Intact male and female spontaneously hypertensive rats showed a progressive increase in blood pressure with growth; male attained systolic blood pressure levels of 244 +/- 6 mmHg, and females 205 +/- 3 mmHg at age 22 weeks. Orchidectomy at age 4 weeks significantly attenuated the systolic blood pressure elevation in the male (195 +/- 4 mmHg at age 22 weeks), but ovariectomy at age 4 weeks had no effect on the development of hypertension in the female. The pattern of development of hypertension in orchidectomized males was the same as that in intact and ovariectomized females. Administration of testosterone propionate to gonadectomized rats of both sexes conferred a male pattern of blood pressure development. These results indicate that the sexually dimorphic pattern of hypertension in the spontaneously hypertensive rat is androgen dependent, rather than estrogen dependent. Plasma norepinephrine levels did not differ between the sexes, nor were they altered by gonadectomy or testosterone replacement, suggesting that the higher blood pressures in the intact male and androgen treated male and female SHR are not dependent on increased sympathetic outflow in the established phase of hypertension. Stores of norepinephrine in the posterior hypothalamic region were significantly greater in intact male rats and testosterone treated rats of both sexes than in intact or ovariectomized females, and were higher in the pons of intact female rats than in all other groups. These alterations in central catecholamine stores were not correlated with blood pressure. Further study is needed to assess the functional significance of these androgen mediated alterations in posterior hypothalamic neurons as a determinant of the androgen mediated sexual dimorphism of blood pressure in the spontaneously hypertensive rat.  相似文献

Women are thought to form fear memory more robust than men do and testosterone is suspected to play a role in determining such a sex difference. Mouse cued fear freezing was used to study the sex-related susceptibility and the role of testosterone in fear memory in humans. A 75-dB tone was found to provoke weak freezing, while 0.15-mA and 0.20-mA footshock caused strong freezing responses. No sex differences were noticed in the tone- or footshock-induced (naïve fear) freezing. Following the conditionings, female mice exhibited greater tone (cued fear)-induced freezing than did male mice. Nonetheless, female mice demonstrated indistinctive cued fear freezing across the estrous phases and ovariectomy did not affect such freezing in female mice. Orchidectomy enhanced the cued fear freezing in male mice. Systemic testosterone administrations and an intra-lateral nucleus of amygdala (LA) testosterone infusion diminished the cued fear freezing in orchidectomized male mice, while pretreatment with flutamide (Flu) eradicated these effects. Long-term potentiation (LTP) magnitude in LA has been known to correlate with the strength of the cued fear conditioning. We found that LA LTP magnitude was indeed greater in female than male mice. Orchidectomy enhanced LTP magnitude in males' LA, while ovariectomy decreased LTP magnitude in females' LA. Testosterone decreased LTP magnitude in orchidectomized males' LA and estradiol enhanced LTP magnitude in ovariectomized females' LA. Finally, male mice had lower LA GluR1 expression than female mice and orchidectomy enhanced the GluR1 expression in male mice. These findings, taken together, suggest that testosterone plays a critical role in rendering the sex differences in the cued fear freezing and LA LTP. Testosterone is negatively associated with LA LTP and the cued fear memory in male mice. However, ovarian hormones and LA LTP are loosely associated with the cued fear memory in female mice.  相似文献

Synthetic atriopeptin II (APII) was infused directly into the right renal artery of intact conscious SHR at rates of 0.25-1 microgram/kg/min, while simultaneously measuring blood pressure (MAP) and selected regional blood flows. The latter were measured using chronically implanted miniaturized Doppler flowprobes that were placed on the right and left renal artery, superior mesenteric artery and abdominal aorta. The effects of intrarenally (i.r.) infused APII on these vascular beds were compared to the effects of the same amounts of APII given intravenously (i.v.) in the same SHR. I.r. and i.v. infusions caused similar reductions of MAP and all four blood flows. Also effects on calculated resistances were comparable, implying that resistance increased most in the mesentery and least in the two kidneys. The increase in right renal resistance during i.v. infusions of APII was not different from the effect during i.r. infusions. Also, during i.r. infusions into the right kidney, effects on the left and right kidney were not different. Our observations suggest that synthetic APII has no direct effects on the renal vasculature of intact conscious SHR.  相似文献

Sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone are essential for sexually dimorphic behaviors in vertebrates. However, the hormone-activated molecular mechanisms that control the development and function of the underlying neural circuits remain poorly defined. We have identified numerous sexually dimorphic gene expression patterns in the adult mouse hypothalamus and amygdala. We find that adult sex hormones regulate these expression patterns in a sex-specific, regionally restricted manner, suggesting that these genes regulate sex typical behaviors. Indeed, we find that mice with targeted disruptions of each of four of these genes (Brs3, Cckar, Irs4, Sytl4) exhibit extremely specific deficits in sex specific behaviors, with single genes controlling the pattern or extent of male sexual behavior, male aggression, maternal behavior, or female sexual behavior. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that various components of sexually dimorphic behaviors are governed by separable genetic programs.  相似文献

Epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) are vasodilator, natriuretic, and antiinflammatory lipid mediators. Both cis- and trans-EETs are stored in phospholipids and in red blood cells (RBCs) in the circulation; the maximal velocity (V(max)) of trans-EET hydrolysis by soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) is threefold that of cis-EETs. Because RBCs of the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) exhibit increased sEH activity, a deficiency of trans-EETs in the SHR was hypothesized to increase blood pressure (BP). This prediction was fulfilled, since sEH inhibition with cis-4-[4-(3-adamantan-1-ylureido)cyclohexyloxy]benzoic acid (AUCB; 2 mg·kg(-1)·day(-1) for 7 days) in the SHR reduced mean BP from 176 ± 8 to 153 ± 5 mmHg (P < 0.05), whereas BP in the control Wistar-Kyoto rat (WKY) was unaffected. Plasma levels of EETs in the SHR were lower than in the age-matched control WKY (16.4 ± 1.6 vs. 26.1 ± 1.8 ng/ml; P < 0.05). The decrease in BP in the SHR treated with AUCB was associated with an increase in plasma EETs, which was mostly accounted for by increasing trans-EET from 4.1 ± 0.2 to 7.9 ± 1.5 ng/ml (P < 0.05). Consistent with the effect of increased plasma trans-EETs and reduced BP in the SHR, the 14,15-trans-EET was more potent (ED(50) 10(-10) M; maximum dilation 59 ± 15 μm) than the cis-isomer (ED(50) 10(-9) M; maximum dilation 30 ± 11 μm) in relaxing rat preconstricted arcuate arteries. The 11,12-EET cis- and trans-isomers were equipotent dilators as were the 8,9-EET isomers. In summary, inhibition of sEH resulted in a twofold increase in plasma trans-EETs and reduced mean BP in the SHR. The greater vasodilator potency of trans- vs. cis-EETs may contribute to the antihypertensive effects of sEH inhibitors.  相似文献

Recent literature indicates that females are more resistant to shock-, trauma-, and sepsis-induced immune dysfunction and organ injury than are males. Consequently, using trauma-hemorrhagic shock (T/HS) and burn models, we tested whether the neutrophil response to trauma occurred in a sexually dimorphic fashion and, if so, the role of sex hormones. Neutrophil activation, as reflected by CD11b expression and respiratory burst activity, was increased to a greater extent in male rats than in female rats after T/HS or burn injury. Testosterone appeared to potentiate neutrophil activation, because castration reduced neutrophil activation, whereas ovariectomy had little effect. Mechanistically, this sexually dimorphic neutrophil response appeared to be due to both cellular and humoral factors. Evidence for a cellular difference between male and female neutrophils is based on the observation that naive female neutrophils were more resistant to activation by burn or T/HS plasma and lymph than naive male neutrophils and that this resistance varied over the estrus cycle. Additionally, the humoral environment was more neutrophil activating in male rats, because burn and T/HS plasma and lymph from male rats activated naive male neutrophils to a greater extent than comparable samples from females. Last, on the basis of in vitro experiments examining the effects of estrogen on calcium signaling, it appears that estrogen limits trauma-induced neutrophil activation, at least in part, by limiting the entry of calcium into the cell via store-operated calcium entry mechanisms. In conclusion, there is a striking sexual dimorphism in neutrophil responses after trauma, and these changes reflect both cellular resistance to activation as well as a less activating humoral environment.  相似文献

