This report investigates physical changes associated with the short-term inhibition of root elongation in intact maize seedlings (Zea mays L. vs. Halamish) by exogenous auxin. Movement of root tips was assayed by video microscopy in control roots, roots grown for 45 min in 10–6 M indole3-acetic acid (IAA), or roots chilled for 3 min at 11°C. IAA and chilling treatments similarly reduced root elongation rates (from 29 ± 6 m min–1 to 6 ± 2 m min–1). Initial rates of root tip contraction induced by 300 mOsmol mannitol were used to calculate tissue contractibility values. These allowed a comparison of effects of IAA and chilling treatments on apparent rates of water transport out of the root tip tissues. Chilling treatment reduced root tip contractibility by 66%, whereas IAA had much less effect (26% reduction). Roots were also exposed to an osmotic jump treatment; the initial osmotically induced increase in elongation rate was used to determine root tip extensibility values. Both IAA and chilling treatments reduced root tip extensibilities by 57%. Inhibition of wall-yielding properties, rather than hydraulic limitations, appeared to be primarily associated with inhibition of intact root tip elongation by exogenous IAA.  相似文献

Osmotic adjustment in leaves of sorghum in response to water deficits   总被引:17,自引:12,他引:17       下载免费PDF全文
Jones MM 《Plant physiology》1978,61(1):122-126
The relationships among the total water potential, osmotic potential, turgor potential, and relative water content were determined for leaves of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench cvs. `RS 610' and `Shallu') with three different histories of water stress. Plants were adequately watered (control), or the soil was allowed to dry slowly until the predawn leaf water potential reached either −0.4 megapascal (MPa) (treatment A) or −1.6 MPa (treatment B). Severe soil and plant water deficits developed sooner after cessation of watering in `Shallu' than in `RS 610', but no significant differences in osmotic adjustment or tissue water relations were observed between the two cultivars. In both cultivars, the stress treatments altered the relationship between leaf water potential and relative water content, resulting in the previously stressed plants maintaining higher tissue water contents than control plants at the same leaf water potential. The osmotic potential at full turgor in the control sorghum was −0.7 MPa: stress pretreatment significantly lowered the osmotic potential to −1.1 and −1.6 MPa in stress treatments A and B, respectively. As a result of this osmotic adjustment, leaf turgor potentials at a given value of leaf water potential exceeded those of the control plants by 0.15 to 0.30 MPa in treatment A and by 0.5 to 0.65 MPa in treatment B. However, zero turgor potential occurred at approximately the same value of relative water content (94%) irrespective of previous stress history. From the relationship between turgor potential and relative water content there was an approximate doubling of the volumetric elastic modulus, i.e. a halving of tissue elasticity, as a result of stress preconditioning. The influence of stress preconditioning on the moisture release curve is discussed.  相似文献

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) leaf blades elongated 33% faster at continuous low than at continuous high irradiance (60 versus 300 micromoles per second per square meter photosynthetic photon flux density) when temperature of the leaf elongation zone was held constant at 21°C. Increased rate of elongation was associated with a near proportional increase in length of the elongation zone (+38%). In contrast, growth in width and thickness was decreased at low irradiance, resulting in only a 12% increase in leaf area production and 5% less total growth-associated water deposition than at high irradiance. At low irradiance dry matter (DM) import into the elongation zone was 28% less, and 55% less DM was used per unit leaf area produced. DM use in synthesis of structural components (i.e. DM less water-soluble carbohydrates) was only 13% less at low irradiance, whereas water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) deposition was 43% less. The lower rate of WSC deposition at low irradiance was associated with a higher net rate of monosaccharide deposition (+39%), whereas net deposition rates for sucrose (−27%) and fructan (−56%) were less than at high irradiance. Still, at low irradiance, net fructan accumulation accounted for 64% of WSC deposition, i.e. 25% of DM import, demonstrating the high sink strength of the leaf elongation zone.  相似文献

