Subordinates often have to wait for dominants to obtain food. As a result, their foraging success should be less predictable and they should therefore maintain a higher level of energy reserves compared with dominants. A corollary of this prediction is that subordinates should gain mass earlier in the day and maintain higher mass than dominants. We tested these predictions with captive Carolina chickadees. In two different experiments (one where birds were given ad libitum access to food and the other with food access limited to 60 min/day), we formed social flocks of two previously unfamiliar birds and compared their energy management (body fat and food caches) while they were in the flock with energy management when housed alone. Results from both experiments failed to support the predictions. Of all the parameters of body mass and food caching we measured only the following results were significant: (1) On the ad libitum food schedule, both subordinates and dominants accumulated more mass over the day when in a flock compared with when they were solitary, and there were no differences in mass gain between dominants and subordinates. (2) When analysed separately, dominants showed a higher evening mass in the flock compared with the solitary condition, a trend that runs opposite to the prediction. Our results suggest that when in favourable foraging conditions, social interactions might cause dominant and subordinate birds to accumulate more energy reserves as a result of competition. On the other hand, if food supply is limited, both dominants and subordinates may be forced to maintain similar fat reserves as an insurance against increased risk of starvation. In a dominance-structured flock, social status may determinepriority of access to food. Birds of low social status mayperceive present and future access to food as less predictable, and so have a higher risk of starvation, than birds of highsocial rank. Theoretical models predict that subordinate birdsshould carry larger fat reserves and incur higher mass-dependentcosts than dominants. However, empirical tests of the assumptionsof these models are still scarce and controversial. We investigatedthe effect of dominance rank on daily mass gain under conditionsof fluctuating food availability in a laboratory experimentusing four flocks of four coal tits (Parus ater) each. Thesame amount of food was delivered in two treatments, but inone treatment the food was offered at a constant rate betweendays (fixed treatment), while in the other treatment the dailyfood supply varied in an unpredictable sequence between days(variable treatment). All birds showed greater variance inbody mass in the variable treatment than in the fixed treatment.Body mass within birds showed the same variability at dawn thanat dusk in the fixed treatment, but less variability at dawnthan at dusk in the variable treatment. This may be a mechanismto reduce the immediate risk of starvation at the beginningof the day, when fat reserves are at their lowest and the aggressionbetween flock members when feeding highest. Subordinate birdswere excluded from the feeders by dominants more often in theearly morning than in the rest of the day, and they showedmore variability in daily mass gain and body mass at dawn thandominant birds. These results support the hypothesis that subordinatebirds have a reduced probability of surviving when food availabilitychanges unexpectedly compared to dominants.  相似文献

Social influences on food caching in willow tits: a field experiment   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
We studied the food hoarding behavior of willow tits (Parusmontanus), a scatter-hoarding passerine wintering in dominance-structuredflocks. We examined social influences on microhabitat selectionand spatial cache distribution at temporary feeders. Dominantadult males stored food closer to die feeder and at a greaterrate than did subordinates. When alone, the birds stored foodcloser to the feeder than when accompanied by conspecifics.Conifers were preferred over deciduous trees as cache trees. The subordinates cached more in die outer parts of branchesthan dominants. There were no significant differences in dierelative or absolute heights of die caches, nor in the verticalor horizontal hoarding niche breadths between dominants andsubordinates. We experimentally removed die dominants from dieflock for 90 min and recorded the behavior of die remainingsubordinates immediately after die removal. The removal resultedin a decrease in die hoarding distance of die remaining birds, indicating that die presence of dominants directly affecteddie behavior of subordinates and suggesting that kleptopar-asitismby dominants may be prevented by rarhing farther away. Withdie dominants removed, die subordinates cached at a greaterrate than before die removal. The decrease in die hoarding distanceand increase in die hoarding rate were die only significanteffects of die experiment, perhaps suggesting that, during ashort absence of dominants, die subordinates do not benefitfrom changing dieir caching microhabitat They might be excludedfrom those new, possibly safer, microhabitats after die dominantbird rejoins die flock.  相似文献

