The influence of calcium nutrition on ethylene-induced abscission was studied by growing cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cv. Stoneville 213) and bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Resistant Black Valentine) plants for several weeks in nutrient solutions containing 2, 10 (normal level), 15, or 20 meq/l of calcium, and then treating the plants with ethylene. Increasing the calcium level of cotton from 2 to 20 meq/l resulted in a 9-fold increase in the calcium content of the abscission zone and a maximum reduction of 25% in the amount of leaf abscission induced by ethylene (9 μl/l). Bean plants grown on 10, 15, or 20 meq/l calcium solutions showed corresponding increases in the calcium content of the abscission zone but showed no significant differences in the rate of ethyleneinduced abscission. Only at the lowest calcium level of 2 meq/l, where deficiency symptoms became apparent, was a significant effect observed. These results suggest that under normal cultural practices calcium nutrition has little influence on the rate of ethylene-induced abscission.  相似文献

Soluble and insoluble oxalate and insoluble calcium were measured in the leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris. The plants were grown in nutrient solutions with two different concentrations of calcium. Two developmental stages of the leaves were studied. Although the content of insoluble calcium differs widely according to leaf age and growth conditions, the percentage bound in crystals is nearly the same in all cases. In the growing leaves, concentrations of total oxalate are independent of calcium supply, thus, showing that the known rise in numbers of crystals, and of cells containing them, is not induced via oxalate biosynthesis. Fully expanded leaves contain more oxalate when grown in a nutrient solution with higher calcium concentration. Amounts of oxalate in percent of dry weight are similar to those given in the literature for other legume leaves.  相似文献

Summary Three tomato varieties, Amberley Cross, VF-145 and VF-13L (the last two reported to show K-deficiency symptoms independent of the amount of K applied) were grown in sand with three concentrations of applied nutrient K at a constant high level of Ca. There was a varietal difference in the K concentration and total K uptake into the plants. The Mg concentrations in the fruit were unaffected by K nutrition but the concentrations fell in the leaves of all varieties when the nutrient K was increased above 0.28 meq/l.While the concentration of Ca in the leaves of Amberley Cross was not significantly reduced by raising the concentration of K in the nutrient feed, there was a reduction in the varieties VF-145 and VF-13L. Maximum concentrations of Ca were present in fruit of all varieties receiving 2 meq K+/l, and that present in fruit of Amberley Cross was significantly higher than in fruit from either VF-145 or VF-13L. Comparing the varieties in the 10.2 meq K+/l treatment, fruit of VF-13L contained the lowest concentration and total amount of Ca, and had the highest incidence of blossom-end rot. VF-13L was the most susceptible to blossom-end rot, particularly in the highest K treatment, while Amberley Cross was the only variety free of symptoms in all three nutrient treatments.  相似文献

This study was to report and describe the formation of Ca oxalate crystals and to explore whether there is any correlation between their abundant formation and the ability of plant to uptake and accumulate high levels of toxic metals. Soil-grown Corchorus olitorius L. (Tiliaceae) seedlings were further grown in water culture in the presence of Cd, Pb, Cu, or Al (0–10 g/ml) for 20 days. Light and electron microscopic examinations revealed a large number of intracellular prismatic-shaped Ca oxalate crystals in both leaf and callus cells. Crystals were formed in the vacuole, a single large crystal being formed per cell. The crystal-containing cells differed in size and shape from crystal-free cells, they were rich in organelles, membranes, and vesicles and have dense cytoplasm, enlarged nucleus and modified starch-lacking plastids with few grana. These cells look highly active. Corchorus plants treated with Cd, Pb, Cu, and Al accumulated these metals to the levels several times higher than untreated plants. The contents of Pb, Cd, Al, and Cu in leaf tissues of plants grown in the presence of 5 g/ml of these metals were 10, 20, 25, and 40 times higher, respectively, than those in plants grown on media devoid of them. X-ray microanalysis of Ca oxalate crystals in leaves from plants exposed to 5 g/ml Cd, Pb, Al, or Cu indicated the incorporation only of Al into these crystals. Results of this paper suggest a possible contribution for Ca oxalate-crystal formation in sequestering and tolerance of at least some toxic metals.  相似文献

