It has long been thought that the eyes index the inner workings of the mind. Consistent with this intuition, empirical research has demonstrated that pupils dilate as a consequence of attentional effort. Recently, Smallwood et al. (2011) demonstrated that pupil dilations not only provide an index of overall attentional effort, but are time-locked to stimulus changes during attention (but not during mind-wandering). This finding suggests that pupil dilations afford a dynamic readout of conscious information processing. However, because stimulus onsets in their study involved shifts in luminance as well as information, they could not determine whether this coupling of stimulus and pupillary dynamics reflected attention to low-level (luminance) or high-level (information) changes. Here, we replicated the methodology and findings of Smallwood et al. (2011) while controlling for luminance changes. When presented with isoluminant digit sequences, participants'' pupillary dilations were synchronized with stimulus onsets when attending, but not when mind-wandering. This replicates Smallwood et al. (2011) and clarifies their finding by demonstrating that stimulus-pupil coupling reflects online cognitive processing beyond sensory gain.  相似文献

During free-viewing of natural scenes, eye movements are guided by bottom-up factors inherent to the stimulus, as well as top-down factors inherent to the observer. The question of how these two different sources of information interact and contribute to fixation behavior has recently received a lot of attention. Here, a battery of 15 visual stimulus features was used to quantify the contribution of stimulus properties during free-viewing of 4 different categories of images (Natural, Urban, Fractal and Pink Noise). Behaviorally relevant information was estimated in the form of topographical interestingness maps by asking an independent set of subjects to click at image regions that they subjectively found most interesting. Using a Bayesian scheme, we computed saliency functions that described the probability of a given feature to be fixated. In the case of stimulus features, the precise shape of the saliency functions was strongly dependent upon image category and overall the saliency associated with these features was generally weak. When testing multiple features jointly, a linear additive integration model of individual saliencies performed satisfactorily. We found that the saliency associated with interesting locations was much higher than any low-level image feature and any pair-wise combination thereof. Furthermore, the low-level image features were found to be maximally salient at those locations that had already high interestingness ratings. Temporal analysis showed that regions with high interestingness ratings were fixated as early as the third fixation following stimulus onset. Paralleling these findings, fixation durations were found to be dependent mainly on interestingness ratings and to a lesser extent on the low-level image features. Our results suggest that both low- and high-level sources of information play a significant role during exploration of complex scenes with behaviorally relevant information being more effective compared to stimulus features.  相似文献

Fixation patterns are thought to reflect cognitive processing and, thus, index the most informative stimulus features for task performance. During face recognition, initial fixations to the center of the nose have been taken to indicate this location is optimal for information extraction. However, the use of fixations as a marker for information use rests on the assumption that fixation patterns are predominantly determined by stimulus and task, despite the fact that fixations are also influenced by visuo-motor factors. Here, we tested the effect of starting position on fixation patterns during a face recognition task with upright and inverted faces. While we observed differences in fixations between upright and inverted faces, likely reflecting differences in cognitive processing, there was also a strong effect of start position. Over the first five saccades, fixation patterns across start positions were only coarsely similar, with most fixations around the eyes. Importantly, however, the precise fixation pattern was highly dependent on start position with a strong tendency toward facial features furthest from the start position. For example, the often-reported tendency toward the left over right eye was reversed for the left starting position. Further, delayed initial saccades for central versus peripheral start positions suggest greater information processing prior to the initial saccade, highlighting the experimental bias introduced by the commonly used center start position. Finally, the precise effect of face inversion on fixation patterns was also dependent on start position. These results demonstrate the importance of a non-stimulus, non-task factor in determining fixation patterns. The patterns observed likely reflect a complex combination of visuo-motor effects and simple sampling strategies as well as cognitive factors. These different factors are very difficult to tease apart and therefore great caution must be applied when interpreting absolute fixation locations as indicative of information use, particularly at a fine spatial scale.  相似文献

