Intermittent methohexitone for conservative dentistry has been shown to cause clinically undetectable respiratory obstruction, depression of the laryngeal reflex, and arterial hypoxaemia. Because of the pronounced decrease in total peripheral resistance, the blood pressure was maintained only by large increases in cardiac output. Furthermore, the output of the heart could not increase when challenged by hypoxia.  相似文献

The induction of anaesthesia with intravenous diazepam is a valuable contribution to the simpler use of cardioversion and is the method of choice because it is readily available for elective cardioversion. Fifty-six cardioversion procedures were carried out by this method in an African hospital. No special premedication or drug preparation was used. There were no hazards apart from transient apnoea in two patients and persisting amnesia in one patient.  相似文献

Patients unable to submit themselves to routine dental treatment under local anaesthesia were studied during treatment under diazepam sedation accompanied by local anaesthesia, and compared with a matched control group for psychiatric assessment. Physiological responses, operating conditions, amnesia, pain threshold, and recovery were all assessed by various tests.Some of the patients had an anxiety neurosis, and several had been referred because of previous failure to complete dental treatment. Satisfactory conditions were obtained in all but two instances, and no adverse physiological responses occurred with diazepam in an intravenous dose of 0·2 mg./kg. Patients were clinically safe to leave accompanied by a responsible adult within one hour of administration of the drug. Some patients showed an improvement in attitude towards dentistry following treatment.  相似文献

Nowadays, allelopathic investigations have focused to identify action mechanisms of this compounds on target organisms in natural habitats. It may tend to introduce new natural herbicides and pesticides for replacing the synthetic ones. In the present study, the allelopathic effects of thymol on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) as a model plant were investigated in physiological and biochemical aspects. At the first stage, the effect of different concentrations of thymol on some growth parameters, including seed germination, radicle and plumule growth were evaluated to determine the optimum concentration for the continuation of our experiment. Then, the lettuce seedlings were cultured in pots containing peat and were irrigated with Hoagland nutrient solution supplemented with thymol at the concentration of 50 and 100 μg/mL. The effect of these treatments on physiological, biochemical aspects of the plant were studied following the plant growth. The results showed whereas, the shoot fresh and dry weights and photosynthetic rate in the treated group were decreased significantly compared to the control group at P ≤ 0.05, photochemical efficiency of photosystem II, total protein concentration, proline content and the activity of some antioxidant enzymes such as polyphenol oxidase, ascorbate peroxidase and catalase were increased in treated plants than control ones. However, there was no significantly change in chlorophyll content in treated group than control. It can be concluded that the thymol as an allelochemical caused some physiological and biochemical responses in the lettuce which are much similar to induced responses under abiotic stress. Indeed, it induces a kind of stress named as allelochemical stress.  相似文献

Variations in physiology and metabolic products of Cistus creticus subsp. eriocephalus along an altitudinal gradient (350–750 m.a.s.l.) within the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park (central Italy) were studied. The results showed that the phenol production was in relationship with the net photosynthetic rates and the chlorophyll content. In particular, the increasing caffeic acid (CA) content with altitude suggested its role in providing an additional photo‐protection mechanism, by its ability to consume photochemical reducing power and acting as an alternative C‐atom sink under high light conditions. The metabolic production was tested by high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) fingerprint analysis, highlighting the potential of this technique in biologic studies.  相似文献

Comparative physiologists and physiological ecologists havestriven to elucidate the physiological adaptations which eliminateor mitigate environmental stress. Stress tolerance is thoughtto influence the distribution of species as well as the fitnessof individuals within various habitats. Differential stresstolerance depends in large part on physiological mechanismswhich mitigate the deleterious effects of stress. Very littleinformation is available, however, regarding the mechanismsand pathways by which such physiological adaptations arose andwere modified. We point out two methods by which one can investigatethe evolution of stress tolerance: phylogenetic studies andselection studies. Phylogenetic studies have the advantage thatthey can be used to study wild populations, with the drawbackthat species numbers and distribution may be limiting. In addition,for many physiologically interesting clades, the phylogeneticrelationships have yet to be determined. Selection studies havethe advantage that the evolution of physiological systems canbe studied in response to very specific forms of stress. Inaddition, the phytogeny of the organisms can be experimentallymanipulated and replication permits rigorous statistical analysis.The results of studies of the evolution of increased desiccationresistance in Drosophila are presented as an example of themethods by which insights can be obtained regarding the variableswhich respond to selection, the rate of evolutionary changeand the process by which physiological performance changes overevolutionary time. Selection studies can be designed to providemodels regarding the mechanisms, tuning and directions of physiologicalevolution.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Aquatic habitats, especially those of the intertidal,are subject to massive fluctuation of O2 level including periodsof both extreme hypoxia and hyperoxia. Most animals have someability to regulate oxygen consumption during oxygen depletion,although the critical oxygen level above which compensationis possible varies complexly with many external and internalfactors. Mechanisms of detection of, and compensation for, hypoxicexposure are examined, in both the short and long-term. Thetime courses of behavioral, ventilatory and circulatory responsesto hypoxia are outlined and the limitations of their role inmaintenance of aerobic metabolism are discussed. The role ofadjustment of O2 binding properties of respiratory pigmentsin maintenance of O2 consumption in hypoxia is also explored.Finally the role of anaerobic energy production is briefly outlined.  相似文献