随着全球气候变化加重,干旱强度和持续时间逐渐增加,严重影响植物生长和作物产量。喀斯特为典型的干旱和高钙生境,植物叶片富集大量的草酸钙晶体,而该晶体与植物耐旱性之间的关系并不清楚。该研究以喀斯特适生植物堇菜(Viola verecumda)为材料,土壤进行自然干旱,分析堇菜叶片的草酸钙晶体变化特征与水分之间的关系。结果表明:在土壤自然干旱条件下,堇菜主要通过细胞内束缚水的释放,维持细胞内水分平衡;而在干旱后期,叶片通过关闭气孔,将部分自由水转变为束缚水,防止水分流失。此外,草酸钙晶体的密度与束缚水含量具有极其显著的强正相关线性回归关系(r=0.825 3,P0.000 1),表明草酸钙晶体作为主要的束缚水物质。因此,堇菜植物在耐旱过程中可能协调草酸钙晶体和气孔的生理行为忍耐干旱胁迫。  相似文献

Summary The effect of level of CaCO3, inoculation and lime pelleting on the nodulation, dry matter yield and % N content of common bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) grown in five acid soils was investigated in a greenhouse study. The soils represented a range in pH from 3.9 to 5.1, in exchangeable Al from 0.0 to 4 meq/100 gm, in exchangeable Mn from 0.35 to 2.32 me/100 gm, and in %C from 0.69 to 5.60.Nodule weight decreased with increasing %C and for the soil with highest %C (5.60) no nodules were observed. In soils with low organic matter and low exchangeable Al and Mn, inoculation increased nodule weight, dry matter yield and %N especially at the lowest pH level. Where the seeds were not inoculated, nodule weight and dry matter yield increased with soil pH. No such increases were observed where the seeds were inoculated. There was no apparent advantage in lime pelleting in such soils.In soils with low organic matter content and with substantial amounts of Al and/or Mn, liming increased nodule weight and dry matter yield, and decreased exchangeable Al and/or Mn. Lime pelleting was superior to mere inoculation in increasing nodule weight particularly at low lime rates.In soils with relatively high organic matter content, nodulation was very low or none at all. Low lime rates had little effect on exchangeable Al and Ca and dry matter yield. Higher lime rates, however, decreased exchangeable Al and dry matter yield but increased exchangeable Ca.  相似文献

Young plants of Phaseolus vulgaris were grown in nutrient solutions at different levels of calcium concentration. When the calcium concentration was low more palisade parenchyma and less extended bundle sheath was formed at the adaxial side of minor veins of the leaves as compared to leaves of plants grown with higher calcium supply. The number of calcium oxalate crystals in the bundle sheath extensions was positively correlated to the amount of calcium fed to the plants. The ion induces additional cell divisions in the bundle sheath extensions. A high supply of calcium leads to the formation of a second type of crystal in the bundle sheath.  相似文献

Summary Soybeans (Glycine max L. var. Williams) were grown for six weeks in a greenhouse in quartz sand containing 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 or 8% (w/w) sterilized peat moss. The cation exchange capacities of the organic matter-sand (OM-S) mixtures ranged from 0.01 to 8.88 meq/100 g dry weight. Imposed on each OM-S mixture was a treatment of 0, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 or 20.0 ppm Cd applied as CdCl2·21/2H2O. Height growth was measured weekly and at harvest plants were separated into leaves, stems and roots for dry weight and tissue Cd determinations. For plants grown in sand alone, height growth and dry matter accumulation in all tissues were reduced and Cd content was increased. These effects were correlated with increasing Cd concentration in the rooting medium. Inhibitions in growth by Cd were reduced by addition of organic matter; the amount of alleviation was dependent on both the level of organic matter and the cadmium treatment. In the 0, 0.5 and 1% OM-S mixtures, Cd content in the various tissues was correlated with metal treatment. Tissue levels were markedly reduced for Cd treatments in the 2, 4 and 8% OM-S mixtures, although there was a positive correlation between tissue Cd and the 1.25 and 2.5 Cd treatments. Oxalate‐producing plants accumulate calcium oxalate crystals (CaOx(c)) in the range of 3–80% w/w of their dry weight, reducing calcium (Ca) bioavailability. The calcium oxalate deficient 5 (cod5) mutant of Medicago truncatula has been previously shown to contain similar Ca concentrations to wild‐type (WT) plants, but lower oxalate and CaOx(c) concentrations. We imaged the Ca distribution in WT and cod5 leaflets via synchrotron X–ray fluorescence mapping (SXRF). We observed a difference in the Ca distribution between cod5 and WT leaflets, manifested as an abundance of Ca in the interveinal areas and a lack of Ca along the secondary veins in cod5, i.e. the opposite of what is observed in WT. X–ray microdiffraction (μXRD) of M. truncatula leaves confirmed that crystalline CaOx(c) (whewellite; CaC2O4·H2O) was present in the WT only, in cells sheathing the secondary veins. Together with μXRD, microbeam Ca K–edge X–ray absorption near‐edge structure spectroscopy (μXANES) indicated that, among the forms of CaOx, i.e. crystalline or amorphous, only amorphous CaOx was present in cod5. These results demonstrate that deletion of COD5 changes both Ca localization and the form of CaOx within leaflets.  相似文献

