Newly hatched chicks will spontaneously peck at conspicuous objects in their field of view, and soon learn to distinguish between edible food particles and unpleasant tasting objects. To examine whether the selective pecking is based on the ability to memorize shapes, we analyzed pecking behavior of 1- to 2-days-old quail chicks (Coturnix japonica) by using ball- and triangle-shaped beads both painted in green. Repeated presentation of dry bead (either ball or triangle) resulted in a progressively fewer number of pecks (habituation). When chicks were tested by triangle after repeated presentation of ball, chicks showed a significant increase in the number of pecks at the triangle (dishabituation). On the other hand, when tested by ball after a series of triangle presentations, pecking frequency did not increase (no dishabituation). Chicks thus distinguished the triangle as a novel object after being habituated to ball, but did not respond to the ball after triangle. A similar asymmetry was found in one-trial passive avoidance task. Chicks were pre-trained by water-coated (neutral) triangle and then trained by methylanthranilate-coated (aversive) ball. In this case, most chicks learned to avoid the ball, and half of these successful learners pecked at the triangle; they distinguished triangle from ball. When chicks were pre-trained by neutral ball and trained by aversive triangle, on the other hand, most chicks did not distinguish the ball from triangle, and showed a generalized avoidance for both beads. Chicks may be innately predisposed to memorize a limited category of shapes such as ball, and associate them with selective avoidance.  相似文献

The visual displays of animals and plants often look dramatic and colourful to us, but what information do they convey to their intended, non-human, audience [1] [2]? One possibility is that stimulus values are judged accurately - so, for example, a female might choose a suitor if he displays a specific colour [3]. Alternatively, as for human advertising, displays may attract attention without giving information, perhaps by exploiting innate preferences for bright colours or symmetry [2] [4] [5]. To address this issue experimentally, we investigated chicks' memories of visual patterns. Food was placed in patterned paper containers which, like seed pods or insect prey, must be manipulated to extract food and their patterns learnt. To establish what was learnt, birds were tested on familiar stimuli and on alternative stimuli of differing colour or contrast. For colour, birds selected the trained stimulus; for contrast, they preferred high contrast patterns over the familiar. These differing responses to colour and contrast show how separate components of display patterns could serve different roles, with colour being judged accurately whereas pattern contrast attracts attention.  相似文献

To examine whether this discrimination is based on a chick's ability to memorize objects by shape cues, we analyzed the pecking behavior. One- to 3-day old quail chicks (Coturnix japonica) were presented with dry objects of different shapes (ball, disk, triangle and T-shape) of similar size (4 mm) and color (green). Habituation occurred after repeated presentation of any one of these objects (duration: 30 sec; interval: 4 min). When chicks showed significantly more pecks at a novel object (dishabituation), we assumed that chicks had memorized the habituated shapes and distinguished the novel object. Chicks did not show dishabituation between a ball and a disk. On the other hand, chicks discriminated a triangle or T-shape from the memorized image of disk, but did not memorize either triangle or T-shape by its shape. Similarly, chicks did not memorize the size of disks as a reference for subsequent pecking behavior. Chicks proved to have a limited ability to memorize shape and size cues for selective pecking behavior, in strong contrast to their accurate memorization of colors.  相似文献