Light acclimation during and after leaf expansion in soybean   总被引:10,自引:7,他引:3       下载免费PDF全文
Soybean plants (Glycine max var. Ransom) were grown at light intensities of 850 and 250 μeinsteins m−2 sec−1 of photosynthetically active radiation. A group of plants was shifted from each environment into the other environment 24 hours before the beginning of the experiment. Net photosynthetic rates and stomatal conductances were measured at 2,000 and 100 μeinsteins m−2 sec−1 photosynthetically active radiation on the 1st, 2nd, and 5th days of the experiment to determine the time course of photosynthetic light adaptation. The following factors were also measured: dark respiration, leaf water potential, leaf thickness, internal surface area per external surface area, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic unit size and number, specific leaf weight, and activities of malate dehydrogenase, and glycolate oxidase. Comparisons were made with plants maintained in either 850 or 250 μeinsteins m−2 sec−1 environments. Changes in photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, leaf anatomy, leaf water potential, photosynthetic unit size, and glycolate oxidase activity occurred upon altering the light environment, and were complete within 1 day, whereas chlorophyll content, numbers of photosynthetic units, specific leaf weight, and malate dehydrogenase activity showed slower changes. Differences in photosynthetic rates at high light were largely accounted for by internal surface area differences with low environmental light associated with low internal area and low photosynthetic rate. An exception to this was the fact that plants grown at 250 μeinsteins m−2 sec−1 then switched to 850 μeinsteins m−2 sec−1 showed lower photosynthesis at high light than any other treatment. This was associated with higher glycolate oxidase and malate dehydrogenase activity. Photosynthesis at low light was higher in plants kept at or switched to the lower light environment. This increased rate was associated with larger photosynthetic unit size, and lower dark respiration and malate dehydrogenase activity. Both anatomical and physiological changes with environmental light occurred even after leaf expansion was complete and both were important in determining photosynthetic response to light.  相似文献

Recent genome-wide meta-analyses identified 157 loci associated with cross-sectional lipid traits. Here we tested whether these loci associate (singly and in trait-specific genetic risk scores [GRS]) with longitudinal changes in total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels in a population-based prospective cohort from Northern Sweden (the GLACIER Study). We sought replication in a southern Swedish cohort (the MDC Study; N = 2,943). GLACIER Study participants (N = 6,064) were genotyped with the MetaboChip array. Up to 3,495 participants had 10-yr follow-up data available in the GLACIER Study. The TC- and TG-specific GRSs were strongly associated with change in lipid levels (β = 0.02 mmol/l per effect allele per decade follow-up, P = 2.0×10−11 for TC; β = 0.02 mmol/l per effect allele per decade follow-up, P = 5.0×10−5 for TG). In individual SNP analysis, one TC locus, apolipoprotein E (APOE) rs4420638 (β = 0.12 mmol/l per effect allele per decade follow-up, P = 2.0×10−5), and two TG loci, tribbles pseudokinase 1 (TRIB1) rs2954029 (β = 0.09 mmol/l per effect allele per decade follow-up, P = 5.1×10−4) and apolipoprotein A-I (APOA1) rs6589564 (β = 0.31 mmol/l per effect allele per decade follow-up, P = 1.4×10−8), remained significantly associated with longitudinal changes for the respective traits after correction for multiple testing. An additional 12 loci were nominally associated with TC or TG changes. In replication analyses, the APOE rs4420638, TRIB1 rs2954029, and APOA1 rs6589564 associations were confirmed (P≤0.001). In summary, trait-specific GRSs are robustly associated with 10-yr changes in lipid levels and three individual SNPs were strongly associated with 10-yr changes in lipid levels.  相似文献

