Features and increments of otoliths in Engraulicypris sardella were observed. The sagitta was arrowhead shaped with an obvious core and rostra, the latter being fragile and easily destroyed by extracting and grinding processes. Increments around the core were readable but not in rostra. The lapillus was round fan-shaped with an obvious core. Increments in the lapillus were clearly deposited from the core to the margin. The asteriscus had an ambiguous core that led to difficulty in discerning the first increment and had fewer increments than the lapilli. Thus, the lapillus is the most appropriate for reading otolith increments.  相似文献

Macro- and microstructures of the sagitta, asteriscus, and lapillus of juveniles of Malawian characid Hemigrammopetersius barnardi were observed. The sagittae were arrowhead shaped and showed development of rostra. Increments in the sagitta were observable until the bases of the rostra but were invisible in the rostra. The asteriscus had an irregular shape with an ambiguous core and notches at the margin. The ambiguous core of the asteriscus led to difficulty in discerning the first increment. The lapilli were round and fan shaped. Increments in the lapilli were distinct from the core to the margin. The daily increment deposition was validated by alizarin complexone treatment, and the increments increased at the rate of 1 day−1 after hatching. These features suggested that in this species the lapillus is most appropriate for daily increment analysis. The hatching months were estimated based on the lapillus increment counts, and the results showed that this species continuously hatched in the rainy season for 6 months from November to April. The growth trajectory indicated that H. barnardi attains a total length of 50 mm within 4 months of hatching.  相似文献

Features of the sagitta, asteriscus, and lapillus of laboratory-hatched larvae of the Kabyabya, Opsaridium tweddleorum, were investigated until day 33 after hatching. The sagitta was round until day 17, subsequently becoming arrowhead-shaped with the development of anterior and posterior rostra. Increments in the sagitta increased at the rate of one per day before rostrum formation. However, they were occasionally overestimated in rostrum sections as a result of subdaily increment occurrence. Furthermore, both anterior and posterior rostra were fragile, being thin and platelike, and were often damaged during the extraction and grinding processes. The lapillus was also round until day 17, thereafter becoming fan-shaped. Increments in the lapillus were distinctive from the core to the margin, usually increasing at the rate of one per day after hatching. The asteriscus appeared in fish larger than 9.15 mm in standard length (from day 17), being oval with a somewhat ambiguous core, causing difficulty in discerning the first increment. These features indicated that the lapillus was the most appropriate otolith part for daily increment analysis in this species, although the sagitta was useful before rostrum formation.  相似文献

Otolith growth increments in wild-caught alizarin complex one (ALC)-marked honmoroko Gnathopogon caerulescens were examined to verify the veracity of the age determination method in cyprinids. ALC-marked G. caerulescens recaptured from their natural environment had lapilli increment counts outside the ALC ring mark that had formed on a daily basis during the juvenile stage. This apparently being the first direct evidence of daily periodicity of otolith increment formation in wild-caught cyprinids.  相似文献

Three species of Opsaridium occur in the Lake Malawi catchment. The kabyabya Opsaridium tweddleorum is a small species restricted to inflowing rivers and streams, the mpasa Opsaridium microlepis is a large lake-dwelling species that ascends the lower reaches of inflowing rivers during the rains to spawn, and the sanjika Opsaridium microcephalum has riverine, potamodromous and lake spawning populations. Evidence for sanjika spawning in the lake itself, rather than just in rivers, is presented here in the form of observations of courting behaviour by fully mature males and females on exposed rocky shores, together with the presence of pin-head fry in areas remote from any inflowing streams during the dry season.  相似文献

This assesses features of otoliths from laboratory-reared embryos, larvae and juvenile European chub Squalius cephalus from hatching to 180 days post-hatching (dph). We observed the development of the three pairs of otoliths (lapilli, sagittae and asterisci) and more precisely shape changes, as well as timing and deposition rate of increments of the lapilli. The lapilli and the sagittae were present at hatching, whereas the asterisci formed between 20 and 30 dph. The lapillus and sagitta shapes were round until 20 dph. From 60 dph the anterior and the posterior rostra of the sagittae were well developed, but very thin, making this otolith too fragile to manipulate for further studies of shape and validation of otolith increment deposition rate. The lapilli provided reliable age estimates for free embryos, larvae and juveniles up to 120 dph. However, caution should be taken when ageing fish older than 150 dph as an underestimation was noticeable. The regression of the number of otolith increments on age showed a slope and an intercept not significantly different from 1 and 0, respectively, which indicated that otolith growth increments were deposited on a daily basis, with the first microincrement occurring at hatching. Increment counts were consistent between three interpreters, indicating a consistent and reliable age estimate. This study validates that the otolith increment deposition rate can be used to assess hatching dates and daily growth of wild S. cephalus under 150 dph and in environments similar to the conditions used in this study.  相似文献

