The sensory systems employed by animals to locate potential mates are diverse. Among insects, chemical and acoustic signals are commonly used over long distances, with visual signals playing a role in close-range orientation and courtship. Within groups that exhibit a scramble competition mating system, selection on mate searching ability will be particularly strong. Clearly, aspects of the species ecology, such as habitat complexity and population density, will be crucial in the evolution of mate searching systems and sexual signals. Praying mantids exhibit both chemical and visual sexual signalling behaviour, and also vary in their ecology. This study employs scanning electron microscopy of antennal sensory morphology and behavioural assays to investigate the relative importance of chemical and visual signalling in two Australian praying mantid species: Pseudomantis albofimbriata and Ciulfina biseriata . As predicted, the high level of habitat complexity, low population density and strong male dispersal capability of P. albofimbriata corresponded to the use of airborne sex pheromones. Conversely, the open habitat, high population density, and poor dispersal of C. biseriata corresponded to a greater reliance on short-range visual cues for mate location.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 307–313.  相似文献

Comparative ethological studies of closely related species canplace into clear perspective the functions of behavioral traitsas species diverge and adapt to different environments. In thispaper we contrast the reproductive behavior of species withintwo crustacean groups: the mantis shrimps (stomatopods) andthe fiddler crabs (genus Uca). For the stomatopods, we identifyprobable selective relationships between features of species'ecology and their mating systems. Population density, the kindand availability of shelters in which these shrimps live, theintensity of predation and spawning cycles all play importantroles in molding reproductive behavior in this group. Associationsbetween the ecology and mating systems of fiddler crabs havebeen discussed recently elsewhere. Here we focus on a comparativeanalysis of sexual communication in these crabs. A study ofcompetitive courtship signaling and mate choice in the fiddlercrab Uca beebei has shown that certain male courtship signalsare highly attractive probably because they exploit female sensory-responsesystems that have been molded by selection for escape from predators.Interspecific comparison of male courtship displays and theresponses of females to these displays suggest that sensoryexploitation may play an important role in the evolution ofsexual signals in the genus. Comparative studies have advancedour understanding of how natural and sexual selection affectthe reproductive behavior of both stomatopods and fiddler crabs.  相似文献

Bittium reticulatum and Barleeia unifasciata are two of themost abundant microgastropods inhabiting the alga Gelidium latifoliumin the North of Spain. Bittium reticulatum produces one cohortannually, born in August, and living over two years. Barleeiaunifasciata shows two population groups, each one formed bytwo cohorts. There are important differences in density andgrowth rate between the two groups. The two species are separatedspatially on Gelidium. Bittium reticulatum prefers to live atthe base of the plant and Barleeia unifasciata prefers the upperpart. There are different demographic patterns in each population. This fact supports the concept of distribution in compartmentsrelative to intertidal systems. Each compartment favours differentdemographic patterns (Received 10 February 1987;  相似文献

Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.). perennial ryegrass (Loliumperenne L.) and Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum Lam.) plantswere grown on deep (75–95 cm) columns of soil in glasshousesand growth rooms with and without irrigation. The species inwhich growth declined least rapidly after water had been withheldwere those which transpired most slowly. During early establishmentin the glasshouse cocksfoot transpired least because of slowroot growth. In the growth room, when root systems were deeperand denser, perennial ryegrass transpired least because of lowleaf water conductance. Results are discussed in relation to(a) drought resistance in the three species; (b) breeding forincreased drought resistance through modifying root distributionand leaf water conductance; and (c) the use of isolated soilcolumns in water relations studies. The breeding systems of an obligate outbreeder (Plantago lanceolata)and an obligate inbreeder (P. patagonica) were compared. Outbreedingin the former and inbreeding in the latter species is achievedby self-incompatibility and preanthesis cleistogamy, respectively. The difference in breeding system is accompanied by a differencein the pollen output, pollen to ovule ratio, stigma and anthersize, and seed weight. P. ovata, a third species known onlyin cultivated form, is intermediate. This species has two typesof plants, some of which are protogynous and others where stigmareceptivity and anther dehiscence synchronize. Although thedifferences between the two intraspecific variants are not large, they nevertheless suggest that the species is in evolutionaryflux. Domestication is known to have modified the breeding systemin many crop plants and there is evidence that, in P. ovata,a start in this direction has already been made. We examine the importance of both the hydric environment ofnaturally incubating reptilian eggs and the energetic needsof hatchlings via an investigation of reproduction in Galapagosland iguanas (Conolophus subcristatus). Hatching success ofegg clutches and the size of subsequent hatchlings are bothpositively correlated with the water potential of natural nests,as predicted from previous laboratory experiments. Water potentialsrepresenting optimal incubation environments are available foronly a brief period in nature, and depend upon the same seasonalrainfall as does food abundance for the emerging hatchlings. The temporal placement of the reproductive season of Conolophussubcristatus balances these conflicting needs for water by eggsand energy by hatchlings. Oviposition occurs slightly beforesuitable water potentials are reached and hatchling emergenceoccurs after the peak in food abundance. Morphological adaptations by Conolophus subcristatus to theirprecarious reproductive phenology include greater amounts ofalbumen in their eggs, and greater energy reserves in emergenthatchlings than most other lizard species. These adaptationslessen the severity of an arid environment where water becomesavailable for periods too short to allow both oviposition andhatching to be temporally placed in an optimal manner.  相似文献

In theory, animal signals are designed to optimize transmission across a specific habitat. However, sexual signals characteristics often reflect habitat quality, a feature that does not necessarily match habitat structure. Besides, many species exploit a particular habitat for breeding so that the growth of sexual signals can depend on the additive effects of breeding and non‐breeding habitats. We combined field and experimental data to investigate the relative effect of terrestrial and aquatic habitat on the development of sexual ornaments in the palmate newt, Triturus helveticus. This species exploits a large ecological range of habitats. Like many amphibians, it spends the breeding season in water and the rest of year on land. We tested the influence of terrestrial (forest cover) and aquatic habitat variables (turbidity, organic matter, pH, nitrate and chloride) on male sexual morphology. Neither terrestrial nor aquatic habitat variables accounted for body size variation. In contrast, the size of male sexual traits decreased with water turbidity, suggesting that the expression of visual signals matched the local conditions of signal transmission. We provide experimental evidence that this pattern is not caused by reduced foraging efficiency in turbid water. We propose alternative mechanisms to account for the relationship between turbidity and visual sexual signals, and discuss the consequences of small scale environmental variation on mate choice.  相似文献

Effective visual communication requires signals that are easyto detect, transmit, receive, and discriminate. Animals canincrease the probability that their visual signals would bedetected by evolving signals that contrast with their visualbackground. Animals can further enhance this contrast by behaviorallymodifying the existing visual background. Male golden-collaredmanakins (Manacus vitellinus) clear leaf litter from the groundto form courts, which are used as display arenas. Using reflectancemeasures of the signal (male plumage) and the visual background(cleared court and adjacent litter), the irradiance measuresof ambient light during display, and published measures of photoreceptorsensitivity of a Passerine, we test the hypothesis that court-clearingaugments the contrast between male plumage and the visual background. We find that the chromatic and brightness contrasts of goldenpatches used during courtship are greater against the clearedcourt than against adjacent litter. In addition, we find thatcleared courts provide a less variable background for thesecolor patches, resulting in displays that consistently contrastthe visual background. These results suggest that behavioralmodification of the visual background may act to increase theconspicuousness of colorful male plumage during display, providingan explanation for why golden-collared manakins, and possiblyother species, build or clear display courts.  相似文献