In the compensatory optomotor response of the fly the interesting phenomenon of gain control has been observed by Reichardt and colleagues (Reichardt et al., 1983): The amplitude of the response tends to saturate with increasing stimulus size, but different saturation plateaus are assumed with different velocities at which the stimulus is moving. This characteristic can already be found in the motion-sensitive large field neurons of the fly optic lobes that play a role in mediating this behavioral response (Hausen, 1982; Reichardt et al, 1983; Egelhaaf, 1985; Haag et al., 1992). To account for gain control a model was proposed involving shunting inhibition of these cells by another cell, the so-called pool cell (Reichardt et al., 1983), both cells sharing common input from an array of local motion detectors. This article describes an alternative model which only requires dendritic integration of the output signals of two types of local motion detectors with opposite polarity. The explanation of gain control relies on recent findings that these input elements are not perfectly directionally selective and that their direction selectivity is a function of pattern velocity. As a consequence, the resulting postsynaptic potential in the dendrite of the integrating cell saturates with increasing pattern size at a level between the excitatory and inhibitory reversal potentials. The exact value of saturation is then set by the activation ratio of excitatory and inhibitory input elements which in turn is a function of other stimulus parameters such as pattern velocity. Thus, the apparently complex phenomenon of gain control can be simply explained by the biophysics of dendritic integration in conjunction with the properties of the motion-sensitive input elements.  相似文献

The Stroop task is a paradigmatic psychological task for investigating stimulus conflict and the effect this has on response selection. The model of Cohen et al. (Cohen et al. 1990 Psychol. Rev. 97, 332-361) has hitherto provided the best account of performance in the Stroop task, but there remains certain key data that it fails to match. We show that this failure is due to the mechanism used to perform final response selection-one based on the diffusion model of choice behaviour (Ratcliff 1978 Psychol. Rev. 85, 59-108). We adapt the model to use a selection mechanism which is based on the putative human locus of final response selection, the basal ganglia/thalamo-cortical complex (Redgrave et al. 1999 Neuroscience 89, 1009-1023). This improves the match to the core human data and, additionally, makes it possible for the model to accommodate, in a principled way, additional mechanisms of cognitive control that enable better fits to the data. This work prompts a critique of the diffusion model as a mechanism of response selection, and the features that any response mechanism must possess to provide adaptive action selection. We conclude that the consideration of biologically constrained solutions to the action selection problem is vital to the understanding and improvement of cognitive models of response selection.  相似文献

Neo-darwinists have long argued that parallel evolution, the repeated evolution of similar phenotypes in closely related lineages, is caused by the action of similar environments on alleles at many loci of small effect. A more controversial possibility is that the genetic architecture of traits initiates parallelism, sometimes through fixation of alleles of large effect. Recent research (by Cole et al., Colosimo et al., Cresko et al., and Shapiro et al.) offers the surprising insight that reduction in two armor traits of threespine stickleback is governed by independently segregating major loci as well as additional quantitative trait loci (QTL), and that alleles at the same major loci are associated with parallel phenotypes in globally distributed populations. This research suggests the emergence of a new and exciting vertebrate model system for evolutionary genetics.  相似文献

Comparison of vancomycin-inducible proteins from four strains of Enterococci   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
Vancomycin-inducible proteins of 39.5 and 39 kDa from respectively, low-level and high-level resistant Enterococci were compared. Electrophoretic, immunoblot and peptide analysis revealed three types of protein, one in a low-level resistant strain of E. faecium, one in 2 high-level-resistant strains of E. faecium, and one in a high-level resistant strain of E. faecalis. The inducible proteins of E. faecium and E. faecalis, of 39.5 and 39 kDa respectively, which may function in a similar fashion (Al-Obeid et al. (1990) Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 34, 252-256), are not related immunologically.  相似文献

We extend recent information-theoretic phase transition approaches to evolutionary and cognitive process via the Rate Distortion and Joint Asymptotic Equipartition Theorems, in the circumstance of interaction with a highly structured environment. This suggests that learning plateaus in cognitive systems and punctuated equilibria in evolutionary process are formally analogous, even though evolution is not cognitive. Extending arguments by Adami et al. (2000), we argue that 'adaptation' is the process by which a distorted genetic image of a coherently structured environment is imposed upon a species.  相似文献