We describe the microincrements, checks and annuli in the lapilli of the schizothoracine Ptychobarbus dipogon, an endemic species of the Tibetan plateau. We collected samples in the Yarlung Tsangpo River and its tributaries on a monthly basis (from April 2004 to August 2006). We describe the shape features of the three pairs of otoliths and document the full trajectory of lapillus development. We found that five to seven checks were clearly visible in the opaque zone of the first annulus. The pattern of 21–23 daily growth increments within each check might be explained as a lunar-induced deposition. We counted between 137 and 154 increments within the first annulus. Annuli appeared as a sequence of gradually declining increment widths, whereas false rings were characterized by abrupt checks. Our oldest estimates were 23+years for males and 44+ for females. The time of annulus completion was clearly between March and April each year using monthly marginal increments analysis. We consider the factors responsible for daily increment formation as an endogenous circadian rhythm. Environmental information, such as strong sunlight and cold water temperatures in the Tibetan Plateau, could reinforce the endogenous daily cycle. Our results provided important data addressing the ecology and population dynamics of P. dipogon.  相似文献

In this study, laboratory reared Cirrhinus molitorella from hatching through to the juvenile stage were used to validate daily increment deposition. Lapilli were suitable for ageing C. molitorella. The slope of the linear relationships between increment counts and age was not significantly different from 1 (n = 258, P > 0·05), indicating that growth increments are deposited daily. The first increment following the first‐feeding check formed 3 days post hatch (dph). One hundred and twenty‐three juveniles, ranging from 36·4 to 84·7 mm in body length (LB), were collected in the Pear River estuary from July to January in both 2014 and 2015 and used to estimate growth rate. The core in the lapillus, consisting of a single primordium, a diffuse area and the first‐feeding band, was followed by 20 narrow and poorly contrasted daily increments. Thereafter, increments were wide and well‐defined, and, finally became less distinct, but still homogenous after c. 53 dph. The mean increment width increased to the 29th increment and stayed relatively constant up to the 35th increment and then, gradually declined to the edge of the otolith. Wild juveniles were aged from 69 to 178 dph and hatched from the 15 February to 2 September. Growth rate was estimated from the adjusted linear regression of LB on age: LB = 4·37 + 0·44A (r2 = 0·60), where A = age. The radius of the core and the regularity and resolution of the increments showed some differences between reared and wild fish. These results are of value for the further study of early life traits and recruitment of C. molitorella.  相似文献

Otolith development was observed and the formation of daily growth increments in otoliths of Chinese sucker, Myxocyprinus asiaticus, was validated by monitoring known-age larvae and juveniles in the laboratory from 2003 to 2005. Otolith shape changed with larval and juvenile development, and there was an exponential relationship until a body length of 16 mm or so, and a linear relationship after a body length of 16 mm between otolith size and fish size. The first increment was identified in larvae 1 day after hatching. The regressed equations between daily age (D) and increment number in otoliths (N) were N = −0.64 + 0.96D in lapillus, and N = −0.31 + 0.98D in sagitta. The slopes were not significantly different than 1.0. This demonstrated that otolith increments in this species were formed daily and can be used for daily age determination.  相似文献

用茜素络合物对鳡鱼仔鱼进行了浸泡标记,耳石上能检测到橘红色荧光标记环。100mg/L茜素络合物溶液的标记效果较差;120mg/L和150mg/L溶液浸泡后微耳石的标记率很高,矢耳石和星耳石的标记率低。标记后耳石上的生长轮数与饲养天数间呈一一对应关系,相关方程为:N=0.2663 0.9276D(n=68,r~2=0.9664)。方程的斜率0.9276与1无显著差异,证明生长轮确系日轮。鱼体长与微耳石、矢耳石及星耳石的直径间呈显著的线性关系,相关方程为:BL=66.8723LD 2.7064(n=73,r~2=0.8867),BL=22.7839SD 6.6066(n=49,r~2=0.8525),BL=47.6079AD 3.5660(n=71,r~2=0.9012)。  相似文献

