We compared the effectiveness of passive gill nets, hoop nets, set lines, and drifted trammel nets, towed beam trawls and otter trawls to develop criteria to best determine the mean catch per unit effort (CPUE) for juvenile pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) based on selectivity and seasonal efficiency in various habitats of the Missouri River downstream of Fort Randall Dam, South Dakota. Sampling occurred from April to November in 2003 and 2004 and from March to November in 2005. We captured 29 juvenile pallid sturgeon in a total of 498 overnight gill net sets, 55 in 870 drifted trammel nets, 19 on 1683 set lines, and six in 166 otter trawl tows. No pallid sturgeon were captured in 515 beam trawl tows or 520 overnight hoop net sets. Seasonal trends in mean CPUE were found and the relative precision was the greatest in October and November for gill nets, in August for trammel nets, in April for set lines, and in October for otter trawls. A higher proportion of pallid sturgeon captures for gill nets were in the inside bend macrohabitat generally associated with lower water velocities, trammel nets over sand substrate and in the outside bend macrohabitat typically associated with higher water velocities and greater depths, set lines in lower water velocities, and otter trawls in depths >2.5 m and over sand substrate. Although we found trends among seasons and habitats for gill nets, trammel nets, set lines, and otter trawls, the catch rates were low and annual point estimates of relative abundance are not adequate to detect changes in relative abundance of juvenile pallid sturgeon in this reach of the Missouri River. Independently, gill nets, trammel nets, and otter trawls likely captured the size structure of the population of pallid sturgeon in the Missouri River downstream of Fort Randall Dam. Based on our results, a standardized protocol can now be established to systematically monitor juvenile pallid sturgeon, an essential element for determining responses to recovery efforts in the Missouri River.  相似文献

The Caspian seal (Pusa caspica) has declined by more than 90% since 1900 and is listed as endangered by IUCN. We made the first quantitative assessment of Caspian seal by-catch mortality in fisheries in the north Caspian Sea by conducting semi-structured interviews in fishing communities along the coasts of Russia (Kalmykia, Dagestan), Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. We recorded a documented minimum by-catch of 1,215 seals in the survey sample, for the 2008–2009 fishing season, 93% of which occurred in illegal sturgeon fisheries. Due to the illegal nature of the fishery, accurately quantifying total fishing effort is problematic and the survey sample could reflect less than 10% of poaching activity in the north Caspian Sea. Therefore total annual by-catch may be significantly greater than the minimum documented by the survey. The presence of high by-catch rates was supported independently by evidence of net entanglement from seal carcasses, during a mass stranding on the Kazakh coast in May 2009, where 30 of 312 carcasses were entangled in large mesh sturgeon net remnants. The documented minimum by-catch may account for 5 to 19% of annual pup production. Sturgeon poaching therefore not only represents a serious threat to Caspian sturgeon populations, but may also be having broader impacts on the Caspian Sea ecosystem by contributing to a decline in one of the ecosystem’s key predators. This study demonstrates the utility of interview-based approaches in providing rapid assessments of by-catch in illegal small-scale fisheries, which are not amenable to study by other methods.  相似文献

Natural mortality of Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) has been determined to be low (M = 0.07). Reported herein is the mortality by beach stranding of 11 Atlantic sturgeon in Scot's Bay, part of the inner Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, Canada on 22 June 2014. Genetic analyses, histological analysis and age determination were performed to determine origin, maturity stage and age of the stranded Atlantic sturgeon. Microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA analyses indicated that four of the Atlantic sturgeon (2 males and 2 females) were from the Saint John River, NB population, which was designated as threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. Seven Atlantic sturgeon (1 male, 5 females, 1 unknown) were from the Kennebec River, Maine population, that was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in the U. S. Ageing of A. oxyrinchus Atlantic sturgeon by pectoral fin spine analysis determined that the mean age of the individuals from the Saint John River (x? = 24.25 years, SD = 5.0) and the Kennebec River (x? = 22.7 years, SD = 3.5) were not significantly different. This is the first report of a stranding event of Atlantic sturgeon, and describes a source of natural mortality affecting populations of concern in both Canada and the U. S.  相似文献

