The effect of four monoterpenes ‐ citronellol, citronellal, cineole and linalool ‐ on the germination, growth and physiology of Cassia occidentalis was investigated. All four monoterpenes reduced germination of C. occidentalis seeds but to varying extents. Citronellal and linalool completely inhibited germination beyond the concentrations of 55 and 110 μM, respectively, whereas in response to treatment of citronellol no germination was observed beyond 330 μM. Further, the growth of seedlings, measured in terms of seedling length and biomass, was also adversely affected. A reduction in chlorophyll content of the cotyledonary leaves of C. occidentalis was also noticed, indicating an adverse effect on photosynthesis. Likewise, respiratory ability of growing seeds was also impaired in response to all four monoterpenes, clearly indicating that monoterpenes affect energy metabolism. On the basis of overall phytotoxicity, potency of monoterpenes was in the order of citronellal > linalool > citronellol > cineole. The results from this study suggest that both citronellal and linalool possess strong phytotoxic potential and can thus serve as lead molecules for the synthesis of bioherbicides.  相似文献

Eighteen non-sibling mutants of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO were isolated that were deficient in the utilization of the -methyl branched acid citronellic acid but not in the utilization of the unbranched n-octanoic acid (Cau mutants). These mutants are also deficient in the utilization of citronellol and citronellal. R68.45 plasmid-mediated transfer of chromosomal material has been used to map one of the mutations at about 52 min on the PAO chromosome and to show linkage of some, but not all, of the other mutations to this region. This system is of interest for bioremediation in oil spill areas since -methyl branches block normal -oxidation and cause recalcitrance of organic molecules present in petroleum products.  相似文献

Bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi were screened for enantio-specific reduction of the α, β-unsaturated carbon bond in citral to produce citronellal. While a traditional aqueous screening system revealed only Zymomonas mobilis as positive, citronellal was produced in an aqueous/organic two liquid phase system by 11 of the 46 tested strains, which demonstrates the relevance of applying two-phase systems to screening strategies. Z. mobilis and Citrobacter freundii formed 1 mM citronellal in 3 h in the presence of a NADPH regenerating system and 20% (v/v) toluene. In comparison to these bacteria, the eukaryotic strains showed at least five-fold lower citral reductase activities. The bacterial strains produced preferentially the (S)-enantiomer of citronellal with e.e. values of >99% for Z. mobilis and 75% for Citrobacter freundii. In contrast the yeasts produced preferentially (R)-citronellal, i.e. Candida rugosa with an enantiomeric excess value of more than 98%. Many strains formed alcoholic by-products, viz. geraniol, nerol and citronellol. For Z. mobilis the production of these alcohols was suppressed in the presence of various organic solvents, e.g. toluene, and further decreased after EDTA addition.  相似文献

A bacterium capable of utilizing citronellal or citral as the sole source of carbon and energy has been isolated from soil by the enrichment culture technique. It metabolizes citronellal to citronellic acid (65%), citronellol (0.6%), dihydrocitronellol (0.6%), menthol (0.75%), and 3,7-dimethyl-1,7-octane diol (1.7%). The metabolites of citral were geranic acid (62%), 6-methyl-5-heptanoic acid (0.5%), 3-methyl-2-butenoic acid (1%), and 1-hydroxy-3, 7-dimethyl-6-octen-2-one (0.75%).  相似文献

A study was undertaken to explore the content and composition of volatile oil from decaying leaves of lemon-scented eucalypt (Eucalyptus citriodora Hook.) not analyzed earlier. GC and GC-MS analysis of the oil (yield 0.6%) revealed the monoterpenoid nature with citronellal (52.2%), citronellol (12.3%) and isoisopulegol (11.9%) as the major constituents. Overall, 17 components were identified that accounted for over 94% of the decaying leaf oil. Surprisingly, the decaying leaf oil contained nearly 1.8% of trans-rose oxide, which is generally absent in eucalypt essential oil. Decaying leaf oil and its major 2 components (citronellal and citronellol) inhibited the germination and root elongation of two weeds--Cassia occidentalis (broad-leaved) and Echinochloa crus-galli (grassy weed). Based on the dose-response studies, I50 values were determined for decaying leaf oil and the effect was more on germination only of broad-leaved weed (C. occidentalis), whereas that of citronellal and citronellol were on germination as well as root length of E. crus-galli (grassy weed). Based on I50 values it was observed that citronellal was more phytotoxic and germination inhibiting in nature, whereas citronellol was a more potent root inhibitor, thereby indicating a possible different mode of action. The study concludes that decaying leaf oil hold a good commercial value for exploitation as weed management agent.  相似文献

