The anterior alimentary tract of Diclidophora merlangi is composed of a complex series of morphologically distinct epithelia interconnected by septate desmosomes and penetrated by the openings of numerous unicellular glands. The mouth and buccal cavity are lined by an infolding of modified body tegument, distinguished by uniciliate sense receptors, buccal gland openings, and in the buccal region by a dense, spiny appearance. The prepharynx is covered by an irregularly folded epithelium and, for part of its length, by the luminal cytoplasm of the prepharyngeal gland cells. The epithelium is syncytial and pleiomorphic, and regional variation in structure is common. A separate epithelium invests the lips of the pharynx and its free surface is greatly amplified by numerous, dense lamellae of varying dimensions. The lip epithelium is continuous with cytoplasmic processes of cells located external to the pharynx. A further, distinct epithelium borders the pharynx lumen and is composed of discrete cytoplasmic units connected by short septate desmosomes. The oesophagus is lined by a modified caecal epithelium, lacking haematin cells, and, in places, is perforated by the openings of oesophageal gland cells; it is continuous with the syncytial connecting tissue of the gut caeca. 相似文献

Human seminal plasma contains high concentrations of prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP), prostate-specific antigen (PSA), beta-microseminoprotein (MSP), semenogelin I (SgI), and semenogelin II (SgII), whereas only PAP and MSP are present in rodents. In order to gain a better understanding of the evolution and function of semen proteins, we have studied ejaculates from the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus)-a New World monkey. Semen samples were analyzed with SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, and isoelectric focusing. Under reducing conditions the dominating protein components appear as heterogeneous material of 55-70 kDa and distinct protein bands of 85, 17, 16, and 15 kDa. The heterogeneous material contains glycosylated material detected by an antiserum recognizing both human SgI and SgII. Southern blotting indicates that the common marmoset has genes for both SgI and SgII. There are several marmoset MSP genes, but the strong immunoreactivity against one 15 kDa semen component with pI 7.3 suggests preferential expression of one gene in the prostate. Expression of two other genes cannot be excluded as indicated by weak reaction to isoforms with pI 6.6 and 4.9. Unexpectedly, PSA was not detected by either immunological methods or activity measurements. This is in agreement with results from Southern blotting suggesting that the common marmoset might not have a PSA gene. Thus, in this study we have shown that semen coagulum proteins are present in marmoset seminal plasma, but the lack of PSA precludes a similar liquefaction as of human semen. 相似文献

The mouth, pharynx and oesophagus of Calicotyle are lined by syncytial epithelia, and there are numerous unicellular glands associated with the oesophagus. An infolding of unmodified external tegument lines the mouth cavity and is connected by discrete cytoplasmic processes to subjacent perikarya. It contains two types of secretory body and its luminal surface is invested with a finely filamentous coating. The pharynx and oesophagus are lined by irregularly-folded epithelia that are interconnected by a septate desmosome. Membranous inclusions distinguish the pharynx epithelium and there is a well developed basal lamina for insertion of the pharyngeal muscles. The oesophagus epithelium is perforated by the openings of the oesophageal glands. These lie in the surrounding parenchyma and produce a dense, membrane-bound secretion which is conveyed by duct-like extensions of the glands to the oesophagus lumen. The ducts are supported in places by microtubules and are anchored to the oesophageal epithelium by septate desmosomes. A septate desmosome also marks the junction between the epithelium and the gut caeca. 相似文献

The ultrastructural differentiation of the secretory cells and the nature of secretory proteins in the male accessory gland of Drosophila funebris have been studied by electron-microscopic and immunological methods. (1) In the pupae at days before eclosion, secretory products can be detected in the lumen, even though most glandular cells are at the initial phase of differentiation. At the time of eclosion both main and secondary cells are fully differentiated, but the whole set of five immunologically active proteins are detectable only on the second to third day of adult life. (2) The secondary cells contain giant protein granules, the so-called filamentous bodies, which become partially fused and the filaments assume a twisted form. Randomly dispersed filaments and closely packed filament bundles are also visible in the gland lumen. Antigenic labelling of ultrathin sections and immunoreplica electrophoresis yielded no evidence for the microtubular nature of these filaments. The secretion stored in the lumen contains in addition a large quantity of flocculent proteins which have their origin in the main cells. (3) During the period of high secretory activity in the 7-day-old male flies no vacuolization and disintegration of either the main or secondary cells have been observed. We conclude that both types of cells have the merocrine secretory mechanism. (4) Ultrastructural alterations in the glandular cells confirmed our previous observation that copulation stimulates RNA and protein synthesis. 相似文献