Resume Les auteurs étudient chez la tomate l'influence de la concentration saline et du rapport Na/Ca du milieu nutritif sur le développement de la fusariose vasculaire. A concentration saline élevée (50,4 meq/l), les plantes fanent tardivement mais brusquement et sans jaunissement préalable. La colonisation des tiges parF. oxysporum f. sp.lycopersici est tardive et faible; cependant à rapport Na/Ca élevé, elle augmente rapidement. Il n'y a pas d'acides aminés détectables dans la sève des plantes de 14 jours mais la teneur en N inorganique est toujours supérieure à 2.8 μg/ml. A concentration saline faible (2.5 meq/l), les feuilles jaunissent progressivement et précocement. La colonisation du xylème est précoce et dense; l'influence du rapport Na/Ca est faible. Les acides aminés sont présents dans la sève en quantités relativement importantes et d'autant plus que le Na/Ca cro?t. Ces résultats de l'évolution de la maladie sont discutés en relation avec la composition chimique des tissus et de la sève et la localisation histochimique du Na et du Ca.
Summary The influence of the salt concentration and of the Na/Ca ratio of the nutrient solution on the development of the fusarial wilt of the tomato has been studied. At high salt concentration (50.4 meq/l), plants wilt lately but suddenly without yellowing. The stem colonization byF. oxysporum f. sp.lycopersici is poor and late; however at higher Na/Ca it increases rapidly. There are no amino acids detectable in xylem sap of 14 days old plants but the content of inorganic N is always higher than 2.8μg/ml. At low salt concentration (2.5 meq/l), the yellowing of the leaves begins early and progressively. The xylem colonization by the parasite is dense and precocious; the influence of the Na/Ca is weak. The amino-acids are relatively abundant in xylem sap and their content increases with the increase of the Na/Ca ratio. These results of the development of the disease are discussed in relation to the chemical composition of the tissues and the xylem sap and the histochemical localization of Na and Ca.

In a greenhouse study, increases in dry weight and N, P, K, Ca, and Mg content of seedlings from a preplanting application of 0.16 meq K/100 g of Caddo silt loam topsoil were markedly greater on soil containing 0.06 meq K, than on soil containing 0.09 meq K/100 g. Except for further increasing K and reducing Ca content of seedlings, applications of 0.32 and 0.48 meq K/100 g added little to growth or nutrient accumulation. Additions of 1 to 5 meq Ca/100 g either did not affect or slightly reduce dry weight and uptake of all nutrients except Ca. Potassium and calcium treatments did not interact to influence growth or nutrient uptake. Dry weight and accumulation of N, P, and K were all associated with the amount of K available; Ca accumulation was related only to available Ca.  相似文献

Summary Tomato plants were grown in water-culture with a different supply of Ca (10, 100 ppm) and B (0, 0.2 ppm), and the effects of B deficiency on the translocation and subcellular distribution of Ca in tomato plants were studied by using45CaCl2 as a carrier of Ca. Boron deficiency slight increased the total Ca uptake by the plant and inhibited the Ca translocation to the upper leaves. The incorporation of45Ca into the cell wall in the upper leaves was increased by B deficiency at both Ca levels. As Ca supply decreased, the distribution of45Ca in the 1N NaCl fraction of the cell wall increased only at 0.2 ppm B. As B supply decreased, the distribution of45Ca in the 0.6N HCl fraction increased at both Ca levels. These results suggest that B deficiency inhibit the translocation of Ca, and induce the abnormal changes of the Ca metabolism in the cell wall.  相似文献

