Five species of myxosporideans were found in pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus L.) from Ryan Lake, Algonquin Park, Ontario. Myxobolus osburni Herrick 1936 was found in pancreatic tissue. Myxobilatus ohioensis (Herrick 1941) Davis 1944 was found in the ureters and urinary bladder. Three new species are described, namely, Myxobolus uvuliferis sp. n. (in the fibrous capsule surrounding the metacercariae of Uvulifer ambloplitis (Hughes 1927), Myxobolus magnaspherus sp. n. (in the parietal peritoneum) and Myxobolus dechtiari sp. n. (in the gills). Myxobolus uvuliferis sp. n. is most similar to M. osburni, but its spores are subspherical and not spherical. Myxobolus magnaspherus sp. n. is most similar to Myxobolus gigas Auerbach 1906, but its spores are wider than long, and they have exceedingly long polar filaments. Myxobolus dechtiari sp. n. is similar to Myxobolus karelicus Petruschewsky 1940 but it lacks an intercapsular appendix. 相似文献

The effects of ageing oocytes for 6 h before fertilization in the European catfish Silurus glanis are compared with the same experiment under normal conditions (stripping and fertilization immediately after ovulation). Fertilization rate and hatching rate are lower in the aged groups, while the percentages of malformed larvae and chromosomal abnormalities are significantly higher. Three trypsin isoforms (designated as T1, T2, and T3), three chymotrypsin isoforms (Kh1, Kh2, and Kh3), and two elastase isoforms (E1 and E2) were isolated from the pancreas of European catfish Silurus glanis L. by salting out with (NH4)2SO4, gel chromatography on Sephadex G-75, and ion exchange chromatography on DEAE cellulose. Isoelectric points of the enzymes, determined by isoelectric focusing, amounted to 4.42 for T1, 5.64 for T2, 6.90 for T3, 4.93 for Khl, 5.23 for Kh2, 6.18 for Kh3, 6.17 for E1, and 8.48 for E2. Molecular weights of proteinases within each group were close and amounted to 30100 Da for trypsins, 39800 Da for chymotrypsins, and 24000 Da for elastases. The enzymes isolated displayed maximal activities at alkaline pH values. Inhibitor analysis demonstrated that all the proteinases isolated from European catfish pancreas belonged to the serine type. 相似文献

Six non-native invasive fish species from the Slovak part of the Tisa River basin, namely Carassius gibelio, Pseudorasbora parva, Ameiurus melas, A. nebulosus, Lepomis gibbosus, Perccottus glenii, and three gobiid species from the Danube River, namely Neogobius melanostomus, N. fluviatilis and N. kessleri, were investigated for endohelminth parasites. The expanding Asian cestode Nippotaenia mogurndae (syn. Amurotaenia perccotti) (Nippotaeniidea) has been introduced to Europe with its invasive host P. glenii. Pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus, is a new definitive host of Proteocephalus percae and it is reported as the second intermediate host of the bothriocephalidean cestode Triaenophorus nodulosus in Slovakia. 相似文献

According to field investigation results, specimen identification and related literatures, eight newly recorded species of alien plants in Jiangxi Province were defined, viz. Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson, Oenothera laciniata Hill, Jacquemontia tamnifolia ( Linn.) Griseb., Ipomoea lacunosa Linn., Solanum sisymbriifolium Lam., Triodanis perfoliata (Linn.) Nieuwl., Erigeron philadelphicus Linn. and Bromus catharticus Vahl. These species have already established population in Jiangxi Province, and some have been invaded. To provide information on parasites of Bufo bufo (toad), eyes, skin, lungs, gut and urinary bladder of individuals collected near lakes Endine and Segrino (Northern Italy) from March to April 1999 were recorded in laboratory. A total of five nematode species were classified: Oswaldocruzia filiformis, Oxysomatium brevicaudatum, Cosmocerca ornata, Neyraplectana schneideri were found in the intestine and rectum and Rhabdias sphaerocephala in the lungs. To evaluate the potential invasiveness of pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus introduced to northwestern European inland waters, growth and reproduction traits were examined in ten populations along
a trajectory spanning northwestern Europe (Norway, England, Holland, Belgium and France) and evaluated in light of published
dataset from Europe. In the 848 pumpkinseed captured, maximum age was 3–4 years, with a sex ratio near unity in all but one
population. Significant variations with increasing latitude were observed in adult growth (age 2–3 increment in total length,
TL) and mean age at maturity (A
M), with non-significant variations observed in juvenile growth (TL at age 2), sex ratio and gonado-somatic index. As observed
elsewhere in Europe, mean A
M decreased significantly with increasing TL at age 2. Using this relationship, which has been proposed elsewhere as a potential
predictive model of pumpkinseed invasiveness, eight of the ten populations could be provisionally categorized as ‘non-invasive’
(five populations), ‘transitional’ (one population) and ‘potentially invasive’ (two populations), with two populations not
categorized due to insufficient data. Based on the available knowledge on each population, the relationship between juvenile
growth and age at maturity appeared to predict reasonably the status of pumpkinseed in northwestern Europe and its applicability

