Species prioritization for conservation is primarily based on extinction risk assessments but less on sociocultural factors that influence conservation effectiveness. Here, we prioritized mammals for conservation according to their need for conservation attention, the feasibility of their conservation, and their potential to be used as flagship species in a rural community in northeast Brazil. We assessed species occurrence and ethnobiology through interviews, camera trapping, and active searches, and developed a prioritization scheme that accounts for species’ threat level (conservation status and local hunting pressure), cultural importance, and popularity. We found Tolypeutes tricinctus as the overall top-priority species because of its Endangered status and high popularity, which makes its conservation needed and feasible, and this species a potential conservation flagship. Panthera onca was the highest priority regarding the need for conservation attention due to its Critically Endangered status but the least feasible to conserve as it was the most unpopular species. Mazama gouazoubira was the most hunted and popular species. Despite not being threatened, it may also be prioritized for conservation, given its high hunting pressure and popularity, thereby constituting a possible local flagship species. Our results show that priority species for conservation can be reliably identified based on measures of need for conservation attention and expected conservation feasibility in local scales using rapid assessments. Accounting for ethnobiology in species prioritization for conservation allows a better understanding of the needs, opportunities, and obstacles for their conservation, consequently leading to better resource-allocation decisions in different socio-economic scenarios.  相似文献

  1. Accurate analyses of the diets of predators are key to understand trophic interactions and defining conservation strategies. Diets are commonly assessed through analysis of non‐invasively collected scats, and the use of faecal DNA (fDNA) analysis can reduce the species misidentifications that could lead to biased ecological inference.
  2. We review the scientific literature since publication of the first paper on amplifying fDNA, in order to assess trends in the use of genetic non‐invasive sampling (gNIS) for predator species identification in scat‐based diet studies of North American and European terrestrial mammalian carnivores (Carnivora). We quantify error rates in morphology‐based predator species identification. We then provide an overview of how applying gNIS would improve research on trophic interactions and other areas of carnivore ecology.
  3. We found that carnivore species identity was verified by using gNIS in only 8% of 400 studies of carnivore diets based on scats. The median percentage of false positives (i.e. samples wrongly identified as belonging to the target species) in morphology‐based studies was 18%, and was consistent regardless of species’ body size. We did not find an increasing trend in the use of gNIS over time, despite the existing technical capability to identify almost all carnivore species.

New directions for fDNA studies include employing high‐throughput sequencing (HTS) and DNA metabarcoding to identify the predator species, the individual predator, the entire assemblage of consumed items, and the microbiome of the predator and pathogens. We conclude that HTS protocols and metagenomic approaches hold great promise for elevating gNIS as a fundamental cornerstone for future research in ecology and conservation biology of mammals.

地方知识在解决生态问题上的价值在国外已经受到相当的重视,但在中国尚刚刚起步。通过综述国内外地方知识的相关文献,发现有关地方知识的研究最近几年呈逐渐上升的趋势,国外研究明显多于国内且比国内深入。整体而言,地方知识在生态应用中的价值可以体现在4个方面:作为背景知识、提供基础数据、提供未来方案以及参与生态管理。国内有关地方知识的研究还流于描述层面,大多在描述背景知识。而国外的研究则更多得聚焦于怎样利用地方知识来提供数据、提供新的规划及技术方法,并强化地方知识在生态管理中的作用。结合文献归纳了地方知识在生态应用梯度各等级中的具体作用,提出了一个地方知识的生态应用框架,以期指导中国的相关科研和实践工作。以国外的研究为鉴,地方知识在中国的生态应用未来具有很大空间,地方知识作为普遍知识的有效补充,应该充分参与数据、决策以及管理的全过程,提出地方知识在中国未来应用发展的几个重点突破的难点,期望地方知识在科学规划、资源管理中发挥其应有的价值。  相似文献