 Extremely small animals including fishes have been reported with discussion of the causes and consequences of their miniaturization. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, very early (i.e., 23–60 days old and 42–67 days old) sexual maturity in two groups of gobioid fishes (Schindleria and Paedogobius, respectively) in warm water, based on the otolith increments. The generation time of Schindleria is the shortest known among vertebrates under natural conditions. We discuss the occurrence and evolutionary significance of the progenesis found in gobioid fishes. Transverse sections of otoliths from Atlantic cod Gadus morhua from the Baltic Sea revealed narrow growth increments. The widths of these increments corresponded to daily increments from fish with known otolith growth rates and were therefore assumed to be daily increments. They exhibited a distinct pattern with increasing distance from the primary primordium. A series of zones with clearly distinguishable increments, first with increasing then with decreasing widths in a dome‐shaped pattern, were separated by zones where no regular increment structure was visible. Increment width seemed to be tightly coupled to the annual cycle in environmental temperature at a depth of 30–60 m, where G. morhua predominantly reside. Between 135 and 200 increments occurred within the different zones, with a non‐significant trend towards lower increment numbers and widths with distance from the primary primordium of the otolith. Increment formation apparently ceased at temperatures < 5–6° C, but growth during the cold months corresponded closely with estimated growth rates. The increment patterns seemed to reflect annual cycles in environmental temperature, and the count of the increment cycles may thus be a promising tool for the determination of the true age of Baltic G. morhua.  相似文献

The lower and upper incisors has been studied in striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius), yellow-necked mice (A. flavicollis), and migratory hamsters (Cricetulus migratorius) trapped in the Volgograd Region from April to March. The incisors of all animals have been found to have a striated surface, with series of slight ridges and grooves. As shown by analyzing the incisors of animals labeled with tetracycline, these are daily increments of dentin. The total numbers of increments (the period of complete tooth renewal) in the upper and lower incisors of the same animal are similar, but the degrees of their distinctness can be different. The number of daily increments increases but their width (daily growth rate) decreases with age even in adult animals and, in addition, varies by seasons. These two trends—the decrease in tooth increment with age and its seasonal variation—have proved to mask each other when an uneven-aged sample of animals trapped over several months is studied. Therefore, the season of death of an animal cannot be reliably estimated from the width of daily tooth increment unless the age of this animal is taken into account. The increment width in young animals in autumn may be the same as in older animals in spring and summer. In attempts to use the incisor surface sculpture for determining the season of animal death, it is necessary to separate the young from adults (at least by the criterion of incisor length). The decrease of increment width with age and its seasonal variation in the absence of obvious changes in the diet and pattern of incisor attrition indicate that the incisor growth rate is subject to age-dependent and seasonal changes, as is the growth rate of the organism as a whole. The distinctness and internal structure of daily increments also vary depending on animal age and species, which is due apparently to differences in the circadian rhythms of incisor growth. The presence of one or, less frequently, several grooves within a daily increment, which has occurred in all species studied, is evidence for not only circadian but also ultradian rhythms in the growth of incisors.  相似文献

Age and growth were studied for Schizothorax waltoni in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, southwest of China, from April 2004 to September 2006. A total of 201 specimens were collected ranging from 110 to 580 mm in standard length (SL). In contrast to other otoliths, sectioned lapillus showed a clear pattern of alternating opaque and hyaline zones. Marginal increment analyses showed that the increments, each composed of one opaque and one hyaline zone, are deposited annually. Opaque edges were prevalent from May to August. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters based on sectioned otolith data were L t  = 689.8{1 − exp[0.051 (+ 3.275)]} for males, and L t  = 691.1{1 − exp[0.056 (+ 2.466)]} for females. The slow growth and long life indicate that S. waltoni is vulnerable to overfishing and that harvesting strategies for the species should be conservative.  相似文献

  • Genetic differences among freshwater fish populations are dependent on life‐history characteristics of the species, including the range of adult dispersal and the extent of homing to natal breeding grounds. However, the effects of variation in such characteristics on population genetic connectivity are rarely studied comparatively among closely related species.
  • We studied population genetic structure within three congeneric cyprinid species from the Lake Malawi catchment that differ substantially in life‐history traits and conservation status, using a combination of microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA markers. Mpasa (Opsaridium microlepis) is a large (70 cm total length) migratory species that spawns in rivers, but as an adult is exclusively known from the main lake body. Sanjika (Opsaridium microcephalum), is a medium size (30 cm total length) species that exists in lake breeding, river‐lake migratory and apparently landlocked populations. Dwarf sanjika (Opsaridium tweddleorum) is a small non‐migratory species (15 cm total length) that persists in small tributaries surrounding the main lake and adjoining rivers.
  • The results revealed striking differences among the three species in spatial genetic structuring. The river‐lake migratory mpasa showed only weak yet significant population genetic structure within the main Lake Malawi catchment, suggesting that there is no strong natal homing. The habitat‐generalist sanjika showed only weak spatial genetic differentiation at microsatellite loci within the Lake Malawi catchment, but moderate structure in mitochondrial DNA, potentially reflecting male‐biased dispersal. The river‐restricted dwarf sanjika showed strong genetic structure in both microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA, suggesting strictly limited dispersal at both adult and juvenile stages.
  • We conclude that contrasting migration life histories have resulted in dramatically different patterns of population genetic structure among these congeneric species. The observed patterns demonstrate how divergent life‐history evolution may strongly influence broader patterns of population genetic connectivity in freshwater fish, with consequences for management and conservation. Specifically the results suggesting gene flow among Lake Malawi populations of mpasa, an IUCN red‐listed ‘Endangered’ species endemic to the lake catchment, imply that conservation initiatives operating at both local and catchment scales are needed to reverse local population decline.