Resistant starch (RS) enrichments were made using chemostats inoculated with human feces from two individuals at two dilution rates (D = 0.03 h−1 and D = 0.30 h−1) to select for slow- and fast-growing amylolytic communities. The fermentations were studied by analysis of short-chain fatty acids, amylase and α-glucosidase activities, and viable counts of the predominant culturable populations and the use of 16S rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes. Considerable butyrate was produced at D = 0.30 h−1, which corresponded with reduced branched-chain fatty acid formation. At both dilution rates, high levels of extracellular amylase activity were produced, while α-glucosidase was predominantly cell associated. Bacteroides and bifidobacteria predominated at the low dilution rate, whereas saccharolytic clostridia became more important at D = 0.30 h−1. Microscopic examination showed that within 48 h of inoculation, one particular bacterial morphotype predominated in RS enrichments at D = 0.30 h−1. This organism attached apically to RS granules and formed rosette-like structures which, with glycocalyx formation, agglomerated to form biofilm networks in the planktonic phase. Attempts to isolate this bacterium in pure culture were repeatedly unsuccessful, although a single colony was eventually obtained. On the basis of its 16S rDNA sequence, this RS-degrading, butyrate-producing organism was identified as being a previously unidentified group I Clostridium sp. A 16S rRNA-targeted probe was designed using this sequence and used to assess the abundance of the population in the enrichments. At 240 h, its contributions to total rRNA in the chemostats were 5 and 23% at D = 0.03 and 0.30 h−1, respectively. This study indicates that bacterial populations with significant metabolic potential can be overlooked using culture-based methodologies. This may provide a paradigm for explaining the discrepancy between the low numbers of butyrate-producing bacteria that are isolated from fecal samples and the actual production of butyrate.  相似文献

Diurnal changes in the vertical profiles of irradiance incident upon the adaxial leaf surface (I), leaf resistance (r1), leaf water potential (ψ), osmotic potential (π), and turgor potential (P) were followed concurrently in crops of maize (Zea mays L. cv. Pa602A), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench cv. RS 610), and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Havanna Seed 211) on several days in 1968 to 1970 when soil water potentials were low. The r1, measured with a ventilated diffusion porometer, of the leaves in the upper canopy decreased temporarily after sunrise [~0530 hours Eastern Standard Time] as I increased, but then r1 increased again between 0700 and 0830 hr Eastern Standard Time as the ψ, measured with a pressure chamber, decreased rapidly from the values of −7, −4 and −6 bars at sunrise to minimal values of −18, −22 and −15 bars near midday in the maize, sorghum, and tobacco, respectively. The π, measured with a vapor pressure osmometer, also decreased after sunrise, but not to the same degree as the decrease in ψ, so that a P of zero was reached in some leaves between 0730 and 0800 hours. The lower (more negative) π of leaves in the upper canopy than those in the lower canopy gave the upper leaves a higher P at a given ψ than the lower leaves in all three species; leaves at intermediate heights had an intermediate P. This difference between leaves at the three heights in the canopy was maintained at all values of ψ. The r1 remained unchanged over a wide range of P and then increased markedly at a P of 2 bars in maize, −1 bar in sorghum, and near zero P in tobacco: r1 also remained constant until ψ decreased to −17, −20, and −13 bars in leaves at intermediate heights in maize, sorghum, and tobacco, respectively. In all three species r1 of leaves in the upper canopy increased at more negative values of ψ than those at the base of the canopy, and in tobacco, leaves in the upper canopy wilted at more negative values of ψ than those in the lower canopy.  相似文献

Background

Parkinson disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative process that leads to a selective loss of dopaminergic neurons, mainly in the basal ganglia of the brain. Numerous studies have analyzed the ability of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to detect retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness abnormalities and changes in PD, but the results have not always been consistent. Therefore, we carried out a meta-analysis to evaluate the RNFL thickness measured with OCT in PD.

Methods and Findings

Case-control studies were selected through an electronic search of the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, PUBMED and EMBASE. For the continuous outcomes, we calculated the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The statistical analysis was performed by RevMan 5.0 software. Thirteen case-control studies were included in the present meta-analysis, containing a total of 644 eyes in PD patients and 604 eyes in healthy controls. The results of our study showed that there was a significant reduction in average RNFL thickness in patients with PD compared to healthy controls (WMD = −5.76, 95% CI: −8.99 to −2.53, P = 0.0005). Additionally, differences of RNFL thickness in superior quadrant (WMD = −4.44, 95% CI: −6.93 to −1.94, P = 0.0005), inferior quadrant (WMD = −7.56, 95% CI: −11.33 to −3.78, P<0.0001), nasal quadrant (WMD = −3.12, 95% CI: −5.63 to −0.61, P = 0.01) and temporal quadrant (WMD = −4.63, 95% CI: −7.20 to −2.06, P = 0.0004) were all significant between the two groups.

