Background and Aims

Decaisnea insignis, known as ‘dead man''s fingers’ (Lardizabalaceae), is widely distributed in China and the Himalayan foothill countries. This economically important plant, which is the only species in the genus, has not been the subject of any embryological studies aside from one brief, older paper that lacks micrographs. Data on Decaisnea are also important because its systematic position has been unstable since the genus was established in 1855. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: (a) to use modern microscopy to document early reproductive anatomical development in Decaisnea; and (b) to compare qualitatively these early embryological characters with allied taxa in a systematic context.

Methods

Decaisnea insignis floral buds and inflorescences were regularly collected from Shaanxi Province, China and prepared for light microscopy. The embryological characters studied were qualitatively compared with those of allied taxa via a thorough examination of the existing literature.

Key Results

Early reproductive anatomy in Decaisnea was documented and novel revelations made. It was discovered that the pollen is shed when three-celled (not two-celled, as previously reported), and that endosperm formation is nuclear (not cellular or helobial, as previously reported). These two newly revealed embryological characters are not found in any other members of Lardizabalaceae. Furthermore, neither are persistent antipodal cells, which we confirmed to be present in Decaisnea.

Conclusions

Decaisnea and other Lardizabalaceae characteristically have tetrasporangiate anthers, a secretory tapetum, simultaneous microsporocyte cytokinesis, primarily bitegmic, crassinucellate ovules, and a Polygonum type embryo sac. However, in the family, persistent antipodals, nuclear endosperm, and pollen shed at the three-celled stage are only found in Decaisnea. These embryological data prompted the suggestion that Decaisnea needs elevation above the level of genus.  相似文献

Colchicine has been a very useful diagnostic tool to determineif a particular developmental process requires cell divisionor microtubules; however, it produces certain side effects whichmay limit its usefulness. Low concentrations depolarize cellenlargement and higher concentrations actually inhibit cellenlargement; the threshold concentration varies depending onthe tissue. 0.2% (w/w) inhibits solute uptake and respirationin corn seedling roots. Higher concentrations also inhibit DNAand ethylene synthesis. Although ethylene and colchicine cause a similar swelling inthe elongation zone of roots, colchicine does not promote ediylenesynthesis and may even inhibit. In addition, the ethylene antagonist,CO2, does not prevent the depolarization of cell enlargementin corn roots. Thus colchicine induction of swelling in cornroots is not mediated by ethylene. The pelvis performs two major functions for terrestrial mammals. It provides somewhat rigid support for muscles engaged in locomotion and, for females, it serves as the birth canal. The result for many species, and especially for encephalized primates, is an ‘obstetric dilemma’ whereby the neonate often has to negotiate a tight squeeze in order to be born. On top of what was probably a baseline of challenging birth, locomotor changes in the evolution of bipedalism in the human lineage resulted in an even more complex birth process. Negotiation of the bipedal pelvis requires a series of rotations, the end of which has the infant emerging from the birth canal facing the opposite direction from the mother. This pattern, strikingly different from what is typically seen in monkeys and apes, places a premium on having assistance at delivery. Recently reported observations of births in monkeys and apes are used to compare the process in human and non-human primates, highlighting similarities and differences. These include presentation (face, occiput anterior or posterior), internal and external rotation, use of the hands by mothers and infants, reliance on assistance, and the developmental state of the neonate.  相似文献

A central problem in current biology is elucidating the molecular networks that drive developmental change and physiological function. Such knowledge is needed partly to understand these networks, partly to be able to manipulate them, and partly to understand and help treat those human congenital abnormalities that arise as a result of mutation. Thus far, bioinformatics technology has been of limited use in this enterprise, mainly because its core focus has been on sequence technology and data archiving. For bioinformatics to be of use in this next tier of investigations, genetic and protein data need to be both archived and searchable by tissue since this is the level at which these networks operate. The resulting databases in turn require ontologies of developmental anatomy that can provide the formal infrastructure for handling gene expression, microarray and other tissue-based data. Here, the progress in making such ontologies, particularly for the developing mouse, is reported and the uses to which they are and will be put, together with the resources and tools currently available for investigating molecular networks and the genetic basis of congenital abnormalities, are considered.  相似文献

