Inbreeding depression has been documented in many insect species, but the degree to which it varies among traits within populations and among populations within species is poorly understood. We used a single‐generation factorial breeding design to examine variation in inbreeding depression among three populations of the seed‐feeding beetle, Stator limbatus Horn (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae), from the southwestern USA. Eggs from sib matings were less likely to develop and hatch, and larval hatch‐to‐adult mortality was higher for offspring of sib matings. Overall, inbreeding resulted in a reduction in the proportion of eggs that produced an adult from >80% for outbred matings in all three populations to an average of only 54% for inbred matings. Of those larvae that survived to adult, inbred beetles took ~1.5 days (>5%) longer to reach adult. The only measured trait not affected by inbreeding was adult body mass. The degree to which inbreeding increased mortality varied among the populations – inbreeding depression was lowest in the population that is most isolated. Although populations of S. limbatus are generally large in nature our results suggest that increased inbreeding associated with population fragmentation can have substantial effects on fitness of S. limbatus.  相似文献

1. Although numerous studies have examined the ecology of plant resistance to herbivores and the distribution of herbivores within plant hybrid zones, few have examined how plant hybridization influences herbivore growth, development, or life history. The experiment reported here examines variation in survivorship, development time, and final adult body size of Stator limbatus reared on seeds of parental and hybrid Cercidium floridum-×-C. microphyllum trees from a paloverde hybrid zone in eastern California. Because S. limbatus exhibits egg size plasticity in response to host species, the size of eggs that females lay on hybrid and parental plants is also examined. 2. The hypotheses (a) that seeds of hybrid trees are intermediate between those of the two parental species in their resistance to penetration by S. limbatus larvae; (b) that seeds of hybrid trees are intermediate in their suitability for the growth of larvae that successfully penetrate the seed-coat; (c) that female S. limbatus can distinguish between hybrid trees and pure-bred trees, as quantified by the size of eggs they lay on seeds of each taxon, and (d) that female S. limbatus can distinguish among individual hybrid trees, are tested. 3. On average, S. limbatus survivorship was lower, development time longer, and emergence body mass lower on seeds of C. floridum than on seeds of C. microphyllum. Seeds of hybrid trees were, on average (across trees), intermediate between seeds of the parental species in the resistance of their seed-coats to penetration by S. limbatus larvae and in their suitability for larval growth. Individual hybrid trees also varied in the resistance of their seeds to, and the suitability of their seeds for, S. limbatus larvae. 4. Female S. limbatus laid significantly larger eggs on seeds of C. floridum than on seeds of C. microphyllum, and, on average, intermediate size eggs on hybrid trees. The size of eggs laid by females also varied among hybrid trees, with females laying C. floridum-sized eggs on some trees, and C. microphyllum-sized eggs on other trees. These results suggest that females have at least some ability to distinguish among hybrid trees, but there was no evidence that females laid larger eggs on poorer quality hybrid trees.  相似文献

Interspecies hybridisation in nature is a well-studied phenomenon, but it has not been analysed using genetic markers in the class Chondrichthyes (sharks, rays and chimeras). Two black-tip whaler shark species (Australian, Carcharhinus tilstoni; Common, C. limbatus) have overlapping distributions in Australia, distinct mitochondrial DNA sequence (ND4, COI, control region) and distinct morphological features such as length at sexual maturity, length at birth and number of vertebrae. A mismatch was observed between species identification using mtDNA sequence and species identification using morphological characters. To test whether hybridisation between the two species was responsible, a nuclear gene with species-specific mutations was sequenced. Extensive interspecies hybridisation was found to be occurring. Hybrids were found from five locations on the eastern Australian coastline, spanning 2,000 km. If hybrid fitness is low and hybrids are common, then fisheries recruitment may be overestimated and the productivity of the black-tip shark fishery may be well below that required to support commercial exploitation. To guard against identification errors, the likelihood of hybridisation and subsequent introgression should be assessed prior to using mtDNA (e.g. barcoding) to identify shark species. The C. limbatusC. tilstoni species complex provides a unique opportunity to investigate the ability of sharks to adapt to environmental change, in particular, the impact of hybridization on species distributions which favour C. tilstoni along the north and C. limbatus along the south eastern Australian coastline.  相似文献