Ethnoprimatology is an important and growing discipline, studying the diverse relationships between humans and primates. However there is a danger that too great a focus on primates as important to humans may obscure the importance of other animal groups to local people. The Waorani of Amazonian Ecuador were described by Sponsel [Sponsel (1997) New World Primates: Ecology, evolution and behavior. New York: Aldine de Gruyter. p 143–165] as the “natural place” for ethnoprimatology, because of their close relationship to primates, including primates forming a substantial part of their diet. Therefore they are an ideal group in which to examine contemporary perceptions of primates in comparison to other types of animal. We examine how Waorani living in Yasuní National Park name and categorize primates and other common mammals. Although there is some evidence that the Waorani consider primates a unique group, the non‐primate kinkajou and olingo are also included as part of the group “monkeys,” and no evidence was found that primates were more important than other mammals to Waorani culture. Instead, a small number of key species, in particular the woolly monkey (Lagothrix poeppigii) and white‐lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari), were found to be both important in the diet and highly culturally salient. These results have implications for both ethnoprimatologists and those working with local communities towards broader conservation goals. Firstly, researchers should ensure that they and local communities are referring to the same animals when they use broad terms such as “monkey,” and secondly the results caution ethnoprimatologists against imposing western taxonomic groups on indigenous peoples, rather than allowing them to define themselves which species are important. A new species of Etelis is described based on 16 specimens collected from the Red Sea and Western Australia, with confirmed genetic records throughout the Indo-West Pacific. It is similar to and was often misidentified as Etelis carbunculus Cuvier, with both species sharing the diagnostic character of low number of developed gill rakers. Nonetheless, the two species are genetically divergent and differ morphologically in adult body length; proportions of eye, snout, cheek and caudal fin; shape of head, opercular spine and sagittal otolith; and coloration of the tip of the upper caudal fin. Etelis boweni has a wide Indo-west Pacific distribution that largely overlaps with E. carbunculus, and the two species are often caught on the same fishing line.  相似文献

当地生态知识(local ecological knowledge,LEK)是指人们在长期的生活体验和生产实践中,获得的有关周边环境、生物资源及其相互关系的经验和知识。近几十年来,LEK在海洋哺乳动物研究中得到了广泛的应用和发展,尤其是在基础相对薄弱的发展中国家或地区,LEK作为一种低成本、短周期且适合大范围调查的手段,日益成为研究人员获取目标物种生态信息的重要渠道。LEK与野外实地调查等获得的数据可以互补,从而为评估海洋哺乳动物的生存状况和环境变化提供多维度的信息来源;该方法还往往是了解目标物种生存状况历史变动的有效手段,回答传统方法很难甚至无法回答的科学问题,如目标物种在较长时间尺度上的生态信息历史变化趋势等。本文介绍了LEK的定义及特征、海洋哺乳动物及其传统生态调查方法、LEK在海洋哺乳动物中的研究进展、应用LEK开展海洋哺乳动物研究的步骤,还讨论了LEK在我国海洋哺乳动物研究中的应用前景和推广价值,旨在为今后相关研究提供参考资料。  相似文献

A multivariate analysis derived from principal components analysis (PCA), and which allows the investigation on diet composition data, is introduced. To illustrate the method, prey composition data of stomach contents of brown trout Salmo trutta L. collected in a regulated stream were used. The diet composition, foraging strategies and related patterns of fish diet variation were analysed at a macrohabitat scale (i.e. riffles and glides) by way of biplots. Arboreal termites (Nasutitermes spp.) and stomach contents from tamanduas (Tamandua tetradactyla) were collected in central Venezuela during the mid part of the dry season (March) of 1993 and 1994. Nutritional analyses were performed on each caste (workers n = 3), soldiers (n = 5), and alates [n = (1]), on mixed caste samples (n = 1), and on stomach contents from live (n = 5) and roadkill (n = 5) tamanduas. The chemical analysis, expressed on a dry matter (DM) basis, of termite workers, which constituted the majority of the nest populations, showed the highest crude protein (CP) (67%) and the lowest DM (25%) and fat (2%) values. Ash content varied from a low of 4% in alates to a high of 7% in soldiers. The alates contained substantially higher DM (41%) and fat (40%), which was reflected in a higher caloric value (6.88 kcal/g) (gross energy) [GE], and relatively less CP (49%). Among the macrominerals, potassium (K) was consistently the highest, with an overall mean value of 0.54%, while the calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) levels showed overall means of 0.26% and 0.67%, respectively. Iron (Fe) was the highest among the trace minerals but highly variable (soldiers, 1,000 ppm; alates, 246 ppm; workers, 394 ppm). Differences in the concentrations of vitamin A and E were found among termites castes, with soldiers showing the highest values (20 and 85 μg/g for retinol and α-tocopherol, respectively). Acid detergent fiber (ADF) was lower in the alates (13%) and workers (27%) compared to the soldiers (35%). Alates' fat was more saturated (39%), while soldiers and workers had a much higher polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) concentration. In general, similar nutrient profiles were found between the tamandua stomach contents and the overall mean composition of Nasutitermes spp. However, stomach contents had much higher ADF, ash, and Fe concentrations (31%, 14%, and 2,748 ppm) than termites (25%, 5%, and 652 ppm) but lower CP, fat, GE, and Ca values (51%, 11%, 4.58 kcal/g, and 0.11% vs. 58%, 15%, 6.01 kcal/g, and 0.26% in termites). The relatively low concentrations of Ca in both stomach contents and termites may be indicative of a low requirement in Myrmecophaga compared to other mammalian species. Diets consumed by free-ranging tamanduas contained on a DM basis 51% CP, 11% fat, 14% ash, 31% ADF, 4.58 kcal/g GE, 0.11% Ca, 0.41% P, 2.52 μg/g retinol, and 44.3 μg/g α-tocopherol. The diets of 99 pumpkinseed sunfish Lepomis gibbosus from a pair of small, adjacent lakes in Ontario, Canada, were estimated from their stomach contents, trophically transmitted parasites and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen in fish tissue. The three methods provided virtually unrelated information. There was no significant correlation in the importance of any prey item across all three methods. Fish with similar diets according to one method of estimating diet showed no tendency to be similar according to other methods. Although there was limited variation in fish size and the spatial scale of the study was small, both fish size and spatial origin showed comparatively strong associations with diet data obtained with all three methods. These results suggest that a multidisciplinary approach that accounts for fish size and spatial origins is necessary to accurately characterize diets of individual fish.  相似文献