An unexplained dichotomy exists between the LH (luteinizing hormone) responses to castration of male and female rats, as males show a more prompt increase in serum LH levels. We have tested the hypothesis that neonatal exposure to androgen determines the sexual dimorphism of that response. Control groups of male and female rats were castrated at 60 days of age. Other animals had been castrated at 0 or 25 days of age and then given steroid treatment via testosterone (T) implants from 25 through 60 days of age. At 60 days of age a blood sample was taken from each animal before removal of either the T implant or the gonads. Animals were bled again 24 and 48 h later. Within 24 h after orchidectomy the typical early plateau of plasma LH had occurred, represented by an increment in mean LH concentrations of 316 ng/ml. Orchidectomy at 25 days of age had little or no effect on subsequent response to removal of T. In contrast, neonatal orchidectomy resulted in a markedly diminished response to T removal on Day 60. The response, however, was not reduced to that of normal females. In female rats plasma LH does not increase by 48 h after ovariectomy. Perinatal testosterone propionate (TP) treatment of females partially masculinized (enhanced) the LH response to T implant removal, but only if ovariectomy had been performed prior to puberty (at 0 or 25 days of age).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The basis of functional gender differences in adult responsiveness to testosterone (T) is not yet understood. Conversion of T to estradiol by cytochrome P450 aromatase in the medial preoptic area is required for the full expression of male sexual behavior in rats. High levels of aromatase are found in the medial preoptic nucleus (MPN) and in an interconnected group of sexually dimorphic nuclei which mediate masculine sexual behavior. Within this neural circuit, aromatase is regulated by T, acting through an androgen receptor (AR)-mediated mechanism. This arrangement constitutes a feedforward system because T is both the regulator and the major substrate of aromatase. Preoptic aromatase is thus more active in adult males than in females because of normal sex differences in circulating androgen levels. However, the mechanism of enzyme induction also appears to be sexually dimorphic because equivalent physiological doses of T stimulate aromatase to a greater extent in males than in females. Dose-response studies indicate that the sex difference is apparent over a range of circulating T concentrations and constitute a gender difference in T efficacy, but not potency. Sex differences in aromatase correlate with sex differences in nuclear AR concentrations in most regions of the sexually dimorphic neural circuit, but not in MPN. These results suggest that males may have larger populations of target cells in which aromatase is regulated by androgen, but the lack of a gender difference in AR levels in the MPN suggests that differences in post-receptor mechanisms could also be involved. Measurements of aromatase mRNA in androgen-treated gonadectomized rats demonstrate that sex difference in regulation is exerted pretranslationally. Taken together these results demonstrate a sexually dimorphic mechanism that could potentially limit the action of T in females, and may relate to the enhanced expression of T-stimulated sexual behaviors in males.  相似文献

The sex-specific divergence of antioxidant pathways in fetal organs of opposite-sex twin is unknown and remains urgently in need of investigation. Such study faces many challenges, mainly the ethical impossibility of obtaining human fetal organs. Opposite-sex sheep twins represent a unique model for studying a sex dimorphism for antioxidant systems. The activity of total superoxide dismutase (SOD), SOD1, SOD2, glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR) and catalase (CAT), the content of total glutathione, reduced glutathione (GSH), and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) were measured in brain, lung, liver, kidney, and skeletal muscles of female and male fetuses collected from sheep twin pregnancies at day 65 of gestation. Lipid peroxidation was assessed by measuring melondialdehyde (MDA) tissue content. Male brain has greater total SOD and SOD1 activities than female brain. Female liver has greater SOD2 activity than male liver. Male liver has greater GR activity than female liver. Male liver has higher total GSH and GSSG content than female liver. Male skeletal muscles have higher total GSH, GSH, and GSSG content than female skeletal muscles. Female brain and liver have higher MDA content than male brain and liver. This is the first report of a sex dimorphism for fetal organ antioxidative pathways. Brain, liver, and skeletal muscles of male and female fetuses display distinct antioxidant pathways. Such sexually dimorphic responses to early life oxidative stress might be involved in the sex-related difference in fetal development that may have a long-term effect on offspring. Our study urges researchers to take into consideration the importance of sex as a biologic variable in their investigations.  相似文献