The external morphology and peripheral olfactory responses of antennal chemoreceptors of Trichogramma chilonis Ishii (Hymenoptera:Trichogrammatidae) to host related stimuli were examined by SEM and EAG technique respectively. The antennae of male and female T. chilonis reveal strong sexual dimorphism in structure as well as in types, density and distribution of individual sensillar types. The female antennae are characterized by the presence of a single uniporous sensilla on the apical tip of the dome and numerous multiporous pitted sensilla. Sensilla common to both males and females include the multiporous plate sensilla, the peg sensilla and trichoid sensilla. Differences between males and females occur with respect to their EAG profiles to 22 chemicals commonly found in plants viz., hexanal, -pinene, citronellal, terpinene, citronellol, phytol, caryophyllene, R-(+)-limonene, linalool, carvacrol, cis-3-hexen-1-ol, ethanol, -pinene, trans-2-hexanal, -phellandrene, amyl acetate, cineole, quinolene, S-(–)limonene, -myrcene, carvone, terpineol; hexane leaf extracts of three host plants of Helicoverpa armigera (cotton, chickpea and pigeon pea) and hexane scale extracts of adult males and females of H. armigera. Individually, the largest peak amplitudes in females were obtained with citronellal, phytol, caryophyllene, R-(+)-limonene, linalool, carvacrol and citronellol while in males citronellol, caryophyllene, linalool, R-(+)-limonene and amyl acetate caused the highest response. Among the different chemical classes, the largest peak amplitudes in females were obtained with oxygenated monoterpenes, while in males, fatty acid derivatives caused the highest response. In both males and females, the hydrocarbon monoterpenes caused the least response. Thus, the wide spectrum response of Trichogramma chilonis, to a wide group of chemicals belonging to different chemical classes, though varying, nevertheless suggests that using plant information enhances its parasitization efficiency.  相似文献

Cymbopogon nardus L. could be propagated via tissue culture using axillary buds as explants. The aseptic bud explants obtained using double sterilization methods produced stunted abnormal multiple shoots when they were cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) supplemented with 1.0 mg L-1 or 2.0 mg L-1 benzyladenine (BA). Stunted shoots that cultured on MS + 1.0 mg L-1 BA + 1.0 mg L-1 N6-isopentenyl-adenine (2iP) could induce elongation of shoots from about 60% of the stunted shoots. Normal multiple shoots could be induced at the highest (19.7 shoots per bud) from the bud explants within six weeks when cultured on proliferation medium consisted of MS supplemented with 0.3 mg L-1 BA and 0.1 mg L-1 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). The separated individual shoot produced roots when transferred to basic MS solid medium. The essential oils that were contained in the mature plants namely citronellal, geraniol and citronellol were also found in thein vitro C. nardus plantlets. Citronellal was the main essential oil component in the matured plants while geraniol was the main component in thein vitro plantlets.  相似文献

Cymbopogon winterianus (Poaceae) is used for its analgesic, anxiolytic and anticonvulsant properties in Brazilian folk medicine. This report aimed to perform phythochemical screening and to investigate the possible anticonvulsant effects of the essential oil (EO) from fresh leaves of C. winterianus in different models of epilepsy. The phytochemical analysis of EO showed presence of geraniol (40.06%), citronellal (27.44%) and citronellol (10.45%) as the main compounds. A behavioral screening demonstrated that EO (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg; ip) caused depressant activity on CNS. When administered concurrently, EO (200 and 400 mg/kg, ip) significantly reduced the number of animals that exhibited PTZ- and PIC-induced seizures in 50% of the experimental animals (p<0.05). Additionally, EO (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, ip) significantly increased (p<0.05) the latencies of clonic seizures induced by STR. Our results demonstrated a possible activity anticonvulsant of the EO.  相似文献

Microbial esterification of citronellol with acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA) produced via metabolism of glucose was performed with Hansenula saturnus IFO 0809 in an interface bioreactor by using a hydrophilic carrier (an agar plate or an agar-coated filter pad) and a hydrophobic organic solvent (decane). An increase in the glucose concentration on an agar plate led to a decrease in oxidation of citronellol and an increase in the amount of citronellyl acetate. Fed-batch addition of citronellol efficiently alleviated substrate toxicity and resulted in the accumulation of high levels of citronellyl acetate. Furthermore, triple coupling of acetyl-CoA formation, microbial reduction of citronellal to citronellol, and esterification of the resulting citronellol with acetyl-CoA was also an efficient way to prepare citronellyl acetate. By using coupling systems, citronellyl acetate could be efficiently produced without any acetyl donor.  相似文献

