1. The influence of underyearling (0+) fish on planktonic algal biomass and composition was examined during June–August in eight large enclosures (40 m3). Averaged for the entire period, Daphnia densities, transparency and phosphate concentrations were significantly higher ( P < 0.05) and chlorophyll a values significantly lower in fishless controls than in enclosures with fish (bleak ( Alburnus alburnus ), roach ( Rutilus rutilus ) or perch ( Perca fluviatilis )).
2. Enclosures without fish demonstrated a more heterogeneous algal community structure than enclosures with fish. Desmidiales and dinoflagellates were more abundant in controls, whereas green algae dominated the phytoplankton community in enclosures with fish. Larger grazing-resistant algae occurred most frequently in enclosures without fish.
3. The importance of cascading trophic interactions was demonstrated even under strong eutrophic conditions. The strongest effects on Daphnia densities, phytoplankton biomass and nutrients were observed in enclosures with perch, with weaker effects in enclosures with cyprinids. Differences in initial fish size and species accounted for the top-down effects observed. The results of this study emphasize the importance of 0+ perch as a key predator in structuring the plankton community in lakes.  相似文献

Top-down control of prey assemblages by fish predation has been clearly demonstrated for zooplankton and macroinvertebrates. However, in the benthic communities of freshwater ecosystems, the impact of fish predation on meiofaunal assemblages is nearly unknown. In this study, the predation effects of juvenile carp (Cyprinus carpio) and gudgeon (Gobio gobio) on meiofaunal abundance, biomass, community structure, and the diversity of nematodes were examined using microcosms that were sampled repeatedly over 64 days. Significant differences in abundance and biomass were found between the two fish treatments (carp and gudgeon) and their respective controls for nematodes, oligochaetes, and crustaceans (copepods, harpacticoids, ostracods, and cladocerans), but not for rotifers. These changes were consistent with top-down control of the freshwater meiofaunal assemblages in the microcosms over time. By contrast, small-bodied meiofauna was more abundant, suggesting indirect facilitation. Neither the species richness nor the diversity of the nematode community was affected by fish predation. The results indicate that predation by juvenile freshwater fish depresses the overall abundance and biomass of meiofaunal assemblages, except for rotifers, and alters the size structure of the meiofaunal community. Therefore, the meiofaunal assemblages of freshwater ecosystems may be influenced by bottom-feeding juvenile fish, e.g., carp and gudgeon, through top-down control of meiofaunal populations.  相似文献

1. In addition to effects of direct predation by planktivorous fish, nutrient recycling by fish may also contribute to structuring foodwebs in lakes. There is little evidence, however, about whether underyearling fish undergoing several ontogenetic diet shifts may have a comparable bottom-up impact. 2. This study examined seasonal patterns of phosphorus (P) concentration and external load, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos, and diet shifts in three underyearling fish [perch (Perca fluviatilis), roach (Rutilus rutilus) and ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus)] in the shallow, hypertrophic biomanipulated Bautzen reservoir, Germany. Phosphorus metabolism of fish was calculated by a balanced bioenergetics model on the basis of fish diet, growth and water temperature. 3. The fish showed several shifts from planktivory to other food sources during the sampling period from May to September. These shifts were probably caused by the seasonal succession of the zooplankton community, mainly the midsummer decline of Daphnia galeata. 4. The diet shifts in fish also had consequences for the amount of P consumed and released. During periods of dominant zooplanktivory, the excretion of P did not exceed the removal of P stored in pelagic prey. By contrast, if benthivory dominated, fish subsidized the pelagic P pool by excreting more P from benthic prey than had been removed from the pelagic area. This occurred predominantly in perch and ruffe during periods of low zooplankton biomass, whereas the roach ate more algae and therefore excreted less P of benthic origin. 5. Phosphorus release by underyearling fish was estimated at a maximum of 0.1 mg m–3 JY day–1. This value was negligible compared with both the external load of P to Bautzen reservoir and the concentration of P in the pelagic area during summer. It is therefore concluded that both the predominance of underyearling zooplanktivorous fish and the high Daphnia biomass during certain periods of the year in the Bautzen reservoir may be the reason that nutrient release by the fish structured the foodweb only marginally. 6. This study suggests that biomanipulation has altered both top-down and bottom-up impacts of fish in Bautzen reservoir. The highest efficiency of foodweb manipulations may be obtained after reduction of the external P loading below a certain threshold. In turn, if external restoration of eutrophied lakes is not accompanied by changes in fish community, then the combined forces of strong zooplanktivory and high P recycling of dense stocks of zooplanktivorous and benthivorous fish may hold the water in a eutrophic-like stage, even if external load has been significantly reduced.  相似文献