Female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) have lower blood pressures than males. The renin-angiotensin system plays an important role in the sexual dimorphism of blood pressure in SHR. The sympathetic nervous system can stimulate renin release, and, therefore, the present study was performed to determine whether the renal sympathetic nerves play a role in the sexual dimorphism of blood pressure in SHR. Male and female SHR underwent bilateral kidney denervation or sham surgery, and, 2 wk later, mean arterial pressure (MAP) and pulse interval were recorded, and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) was measured by the sequence technique. Left ventricle index (LVI) was also calculated. MAP was higher in sham-operated males than females (182 +/- 5 vs. 169 +/- 4 mmHg; P < 0.01), but, despite the higher MAP in males, LVI was significantly greater in female rats. BRS was not different between sham-operated male and female SHR. Following bilateral renal denervation, MAP was decreased by a similar percentage (8-10%) in males (169 +/- 2 mmHg) and females (152 +/- 3 mmHg), whereas LVI was reduced only in female SHR. BRS was not altered by renal denervation in either sex. These data indicate that renal nerves play a role in the control of blood pressure in SHR independent of sex, but do not play a role in mediating the sex differences in blood pressure.  相似文献

In young adult spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), mean arterial pressure (MAP) is higher in males than in females and inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) eliminates this sex difference. After cessation of estrous cycling in female SHR, MAP is similar to that in male SHR. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of the RAS in maintenance of hypertension in aging male and female SHR. At 16 mo of age, MAP was similar in male and female SHR (183+/-5 vs. 193+/-8 mmHg), and chronic losartan (40 mg.kg-1.day-1 po for 3 wk) reduced MAP by 52% (to 90+/-8 mmHg, P<0.05 vs. control) in males and 37% (to 123+/-11 mmHg, P<0.05 vs. control) in females (P<0.05, females vs. males). The effect of losartan on angiotensin type 1 (AT1) receptor blockade was similar: MAP responses to acute doses of ANG II (62.5-250 ng/kg) were blocked to a similar extent in losartan-treated males and females. F2-isoprostane excretion was reduced with losartan more in males than in females. There were no sex differences in plasma renin activity, plasma angiotensinogen or ANG II, or renal expression of AT1 receptors, angiotensin-converting enzyme, or renin. However, renal angiotensinogen mRNA and protein expression was higher in old males than females, whereas renal ANG II was higher in old females than males. The data show that, in aging SHR, when blood pressures are similar, there remains a sexual dimorphism in the response to AT1 receptor antagonism, and the differences may involve sex differences in mechanisms responsible for oxidative stress with aging.  相似文献

Female growth-restricted offspring are normotensive in adulthood. However, ovariectomy induces a marked increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) that is abolished by renin angiotensin system (RAS) blockade, suggesting RAS involvement in the etiology of hypertension induced by ovariectomy in adult female growth-restricted offspring. Blockade of the RAS also abolishes hypertension in adult male growth-restricted offspring. Moreover, sensitivity to acute ANG II is enhanced in male growth-restricted offspring. Thus, we hypothesized that an enhanced sensitivity to acute ANG II may contribute to hypertension induced by ovariectomy in female growth-restricted offspring. Female offspring were subjected to ovariectomy (OVX) or sham ovariectomy (intact) at 10 wk of age. Cardio-renal hemodynamic parameters were determined before and after an acute infusion of ANG II (100 ng·kg(-1)·min(-1) for 30 min) at 16 wk of age in female offspring pretreated with enalapril (40 mg·kg(-1)·day(-1) for 7 days). Acute ANG II induced a significant increase in MAP in intact growth-restricted offspring (155 ± 2 mmHg, P < 0.05) relative to intact control (145 ± 4 mmHg). Ovariectomy augmented the pressor response to ANG II in growth-restricted offspring (163 ± 2 mmHg, P < 0.05), with no effect in control (142 ± 2 mmHg). Acute pressor responses to phenylephrine did not differ in growth-restricted offspring relative to control, intact, or ovariectomized. Furthermore, renal hemodynamic responses to acute ANG II were significantly enhanced only in ovariectomized female growth-restricted offspring. Thus, these data suggest that enhanced responsiveness to acute ANG II is programmed by intrauterine growth restriction and that sensitivity to acute ANG II is modulated by ovarian hormones in female growth-restricted offspring.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to perform a comprehensive morphologic analysis of developing mouse external genitalia (ExG) and to determine specific sexual differentiation features that are responsive to androgens or estrogens. To eliminate sex steroid signaling postnatally, male and female mice were gonadectomized on the day of birth, and then injected intraperitoneally every other day with DES (200ng/g), DHT (1μg/g), or oil. On day-10 postnatal male and female ExG were dissected, fixed, embedded, serially sectioned and analyzed. We identified 10 sexually dimorphic anatomical features indicative of normal penile and clitoral differentiation in intact mice. Several (but not all) penile features were impaired or abolished as a result of neonatal castration. Those penile features remaining after neonatal castration were completely abolished with attendant clitoral development in androgen receptor (AR) mutant male mice (X(Tfm)/Y and X/Y AR-null) in which AR signaling is absent both pre- and postnatally. Administration of DHT to neonatally castrated males restored development of all 10 masculine features to almost normal levels. Neonatal ovariectomy of female mice had little effect on clitoral development, whereas treatment of ovariectomized female mice with DHT induced partial masculinization of the clitoris. Administration of DES to neonatally gonadectomized male and female mice elicited a spectrum of development abnormalities. These studies demonstrate that the presence or absence of androgen prenatally specifies penile versus clitoral identity. Differentiated penile features emerge postnatally and are sensitive to and dependent upon prenatal or pre- and postnatal androgen. Emergence of differentiated clitoral features occurs postnatally in either intact or ovariectomized females. It is likely that each penile and clitoral feature has a unique time-course of hormonal dependency/sensitivity.  相似文献