Reducing feather pecking when raising laying hen chicks in aviary systems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Aviary systems for laying hens offer several advantages over battery cages. However, pecking the feathers of conspecifics remains a serious problem that negatively affects the welfare of the birds as well as the economy of a farm. From experimental studies with small groups, it has been shown that feather pecking and foraging behaviour are related and that both behaviour are influenced by early access to litter substrate. We, therefore, hypothesised, that feather pecking in aviaries can be reduced with an adequate management in the first 2 weeks of life.Each of seven pens on six commercial poultry farms, was divided into two identical compartments (matched pair design). In one of the compartments (experimental compartment) chicks were reared for the first 2 weeks of life with access to litter (wood shavings, in one case with additional straw), while the chicks in the other compartment (control) were kept on a plastic grid. Thereafter, all chicks had unrestricted access to litter and there were no differences between the two compartments neither in housing conditions nor in management procedures.Chicks in the experimental compartments spent significantly more time foraging (week 5), showed significantly less feather pecking (weeks 5 and 14) and significantly fewer birds had damaged tail feathers (weeks 5 and 14).The study demonstrates that in aviaries, under commercial conditions, early access to litter substrate has a significant effect on the development of feather pecking. In order to reduce feather pecking and to increase foraging behaviour, it is recommended that laying hen chicks raised in aviary systems do get access to litter from day 1 on.  相似文献

本试验是验证印记敏感期和早期经验对雏鸡啄羽行为的影响。试验包括8个处理组:一组鸡(OF组)在整个试验期(0—14周)饲养在沙质底层;一组(0P组)饲养在贫瘠底层;三组分别在贫瘠底层饲养为期2周(3P组)、4周(5P组)、6周(7P组),然后转入沙质底层直至14周;其它三组分别饲养在沙质底层为期2周(3F组)、4周(5F组)、6周(7F组),然后转入贫瘠底层直至14周。观察啄羽、啄地、啄物和盯物等四种行为。结果显示:啄羽行为印记的最重要时期为雏鸡出生后的头4周,尤其是3—4周;早期环境经验可以修饰雏鸡后续的啄羽行为,但不能根本改变它。另外,环境条件似乎对啄物和盯物行为无影响[动物学报54(6):955-963,2008]。  相似文献

Two estrogen receptors (ERs), denoted ERalpha and ERbeta, have been identified in humans and various animal species, including the Japanese quail. Estrogens play a key role in sexual differentiation and in activation of sexual behavior in Japanese quail. The distribution of ERalpha in the brain of male and female adult quail has previously been studied using immunohistochemistry, whereas in situ hybridization has been employed to study the distribution of ERbeta mRNA in males only. In this article, we used in situ hybridization to study the distribution of mRNAs for both ERalpha and ERbeta in brain areas controlling sexual behavior of Japanese quail. Our results show that both ERalpha mRNA and ERbeta mRNA are localized in areas important for sexual behavior, such as the preoptic area and associated limbic areas, in both males and females. Moreover, we found differences in distribution of mRNA for the two receptors in these areas. The results of this article support previously reported data and provide novel data on localization of ER mRNAs in adult quail brain of both sexes.  相似文献

Albino mutation in animals blocks pigmentation owing to a deficiency in tyrosinase, although it does not affect the differentiation of colorless melanocytes from the neural crest. In the albino Japanese quail (al, sex-linked), it was demonstrated that morphologically normal melanocytes differentiated from neural crest cells in culture and that these cells contained unmelanized melanosomes as expected for the mutant cells. The mutant melanocytes, however, were shown to exhibit tyrosinase activity in the Golgi-endoplasmic reticulum-lysosome region and in the Golgi vesicles. Our results seem to indicate that the mutation at the al locus affects the transport of tyrosinase from the Golgi area to melanosomes.  相似文献

Two-day-old chicks were injected either intraventricularly or intraperitoneally with saline or a L-prolyl-L-arginyl-glycineamide solution. This C-terminal tripeptide of arginine vasopressin produced dose dependent enhancement effects when injected centrally but not peripherally. Physical debilitation and/or aversive effects of the peptide were eliminated as the cause of the decreased responding noted in memory enhancement studies using this avoidance paradigm. Possible memory mechanisms are discussed in light of this peptide's relationship to vasopressin, vasotocin, and L-propyl-L-leucyl-glycineamide.  相似文献

