fish aggregation caused by the introduction of additional hard substrates from the piles and the turbine scour protections. An Ecopath ecosystem model composed of 37 compartments, from phytoplankton to seabirds, was built to describe the situation “before” the construction of the wind farm. Then, an Ecosim projection over 30 years was performed after increasing the biomass of targeted benthic and fish compartments. Ecological Network Analysis (ENA) indices were calculated for the two periods, “before” and “after”, to compare network functioning and the overall structural properties of the food web. Our main results showed (1) that the total ecosystem activity, the overall system omnivory (proportion of generalist feeders), and the recycling increased after the construction of the wind farm; (2) that higher trophic levels such as piscivorous fish species, marine mammals, and seabirds responded positively to the aggregation of biomass on piles and turbine scour protections; and (3) a change in keystone groups after the construction towards more structuring and dominant compartments. Nonetheless, these changes could be considered as limited impacts of the wind farm installation on this coastal trophic web structure and functioning.  相似文献

A multidisciplinary approach was used to study the effects of pollution from a marine fish farm on nitrification rates and on the community structure of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in the underlying sediment. Organic content, ammonium concentrations, nitrification rates, and ammonia oxidizer most-probable-number counts were determined in samples of sediment collected from beneath a fish cage and on a transect at 20 and 40 m from the cage. The data suggest that nitrogen cycling was significantly disrupted directly beneath the fish cage, with inhibition of nitrification and denitrification. Although visual examination indicated some slight changes in sediment appearance at 20 m, all other measurements were similar to those obtained at 40 m, where the sediment was considered pristine. The community structures of proteobacterial β-subgroup ammonia-oxidizing bacteria at the sampling sites were compared by PCR amplification of 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA), using primers which target this group. PCR products were analyzed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and with oligonucleotide hybridization probes specific for different ammonia oxidizers. A DGGE doublet observed in PCR products from the highly polluted fish cage sediment sample was present at a lower intensity in the 20-m sample but was absent from the pristine 40-m sample station. Band migration, hybridization, and sequencing demonstrated that the doublet corresponded to a marine Nitrosomonas group which was originally observed in 16S rDNA clone libraries prepared from the same sediment samples but with different PCR primers. Our data suggest that this novel Nitrosomonas subgroup was selected for within polluted fish farm sediments and that the relative abundance of this group was influenced by the extent of pollution.  相似文献

为了解养殖场内贻贝的诺如病毒(Norovirus,NoVs)污染情况和基因型分布特点,分别于2019年4月和9月在浙江省舟山市枸杞岛后头湾和龙泉村贻贝养殖场近岸和远岸区域进行贻贝样本采集及诺如病毒检测,共检测670只贻贝样本,诺如病毒阳性率约9.9%(66/670)。离人类活动区域较近的贻贝,诺如病毒阳性率占总阳性率的72.7%(48/66),远岸的贻贝诺如病毒阳性率占总阳性率的27.3%(18/66)。共检测到6种诺如病毒基因型,分别为GI.3(36.4%)、GI.4(19.7%)、GII.12(18.2%)、GII.17(13.6%)、GII.3(10.6%)和GII.2(1.5%)。研究表明,枸杞岛养殖场中诺如病毒污染率较高,涉及基因型较多,人类活动对养殖场内贻贝中诺如病毒的富集量具有一定影响。  相似文献