Bile acids are efficiently removed from sinusoidal blood by a number of transporters including the Na+-taurocholate-cotransporting polypeptide (Ntcp). Na+-dependent bile salt uptake, as well as Ntcp, are expressed twofold higher in male compared with female rat livers. Also, estrogen administration to male rats decreases Ntcp expression. The aims of this study were to determine the hormonal mechanism(s) responsible for this sexually dimorphic expression of Ntcp. We examined castrated and hypophysectomized rats of both sexes. Sex steroid hormones, growth hormone, thyroid, and glucocorticoids were administered, and livers were examined for changes in Ntcp messenger RNA (mRNA). Ntcp mRNA and protein content were selectively increased in males. Estradiol selectively decreased Ntcp expression in males, whereas ovariectomy increased Ntcp in females, confirming the importance of estrogens in regulating Ntcp. Hypophysectomy decreased Ntcp mRNA levels in males and prevented estrogen administration from decreasing Ntcp, indicating the importance of pituitary hormones. Although constant infusion of growth hormone to intact males reduced Ntcp, its replacement alone after hypophysectomy did not restore the sex differences. In contrast, thyroid hormone and corticosterone increased Ntcp mRNA in hypophysectomized rats. Sex differences in Ntcp mRNA levels were produced only when the female pattern of growth hormone was administered to animals also receiving thyroid and corticosterone. Thyroid and dexamethasone also increased Ntcp mRNA in isolated rat hepatocytes, whereas growth hormone decreased Ntcp. These findings demonstrate the essential role that pituitary hormones play in the sexually dimorphic control of Ntcp expression in adult rat liver and in the mediation of estrogen effects.  相似文献

We demonstrated that the decreased response to acetylcholine observed in aorta of male and female spontaneously hypertensive rats is corrected after sustained (15 days) reduction of blood pressure levels by losartan. In order to verify if the same occurs in resistance vessels, vascular diameter changes induced by topical application of acetylcholine and bradykinin (endothelium-dependent vasodilators) and sodium nitroprusside (endothelium-independent vasodilator) to mesenteric arterioles studied in vivo, in situ were determined in rats treated with losartan for 24 h (acute) or 15 days (chronic). Rats that presented similar reduction (in %) of the blood pressure levels after losartan treatment were chosen. Sodium nitroprusside induced similar responses in losartan-treated and untreated male or female SHR. Whereas in female SHR, losartan corrected the diminished arteriolar response to endothelium-dependent vasodilators after acute and chronic treatment, in male SHR this correction only occurred after chronic treatment. Thus, losartan corrected the endothelial dysfunction more easily in female than in male SHR and independently of the normalization or the magnitude of the reduction of the blood pressure levels. In an attempt to explain the difference, we evaluated the losartan effect on nitric-oxide synthase (NOS) activity and angiotensin II AT1 and AT2 receptor gene expression in these animals. In male and female SHR, NOS activity and AT1 receptor expression were not altered by acute or chronic treatment. On the other hand, AT2 receptor expression was augmented only in female SHR by these treatments. Therefore, augmented AT2 receptor expression, but not alteration of NOS activity or AT1 receptor expression, might explain the difference observed.  相似文献