This study examined changes in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar epidermal mucus proteins following short- and long-term handling stress. Short-term stress consisted of a single removal of fish from water for 15 s with long-term stress consisting of daily removal of fish from water for 15 s over 21 days. In the long-term handling stress study, there was a high level of individual variability with respect to mucus alkaline phosphatase, cathepsin B and lysozyme activities, with no correlation to treatment group. There was limited or no positive correlation between lysozyme, cathepsin B or alkaline phosphatase activities and plasma cortisol. There was a significant difference in lysozyme activity for both control and stressed fish at day 21 compared to other sampling days. In the short-term study, there was again high variability in mucus enzyme activities with no difference observed between groups. Immunoblotting also showed variability in mucus actin breakdown products in both short- and long-term handling stress studies. There appeared, however, to be a shift towards a more thorough breakdown of actin at day 14 in the stressed group. This shift suggested changes in mucus proteases in response to long-term handling stress. In summary, there were correlations of some mucus enzyme/protein profiles with stress or cortisol; however, the variability in S. salar mucus enzyme levels and actin fragmentation patterns suggested other triggers for inducing changes in mucus protein composition that need to be investigated further in order to better understand the role of mucus in the response of S. salar to external stressors.  相似文献

Fish epidermal mucus and its components provide the first line of defense against pathogens. Little is known about the role of epidermal mucus enzymes in the innate immune system of fish species such as Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), brook trout (S. fontinalis), koi carp(Cyprinus carpio), striped bass (Morone saxatilis), haddock, (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and hagfish (Myxine glutinosa). The epidermal mucus samples from these fish were analysed for the specific activities of various hydrolytic enzymes including lysozyme, alkaline phosphatase, cathepsin B and proteases and the enzyme levels were compared among the fish species. Of all the species hagfish mucus showed a high activity for lysozyme and proteases and koi carp mucus had the highest levels of alkaline phosphatase and cathepsin B. A wide variation in enzyme activities was observed among the seven species and also between species of same family such as Arctic char and brook trout (salmonidae), haddock and cod (gadidae). Only lysozyme levels showed a marked variation with salinity where seawater fish showed approximately two times higher lysozyme activity than freshwater-reared fish species. Characterization of proteases with specific inhibitors showed Arctic char, brook trout, haddock and cod having higher levels of serine over metalloproteases whereas koi carp and striped bass had higher levels of metalloproteases over serine proteases. In contrast, hagfish had almost equal proportion of both serine and metalloproteases. This study demonstrates variation in the level of hydrolytic enzymes in the epidermal mucus of fish. These results provide preliminary information for a better understanding of the role of epidermal mucus and its components in the fish innate immune system.  相似文献

Hagfish (Myxine glutinosa) secrete normal epidermal mucus and extruded slime. The epidermal mucus is produced continuously to prevent pathogen adherence while the extruded slime is observed predominantly during feeding, provocation or stress. To date little is known about the involvement of extruded slime in the physiological functions of hagfish. In this preliminary study, innate immune enzymes and the protein composition of hagfish normal epidermal mucus and extruded slime were analysed and compared. The lysozyme specific activity of hagfish was observed approximately two-fold higher in extruded slime than that of epidermal mucus. The extruded slime had approximately 3.5-5.0 fold increased levels of alkaline phosphatase, cathepsin B and proteases in comparison to epidermal mucus. Protease characterization using specific inhibitors showed that the extruded slime had higher levels of serine trypsin-like proteases compared to metalloproteases whereas epidermal mucus showed equal proportion of both serine and metalloproteases. SDS-PAGE analysis showed high levels of three proteins with molecular masses in the range of 13-16kDa in the extruded slime. The LC/MS/MS analysis of protein bands 1, 2 and 3 showed closest matches to hemoglobulin-3, histone H3 and H2B proteins, respectively. The observation of elevated levels of innate immune parameters in the extruded slime suggested that the extruded slime has a significant role in innate immunity of hagfish against infectious pathogens.  相似文献