Animals need to be able to identify other species, which iscrucial in competition for ecological resources, for using otherspecies as a cue in habitat selection, and for the establishmentand maintenance of parasite-host species associations in brood-parasiticspecies. The ability to discriminate between conspecifics andheterospecifics may be crucially important also in refinementof mating preferences during speciation and for premating isolationof sympatric species. It has long been hypothesized that speciesidentification ability is based on learned associations betweenmultiple features that distinguish species. Here I test thishypothesis using dual-choice song playback experiments withinterspecifically territorial male blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla)that defend territories against male garden warblers (Sylviaborin). I show that male blackcaps can associate species-specificsongs with species-specific plumage and also that they retainthe memory of this association for an 8-month period withoutcontact with heterospecific rivals. Apparently, yearling maleblackcaps achieve this ability several months prior to theirfirst breeding attempt. This is the first time a long-term memoryof associations between species-specific signals from two differentsensory modalities (visual and auditory) has been shown to beimportant for distinguishing conspecifics from heterospecifics.  相似文献

In situations of aggressive mimicry, predators adapt their colorto that of the substrate on which they sit for hunting, a behaviorthat is presumed to hide them from prey as well as from theirown predators. Females of few crab-spider species encountersuch situations when lying on flowers to ambush pollinators. To evaluate the efficiency of spider camouflage on flowers,we measured by spectroradiometry adult female Thomisus onustusand marguerite daisies, Leucanthemum vulgare. We compared chromaticcontrast (color used for short-range detection) of each pairof spider and flower to detection thresholds computed in thevisual systems of both Hymenopteran prey and passerine birdpredator. We also computed achromatic contrast (brightness)used for long-range detection. In both visual systems, eachindividual spider was efficiently matching the precise colorof the flower center on which it was hunting. Being significantlydarker than flowers, crab-spiders could in theory be detectedat long range by either predator or prey using achromatic contrast. However, long-range detection is unlikely, owing to small spidersize. Spiders also generated significant chromatic and achromaticcontrasts to both Hymenoptera and bird when moving on flowerperiphery. Our study is the first to identify which photoreceptorsof both prey and predator are involved in camouflage. The analysissuggests more research on bird predation and vision to determineto which extent bird predators effectively constrain spidercrypsis.  相似文献

Mate recognition is critical to the maintenance of reproductiveisolation, and animals use an array of sensory modalities toidentify conspecific mates. In particular, olfactory informationcan be an important component of mate recognition systems. Weinvestigated whether odor is involved in mate recognition ina sympatric benthic and limnetic species pair of three-spinedsticklebacks (Gasterosteus spp.), for which visual cues andsignals are known to play a role in premating isolation. Weallowed gravid females of each species to choose between waterscented by a heterospecific male and water scented by a conspecificmale. Benthic females preferred the conspecific male stimuluswater significantly more often than the heterospecific malestimulus water, whereas limnetic females showed no preference. These species thus differ in their odor and may also differin their use of olfaction to recognize conspecific mates. Thesedifferences are likely a consequence of adaptation to disparateenvironments. Differences in diet, foraging mode, habitat, andparasite exposure may explain our finding that odor might bean asymmetric isolating mechanism in these sympatric sticklebackspecies.  相似文献

