The growth, reproduction and condition of adults of the three dominant fish species (roach, Rutilus rutilus, (L.); perch, Perca fluviatilis, L. and ruffe, Gymnocephalus cernuus, (L.)) in the eutrophic Lake Aydat were studied over one year cycle. Compared to published data, the growth of R. rutilus and G. cernuus was about average, while that of P. fluviatilis was below average. Comparing to literature, the fecundity of R. rutilus and G. cernuus was low but their oocytes were large. In contrast, P. fluviatilis had a high fecundity but small oocytes. At the end of summer, an abrupt decrease in the condition was recorded only for perch, probably due to stress as a result of environmental conditions. The sex-ratio was in favour of females for the three studied species but, in contrast to G. cernuus, the sex-ratio of R. rutilus and P. fluviatilis increased significantly also with age. It is concluded that Lake Aydat is a more favourable environment for R. rutilus and G. cernuus than for P. fluviatilis.  相似文献

The coexistence of competing species relies on niche partitioning. Competitive exclusion is likely inevitable at high niche overlap, but such divide between competitors may be bridged if environmental circumstances displace competitor niches to enhance partitioning. Foraging‐niche dimension can be influenced by environmental characteristics, and if competitors react differently to such conditions, coexistence can be facilitated. We here experimentally approach the partitioning effects of environmental conditions by evaluating the influence of water turbulence on foraging‐niche responses in two competing fish species, Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis and roach Rutilus rutilus, selecting from planktonic and benthic prey. In the absence of turbulence, both fish species showed high selectivity for benthic chironomid larvae. R. rutilus fed almost exclusively on zoobenthos, whereas P. fluviatilis complemented the benthic diet with zooplankton (mainly copepods). In turbulent water, on the other hand, the foraging‐niche widths of both R. rutilus and P. fluviatilis increased, while their diet overlap simultaneously decreased, caused by 20% of the R. rutilus individuals turning to planktonic (mainly bosminids) prey, and by P. fluviatilis increasing foraging on littoral/benthic food sources. We show that moderate physical disturbance of environments, such as turbulence, can enhance niche partitioning and thereby coexistence of competing foragers. Turbulence affects prey but not fish swimming capacities, with consequences for prey‐specific distributions and encounter rates with fish of different foraging strategies (pause‐travel P. fluviatilis and cruise R. rutilus). Water turbulence and prey community structure should hereby affect competitive interaction strengths among fish species, with consequences for coexistence probability as well as community and system compositions.  相似文献

We studied the hypothesis that fish play an important role in lake use by ducks (pairs and broods) in boreal lakes. The study was based on densities of different duck and fish species in 28 boreal lakes in southern Finland. We focused on the three most common duck species (mallard Anas platyrhynchos, green-winged teal A. crecca and common goldeneye Bucephala clangula) and on the three most common fish species (perch Perca fluviatilis, roach Rutilus rutilus and pike Esox lucius) in the region. We considered both competitive and predatory interactions between ducks and fish, the perch and roach being potential competitors with ducks and the pike a potential predator of ducks. We found a negative association between green-winged teal brood density and total fish density, the other duck species having only a weak association with total fish density. When the three fish species were considered separately, a negative association, suggesting food competition, was found between perch, green-winged teal and goldeneye, whereas the role of roach as a food competitor seemed to be of minor importance. We did not find any clear signs of predatory effects of pike on ducks. Our results suggest that food competition is a more important factor than pike predation in affecting lake use by ducks in oligotrophic boreal environments in southern Finland.  相似文献

The effects of disturbances from recreational activities on the swimming speed and habitat use of roach Rutilus rutilus, perch Perca fluviatilis and pike Esox lucius were explored. Disturbances were applied for 4 h as (1) boating in short intervals with a small outboard internal combustion engine or (2) boating in short intervals combined with angling with artificial lures between engine runs. The response of the fish species was evaluated by high‐resolution tracking using an automatic acoustic telemetry system and transmitters with sub‐minute burst rates. Rutilus rutilus swimming speed was significantly higher during disturbances [both (1) and (2)] with an immediate reaction shortly after the engine started. Perca fluviatilis displayed increased swimming activity during the first hour of disturbance but not during the following hours. Swimming activity of E. lucius was not significantly different between disturbance periods and the same periods on days without disturbance (control). Rutilus rutilus increased their use of the central part of the lake during disturbances, whereas no habitat change was observed in P. fluviatilis and E. lucius. No difference in fish response was detected between the two types of disturbances (boating with and without angling), indicating that boating was the primary source of disturbance. This study highlights species‐specific responses to recreational boating and may have implications for management of human recreational activities in lakes.  相似文献