Neurons in area 17 of the cat visual cortex adapt when stimulated by drifting patterns of optimal orientation, spatial frequency and temporal frequency (Ohzawa et al. 1982; Albrecht et al. 1984; Ohzawa et al. 1985). A component of this adaptation has been attributed to a contrast gain-control mechanism, rather than to neural fatigue, and results in enhanced differential sensitivity around the adapting contrast level (Ohzawa et al. 1982; Albrecht et al. 1984; Ohzawa et al. 1985). Experiments described here suggest that neural response rate, the directional selectivity of the cell, and the temporal frequency of the stimulus, are the principal determinants of adaptation, irrespective of other stimulus parameters such as contrast, velocity, or spatial frequency. The present results can nevertheless accommodate the results of previous studies of adaptation, and additionally provide scope for the resolution of apparent contradictions between results from psychophysical and neurophysiological studies of adaptation.  相似文献

The similarity between the dynamics of the human balance control system in the frontal and sagittal planes during the fixation of visual stimulus and smooth pursuit of its sinusoidal movements in the horizontal plane with a frequency of 0.1 or 0.01 Hz (so-named fast and slow pursuit) has been investigated by the nonlinear method of analysis. The experiments were carried out according to the notion that it is possible to describe the process of orthograde standing by a two-segment model--upper and lower segments which are connected by a hip joint (other joints were fixed). It was shown that during fixation the similarity between the dynamics of orthostatic control system in the frontal plane is higher than in the sagittal plane. A slow pursuit does not influence the similarity, but a fast one decreases the similarity in the frontal plane. The indices of similarity between the dynamics of the system in the sagittal plane for all the conditions are close and do not differ significantly. The changes in similarity during fast pursuit are supposed to be connected with the different inertia of eyes and body movements. The differences between dynamic similarity in the frontal and sagittal planes are probably connected with the peculiarities of both balance control during joint fixation and AP-ML control (Winter et al., 1993) under conditions investigated.  相似文献

Humans are rarely faced with one simple task, but are typically confronted with complex stimulus constellations and varying stimulus-relevance in a given situation. Through modifying the prototypical stop-signal task and by combined recording and analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we studied the effects of stimulus relevance for the generation of a response or its inhibition. Stimulus response mappings were modified by contextual cues, indicating which of two different stimuli following a go stimulus was relevant for stopping. Overall, response inhibition, that is comparing successful stopping to a stop-signal against go-signal related processes, was associated with increased activity in right inferior and left midfrontal regions, as well as increased EEG delta and theta power; however, stimulus-response conditions in which the most infrequent stop-signal was relevant for inhibition, were associated with decreased activity in regions typically involved in response inhibition, as well as decreased activity in the delta and theta bands as compared to conditions wherein the relevant stop-signal frequency was higher. Behaviorally, this (aforementioned) condition, which demanded inhibition only from the most infrequent stimulus, was also associated with reduced reaction times and lower error rates. This pattern of results does not align with typical stimulus frequency-driven findings and suggests interplay between task relevance and stimulus frequency of the stop-signal. Moreover, with a multimodal EEG-fMRI analysis, we demonstrated significant parameterization for response inhibition with delta, theta and beta time-frequency values, which may be interpreted as reflecting conflict monitoring, evaluative and/or motor processes as suggested by previous work (Huster et al., 2013; Aron, 2011). Further multimodal results suggest a possible neurophysiological and behavioral benefit under conditions whereby the most infrequent stimulus demanded inhibition, indicating that the frequency of the stop-signal interacts with the current stimulus-response contingency. These results demonstrate that response inhibition is prone to influence from other cognitive functions, making it difficult to dissociate real inhibitory capabilities from the influence of moderating mechanisms.  相似文献

