The numbers of rotifers in large rivers never achieve the abundances observed in eutrophic lakes. The adverse conditions of the current have conduct biologists to establish links between particular geomorphologies and biological processes in the plankton of rivers. Recent attempts to examine specific adaptations of rotifers have shown that among several planktonic forms, the loricate species appeared to be better adapted to the current than soft-bodied or littoral-epibenthic species. The eutrophic Middle Loire provides rotifers with more edible biomass than that necessary for their production so, the aim of this study was to determine which other factors were responsible for the origins, growth and survival of rotifer populations in the river. Samples were taken bi-monthly in the current, from end-June to early-October during 8 years, in two sections of the River Loire situated at 550 and 640 km from the source. Flow rate, temperature, dissolved oxygen, suspended matter, biological oxygen demand and algal densities were examined in parallel, and among the 61 rotifer species collected at each site, the 30 dominant species were retained for the analysis. Planktonic loricate species were dominant in the Middle Loire, followed by epibenthic species, soft-bodied species being least abundant. The densities of rotifers and algae changed in parallel and in relation to temperature; flow was clearly unfavourable to algae, represented by the Chlorophytes and to rotifers, whatever the sites. Co-inertia analysis revealed that the assemblage of species was closely grouped at Dam where the immediate environment was dominated by numerous scattered islands. This analysis also illustrated that the consequence of eutrophication in the water quality was more marked downstream. Lessons drawn from this experience of the Middle Loire, which ranks among the richest rivers in terms of species, allowed to highlight that dominance of the Brachionidae is a rule in numerous rivers and may be explained by the capacity of several species to continue growing in a current of 0.2 m s−1. Trichocercids may be relevant indicators of sandy rivers. The flexibility of rotifers in the face of hydraulic conditions, the question of the rotifers’ origin, the respective roles of downstream transfer and processes, as well as the role of the rotifers in the river food-web are discussed.  相似文献

The influences of imports of nutrients and planktonic algae from the River Spree on the dynamics of phytoplankton were examined in the shallow, eutrophic Müggelsee, which has a retention time of only 42 days. Phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentrations were measured in both the lake and its inflow from 1980–1990. On a long-term average, mean biomass as well as vitality of most dominant phytoplankton populations in the lake were not significantly different from those in the river. Nevertheless, during distinct periods the external rates of biomass change of single lake populations (due to dilution or enrichment) were as high as the lake internal ones. The import of inocula populations from the river probably induced the formation of the typical community structure in the lake. Growth and decay of phytoplankton populations in the river strongly influenced the load of dissolved nutrients and thus indirectly the dynamics of planktonic algae in the downstream lake. For example, intensive assimilation of phosphorus by riverine algae in spring intensified the P-shortage and supported possible P-limitation of algal growth in the lake at that time. In years with high vernal biomass of centric diatoms in the river, and thus diminished import of dissolved silicon, the growth of diatoms was suppressed and that of cyanobacteria was favoured in the lake during summer.  相似文献

Linking herbivore-induced defences to population dynamics   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. Theoretical studies have shown that inducible defences have the potential to affect population stability and persistence in bi‐ and tritrophic food chains. Experimental studies on such effects of prey defence strategies on the dynamics of predator–prey systems are still rare. We performed replicated population dynamics experiments using the herbivorous rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus and four strains of closely related algae that show different defence responses to this herbivore. 2. We observed herbivore populations to fluctuate at a higher frequency when feeding on small undefended algae. During these fluctuations minimum rotifer densities remained sufficiently high to ensure population persistence in all the replicates. The initial growth of rotifer populations in this treatment coincided with a sharp drop in algal density. Such a suppression of algae by herbivores was not observed in the other treatments, where algae were larger due to induced or permanent defences. In these treatments we observed rotifer population densities to first rise and then decline. The herbivore went extinct in all replicates with large permanently defended algae. The frequency of herbivore extinctions was intermediate when algae had inducible defences. 3. A variety of alternative mechanisms could explain differential herbivore persistence in the different defence treatments. Our analysis showed the density and fraction of highly edible algal particles to better explain herbivore persistence and extinctions than total algal density, the fraction of highly inedible food particles or the accumulation of herbivore waste products or autotoxins. 4. We argue that the rotifers require a minimum fraction and density of edible food particles for maintenance and reproduction. We conjecture that induced defences in algae may thus favour larger zooplankton species such as Daphnia spp. that are less sensitive to shifts in their food size spectrum, relative to smaller zooplankton species, such as rotifers and in this way contributes to the structuring of planktonic communities.  相似文献