As part of an investigation of the biochemical interactions between the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, we characterized protease activity in the skin mucus of noninfected Atlantic salmon and Atlantic salmon infected with L. salmonis and in an L. salmonis whole-body homogenate. Zymography revealed that mucus from infected salmon contained a series of low-molecular-mass (17-22 kDa) serine proteases that were not present in the mucus of noninfected salmon. Based on molecular mass, inhibition studies, and affinity chromatography, the series of proteases was identified as being trypsin-like. Similar proteases were observed in the L. salmonis homogenate and in mucus from noninfected Atlantic salmon following a 1-hr incubation with live L. salmonis. An antibody raised against Atlantic salmon trypsin failed to recognize any proteases in the mucus of noninfected salmon or infected salmon or in the L. salmonis homogenate. Collectively, these findings suggest that the trypsin-like proteases present in the mucus of infected Atlantic salmon were produced by L. salmonis, possibly to aid in feeding and evasion of host immune responses.  相似文献

The shrimp fishery is the most economically important fishery in Mexico. The trawler-based portion of this fishery results in high rates of by-catch. This study quantifies and describes the biodiversity of by-catch associated with trawling in the Bahía de Kino region of Sonora, Mexico. Data were collected from 55 trawls, on six boats, over 14 nights, during November of 2003, 2004, 2006-2009. By-catch rates within trawl samples averaged 85.9% measured by weight. A total of 183 by-catch species were identified during the course of this study, including 97 species of bony fish from 43 families, 19 species of elasmobranchs from 12 families, 66 species of invertebrates from eight phyla, and one species of marine turtle; seven of the documented by-catch species are listed on the IUCN Red List, CITES, or the Mexican NOM-059-ECOL-2010; 35 species documented in the by-catch are also targeted by local artisanal fishers. Some of the species frequently captured as juveniles in the by-catch are economically important to small-scale fishers in the region, and are particularly sensitive to overexploitation due to their life histories. This study highlights the need for further research quantifying the impacts of high levels of by-catch upon small-scale fishing economies in the region and presents strong ecological and economic rationale for by-catch management within the shrimp fishery of the Gulf of California. Site-specific by-catch management plans should be piloted in the Bahía de Kino region to address the growing momentum in national and international fisheries policy regimes toward the reduction of by-catch in shrimp fisheries.  相似文献

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) is bound by its Article II, 3 to follow an ecosystem approach to management. This approach has been extended to the application of a precautionary approach in the late 1980s. In our review, we deal primarily with the science-related aspects of CCAMLR and its development towards an ecosystem approach to the management of the living resources of the Southern Ocean. To assist the Commission in meeting its objectives, as set out in Article II, 3, the Scientific Committee established the CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Programme to detect possible effects of krill fishing on the performance of top-level predators, such as albatrosses, penguins, petrels and fur seals. Fisheries in the Southern Ocean followed the fate of other fisheries worldwide in which target species were depleted to low level one after the other. Currently, two types of fisheries are open: the longline fisheries on Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) and Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) and the trawl fisheries on mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari). Both fisheries are managed in a single-species context, however, with conservation measures in place to protect by-catch species, such as rattails (Macrouridae) and skates and rays (Rajidae). Two major problems still exist in fisheries in the Southern Ocean: the by-catch of birds in longline fisheries primarily in the Indian Ocean and the high level of IUU fishing again in the Indian Ocean. Both, the by-catch of birds and high IUU catches undermine the credibility of CCAMLR to safeguard the marine living resources in the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Sensitivity of North American sturgeons and paddlefish to fishing mortality   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Sturgeons and paddlefish exhibit unusual combinations of morphology, habits, and life history characteristics, which make them highly vulnerable to impacts from human activities, particularly fisheries. Five North American sturgeons (shortnose, Gulf, pallid, Alabama, and green sturgeon) are listed as endangered or threatened by management authorities. Managers have instituted fishery closures for the three other species of North American sturgeons (Atlantic, white, and shovelnose) and paddlefish because of low stock abundance at some point in this century. Reproductive potential in four species I examined (Atlantic, white, and shortnose sturgeon, and paddlefish) is more sensitive to fishing mortality than it is for three other intensively-fished coastal species in North America: striped bass, winter flounder, and bluefish. The sturgeons and paddlefish are generally longer-lived than the three other coastal species, and also have an older age at full maturity, lower maximum fecundity values, and older ages at which 50% of the lifetime egg production is realized with no fishing mortality.  相似文献