Shoot induction of ABA-requiring genes in response to soil drying   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Plant responses to water deficit are dynamic and varied, requiringco-ordination between the shoot and root. Among these responsesare alterations in gene expression. The expression of four genes,le4, le16, le20, and le25, which require increased ABA contentfor expression, was studied in tomato plants in which the rootsystems were divided between two large pots to impose waterdeficit gradually and to control signals from the root in responseto soil drying without inducing a signal from the shoot. Onegroup of plants had one-half of the roots watered, another grouphad both halves watered, and another group had neither halveswatered. In unwatered plants, the expression of le4 and le25correlated with ABA content, and that of le16 and le20 occurredbefore a detectable increase in leaf ABA content. The contrastingpatterns of expression indicate a difference in sensitivityof these genes to ABA or an additional signalling mechanism.Ample evidence indicates that shoot processes such as stomatalclosure are controlled by signals from the root. This studydemonstrates that genes may also be induced in the shoot bysignals from the root. Shoots of plants in which only half ofthe roots were watered showed no decrease in relative watercontent and no increase in ABA content; however, three of thefour genes, le4, le16, and le20, were induced. Root-to-shootcommunication plays a role in changes in gene expression andin alterations in physiological processes. The expression of 28 high light (HL)-responsive genes of Arabidopsiswas analysed in response to environmental and physiologicalfactors known to influence the expression of the HL-responsivegene, ASCORBATE PEROXIDASE2 (APX2). Most (81%) of the HL-responsivegenes, including APX2, required photosynthetic electron transportfor their expression, and were responsive to abscisic acid (ABA;68%), strengthening the impression that these two signals arecrucial in the expression of HL-responsive genes. Further, fromthe use of mutants altered in reactive oxygen species (ROS)metabolism, it was shown that 61% of these genes, includingAPX2, may be responsive to chloroplast-sourced ROS. In contrast,apoplastic/plasma membrane-sourced H2O2, in part directed bythe respiratory burst NADPH oxidases AtrbohD and AtrbohF, wasshown to be important only for APX2 expression. APX2 expressionin leaves is limited to bundle sheath parenchyma; however, forthe other genes in this study, information on their tissue specificityof expression is sparse. An analysis of expression in petioles, enriched for bundle sheath tissue compared with distal leafblade, in HL and control leaves showed that 25% of them had>10-fold higher expression in the petiole than in the leafblade. However, this did not mean that these petiole expressiongenes followed a pattern of regulation observed for APX2. Pollinators such as bees are attracted to flowers by their visualdisplay and their scent. Although most flowers reinforce visitsby providing pollen and/or nectar, there are species—notablyfrom the orchid family—that do not but do resemble rewardingspecies. These mimicry relationships provide ideal opportunitiesfor investigating the evolution of floral signals and theirimpact on pollinator behavior. Here, we have reanalyzed a caseof specialized food mimicry between the orchid Orchis israeliticaand its model, the lily Bellevalia flexuosa. Based on currentknowledge of insect sensory physiology, we were able to characterizeboth the visual and olfactory signals of model and mimic, aswell as of two phylogenetically related orchids. By using acolor vision model, we mapped each species' visual signals tothe perceptual space of honeybees and found an apparent shiftof the mimic's visual signals towards the model. We confirmthat visual mimicry is present. We analyzed the flower odorsby using gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. We related thesesignals to the perceptual space of the pollinators by testingthe scent extracts physiologically, using in vivo brain imaging. We found no evidence of olfactory mimicry. The results indicatethat evolutionary pressure acts on the visual, but not olfactory, traits of O. israelitica toward a higher similarity to its model.Apparently, odor mismatch does not prevent a bee from landingon a flower that has the expected visual display. The resultstherefore argue for the dominance of visual stimuli in short-distanceflower choice. The orchid may still depend on long-distanceolfactory attraction originating from neighboring model plants.  相似文献

Pitcher plants of the genusNepenthesattract and trap invertebrateprey using nectar-secreting pitchers. Pitcher morphology andspectral reflectance characteristics were investigated for sixNepenthesspeciesfrom northwest Borneo (N. albomarginata, N. ampullaria, N. bicalcarata,N. gracilis, N. mirabilisvar.echinostomaandN. rafflesiana).Morphological measurements focused on the size of the pitcherrim (or peristome, the site of the major nectaries) in relationto pitcher length. The results show considerable interspecificvariation in morphology. Spectral reflectance measurements quantifiedthe degree of colour contrast between the peristome and pitcherbody, from ultraviolet (UV) to red wavelengths. The contrastmaxima for each species were compared with insect visual sensitivitymaxima. The six species showed a wide range of reflectance patterns, with pitchers ofN. rafflesianapossessing the greatest degreeof ‘fit’ between contrast maxima and insect sensitivitymaxima, in the UV, blue and green regions of the spectrum. Basedon the morphological and reflectance analyses, we hypothesizedthat pitchers ofN. rafflesianawould be more attractive to anthophilous(flower-visiting) invertebrates than the sympatricN. gracilis.Analysis of prey contents generally supported the hypothesis, suggesting possible interspecific resource partitioning. Morphologicaland spectral characteristics of the other species are discussedin relation to published studies on prey capture by those species.Copyright1999 Annals of Botany Company Borneo, carnivory, colour,Nepenthesspp., pitcher plants, prey attraction.  相似文献

