ZnS:Mn nanoparticles were prepared by a chemical precipitation method and characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEGSEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Capping agent (mercaptoethanol) concentrations used were 0 M, 0.005 M, 0.01 M, 0.015 M, 0.025 M, 0.040 M, and 0.060 M, and resulted in nanoparticles sizes of 2.98 nm, 2.9 nm, 2.8 nm, 2.7 nm, 2.61 nm, 2.2 nm and 2.1 nm, respectively. The thermoluminescence (TL) glow curve was recorded by heating the sample exposed to UV‐radiation, at a fixed heating rate 1°C sec–1. The TL intensity initially increased with temperature, attained a peak value Im for a particular temperature, and then decreased with further increase in temperature. The peak TL intensity increased with decreasing nanoparticle size, whereas the temperature corresponding to the peak TL intensity decreased slightly with reducing nanocrystal size. As a consequence of increase in surface‐to‐volume ratio and increased carrier recombination rates, the TL intensity increased with decreasing nanoparticle size. It was found that, whereas activation energy slightly decreased with decreasing nanoparticle size, the frequency factor decreased significantly with reduction in nanoparticle size. Copper‐doped zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu) nanoparticles with varying concentrations of capping agent were prepared using a chemical route technique. These particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). Optical absorption studies showed that the absorption edge shifted towards the blue region as the concentration of the capping agent increased. Using effective mass approximation, calculation of the nanoparticle size indicated that effective band gap energy increases with decreasing particle size. The thermoluminescence (TL) properties of sodium hexameta phosphate (SHMP)‐passivated ZnS:Cu nanoparticles were investigated after UV irradiation at room temperature. The TL glow curve of capped ZnS:Cu showed variations in TL peak position and intensity with the change in capping agent concentration. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of ZnS:Cu nanoparticles excited at 254 nm exhibited a broad green emission band peaking around 510 nm, which confirmed the characteristic feature of Zn2+ as well as Cu2+ ions as the luminescent centres in the lattice. The PL spectra of ZnS:Cu nanoparticles with increasing capping agent concentrations revealed that the emission becomes more intense and shifted towards shorter wavelengths as the sizes of the samples were reduced. The thermoluminescence (TL) of nanoparticles has become a matter of keen interest in recent times but is rarely reported. This article reports the synthesis of ZnS:Mn nanocrystals using a chemical route, with mercaptoethanol (ME) as the capping agent. The particle sizes for the nanocrystals were measured by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and also by studying transmission electron microscopy (TEM) patterns. The particle sizes of the synthesized samples were found to be between 1 and 3 nm. For samples with different concentrations of the capping agent, it was found that the TL intensity of the ZnS:Mn nanoparticles increased as the particle size decreased. A shift in the peak position of the TL glow curve was also seen with decreasing particle size. The TL intensity was found to be maximal for samples with 1.2% of Mn. A change in the peak position was not found for samples with different concentrations of Mn. The half‐width glow peak curve method was used to determine the trap‐depth. The frequency factor of the synthesized samples was also calculated. The stability of the charge carriers in the traps increases with decreasing nanoparticle size. The higher stability may be attributed to the higher surface/volume ratio and also to the increase in the trap‐depth with decreasing particle size. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

ZnxCd1‐xS/alginate core/shell nanoparticles were synthesized via a colloidal route by reacting zinc and cadmium ions with sulfide ions, followed by coating with alginate. The crystal structure, morphology, size and optical properties of the core/shell nanoparticles were characterized by X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, UV/vis and photoluminescent spectra, respectively. The ZnxCd1‐xS nanoparticles are spherical and have a cubic structure with a mean crystalline size of 2–4 nm. The band gap of ZnxCd1‐xS/alginate core/shell nanoparticles increases with increasing Zn/Cd molar ratio, and the UV/vis absorption blue‐shifts correspondingly. Two emissions related to zinc and sulfide ion vacancies were observed for the ZnxCd1‐xS/alginate core/shell nanoparticles due to the surface changes from the alginate coating. A cadmium‐related emission was observed for both the uncovered ZnxCd1‐xS and ZnxCd1‐xS/alginate core/shell nanoparticles, which has a significant blue‐shift with increasing Zn/Cd molar ratio. The aim of this work is to characterize the microstructure of chitosan and alginate edible films by microscopy techniques and texture image analysis. Edible films were obtained by solution casting and solvent evaporation. The microscopy techniques used in this work were: light, environmental scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. Textural features and fractal dimension were extracted from the images. Entropy and fractal dimension were more useful to evaluate the complexity and roughness of films. The highest values of entropy and fractal dimension corresponded to alginate/chitosan, followed of alginate and chitosan films. An entropy/fractal dimension ratio, proposed here, was useful to characterize the degree of image complexity and roughness of edible films at different magnifications. It was possible to postulate that microscopy techniques combined with texture image analysis are efficient tools to quantitatively evaluate the surface morphology of edible films made of chitosan and alginate.  相似文献