浮游植物是水体生态系统敞水区最重要的初级生产者,其组成与多样性反映了群落的结构类型和存在状态。通过围隔实验,模拟水库春季发生的营养盐加富和鱼类放养的干扰,分析在这两种干扰下的浮游植物群落演替过程中优势种和稀有种的变化,并通过以丰度与生物量为变量的香农和辛普森多样性指数的计算,分析浮游植物群落演替过程中的多样性变化特征。结果表明,营养盐加富干扰下的浮游植物群落的优势种变化和演替更为明显,营养盐加富与鱼类添加对浮游植物群落多样性变化的影响符合中度干扰理论。在优势种优势度变化较大的浮游植物群落演替过程中,多样性指数与浮游植物生物量有较高的负相关性。在浮游植物群落演替过程中,香农和辛普森多样性指数的变化趋势基本一致,采用丰度与生物量为变量的两种多样性指数的计算结果对实验系统中浮游植物群落多样性的分析结果没有明显的影响。  相似文献

1 The effects of disturbances, in the form of storm events, on phytoplankton community structure were examined over the course of four years in Eau Galle Reservoir, Wisconsin, USA.
2 Disturbances consistently brought about significant, but highly transient, increases in apparent phytoplankton species richness. It is likely that these resulted from temporary increases in the biomass of previously undetected rare species.
3 Substantial shifts in community dominance were confined to large, early season events, and were seldom long-lived. Later 'climax' communities were highly resistant to any changes in dominance, even when increases in species richness occurred.
4 Regardless of when they occurred, disturbances tended to favour species from a narrow range of the successional sequence.  相似文献

海上溢油和船舶含油废水排放等石油污染给海洋生态环境带来严峻考验。为了解石油污染对海洋浮游植物的短期群落效应, 于实验室对采自浙江省乐清湾海域的四季浮游植物进行了14天的微宇宙实验研究。通过测定不同浓度原油水溶性成分(water accommodated fraction, WAF)胁迫下浮游植物群落各种类的细胞密度, 发现原油WAF对浮游植物群落的种类数、多样性、均匀度和优势种组成及优势度均有极显著影响。原油污染组的种类数均低于对照组, 多样性指数也总体上低于对照组, 但均匀度指数无明显规律。WAF对各季节浮游植物群落优势种的影响存在季节、浓度梯度和种类差异: 1)在高浓度WAF (≥2.28 mg·L-1)胁迫下, 各季节浮游植物群落中中肋骨条藻(Skeletonema costatum)的优势度均呈升高趋势, 除秋季外, 长菱形藻(Nitzschia longissima)在其余季节的优势度均显著下降, 另外秋季实验中微小原甲藻(Prorocentrum minimum)的优势度呈先升高后下降的趋势, 秋冬季斜纹藻(Pleurosigma sp.)和念珠直链藻(Melosira moniliformis)的优势度呈下降趋势; 2)在低浓度WAF (≤1.16 mg·L-1)胁迫下, 除秋季中肋骨条藻仍为绝对优势种外, 其余季节该种微藻的优势度均呈下降趋势, 春、夏季长菱形藻的优势度逐渐升高, 而冬季则是念珠直链藻的优势度不断增加。原油WAF影响下, 可能r策略种将逐渐取代k策略种, 导致浮游植物群落趋于小型化。  相似文献