  • Orchids are a classic angiosperm model for understanding biotic pollination. We studied orchid species within two species‐rich herbaceous communities that are known to have either hymenopteran or dipteran insects as the dominant pollinators, in order to understand how flower colour relates to pollinator visual systems.
  • We analysed features of the floral reflectance spectra that are significant to pollinator visual systems and used models of dipteran and hymenopteran colour vision to characterise the chromatic signals used by fly‐pollinated and bee‐pollinated orchid species.
  • In contrast to bee‐pollinated flowers, fly‐pollinated flowers had distinctive points of rapid reflectance change at long wavelengths and a complete absence of such spectral features at short wavelengths. Fly‐pollinated flowers also had significantly more restricted loci than bee‐pollinated flowers in colour space models of fly and bee vision alike.
  • Globally, bee‐pollinated flowers are known to have distinctive, consistent colour signals. Our findings of different signals for fly pollination is consistent with pollinator‐mediated selection on orchid species that results from the distinctive features of fly visual systems.

As shown for various species, nesting waders are non-randomly distributed on wetlands and preferentially select riparian nest-sites adjacent to limnic or marine waterbodies. Studying the redshank Tringa totanus, we tested the hypotheses that, in a coastal wader species which conceals its clutch in vegetation, predation and hatching success are affected by vegetation zonation, and that breeding in lower salt marsh areas has negative consequences for reproduction. We further predicted effects of timing of breeding and breeding experience/age of adults potentially reflected by egg biometrics both on nest-site selection and reproduction. Effects of vegetation, space, time and individual quality on hatching success of redshanks were studied in the German part of the Wadden Sea. Dominant plant species, vertical vegetation structure and nest concealment varied significantly between nests. Variation in nest concealment was relatively low: about 90% of clutches were classified as being well concealed. This variation was explainable by vegetation structure but not by vegetation composition at the nest-site, distance to shoreline, and time of clutch initiation. Vertical vegetation structure varied by dominant plant species but not by distance to shoreline and time of clutch initiation. Hatching success of clutches was low (10.6%) due to high predation (daily predation rate: 7.4%). Hatching success and duration of clutch survival were negatively and predation positively related to the date of clutch initiation. Furthermore, negative relationships were found between egg size and predation and duration of survival, respectively. We assume that concealed nests, early breeding and breeding experience diminish predation in salt marsh breeding redshanks. Thus, redshank reproduction appears to be affected by interactive effects of timing of breeding and vegetation facilitating early breeding. In contrast to open-nesting species, breeding in riparian habitats next to waterbodies may be disadvantageous for species breeding concealed in vegetation if these are covered by less structured vegetation.  相似文献