Essential oils are known to possess antimicrobial and antioxidant activity while chitosan is a biocompatible polymer with antibacterial activity against a broad spectrum of bacteria. In this work, nanoparticles with both antioxidant and antibacterial properties were prepared by grafting eugenol and carvacrol (two components of essential oils) on chitosan nanoparticles. Aldehyde groups were first introduced in eugenol and carvacrol, and the grafting of these oils to chitosan nanoparticles was carried out via the Schiff base reaction. The surface concentration of the grafted essential oil components was determined by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The antioxidant activities of the carvacrol‐grafted chitosan nanoparticles (CHCA NPs) and the eugenol‐grafted chitosan nanoparticles (CHEU NPs) were assayed with diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Antibacterial assays were carried out with a representative gram‐negative bacterium, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and a gram‐positive bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The grafted eugenol and carvacrol conferred antioxidant activity to the chitosan nanoparticles, and the essential oil component‐grafted chitosan nanoparticles achieved an antibacterial activity equivalent to or better than that of the unmodified chitosan nanoparticles. Cytotoxicity assays using 3T3 mouse fibroblast showed that the cytotoxicity of CHEU NPs and CHCA NPs were significant lower than those of the pure essential oils. Biotechnol. Mercaptoethanol (ME), mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and L‐cysteine (L‐Cys) having ‐SH functional groups were used as surface passivating agents for the wet chemical synthesis of ZnS nanoparticles. The effect of the thiol group on the optical and photoluminescence (PL) properties of ZnS nanoparticles was studied. L‐Cysteine‐capped ZnS nanoparticles showed the highest PL intensity among the studied capping agents, with a PL emission peak at 455 nm. The PL intensity was found to be dependent on the concentration of Zn2+ and S2– precursors. The effect of buffer on the PL intensity of L‐Cys‐capped ZnS nanoparticles was also studied. UV/Vis spectra showed blue shifting of the absorption edge. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we described a strategy for synthesis of thiol‐coated CdTe/CdS/ZnS (core–shell–shell) quantum dots (QDs) via aqueous synthesis approach. The synthesis conditions were systematically optimized, which included the size of CdTe core, the refluxing time and the number of monolayers and the ligands, and then the chemical and optical properties of the as‐prepared products were investigated. We found that the mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)‐coated CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs presented highly photoluminescent quantum yields (PL QYs), good photostability and chemical stability, good salt tolerance and pH tolerance and favorable biocompatibility. The characterization of high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) showed that the CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs had good monodispersity and crystal structure. The fluorescence life time spectra demonstrated that CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs had a longer lifetime in contrast to fluorescent dyes and CdTe QDs. Furthermore, the MPA‐stabilized CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs were applied for the imaging of cells. Compared with current synthesis methods, our synthesis approach was reproducible and simple, and the reaction conditions were mild. More importantly, our method was cost‐effective, and was very suitable for large‐scale synthesis of CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs for future applications. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Background

Gene therapy has been used to treat a variety of health problems, but transfection inefficiency and the lack of safe vectors have limited clinical progress. Fabrication of a vector that is safe and has high transfection efficiency is crucial for the development of successful gene therapy. The present study aimed to synthesize chitosan‐alginate nanoparticles that can be used as carriers of the pAcGFP1‐C1 plasmid and to use these nanoparticles with an ultrasound protocol to achieve high efficiency gene transfection.