Citronellal is one of the most prominent monoterpenes present in many essential oils. Low persistence of essential oils as bioherbicides has often been addressed because of the high volatility of these compounds. Bioconversion of citronellal by wheat seeds releases less aggressive and injurious compounds as demonstrated by their diminished germination. We demonstrated that optically pure citronellal enantiomers were reduced to optically pure citronellol enantiomers with retention of the configuration both in isolated wheat embryos and endosperms. Our findings reveal the potential of essential oils as allelopathic agents providing an insight into their mechanism of action and persistence.  相似文献

Oils and other surface films used against mosquito larvae may act by flooding the tracheal system with oil, by disrupting the surface forces that allow larvae to rest at the surface, by toxicity, or by eliciting chemosensory responses. In an attempt to identify diagnostic symptoms of these modes of action we treated fourth-stage larvae of Culex pipiens L. form molestusForskål (Diptera: Culicidae: Culicinae) with agents operating in a single mode (Ondina oil for flooding with oil, nicotine for toxicity, and the detergent Triton X-100 for disruption of surface forces), in two modes (silicone oil) or in three (eucalyptus oil, citronellal, or caproic acid ethyl ester). We monitored the time course of flooding and immobilisation, used experiments to separate volatile toxicity from toxicity of the aqueous solution, and used video and The Observer software to analyse larval behaviour.Larvae that experienced tracheal flooding applied their mouthparts to the siphon (tail nibbling), often losing contact with the surface while doing so and falling to the bottom. Nicotine immobilised larvae without interfering with surface forces, and the larvae remained immobile hanging from the air-water interface for long periods. In detergent, larvae made repeated unsuccessful attempts to thrust the siphon through the surface. The behaviour-modifying chemicals caproic acid ethyl ester, eucalyptus oil and citronellal all operated in more than one mode. They all decreased the proportion of time larvae spent at the surface, whereas Ondina oil and silicone fluid increased it.Using this approach it should be possible to identify the modes of action of novel larvicidal agents. This could form a basis for rational design of larvicides giving an optimal compromise between efficacy against mosquito larvae and minimal damage to non-target organisms.  相似文献

Five essential oils and nine of their components were compared to diethyl toluamide (DEET) for their repellent activity against the human body louse, Pediculus humanus humanus. The absolute or intrinsic repellency of the compounds was tested by applying the repellent to corduroy patches and comparing them with untreated patches. It was found that the most effective repellents were DEET and citronella, whose activity lasted at least 29 days. The activity of rosemary lasted at least 18 days and that of eucalyptus more than 8 days. The repellent activity of the oil components such as citronellal and geraniol lasted more than 15 and 8 days, respectively. DEET remained effective at a dilution of 1:32, geraniol at 1:8, citronella at 1:4 and rosemary and citronellal at 1:1. The comparative or standard repellency of the candidate repellents was examined with the aid of a new screening technique using hairs treated with ammonium bicarbonate which is attractive to lice. Using this technique it could be shown that the repellent activity of citronella and geraniol lasted 2 days and that of rosemary and citronellal for only one day. DEET was active for less than one day. Serial dilutions of these substances also revealed that citronella was the most potent repellent for lice, followed by citronellal, rosemary, geraniol and DEET. The effect of 20 essential oil constituents on Aspergillus flavus growth and aflatoxin production was tested at the level of 1000 ppm. Some of the tested oils exhibited inhibitory effects on fungal growth and toxin formation. Five oils, namely geraniol, nerol and citronellol (aliphatic oils), cinnamaldehyde (aromatic aldehyde) and thymol (phenolic ketone), completely suppressed growth and aflatoxin synthesis. Trials for determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of these oils revealed that geraniol, nerol and citronellol were effective at 500 ppm, while thymol and cinnamaldehyde were highly effective at doses as low as 250 and 200 ppm, respectively. It was observed that citral, citronellal and eugenol prevented fungal growth and toxin formation for up to 8 d. However, after 15 d of incubation, toxin production was greater than the controls.  相似文献

Gas chromatography of citronella oil showed that the Ceylon variety (Lenabatu) contained large amounts of monoterpene hydrocarbons, while the Java variety (Mahapengiri) contained only small amounts, mainly limonene. Both types contained comparable amounts of geraniol, and the Java type more of citronellol and citronellal. In addition the Ceylon type contained tricyclene, methyl eugenol, methyl isoeugenol, eugenol and l-borneol. The GLC profiles enable the identification of the type of oil and the detection of kerosene as a possible adulterant. The variety that grows wild in Ceylon (Mana) was quite different to both cultivated types.  相似文献