We evaluated puma (Puma concolor) feeding patterns in southeastern Brazilian agricultural landscapes using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses of hair collected from fecal samples (= 64). We classified the samples into three groups: feeding patterns based on forest remnants, on the agricultural matrix or both. We observed a predominance of consumption of C3 prey (~47% of individuals) in the area with the highest proportion of forest coverage. Conversely, C4 prey were highly consumed (~40% of individuals) where the agricultural matrix was predominant. The δ13C values for pumas in both areas indicated that their food resources come from both forest remnants and the agricultural matrix and that some individuals preferentially consumed C4 prey, indicating that food resources from the agricultural matrix make up most of their diet (~46% of prey individuals). The wide range of puma's δ15N values in both areas indicated a diet based on different types of prey. However, the C4 group had higher values, indicating that both pumas and their prey feed on enriched resources from the agricultural matrix. The results confirm the high behavioral plasticity of pumas in using highly anthropogenic habitats. The stable isotope analyses conducted in this study yielded new information on large carnivore trophic ecology that might be useful in the development of new conservation strategies in disturbed areas.  相似文献

Rangelands are among the most extensive anthropogenic landscapes on earth, supporting nearly 500 million people. Disagreements over the extent and severity of rangeland degradation affect pastoralist livelihoods, especially when impacts of drought and over-grazing are confounded. While vegetation indices (such as NDVI, or Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) derived from remotely sensed imagery are often used to monitor rangelands, their strategic integration with local ecological knowledge (LEK) is under-appreciated. Here, we explore these complementary approaches in Kyrgyzstan’s pasture-rich province of Naryn, where disagreements regarding pasture degradation could greatly benefit from additional information. We examine a time series of MODIS satellite imagery (2000–2015) to characterize browning trends in vegetation as well as to distinguish between climate- and grazing-induced trends. We also compare and contrast measured trends with LEK perceptions of pasture degradation. To do so, we first examine statistical trends in NDVI as well as in NDVI residuals after de-trending with meteorological data. Second, we use participatory mapping to identify areas local pasture managers believe are overgrazed, a particularly useful approach in lieu of reliable historical stocking rates for livestock in this region. Lastly, we compare the strengths and weaknesses of LEK and remote sensing for landscape monitoring.Browning trends were widespread as declining trends in NDVI (and NDVI residuals) covered 24% (and 9%) of the landscape, respectively. Local managers’ perceptions of pasture degradation better reflected trends seen in NDVI than in climate-controlled NDVI residuals, suggesting patterns in the latter are less apparent to managers. Our approach demonstrated great potential for the integration of two inexpensive and effective methods of rangeland monitoring well-suited to the country’s needs. Despite limitations due to terrain, our approach was most successful within the semi-arid steppe where pasture degradation is believed to be most severe. In many parts of the world, sources of long-term spatially extensive data are rare or even non-existent. Thus, paired LEK and remote sensing can contribute to comprehensive and informative assessments of land degradation, especially where contentious management issues intersect with sparse data availability. LEK is a valuable source of complementary information to remote sensing and should be integrated more routinely and formally into landscape monitoring. To aid this endeavor, we synthesize advice for linking LEK and remote sensing across diverse landscape situations.  相似文献