Conclusion

In view of these results and the noninvasive nature of OCT technology, we surmise that OCT could be a useful tool for evaluating the progression of the Parkinson disease.

The physiological bases for genetic differences in leaf growth rates were examined in two genotypes of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) selected for a 50% difference in leaf elongation rate. Genotypes had similar dark respiration rates and concentrations of carbohydrate fractions in the leaf meristem and in each daily growth segment above the meristem. Dark respiration rates and concentrations of nonreducing sugars, fructans, and takadiastase-soluble carbohydrates were highest in leaf intercalary meristems and declined acropetally with tissue age. Concentrations of reducing sugars were 1.0% of dry weight in leaf meristems, 3.7% of dry weight in tissue adjacent to the meristem, then decreased progressively with distance from the meristem. Glucose, fructose, and myo-inositol comprised over 90% of the monosaccharides present in leaf meristems. Soluble protein concentration was 9.7 milligrams per gram fresh weight in leaf meristems, 5.5 milligrams per gram in tissues immediately above the meristem and, thereafter, increased linearly with distance from the meristem.

Leaf meristems of the genotype exhibiting rapid leaf elongation contained 30% more soluble protein than those of the genotype selected for slow leaf elongation. The 4-fold difference in size of the leaf meristem appeared to be more important in influencing leaf elongation than were other characteristics examined.

Background and Purpose

Although total cerebral blood flow (tCBF) is known to be related to age, less is known regarding the associations between tCBF and the morphologic changes of the brain accompanying cerebral aging. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether total cerebral blood flow (tCBF) is related to white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume and/or cerebral atrophy. Furthermore, we investigate whether tCBF should be expressed in mL/min, as was done in all previous MR studies, or in mL/100 mL/min, which yielded good results in precious SPECT, PET and perfusion MRI studies investigating regional cerebral blood flow.

Materials and Methods

Patients were included from the nested MRI sub-study of the PROSPER study. Dual fast spin echo and FLAIR images were obtained in all patients. In addition, single slice phase contrast MR angiography was used for flow measurements in the internal carotids and vertebral arteries. tCBF was expressed in both mL/min and mL/100 mL/min.

Results

We found a significant correlation between tCBF in mL/min and both age (r = −.124; p = p≤.001) and parenchymal volume (r = 0.430; p≤.001). We found no association between tCBF in mL/min and %-atrophy (r = −.077; p = .103) or total WMH volume (r = −.069; p = .148). When tCBF was expressed in mL/100 mL/min the correlation between tCBF and age was no longer found (r = −.001; p = .985). Multivariate regression analyses corrected for age showed a significant correlation between tCBF in mL/100 mL/min and WMH volume (r = −.106; p = .044). No significant association between tCBF in mL/100 mL/min and %-atrophy was found.

Conclusion

From this study we conclude that, when evaluating tCBF alterations due to various pathologies, tCBF should in mL/100 mL/min instead of mL/min. Furthermore, changes or differences in WMH volume should be accounted for.  相似文献

