Eighteen opisthobranch species are described and illustrated from the Sudanese Red Sea, including seven new species, one new subspecies and three species for which this is the first Red Sea record. Eleven bullomorphs, four pleurobranchomorphs, four sacoglossans and four phyllidiid mudibranchs are now known from the Red Sea. There appears to be a high percentage of endemic species in the Red Sea. This is what one might expect, in view of the conditions of near isolation, low temperatures and high salinity that prevailed in this sea 13000 23000 years ago. Of the groups discussed in this paper, one Red Sea species has invaded the Mediterranean Sea, and one Mediterranean species has invaded the Red Sea, since the opening of the Suez Canal in 1867. Many Red Sea species are very colourful, in comparison to Mediterranean ones. This could perhaps be because Red Sea waters are cleaner, thereby favouring the evolution of greater precision in colour markings.  相似文献

Nine species of Siganus (Perciformes: Siganidae) were examined for dactylogyrids (Monogenoidea) from the Red Sea, Egypt; the Great Barrier Reef, Australia; and the South China Sea, China. Species of Tetrancistrum were found on siganids from all 3 localities; Pseudohaliotrema spp. were restricted to siganids from the Great Barrier Reef; and species representing Glyphidohaptor n. gen. were found on siganids from the Red Sea and Great Barrier Reef. Siganus argenteus from the Red Sea and Siganus vulpinus from the Great Barrier Reef were negative for dactylogyrid parasites. Glyphidohaptor n. gen. is proposed for 3 species (2 species new to science) and the new species are described: Glyphidohaptor phractophallus n. sp. from Siganus fuscescens from the Great Barrier Reef; Glyphidohaptor sigani n. sp. from Siganus doliatus (type host), Siganus punctatus, Siganus corallinus, and Siganus lineatus from the Great Barrier Reef; and Glyphidohaptor plectocirra (Paperna, 1972) n. comb. (= Pseudohaliotrema plectocirra Paperna, 1972) from Siganus luridus and Siganus rivulatus from the Red Sea.  相似文献

A new genus, a new subgenus, four new species and four previously described species are recorded from the Red Sea. The new genus Anomalorbis has four and a half thoracic segments. Re-discovery of the sinistral variety of Janua (Dexiospira) steueri confirms Sterzinger's observation that this species may coil in either direction. Janua (Fauveldora) anticorrugata sp. nov. is also sinistral and a shallow water species. It therefore appears that the Red Sea may have been the centre of origin for sinistral mutants of the Janua complex. Other of the new forms live in fairly deep water. The assemblage encountered shows closest affinity with the Indo-Pacific, but suggests a high degree of endemism, which may be related to the high temperatures prevailing at all depths in the Red Sea.  相似文献

Twenty three echinoid species are described and illustrated from the Pliocene of the area north of Mersa Alam, Red Sea coast of Egypt. Two new speciesSchizaster (Paraster) ashrafi andBrissus shaimaae, and one new subspeciesMaretia planulata abbassi, are described. Six species are recorded here for the first time from the Pliocene of the Red Sea:Eucidaris metularia (LAMARCK), {ITEchinoneus cyclostomus} LESKE,Clypeaster suffarcinatus DUNCAN & SLADEN, C.fervens KOEHLER, C. {ITtelurus} CLARK, andLaganum depressum delicatum MAZZETTI. A discussion is given of the Miocene - Pliocene boundary, the age of the area studied is referred to the early - late Pliocene.  相似文献

A new species of scorpionfish Neomerinthe bathyperimensis is described from a single specimen, dredged in deep waters of the southern Red Sea. The type specimen is aberrant in that it lacks the anal-fin spines and their supporting pterygiophores. This is the first record of the genus from the Red Sea and the north-western Indian Ocean.  相似文献

A new scleractinian coral species, Cyphastrea kausti sp. n., is described from 13 specimens from the Red Sea. It is characterised by the presence of eight primary septa, unlike the other species of the genus, which have six, ten or 12 primary septa. The new species has morphological affinities with Cyphastrea microphthalma, from which it can be distinguished by the lower number of septa (on average eight instead of ten), and smaller calices and corallites. This species was observed in the northern and central Red Sea and appears to be absent from the southern Red Sea.  相似文献

Twenty species of Cladocera are reported from the Nile, where lacustrine species dominate, and from Jebel Marra and the Red Sea Hills, where chydorids dominate. The community found in the Red Sea Hills is more typically desertic than that of Jebel Marra, which appears closely related to the fauna of the West and Central African Sahel.  相似文献

Alien species are considered one of the prime threats to biodiversity, driving major changes in ecosystem structure and function. Identifying the traits associated with alien introduction has been largely restricted to comparing indigenous and alien species or comparing alien species that differ in abundance or impact. However, a more complete understanding may emerge when the entire pool of potential alien species is used as a control, information that is rarely available. In the eastern Mediterranean, the marine environment is undergoing an unparalleled species composition transformation, as a flood of aliens have entered from the Red Sea following the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. In this study, we compile data on species traits, geographical distribution, and environmental affinity of the entire pool of reef‐associated fish species in the Red Sea and more generally across the Indo‐Pacific. We use this extensive data to identify the prime characteristics separating Red Sea species that have become alien in the Mediterranean from those that have not. We find that alien species occupy a larger range of environments in their native ranges, explaining their ability to colonize the seasonal Mediterranean. Red Sea species that naturally experience high maximum temperatures in their native range have a high probability of becoming alien. Thus, contrary to predictions of an accelerating number of aliens following increased water temperatures, hotter summers in this region may prevent the establishment of many alien species. We further find that ecological trait diversity of alien species is substantially more evenly spaced and more divergent than random samples from the pool of Red Sea species, pointing at additional processes, such as competition, promoting ecological diversity among alien species. We use these results to provide a first quantitative ranking of the potential of Red Sea species to become established in the eastern Mediterranean.  相似文献