We tagged 12 Carcharhinus limbatus with acoustic transmitters and monitored their presence at five piers along the north-east coast of South Carolina, USA in 2016 and four piers in 2017 using acoustic receivers. Data were analysed with pier association indices (PAI), mixed models and fast Fourier transformation analyses to identify potential factors related to residence time and presence at piers and any cyclical patterns in visits to piers. While the majority of monitored C. limbatus were infrequently detected at piers, three (25.0%) were highly associated with piers (PAI ≥ 0.50). Of the C. limbatus that were detected after initial capture, three (25.0%) recorded detection events only at the pier where they were tagged and two individuals (16.7%) recorded at least one detection event at all monitored piers. The best-fit model explaining C. limbatus residence time at piers included terms for pier location and diel cycle (wi = 0.88), whereas the best fit model explaining presence–absence of C. limbatus at piers included terms for tidal height, diel cycle, barometric pressure and angler count (wi = 0.98). Carcharhinus limbatus did not appear to display cyclical patterns in their visits to piers. Along the north-east coast of South Carolina, association of C. limbatus with piers is a phenomenon for a proportion of mature individuals, but continued research is necessary to understand if this behaviour is driven by attraction to and feeding on angler discards or increased foraging opportunities resulting from the attraction of potential prey to the physical structure provided by piers.  相似文献

We performed laboratory experiments to investigate the effects of predator avoidance and numerical effects of predation on spatial distribution of small Saduria entomon (Isopoda) and Monoporeia affinis (Amphipoda), with large S. entomon as predators. The horizontal distribution and mortality of the prey species, separately and together, were studied in aquaria with a spatial horizontal refuge. We also estimated effects of refuge on mortality of small S. entomon and M. affinis by experiments without the refuge net. In addition, we investigated whether predation risk from large S. entomon influenced the swimming activity of M. affinis, to clarify the mechanisms behind the spatial distribution. Both small S. entomon and M. affinis avoided large S. entomon. The avoidance behaviour of M. fffinis contributed about 10 times more to the high proportion in the refuge than numerical effects of predation. Due to the low mortality of small S. entomon the avoidance behaviour of this species was even more important for the spatial distribution. The combined effect of avoidance behaviour and predation in both species was aggregation, producting a positive correlation between the species in density. M. affinis showed two types of avoidance behaviour. In the activity experiments they reduced activity by 36% and buried themselves in the sediment. In the refuge experiments we also observed avoidance behaviour with the emigration rate from the predator compartment being twice the immigration rate. The refuge did not lower predation mortality in M. affinis, probably due to the small scale of the experimental units in relation to the mobility of the species. Predation mortality in small S. entomon was higher in absence of a refuge and especially high in absence of M. affinis.  相似文献

It is well known that a predator has the potential to regulate a prey population only if the predator responds to increases in prey density and inflicts greater mortality rates. Predators may cause such density-dependent mortality depending on the nature of the functional and numerical responses. Yet, few studies have examined the relationship between the addition of refuges and the characteristic of functional response fits. We investigated whether addition of a refuge changed the type of functional response exhibited by Dermestes ater on Musca domestica, comparing the inherent ability of D. ater to kill houseflies in the absence and in the presence of refuge. An additional laboratory experiment was also carried out to assess handling and searching times exhibited by D. ater. Logistic regression analyses revealed a type III functional response for predator–prey interaction without refuge, and results were described by the random predator equation. The mean number of prey killed did not differ between experimental habitats, indicating that the addition of refuge did not inhibit predation. However, predators that interacted with prey without refuge spent less time searching for prey at higher densities, increasing predatory interaction. We concluded that this interaction may be weak, because data from experiments with refuge fitted poorly to models. However, the high variability and the nonsignificance of the data from the experiment with refuge show the importance of refuge for promoting spatial heterogeneity, which may prevent prey extinction.  相似文献

Notonectids are well‐known predators in aquatic habitats, where mosquito larvae, chironomids, and cladocerans constitute their main diet. Our purpose was to assess the effect of structural complexity on the predatory ability of Buenoa fuscipennis, a common predator in aquatic habitats of Buenos Aires city (Argentina). Buenoa fuscipennis showed type 2 functional responses in both the presence and absence of prey refuge and no differences in attack rate or handling time between refuge treatments. Regarding mosquito size classes, B. fuscipennis exhibited a significantly higher preference for 2nd instar larvae and no predation on pupae. In the presence of mosquito larvae and alternative prey, B. fuscipennis preferred mosquitoes over chironomid larvae and adult cladocerans over mosquito larvae. No switching behavior was detected in our experiments. Habitat structure only slightly affected the predator´s consumption rates on mosquito larvae. Overall, preference for prey did not vary with the presence of refuge, except for the preference for mosquitoes over chironomid larvae, which was significantly decreased in the presence of refuge as a consequence of reduced predation on mosquito larvae. The results suggest that B. fuscipennis could efficiently control mosquitoes in structurally simple habitats where chironomids are the most abundant alternative prey but not in temporary pools where cladocerans are abundant.  相似文献