Methods

Chitosan was complexed with alginate and the pAcGFP1‐C1 plasmid at different charge ratios to create chitosan‐alginate‐DNA nanoparticles (CADNs). The average particle size and loading efficiency were measured. Plasmid DNA retardation and integrity were analysed on 1% agarose gels. The effect of CADNs and ultrasound on the efficiency of transfection of cells and subcutaneous tumors was evaluated.

Results

In the CADNs, the average size of incorporated plasmid DNA was 600–650 nm and the loading efficiency was greater than 90%. On the basis of the results of the plasmid DNA protection test, CADNs could protect the transgene from DNase I degradation. The transgene product expression could be enhanced efficiently if cells or tumor tissues were first given CADNs and then treated with ultrasound.

Conclusions

The use of CADNs combined with an ultrasound regimen is a promising method for safe and effective gene therapy. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Luminescent nanoparticles of Y2O3 doped with europium (Eu) and/or titanium (Ti) were synthesized using modified sol–gel routes. The crystalline cubic phase was confirmed using X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD). Particle morphology and size were evaluated using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. High‐resolution transmission electron microscopy showed that the synthesis method affected the average particle size and the Fourier transform of the images showed the lattice plane distances, indicating that the samples presented high crystallinity degree in accordance with the XRD pattern. The Ti valence was investigated using X‐ray absorption near edge spectroscopy and the tetravalent form was the dominant oxidizing state in the samples, mainly in Eu and Ti co‐doped Y2O3. Optical behaviour was investigated through X‐ray excited optical luminescence and photoluminescence under ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation. Results indicated that Eu3+ is the emitting centre in samples doped with only Eu and with both Eu and Ti with the 5D07F2 transition as the most intense, indicating Eu3+ in a noncentrosymmetric site. Finally, in the Eu,Ti‐doped Y2O3 system, Ti3+ (or TiIV) excitation was observed but no Ti emission was present, indicating a very efficient energy transfer process from Ti to Eu3+. These results can aid the development of efficient nanomaterials, activated using UV, VUV, or X‐rays.  相似文献

Preparation and properties of alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan blend fibers   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan blend fibers, prepared by spinning their mixture solution through a viscose-type spinneret into a coagulating bath containing aqueous CaCl2, were studied for structure and properties with the aid of infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron micrography (SEM). The analyses indicated a good miscibility between alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan, because of the strong interaction from the intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The best values of the dry tensile strength and breaking elongation were obtained when carboxymethyl chitosan content was 30 and 10 wt%, respectively. The wet tensile strength and breaking elongation decreased with the increase of carboxymethyl chitosan content. Introduction of CM-chitosan in the blend fiber improved water-retention properties of blend fiber compared to pure alginate fiber. Antibacterial fibers, obtained by treating the fibres with aqueous solution of N-(2-hydroxy)-propyl-3-trimethylammonium chitosan chloride and silver nitrate, respectively, exhibited good antibacterial activity to Staphylococcus aureus.  相似文献