Citronella oil is the main product of Java citronella grass (Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt) rich in geraniol and citronellol, widely used in mosquito repellents and perfumeries. The age of the plant plays a key role in oil composition and its yield such that young leaves have lesser oil content than the mature leaves. Also, a remarkable difference between fresh and dried leaves regarding oil yield is observed. The various methods of extracting essential oils from citronella grass with respect to yield (%) were studied. Average percent yield in the manual extraction and hydro-distillation procedure was 0.8 and 1 % respectively, which was better as compared to steam distilled oil (0.7 %). The chromatographic analysis of essential oils with respect to standards geraniol and citronellol were studied by high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) with n-hexane and ethyl acetate (3:2) as mobile phase followed by its separation on plates. The developed plates showed geraniol, citronellol and citronellal as major bands. The analysis of all extracted oil samples by means of electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) in the positive ion mode showed rapid mass fingerprints of constituents present in the samples according to the observed mass of standards. Furthermore, the analysis of vibrational spectra was accomplished with Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) specifying all the functional groups as major peaks confirming all of them as monoterpene alcohols with conjugated double bonds. Thus, HPTLC, ESI-MS and FTIR studies evidenced that the two essential oil components were majorly present in the methanol extract suggesting methanol as a good extractant in the manual extraction process.  相似文献

The aim of current work was to determine essential oils (EOs) composition from three Eucalyptus species, including E. citriodora, E. camaldulensis and E. globulus and assess their α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. The EOs were collected using the hydrodistillation technique and characterized by GC/MS, GC-FID and NMR. The isolated EOs from leaves parts of Eucalyptus species varied from 0.56 to 1.0 % on fresh weight basis. The content of the EOs was distinct according to the species. The most abundant metabolites were identified as citronellal (0–83.0 %), 1,8-cineole (0.2–44.8 %), spathulenol (0.4–16.1 %) α-pinene (0.4–15.9 %), p-cymene (3.7–11.9 %), citronellol (0–8.6 %), β-eudesmol (5.3–8.6 %) and β-pinene (0–7.1 %). The EOs obtained from targeted samples exhibited strong α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. These results are encouraging and underline that the EOs of Eucalyptus species may be a promising alternative source of natural antidiabetic.  相似文献

Two genes that encode proteins which share 30–35% sequence identity with yeast OYE (Old Yellow Enzyme, an NAD(P)H FMN-oxidoreductase), the well-studied archetype of the OYE protein family, have been identified in Gluconobacter oxydans M5. The two genes are localized in the chromosome and plasmid, respectively. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequences of the enzymes with database entries revealed 75.1% similarity and 64.9% identity to that of the Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea NAD(P)H-dependent 2-cyclohexen-1-one reductase. The two proteins were expressed as His-tag fusion proteins in Escherichia coli and purified. The ability of the purified proteins to hydrogenate citral was identified. The results showed that the α,β-double bond of citral cis-isomer ‘neral’ could be stereoselectively reduced to produce citronellal by the purified OYE homologues.  相似文献

Immobilized Candida rugosa lipase was used for the synthesis of citronellyl laurate from citronellol and lauric acid. Screening of different types of support (Amberlite MB-1 and Celite) for immobilization of lipase and solvent (n-hexane, n-heptane, and iso-octane) and optimization of reaction conditions, such as catalyst loading, effect of substrates molar ratio and temperature, have been studied. The maximum enzyme activity was obtained at 310 K. The immobilized C. rugosa lipase onto Amberlite MB-1 support was found to be the best support with a conversion of 89% of citronellyl laurate ester in iso-octane compared to Celite 545. Deactivation of C. rugosa lipase at 313, 318 and 323 K were observed. Ordered bi bi mechanism with dead end complex of lauric acid was found to fit the initial rate data and the kinetic parameters were obtained by non-linear regression analysis.  相似文献

Summary Incubation of acetates of geraniol, citronellol and linalool with Aspergillus niger resulted in their hydrolysis to corresponding alcohols which were further hydroxylated to their respective 8-hydroxy derivatives. In the case of linalyl acetate, besides linalool and 8-hydroxylinalool, small amounts of geraniol and -terpineol were also formed. Microsomes (105 000xg sediment) prepared from induced cells of A. niger were found to convert (1-3H)citronellol to 8-hydroxy citronellol in the presence of NADPH and O2. The pH optimum for the hydroxylase was found to be 7.6.  相似文献