Synopsis We examined the short-term effects of the natural catastrophic collapse of a beaver dam on downstream benthic insect density and fish community structure in a headwater tributary of the Mississippi River. The catastrophic collapse of the dam and ensuing flash flood resulted in a dramatic (< 90%) decrease in benthic insect density in riffle and pool habitats. Sixty days after collapse of the dam, insect densities in riffles were 62% of pre-collapse densities. Insect recolonization of pools was slower than for riffles; 60 days after collapse of the dam insect densities in pools were 8% of pre-collapse levels. Collapse of the beaver dam altered the structure of the downstream fish community by causing a short-term (2–4 days) influx of pond species, resulting in a brief increase in species richness and abundance. Fish species richness and abundance then decreased for 4–60 days to levels below those prior to the collapse.  相似文献

Indirect effects occur when two species interact through one or more intermediate species. Theoretical studies indicate that indirect interactions between two prey types that share common predators can be positive, neutral or negative. We document a positive indirect interaction between different types of prey fish on coral reefs in Australia. A high abundance of one type of prey fish (cardinalfishes: Apogonidae) resulted in higher recruitment, abundance and species richness of other prey fish. Our evidence indicates that these effects were not due to differential settlement but were instead due to differential post-settlement predation. We hypothesize that resident piscivores altered their foraging behaviour by concentrating on highly abundant cardinal-fish when they were present, leaving recruits of other species relatively unmolested. Indirect effects were evident within 48 h of settlement and persisted throughout the 42-day experiment, highlighting the importance of early post-settlement processes in these communities.  相似文献

Two short-term (4–5 week) sets of enclosure experiments were conducted during winter periods (1982, 1983) in Americana Reservoir near Sao Paulo to test effects of fish predation reducing grazing pressure by large cladoceran zooplankton (mainlyDaphnia gessneri) on phytoplankton density, cell size distribution, biomass, species composition and richness. Two enclosures were stocked with the zooplanktivorous characin fishAstyanax whereas two others remained fishless during each set of experiments. Within two weeks or less, phytoplankton cell density and biomass were significantly reduced in the fishless enclosures, particularly in the small cell size (< 15 µm) fraction. Changes also occurred in species composition and richness. These shifts generally were maintained or intensified during the course of the experiments.  相似文献

The dynamics of the phytoplankton community of a eutrophic reservoir are described for a two year period. Fifty-eight species were recorded, 25 of them common. Bacillariophyta dominated during the winter and early spring and Chlorophyta during late spring, to be replaced by a bloom of Cyanophyta. The mean and peak biomass of phytoplankton was 8.6 mg 1–1 and 40.8 mg 1–1 in 1981, and 8.3 mg 1–1 and 37.6 mg 1–1 in 1982. Temperature accounted for 67.3% and pH for 8% of the variation in total phytoplankton biomass over the two year period, using a multiple regression technique.Both horizontal and vertical patchiness, measured as an index of mean crowding, were recorded in the reservoir. Horizontal aggregations were associated with spring blooms of Chlorophyta and summer blooms of Cyanophyta, while vertical aggregations were most marked during the summer bloom of Cyanophyta. Concentrations of phytoplankton were influenced by wind, the prevailing southwesterly wind accumulating algae in the northeasterly arm of the reservoir during much of the year.  相似文献

1. According to previous field studies in the biomanipulated Bautzen reservoir (Germany), a midsummer decline of the dominating zooplankter, Daphnia galeata, was suggested to be initiated by a simultaneous occurrence of low fecundity of the daphnids and a selective feeding of underyearling fish on mature daphnids. The timing of both processes was assumed to be triggered by spring water temperature. However, the field data were not appropriate for testing whether yearly differences in spring warming are strong enough to control the predation rate of underyearling fish on daphnids.
2. By combining field data on fish growth, feeding and population mortality, the daily uptake of Daphnia by a virtual population of underyearling perch (Perca fluviatilis) was simulated. In addition, the daily predatory mortality of mature daphnids was calculated independently. Scenarios with a warm and a cold spring were compared. Furthermore, the delayed warming of a pelagic zone of a lake versus a littoral one was simulated. Sensitivity of the simulation to changes in five parameters was tested.
3. In both the warm spring scenario and the littoral warming scenario, more daphnids in general and more mature daphnids in particular were eaten, compared with the cold spring and pelagic scenarios. The predatory mortality of mature daphnids was driven by the increasing gape size of growing fish such that in warmer years the fish reach earlier the size at which they can eat mature daphnids.
4. The simulation was most sensitive to changes in daily mortality rate of the fish and to the size at maturity of the daphnids. Since at least the fish mortality is also temperature‐dependent via the growth rates of fish, the predation rate of perch on D. galeata in Bautzen reservoir is substantially increased during a warm spring. This underlines the assumption that even a slight global warming may have a decisive influence on food web processes due to the fine‐scaled patterns of trophic interactions in lakes.  相似文献