The pecking behaviour of young chicks (Gallus gallus) is studied in a situation involving several equivalent targets (mealworms). The question is raised whether the successive pecks are randomly distributed or whether they follow a systematic order based on the spatial arrangement of the targets. Data collected with one-week-old chicks indicate that pecking is compatible with a probabilistic model where the probability to peck at a given place is inversely proportional to the energy used for this particular peck. Pecking by chicks is interpreted as a functional compromise between random sampling and optimal exploitation of the environment.  相似文献

Quail chicks encountered an autonomous mobile robot during their early development. The robot incorporated a heat source that stimulated following of chicks. The spatial behaviour of grown-up chicks was tested in an exploration test and a detour test. Chicks that grew with the mobile robot exhibited better spatial abilities than chicks grown with a static heat source. We discuss these results in the perspective of animal-robot interaction and of the role of early spatial experience on the behavioural development.  相似文献

At around day 11 of life, domestic chicks show a tendency to move out of sight of their mother before returning and regaining social and visual contact. We conducted a series of experiments to investigate the role of this voluntary ‘out-of-sight’ behaviour on the development of spatial memory in young chicks. We compared the behaviour of chicks that were reared in environments that provided opportunities to move out of sight of an imprinting stimulus (occlusion-experienced chicks) with the behaviour of chicks that were given minimal occlusion experience (controls). As in natural conditions, out-of-sight behaviour peaked on day 11. When chicks were released into larger pens at 14 days of age, occlusion-experienced chicks walked more than control chicks, but otherwise showed similar degrees of dispersal. Occlusion-experienced chicks tended to show better (although not significant, P=0.09) retrieval of a visually displaced imprinting stimulus than control chicks. Time spent out of sight in the rearing pens was negatively related to the number of orientation errors in a detour test. Occlusion-experienced chicks also tended to make fewer orientation errors in the first trial (P=0.07) and in subsequent trials (P=0.05). In contrast, experimentally manipulating the amount of time that chicks were out of sight of an imprinting stimulus (by confining the chicks) had no effect on their performance in displacement or detour tests. The results presented here suggest that active experience of occlusion around day 11 improved egocentric orientation towards an out-of-sight goal, supporting the hypothesis that enrichment-induced behavioural changes are dependent on the interaction with objects.  相似文献

According to our results, chicks of the Japanese quail can survive within the first 10 days of a life under conditions of the limited volume when their mobility is completely limited. However, their development was impaired in comparison with chicks housed in the common cages. Besides, the delay in development of chick's plumage has been observed. The analysis of body mass in test groups has shown that practically all chicks were smaller than chicks from control group. It is the result of feed consumption decrease (about 30% from control group) caused by the restriction of mobility of chicks. But after their transferring to the common cages at the end of the experiment, body mass in test group rapidly reached the level of body mass in control group. Research has shown that percent of alive of quail chicks maintained in the chamber of animals of complex "Incubator-2", was higher than in first two experiments. Therefore, works on improvement of devices for the maintenance of quail chicks continue, and also new adaptations develop for the maintenance of chicks in their early post-embryonic period (till 10 days) with reference to conditions of weightlessness.  相似文献

The effect of hormones on the development of Japanese quail during the postembryonic period was examined. First, subcutaneous implants of estradiol monobenzoate (EB) and testosterone propionate (TP) were implanted 6–12 hr after hatching. EB and TP had no effect on the differentiation of sexual behavior in genetic males or females. However, EB had marked feminizing effects on plumage in genetic males. Second, the role of gonadal hormones during development was examined by gonadectomizing males and females 6–12 hr after hatching and treating them intramuscularly with EB or TP as adults. EB-treated adult females displayed sexual behavior typical of the genetic female and developed female plumage. A significant proportion of TP-treated females (57%) displayed male sexual behavior patterns. Cloacal gland development and male-type vocalizations were induced. EB-treated males displayed either male or female sexual patterns depending on the stimulus conditions. Third, to test whether bisexuality in gonadectomized males and females is maintained despite steroid treatment and expression of sexual behavior in adulthood, gonadectomized quail which were originally treated with EB received TP and vice versa. The results indicate that in the absence of gonadal hormones after hatching female quail remain bisexual until exposed to estrogen, whereas gonadectomized male quail retain behavioral bisexuality irrespective of prior estrogen or androgen exposure.  相似文献