Social stability and daily body mass gain in great tits   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents the results of an experiment on the influenceof changes in flock composition and social rank on the patternof daily mass gain in captive wintering great tits. We createdflocks of three male great tits and scored dominance when rankshad stabilized after a few days. We then moved the dominantbird from each flock into a neighboring flock, thus creatinga certain amount of social instability and unpredictable resourceaccess. Both before and after moving the dominants, we collectedindividual body mass data three times a day. When the hierarchieshad stabilized in the second flocks, individual ranks were scored. After the dominant birds were moved, the rate of daily massgain increased for the average individual. There was also adecrease in average morning body mass, so the birds startedthe day at a lower mass and ended at a slightly higher massthan previously. Dominants were on average heavier than subordinates, but we found no statistically significant effect of rank changeon body mass. The pattern of daily mass gain was linear overtime both before and after treatment. We conclude that an impressionof unpredictable resource access can be created by disturbingthe social structure in a flock, with similar effect as fromrestricting individual access to feeders. Within a flock, instabilityof the social hierarchy thus seems to have an influence on bodymass management in addition to that of environmental stochasticity.  相似文献

The nature of dominance in relationships among male Apodemus sylvaticus was investigated using multivariate analysis and by experimental manipulation of the behaviour of dominants. The behaviour of dominant mice was typified by greater frequencies and durations of exploration, approach and pursuit of subordinates in short encounters in a small arena. The direction of encounters normally remained constant over 48 h. When the dominant mouse in a dyad was deprived of food there was a change in its behaviour and an immediate change in the behaviour of the subordinate. Subordinates showed greater interest in starving, though known, dominants, explored more freely and indulged more in pursuit than control subordinate mice i. e. those matched with dominants on an adequate diet. Results suggest that in A. sylvaticus, dominance is associated with the inhibition of the activity of a subordinate and the relationship is maintained by the behaviour of the dominant rather than the deference of the subordinate.  相似文献

Behavioural integration associated with the fusion of two flocks is analyzed in captive siskins (Carduelis spinus) by quantifying changes in social behaviour with time since joining. In general there was an increase in the incidence of tolerant behaviour, supplanting attacks and hopping withdrawals with time since fusion of the flocks. However, the number of displays and flights showed the opposite, negative, trend. Taking dominance status into account, the greatest change in behaviour with time since joining is an increase in tolerance by dominants of new flock companions. Factorial analysis of correspondences was used to study how different birds changed their behaviour with time since joining a flock. This analysis showed that the introduction of new birds did not disrupt relationships with familiar birds, and that residents are dominant in interactions with the incoming new flock companions. The analysis also demonstrated that relationships within the new flock had stabilized 20 days after the flocks had joined. The characteristics of the socially integrated group of siskins are quite similar to those described by Rohwer & Ewald (1981) in their shepherds hypothesis: dominants tolerate their subordinates feeding in close proximity, offering them a profitable feeding area, but also supplant them to obtain food; both dominants and subordinates benefit from being in a flock. As a consequence, constant changes of membership in flocks is costly not only because birds lose dominance status, but also the advantages of clear dominant and subordinate roles.  相似文献

Decrease in individual vigilance with flock size is a widely recognized pattern in group‐living species. However such a relationship may be affected by other factors, such as age and flock composition. For instance, because young animals generally lack experience and have higher nutritional needs than adults, they can be expected not only to be less vigilant than adults but also to decrease their vigilance level by a greater extent when flock size increases than adults do. We investigated this issue using data on greater flamingos wintering in the gulf of Gabès, in southern Tunisia. Flamingos tended to congregate in small single‐age flocks for feeding, but as flock size increased, flocks became mixed. We found that when flock size increased, young flamingos significantly decreased their vigilance time, while adult did not, suggesting an age‐dependent flock size effect on vigilance. However, when flock composition (single‐age vs. mixed) was taken into account, a more complex pattern was found. Within single‐age and small flocks, no difference was found between young flamingos and adult ones regarding their vigilance level and their response to increasing flock size. However, within mixed and large flocks, adult flamingos were more vigilant than young ones, while variation in flock size did not result in a significant change in vigilance. These results suggest that young birds relied on the presence of adults, and hence more experienced individuals in detecting dangers, to reduce their vigilance and to increase their foraging time in order to satisfy their higher nutritional requirements. They could also be interpreted as a possible consequence of increasing competition with flock size which constrained more nutritionally stressed young flamingos to increase their foraging time to the detriment of vigilance.  相似文献