Seed beetles (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) lay their eggs on discrete resource patches, such that competition among larvae for food is an important component of their biology. Most seed beetles, including Stator limbatus, lay eggs singly on individual seeds and avoid superparasitism except when seeds are limiting. In contrast, S. beali, a closely related congener, lays eggs in clutches on a single seed. We tested the hypothesis that natural selection on larval life history characters favors small clutches (selection against large clutches) in S. limbatus, but that selection against large clutches is relaxed in S. beali because of the large size of its host's seeds. We manipulated clutch size and examined its relationship to offspring fitness. Clutch size affected the survivorship of S. limbatus larvae(r 2=0.14), but had no detectable effect on the survivorship of S. beali larvae (r 2=0.04). Also, clutch size had a large effect on development time and body weight of S. limbatus, but not of S. beali. We discuss the implications of this result for the evolution of clutch size in S. limbatus and S. beali.  相似文献

Multivariate and machine‐learning methods were used to develop field identification techniques for two species of cryptic blacktip shark. From 112 specimens, precaudal vertebrae (PCV) counts and molecular analysis identified 95 Australian blacktip sharks Carcharhinus tilstoni and 17 common blacktip sharks Carcharhinus limbatus. Molecular analysis also revealed 27 of the 112 were C. tilstoni × C. limbatus hybrids, of which 23 had C. tilstoni PCV counts and four had C. limbatus PCV counts. In the absence of further information about hybrid phenotypes, hybrids were assigned as either C. limbatus or C. tilstoni based on PCV counts. Discriminant analysis achieved 80% successful identification, but machine‐learning models were better, achieving 100% successful identification, using six key measurements (fork length, caudal‐fin peduncle height, interdorsal space, second dorsal‐fin height, pelvic‐fin length and pelvic‐fin midpoint to first dorsal‐fin insertion). Furthermore, pelvic‐fin markings could be used for identification: C. limbatus has a distinct black mark >3% of the total pelvic‐fin area, while C. tilstoni has markings with diffuse edges, or has smaller or no markings. Machine learning and pelvic‐fin marking identification methods were field tested achieving 87 and 90% successful identification, respectively. With further refinement, the techniques developed here will form an important part of a multi‐faceted approach to identification of C. tilstoni and C. limbatus and have a clear management and conservation application to these commercially important sharks. The methods developed here are broadly applicable and can be used to resolve species identities in many fisheries where cryptic species exist.  相似文献

By experimentally manipulating predation risk and food availability, we explored the effects of these factors on refuge use, general activity, feeding activity, and mating activity of adults of the pond water strider Gerris marginatus. Predation risk (from adult backswimmers Notonecta undulata) profoundly influenced the behavior of G. marginatus, reducing mating activity, general activity in males and females, decreasing feeding activity in females and increasing the use of refuge by both sexes. Surprisingly, variations in food availability failed to produce significant effects on any of these behavior patterns. Risk x food interactions were also not statistically significant for any gerrid behavior. The significant responses to predators all changed in directions that should decrease the risk of predation for G. marginatus.  相似文献

Summary Experiments were conducted with the sexually reproducing seed beetle Stator limbatus and its hosts in north-central Arizona to determine if it was substructured into units, each specialized for higher fitness on a specific host species. Unlike many studies, we incorporated scale, i.e., conducting experiments between and within beetle populations on seeds from within and between plant species. Of particular interest was whether intraspecific plant variability prevented beetle specialization within beetle populations. Results suggest that S. limbatus is specialized to certain hosts. On the palo verde Cercidium floridum, beetles originally reared from this host had significantly higher emergence compared to beetles transferred from other hosts. We did not test directly for a genetic basis for this. Alternative hypotheses of variation in symbiotic microorganisms in larval guts and maternal effects were assessed. Essentially no bacteria, yeast or protozoa were found, and maternal effects as expressed by varying egg weights were not detected; however, other microorganisms might have been present and maternal effects through inducible enzymes was possible. Caution, then, is needed in any genetic interpretations of our results. The differences on C. floridum were detected from tests between and within beetle populations. Evidence for specialization was not detected on the other hosts, Cercidium microphyllum and Acacia greggii. On the other hosts, beetles performed well regardless of their source. Significant differences were detected among individual plants of C. floridum as to the suitability of their seeds for deveoopment of S. limbatus. No such differences were detected among the other host plants. These patterns of conspecific plant variability are opposite of what is expected if plant variability prevents specialization of beetles to particular species of hosts. Thus, the data suggest seed variability among plants does not prevent specialization to host species in this system. We discuss how the patterns of host use in this study relate to the hypothesis of sympatric host race formation.  相似文献