Stress-induced osmotic adjustment in growing regions of barley leaves   总被引:8,自引:11,他引:8       下载免费PDF全文
Young barley seedlings were stressed using nutrient solutions containing NaCl or polyethylene glycol and measurements were made of leaf growth, water potential, osmotic potential and turgor values of both growing (basal) and nongrowing (blade) tissues. Rapid growth responses similar to those noted for corn (Plant Physiology 48: 631-636) were obtained using either NaCl or polyethylene glycol treatments by which exposure of seedlings to solutions with water potential values of −3 to −11 bars effected an immediate cessation of leaf elongation with growth resumption after several minutes or hours. Latent periods were increased and growth resumption rates were decreased as water potential values of nutrient solutions were lowered. In unstressed transpiring seedlings, water potential and osmotic potential values of leaf basal tissues were usually −6 to −8 bars, and −12 to −14 bars, respectively. These tissues began to adjust osmotically when exposed to any of the osmotic solutions, and hourly reductions of 1 to 2 bars in both water potential and osmotic potential values usually occurred for the first 2 to 4 hours, but reduction rates thereafter were lower. When seedlings were exposed to solutions with water potential values lower than those of the leaf basal tissues, growth resumed about the time water potential values of those tissues fell to that of the nutrient solution. After 1 to 3 days of seedling exposure to solutions with different water potential values, cumulative leaf elongation was reduced as the water potential values of the root medium were lowered. Reductions in water potential and osmotic potential values of tissues in leaf basal regions paralleled growth reductions, but turgor value was largely unaffected by stress. In contrast, water potential, osmotic potential, and turgor values of leaf blades were usually changed slightly regardless of the degree and duration of stress, and blade water potential values were always higher than water potential values of the basally located cells. It is hypothesized that blades have high water potential values and are generally unresponsive to stress because water in most of the mesophyll cells in this area does not exchange readily with water present in the transpiration stream.  相似文献

Purpose

To examine a potential association between longitudinal changes in intraocular pressure (IOP), arterial blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) in a population-based setting.

Methods

The longitudinal population-based Beijing Eye Study included 2355 subjects with an age of 45+ years who were examined in 2006 and in 2011. The participants underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination including tonometry and measurement of arterial blood pressure and BMI.

Results

Data on IOP, arterial blood pressure and BMI measured in 2006 and in 2011 were available for 2257 (95.8%) subjects with a mean age of 59.5±9.7 years. The mean change in IOP was −1.25±2.26 mm Hg, mean change in mean blood pressure −7.4±12.1 mmHg, and mean change in BMI was 0.01±2.04 kg/m2. In multivariate analysis, the 5-year change in IOP was significantly associated with a higher change in mean blood pressure (P<0.001; standardized regression coefficient Beta:0.11; regression coefficient B:0.02; 95% confidence interval (CI):0.01,0.03) after adjusting for younger age (P<0.001;Beta:−0.18;B:−0.04;95% CI:−0.05,−0.03), shorter body stature (P = 0.002;Beta:−0.06;B:−0.06;95% CI:−0.03,−0.01), thicker central corneal thickness (P<0.001;Beta:0.19;B:0.02;95% CI:0.01,0.02), deeper anterior chamber depth (P = 0.01;Beta:0.05;B:0.33;95% CI:0.07,0.60), and lower intraocular pressure at baseline (P<0.001;Beta:−0.56;B:−0.42;95% CI:−0.45,−0.39). If the analysis included only longitudinal parameters, the change in IOP was significantly associated with a higher change in mean arterial blood pressure (P<0.001;Beta:0.10;B:0.02;95% CI:0.01,0.03) and a higher change in body mass index (P<0.04;Beta:0.04;B:0.04;95% CI:0.01,0.09).

Conclusions

In the 5-year follow-up of our population-based sample, a change in IOP was associated with a corresponding change in arterial blood pressure and with a corresponding change in body mass index. These longitudinal data support the notion of a physiological relationship between arterial blood pressure, intraocular pressure and body mass index. These findings may be of interest for the discussion of the pathogenesis of glaucomatous optic neuropathy.  相似文献