Evidence is presented supporting the thesis that performance in visual search tasks is affected by the contribution of memory processes. Three levels of analysis, corresponding to the various time scales present in a typical search experiment, are discussed. Perceptual learning involves the task and stimulus specific improvement seen across blocks of training. Trial-to-trial priming has an influence which extends over 5-8 trials and lasts on the order of 30 s. Within-trial tagging prevents the re-inspection of already attended (or fixated) items. Also at the within-trial level of analysis, parallel accumulation of evidence for target presence/absence or target location inherently involves memory mechanisms. Organizing the various phenomena in this way makes it apparent that the various mechanisms may interact in a causal way. Within-trial tagging may contribute to priming which may contribute to perceptual learning. Recent proposals that visual search is memoryless (amnesic) are discussed and dismissed.  相似文献

Aggressive behavior and whole brain neurochemistry were measured in stable and unstable pairs of male Coturnix coturnix japonica. Aggressive pecking peaked on day 5 of the daily regrouping regime and returned to a basal level on day 14. Aggressive behavior was associated with increased brain norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in unstable pairs. Habituation (12-15 days) and DA response to daily regrouping and inanition were inversely related in unstable and stable pairs respectively. Normal whole brain NE increases were attenuated in unstable pairs.  相似文献

It has been demonstrated that visual stimulation during the latter part of embryonic development will have its effect on subsequent approach behaviour in the chick. Stimulation here had been of a non-specific type, i.e. mere presence or absence of illumination. This study was conducted to see how much specific stimulation like visual flicker applied during the latter part of embryonic development would affect approach to the same or similar stimuli. In experiment 1 extremely slow flicker (6·6 and 20 c/min) was applied to the eggs under incubation. Treatment groups were tested for approach on flickering and non-flickering stimuli after hatching. Results show that exposing the eggs to flicker has an effect on approach behaviour. Groups that received flicker at a rate of 20 c/min approach faster than those which received flicker at the rate of 6·6 c/min. A significant improvement over trials was only found in the group which received flicker of 20 c/min during the embryonic period. In experiment 2 which employed a range of very much faster flicker no significant treatment effects became apparent. These results suggest that visual flicker as embryonic stimulation is effective in priming the embryo to yield better approach performance after hatching. Results of experiment 2 indicate that the effect of flicker as embryonic stimulation may operate over a certain range in affecting subsequent approach performance.  相似文献

The role of swallowing experience on the maintenance or switching of the basic visual preferences in the pecking of young chicks has been investigated using both visually attractive and less attractive seeds. It has been shown previously that chicks switch their preferences 24 hrs. later if they cannot swallow what they visually prefer whereas debeaked birds which are able to swallow large attractive seeds maintain their preferences. However, the same experiment made with glued seeds shows that the ability to swallow was responsible for the maintenance of preferences in debeaked birds. Swallowing appears to have a rewarding effect. The possibility of swallowing the visually preferred item seems to be the proximate factor which will determine whether experience reinforces basic visual preferences or, on the contrary, modify them.  相似文献

Galanin is recognized as one of the orexigenic peptides in the brain of mammals and fishes. The amino acid sequence of chicken galanin and its distribution in the brain are similar to those of mammals, suggesting that the brain galanin might be related to feeding regulation in chicks. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of galanin affected feeding behavior of chicks (Gallus gallus). The injection of galanin increased food intake of layer and broiler chicks. We also found that the galanin-induced feeding behavior was attenuated in layer chicks by the co-injection of yohimbine and beta-funaltrexamine, which are the antagonists of adrenergic alpha-2 receptor and opioid mu-receptor, respectively. It is therefore possible that the orexigenic effect of galanin is mediated by these receptors.  相似文献