为了探究喀斯特地区野生毛葡萄(Vitis quinquangularis Rehd.)器官的钙含量、组分及其分布特征,揭示野生毛葡萄的需钙特性及其对高钙土壤的适应机制。该研究以贵州喀斯特地区野生毛葡萄为材料,取样测定了40个样地的野生毛葡萄立地土壤的pH值、交换性钙含量及其根、茎、叶中钙和镁及其钙组分含量,分析土壤交换性钙含量与不同钙组分间的关系,并观察野生毛葡萄叶片表面及根、茎、叶中的钙晶体。结果表明:(1)喀斯特地区野生毛葡萄总钙含量在器官中的分布表现为叶>根>茎,其分布特征与喜钙植物类似。(2)野生毛葡萄根、茎、叶中主要钙组分含量由高到低依次基本为草酸钙、果胶酸钙、水溶性钙、磷酸钙+碳酸钙、硝酸钙+氯化钙、硅酸钙(茎中稍有不同),根、茎、叶中草酸钙占所有钙组分总量和总钙含量的比例均最高,其次是果胶酸钙。(3)各样地野生毛葡萄叶片中Ca+Mg的含量范围在1.30%~4.07%之间,绝大多数在3.0%~4.0%范围内,表现出喜钙植物叶中高Ca+Mg含量的特性。(4)在喀斯特地区的野生毛葡萄体内,多种钙组分含量与土壤中的钙含量呈显著或极显著的正相关关系。(5)扫描电镜观察发现,野生毛葡萄叶片和根中储存有大量的草酸钙晶体,叶片中的草酸钙可通过气孔排出体外。研究发现,喀斯特地区野生毛葡萄属于喜钙植物,对喀斯特高钙环境的适应性强,叶片中钙的富集量大,有大量的草酸钙和果胶酸钙储存于体内,这种储钙特性和气孔的排钙行为对野生毛葡萄适应高钙环境具有重要作用。  相似文献

Calcium oxalate crystals have potential roles in plants as partof a defence mechanism against herbivores and/or in accumulatingexcess calcium. To date, these potential roles have been studiedindependently. In this experimental study the effects of calciumlevels and herbivory on the production of calcium oxalate crystals(i.e. druse, spherical crystal aggregates) were examined inseedlings of Sida rhombifolia. Seedlings were subjected to threecalcium levels (low, normal or high) and an artificial herbivorytreatment. Calcium levels and herbivory both affected densityof crystals in leaves. Leaves from seedlings grown in low calciumhad a greater crystal density than those grown in high calcium.Leaves from seedlings subjected to herbivory had a greater crystaldensity than those from seedlings not subjected to herbivory.This study provides additional evidence that calcium oxalatecrystal production depends not only on calcium levels but canalso be influenced by external pressures such as herbivory.In addition to their physiological role in plants, these resultssuggest that calcium oxalate crystals can also act as a defencemechanism against herbivores. Summary Lemna minor, which produces many calcium oxalate raphide crystals, was grown on media containing in addition to Ca, 200 M of one of the following divalent cations: Ba, Cd, Co, Mn or Sr. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis showed that only Sr was incorporated into the raphides at levels detectable by the analysis technique. Incorporation of Sr into other insoluble compounds, such as cell wall material, could not be detected. Plant species which form different crystal types in their leaves (Beta vulgaris, crystal sand;Arthrostema ciliatum, druse;Glycine canescens, prismatic) also incorporated Sr into their crystals when grown hydroponically on nutrient medium containing 200 M Sr.Axenic cultures ofL. minor were used to examine further the process of Sr incorporation into plant crystals. When grown on nutrient solution with 5 M Ca, increasing the Sr concentration resulted in increases of the amount of Sr incorporated into the raphide crystals. The ratio of Sr to Ca became greater as the Sr concentration was increased. This ratio change was due to both an increase in the amount of Sr incorporated and a decrease in the Ca incorporated. Analysis of the number of crystal idioblasts formed as a function of Sr concentration shows fewer idioblasts are produced as Sr became high. Competition with Ca and interference of Ca utilization by Sr is indicated.  相似文献

Anabaena cylindrica grown with nitrate required higher levels of sodium (0.4 meq/l NaCl) to prevent chlorosis than when grown without combined nitrogen (0.004 meq/l NaCl). Nitrite accumulated in sodium-deficient cultures containing nitrate. Amounts of nitrite similar to those found in deficient cultures when added to normal cultures resulted in a chlorosis of the cells. Thus loss of chlorophyll was caused by nitrite toxicity.  相似文献