The epidermal mucus of fish species has been found to contain antimicrobial proteins and peptides, which is of interest in regard to fish immunity. An acidic extract from the epidermal mucus of the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) was found to exhibit antimicrobial activity against Bacillus megaterium, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. This activity varied significantly when salt was added to the antimicrobial assay, and was eliminated by pepsin digestion. No lysozyme activity was detected in the extract. By using weak cationic exchange chromatography together with reversed-phase chromatography, and monitoring the antimicrobial activity, we have isolated four cationic proteins from the mucus extract. Using N-terminal and C-terminal amino acid sequence analysis, together with MS, the antimicrobial proteins were identified as histone H2B (13 565 Da), ribosomal protein L40 (6397 Da), ribosomal protein L36A (12 340 Da) and ribosomal protein L35 (14 215 Da). The broad spectra of antimicrobial activities in the cod mucus and the characterization of four antimicrobial polypeptides suggest that mucus compounds contribute to the innate host defence of cod.  相似文献

Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) is a large, anadromous fish native to the Atlantic Coast of North America. Although this species once supported important fisheries, centuries of exploitation and habitat degradation have resulted in dramatic declines, presumed extirpation in some rivers, and ultimately listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). Under the ESA, Atlantic sturgeon are listed as five separate Distinct Population Segments (DPSs), which form the basis for federal management. Despite state and federal protections Atlantic sturgeon still face significant threats to their recovery, including fisheries bycatch mortality, marine construction, dredging, dams, and vessel strikes. However, because subadult and adult Atlantic sturgeon migrate extensively across estuarine and marine environments and frequently form mixed-stock aggregations in non-natal habitats, it can be difficult to determine how these threats impact specific populations and DPSs. To better understand ontogenetic shifts in habitat use and stock-specific exposure to anthropogenic threats, we performed a mixed-stock analysis of 1704 Atlantic sturgeon encountered across the U.S. Atlantic Coast. Collections made north of Cape Cod, MA and south of Cape Hatteras, NC were dominated by individuals from regional stocks; however, we found extensive stock mixing in the mid-Atlantic region, particularly in coastal environments where individuals from all five DPSs were commonly observed. Subadults and adults that were encountered in offshore environments had moved, on average, 277 km from their natal source; however, 23% were sampled over 500 km from their natal river suggesting long-distance movements are relatively common in these age classes. Overall, our work highlights that Atlantic sturgeon populations are vulnerable to threats over vast areas and emphasizes the need for continued genetic monitoring to track recovery progress.

The green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris), which is found in the eastern Pacific Ocean from Baja California to the Bering Sea, tends to be highly migratory, moving long distances among estuaries, spawning rivers, and distant coastal regions. Factors that determine the oceanic distribution of green sturgeon are unclear, but broad-scale physical conditions interacting with migration behavior may play an important role. We estimated the distribution of green sturgeon by modeling species-environment relationships using oceanographic and migration behavior covariates with maximum entropy modeling (MaxEnt) of species geographic distributions. The primary concentration of green sturgeon was estimated from approximately 41–51.5° N latitude in the coastal waters of Washington, Oregon, and Vancouver Island and in the vicinity of San Francisco and Monterey Bays from 36–37° N latitude. Unsuitably cold water temperatures in the far north and energetic efficiencies associated with prevailing water currents may provide the best explanation for the range-wide marine distribution of green sturgeon. Independent trawl records, fisheries observer records, and tagging studies corroborated our findings. However, our model also delineated patchily distributed habitat south of Monterey Bay, though there are few records of green sturgeon from this region. Green sturgeon are likely influenced by countervailing pressures governing their dispersal. They are behaviorally directed to revisit natal freshwater spawning rivers and persistent overwintering grounds in coastal marine habitats, yet they are likely physiologically bounded by abiotic and biotic environmental features. Impacts of human activities on green sturgeon or their habitat in coastal waters, such as bottom-disturbing trawl fisheries, may be minimized through marine spatial planning that makes use of high-quality species distribution information.  相似文献