We identified, staged and counted the immature stages of mosquitoes from 1,826 censuses (with replacement) of the aquatic contents of ten treeholes surveyed every 2 weeks between 1978 and 1993. These time series were used to examine the population dynamics and effect on prey of the predatory mosquito Toxorhynchites rutilus. The mean annual frequency of occurrence of T. rutilus ranged from 0.02 to 0.67 among holes, and no fourth instars were recovered during a 30-month dry period. Oviposition and pupation by this species were recorded in all months, but most commonly in the spring. Overwintering larvae of the predator increased in weight during the prolonged fourth instar that preceded pupation in the spring. Time series analyses showed that the presence of a fourth instar T. rutilus significantly reduced the abundances of late-stage Aedes triseriatus mosquitoes. Pupal numbers of this prey species were more negatively affected by T. rutilus than were numbers of fourth instar A. triseriatus. Long-term declines in mean annual abundance of A. triseriatus prey during 16 years of observations on two holes were not correlated with increases in the mean annual frequencies of T. rutilus. Local extinctions of the aquatic stages of A. triseriatus within treeholes were common, but in most holes not significantly associated with the presence of T. rutilus, suggesting that predation does not routinely drive mosquito prey locally extinct in this ecosystem. The decoupling of T. rutilus and A. triseriatus, as revealed through these complete and long-term censuses, is contrasted with other reports of generalist predators causing extinctions of mosquito prey. Discrepancies among reported outcomes probably result from differences in duration of sampling periods and statistical procedures along with real differences in the intensity of predation among systems and sites. The field data from four humic lakes suggested that water colour may have both direct and indirect effects on inter‐ and intra‐specific interactions of perch Perca fluviatilis and roach Rutilus rutilus. The results agree with suggestions that, compared with R. rutilus, P. fluviatilis may be an inferior forager on zooplankton in highly coloured water. As an indirect effect, water colour decreases the coverage of macrophytes and limits suitable littoral habitats, benefiting R. rutilus over P. fluviatilis. Perca fluviatilis benefiting from complex habitats does not have the advantage in macrophyte‐poor highly coloured water.  相似文献

The Roach Rutilus rutilus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Pisces: Teleostei) is a widespread Eurasian cyprinid freshwater fish. Although numerous studies have investigated the species’ life history traits across its main native range of distribution, little is known from water bodies located beyond the southern limits of the latter, especially where the species has been introduced. Between July 2010 and April 2011, a total of 949 R. rutilus specimens was collected from Porsuk Reservoir (NW Turkey), and life-history traits of age, growth, fecundity and egg size were studied and compared to six other R. rutilus populations (including Caspian Roach R. r. caspicus) from the southern limits of distribution. The Porsuk population was characterised by relatively shorter lifespan, slower growth and lower fecundity. These findings support previous studies emphasising the importance of local environmental factors in shaping the life-history traits of widespread fish species. These must be taken into consideration especially in view of the potential value of R. rutilus as an economic resource for in-land fisheries.  相似文献

This study evaluated a technique to allow the long‐term monitoring of individual fishes of known sex in the wild using sex confirmation in close proximity to the reproductive period combined with individual tagging. Hundreds of partially migratory roach Rutilus rutilus were tagged with passive integrated transponders (PIT) following sex determination in spring and various performance measures were compared with fish tagged outside the reproductive period in autumn. Short‐term survival was >95% for R. rutilus sexed and tagged under natural field conditions. Total length (LT) did not affect the probability of survival within the size range tagged (119–280 mm), nor were there differences in timing of migration the following season between individuals sexed and tagged in spring and individuals tagged in autumn (i.e. outside the reproductive period). Also, a similar per cent of R. rutilus sexed and tagged in spring and tagged in autumn migrated the following season (34·5 and 34·7%). Moreover, long‐term recapture data revealed no significant differences in body condition between R. rutilus individuals sexed and tagged in spring, individuals tagged in autumn and unmanipulated individuals. The observed sex ratio of recaptured fish did not differ from the expected values of equal recapture rates between males and females. Hence, there is no observable evidence for an adverse effect of tagging close to the reproductive period and therefore this method is suitable for studying intersexual differences and other phenotypic traits temporarily expressed during reproduction at the individual level in fishes.  相似文献