Physiological Responses of Limonium aureum Seeds to Ultra-drying   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The seeds of Limonium aureum (L.) Hill. were dried from 8.92% to 2.88% moisture content in a desiccating container with silica gel. After ultra-drying the seeds were accelerated aged (50 ℃, 1 month), and some physiological indices, including the electrical conductivity, dehydrogenase activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), glutathione reductase (GR), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), volatile aldehydes and malondialdehyde (MDA) were tested. The results indicated that dehydrogenase, POD, SOD, GR, APX and CAT activities of the ultra-dry seeds were higher than the control seeds, while volatile aldehydes and malondialdehyde were lower than the control group. The results suggest that ultra-drying is beneficial for maintaining the vigor of L. aureum seeds at a high level. Thus, L. aureum seeds could be stored under ultra-dry conditions.  相似文献

将多蒴灰藓(Hypnum fertile)置于紫外辐射下照光3周,研究了紫外辐射对多蒴灰藓的损害及其生理响应。结果表明: 与对照(自然环境)相比,多蒴灰藓的叶绿素和类胡萝卜素含量均随紫外辐射时间的延长而减少,MDA含量却明显增加,SOD、POD和CAT活性也相应增加;增加紫外辐射量会引起多蒴灰藓的氧化胁迫,其能通过增加抗氧化酶的活性来减轻这种胁迫。  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Littoral lentic and shallow lotic freshwater habitatsare unpredictable in periodicity and duration of shore emersion.As a result, freshwater bivalves have evolved extensive capacitiesto withstand prolonged emersion. Valve movement behaviors allowemersed bivalves to control rate of water loss while maintainingat least partial aerial gas exchange; these behaviors are affectedby environmental variables such as temperature and relativehumidity. Aerial oxygen uptake is associated directly with valveventilatory behaviors and mantle edge exposure. Such behaviorsare often phasic, indicative of oxygen "debt" payment. Lackingeffective hemolymph buffer, respiratory acidosis during emersionis compensated by shell carbonate stores allowing hemolymphPCO2 to rise to levels facilitating diffusion of CO2 to theenvironment. During emersion, hemolymph calcium can increasefour fold while Na and Cl are tightly regulated. Ammonia productionceases in emersed bivalves. It resumes on reimmersion, indicativeof heavy reliance on non-protein catabolism during emersion.Some emersion adaptations of freshwater species appear to bemodifications of those displayed by intertidal and estuarinebivalves, while others appear independently evolved to allowsurvival of the extreme emersion periods associated with lifein shallow freshwaters.  相似文献

以耐海水菠菜品种荷兰3号和海水敏感品种圆叶菠菜为材料,采用水培方法,研究了海水胁迫对菠菜叶片、根系质膜的伤害作用以及叶片光合作用、叶绿素荧光参数的影响.结果表明:(1)海水胁迫对荷兰3号单株干重影响不大,而显著降低圆叶菠菜的单株干重,并使2个品种植株的叶片和根系MDA含量增加,质膜透性增大,叶片光合色素含量降低,但荷兰3号的变化幅度(叶片MDA除外)小于圆叶菠菜.(2)海水胁迫下,短期内2个品种由于气孔限制引起叶片胞间CO2浓度(Ci)降低,净光合速率(Pn)下降;长期胁迫下,荷兰3号Pn恢复到对照水平,而圆叶菠菜同化力下降,Pn降低.(3)海水胁迫对荷兰3号光化学猝灭系数(qP)影响不大,实际光化学效率(ΦPSⅡ)明显升高,而圆叶菠菜的qP和ΦPSⅡ均下降;荷兰3号初始荧光(F0)的下降幅度和非光化学猝灭系数(qN)上升幅度比圆叶菠菜大;2个菠菜品种的最大光化学效率(Fv/Fm)均下降,但荷兰3号光抑制程度(1-qP/qN)的升高幅度比圆叶菠菜小.研究结果说明,海水胁迫下,2个耐性不同的菠菜品种植株都产生了光合作用的光抑制和光氧化伤害,使膜质过氧化和叶绿素含量降低;耐性强的品种能够较多地将光能用于光化学反应,热耗散能力较强,光抑制程度较低,膜系统和光合色素受到活性氧的破坏程度较低,保持了较高的净光合速率,最终可明显降低海水胁迫对植株生长的影响.  相似文献