Transient responses of cell turgor (P) and root elongation to changes in water potential were measured in maize (Zea mays L.) to evaluate mechanisms of adaptation to water stress. Changes of water potential were induced by exposing roots to solutions of KCl and mannitol (osmotic pressure about 0.3 MPa). Prior to a treatment, root elongation was about 1.2 mm h-1 and P was about 0.67 MPa across the cortex of the expansion zone (3-10 mm behind the root tip). Upon addition of an osmoticum, P decreased rapidly and growth stopped completely at pressure below approximately 0.6 MPa, which indicated that the yield threshold (Ytrans,1) was just below the initial turgor. Turgor recovered partly within the next 30 min and reached a new steady value at about 0.53 MPa. The root continued to elongate as soon as P rose above a new threshold (Ytrans,2) of about 0.45 MPa. The time between Ytrans,1 and Ytrans,2 was about 10 min. During this transition turgor gradients of as much as 0.15 MPa were measured across the cortex. They resulted from a faster rate of turgor recovery of cells deeper inside the tissue compared with cells near the root periphery. Presumably, the phloem was the source of the compounds for the osmotic adjustment. Turgor recovery was restricted to the expansion zone, as was confirmed by measurements of pressure kinetics in mature root tissue. Withdrawal of the osmoticum caused an enormous transient increase of elongation, which was related to only a small initial increase of P. Throughout the experiment, the relationship between root elongation rate and turgor was nonlinear. Consequently, when Y were calculated from steady-state conditions of P and root elongation before and after the osmotic treatment, Yss was only 0.21 MPa and significantly smaller compared with the values obtained from direct measurements (0.42-0.64 MPa). Thus, we strongly emphasize the need for measurements of short-term responses of elongation and turgor to determine cell wall mechanics appropriately. Our results indicate that the rate of solute flow into the growth zone could become rate-limiting for cell expansion under conditions of mild water stress.  相似文献

We investigated the possibility of interspecific water transfer in an alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) association. An alfalfa plant was grown through two vertically stacked plastic tubes. A 5 centimeter air gap between tubes was bridged by alfalfa roots. Five-week old maize plants with roots confined to the top tube were not watered, while associated alfalfa roots had free access to water in the bottom tube (the −/+ treatment). Additional treatments included: top and bottom tubes watered (+/+), top and bottom tubes droughted (−/−), and top tube droughted after removal of alfalfa root bridges and routine removal of alfalfa tillers (−*). Predawn leaf water potential of maize in the −/+ treatment fell to −1.5 megapascals 13 days after the start of drought; thereafter, predawn and midday potentials were maintained near −1.9 megapascals. Leaf water potentials of maize in the −/− and −* treatments declined steadily; all plants in these treatments were completely desiccated before day 50. High levels of tritium activity were detected in water extracted from both alfalfa and maize leaves after 3H2O was injected into the bottom −/+ tube at day 70 or later. Maize in the −/+ treatment was able to survive an otherwise lethal period of drought by utilizing water lost by alfalfa roots.  相似文献

The interactive effects of a Neotyphodium endophyte and hydropriming on Festuca sinensis seeds were determined within a germination cabinet and under greenhouse conditions. Seed germination was optimized by an imbibition period of 15–30 min. Endophyte combined with hydropriming significantly (P < 0.05) promoted interim germination (at osmotic potentials of ?0.3 to ?0.6 MPa), germination rate (?1.2 MPa), vigor index of seeds (0 to ?1.2 MPa), length of coleoptile and radicle (?0.3 to ?1.2 MPa) and seedling dry weight (0 to ?1.2 MPa). Based on a long-term growth experiment, their interactive effects resulted in significant (P < 0.05) increases of above-ground dry weight, seedling heights during week 7–13 and tiller and leaf number during week 11–13 (P < 0.05), and greatly (P < 0.05) increased leaf elongation during week 7–11. Presence of the Neotyphodium endophyte combined with a seed hydropriming treatment is an effective strategy to improve seed germination and plant growth of F. sinensis.  相似文献

A leaf cuvette has been adapted for use with a pulse-modulation fluorometer and an open gas exchange system. Leaf water potential (ψ) was decreased by withholding watering from Digitalis lanata EHRH. plants. At different stages of water deficiency the photochemical (qQ) and nonphotochemical (qE) fluorescence quenching was determined during the transition between darkness and light-induced steady state photosynthesis of the attached leaves. In addition, the steady state CO2 and H2O gas exchange was recorded. Following a decrease of leaf water potential with increasing water deficiency, the transition of photochemical quenching was almost unaffected, whereas nonphotochemical quenching increased. This is indicative of an enhanced thylakoid membrane energization during the transition and is interpreted as a partial inhibition of either the ATP generating or the ATP consuming reaction sequences. Complete reversion of the stress induced changes was achieved within 6 hours after rewatering. In contrast to the variations during transition, the final steady state values of qQ and qE remained unchanged over the entire stress range from −0.7 to −2.5 megapascals. From these results we conclude that, once established, electron transport via photosystem II and the transmembrane proton gradient remain unaffected by water stress. These data are indicative of a protective mechanism against photoinhibition during stress, when net CO2 uptake is limited.  相似文献