Synopsis The Atlantic sturgeon supported major fisheries along the entire Atlantic coast of North America. These fisheries peaked about 1890 and then suffered almost total collapse by 1905. The Atlantic sturgeon is anadromous and highly susceptible to capture during spawning migrations. Further, this species biological characteristics makes it very vulnerable to man-induced changes in natural habitat and slow to recover. Atlantic sturgeon mature at an advanced age (7–27 year for females, depending on latitude), exhibit a long interspawning period (2–5 year), and require suitable riverine, estuarine, and coastal environments for successful completion of their life cycle. Today, only remnant stocks exist in areas of former abundance. Management regulations vary considerably from state to state and range from full protection to no protection. Biological data are needed to: identify and characterize specific spawning and nursery areas; delineate migratory patterns and recruitment to various stocks; establish stock abundance; and, assess effects of various management strategies. In order to protect remaining stocks, the imposition of a total harvesting moratorium is recommended.  相似文献

In vivo experiments were conducted to examine the haematology of juveniles from two relic bony fishes, Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrhinchus and shortnose sturgeon Acipenser brevirostrum . Oxygen transport characteristics (haematocrit, haemoglobin and mean erythrocytic haemoglobin concentration), ionic composition (Na+, Cl, K+ and osmolality), metabolite concentration (lactate, cortisol and glucose) and protein content in blood were measured or calculated at rest and during recovery from forced activity. Under resting conditions, plasma osmolality and concentrations of Na+, Cl, lactate, cortisol and total protein were significantly different between Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon. All other resting variables were not different between species. Following forced activity, plasma lactate levels were significantly higher in both species than at rest. Plasma cortisol levels in both species were only significantly higher 1 h following forced activity compared to resting values. Plasma lactate levels were significantly higher in Atlantic sturgeon than in shortnose sturgeon, but these levels returned to resting levels by 1 h in both species. Cortisol increases were greater in shortnose sturgeon than in Atlantic sturgeon. In general, oxygen transport characteristics, blood glucose, plasma protein and plasma osmolality were not altered by forced activity in either sturgeon species. Overall, both species had reduced responses ( i.e . the magnitude of changes in measured variables) to forced activity compared with teleosts.  相似文献

Knowledge of fecundity in fishes is important for understanding life history, modeling population dynamics, developing fisheries management and determining conservation status. Sturgeon species are known for their high fecundity but to date only two populations of Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus Mitchill, 1815) have been examined for this aspect of their biology. The species is protected in most regions of eastern North America but the Saint John River, New Brunswick supports one of the two remaining commercial fisheries in Canada. Sixty females selected by this fishery were sampled for total length, weight, age, gonad weight and egg number. Absolute fecundity ranged from 153,630 to 1,306,626 eggs, with a mean fecundity of 582,832 ± 261,806 eggs. Absolute fecundity exhibited a significant positive relationship to increasing body weight but not to total length or age. Relative fecundity ranged from 129 to 216 eggs/g gonad weight and although it declined with both increasing body size and age the relationships were not significant. The Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) ranged from 1.3% to 27.0% with a mean of 7.8% ± 4.94 SD. Relative fecundity found in this study was higher and mean GSI lower than reported for other Atlantic sturgeon populations and other sturgeon species. Differences were probably due to location of the fishery downstream from spawning sites and selection of pre-spawning females by the commercial fishery.  相似文献

Adult and mobile preadult sea lice Lepophtheirus salmonis were incubated with mucus samples from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), coho salmon (O. kisutch), Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), and winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) to determine the response of L. salmonis to fish skin mucus as assessed by the release of proteases and alkaline phosphatase. There was variation in the release of respective enzymes by sea lice in response to different fish. As well, sealice collected from British Columbia responded differently than New Brunswick sea lice to coho salmon mucus. Fish mucus and seawater samples were also analyzed using protease gel zymography to observe changes in the presence of low molecular weight (LMW) proteases after L. salmonis incubation. Significantly higher proportions of sea lice secreted multiple bands of L. salmonis-derived LMW proteases after incubation with rainbow trout or Atlantic salmon mucus in comparison with seawater, coho salmon, or winter flounder mucus. Susceptibility to L. salmonis infections may be related to the stimulation of LMW proteases from L. salmonis by fish mucus. The resistance of coho salmon to L. salmonis infection may be due to agents in their mucus that block the secretion of these LMW proteases or factors may exist in the mucus of susceptible species that stimulate their release.  相似文献