Pea crabs of the subfamily Pinnotherinae (Pinnotheridae) have a high investment in reproduction and an outstanding reproductive output, probably as an adaptation to the required increase in reproductive rate due to the pinnotherids small size and their parasitic, host‐dependant way of life. In the present study, we investigate the male internal reproductive structures and the ultrastructure of spermatozoa of Pinnotheres pisum and Nepinnotheres pinnotheres by histological methods and both scanning‐ and transmission electron microscopy. In the Brachyura, the male internal reproductive systems generally consist of paired testes and corresponding vasa deferentia where spermatozoa develop and mature. Spermatozoal ultrastructure of the investigated pinnotherids conforms to the thoracotreme type, however, N. pinnotheres has an accessory opercular ring and a periopercular rim, neither of which are present in spermatozoa of P. pisum. Spermatozoa are enclosed within spermatophores in the secretory proximal vas deferens. Two types of secretions were observed in P. pisum and N. pinnotheres: an electron dense substance secreted in the proximal vas deferens involved in spermatophore formation, and large electron‐luscent vesicles constituting the seminal plasma in the medial and distal vas deferens. The medial vas deferens is strongly widened compared to other brachyurans to purpose storing spermatophores embedded in seminal plasma. Tubular appendices, which produce and store large amounts of seminal plasma, arise from the distal region of the vas deferens. The appendices extend into the ventral cephalothorax and also in the first pleomere. The latter being an exceptional location for reproductive structures among male brachyurans. J. The accessory reproductive glands of female S. gregaria are tubular extensions of the paired genital ducts, which in the mature female contain large amounts of a proteinaceous secretion used in the formation of the egg pod. In the 4th and 5th-instar female the glands are indistinguishable from the remainder of the mesodermally derived genital ducts. Towards the end of the 5th stadium, however, the accessory gland region only acquires characteristic convolutions which persist throughout the adult stages. At this time the epithelium of the entire ducts becomes reorganized into a unicellular epithelium. Only one cell type occurs throughout the length of the glands, and also in the egg calyces and lateral oviducts. The cells are inactive immediately after final ecdysis and remain in this state until the level of juvenile hormone in the haemolymph rises. The hormone acts directly on the cells triggering a rapid proliferation of organelles associated with protein secretion, and thereby increasing the volume of apical cytoplasm. Microvilli develop at the luminar plasma membrane, while irregular infoldings form at the base of the cells. As the gland matures the major organelle, the rough endoplasmic reticulum, changes from the lamellar to the vesicular form. Secretion is released into the lumen by the ‘microapocrine’ method. 相似文献

Summary The present study was undertaken to describe the morphological and organizational modifications that occur in apyrene and eupyrene spermatozoa along the male adult reproductive tract of the butterfly, Euptoieta hegesia. Testis, vas deferens, vesicula seminalis and ductus ejaculatorius were studied by transmission electron microscopy. In the testis, both sperm types are organized into cysts; apyrene sperm are devoid of extracellular structures while eupyrene ones have lacinate and reticular appendages. In the testis basal region, both sperm pass through an epithelial barrier and lose their cystic envelope. The eupyrene morphological and organizational modifications are more drastic than the apyrene ones. From the vas deferens to the ductus ejaculatorius, apyrene sperm are dispersed in the lumen and acquire several concentric layers that are formed by the folding of their abundant cell membrane. The apyrene distribution observed here suggests that their functions include eupyrene transportation. Eupyrene sperm, however, remain aggregated along the tract. In the vas deferens, they are covered by a filamentous material that develops into a homogeneous matrix surrounding the spermatozoa coat in the vesicula seminalis and the ductus ejaculatorius. Eupyrene sperm undergo complex morphological changes that include the loss of lacinate appendages and the formation of a dense and heterogeneous extracellular coat. The formation of the matrix and the coat in eupyrene extratesticular sperm is related to the loss of lacinate appendages. These changes are in general extracellular and are probably important for sperm maturation. 相似文献