An annular flume was used to measure the effect of increasing current velocity on mussel (Mytilus edulis) feeding rate and the stability of mussel beds sampled from the mouth of the Exe estuary (SW England). It was found that, in contrast to earlier flume studies, the feeding rates of mussels from open coast sites were unaffected by current velocities up to 0.8 m s–1. Algal cell depletion in the water column above mussels was a function of current velocity, increasing with declining currents below 0.05 m s–1. The erodability/stability of the mussel bed, measured in terms of critical erosion velocity, sediment mass eroded and mean erosion rate, was found to be a function of the nature of the substrate and the density of the mussels. Erosion of mussel beds on sandy substrate showed a non-linear relationship with mussel bed density. In comparison with the sand (0% mussel cover), sediment resuspension was about five and four times higher for 25% and 50% cover, respectively. This was due to the increased turbulence and scouring around the clumps of mussels in low-density parts of the bed, and this resulted in some mussels detaching from the bed. At ~100% mussel cover, the sandy bed was more protected by the dense surface layer of mussels, and none became detached during erosion due to the high number of byssal attachments between individuals. The sediment resuspension from the 100% mussel cover was about three times lower than the 0% cover. Erosion of the bed with 50% cover resulted in burial of a large proportion of the mussels, with a 6 cm increase in sediment level. However, the mussels returned to the surface and recovered in 1–2 days, due to a combination of migration upwards and substrate settlement. Channels on the edge of the main Exmouth mussel bed were characterised by a more stable substrate comprising pebbles and sand with varying mussel densities. At these sites, where mussels experience high current velocities on spring tides (up to 0.9 m s–1), there was no difference between the erodability of pebble/sand substrate with 0% and 100% mussel cover. The sediment erosion was also lower than the 100% mussel cover on the sandy substrate, particularly at currents >0.4 m s–1. Sampling of different parts of the mussel bed at Exmouth showed mussels at low densities were made up of smaller clumps with a lower mass ratio of mussels to attached substrate (pebbles/sand), thus providing a greater degree of anchorage. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) of the brown meagre Sciaena umbra was conducted in a northern Adriatic Sea mussel farm. The level of acoustic activity was found to be constantly high from June to August before declining sharply in September and there was significantly higher acoustic activity in the structured habitats within the mussel farm than in the bare sandy bottom outside the farm. Results are discussed in the context of the use of this species as an indicator species of artificial rocky habitats along the Mediterranean coastal environments.  相似文献

A multidisciplinary approach has identified sigmoidal genetic clines on the east and west coasts in central New Zealand where low-density ecological interactions occur between northern and southern lineages of the endemic greenshell mussel, Perna canaliculus. The sigmoidal clines indicate the existence of a mussel hybrid zone in a region of genetic discontinuities for many continuously distributed coastal taxa, in particular marine invertebrates. Examination of the genetic architecture of the hybrid zone revealed the differential contribution of individual microsatellite loci and/or alleles to defining the zone of interaction and no evidence of increased allelic richness or heterozygosity inside versus outside the hybrid zone. Genomics cline analysis identified one locus in particular (Pcan1–27) as being different from neutral expectations, thereby contributing to lineage differentiation. Estimates of contemporary gene flow revealed very high levels of within-lineage self-recruitment and a hybrid zone composed mostly (~85%) of northern immigrants. Broad scale interpretation of these results is consistent with a zone of genetic interaction that was generated between 0.3 and 1.3 million years before present at a time of pronounced global sea-level change. At that time, the continuous distribution of the greenshell mussel was split into northern and southern groups, which differentiated to become distinct lineages, and which have subsequently been reunited (secondary contact) resulting in the generation of the hybrid zone at ~42°S.  相似文献

为了更清楚认识倾倒区海域沉积物的污染状况,测定了苍南海洋倾倒区海域表层沉积物中酸可挥发性硫化物(AVS)、酸可提取重金属(SEM)的含量,并对AVS、SEM、及ΣSEM-AVS的平面分布进行分析.结果表明,该倾倒区表层沉积物中AVS含量为0.19-1.88μmol·g-1,倾倒区附近海域AVS含量高于周边海域;SEM平均含量为2.4μmol·g-1,SEM含量往倾倒区方向有增加趋势.从单个重金属对ΣSEM的贡献率来看,Zn>Cr>Cu>Pb>Cd,SEMZn基本在50%以上,而SEMCd均在1%以下,其分布形态主要受Zn的控制.ΣSEM-AVS差值均大于0,且在倾倒区及附近海域其ΣSEM-AVS值高于沿岸各站,说明倾倒区海域沉积物中重金属对生物可能有一定毒性,具有潜在重金属生态风险.  相似文献