Biological patterns across latitudinal gradients elucidate a number of striking natural clines from which numerous processes can be further explored. The trade‐off between reproduction and somatic maintenance and growth represents a suite of life‐history traits with variable energy allocation and potential latitudinal patterns. Specifically, male sexually dimorphic traits in female choice systems represent one such reproductive investment constrained by resource acquisition and subsequent allocation. Latitudinal variation in sexual dimorphism has been suggested although the relationship between dimorphic traits and latitude are conflicting. Here, we test alternative hypotheses regarding this pattern using two broadly distributed vertebrates exhibiting sexually dimorphic traits. We hypothesized that the exaggeration of dimorphic traits correlates with latitude, with males having exaggerated sexually dimorphic traits at either higher or lower latitudes. Results indicate that male sexually dimorphic traits are exaggerated at lower latitudes while relative gonopodium size in Poecilia latipinna was larger at higher latitudes. This pattern may be a result of lower latitude populations experiencing greater population densities and longer access to resources that could manifest in females more intensively selecting for higher quality males in lower latitudes. Experimental work should address this pattern and investigate mechanistic processes.  相似文献

Speciation by sexual selection is generally modeled as the coevolution of female preferences and elaborate male ornaments leading to behavioral (sexual) reproductive isolation. One prediction of these models is that female preference for conspecific males should evolve earlier than male preference for conspecific females in sexually dimorphic species with male ornaments. We tested that prediction in darters, a diverse group of freshwater fishes with sexually dimorphic ornamentation. Focusing on the earliest stages of divergence, we tested preference for conspecific mates in males and females of seven closely related species pairs. Contrary to expectation, male preference for conspecific females was significantly greater than female preference for conspecific males. Males in four of the 14 species significantly preferred conspecific females; whereas, females in no species significantly preferred conspecific males. Relationships between the strength of preference for conspecifics and genetic distance revealed no difference in slope between males and females, but a significant difference in intercept, also suggesting that male preference evolves earlier than females’. Our results are consistent with other recent studies in darters and suggest that the coevolution of female preferences and male ornaments may not best explain the earliest stages of behavioral isolation in this lineage.  相似文献

In sexually dimorphic species characterized by exaggerated male ornamentation, behavioral isolation is often attributed to female preferences for conspecific male signals. Yet, in a number of sexually dimorphic species, male mate choice also results in behavioral isolation. In many of these cases, the female traits that mediate species boundaries are unclear. Females in sexually dimorphic species typically lack many of the elaborate traits that are present in males and that are often used for taxonomic classification of species. In a diverse and largely sexually dimorphic group of fishes called darters (Percidae: Etheostoma), male mate choice contributes to behavioral isolation between a number of species; however, studies addressing which female traits males prefer are lacking. In this study, we identified the dominant female pattern for two sympatric species, Etheostoma zonale and Etheostoma barrenense, using pattern energy analysis, and we used discriminate function analysis to identify which aspects of female patterning can reliably classify species. We then tested the role of female features in male mate choice for E. zonale, by measuring male preference for computer animations displaying the identified (species-specific) conspecific features. We found that the region above the lateral line is important in mediating male mate preferences, with males spending a significantly greater proportion of time with animations exhibiting conspecific female patterning in this region than with animations exhibiting heterospecific female patterning. Our results suggest that the aspects of female phenotypes that are the target of male mate choice are different from the conspicuous male phenotypes that traditionally characterize species.  相似文献

We previously created the Alb-DsRed2 transgenic (Tg) rat that specifically expresses the red fluorescent protein, DsRed2, in the liver. Herein, we demonstrate that the DsRed2 expression is sexually dimorphic and exhibits a male-specific pattern. The profiling of sexual dimorphism in DsRed2 expression during pre-pubertal development was investigated using an in vivo fluorescent imaging analysis. The DsRed2 expression decreased gradually in both sexes until 28 days after birth. While DsRed2 expression was not persistent in the female liver, the male hepatic expression increased again at 35 days. Sexual dimorphic DsRed2 expression did not change in gonadectomized male and female Tg-rats. However, female hepatic DsRed2 was induced 72 h after the hypophysectomy. Hepatocytes isolated from the female Tg-rats also revealed DsRed2 induction by 96 h in culture. These results suggest that the pituitary hormone suppresses the female hepatic DsRed2 expression causing the sexual dimorphism of DsRed2 expression.  相似文献