Summary Lysosomal aryl sulphatase activity in rat liver is demonstrated by a modification of the existing processes of fixation, incubation and processing. The choice and concentration of the fixative, duration of fixation and thickness of liver slices are found to be important factors in maintaining the levels of enzyme activity. Reliable and reproducible results are obtained by fixing thin liver slices (1 mm) for 18–24 h, in 2% glutaraldehyde buffered to pH 7.4 by 0.1M cacodylate buffer and incubating sections inHopsu et al. (1967) medium using (160 mg) nitrocatechol sulphate as substrate. Aryl sulphatase activity is localised in discrete pericanalicular granules recognised as lysosomes, which stain less intensely than acid phosphatase by the lead method.Supported by a grant from the Nuffield Foundation.  相似文献

In the adult brain, cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) can be beneficial by contributing to memory formation or can be detrimental by causing neurodegeneration, and it is of great interest to understand this dichotomy. Currently, it remains largely unknown which mechanisms are regulated by Cdk5. Recent studies by Hawasli et al. and Qu et al., however, are significant advances towards mechanistic insights. Hawasli et al. demonstrate that Cdk5 regulates protease-directed degradation of an important synaptic receptor, which impacts memory formation. Qu et al. show that Cdk5 inhibits the activity of an enzyme that metabolizes reactive oxygen species, which then leads to neurodegeneration. These two studies hold promise for establishing treatments to prevent cognitive dysfunction and neurodegeneration.  相似文献

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is one of the most common single gene disorders affecting the human nervous system with a high incidence of cognitive deficits, particularly visuospatial. Nevertheless, neurophysiological alterations in low-level visual processing that could be relevant to explain the cognitive phenotype are poorly understood. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study early cortical visual pathways in children and adults with NF1. We employed two distinct stimulus types differing in contrast and spatial and temporal frequencies to evoke relatively different activation of the magnocellular (M) and parvocellular (P) pathways. Hemodynamic responses were investigated in retinotopically-defined regions V1, V2 and V3 and then over the acquired cortical volume. Relative to matched control subjects, patients with NF1 showed deficient activation of the low-level visual cortex to both stimulus types. Importantly, this finding was observed for children and adults with NF1, indicating that low-level visual processing deficits do not ameliorate with age. Moreover, only during M-biased stimulation patients with NF1 failed to deactivate or even activated anterior and posterior midline regions of the default mode network. The observation that the magnocellular visual pathway is impaired in NF1 in early visual processing and is specifically associated with a deficient deactivation of the default mode network may provide a neural explanation for high-order cognitive deficits present in NF1, particularly visuospatial and attentional. A link between magnocellular and default mode network processing may generalize to neuropsychiatric disorders where such deficits have been separately identified.  相似文献

Recent research has demonstrated that the topography of defensive reactions depends on factors that are extraneous to the stimulus that elicits the defensive response. For example, hermit crabs will withdraw more slowly to the approach of a simulated visual predator (i.e., the eliciting stimulus) when in the presence of a coincident acoustic stimulus. Multiple properties related to the magnitude (e.g., duration, amplitude) of the acoustic stimulus have been found to modulate the crabs' withdrawal response (Chan et al., 2010b). We demonstrate that the proximity in spatial location between a threatening visual stimulus and a potentially distracting extraneous auditory stimulus is an important determinant of anti-predator behavior in hermit crabs. We suggest that a distal relationship between the eliciting stimulus and an unrelated signal may produce greater distraction. This marks the first reported experimental evidence of this relationship in an invertebrate species.  相似文献

SAME-DIFFERENT DISCRIMINATION TESTS WITH INTERSTIMULUS DELAYS UP TO ONE DAY   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There are many ways in which a laboratory difference test differs from 'real life'discrimination of foods. One of these is the interval of time between tasting the two stimuli to be discriminated. To investigate this, Cubero et al. (1995) investigated interstimulus delays of up to 1 min. for the same-different test, using a citrus flavored beverage as a medium. The present study extended this research by increasing the interstimulus delays up to 1 day. For judges unfamiliar with the stimuli, performance deteriorated as the time interval increased. For judges more familiar with the stimuli, performance deteriorated but not as much. The results were compatible with Cubero et al.'s hypothesis that different types of memory trace for the first (standard) stimulus were utilized for comparison with the second (comparison) stimulus.  相似文献