Studies of food relations are important to our understanding of ecology at the individual, population and community levels. Detailed documentation of the diet of large‐bodied, widespread snakes allows us to assess size‐dependent and geographical variation in feeding preferences of gape‐limited predators. Furthermore, with knowledge of the food habits of sympatric taxa we can explore possible causes of interspecific differences in trophic niches. The feeding ecology of the North American gopher snake, Pituophis catenifer, was studied based on the stomach contents of more than 2600 preserved and free‐ranging specimens, and published and unpublished dietary records. Of 1066 items, mammals (797, 74.8%), birds (86, 8.1%), bird eggs (127, 11.9%), and lizards (35, 3.3%) were the most frequently eaten prey. Gopher snakes fed upon subterranean, nocturnal and diurnal prey. The serpents are primarily diurnal, but can also be active at night. Therefore, gopher snakes captured their victims by actively searching underground tunnel systems, retreat places and perching sites during the day, or by pursuing them or seizing them while they rested at night. Gopher snakes of all sizes preyed on mammals, but only individuals larger than 40 and 42 cm in snout–vent length took bird eggs and birds, respectively, possibly due to gape constraints in smaller serpents. Specimens that ate lizards were smaller than those that consumed mammals or birds. Gopher snakes raided nests regularly, as evidenced by the high frequency of nestling mammals and birds and avian eggs eaten. Most (332) P. catenifer contained single prey, but 95 animals contained 2–35 items. Of the 321 items for which direction of ingestion was determined, 284 (88.5%) were swallowed head‐first, 35 (10.9%) were ingested tail‐first, and two (0.6%) were taken sideways. Heavier gopher snakes took heavier prey, but heavier serpents ingested prey with smaller mass relative to snake mass, evidence that the lower limit of prey mass did not increase with snake mass. Specimens from the California Province and Arid Deserts (i.e. Mojave, Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts) took the largest proportion of lizards, whereas individuals from the Great Basin Desert consumed a higher percentage of mammals than serpents from other areas, and P. catenifer from the Great Plains ate a greater proportion of bird eggs. Differences in prey availability among biogeographical regions and unusual circumstances of particular gopher snake populations may account for these patterns. Gopher snakes have proportionally longer heads than broadly sympatric Rhinocheilus lecontei (long‐nosed snake), Charina bottae (rubber boa) and Lampropeltis zonata (California mountain kingsnake), which perhaps explains why, contrary to the case in P. catenifer, the smaller size classes of those three species do not eat mammals. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2002, 77 , 165–183.  相似文献

After briefly reviewing the evidence that meiofauna are an integral part of the complex food web of invertebrate infaunal and epifaunal organisms, it is shown that, at least in intertidal and shallow subtidal habitats, meiofauna are an important food for the small (30–60 mm) juveniles of some commercially important fishes (flatfish and salmonids) or for fish which are themselves food for commercial species. The evidence that fish feed preferentially on a few species of harpacticoid copepod rather than on the numerically dominant meiofaunal taxa is presented and discussed. It is argued that, in addition to benthic copepods being energetically efficient as food for fishes, it is differences in the activity and availability between major taxa of meiofauna as they relate to the feeding strategies of the fish which go a long way to explaining this apparent general preference of fish for harpacticoid copepods rather than nematodes. From literature estimates of consumption rates, it is concluded that the supply of meiofaunal food to juvenile fish is unlikely to be limiting although this may not be the case in some shallow subtidal muddy sand habitats. Whilst it is recognized that fish predation may influence the magnitude of the seasonal peaks in numbers, predation is not the principal cause of seasonal fluctuations in harpacticoid copepod species abundances. The effects of predation on other aspects of community structure is unknown. Finally, the possible role of meiofauna in mariculture systems is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Background

Seahorses are endangered teleost fishes under increasing human pressures worldwide. In Brazil, marine conservationists and policy-makers are thus often skeptical about the viability of sustainable human-seahorse interactions. This study focuses on local ecological knowledge on seahorses and the implications of their non-lethal touristic use by a coastal community in northeastern Brazil. Community-based seahorse-watching activities have been carried out in Maracaípe village since 1999, but remained uninvestigated until the present study. Our goal is to provide ethnoecological understanding on this non-extractive use to support seahorse conservation and management.

Methods

We interviewed 32 informants through semi-structured questionnaires to assess their socioeconomic profile, their knowledge on seahorse natural history traits, human uses, threats and abundance trends.

Results

Seahorse-watching has high socioeconomic relevance, being the primary income source for all respondents. Interviewees elicited a body of knowledge on seahorse biology largely consistent with up-to-date research literature. Most informants (65.5 %) perceived no change in seahorse abundance. Their empirical knowledge often surpassed scientific reports, i.e. through remarks on trophic ecology; reproductive aspects, such as, behavior and breeding season; spatial and temporal distribution, suggesting seahorse migration related to environmental parameters.