A soil Ca/Mg quotient greater than unity is generally considered necessary for normal plant growth but some serpentine plants are adapted to much lower Ca/Mg quotients, resulting from a major cation imbalance in their substrata. In order to investigate the growth and tolerance responses of serpentine and non-serpentine species to varied Ca/Mg quotients, controlled nutrient solution experiments were performed using an a newly reported Iranian endemic serpentine plant, Cleome heratensis Bunge et Bien. Ex Boiss. and a related non-serpentine species Cleome foliolosa DC. and a Eurasian Ni-hyperaccumulating species Alyssum murale Waldst. and Kit. Seedlings were grown in modified Hoagland’s solutions with varying Ca and Mg concentrations (0.2–2.5 and 0.5–10 mM, respectively) in a fully factorial randomised block design. The yields of the two serpentine plants increased significantly as Mg concentrations in the nutrient solution were increased from 0.5 to 4 mM but decreased in the 10 mM Mg treatment. For C. foliolosa yields decreased significantly from 0.5 to 10 mM Mg, indicating the sensitivity of this non-serpentine plant, and the relative tolerance of the serpentine plants to extremely high levels of Mg. Shoot and root Mg and Ca concentrations in C. heratensis and A. murale were higher than those in C. foliolosa in the low and moderate Mg treatments, supporting the view that many serpentine plants have a relatively high requirement for Mg. Maximum Mg concentrations were found in the roots of C. heratensis. Yields of C. heratensis and A. murale did not change significantly as Ca levels in nutrient solution increased from 0.2 to 2.5 mM Ca, However the yield of C. foliolosa increased significantly from 0.2 to 1.5 mM Ca, indicating sensitivity in this non-serpentine plant and tolerance of the two serpentine plants to low levels of Ca correlated with tissue Ca concentrations, probably because of a greater ability for Ca uptake at low-Ca availability. Calcium deficiency in the low-Ca treatments could be a reason for reduced yield in the non-serpentine plants.  相似文献

Young plants of Phaseolus and Canavalia were grown in nutrient solutions where calcium had been partially or totally replaced by either strontium or sodium. The deleterious effect of this replacement on growth and development was greater with strontium than with sodium. As the calcium content of the nutrient solution was decreased fewer calcium oxalate crystals were formed in leaf tissues. There were fewer crystals formed when calcium was replaced by strontium than by sodium. Changes in solubility characteristics of the crystals indicated that they had incorporated strontium.  相似文献

In this study, we linked Ca speciation with isotope composition in plants. To do this, we performed leachate experiments to access the soluble Ca, structurally bound Ca and insoluble Ca (i.e., water and weak acid resistant) within beech tree organs (Fagus sylvatica L.). Ca isotopic measurements were combined with infrared spectroscopy and calcium oxalate biomineralization identification. The results from our study indicate that bark and leaves are the most enriched in monohydrated calcium oxalate crystals (whewellite), which are observable in parenchyma and sclerenchyma tissues, whereas roots and wood are enriched in structurally bound Ca. Our leaching experiments also show decreasing δ44/40Ca isotopic signatures in the order of soluble Ca > structurally bound Ca > insoluble Ca. This finding implies that because leaves degrade faster than wooden organs and because Ca linked to pectate decomposes faster than Ca linked to oxalate crystals, differential Ca isotopic signatures are expected to be observed during litter degradation.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of ectomycorrhizal infection on growth and nutrient uptake, especially of P and K of dipterocarp seedlings.Hopea helferi (Dyer) Blanco andHopea odorata Roxb. seedlings were grown in a sandy loam soil given a basal dressing. Nutrient treatments were unamended soil (NIL), amended soil with the addition of P and K (F), amended soil without P but with K (-P), amended soil without K but with P (-K), amended soil without P or K addition (-PK). Seedlings grown in the amended soil treatments showed foliar symptoms suggestive of calcium deficiency. Ectomycorrhizal infection appeared to improve shoot Ca concentration and relieved the foliar symptoms. Ectomycorrhizal infection inH. odorata plants increased shoot P concentration and increased shoot and total dry weight to the same or greater extent than those of uninfected plants growing on P amended soil.H. helferi showed a positive response to ectomycorrhizal infection in shoot, root and total dry weight in all nutrient treatments but no response to the nutrient treatments themselves.  相似文献