Conclusion The interactions between(Brady)Rhizobium and legume plants involves many interesting problems. In the last ten years, there were remarkable experiments which have detected excreted flavonoid compounds at pmol levels from plant roots, which induce(Brady)Rhizobium nod gene expression (Long 1989, Nap and Bisseling 1990, Dénariéet al. 1992, Schlamanet al. 1992). The responses of rhizobial genes to the various kinds of chemical compound are different (Maxwellet al. 1989, Zaatet al. 1989, Davis and Johnston 1990, Hartwiget al. 1990, Hungriaet al. 1992). The resolution of pSym genes controlling those mechanisms makes way for the long-term goal of introducing nitrogen fixation ability into nonlegume plants. Recently, some experiments have shown thatRhizobium and other nitrogen fixing bacteria form nodule-like strutures on rice, barley or wheat (Al-Mallah 1989, Jinget al. 1990, Rolfe and Bender 1991). Some O2 protection mechanism instead of leghemoglobin must be needed for nitrogen fixation byRhizobium or other N2-fixing bacteria which have invaded in the nonlegume root tissue. The isolation of the plant mutants or preparation of transgenic plants capable of hyper-nodule formation having efficient nitrogen fixation ability may be major goals. For the attainment of these goals, transformation of a foreign genome (nif-ornod gene cassette) into the plant cell might be a good way to proceed (Barkeret al. 1990). It is also necessary to clarify the relationships between the level of relative endogenous plant hormones and the exchange of the differentiation of the root tissue to the nodule tissue. This phenomenon of redifferentiation of plant tissue by the results from(Brady)Rhizobium and legume communications will be an important approach likely to lead to solve the molecular basis of plant having “TOTIPOTENCY”.  相似文献

Immunogold labeling of cryosections according to Tokuyasu (Tokuyasu KT. A technique for ultracyotomy of cell suspensions and tissues. J Cell Biol 1973;57:551–565), is an important and widely used method for immunoelectron microscopy. These sections are cut from material that is chemically fixed at room temperature (room temparature fixation, RTF). Lately in many morphological studies fast freezing followed by cryosubstitution fixation (CSF) is used instead of RTF. We have explored some new methods for applying immunogold labeling on cryosections from high‐pressure frozen cells (HepG2 cells, primary chondrocytes) and tissues (cartilage and exocrine pancreas). As immunolabeling has to be carried out on thawed and stable sections, we explored two ways to achieve this: (1) The section fixation method, as briefly reported before (Liou W et al. Histochem Cell Biol 1996;106:41–58 and Möbius W et al. J Histochem Cytochem 2002;50:43–55.) in which cryosections from freshly frozen cells were stabilized in mixtures of sucrose and methyl cellulose and varying concentrations of glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde and uranyl acetate (UA). Only occasionally does this method reveal section areas with excellent cell preservation and negatively stained membranes like Tokuyasu sections of RTF material. (Liou et al.) (2) The rehydration method, a novel approach, in which CSF with glutaraldehyde and/or osmium tetroxide (OsO4) was followed by rehydration and cryosectioning as in the Tokuyasu method. Especially, the addition of UA and low concentrations of water to the CSF medium favored superb membrane contrast. Immunogold labeling was as efficient as with the Tokuyasu method.  相似文献

Thresholds were measured for the detection of vibratory stimuli of variable frequency and duration applied to the index fingertip and thenar eminence through contactors of different sizes. The effects of stimulus frequency could be accounted for by the frequency characteristics of the Pacinian (P), non-Pacinian (NP) I, and NP III channels previously determined for the thenar eminence (Bolanowski et al., J Acoust Soc Am 84: 1680-1694, 1988; Gescheider et al., Somatosens Mot Res 18: 191-201, 2001). The effect of changing stimulus duration was also essentially identical for both sites, demonstrating the same amount of temporal summation in the P channel. Although the effect of changing stimulus frequency and changing stimulus duration did not differ for the two sites, the effect of varying the size of the stimulus was significantly greater for the thenar eminence than for the fingertip. The attenuated amount of spatial summation on the fingertip was interpreted as an indication that the mechanism of spatial summation consists of the operations of both neural integration and probability summation.  相似文献