Physiol.83(4): 1223-1234, 1997.Muscle fiber activity is the principalstimulus for increasing capillary perfusion during exercise. Thecontrol elements of perfusion, i.e., microvascular units (MVUs), supplyclusters of muscle fibers, whereas the control elements of contraction,i.e., motor units, are composed of fibers widely scattered throughoutmuscle. The purpose of this study was to examine how the discordantspatial domains of MVUs and motor units could influence the proportion of open capillaries (designated as perfusion) throughout a muscle crosssection. A computer model simulated the locations of perfused MVUs inresponse to the activation of up to 100 motor units in a muscle with40,000 fibers and a cross-sectional area of 100 mm2. The simulation increasedcontraction intensity by progressive recruitment of motor units. Foreach step of motor unit recruitment, the percentage of active fibersand the number of perfused MVUs were determined for several conditions:1) motor unit fibers widely dispersed and motor unit territories randomly located (whichapproximates healthy human muscle),2) regionalized motor unitterritories, 3) reversed recruitmentorder of motor units, 4) denselyclustered motor unit fibers, and 5)increased size but decreased number of motor units. The simulationsindicated that the widespread dispersion of motor unit fibersfacilitates complete capillary (MVU) perfusion of muscle at low levelsof activity. The efficacy by which muscle fiber activity inducedperfusion was reduced 7- to 14-fold under conditions that decreased thedispersion of active fibers, increased the size of motor units, orreversed the sequence of motor unit recruitment. Such conditions aresimilar to those that arise in neuromuscular disorders, with aging, orduring electrical stimulation of muscle, respectively.

The wood of theSarraceniaceae has a considerable number of primitive features including scalariform perforation plates, long and oblique end walls, scalariform lateral wall pitting, solitary vessels, tracheids with scalariform pitting, and diffuse axial parenchyma. Vessel elements in the genusHeliamphora have the greatest number of primitive features, while vessel elements inDarlingtonia andSarracenia appear to have modifications relating to temperate climates. The wood anatomy suggests thatHeliamphora is growing in a habitat more similar to the original habitat for the family thanDarlingtonia andSarracenia. The seedling development of an undescribed Malaccotristicha species was observed by using seedling culture and microtomy to infer the evolution of body plan with a focus on the root, which is a developmentally leading organ of most Podostemaceae. The young seedling has a small primary shoot apical meristem and a primary root apical meristem. The shoot meristem develops into a plumular ramulus, and the root meristem, into a cylindrical radicle with no root cap. The radicle transforms to a dorsiventral, flattened, capped primary root. An adventitious root develops endogenously on the lateral side of the hypocotyl and is similar to the primary root. This is a new pattern in Podostemaceae. Comparison of this and described patterns of Podostemaceae (and the sister-group Hypericaceae) suggests that the radicle was lost in the early evolution of Podostemaceae and instead adventitious roots replaced it as a leading organ.  相似文献

Semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO) catalyzes the deamination of primary amines. Such deamination has been shown capable of regulating glucose transport in adipose cells. It has been independently discovered that the primary structure of vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) is identical to SSAO. VAP-1 regulates leukocyte migration and is related to inflammation. Increased serum SSAO activities have been found in patients with diabetic mellitus, vascular disorders and Alzheimer's disease. The SSAO-catalyzed deamination of endogenous substrates, that is, methylamine and aminoacetone, led to production of toxic formaldehyde and methylglyoxal, hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, respectively. These highly reactive aldehydes have been shown to initiate protein cross-linkage, exacerbate advanced glycation of proteins and cause endothelial injury. Hydrogen peroxide contributes to oxidative stress. 14C-methylamine is converted to 14C-formaldehyde, which then forms labeled long-lasting protein adduct in rodents. Chronic methylamine treatment increased the excretion of malondialdehyde and microalbuminuria, and enhanced the formation of fatty streaks in C57BL/6 mice fed with an atherogenic diet. Treatment with selective SSAO inhibitor reduces atherogenesis in KKAy diabetic mice fed with high-cholesterol diet. Aminoguanidine, which blocks advanced glycation and reduces nephropathy in animals, is in fact more potent at inhibiting SSAO than its effect on glycation. It suggests that SSAO is involved in vascular disorders under certain pathological conditions. Although SSAO has been known for several decades, its physiological and pathological implications are just beginning to be recognized.  相似文献

An oscillator theory of motor unit recruitment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The phenomenon of systematic recruitment of motor units with increasing demand load is usually explained by the size principle. Though this principle successfully explains the gain-related aspects of muscle force generation, it does not address the need for desynchronization of motor unit activities in order to produce a smooth tension profile at the level of whole muscle, while individual muscle fibers are "twitching." We propose an oscillator model of motor neurons in which a pool of motor neurons fires a bundle of muscle fibers. Although individual muscle fibers have a complicated tension profile, the tension produced by the entire bundle is regulated and follows a command signal accurately. This is shown to be possible because of uncorrelated activity produced by local inhibitory connections among motor neurons. Connections that produce synchronized oscillations result in uncontrolled contractions of the muscle. These results seem to suggest that while synchronized activity indicates pathology and disease, desynchronized activity is the precondition for normal muscle function. Physiological evidence for the proposed theory of motor unit synchronization is presented.  相似文献