Mechanisms of hybridization between bream Abramis brama and roach Rutilus rutilus were studied within the native range of the species in a lake in southern Finland. Through the genetic analysis of A. brama, R. rutilus and putative hybrids, hybridization is shown to have occurred between female A. brama and male R. rutilus. These results match with previous findings from introduced habitats, suggesting that mating between female A. brama and male R. rutilus is the predominant mechanism through which the two species hybridize.  相似文献

Population densities of microtine rodents were studied along an air pollution gradient in the Kola Peninsula, Russia, by long-term and short-term trapping. The study area is affected by high sulphur dioxide and heavy metal emissions from the Severonikel copper-nickel smelter in Monchegorsk. The density of Clethrionomys rufocanus, the most abundant vole species in the area, was lowest close to the smelter and increased with distance up to the farthest, less polluted trapping sites. Clethrionomys glareolus, C. rutilus and Lemmus lemmus were absent from the most severely damaged area and were also scarce at the moderately polluted area 28 km south of the smelter. Although the population of C. glareolus has previously been cyclic at the moderately polluted area, we were unable to demonstrate any regular cycle. The most likely explanation for the low number of microtine rodents in the damaged and moderately polluted areas in a decrease in the quantity of important food plants: epiphytic lichens for C. glareolus and possibly C. rutilus, mosses for L. lemmus and seed plants, especially Vaccinium myrtillus, for C. rufocanus. Close to the smelter, direct toxic effects of heavy metals may also reduce population densities. The results show that pollutants may change the relative proportions of microtine species.  相似文献

Experiments carried out on underyearlings of four fish species—roach Rutilus rutilus, carp Cyprinus carpio, bream Abramis brama, and perch Perca fluviatilis—at illumination of 200–300 lx showed that the specimens with negative type of rheoreaction move downstream mainly (47–93%) in the active form, with their heads downstream, and rarer (3–37%) in the active-passive form, with their tails downstream. Increase of motivation for downstream movement caused by starvation leads to a higher part of fish with an active form of movement and to greater speed of movement of underyearlings. Active downstream movement is a manifestation of rheoreaction.  相似文献

Immediate mortality induced by electrofishing and handling of young‐of the‐year (YOY) fish of five cyprinid species (bitterling Rhodeus amarus, chub Leuciscus cephalus, bleak Alburnus alburnus, barbel Barbus barbus, roach Rutilus rutilus) was quantified during routine YOY fish monitoring (point abundance sampling with backpack electrofisher, in situ identification and measurement). Sampled, identified and measured fish were held in screened containers immersed in the river for 5 h after electrofishing. Bleak exhibited significantly higher mortality (17%) than all other species (1–3%). Mortality decreased significantly with fish length; fish <35 mm exhibited the highest mortality. Anode size (10, 20, and 30 cm diameter) had no direct effect on mortality. Point abundance electrofishing with in situ identification and measurement is a safe method for sampling riverine YOY cyprinids.  相似文献

In a four year experiment (1988–1991) carried out in a shallow, eutrophic lake, an increase in young-of-the-year pike (Esox lucius) density was used to control planktivorous fish assemblages consisting mainly of small-sized cyprinids: roach (Rutilus rutilus), Leucaspius delineatus, and white bream (Blicca bjoerkna). Stocking with pike fry of ca 30 mm in three successive springs resulted in large-scale mortality among prey of vulnerable sizes. Rotenone treatment at the end of the fourth year showed that roach and white bream populations contained few 0+ to 2+ fish, but very high numbers of 3+ to 6+ fish. By this time, short-lived, slow-growing L. delineatus, with no size refuge from predators, had been driven almost to extinction.  相似文献

Effects of temperature and group size of roach Rutilus rutilus on foraging behaviour of perch Perca fluviatilis and R. rutilus were tested in two laboratory experiments. A temperature experiment with P. fluviatilis and R. rutilus in aquaria (with either one P. fluviatilis or two R. rutilus) was tested at five temperatures: 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20° C, and showed that P. fluviatilis had a lower swimming speed and capture rate than R. rutilus, especially at 4 and 8° C. The effect of group size was tested at four R. rutilus abundances: 0, 2, 4 and 6, all at 16° C, and revealed that swimming speed and capture rate of P. fluviatilis were lowest at the highest R. rutilus abundance, whereas R. rutilus was relatively unaffected. Perca fluviatilis occupied positions closer to the bottom than R. rutilus, especially when feeding, and this tendency was reinforced at the highest roach abundance.  相似文献