2008年3月采用室内中型受控系统,开展了大型海藻龙须菜(Gracilaria lemaneiformis)对浮游植物群落结构影响的实验研究.实验培养池为9个2 m×0.7 m×1 m的培养池,注入1 000 L沙滤海水.实验设置3个处理组:对照组(未添加龙须菜)、3 kg龙须菜组和6 kg龙须菜组,每组3个平行,实验周期为10 d.结果表明,未添加龙须菜的对照组发生了中肋骨条藻赤潮,水体浑浊并伴有恶臭,浮游植物细胞密度峰值为3.88×107cells·L-1,叶绿素a浓度峰值为43.87 μg·L-1;3 kg和6 kg龙须菜处理组水体浮游植物细胞密度最高值分别为3.78×106cells·L-1和1.33×107cells·L-1,叶绿素a浓度最高值分别为15.16 μg·L-1和6.69 μg·L-1,均显著低于对照组(p≤0.01).龙须菜处理组浮游植物种类较多,群落结构较稳定.大型海藻龙须菜作为富营养化水体生物修复材料,可有效提高水质和防治赤潮.  相似文献

1.  Connell's (1978) intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH) has been proposed as one explanation of why diversity is often highest at intermediate levels of disturbance. We used a model phytoplankton responses to environmental change (PROTECH) to investigate the validity of this hypothesis.
2. In a simulated phytoplankton assemblage of eight species, we found that the relationship between the increased intensity of a single forcing event and diversity was described by a positively skewed curve.
3. A progressive increase in forcing frequency introduced a sharp decrease in diversity at a threshold frequency. However, the highest diversity values were found at an intermediate frequency of disturbance.
4. We described the shape of this breakpoint response as like a 'cliff' and reconcile it with multiple stable-point theory. It is argued that the IDH should possibly be represented by this 'cliff' relationship, which may be applied to (or encourage the re-examination of) many previous studies.  相似文献

Centricdiatoms and small cryptomonads were the initial dominants. Inthe lake and fish tubes, this community was replaced by nanochlorophytes.In the fish/ net and control tubes, a very different successionoccurred, where large cryptomonads became dominant These resultsindicate that sediment nutrient resuspensions by fish activitiescan maintain a phytoplankton community in an immature state,with small r-selected dominants. When sediment nutrient resuspensionwas prevented (in the fish/net and control tubes), larger algalspecies increased in relative biovolume, regardless of whetherfish were present.  相似文献

An enclosure experiment was conducted to assess the effects of a zooplankton elimination on the structure of a phytoplankton community. Phytoplankton biomass and production were higher in grazer-free enclosures, while the productivity per unit biovolume was lower. Exclusion of zooplankton favoured the majority of algal species, especially chrysophyceans (Dinobryon spp.) and the diatom Rhizosolenia, while mucilagineous green-algae were disfavoured. Middle sized algae (ESD 15–50 µm) and those with the largest Surface Area/Volume ratio were proportionally most favoured by the elimination of grazers.These differences in phytoplankton community structure are discussed in relation to effects of direct selective grazing and nutrient recycling by zooplankton. Some differences, as the immediate positive response of Dinobryon and Rhizosolenia, are probably caused by grazing release, while others, e.g. the response of mucilagineous species, might be caused by changed competitive relationships between the algae.  相似文献