Lessepsian migrant Fistularia commersonii from the Rhodes marine area   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The bluespotted cornetfish Fistularia commersonii which originates from the Red Sea, appeared in the marine area of Rhodes Island (south-east Aegean Sea). This is a new record of the species based on 37 specimens caught during summer-winter 2001. The species appears to be spreading rapidly west and easily becoming established in Mediterranean coastal habitats.  相似文献

The effects of opening the Suez Canal as a connection between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea were reported for a number of marine species. However, the evolutionary origin of the seagrasses in the Red Sea and the linking population genetics of seagrasses between the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea have not yet been investigated in detail. The invasion of Halophila stipulacea Asch. from the Red Sea into the Mediterranean Sea after the opening of the Suez Canal was already recorded. We hypothesize that Halophila ovalis populations in the Red Sea developed through long-term historical processes such as vicariant evolutionary diversification. Seagrass samples were collected along the Egyptian coastline of the Red Sea and analysed by the molecular marker ITS. The sequences were compared with published ITS sequences from seagrasses collected in the whole area of interest. In this study, we reveal the linking population genetics, phylogeography and phylogenetics of two dominant seagrass species, Halophila stipulacea and Halophila ovalis, among species collected in the Red Sea and worldwide. The results indicate that the Red Sea Halophila ovalis populations do not group to Halophila ovalis worldwide, and Halophila major, Halophila ovalis collected worldwide and Halophila ovalis collected at the Red Sea are sister clades. Hence, vicariant evolutionary diversification for Halophila ovalis may occur in the Red Sea.  相似文献

Twenty-one species of dragonflies are recorded from the Nile and the Red Sea Hills in the Sudan. The majority are species of africotropical origin, but wide-ranging and tolerant of strongly fluctuating environmental conditions. A small but significant fraction is restricted to the Nile Valley, and another fraction, found only in the Red Sea Hills, is composed of Eremian species of Palaearctic origin. Besides adults, the last-instar larvae of Pseudogrion niloticum and of Paragomphus pumilio are described and figured.  相似文献

A new species of the endoparasitic copepod Enterognathus (Cyclopoida, Enterognathidae) is described from a crinoid host in the Seto Inland Sea, western Japan. This is a third species of the genus and its first occurrence in the Pacific Ocean. The new species is distinguished from two previously known congeners by the morphology of the body somites, caudal rami, antennae and legs. Crinoid parasites belonging to Enterognathus and the closely related genus Parenterognathus have a broad distribution from the northeastern Atlantic through the Red Sea to the West Pacific.  相似文献

A total of 23 species and three groups of form variants of oncaeidcopepods have been identified, which were collected in smallmesh net samples taken along a transect from the northernmostRed Sea (>27°N) to the Gulf of Aqaba down to a maximumdepth of 800 m. Two of the species were present only in theRed Sea main basin, but were not recorded in the Gulf. By comparingthe present results with previously published data from thecentral and southern Red Sea a first assessment of the zoogeographicaldistribution of Oncaeidae in the entire Red Sea has been achieved. The species diversity of Oncaeidae in the Gulf of Aqaba appearsto be considerably lower compared to the southern Red Sea, where31 oncaeid species and four groups of form variants have beenfound. The observed latitudinal gradient in species numbersof Oncaeidae generally corresponds to the gradients observedfor various other zooplankton taxa in the Red Sea. First dataon the vertical distribution of oncaeid species in the Gulfare provided.  相似文献

The distribution and ecology of seagrasses along parts of the Egyptian Red Sea coasts have been investigated. Five of the 10 species ever reported from the Red Sea have been found in this area, i.e. Halodule uninervis (Forssk.) Aschers., Thalassodendron ciliatum (Forssk.) den Hartog, Halophila stipulacea (Forssk.) Aschers., Halophila ovalis (R. Br.) Hook. f. and Halophila ovata Gaud. H. ovata is recorded here for the first time for the west coast of the Red Sea. The finding of Halophila decipiens Ostenfeld represents a new record to the Red Sea; this species has been found at a depth of 30 m, near Ras Ghârib in the Gulf of Suez.  相似文献

Distribution patterns of planktonic foraminifera in four sediment cores from the Red Sea are studied. The most common species are Globigerinoides ruber, G. sacculifer, Globigerinella siphonifera and Orbulina universa. G. ruber and G. sacculifer show opposite trends of distribution in the sediment cores. Abundance of the foraminifera during the glacial periods suggests that the connection of the Red Sea to the Indian ocean was not completely interrupted and the salinity conditions were not extreme. However, higher salinities appear to have existed in the northern Red Sea, where most of the planktonic foraminifera that occur in the southern Red Sea are absent. It is inferred that the salinity in the southern Red Sea during the glacial period was less than 50%, whereas higher salinity might have existed in the north where the influence of the Indian Ocean was minimal.  相似文献