Conclusions

Seahorse-watching operators were aware of seahorse biological and ecological aspects. Despite the gaps remaining on biological data about certain seahorse traits, the respondents provided reliable information on all questions, adding ethnoecological remarks not yet assessed by conventional scientific surveys. We provide novel ethnobiological insight on non-extractive modes of human-seahorse interaction, eliciting environmental policies to integrate seahorse conservation with local ecological knowledge and innovative ideas for seahorse sustainable use. Our study resonates with calls for more active engagement with communities and their local ecologies if marine conservation and development are to be reconciled.

Local ecological knowledge (LEK) of those who earn their livelihoods from natural environments has long been recognized as providing far-reaching insights into ecological processes. It is being increasingly used by ecologists to address diverse questions that often focus on applied conservation issues and may incorporate local knowledge with biological data from more conventional research and monitoring. We characterize how LEK has been used in the ecological and conservation literature over the last 25 years by broadly examining 360 journals and by evaluating 12 prominent ecological and conservation journals in greater detail. Over this period, the use of LEK has increased considerably, although only 0.01% of papers in the broad and 0.42% of those in the more detailed evaluation incorporated LEK. Despite this increase, LEK-based publications remain nearly absent from the more established theoretical literature and are largely restricted to more recent and arguably less prestigious applied and interdisciplinary journals. Most LEK studies used interviews, but generally failed to actively include community members in the research process. Changes to the research and publishing process that include local people and address these shortcomings and the broader issues of power and influence in the sciences are critical to the successful utilization of LEK. These changes are necessary for the appropriate depiction of these knowledge systems and to ensure that local knowledge holders will continue participating in ecological research aimed at conservation.  相似文献

Methods for establishing biodiversity conservation priorities are urgently required, as the number of species and habitats that are threatened increases relative to the material resources available for their conservation. The identification of priority areas demands the integration of biophysical data on ecosystems together with social data on human pressures and planning opportunities. But comprehensive and reliable data are rarely available to demarcate where the need for action is most urgent and where the benefits of conservation strategies can be maximized. Strategic conservation initiatives cannot wait for the creation of comprehensive databases. In order to fill the missing data gaps, the combined knowledge of local and technical experts can be used. This study presents a collaborative geographic information system (GIS) method for integrating the knowledge of local and technical experts with existing spatial environmental data to establish priority areas for biodiversity conservation. Procedures for structuring and framing the discussions, establishing assessment criteria, integrating knowledge with data, and building consensus are incorporated into the method. The method provides a novel cooperative mechanism to aid spatial knowledge management and inclusive biodiversity planning.  相似文献

In 2005, southwestern Amazonia experienced the effects of an intense drought that affected life and biodiversity. Several major tributaries as well as parts of the main river itself contained only a fraction of their normal volumes of water, and lakes were drying up. The consequences for local people, animals and the forest itself are impossible to estimate now, but they are likely to be serious. The analyses indicate that the drought was manifested as weak peak river season during autumn to winter as a consequence of a weak summertime season in southwestern Amazonia; the winter season was also accompanied by rainfall that sometimes reached 25% of the climatic value, being anomalously warm and dry and helping in the propagation of fires. Analyses of climatic and hydrological records in Amazonia suggest a broad consensus that the 2005 drought was linked not to El Niño as with most previous droughts in the Amazon, but to warming sea surface temperatures in the tropical North Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

蓝圆鲹是浙江南部近海的重要经济鱼类。本文根据2020年5月、8月、11月和2021年1月在浙江南部近海进行的底拖网调查,应用胃含物分析和碳氮稳定同位素分析对浙江南部近海蓝圆鲹的摄食习性进行研究。结果表明: 浙江南部近海蓝圆鲹δ13C平均值为(-16.55±0.60)‰,范围为-17.76‰~-15.25‰,与叉长呈显著负相关;蓝圆鲹δ15N平均值为(11.76±0.88)‰,范围为9.06‰~13.03‰,与叉长呈显著正相关。根据δ15N值计算浙江南部近海蓝圆鲹的平均营养级为3.89±0.26。胃含物分析表明,浙江南部近海蓝圆鲹的主要饵料类群为鱼类、虾类、蟹类、头足类、多毛类和小型甲壳类。稳定同位素分析表明,虾类对浙江南部近海蓝圆鲹的营养贡献率最高(40%~84%),其次为多毛类、小型甲壳类、蟹类、头足类和鱼类。蓝圆鲹的摄食习性有明显的生长变化,随着蓝圆鲹叉长的增加,其倾向于摄食更高营养级的饵料生物。  相似文献