The mechanisms regulating ovulation rate under natural conditions are not yet defined, particularly for monovular species. In the present study, we evaluated ovarian structures (every 12 h by ultrasonography) and circulating hormones (every 6 h) to determine the differences between cows that developed one (single dominant; n = 16), two (double dominant; n = 8), or three (triple dominant; n = 3) dominant follicles. The four largest follicles were tracked retrospectively, and the data were normalized to the time of expected follicular deviation (F1 >/= 8.5 mm; hour 0). Follicular dynamics from emergence to deviation were similar, whereas after deviation, expected subordinate follicles continued to grow at a rate similar to the dominant follicle. Triple dominants had greater FSH than double dominants (hour -24 to hour -12) and single dominants (hour -42 to hour -6), and double dominants had greater FSH than single dominants (hour -24 to hour -12). Increased circulating estradiol but lower inhibin were observed in cows that developed multiple follicles. In addition, double dominants had greater LH than single dominants (hour -42 to hour -24 and hour -6 to hour 0) and lower progesterone than single dominants (hour -12 and hour -6). Luteal volume was similar between groups, but milk production was greater for codominant than for single-dominant cows. Thus, selection of multiple dominant follicles during high milk production is related to a transient increase in circulating FSH and LH during the 24 h before follicular selection, producing continued postdeviation growth of follicles that ordinarily would have regressed. Increased FSH and LH probably result from decreased circulating inhibin and progesterone in cows that develop codominant follicles.  相似文献

Evolutionary Consequences of Fallback Foods   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:2
Primatologists use the term fallback foods to denote resources of relatively low preference that are used seasonally when preferred foods are unavailable. We examine the assumption that fallback foods play an important role in shaping morphological adaptations, behavior, and socioecology in primates. We discuss operational definitions of preferred and fallback foods and suggest that the evolutionary importance of fallback foods applies more to adaptations for processing than for harvesting foods. Equally, we propose that preferred resources tend to drive adaptations for harvesting foods. We distinguish 2 classes of fallback foods according to their roles in the diet and their evolutionary effects. Staple fallback foods are available year-round, tend to be eaten throughout the year, and seasonally can constitute up to 100% of the diet. Filler fallback foods never constitute 100% of the diet, and may be completely avoided for weeks at a time. We suggest that the availability of the 2 classes of fallback foods have different effects on the socioecology of primate species.

White Pelicans Pelecanus onocrotalus foraging at Lake Nakuru, Kenya, spent most of their time in flocks of two to several tens of individuals, and most flocks adopted a synchronized fishing behaviour. However, the maximum capture rate when feeding was attained by solitary individuals, and it decreased non-linearly as flock size increased. Individuals in non-synchronized flocks had a higher capture rate than those in synchronized flocks of the same size. The total number of bill probes decreased with the size of synchronized flocks, but this reduction in foraging costs did not compensate for the decrease in capture rate, since the ratio of successful probes to total probes did not increase with flock size. We discuss some hypotheses that might explain the paradoxical result that most White Pelicans aggregate into flocks and synchronize their behaviour and yet they attain a lower capture rate than those foraging alone.  相似文献

Diet composition and prey intake rates of Australian magpies in a New Zealand population were investigated to determine whether flocking, non-territorial birds were less successful predators of pasture invertebrates than territorial birds. Time-activity budgets showed that flock magpies foraged throughout the day during February and March, indicative of a prey shortage at that time. Prey abundance was therefore measured in the autumn months but there was no evidence of a large quantitative difference in the food supply of flock and territorial magpies. Significantly fewer invertebrates were collected from pitfall traps in the flock foraging area, but these were counterbalanced by significantly more scarab beetle larvae and more flying insects, obtained by sweep-netting. When compared with territorial magpies, flock birds exhibited similar peck rates, prey intake rates, and earthworm intake rates. While there were qualitative differences in the diets of flock and territorial magpies, determined by faecal analysis, five of seven prey items analysed were captured in the same relative proportions by the flock and territorial birds. Earthworms exceeded their relative availability in the diets of flock birds, and more scarab larvae were found in the diets of territorial magpies. Non-territorial magpies were therefore no less successful than territorial birds during the autumn, and it is suggested that the function of flocking behaviour may eventually be discovered through consideration of why non-territorial birds never occur as solitary individuals, rather than emphasizing comparisons with territorial magpies.  相似文献