 The spawning season, spawning grounds, and migration of the myctophid fish Diaphus theta were studied in the western North Pacific, based on seasonal sampling and estimation of hatching dates. The peak abundance of larvae was observed in July in the transition waters between the Oyashio and Kuroshio fronts. The spawning season ranged from late March to early September, with a peak from May to July. Larvae and juveniles <40 mm in standard length were distributed in the transition waters, whereas larger individuals were collected in the Oyashio and the Western Subarctic waters. These results indicate that this species undergoes a horizontal spawning migration from the Oyashio and Western Subarctic waters into the transition waters crossing the Oyashio front.  Age and growth of a paralepidid, Lestrolepis japonica, were determined from sagittal otoliths of specimens collected from April 2001 to February 2002 in Kagoshima Bay, southern Japan. Marginal growth increments indicated that the annulus was formed once a year, in August and September. Four groups were recognized, having none, one, two, or three annuli, respectively. Age in months was assigned to each individual on the basis of August as the birth month. The maximum recorded age was 48 months. Growth was expressed by von Bertalanffy's equation, L t  = 171.91{1 − exp[−0.148(t + 0.403)]}, t being the age in months and L t the standard length (mm) at age t.  The age and migratory history of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, collected along the Sanriku Coast of Japan, were examined using otolith microstructure and analysis of strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations. The mean Sr : Ca ratios from the elver mark to the otolith edge indicated that there were eels with several general categories of migratory history, including sea eels that never entered freshwater and others which had entered freshwater for brief periods but returned to the estuary or bay. This first evidence of the occurrence of sea eels in this northern area indicates that Japanese eels of the Sanriku Coast do not necessarily migrate into freshwater rivers. This paper interprets and discusses the usefulness of otolith microstructure for ageing Japanese sea bass ( Lateolabrax japonicus ) larvae and juveniles. Samples were collected from the Tango Sea along the Japan Sea coast, January–March 2007. Known-age (0-day and 10-day-old) larvae were obtained from the Ibaragi Prefectural Hatchery, Japan. Sagittal and lapillar otolith were processed and read using an otolith reading system. Clearly discernible hatch- and first-feeding marks were evident on sagitta, and development of accessory premordia (AP) appeared to be associated with larva-juvenile transition; however, no other marks indicating metamorphosis or settlement were evident. In lapillus, no discernible check mark was found. Known-age larvae showed that deposition of the first daily increment (DI) corresponded to first-feeding, which occurred at day-4 post-hatch. However, mean increment counts were significantly lower in lapillus than in sagitta, caused by poorly expressed increments around the centrum as well as relatively unclear centrum of the lapillus. The authors suggest that the use of lapillus can cause significant underestimation of age. Therefore, the sagitta is recommended for age and growth estimations of larvae and juveniles, although the presence of numerous subdaily increments warrants careful preparation and interpretation of the microstructure. A test for asymmetry showed the right and left otoliths to be quite symmetrical and their DI counts not significantly different, suggesting that either otolith can be used for studying age and growth of Japanese sea bass larvae and juveniles.  相似文献

Synopsis Otolith microstructure of about 120 Gymnocypris potanini larvae from the Minjiang River in China was examined and analyzed. Larvae had multiple primordia in most lapilli and sagittae, while had only one primordium in a few specimens. There had only one nucleus in otoliths of the larvae, except for some few specimens with 2 nuclei. The transparence of many otoliths differed from center to edge, and part of them could be divided into inner low optically dense zone (LODZ) and outer optically dense zone (ODZ). Based on increment clarity, otoliths of this species could be classified into three types, which were otolith with subtile increments, otolith with almost identified increments, and otolith with fairly clear increments characterized by high contrast. The last two types of otolith accounted for 87.07% in lapilli and 94.46% in sagittae, respectively. Increment clarity of sagitta was higher than that of lapillus. Natural checks were identified in 32.50% lapilli and 48.33% sagittae. These checks primarily located in the first to sixth increment. According to the number of increments in otoliths, the age of this batch larvae was 14 – 22 days, birth date was on June 17 – 25, and average growth rate of body length was 0.8936 ± 0.08769 mm/d.  相似文献