Prior to the spring bloom in 2003 and 2004, batch temperature experiments of approximately 3 weeks' duration were carried out in land-based mesocosms in at the Espeland field station (Norway), with temperatures on average increased ~ 2.7-3 °C (T1) and ~ 5.2-5.6 °C (T2) above in situ fjord temperature (RM). The development in the chlorophyll concentrations showed an earlier bloom as a response to increased temperatures but the carbon biomass showed that the warmest treatment yielded the lowest biomass. This study indicates that a part of the relationship between temperature and spring bloom timing stems from a temperature-induced change in phytoplankton algal physiology (the efficiency of photosystem II, Fv/Fm, and growth rates, µmax), i.e. a direct temperature effect. Data analysis performed on microscope identified and quantified species did not show a significant temperature influence on phytoplankton community composition. However, the HPLC data indicated that temperature changes of as little as 3 °C influence the community composition. In particular, these data showed that peridinin-containing dinoflagellates only increased in abundance in the heated mesocosms and that a prasinophycean bloom, which was undetected in the microscope analyses, occurred prior to the blooms of all other phytoplankton classes in all treatments. The microscope analyses did reveal a temperature effect on individual species distribution patterns. Thalassionema nitzschioides was more abundant in the warm treatments and, in the warmest treatment, the spring bloom forming Skeletonema marinoi comprised a smaller proportion of the diatom community than in the other treatments.  相似文献

Top-down control of phytoplankton by zooplankton is possible through reductions in density of zooplanktivorous fish. Little Mere is a shallow lake where the effects of sewage effluent caused such a reduction. This allowed the large-bodied cladoceran, Daphnia magna Straus, to develop huge populations, preventing potentially large algal crops from developing.Subsequent diversion of the effluent is anticipated to lead to recovery of the fish community, reduced numbers of large-bodied grazers, and increased phytoplankton biomass. Whether the aquatic plant community, present in Little Mere, is resilient to such changes may depend upon whether cyanophytes are favoured, or not.  相似文献

1. Research has often focused on pelagic food chains and processes of lakes; less is known about the contribution of benthic energy flows to whole‐lake ecosystem energetics. This stems from the fact that the shoreline and littoral habitats, which provide a key linkage between sediment and water column, have only recently become a significant focus for study. 2. This study aimed to quantify the feeding and phosphorus allocation of a juvenile fish community in a littoral zone of a shallow lake in response to the biomass succession of the invertebrate prey community. Habitats comprising reed and adjacent open water were sampled over two consecutive years during day and night. 3. Although there were substantial year‐to‐year differences in the biomass of invertebrates, the fish community composition, diet consumption rates and phosphorus allocations were very similar in both study years. Biomasses and predation impacts by juvenile fish on prey groups were substantially higher within the reeds than in the adjacent open water habitat. This may be explained by the refuge‐seeking behaviour of the fish. 4. In general, invertebrates were negligibly influenced by fish feeding, with the exception for a strong top‐down control of large cladocerans. In response to the resulting low Daphnia biomass, fish were forced to switch to a higher degree of benthivory. Consequently, juvenile fish in littoral reed stands may shift benthic‐derived energy and phosphorus via the excretion of soluble reactive phosphorus into the open water.  相似文献

The influence of bacterivorous nematodes (Diplolaimelloides meyli, Diplolaimelloides oschei, Diplolaimella dievengatensis, Panagrolaimus paetzoldi) on the development of a bacterial community growing on decaying cordgrass detritus was studied in laboratory microcosm experiments. Cordgrass leaves were incubated on a sediment surface with a natural bacterial mixture containing bacteria from sediment, cordgrass detritus and habitat water. The four nematode species were applied separately to the microcosms; controls remained without nematodes. Samples were taken seven times over a 65-day period. The bacterial community structure was analysed by means of DGGE of the 16S rRNA genes. Multi Dimensional Scaling showed grouping of the samples per treatment. Analysis of Similarities indicated that the differences between treatments were significantly larger than differences within treatments. Our results suggest that nematodes can have a significant structuring top-down influence on the 'pool' of bacteria growing on the detritus, even at low densities. Dissimilarities were similar between all treatments. Differences in bacterial community composition within the treatments with monhysterids (D. meyli, D. oschei and D. dievengatensis) can be explained by species-specific food preferences. Panagrolaimus paetzoldi on the other hand feeds unselectively, and thus affects the bacterial community differently. A top-down effect of the nematodes on the diversity of the bacterial community was only evident under high grazing pressure, i.e. in the presence of P. paetzoldi.  相似文献