In eutherian mammals, the male reproductive accessory glands (RAGs) comprise the prostate, bulbourethral glands, ampullary glands, and the seminal vesicles. Their composition, anatomy and function vary widely between species. This study aimed to characterize histologically and compare the RAGs of bats. The RAGs of Noctilio albiventris (Noctilionidae) and Rhynchonycteris naso (Emballonuridae) were studied using anatomical and histological methods, and were reconstructed three dimensionally. The RAGs of N. albiventris and R. naso are composed of a compact glandular complex that surrounds the urethra and a pair of bulbourethral glands, which are extra‐abdominally located in the inguinal region. In both species, the glandular complex is composed of two well‐defined prostatic regions (ventral and dorsal). The ventral region showed an atypical epithelium (holocrine), where no obvious cellular limits were observed, and PAS‐positive secretion. The dorsal region had a pseudostratified cuboidal epithelium, with basal and secretory cells, and PAS‐negative secretion. Noctilio albiventris also had urethral glands (Littre glands) surrounding the urethra, however, R. naso had only muscles. Both species had bulbourethral glands, with simple columnar epithelium and PAS‐positive secretion. In conclusion, the RAGs of N. albiventris and R. naso comprised a pair of bulbourethral glands and an intra‐abdominal complex, composed of a prostate with two different regions (ventral and dorsal), while the ampullary glands and seminal vesicles were missing in both species. This morphology was more closely related between N. albiventris and R. naso, and to species of the family Phyllostomidae than to families Molossidae and Vespertilionidae. J. Morphological and histochemical studies have been made on the development of the prostate gland of the digenetic trematode, Paramphistomum cervi during the course of its infection in sheep; histochemical characterization of prostate gland secretion in adult worms and its functional relationship with the transport of spermatozoa have also been studied. In 6-wk-old worms, the terminal portion of the male genital duct is formed of what appears to be a syncytial epithelium containing a relatively large number of nuclei compared to the rest of the male duct. Cellular organization of the prostate gland becomes conspicuous in 8-wk-old worms and the prostate gland is fully developed by 16 wk. Two types of prostate gland cells, characteristic of the adult, become distinct in 16-wk-old worms which contain spermatozoa in the lumen of their vas deferens and pars prostatica. Adult worms show two types of prostate gland cells: type I containing mainly glycoprotein and type II mainly phospholipid granules. Weak-to-strong activities of acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, esterase, lipase, adenosine triphosphatase, tetrazolium reductase, NAD-diaphorase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, glyceraldehyde dehydrogenase, α-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase have been observed in the prostate gland. The release of prostate gland secretion and the passage of spermatozoa through the lumen of pars prostatica appear to be synchronized events. 相似文献

The balancing effects of bulbourethral gland secretion (BUS) and of seminal vesicle secretion (SVS) on goat semen quality were previously demonstrated. In the present study, electron microscope observations revealed a high frequency of spermatozoa with a reacted acrosome among spermatozoa from cauda epididymis exposed to BUS in the presence of milk. This frequency was significantly reduced when SVS had been added either before or after BUS. No reacted acrosome was observed in the absence of milk. All mount spermatozoa were incubated with milk or SVS or BUS or combinations of the three materials labeled with colloidal gold. SVS attached specifically on the plasma membrane covering the anterior part of the acrosome, whereas BUS spread all over the sperm head. Milk attached on the anterior half of the sperm head only when BUS was present in the sperm environment. It is concluded that BUS plays an active role in the induction of the acrosome reaction in the presence of milk and that SVS counteracts this role. 相似文献

Extracts of the atrial gland of the sea hare Aplysia californiea (Mollusca) induce egg laying when injected into mature individuals. Since egg laying is controlled endogenously by a peptide secreted by neuroendocrine cells in the central nervous system, the relationship between the atrial gland and these central neurons has become an issue of interest. With the particular objective of examining secretory structures we undertook an ultrastructural study of the atrial gland and adjacent tissues. This study revealed that the atrial gland epithelium is composed of two major cell types: ‘goblet-like’ exocrine cells containing large electron-dense granules, and ciliated ‘capping cells’. A non-secretory, and possibly post-secretory, cell containing electron-lucent granules was noted. A region of the large hermaphroditic duct contiguous to the atrial gland, known as the red hemiduct, also displayed capping cells and secretory cells with large granules. The content of these granules is organized into crista-like condensations. The cell also contains iron-rich pigment inclusions. 相似文献

Plerocercoids of different sizes as well as adult worms of D. dendriticum, D. latum and D. ditremum were studied using scanning electron microscopy (S.E.M.). In the plerocercoids there were found distinct differences in appearance and length of microtriches between these three species, while the microtriches of adult worms were more similar. A regional difference in microtrix appearance was found in the larvae of D. ditremum and D. dendriticum. This was not apparent with S.E.M. in adult worms. The length of ‘body’ microtriches in D. dendriticum varied with the length of the larvae. The topography of the genital atrium of mature and gravid proglottids in adult worms of these three species is also described. 相似文献

The spermathecal complex of the bark beetle, Ips typographus, comprises the following elements: spermathecal duct, spermatheca and spermathecal gland. The spermathecal duct connects the vagina and the spermatheca and consists of a cuticular tube surrounded by an epithelial layer and circular muscles. The spermatheca is bottle-shaped and has a cuticle-lined lumen. Muscles are attached to both ends of the spermatheca. The spermathecal gland which is connected to the spermatheca possesses three cell types: glandular, hypodermal, and ductule. The glandular cells have different structural characteristics depending on the age and reproductive state of the females. After the emergence of the brood, two different kinds of secretory material are present in the glandular cells. There is evidence that one type of secretion is emitted during the first few days after brood emergence, while the other type accumulates to be secreted during later stages. 相似文献