In a primary forest on the Central Plateau of MadagascarPlectranthus vestitus (Lamiaceae) was principally pollinated by the beePachymelus limbatus (Hymenoptera, Anthophoridae). A species ofStylogaster (Diptera, Conopidae) acted as a co-pollinator. Flower — pollinator interactions are described. The bee performed pollination while hovering, a flower-visit lasting onlyc. 0.3 seconds. Floral features such as shape and size of the corolla tube, and the lack of a landing place suggest specialization to hovering anthophorid beepollinators. Floral biology and pollination in the genusPlectranthus are discussed.  相似文献

The success of the current resistance management plan for transgenic maize, Zea mays L. (Poaceae), targeting the rootworm complex hinges upon high rates of mating between resistant and susceptible beetles. However, differences in the fitness of adult beetles could result in assortative mating, which could, in turn, change the rate of resistance evolution. Adult head capsule widths of naturally occurring populations of western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), were examined in a variety of refuge configurations. Beetles were classified into treatments based on the hybrid – non‐Bt refuge or Bt maize targeting larval rootworms (hereafter BtRW maize) – and location – proximity to other Bt‐RW or refuge plants – of the natal host plant. Treatments included the following: a refuge plant surrounded by other refuge plants, a refuge plant located near a BtRW plant, a BtRW plant surrounded by BtRW plants, and a BtRW plant located near a refuge plant. The mean head capsule width of males emerging from BtRW plants was significantly smaller than the mean head capsule width of males emerging from refuge plants. These results indicate that males emerging from BtRW maize plants may be exposed to sublethal doses of the Bt toxin as larvae. No differences were detected between females emerging from refuge plants compared with Bt‐RW plants. Overall mean head capsule width decreased as the season progressed, regardless of treatment. The diminished head capsule width of western corn rootworm males emerging from Bt‐RW maize may act to enhance resistance management, particularly in a seed mix refuge system.  相似文献

1. The effects of addition of juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis) on the microcrustacean and rotifer communities associated with nymphaeid beds were studied, at three different plant densities [high (normal), medium (reduced by a half) and low (reduced to a third of normal)], in eighteen 2 m × 1 m enclosures in a shallow lake. 2. At the low and medium densities of lilies, Daphnia densities were high in the absence of perch but very low in the presence of perch. They increased, even in the presence of perch, to high densities (comparable with those in the absence of perch) at the highest plant density. Body sizes of Daphnia hyalina were consistent with high predation by perch at low and medium plant densities but reduced predation at high plant densities. Patterns of chlorophyll a concentration, in the presence of perch, inversely reflected those of D. hyalina density. 3. At naturally high densities but not at reduced densities, the plants appeared to act as refuges against predation for the Daphnia. Reductions in oxygen concentrations in the plant beds were not responsible for the refuge effect, nor could there be avoidance of the beds by the fish. The mechanism of the refuge effect must therefore lie in frustration of the process of capture of the Daphnia by the fish. 4. Numbers of other small Crustacea and rotifers were mostly unaffected by fish predation. Numbers of Asplanchna sp., Chydorus sphaericus and copepodites were higher in the presence of fish and, although there was no main effect of fish on numbers of Diaphanosoma brachyurum, there was a plant–fish interaction, with this species being less abundant in the presence of fish at low plant densities but more abundant in the presence of fish at medium and high plant densities. Main effects of plants were few, with only Asplanchna sp. and Keratella sp. decreasing in numbers with increasing plant density. Most taxa changed in numbers with time but interaction effects between time and plants, and fish and plants, were few.  相似文献

The diets of six shark species, Sphyrna lewini, Sphyrna zygaena, Carcharhinus obscurus, Carcharhinus limbatus, Rhizoprionodon lalandii and Galeocerdo cuvier, were investigated in a subtropical coastal ecosystem of southern Brazil. Stomach content data were obtained to assess foraging niche segregation and ontogenetic shifts in the diets of these sharks. Five of the shark species off the Paraná coast were ichthyophagous, with the exception of S. zygaena, which was teutophagous. With the exception of G. cuvier, which had a generalist diet, the other five species displayed specialization in their feeding. Ontogenetic shifts were observed in C. obscurus and S. lewini with large individuals consuming elasmobranchs. Owing to the diet overlap between C. obscurus and S. lewini, C. obscurus and C. limbatus and R. lalandii and C. limbatus, future studies on the spatial and temporal distributions of these species are needed to understand the extent of competitive interactions.  相似文献