利用石蜡切片法对盾叶薯蓣根状茎进行了发育解剖学研究。盾叶薯蓣的二年生根状茎主要由三部分组成:周皮、基本组织和散生在基本组织中的维管束。周皮由木栓层、木栓形成层和椎内层组成;基本组织都由薄壁细胞组成;维管束无束中形成层,属于有限维管束,成熟的维管束由厚壁组织细胞形成的维管束鞘包围。根状茎顶端的原分生组织由3-5个鳞状包被。其衍生细胞分化为原表皮、基本分生组织和散生的原形成层束。以后由它们分化为表皮,基本组织和散生的维管束构成的初生结构,根状茎顶端下方的原表皮内存在初生增厚分生组织。初生增厚分生组织细胞不断向内分裂和其衍生细胞的体积增大,是根状茎能迅速增粗的主要原因。  相似文献

Restionaceae differ from most monocot families in having both epigeal and hypogeal germination. The green cotyledons associated with epigeal germination have a central vascular strand as found in most epigeal monocotyledons. In some genera the cotyledon may have a hairpin‐like structure, also described for Anthericaceae. The cotyledon of the hypogeal seedlings is short, without green pigment and largely remains embedded in the seed coat. Hypogeal germination is correlated with large, woody, indehiscent, frequently myrmecochorous nuts, while epigeal germination is found in species with smaller indehiscent nutlets or seeds, dispersed in a variety of ways. The primitive condition is most likely epigeal germination. In hypogeal seedlings of some African and Australian taxa an epicotyledonary rhizome is found between the primary root and the first leaves. Seedlings of African Restionaceae frequently have elongated culm internodes, whereas in the Australian species studied, internodes are very short, resulting in a cluster of seedling leaves. The leaf blades, which in most species are only found on the seedlings, are very simple anatomically. However, they appear to be unifacial, similar to the leaf blades of Anarthria (Anarthriaceae). The anatomical specialisations in the blades mirror those recorded for the culm anatomy. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that Centrolepidaceae may be neotonous Restionaceae. They also corroborate the morphology of the African Restionaceae, and the presently accepted phylogeny of the African genera of Restionaceae.  相似文献

研究了苏铁目泽米科Zamiaceae 2亚科的所有4族(Stevenson系统, 1992)共10种代表植物的羽片脉序及解剖学特征,结果显示泽米科羽片脉序为二歧分叉的平行脉,无中脉。小刺双子铁Dioon spinulosum、大头非洲铁Encephalartos friderici-guilielmii和摩尔大泽米Macrozamia moorei等的平行脉末端以不同的形式互相连接,而鳞木铁Lepidozamia peroffskyana、粗壮角果铁Ceratozamia mexicana var. robusta、竹叶角果铁C. hildae、佛州泽米Zamia floridana、柔叶泽米Z. debilis、鳞秕泽米Z. furfuracea和短尖泽米Z. muricata等的平行脉末端不连接而直达叶缘,其中鳞木铁、粗壮角果铁和竹叶角果铁的脉达叶缘后逐渐消失。羽片的横切面结构通常由表皮、下皮厚壁细胞和叶肉组成,表皮层包括上、下表皮各一层,叶肉可能同时分化出近上表面的栅栏组织和近下表面的栅栏组织,或仅有近上表面的栅栏组织分化,或无栅栏组织分化而完全为海绵组织。然而,泽米科没有典型的海绵组织和传输组织分化。小刺双子铁、大头非洲铁、鳞叶木铁和摩尔大泽米的羽片具有粘液道而无工字厚壁组织,在小刺双子铁中粘液道与维管束对生,在另3种中则与维管束轮生;但粗壮角果铁、竹叶角果铁、佛州泽米、柔叶泽米、鳞秕泽米和短尖泽米的羽片则具有工字厚壁组织而没有粘液道,其中粗壮角果铁和竹叶角果铁的羽片工字厚壁组织仅与上表皮相连,而佛州泽米、柔叶泽米、鳞秕泽米和短尖泽米的羽片工字厚壁组织与上、下表皮都相连。羽片脉序和解剖学特征支持Stevenson将泽米铁科分为两亚科的观点。  相似文献

Soil solarisation enhances plant growth even in the absence of known major pathogens. This phenomenon is known as increased growth response (IGR). Corn, cucumber, sorghum, tobacco and tomato plants under controlled conditions revealed distinct IGR in solarised soil as compared to control non-treated soil. IGR was recorded in shoots of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Rehovot 13) seedlings, 15 days after transplanting and in roots only two weeks later. Detailed studies on the third true tomato leaf showed significantly higher levels of chlorophyll and protein contents in plants from solarised soil as compared to those from the control. In addition, the degradation of these compounds, decrease of net photosynthesis at near-saturation light intensity and of photochemical yield with ageing were delayed in plants growing in solarised soil as compared to the control. The ratio of variable to maximal chlorophyll fluorescence was independent of soil treatment and was comparable to normal levels measured in other plants. Therefore, no apparent environmental stress seems to be involved in either of the soil-plant systems. It is concluded that the initial IGR in solarised soil is independent of improved root growth. Delayed leaf senescence appeared to be a plant response contributing to IGR.  相似文献