The male genital tract and aedeagal components of the Diptera with a discussion of their phylogenetic significance 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The male genital tract of Diptera is surveyed, based on whole dissections, with emphasis on nematocerous infraorders and especially the Culicomorpha. The genital tracts of all available nematocerous families are described and illustrated, including, for the first time, those of the families Thaumaleidae, Dixidae, Hesperinidae, and Pachyneuridae, and, as an outgroup, the mecopteran family Nannochoristidae (Mecoptera). On the basis of outgroup comparison, the Diptera + Mecoptera + Siphonaptera share the synapomorphies of accessory gland continuous with the vas deferens and U-shaped vasa deferentia. Further synapomorphies of the male genital tract provide evidence of the monophyly of the Mecoptera + Siphonaptera, Boreidae + Siphonaptera, and the Blephariceridae + Psychodidae + Trichoceridae + Anisopodidae + Brachycera. The Bibionomorpha, Culicomorpha, and Ptychopteromorpha share the synapomorphy of paired, two- to three-chambered accessory gland complexes, with secondary losses in Corethrellidae + Culicidae. It is concluded that there is no convincing evidence for the monophyly of the Chironomoidea. A sperm pump with an ejaculatory apodeme and the absence of a spermatophore are considered to be part of the ground plan of Diptera, but, because of uncertainty as to the identity of the basal lineage within Diptera and the homology of the sperm pump outside of Diptera, the polarity of these features cannot be presently interpreted. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 150 , 711–742. 相似文献

This study aimed to morphologically characterize and compare the male reproductive accessory glands (RAGs) of bats belonging to the five Brazilian subfamilies of the family Phyllostomidae (Carollia perspicillata—Carollinae; Desmodus rotundus—Desmodontinae; Glossophaga soricina—Glossophaginae; Phyllostomus discolor—Phyllostominae and Platyrrhinus lineatus—Stenodermatinae). The study demonstrated that the RAGs of phyllostomid bats were comprised of a pair of extra‐abdominal bulbourethral glands and an intra‐abdominal complex, composed of paraurethral glands and a prostate with two (Desmodontinae and Stenodermatinae) or three (Carollinae, Glossophaginae and Phyllostominae) different regions, with the absence of the seminal vesicles; this pattern possibly evolved from a process of compaction of the prostatic regions from an ancestor with three regions. Fiorillo, B. S., Zama, U., Lino‐Neto, J. and Báo, S. N. 2010. Structural and ultrastructural studies of male reproductive tract and spermatozoa in Xylocopa frontalis (Hymenoptera, Apidae). —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 91 : 176–183. In Xylocopa frontalis the reproductive tract is composed of testes, deferent ducts, seminal vesicles, accessory glands and an ejaculatory duct. Each testis comprises four testicular tubules in which multiple cysts are present containing approximately 64 spermatozoa per cyst. The seminal vesicle consists of an epithelium, a thick basement lamina and a muscular external sheet. In the luminal region some vesicles can be observed; however, the epithelial cells of the seminal vesicle do not display morphological features associated with secretory functions. The spermatozoa, measuring approximately 260 µm long, are similar to the hymenopteran pattern. The head region consists of an acrosome with an inner perforatorium that penetrates an asymmetrical nuclear tip. The nucleus is linear, electron‐dense and its posterior tip projects into the beginning of the axoneme. The centriolar adjunct is asymmetric with many electron‐lucent lacunae interspersed throughout. The axoneme has the 9 + 9 + 2 pattern of microtubules and in the posterior region the central microtubules finish first, followed by the doublets and finally the accessory microtubules. The mitochondrial derivatives are asymmetric in both length and diameter with paracrystalline material present only in the larger one. These features may be useful characters for taxonomy and phylogenetic studies. 相似文献

Terminal portions of the male copulatory apparatus of Planorbis planorbis, Segmentina oelandica, and Anisus vortex were studied using whole-mount preparations, serial semi-thin sections, and transmission electron microscopy. In the latter species, stylet formation was investigated at several stages of postembryonic development. Organization of the penial distal portion in the species studied varies greatly. In P. planorbis, the distal end of the penis lacks developed papillae and is armed with a stylet built up of the covering epithelial cells of the penis proper. In A. vortex, the stylet is formed by the secretory activity of the middle cells of the distal portion of the penis. To the time of maturation, the cells encompassing the stylet are broken down exposing its solid chitinous structure and characteristic shape. In S. oelandica, the distal end of the penis bears the long probably flexible papilla with the characteristics of an internal ‘skeleton,’ organized as a line of connective tissue cells and a system of hydrocoelic cavities. 相似文献