An enclosure experiment was conducted to assess the effects of a zooplankton elimination on the structure of a phytoplankton community. Phytoplankton biomass and production were higher in grazer-free enclosures, while the productivity per unit biovolume was lower. Exclusion of zooplankton favoured the majority of algal species, especially chrysophyceans (Dinobryon spp.) and the diatom Rhizosolenia, while mucilagineous green-algae were disfavoured. Middle sized algae (ESD 15–50 µm) and those with the largest Surface Area/Volume ratio were proportionally most favoured by the elimination of grazers. These differences in phytoplankton community structure are discussed in relation to effects of direct selective grazing and nutrient recycling by zooplankton. Some differences, as the immediate positive response of Dinobryon and Rhizosolenia, are probably caused by grazing release, while others, e.g. the response of mucilagineous species, might be caused by changed competitive relationships between the algae.  相似文献

Impacts of fish predation on an Ohio River zooplankton community   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Compared to lentic systems, much less is known about the factorsthat structure zooplankton communities in large river environments. In this study, we used an in situ mesocosm system, the potamocorrals,to assess the impact of larval fish on the zooplankton communityin the Ohio River (USA). The responses of zooplankton to increasingbiomasses of fish were taxon-dependent. The population growthrates of the most common zooplankton, Diacyclops thomasi, variedinversely with fish biomass, while other crustacean zooplanktonshowed no significant responses to the fish treatment. The reversepattern was seen for the rotifer Polyarthra sp. whose populationgrowth rates increased with increasing fish biomass. This isthe first in situ evaluation of fish predation on zooplanktonin a large river system and demonstrates that predation as wellas physical factors may influence riverine zooplankton densitiesand community structure.  相似文献

The fate and interactions with river organisms of zooplankton as they drift downriver from a reservoir on a fourth-order mountain stream (Hiji River, Japan) were investigated. Monthly samples were collected at the reservoir and six river sites, simultaneously, from May 2005 to May 2006. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish were colleted, and their stomach contents were analyzed in April and May, 2006, respectively. Drift from the reservoir was the primary source for the river plankton community; the abundance of zooplankton, particularly those of cladocerans and large rotifer, rapidly decreased within several kilometers of the dam. Analysis of the contents of fish stomachs showed that drifting zooplankton was the main food for fish, with strong food selectivity for cladocerans and large rotifers. However, fish and insect planktivores showed longitudinally different stomach contents, with progressively fewer zooplankton found in the stomachs at the downriver sites. The results suggest that the outflow of zooplankton from the reservoir is an important food source for the downstream predators, especially fish, but the drift of zooplankton and consequent food availability for the predators at lower sites are strongly limited by concentrated fish predation just below the reservoir dam.  相似文献

Ciliated protozoa accounted for up to 50% of the mean daily zooplankton biomass in McCloud Lake, a small (5 ha), oligotrophic, acidic (pH 4.7) lake in north-central Florida. Food resources (algae and bacterioplankton) were limiting for crustacean and rotifer zooplankton during much of the year. Myxotrophic ciliates were a dominant component of the planktonic food web. Stentor niger , an uncommon species in the plankton of lakes, dominated the ciliate assemblage and usually comprised >90% of total ciliate biomass. Stentor niger always contained high densities of photosynthetic zoochlorellae and contributed an estimated 30% to the total autotrophic biomass.  相似文献

The longitudinal distribution and seasonal dynamics of zooplankton were examined along a 200-km section of the middle to lower Nakdong River, Korea. Zooplankton was sampled twice a month from January 1995 to December 1997 at five sites in the main river channel. There was considerable longitudinal variation in total zooplankton abundance (ANOVA, p < 0.001). All major zooplankton groups (rotifers, cladocerans, copepodids and nauplii) increased significantly with distance downstream along the river. There also were statistically significant seasonal differences in zooplankton abundance at the sampling sites (ANOVA, p < 0.01). Zooplankton abundance was high in spring and fall and low in summer and winter. The seasonal pattern of rotifers was similar to that of total zooplankton. This reflected the fact that rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus, B. rubens, Keratella cochlearis and Polyarthra spp.) strongly dominated the zooplankton community at all locations. Among the macrozooplankton, small-bodied cladocerans (e.g. Bosmina spp.) dominated; the abundance of large-bodied cladocerans (e.g. Daphnia) was negligible (0–5 ind. l–1). Among the environmental variables considered, partial residence time seemed to play the most important role in determining characteristics of the river zooplankton community.  相似文献