Understanding the scaling between leaf size and leafing intensity (leaf number per stem size) is crucial for comprehending theories about the leaf costs and benefits in the leaf size–twig size spectrum. However, the scaling scope of leaf size versus leafing intensity changes along the twig leaf size variation in different leaf habit species remains elusive. Here, we hypothesize that the numerical value of scaling exponent for leaf mass versus leafing intensity in twig is governed by the minimum leaf mass versus maximum leaf mass (M min versus M max) and constrained to be ≤−1.0. We tested this hypothesis by analyzing the twigs of 123 species datasets compiled in the subtropical mountain forest. The standardized major axis regression (SMA) analyses showed the M min scaled as the 1.19 power of M max and the ‐α (−1.19) were not statistically different from the exponents of M min versus leafing intensity in whole data. Across leaf habit groups, the M max scaled negatively and isometrically with respect to leafing intensity. The pooled data''s scaling exponents ranged from −1.14 to −0.96 for M min and M max versus the leafing intensity based on stem volume (LIV). In the case of M min and M max versus the leafing intensity based on stem mass (LIM), the scaling exponents ranged from −1.24 to −1.04. Our hypothesis successfully predicts that the scaling relationship between leaf mass and leafing intensity is constrained to be ≤−1.0. More importantly, the lower limit to scaling of leaf mass and leafing intensity may be closely correlated with M min versus M max. Besides, constrained by the maximum leaf mass expansion, the broad scope range between leaf size and number may be insensitive to leaf habit groups in subtropical mountain forest.  相似文献

At several heights and times of day within a crop of Zea mays, internal leaf diffusion resistance (ri) and external boundary layer diffusion resistance (ra) were evaluated by measuring the temperature of a transpiring and a non-transpiring leaf (simulated by covering both sides of a normal leaf with strips of poly-ethylene tape), and by measuring the immediate air temperature, humidity and windspeed.

Both ra and ri increased with depth into the crop. However, ra generally was less than 10% of ri.

Profiles of latent-heat flux density and source intensity of transpiration showed that transpiration corresponded roughly to foliage distribution (with an upward shift) and were not similar to the profile of radiation absorption.

The data were compared with heat budget data. The 2 approaches yielded quite similar height distributions of transpiration per unit leaf area and total transpiration resistance.

The total crop resistance to transpiration was computed as 0.027 min cm−1. This compares to Monteith's values of 0.017 to 0.040 min cm−1 for beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), and Linacre's values of 0.015 to 0.020 min cm−1 for turf.

Malate efflux from leaf cells of the Crassulacean acid metabolism plant Kalanchoë daigremontiana Hamet et Perrier was studied using leaf slices submerged in experimental solutions. Leaves were harvested at the end of the dark phase and therefore contained high malate levels. Water potentials of solutions were varied between 0 and −5 bar using mannitol (a slowly permeating solute) and ethylene glycol (a rapidly permeating solute), respectively. Mannitol solutions of water potentials down to −5 bar considerably reduced malate efflux. The slowly permeating solute mannitol reduces both water potential and turgor potential of the cells. The water potential of a mannitol solution of −5 bar is just above plasmolyzing concentration. Malate efflux in ethylene glycol at −5 bar was only slightly smaller than at 0 bar, and much higher than in mannitol at −5 bar. Tissues in rapidly permeating ethylene glycol would have turgor potentials similar to tissues in 0.1 mm CaSO4. The results demonstrate that malate efflux depends on turgor potential rather than on water potential of the cells.  相似文献