Anchialine lakes are a globally rare and unique ecosystem consisting of saline lakes surrounded by land and isolated from the surrounding marine environment. These lakes host a unique flora and fauna including numerous endemic species. Relatively few studies have, however, studied the prokaryote communities present in these lakes and compared them with the surrounding ‘open water’ marine environment. In the present study, we used a 16S rRNA gene barcoded pyrosequencing approach to examine prokaryote (Bacteria and Archaea) composition in three distinct biotopes (sediment, water and the mussel Brachidontes sp.) inhabiting four habitats, namely, three marine lakes and the surrounding marine environment of Berau, Indonesia. Biotope and habitat proved significant predictors of variation in bacterial and archaeal composition and higher taxon abundance. Most bacterial sequences belonged to OTUs assigned to the Proteobacteria. Compared to sediment and water, mussels had relatively high abundances of the classes Mollicutes and Epsilonproteobacteria. Most archaeal sequences, in turn, belonged to OTUs assigned to the Crenarchaeota with the relative abundance of crenarchaeotes highest in mussel samples. For both Bacteria and Archaea, the main variation in composition was between water samples on the one hand and sediment and mussel samples on the other. Sediment and mussels also shared much more OTUs than either shared with water. Abundant bacterial OTUs in mussels were related to organisms previously obtained from corals, oysters and the deepsea mussel Bathymodiolus manusensis. Abundant archaeal OTUs in mussels, in contrast, were closely related to organisms previously obtained from sediment.  相似文献

Fish kills in two geographically separate fish farms in northern Denmark in 2012, one using marine, the other brackish water ‘Recirculation Aquaculture Systems’ (RAS), were found to be caused by Pfiesteria shumwayae and Luciella masanensis, two species of dinoflagellates belonging to the family Pfiesteriaceae. There were no other harmful algae present in either of the aquaculture plants. Serious fish kills in the US have been attributed to Pfiesteria during the past 20 years, but this type of mortality has not been documented elsewhere. L. masanensis, described recently from Korea and USA, has not been previously reported to be the source of fish kills. In the marine farm, the affected fish was rainbow trout, in the brackish water farm pikeperch. Light microscopy is presently insufficient to discriminate between the approx. 20 species of the family Pfiesteriaceae described. Identification of the two algal species was therefore based on molecular sequencing of nuclear-encoded LSU rDNA, confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and, eventually, also by examination of the very thin amphiesmal plates of the flagellates by calcofluor-stained cells in a fluorescence microscope.Although the two fish farms differed in light and salinity conditions, both farms used re-circulating water in closed circuit systems. The dinoflagellates were examined in detail and shown to feed on organic material such as live, damaged nematodes, as described for the single pfiesteriacean flagellate known from freshwater, Tyrannodinium edax. Algal cells were observed to attach to their prey by an attachment filament and subsequently used a peduncle to suck up the food. Fish farms utilizing water recirculation technology are gaining popularity due to their reduced effect on the environment. The two cases from Denmark are apparently the first RAS farms in which serious fish kills have been reported. In the marine farm (Luciella) fish mortality increased dramatically despite treatment of the water with peracetic acid and chloramine-T. The plant was temporarily closed down pending investigation into the cause of mortality and subsequently to determine a method of management to control the dinoflagellate and avoid future fish kills. In the brackish water farm (Pfiesteria), water was treated with chloramine-T, which caused the dinoflagellates to disappear temporarily from the water column, apparently forming temporary cysts. The treatment was repeated after a few days to a week, when the temporary cysts appeared to germinate and the dinoflagellates reappeared in the water column.  相似文献

Hyalinoecia artifex is an abundant species on the US Atlantic margin, although little is known about its behavior, ecology, or reproduction. We provide field notes and high‐resolution in situ imagery of this species observed and collected in 2013 and 2015. Hyalinoecia artifex occurred primarily on soft sediment at a density of 10.9±0.95 individuals m?2 (mean±standard error). Although they were found adjacent to mussel beds associated with methane seeps, worms were negatively associated with authigenic carbonate and other epibenthic megafauna in the study area. Quill worms moved across the sediment by extending their heads from the tubes and dragging the tubes forward. Stable isotope analysis indicated that H. artifex is a secondary consumer. Most individuals collected in 2015 were ripe, with mature oocytes up to 400 μm. Oocytes were yolky, yellow in color and positively buoyant; no brooding was observed.  相似文献