Dispersal, establishment, and spread of aquatic invasive species such as the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) can be influenced by riverine velocities and volumetric flows in invaded lake-stream ecosystems. Zebra mussels, which have a planktonic larval form (veliger), disperse rapidly downstream from a source population. Concentrations, dispersal, and body conditions of zebra mussel veligers were studied under different volumetric flow, or discharge, conditions in a coupled lake-stream ecosystem in northern Texas, USA. Veliger densities in lotic environments were strongly related to population dynamics in upstream lentic source populations. A strong exponential decrease in veliger density was observed through a 28-km downstream study reach. Increased water releases from the source reservoir increased veliger flux and dispersal potential, concomitantly increasing veliger flux and decreasing transit time. However, passage through release gates in the dam and increased turbulence in the river during high-discharge events could negatively affect body condition of veligers, and veliger body condition generally decreased from the source population to the farthest downstream site and was lower for veligers during periods of high discharge. Thus increased discharge appears to reduce the proportion of viable veligers because of increased turbulence-induced mortality. Colonization of distant downstream reservoirs can occur if discharge and propagule pressure are sufficient or if interim habitats are suitable for establishment of in-stream populations.  相似文献

The seasonal dynamics of ciliate abundance has been studied in Lake Krivoye (the White Sea coast). A high species diversity of ciliates and their maximal biomass in the plankton are observed in the early spring in spite of low water temperatures (5–7°C). In spring, infusoria comprise 90% of the zooplankton biomass; i.e., infusoria as primary consumers are the main consumers of algal and microzooplankton production and the major carriers of energy to the next trophic level. During this period, a significant portion of planktonic infusoria biomass is constituted by the species containing zoochlorella. The high biomass of symbiotic algae (25% of the total biomass of planktonic algae) in a spring cilioplankton testifies to the important role that algosymbionts play in the primary production in some parts of the year.  相似文献

A study was carried out within a 700-km river sector, including three types of ecosystems (a reservoir, a river and its estuary) to characterise the major features of zooplankton communities in the Seine Basin. In rivers, zooplankton biomass becomes significant only when the growth rate of the organisms is higher than the dilution rate (4-5th orders rivers, according to River Continuum Concept). Upstream, short residence times favour the development of small species (Rotifers) with low individual body weight and biomass. Conversely, larger species (microcrustaceans) develop more downstream, where increased residence time leads to autochthonous production (Riverine Productivity Model). Such a pattern is greatly modified by human impact. Zooplankton input from the Marne reservoir represents one type of disruption in the general upstream-downstream trend (according to the Serial Discontinuity Concept). This reservoir is a source of microcrustaceans; they rapidly disappear mainly through fish predation, and therefore have little impact on the river phytoplankton. Discontinuities, such as confluences, have a relatively small effect on the stock of zooplankton with regard to the water release from the reservoir, but they persist more downstream, because they have the same lotic origin. A few microhabitats with macrophytes play a small role for this canalised river, but they can modify locally the plankton community structure and composition. As a whole, the flux of zooplankton rises exponentially, whereas discharge increases linearly from upstream (4th order) to downstream (8th order). In the canalised sectors, Dreissena larvae build up an important biomass, adding to that of the zooplankton sensu stricto. Especially abundant in the downstream sector of the Marne and Seine Rivers, the larvae show a widespread colonisation of the benthic substrates by the adult Dreissena. One of the largest mussel colonies in the middle estuary can contribute to a rapid decrease of zooplankton. Estuary ecosystems form a transitional zone between freshwater and seawater, with zooplankton dynamics closely linked to the particular conditions on this part of the river system.  相似文献