Copper is a highly reactive, toxic metal; consequently, transport of this metal within the cell is tightly regulated. Intriguingly, the actinobacterium Kineococcus radiotolerans has been shown to not only accumulate soluble copper to high levels within the cytoplasm, but the phenotype also correlated with enhanced cell growth during chronic exposure to ionizing radiation. This study offers a first glimpse into the physiological and proteomic responses of K. radiotolerans to copper at increasing concentration and distinct growth phases. Aerobic growth rates and biomass yields were similar over a range of Cu(II) concentrations (0–1.5 mM) in complex medium. Copper uptake coincided with active cell growth and intracellular accumulation was positively correlated with Cu(II) concentration in the growth medium (R2 = 0.7). Approximately 40% of protein coding ORFs on the K. radiotolerans genome were differentially expressed in response to the copper treatments imposed. Copper accumulation coincided with increased abundance of proteins involved in oxidative stress and defense, DNA stabilization and repair, and protein turnover. Interestingly, the specific activity of superoxide dismutase was repressed by low to moderate concentrations of copper during exponential growth, and activity was unresponsive to perturbation with paraquot. The biochemical response pathways invoked by sub-lethal copper concentrations are exceptionally complex; though integral cellular functions are preserved, in part, through the coordination of defense enzymes, chaperones, antioxidants and protective osmolytes that likely help maintain cellular redox. This study extends our understanding of the ecology and physiology of this unique actinobacterium that could potentially inspire new biotechnologies in metal recovery and sequestration, and environmental restoration.  相似文献

Ungrafted apple rootstocks were grown in sand cultures at constant root temperatures between 20°C to 40°C. Temperatures of 30°C and above reduced root and shoot growth. Serious damage to the leaves occurred at 35°C and above. The O2 consumption, CO2 evolution and respiratory quotient (RQ) of the roots showed maximum values at 35°C. Different rootstock cultivars varied greatly in their susceptibility to damage by supraoptimal root temperatures apparently due to anaerobic respiration. The more susceptible ones differed from resistant types in the larger amount of ethanol they accumulated in their roots at supraoptimal root temperature, and the more severe reduction in the malic acid content of the roots at such temperature. Acetaldehyde was also found in roots and leaves at supraoptimal root temperatures, whereas the organic acid content of the leaves tended to decrease. Supraoptimal root temperature also caused a reduction of cytokinins in both roots and leaves accompanied by a reduction in the leaf chlorophyll content. This could be prevented by the application of kinetin or benzyladenine to the leaves. In a short experiment a rise in root temperature up to 40°C caused an increase in transpiration and a decrease in the resistance of the leaves to the passage of water vapor, whereas in prolonged experiments transpiration reached a maximum and leaf resistance a minimum at 30°C. The leaf water potential increased also with increasing root temperature. Leaf temperature increased with increasing root temperature, irrespective of increasing or decreasing transpiration rates.  相似文献

Career choice is a complex decision in a student''s life. The opportunity to participate in dental education in many countries, especially in the developing ones, is limited to a small percentage of the community. There is a wide range of options for students to choose as a career in general family, gender, personal interest; outcome expectancies can affect the decision in choosing it. Many studies showed that many individuals find themselves in occupations not really knowing why they made that particular decision. The changing nature of the dental workforce and the need to retain the services of future members has made it important to understand why current dental students have chosen dentistry as their career. However, the choice of dentistry becomes forceful at times by peer pressure, cultural thrust or inability to procure medicine. It is of interest to evaluate dentistry as a prospective career choice in India. The participants answered a questionnaire based online survey and the results were collected and analysed statistically. Analyses of data from the survey shows that majority (36.72%) of students had chosen dentistry as a career choice having missed entry or selection into medicine.  相似文献

Dunaliella salina is well known for its ability to accumulate large amounts of β-carotene. Myo-inositol (MI) enhances the biomass production of D. salina, but the underlying mechanisms were unclear. The present study showed that the concentration of exogenous MI decreased gradually and reached a constant level at the 4th day of cultivation. MI enhanced the contents of total colored carotenoids and the activity of photosystem II. Metabolic profiles were significantly changed after the addition of exogenous MI, as revealed by multivariate statistical analysis. The metabolites could be categorized into four groups based on the relative levels in different samples. Exogenous MI increased the levels of most detected sugars, amino acids, and total saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Based on the physiological and metabolic analyses, a hypothetical growth-promoting model that MI promotes the growth of D. salina TG by increasing the levels of key metabolites and possibly enhancing photosynthesis, was proposed. This study provides valuable information for understanding the growth-promoting mechanisms of MI in D. salina from the metabolic perspective.  相似文献