Nocturnal species may communicate by visual signals more frequentlythan previously thought. In fact, such species are habituallyactive around sunset and sunrise, when light conditions arestill suitable for visual communication. We investigated thecommunication function of a visual cue in the eagle owl Bubobubo, a nocturnal predator. In this species, territorial andcourtship displays peak during the sunset and sunrise periodsand involve the display of a white badge located on the throatwhose reflectance properties are sex and period dependent. Experimentalintrusions were conducted at 30 eagle owl territories in orderto understand the function of the white badge during contests. We analyzed the reactions of both male and female owners towarda taxidermic mount with a normal brightness and a brightness-reducedwhite badge, with both male and female territorial calls. Ourresults indicate that the white badge of eagle owls plays animportant role in visual communication during contests. Malesdisplayed more frequently toward male low-brightness mounts, which were also approached more closely or attacked. Femalebehavior did not differ between experimental groups. Furthermore,a positive relationship between male badge brightness and breedingoutput suggested a potential role of the white badge as an honestsignal of male quality. The need to convey information by visualcommunication in a nocturnal species may have promoted the evolutionof visual signals employed at crepuscule.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis has previously been shown toalter the response of sorghum leaves to probable non-hydraulicsignals of soil drying. Our objectives here were to determine:(1) how changes in phosphorus nutrition affect this root-to-shootsignalling in sorghum, (2) if mycorrhizal symbiosis can affectthe signalling process independently of effects on host P nutrition, and (3) how two Glomus species compare in their influence onsignalling. Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench ‘G1990A’ plants weregrown with root systems split between two pots. The 332 experimentaldesign included three levels of mycorrhizae (Glomus intraradicesSchenck & Smith, Glomus etunicatum Becker & Gerd., non-mycorrhizal),three levels of phosphorus fertilization and two levels of water(fully watered, half-dried). Declines in leaf elongation with soil drying were more consistentin non-mycorrhizal than mycorrhizal plants. Relative growthrate (RGR) of both mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants initiallydeclined when water was withheld from about half of the rootsystem. With further soil drying, RGR of mycorrhizal plantseventually returned to control levels, while RGR of non-mycorrhizalplants remained depressed throughout the drying episode. Bythe end of the drying episode, mycorrhizal symbiosis had eliminateddrying-induced declines in total plant leaf length. Shoot androot dry weight declines of half-dried plants were not affectedby mycorrhizae. Declines in stomatal conductance with soil dryingwere larger and more frequent in non-mycorrhizal than mycorrhizalplants. Leaf osmotic potential and relative water content remainedsimilar in control and half-dried plants during drying, suggestingthat altered leaf behaviour of half-dried plants was due tosome non-hydraulic factor. The two fungi did not differ substantiallyin their influence on leaf behaviour. The applied phosphorustreatments did not affect either growth or stomatal responseof halfdried plants to the root-to-shoot signal, but lengthdeclines were related to actual leaf phosphorus concentrations.Rate of soil drying did not appear to influence ultimate growthreductions. We conclude that mycorrhizal fungi can modify leaf growth responseto the root-to-shoot signal of soil drying, and that this mycorrhizaleffect can occur independently of mycorrhizal effects on plantsize or phosphorus nutrition. However, plant size and nutrition, which are commonly affected by mycorrhizal symbiosis, can alsomodify the signalling process. Hatching experiments were conducted on sediment samples collectedon seven cruises between March 2002 and February 2003, at fourstations near Helgoland (54°11'N, 7°53'E). Samples wereincubated for up to 12 months and examined weekly for calanoidcopepod nauplii. 12807 nauplii hatched in total. Of these 36.43%were stage N1 (pooled), 44.08% were Temora longicornis (stageN2 and older), and 17.96% were Centropages hamatus (stage N2and older). Some Acartia spp. and an unidentified species werefound, too. Hatching varied significantly between sampling dates. At three stations, counts of all nauplii peaked in samples takenin April, while at one station the maximum was recorded in thesample collected in October. The seasonal pattern of hatchingwas similar in T. longicornis and C. hamatus. In March, April,October and February numbers of all nauplii were initially low,but increased over the following 2–3 weeks. In June, Augustand December, however, average numbers were comparatively highat first, but declined thereafter. In three of the four samplesthat were incubated for 12 months nauplii hatched from the sedimentfor the entire experimental period. Temora longicornis and C.hamatus displayed clearly distinct patterns of hatching in theselong-term incubations.  相似文献