The anadromous Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus, a wide-ranging species along the Atlantic Coast of North America, is being considered for federal listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Identification of distinct population segments (DPS) is necessary but problematic for highly vagile species such as Atlantic sturgeon which may spend a high proportion of their lives outside of their natal estuaries. Characterization of genetic differentiation and estimates of gene flow provide a quantitative measure of the number of DPS into which species could be divided over their distribution and the reproductive independence of each unit. We sequenced a portion of the mitochondrial DNA control region to characterize population structure and gene flow across all naturally reproducing populations from which specimens could be obtained. We then considered these genetic data along with ancillary information on life history characteristics, historical fisheries data, and trajectories of abundance to determine the number of DPS into which this species should be divided. Our results suggest that philopatry is high for Atlantic sturgeon and that each U.S. estuary analyzed hosts genetically distinct populations of Atlantic sturgeon. We conclude that at least nine DPS of Atlantic sturgeon exist along the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. In contrast, the Atlantic Sturgeon Status Review Team has proposed a five DPS scheme for this subspecies based largely on results from nuclear DNA microsatellites, but with fewer populations represented and lower samples sizes. These different conclusions illustrate the somewhat arbitrary nature of the DPS concept, at least as applied to Atlantic sturgeon.  相似文献

Susceptibility to different diseases among related species, such as coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), rainbow trout (Oncorhyncus mykiss) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), is variable. The prominence of these species in aquaculture warrants investigation into sources of this variability to assist future disease management. To develop a better understanding of the basis for species variability, several important non-specific humoral parameters were examined in juvenile fish of these three economically important species. Mucous protease, alkaline phosphatase and lysozyme, as well as plasma lysozyme activities and histological parameters (epidermal thickness and mucous cell density, and size) were characterized and compared for three salmonids: rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon and coho salmon. Rainbow trout had a thicker epidermis and significantly more mucous cells per cross-sectional area than the other two species. Rainbow trout also had significantly higher mucous protease activity than Atlantic salmon and significantly higher lysozyme (plasma and mucus) activities than coho and Atlantic salmon, in seawater. Atlantic salmon, on the other hand, had the lowest activities of mucous lysozyme and proteases, the thinnest epidermal layer and the sparsest distribution of mucous cells, compared with the two other salmonids in seawater. Only coho salmon had sacciform cells. Atlantic and coho salmon had higher mucous lysozyme activities in freshwater as compared to seawater. There was no significant difference between mucous lysozyme activities in any of the three species reared in freshwater; however, rainbow trout still had a significantly higher plasma lysozyme activity compared with the other two species. All three species exhibited significantly lower mucous alkaline phosphatase and protease activities in freshwater than in seawater. Our results demonstrate that there are significant histological and biochemical differences between the skin and mucus of these three salmonid species, which may change as a result of differing environments. Stocks of anadromous Atlantic sturgeon ( Acipenser oxyrhynchus ) on the east coast of the United States are severely depleted due to past over-fishing and habitat loss and degradation. All commercial fisheries for this species are now closed and several state and federal agencies are investigating the use of cultured fish for stock replenishment. A breeding and stocking protocol was developed to address genetic concerns and to provide guidance for culture programs.
Several thousand 3-month old cultured fingerling sturgeon were stocked in the Hudson River, New York, in 1994. Based on mark-recapture techniques, juvenile recoveries in 1995 and 1996 indicated that wild production was very weak in that river. In 1996, several thousand cultured and marked yearling sturgeon were stocked in the Nanticoke River in Maryland. Over the next 10 months, these fish grew well and became distributed throughout the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and Virginia. The amount of useful information gained from these two examples of using cultured Atlantic sturgeon suggests a broader potential role. Without active intervention, such as a long-term commitment to using cultured fish, some sturgeon stocks on the U. S. Atlantic Coast may be lost.  相似文献