The sinusoidal swimming of fish, previously interpreted as foraging behaviour, was studied with respect to season, density of large zooplankton, fish length, time of the day, weather condition and solar radiation in Římov Reservoir, Czech Republic, using a bottom-mounted, split-beam transducer (7°, nominal angle; frequency 120 kHz). The proportion of sinusoidally swimming fish increased from April to August while this behaviour was absent in October. The occurrence of sinusoidal swimming showed an apparent pattern throughout the day; it increased sharply around sunrise, was highest within 5–6 h around solar noon, and sharply decreased around sunset. Significantly less frequent occurrence of sinusoidal swimming was recorded during cloudy days compared to sunny days. The vast majority of records came from fish of standard length ranging from 100 to 400 mm, which represents the typical size range of common bream Abramis brama and roach Rutilus rutilus of age >1+, the main zooplanktivores in the reservoir. The presence of these larger fish in the open water of the reservoir, as well as the presence of sinusoidal swimming, apparently correlates with the presence of large zooplankton (Daphnia, Leptodora and Cyclops vicinus) in the epilimnion. The increase of sinusoidal swimming between April, June and finally August resulted in an increase of zooplankton component in fish guts. It appears that high values of solar radiation, and stable calm weather during high pressure periods, result in optimal optical conditions for sinusoidal swimming, making this foraging behaviour more efficient and widely used in fishes exploiting the zooplankton production in the reservoir.  相似文献

We analysed the spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton along a profile of 10 stations from the shore to the pelagic zone from April to September 1988, the period when the larvae and juveniles Rutilus rutilus, the most abundant species in the Lake, are in the littoral zone. The digestive tracts of the young roach were analysed. They fed essentially on rotifers and on cladocerans. For comparison, zooplankton was also analysed at one littoral area without fish fry. There was an increase of cladoceran density from the vegetated nearshore zone to the offshore zone. Considering the density of Bosmina longirostris, Daphnia longispina, Chydorus sphaericus and Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, we observed a different distribution pattern in the course of the year. In the nearshore zone, the relative abundance of small species, Bosmina and Chydorus, was much higher than that of the larger Daphnia. From April to September, predation pressure mainly affected the smallest species: in contrast to the inshore station without fish fry, the density of Bosmina decreased in May in the littoral with fish. Chydorus was concentrated in the littoral between February and April, then grew into the pelagic zone, where predation pressure obviously was low during the warm season. The number of Daphnia, which was eaten by the fish fry at any time, remained low in the nearshore zone, which suggests that the presence of fish may cause Daphnia to avoid this zone. Ceriodaphnia which was not affected by this predation, was scarce in the nearshore zone during mid-summer. The low density of the cladocerans in the nearshore zone is likely associated with vertebrate predation by roach fry and juveniles, the result of such a process being either a depletion in density of the prey, or an avoidance behaviour.  相似文献

The feeding rate of perch Perca fluviatilis showed high individual variation at low and moderate turbidities, when one individual had consumed more Daphnia pulex than any other fish, whereas no such variation in feeding efficiency was observed with roach Rutilus rutilus. There was a significant decrease in total consumption of D. pulex by P. fluviatilis with increasing turbidity, but no correlation was observed in the case of R. rutilus. The results suggest that the difference in the ontogeny of P. fluviatilis and R. rutilus may be detectable as behaviour‐related species‐specific trait differences in the early planktivorous feeding stage of the two common species.  相似文献

The ontogeny of the larvae and juveniles of the common roach, Rutilus rutilus, was accelerated and retarded via treatment with the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3), and thiourea. This treatment resulted in differential timing of scale formation. Development of squamation was earlier in accelerated fish but delayed in retarded fish compared with a control fish. A drastic shift in the number of lateral line scales (LL) resulted. Instead of a typical range of LL, retarded fish had an increased LL compared to the control as well as for the species as a whole, 47–71 vs 41–48, while accelerated fish had reduced LL: 38–44 vs 41–48. The mechanism of this drastic change in LL was related to developmental change in the timing of events, leading to changes in size and shape (heterochrony). The number of scales obtained experimentally was correlated to the body length at which scales first appeared.  相似文献

Priest Pot is a shallow hypereutrophic tarn that supports large numbers of rotifers and young roach (Rutilus rutilus (L).). In this paper we describe the planktonic rotifer community of the tarn and show that the young roach feed extensively on Keratella cochlearis. A two year study of the population dynamics of K. cochlearis, nevertheless, failed to detect any obvious demographic effects of roach predation. Some general comparisons of fish biomass and rotifer production suggest that the fish are unlikely to influence the development of their rotifer prey in such a productive system.  相似文献