To examine the seasonal succession of the entire zooplankton community in Lake Biwa, zooplankton biomass (on an areal basis) and its distribution patterns among crustaceans, rotifers and ciliates were studied in the north basin from April 1997 to June 1998. Seasonal changes in phytoplankton and population dynamics of Daphnia galeata were also examined to assess food condition and predation pressure by fish. From March to November, crustaceans dominated zooplankton biomass, but rotifers and ciliates were dominant from December to February. Among crustaceans, Eodiaptomus japonicus was the most abundant species, followed by D. galeata. Zooplankton biomass increased from January to a peak in early April, just before the spring bloom of phytoplankton, then decreased in mid-April when mortality rate of D. galeata increased. From mid-June, zooplankton increased and maintained a high level until the beginning of November. During this period, both birth and mortality rates of D. galeata were relatively high and a number of rotifer and crustacean species were observed. However, their abundances were very limited except for E. japonicus which likely preys on ciliates and rotifers. In Lake Biwa, food sources other than phytoplankton, such as resuspended organic matter from the sediments, seems to play a crucial role in zooplankton succession from winter to early spring, while zooplankton community seems to be regulated mainly by fish predation from summer to fall.  相似文献

Ecosystem resistance to the impacts of diverse human insults depends on the replacement of sensitive species by ones more tolerant of the stressor. Here we present evidence from a whole-lake acidification experiment (Lake 302S, Experimental Lakes Area, Canada) that resistance and species compensation decline with increasing trophic level. Diverse and fast-growing algal and rotifer assemblages with high dispersal potentials showed significant compensatory species dynamics, resulting in the maintenance of total biomass despite 30%–80% declines in species richness. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that significant compensatory algal and rotifer dynamics were best explained by differential species tolerances of acidified chemical conditions coupled with release from resource limitation and predation. However, less diverse cladoceran, copepod, and fish assemblages showed significant declines in total biomass and weak species compensation with loss of species during acidification. In comparison, algal and zooplankton species dynamics remained relatively synchronized in a nearby unperturbed reference lake (Lake 239) during the experiment. As a result, Lake 302S showed limited ecosystem resistance to anthropogenic acidification. Therefore, we hypothesize that lost species will increase the susceptibility of acidified lakes to the adverse impacts of other environmental stressors (for example, climate warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, invasive species). Consequently, the ecosystem stability of boreal lakes is expected to decline as global change proceeds. Received 2 January 2001; accepted 12 July 2002.  相似文献

Distribution and abundance of zooplankton in the Waikato River,New Zealand   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6

Potamoplankton is often a well developed component in large lowland rivers, yet little is known about its structure in New Zealand's longest river, the Waikato River. To redress this gap we sampled bimonthly at seven sites along the length of the river over 12 months. Rotifers were the dominant zooplankton in the Waikato River making up 85% of the total densities. Cladocerans represented 9% and copepods only 6%. Rotifers were also the most taxonomically rich group with 41 species in 20 genera identified throughout the study. Thirty rotifer species and nine genera represent new records for the river – two cladoceran species were also recorded for the first time. The highest densities of crustaceans and rotifers were found in the hydro lakes. Densities of crustaceans decreased with increasing distance downstream and densities of rotifers were on average 15 times greater than crustaceans in the lower river. The seasonality of Crustacea was similar to that in New Zealand lakes and rivers with high densities in summer and minimum densities over the winter period. Total rotifer densities showed a similar trend although there were marked seasonal differences between individual species.  相似文献

Preliminary observations were made between October 1982 and May 1983 on the nature, taxonomic composition, spatial distribution, buoyancy behaviour and nutrient requirements of some unusual planktonic algal “jellies” in Oguta Lake in Southeastern Nigeria. These “jellies” are macroscopic, blue-green algal masses whose excessive mucilage of high consistency acts as substrata for other epiphytic components viz. diatoms and green algae. They are more abundant in the lentic areas of the lake, undergo diurnal vertical movements and have their growth enhanced by spikes of nitrogen and phosphorus salts into their aquatic medium. The effects of these “jellies” on the ecology and general water use of the lake are discussed. Speculations on the reasons for their occurrence are given and possible control measures outlined.  相似文献