Among hunter-gatherers, the sharing of male and female foods is often assumed to result in virtually the same diet for males and females. Although food sharing is widespread among the hunting and gathering Hadza of Tanzania, women were observed eating significantly more tubers than men. This study investigates the relationship between patterns of dental wear, diet, and extramasticatory use of teeth among the Hadza. Casts of the upper dentitions were made from molds taken from 126 adults and scored according to the Murphy dental attrition scoring system. Females had significantly greater anterior occlusal wear than males when we controlled for age. Males exhibited greater asymmetry in wear, with greater wear on the left side in canines, first premolars, and first molars. We suggest that these sex differences in wear patterns reflect the differences seen in the diet, as well as in the use of teeth as tools.  相似文献

We studied long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) populations in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia, focusing on the effect of human provisioning on their demography and dietary composition. We conducted a field survey at three sites in the city: Gunung Meru, Gunung Padang, and Gunung Panggilun. Mean troop size (range 28–68) and infant ratio (range 0.38–1.00) were greater in Gunung Meru, where the macaques have been highly provisioned, than at the other two study sites (troop size 10–15; infant ratio 0.00–0.33). The macaques at all sites consumed both natural and human foods, but dependence on the latter differed among sites: three-quarters of the diet of macaques in Gunung Meru consisted of human foods, while human foods comprised less than 5% of the macaque diet at the other sites. The ability of macaques to modify the proportion of human food is a behavioral flexibility that facilitates the survival of the long-tailed macaque in urban habitats. Without restrictions on provisioning, the degree of dependence of macaques on human foods and population size could increase, especially in Gunung Meru, and human–macaque conflict could escalate. In order to create an effective management policy for urbanized monkeys, long-term quantitative data on macaque behavior and monitoring of population parameters are required.  相似文献

There is an increasing understanding of the context-dependent nature of parasite virulence. Variation in parasite virulence can occur when infected individuals compete with conspecifics that vary in infection status; virulence may be higher when competing with uninfected competitors. In vertebrates with social hierarchies, we propose that these competition-mediated costs of infection may also vary with social status. Dominant individuals have greater competitive ability than competing subordinates, and consequently may pay a lower prevalence-mediated cost of infection. In this study we investigated whether costs of malarial infection were affected by the occurrence of the parasite in competitors and social status in domestic canaries (Serinus canaria). We predicted that infected subordinates competing with non-infected dominants would pay higher costs than infected subordinates competing with infected dominants. We also predicted that these occurrence-mediated costs of infection would be ameliorated in infected dominant birds. We found that social status and the occurrence of parasites in competitors significantly interacted to change haematocrit in infected birds. Namely, subordinate and dominant infected birds differed in haematocrit depending on the infection status of their competitors. However, in contrast to our prediction, dominants fared better with infected subordinates, whereas subordinates fared better with uninfected dominants. Moreover, we found additional effects of parasite occurrence on mortality in canaries. Ultimately, we provide evidence for costs of parasitism mediated by social rank and the occurrence of parasites in competitors in a vertebrate species. This has important implications for our understanding of the evolutionary processes that shape parasite virulence and group living.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to test the effect of age and food sources on wear of the mandibular teeth of the phytophagous pentatomid, Euschistus heros (F.). The total length (μm) of the area bearing the mandibular teeth, the length of the 1st tooth, and the height of the 2nd tooth for teneral (< 1 day-old) adults were significantly greater than that of adults fed on natural [green bean, Phaseolus vulgaris pods, raw shelled peanuts, Arachis hypogaea, and mature soybean, Glycine max seeds] for 30 or 60 days. Adults fed on artificial dry diet showed, in general, similar results to those of teneral adults. Force (Newtons) required penetrating the natural foods was significantly greater than that required penetrating the artificial diet. The greater hardness of the natural foods caused increased mandibular serration wear.  相似文献