Mn2+‐doped ZnS nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by a chemical precipitation method, using non‐ionic surfactants such as PMMA and PEG. The particles were prepared in an air atmosphere at 80°C. X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV‐visible and photoluminescence (PL) studies were used to investigate the effect of the capping agent on the size, morphology and optical properties of the ZnS–Mn2+ nanoparticles. Enhanced PL was observed from the surfactant‐capped ZnS–Mn2+ nanoparticles. The PL spectra showed a broad blue emission band in the range 460–445 nm and a Mn2+‐related yellow‐orange emission band in the range 581–583 nm. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The design and construction of delivery vectors with high stability and effective cellular uptake efficiency is very important. In this study, a novel polymeric liposomes (PLs) formed from PEGylated octadecyl‐quaternized lysine modified chitosan (OQLCS) and cholesterol with higher size stability and cellular uptake efficiency has been synthesized successfully. Compared to conventional liposomes (CLs; phosphatidyl choline/cholesterol), the calcein‐loaded PLs exhibited a multi‐lamellar structure with homogenous size diameter (200 nm) and high calcein encapsulation efficiency (about 92%). PLs could be stored at different temperature (25, 4, and ?20°C) and different medium (deionized water, phosphate‐buffered saline, and human plasma solution) for up to 4 weeks without significant size change. The spectrophotometer fluorometry analysis and the flow cytometry analysis indicated that in comparison with CL, PLs with positive zeta potential facilitates the uptake of calcein by MCF‐7 tumor cells. The data suggests that PLs may provide a new method to overcome the stability and enhance the uptake efficiency of CLs. Biotechnol. Bioeng. 2010;106: 952–962. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Luminescence technology has been improved with the help of semiconductor nanoparticles that possess novel optical and electrical properties compared with their bulk counterpart. The aim of this study was to design semiconductor nanocrystals in their pure (ZnS) or doped form (ZnS:Mn) with different concentrations of Mn2+ ions by a wet chemical route stabilized by ethylenediamine tetra‐acetic acid (EDTA) and to evaluate their luminescence properties. The nanocrystals were characterized by physicochemical techniques such as X‐ray diffraction (XRD), High‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SEAD), EDS, and ultraviolet (UV)–visible light and photoluminescence (PL) studies. These results showed the presence of cubic phase and spherically shaped nanocrystals. A blue shift with respect to their bulk counterpart was observed. PL emission spectra were observed with a fixed blue peak and the yellow‐orange bands were red shifted towards the red region under the same excitation wavelength. The orange‐red bands were attributed to the radiation transition of electrons in 3d5 unfilled shells of Mn2+ ions [4T1(4G)‐6A1(6S)]; the ZnS matrix varied with Mn2+ concentration. Shift and increase in the intensity of the PL and absorption bands were observed with increase in Mn content. The study showed that Mn2+‐doped ZnS nanocrystal emission bands can be tuned from the yellow‐orange to the red regions under a controlled synthesis process and could be used as promising luminescent emitters in the biology field upon functionalization with suitable materials. Further studies on construction with various other materials will be useful for practical applications.  相似文献

Curcumin is a polyphenol with multiple biological activities, but its extremely poor water solubility severely limits its application in the food industry. The purposes of this work were to study the effect of nano-encapsulation on the water solubility of curcumin (C), the interaction of curcumin with zein (Z), the thermal properties, rheological properties, and the stability under different environmental pressures of the nanoparticles. The results of particle size, zeta potential, and surface hydrophobicity (H0) indicated that the combination of coating materials including sodium caseinate (SC) and sodium alginate (SA) with zein nanoparticles by electrostatic interaction led to a gradual increase in the particle size of composite nanoparticles and a decrease in surface hydrophobicity. The nano-encapsulation significantly improved the water solubility of curcumin and causing its crystal structure to change to an amorphous state. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that curcumin bound to zein through hydrogen bonding. Rheological test results showed that the coating materials combined with zein led to an increase in the apparent viscosity of the nanoparticles. The stability analysis results indicated that the composite nanoparticles with a sodium alginate coating have excellent stability of pH, salt solution and storage, and excellent anti-gastrointestinal fluids digestion characteristics when compared to pure protein nanoparticles.  相似文献

Nanostructured polymer–semiconductor hybrid materials such as ZnS–poly(vinyl alcohol) (ZnS–PVA), ZnS–starch and ZnS–hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (Zns–HPMC) are synthesized by a facile aqueous route. The obtained nanocomposites are characterized using various techniques such as X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV/vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL). XRD studies confirm the zinc blende phase of the nanocomposites and indicate the high purity of the samples. SEM studies indicate small nanoparticles clinging to the surface of a bigger particle. The Energy Dispersive Analysis by X‐rays (EDAX) spectrum reveals that the elemental composition of the nanocomposites consists primarily of Zn:S. FTIR studies indicate that the polymer matrix is closely associated with ZnS nanoparticles. The large number of hydroxyl groups in the polymer matrix facilitates the complexation of metal ions. The absorption spectra of the specimens show a blue shift in the absorption edge. The spectrum reveals an absorption edge at 320, 310 and 325 nm, respectively. PL of nanocomposites shows broad peaks in the violet–blue region (420–450 nm). The emission intensity changes with the nature of capping agent. The PL intensity of ZnS–HPMC nanocomposites is found to be highest among the studied nanocomposites. The results clearly indicate that hydroxyl‐functionalized HPMC is much more effective at nucleating and stabilizing colloidal ZnS nanoparticles in aqueous suspensions compared with PVA and starch.