Information on the effects of water level changes on microbial planktonic communities in lakes is limited but vital for understanding ecosystem dynamics in Mediterranean lakes subjected to major intra- and inter-annual variations in water level. We performed an in situ mesocosm experiment in an eutrophic Turkish lake at two different depths crossed with presence/absence of fish in order to explore the effects of water level variations and the role of top-down regulation at contrasting depths. Strong effects of fish were found on zooplankton, weakening through the food chain to ciliates, HNF and bacterioplankton, whereas the effect of water level variations was overall modest. Presence of fish resulted in lower biomass of zooplankton and higher biomasses of phytoplankton, ciliates and total plankton. The cascading effects of fish were strongest in the shallow mesocosms as evidenced by a lower zooplankton contribution to total plankton biomass and lower zooplankton:ciliate and HNF:bacteria biomass ratios. Our results suggest that a lowering of the water level in warm shallow lakes will enhance the contribution of bacteria, HNF and ciliates to the plankton biomass, likely due to increased density of submerged macrophytes (less phytoplankton); this effect will, however, be less pronounced in the presence of fish.  相似文献

The seasonal succession of the potamoplankton of the Middel Loire was studied fortnightly from June to October 1995, a period of low water flow. The increase in dissolved oxygen, suspended matter, BOD5 and chlorophyll a, associated with the decrease in nutrients downstream, are typical of eutrophic rivers. Algae were the principal components of the suspended matter flux in the river. Their density increased from the upper site of Dampierre-en-Burly to the lower site of Saint-Laurent des Eaux, with respective maxima of 68 ×106 cells l-1 and 106 × 106cells l-1. A large rotifer community developed in association with the algal growth, with densities up to 3700 ind l-1 at Dampierre-en-Burly and up to 5800 ind l-1 at Saint-Laurent des Eaux. They had a high Shannon-Weaver diversity, while grazing appeared to control the algae. As the year progressed to the warmer season, the biomass of the β and β α mesosaprobic rotifer species increased parallel with algae. The water theoretically transported potamoplankton at 0.2 ms-1 during mid-summer, which meant that the biomass of the algae doubled in minimum 17 km and that of the rotifers in 34 km. From these values and the distances between sampling stations, we deduce that inoculation points were located in areas which could be as short as a hundred meters. Not only algae, but also rotifers are capable of restoring an inoculum of organisms from place to place. Summer hydrodynamics, close to localised lentic areas, were responsible for an increase in plankton abundance in the stream. These movements had an ecotone effect at the boundary between standing and running water, creating pulses. The lower regions were progressively enriched by successive inoculates, dilution and seeding inputs, which did not prevent the growth of algae and of parthenogenetic species in the river. Such processes, which occur in years of low flow, are responsible for the large variations in plankton density observed between years. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

1. We investigated the potential competition and feeding impact of the common rotifer species, Keratella cochlearis and K. quadrata , on the abundant prostomatid ciliates, Urotricha furcata and Balanion planctonicum, in laboratory batch culture experiments. All four species have similar feeding preferences, co-occur in many freshwater environments, and are thus potential competitors for the same algal food.
2. Two small Cryptomonas species served as food for the ciliates and the rotifers in the experiments. Growth rates of each ciliate species were measured when they grew alone and when they were paired with one of the rotifer species.
3. Both rotifer species reduced the growth rate of U. furcata , probably primarily by direct feeding on the ciliates. Growth rate of B. planctonicum was unaffected by K. cochlearis , but was drastically reduced by grazing and/or mechanical interference of K. quadrata .
4. These results suggest niche partitioning of the sympatric ciliates with respect to their rotifer competitors/predators.  相似文献

Phytoplankton structure was studied in Aliakmon river basin in April (highflow) and September (lowflow) 1995 in 29 sampling sites. Abundance and biomass were generally low and ranged considerably between sites. Benthic diatoms contributed greatly to the suspended algal assemblages whereas trends of potamoplankton development were observed downstream. Limnoplankton and especially chlorophytes developed in the areas where lentic conditions prevailed. The nature of changes in phytoplankton seemed to be both longitudinal and temporal. Multivariate techniques revealed that areas with distinctive morphology, hydrology and anthropogenic inputs tended to have similar phytoplankton composition although no simple relation with physico-chemical factors can be shown. Human impact was more obvious on phytoplankton at the lowflow period. Generally, discharge played a significant role to the structure of phytoplankton communities.  相似文献