We review 69 studies of the diet of Badgers Meles meles L. in the former Soviet Union, using information from 58 Russian-language papers. Animal foods occurred more frequently in the diet than vegetal foods and constituted, on average, 62% of all intake by volume. The most important individual food categories were insects (30% by volume) and small mammals (20% by volume), which appear to be staple foods of Badgers over virtually the whole of the former Soviet Union. Earthworms were mentioned in only a few reports and never exceeded 5% of the diet by volume. Other animal foods included birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, molluscs and carrion. Fruits were seasonally important in some areas while roots, tubers, bulbs, cereals and nuts were also eaten; but in general, the Soviet literature lacks detailed information about vegetal foods. Many authors comment on seasonal variation in the diet and there was statistically significant seasonal variation in the frequency with which small mammals, reptiles, insects and vegetal foods were eaten. No largescale geographical trends were apparent in the composition of the diet, but foods which were of minor importance overall, such as reptiles, amphibians and molluscs, were sometimes eaten with high frequency in particular localities. The results support the view that Badgers are opportunistic, generalist foragers, with a preference for animal foods when these are available.  相似文献

The group size effect states that animals living in groups gain anti‐predator benefits through reducing vigilance levels as group size increases. A basic assumption of group size effect is that all individuals are equally important for a focal individual, who may adjust its vigilance levels according to social information acquired from them. However, some studies have indicated that neighbors pose greater influences on an individual's vigilance decisions than other group members, especially in large aggregations. Vigilance has also been found to be directed to both predators (anti‐predation vigilance) and conspecifics (social vigilance). Central individuals might rely more on social vigilance than peripheral individuals. To test these hypotheses, we examined the effects of flock size, number of neighbors and position within a flock on vigilance and competition of greater white‐fronted goose Anser albifrons that form large foraging flocks in winter, controlling the effects of other variables (group identity, winter period and site). We found that individual vigilance levels were significantly affected by number of neighbors and position within a flock, whereas flock size showed no effect. Individuals devoted a large component of vigilance to nearby flock mates. Central individuals directed a relatively larger proportion of vigilance to monitor neighbors than peripheral ones, indicating that central individuals more relied on social information acquired from neighbors, possibly caused by the more blocked visual field of central individuals. Moreover, some social vigilance may function as conducting or preventing agonistic interactions since competition intensity was positively correlated with number of neighbors. Our study therefore demonstrate that the number of neighbors is more important than group size in determining individual vigilance in large animal groups. Further studies are still needed to unravel which neighbors pose greater influence on individual vigilance, and the factors that influence individuals to acquire information from their neighbors to adjust vigilance behaviors.  相似文献

Summary Some shallow habitats that surround mangrove islands exhibit abruptly discontinuous macrophyte boundaries; in other regions, plant distributional patterns are less defined. Where distinct boundaries do occur, fleshy algae predominate on the roots of the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, which do not contact the bottom sediments (hanging roots), while calcifying algae dominate on the substratum-penetrating roots and banks (=embedded-root habitat) surrounding the mangrove thickets. Considerable natural-history and floristic information reveals that the fleshy hanging-root species are not specialists, for that type of habitat. Experimental transplants showed that on banks and embedded roots where there typically are abundant macroherbivores (particularly sea urchins), most fleshy algae are eliminated. The dominants of the hanging-root habitat (e.g, Acanthophora spicifera, Spyridia filamentosa, Caulerpa racemosa var. Occidentalis) are 6–20 times more susceptible to herbivores than the dominants of the embedded-root habitat (e.g., Halimeda opuntia f. triloba, H. monile). Consequently, we suggest the former are relegated to the spatial refugia from herbivores (=non-coexistence escapes) provided by the hanging roots. Factors associated with these palatability differences include higher average calorific values (6.5 times) of the fleshy hanging-root dominants, greater proportions of organic content (2.6 times) and the general absence of calcification. The dominants of the embedded-root habitat show reduced edibility as a probable consequence of low calorific values, heavy calcification and potential herbivore-detering secondary metabolites. Correlative evidence and preliminary experimental results tentatively indicate that, in the absence of macroherbivores, the hanging-root dominants, which exhibit production rates 4.7 times greater than the dominants of the embedded-root habitat, are better competitors for space. We suggest that variations in herbivory are responsible, in part, for maintaining greater algal diversity in mangrove systems. At a study site with abundant sea urchins, five algal species were found only in the embedded-root habitat three species were confined to the hanging roots, while three others occurred in both. At an urchin-free site, no macrophytes were found only on embedded-root substrata, while one (in trace amounts) was found only on hanging-root habitat and eight occurred in both. We predict that in the absence of herbivores, the species assemblage characteristic of the hanging-roots would exclude many of the dominants from the embedded-root habitat.  相似文献