The western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is the most significant pest of field maize, Zea mays L. (Poaceae), in the USA. Maize plants expressing Bt toxins targeting the corn rootworm complex have been widely adopted and are the primary insecticidal control measure for this pest in North America. Insect resistance management tactics using various refuge structures have been adopted to ensure Bt products will retain durability. An assumption of the refuge strategy is that males and females emerging from Bt and refuge plantings mate randomly; this has not been tested in the field. We conducted cage studies using field populations of WCR in Indiana, USA, to generate empirical field data on mating rates between beetles emerging from Cry3Bb1‐expressing Bt and refuge maize plants. Two refuge configurations were tested; all refuge plants were labeled using the stable isotope 15N. This mark persists in adult beetles after eclosion, allowing for collection and analysis of isotopic ratios of all beetles. Additional data collected included adult emergence rates, timing and sex ratios for each of the treatments, and head capsule size and dry weights of beetles collected. Treatment had a significant effect on dry weight; mean dry weight decreased in Bt‐only treatments. Fisher's exact test of proportions of mating pairs of refuge and Bt insects indicated that mating was not random in 20% strip refuges and 5% seed blend treatments. We found high percentages of beetles that fed on Bt‐expressing plants as larvae, suggesting that mating between resistant beetles may not be rare even if random mating did occur.  相似文献

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation created a shallow, 110-m channel to provide habitat for two endangered fishes, Cyprinodon elegans (Comanche Springs pupfish) and Gambusia nobilis (Pecos gambusia), at the site of the fishes' former natural habitat. The ciénega (marsh) associated with Phantom Lake Spring in Jeff Davis County, Texas, was destroyed by the creation of an irrigation canal system. In 1993, the endangered fishes were stocked into the refuge with individuals from the irrigation canals, and in the case of C. elegans, hatchery stocks. The condition of habitat, status of fish populations, and fish ecology within the refuge were then monitored for two years. The abundance and density of both species increased in accordance with aquatic plant development. Cyprinodon elegans abundance peaked after one year and stabilized at an average density of 14.7/m2 by the end of our study. Juvenile C. elegans were always rare, which may indicate that the population reached the refuge's carrying capacity and that recruitment is low. Gambusia nobilis was the most abundant fish in the refuge (average density 96/m2), used the entire refuge, and outcom-peted nonindigenous G. geiseri. The two Gambusia species used similar habitats but showed almost no dietary overlap. High densities of aquatic plants reduced the amount of open water areas necessary for C. elegans. The refuge will sustain the two endangered fishes at this historic site of endemism while maintaining flow to the irrigation system; however, the refuge is not equivalent to a restored ciénega.  相似文献

1. Different behavioural responses of planktonic animals to their main predators, fish, have been reported from shallow lakes. In north temperate lakes, large‐bodied zooplankton may seek refuge from predation among macrophytes, whereas in subtropical lakes, avoidance of macrophytes has been observed. The prevalent behaviour probably depends on the characteristics of the fish community, which in Mediterranean lakes is typically dispersed in both the open water zone and in the littoral, as in temperate lakes, and is dominated by small size classes, as in subtropical lakes. 2. We performed ‘habitat choice’ experiments to test the response of Daphnia magna to predation cues at both the horizontal and vertical level by mimicking a ‘shallow littoral’ zone with plants and a ‘deeper pelagic’ zone with sediments. 3. Initial separate response experiments showed that natural plants, artificial plants and predation cues all repelled D. magna in the absence of other stimuli, while sediments alone did not trigger any significant response by D. magna. 4. The habitat choice experiments showed that, in the presence of predation cues and absence of plants, Daphnia moved towards areas with sediment. In the presence of both plants and sediments, Daphnia moved away from the plants towards the sediments under both shallow and deep water treatment conditions. 5. Based on these results, we suggest that Daphnia in Mediterranean shallow lakes avoid submerged macrophytes and instead prefer to hide near the sediment when exposed to predation risk, as also observed in subtropical shallow lakes. This pattern is not likely to change with water level alterations, a common feature of lakes in the region, even if the effectiveness of the refuge may be reduced.  相似文献