In June 2009 we organized a botanical student excursion to the eastern part of Sardinia, Italy. On this occasion we were able to collect and identify over 80 species of microfungi growing on higher plants. The collecting sites were spread over a large area, among them were La Caletta, Capo Comino, Monte Albo, Cala Gonone, Monte Maccione, San Teodoro, Capo Testa. The collected microfungi were parasitic or saprophytic; Basidiomycotina (Uredinales), Ascomycotina and Deuteromycotina (Hyphomycetes, Coelomycetes) were predominant. Examples are Pezicula corticola (J?rg.) NANNF. (new for Sardinia), on Pyrus communis. Puccinia chamaecyparissi TROTT. (new for Sardinia), on Santolina insularis. Sphaceloma oleae CICC. and GRANITI (new for Sardinia) and Phlyctema vagabunda DESM. (new for Sardinia), on Olea europaea and Arbutus unedo. Puccinia pseudosphaeria MONT. (new for Sardinia), on Sonchus oleraceus. Discula umbrinella (BERK. and BR.) SUTTON (new for Sardinia)(D. quercina WEST. and BARK), on Quercus coccifera. Zaghouania phillyreae PAT. A survey was made of the distribution of introduced vascular plants on Marion and Prince Edward Islands. The results of this
survey were compared to results of previous surveys (1965/66, 1975, 1981, 1989). Four new introductions to Marion Island have
taken place, three of which involved species that had been introduced in the past, but had disappeared or were eradicated.
Eighteen species of alien vascular plants are now known from Marion Island. Of these, three were not observed during the present
survey, and another three have been eradicated. Many of the naturalised aliens are still increasing markedly in area and/or
in numbers. Rates of spread of up to 300 m year−1 occur. Three alien vascular species occur on Prince Edward Island. Two are recent introductions, presumably transported to
this island from neighbouring Marion Island by wind or birds.

Although fishes are ectotherms they are nevertheless able to thermoregulate behaviorally by selecting appropriate water temperatures (1). In a temperature gradient fish will congregate to a species-specific range of preferred temperature (“final thermal referendum”) which is unaffected by previous thermal history of the individual (2,3). Several aquatic (and terrestrial) ectothermic vertebrates have been found to exhibit “behavioral fever” which is manifested as an increase in preferred temperature above the final thermal preferendum (4). Fever can be elicited by pyrogens: whole bacteria (alive or killed), components of bacterial cellwall (endotoxins), endogenous pyrogens, prostaglandins or from several other sources (5). Since the results with fever induction in fish using whole bacteria or endotoxins are very scarce the aim of the present work was to compare possible thermoregulatory effects of endotoxins and prostaglandins in the same species (Lepomis gibbosus, L.) by means of identical methods. 相似文献

I investigated the nest association of pumpkinseeds and golden shiners in an upstate New York pond. Golden shiners spawned
in about one-third of pumpkinseed nests. Field observations indicate that golden shiners preferred to spawn in nests of male
pumpkinseeds that attracted conspecific females, and avoided nests of pumpkinseeds that failed to do so. Golden shiners did
not spawn in any of the nests that I kept clean experimentally after abandonment by male pumpkinseeds, suggesting that a clean
nest without a guarding pumpkinseed is not enough to attract shiners to spawn. In field experiments, shiner eggs that were
placed away from pumpkinseed nests suffered significantly higher losses to predation than those in the nests. This indicates
that golden shiners benefit from spawning in pumpkinseed nests through the protection of their young by the host pumpkinseed.

Three proteinases named as P1, P2 and P3, were isolated from European sheatfish (Silurus glanis L.) gastric mucosa by salting-out of (NH4)2SO4, gel-chromatography on Sephadex G-75 and ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. Isoelectric points of isolated proteinases were determined by isoelectric focusing and were equal to 1.9, 3.2 and 4.75 respectively for P1, P2 and P3. The molecular weight of P1 was 39,800 Da and proteinases P2 and P3 had a molecular weight of 30,200 Da. The optimum pH for three peptidases isolated from sheatfish gastric mucosa and maximum stability of these enzymes were found at acidic pH. Morphological plasticity can influence adaptive divergence when it affects fitness components such as foraging performance. We induced morphological variation in pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) ecomorphs and tested for effects on foraging performance. Young-of-year pumpkinseed sunfish from littoral and pelagic lake habitats were reared each on a 'specialist diet' representing their native habitat-specific prey, or a 'generalist diet' reflecting a combination of native and non-native prey. Specialist and generalist diets, respectively, induced divergent and intermediate body forms. Specialists had the highest capture success on their native prey whereas generalist forms were inferior. Specialists faced trade-offs across prey types. However, pelagic specialists also had the highest intake rate on both prey types suggesting that foraging trade-offs are relaxed when prey are abundant. This increases the likelihood of a resource polymorphism because the specialized pelagic form can be favoured by directional selection when prey are abundant and by diversifying selection when prey resources are restricted. 相似文献

Numerous species of freshwater fish are known to be site specific, yet the ecological and behavioral factors influencing home range size have rarely been examined. In this study we examine aggression, predator avoidance and feeding rate in juvenile pumpkinseed sunfish as a function of location within their home range. We also compare the behavior of individuals within their home range with individuals that were displaced from their home range by being transplanted from one pond to another. Juvenile pumpkinseeds had a higher feeding rate in the center of their home range than on the periphery. Transplanted juveniles did not adopt a restricted home range over a 3-wk period and had a lower feeding rate than residents in the same pond. Aggression and predator avoidance do not appear to be important determinants of home range size in our study. 相似文献

European catfish (Silurus glanis) fingerlings (2 to 4 g each) were tested for susceptibility to channel catfish virus (CCV). They had supported CCV replication at 2 days after intraperitoneal injection with 0.1 ml of saline containing 105 TCID50. Homogenized visceral organs (liver, kidney and spleen) contained 104 TCID50/0.1 ml at 2 days post inoculation (PI) but at 4 days the titer decreased to 101 TCID50. Bathing European catfish in CCV yielded only one positive sample with à titer of 100.83 TCID50 per 0.1 ml of tissue. No clinical signs of CCV developed and no virus related deaths occurred. 相似文献
